IV. NEW SCIENTIFIC INFRASTRUCTURE The local importance of the marine resources and the need for scientific capacity building at regional and national level, IPL and GIRM submitted an application for building an infrastructure to support research activities and the development of marine resources sustainable use. This application to the construction of the new building called CETE MARES, has been submitted to QREN financing program (Sistema de Infraestruturas Científicas e Tecnológicas - SAICT, Mais Centro program) by the president of the IPL, on December 3, 2010. The CETE MARES infrastructure aims to support scientific activities related to marine resources, therefore it is being built on the harbour, close to the sea and to the fishing men community of Peniche. This new scientific infrastructure, with a budget of 2,985,672.27 euros and around 2000 square meters, will

IX.ORGANIZATION OF INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS GIRM is organizing an international congress in the area of marine resources, the International Meeting on Marine Resources (IMMR). The IMMR had three editions – 2009, 2010 and 2012. The fourth edition will be held in June 2014. The IMMR is planned to communicate the new scientific knowledge on marine resources for the understanding and sustainability of our planet. The scientific program has all the focus on innovative research in the fisheries and management, aquaculture, conservation and biodiversity, marine biotechnology and also seafood technology. The regular program is sustained by several international experts that will share scientific knowledge through state-of-the-art lectures as well as by young researchers with the latest scientific innovations, discoveries and practices on important subjects in the multidisciplinary field of marine resources. The IMMR’09, IMMR’10 and IMMR’12 had more than 100 hundred delegates each from several countries.

X. MAIN DISSEMINATION ACTIVITY • IPL-ESTM through GIRM, Forum Estudante and the Municipality of Peniche organize the "Semana Tanto Mar". With students of secondary school as the target, "Semana Tanto Mar" aims to raise awareness among Portuguese students about the importance of the Sea to Portugal, to awake vocations for maritime jobs and to increase skilled human capital able to take advantage of portuguese marine resources. During 1 week, the students are invited to participate on a large number of activities related with marine science, marine technology, maritime culture and history, as well as surf or diving experiences. • GIRM is also responsible for the project "O Mar aqui tão perto", funded by “Ciência Viva” through the program “Escolher Ciência: da Escola à Universidade”. This project is partnership with Secondary School of Peniche and Municipality of Peniche and aims to promote closer ties between secondary and higher education, with a view to sharing resources and encouragement to pursue studies in science and technology. For such, are conducted a set of sea environmental education actions like laboratory activities, lectures and marine field trips.
