CELEBRATING A BENCHMARK YEAR

The East Stroudsburg University Foundation’s fiscal year 2022–2023 came to a triumphant close as alumni, family and friends showed their support for East Stroudsburg University and its students.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

A $4 million bequest received, the largest commitment in ESU’s history

734 scholarship awards totaling $1,109,525 to student recipients

Surpassed $1 million in scholarship support for the fourth consecutive year

$2,600,000 in grants and sponsorships received

Donor Advised Funds, IRA and stock gifts rose by 46 percent, a 313 percent increase since 2017

President’s Circle membership grew by 47 percent to 247 members

The 1893 Society increased by 11 members

Ribbon cuttings culminating two major fundraising campaigns in total gifts and pledges

In April 2023, the East Stroudsburg University Foundation held its annual scholarship dinner, a memorable celebration that brings together scholarship donors and their student recipients to meet and get to know one another. Always a packed room, the event, for me, reinforces a spirit of philanthropy within ourselves, reminding us the impact we can have on people’s lives.

Fast forward to June 30th, the end of fiscal year 2022-2023, and those individual personal stories we heard from donors and students that evening escalate in scale as the ESU Foundation shared it provided 734 scholarship awards to students that year, totaling more than $1.1 million. Even greater an accomplishment, it’s the fourth consecutive year that support to student scholarship surpassed the $1million mark.

The scholarship program is just a fraction of support the ESU Foundation has provided ESU and its students in fiscal year 2022-2023. I’m happy to say the Foundation secured $9,580,446 million in gifts and pledges from more than 3,200 donors, a record year in its 37-year history.

It’s times like these when your generosity comes shining through and we’re reminded how truly remarkable you are. Included in this record year is also the Foundation’s largest commitment ever, a $4 million bequest from alumna Harriet Hall ’56, whose story graces the pages of this magazine. In her and her late husband George’s ’58 name, their bequest will make a significant impact on ESU and its students. We could not be more grateful!

Also, within these pages, you’ll discover the result of your generosity in other ways. Our accomplishments in fiscal year 2022–2023 include: Fundraising events that raised money for scholarship and affinity programs, including the inaugural dinner celebration for ESU’s 14th President Kenneth Long and 10 golf tournaments for athletics and academic programs.

The formal opening of the Aquaculture Lab was held as well as the Dale and Frances Hughes Foundation Community Health Education and Simulation Center. Both of these facilities offer students the best of learning experiences and shine a spotlight on ESU’s academic strengths.

It’s always part of the ESU Foundation’s pledge to you to properly steward and recognize your gifts of support. This year, we’re proud to have a clean audit from our outside financial auditing team. Also, to recognize your continued support, the Foundation this fall announced the Lifetime Giving Society and the Loyalty Society, both of which you will find listed in this report. Our dedicated and loyal supporters deserve this esteemed recognition!

I’d like to thank the ESU Foundation board for their efforts this year as well as the staff who worked diligently to accomplish these achievements. When everyone works together, and ESU’s alumni and friends show they care, the outcome is significant.

Inside the 2022-2023 Annual Report and Honor Roll of Donors, you will meet Harriet Hall, a member of East Stroudsburg University’s Class of 1956. Harriet’s love and deep devotion to her alma mater resulted in a historic commitment to ESU this year – a $4 million bequest created to help ESU students become impactful teachers and active citizens. This generous legacy from Harriet and her late husband, George, inspired all of us at the Foundation and on campus. We hope her story and other notes from the year will also inspire and ignite your enthusiasm for ESU.

Also in this year’s report, you will discover how the combined generosity of so many others has played a significant role in our record-breaking year to support the university and its students.

We are grateful to all those who made these great achievements possible this year:

Awarded 734 scholarship awards totaling $1,109,525, ensuring that an ESU education remains affordable.

Culminated two capital campaigns for facility improvements with the dedication of two academic spaces: The Dale and Frances Hughes Community Health Education and Simulation Center for nursing and athletic training, and The Aquaculture Laboratory for marine science.

Celebrated the investiture of ESU’s 14th president, Ken Long, with a fundraising inauguration dinner that established the Creating Opportunities Scholarship Fund.

ETHICAL STANDARDS

Launched Warrior Women Who Give, a women’s giving circle that brings together like-minded ESU alumnae and friends who recognize that women as donors have the capability of making a tremendous impact.

Raised more than $9.5 million in new gifts and pledges for scholarships, facility improvements, athletics, and academic programs.

Moving into a new year, we will strive to ensure our alumni, friends, faculty, staff, parents, and community partners are clear that their impact is felt and seen at the University. All support transforms our students, fosters their intellectual and personal growth, and develops the skills to move successfully into careers, civic positions, and graduate education.

Like Harriet and George Hall, many alumni are devoted to the institution that shaped them. We are grateful for all; and work each day to secure the future for each new generation of students.

HIGHLIGHTS OF FISCAL YEAR 2022–2023

Grant enables ESU to upgrade planetarium projection system

East Stroudsburg University installed a new Digistar 7 Fulldome Planetarium System in McMunn Planetarium thanks to a $205,700 grant from the R. Dale and Frances M. Hughes Foundation, based in Stroudsburg, Pa. The Digistar 7 projection system improves performance in academic courses in addition to supporting K-12 group visits, community programming, and institutional recruitment.

The McMunn Planetarium, which is named in honor of ESU supporters Charles A. “Tony” ‘69 and Patricia Lythgoe ‘68 McMunn, is housed in ESU’s Warren E. ‘55 and Sandra Hoeffner Science and Technology Center.

The ESU Foundation launched the women’s philanthropy circle, Warrior Women Who Give, or WWWG, during fiscal year 2022–2023. Through WWWG, women of all ages come together, making professional and personal connections with other participants from a variety of industries and diverse backgrounds. Combining their philanthropic support, the group collaborates to make a significant contribution to ESU and its students.

The WWWG circle includes tiered participation levels with members enjoying participation in meetings, events, business networking, leadership development and community engagement opportunities. More information can be found at www.esufoundation.org/wwg

Inaugural Dinner raises funds for student scholarship

Campus and community festivities for the inauguration of ESU President Kenneth Long included a celebration dinner hosted by the ESU Foundation. Nearly 200 guests attended the dinner held on April 26, 2023, at the Ridgecrest Ballroom at Stroudsmoor Country Inn. Proceeds from the event formed the Creating Opportunities Scholarship Fund, which benefits ESU students.

Athletics, academic golf outings raise funds for programs

Many of ESU’s athletic and academic staff collaborated with the ESU Foundation in executing golf outings to fundraise for their respective programs during fiscal year 2022–2023. In total, 838 golfers participated in nine golf outings, resulting in $174,461 in proceeds to benefit the following:

ESU’s Speech and Hearing Clinic receives grant funding

Collaborating with the East Stroudsburg University Foundation, ESU’s Speech and Hearing Clinic received grants from four separate organizations to purchase equipment and fund the clinic for at-risk children. In total, $58,800 was secured for the clinic that for 15-years has been committed to improving the lives of at-risk children by screening hearing and speech delays as early as possible.

Ribbon cuttings hosted by the East Stroudsburg University Foundation in fiscal year 2022–2023 highlighted the end of two major fundraising campaigns held the previous year.

and Frances Hughes Foundation Community Health Education and Simulation Center

The Dale and Frances Hughes Foundation Community Health Education and Simulation Center was unveiled on April 18, 2023. The state-of-the-art center, located in the DeNike Center for Human Services, offers simulation and inter-professional practice opportunities for East Stroudsburg University students in the College of Health Sciences and local community healthcare organizations.

Aquaculture Laboratory

ESU’s newly renovated Aquaculture Lab opened thanks to collaborative fundraising with the ESU Foundation and a $100,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The laboratory gives students studying marine science the opportunity to develop, build, and maintain a variety of aquaculture systems, including: a Berlin reef system, a Jaubert (Monaco) system, marine ornamentals, freshwater aquatics, specialty tanks, and feeding and rearing systems. The ESU Foundation later funded signage and lettering for the entrance of the space.

Not only will this scholarship allow me to finish earning my degree, but it has granted me the opportunity to play my final year of the sport I love. Basketball has been a huge part of my life since I was in kindergarten, so I am extremely thankful that I was able to play this last year at ESU and finish my athletic career.

The scholarships I’ve been fortunate to receive have truly transformed my educational journey at ESU. First and foremost, they have provided a vital release from the financial pressures often accompanying higher education. This relief has allowed me to focus on my studies, excel in my athletics campaign, and engage actively in the vibrant ESU community. The scholarships’ financial support has been the cornerstone that enables me to pursue a well-rounded and immersive college experience.

These scholarships have opened a gateway to a realm of opportunities that I might not have otherwise accessed. Connecting with esteemed professors and accomplished peers within my field has been an eye-opening experience. These connections have expanded my horizons, enriched my understanding, and motivated me to push the boundaries of my academic pursuits. The exposure to diverse perspectives and insights has been invaluable in shaping my educational path.

Equally significant, the recognition accompanying these scholarships has ignited a relentless sense of pride and determination within me. Acknowledging my hard work and dedication is a constant reminder of the heights I can achieve.

The scholarship I received has had a great impact on my success at East Stroudsburg University. Not only does it help cover the cost of college, but it gives me the confidence to continue doing what I do here. Being selected for a scholarship shows me that I’m doing great things during my education and that I’m being recognized for it. I was happy to receive the Charles T. ‘84 M’86 and Teresa M. Taylor Endowed Scholarship in 2021 and 2022, and I have pushed myself to do as well as I can to not let the scholarship donors down.

I have maintained Dean’s List for all my semesters here, I ran for president of the Computer Science Organization in 2022 and won, and I continue to learn as much as I can from my classes to ensure I succeed in the world beyond ESU.

Leading my club gave me a chance to help students in my major and make connections that will last after we all graduate. If I didn’t have the confidence or motivation, I would have never pushed myself to run for president.
