Looking back at the previous editions the Magazine has not left its roots and is still providing students all over Europe insights in both happenings within ESTIEM, insights from IEM professionals of the industry and academia on trending topics in the field of IEM. Upon reaching a milestone we always look back, but we also take a look into what the future will bring us. The focus topic of this Magazine, not coincidentally the same as the topic of our Vision seminar series, is also very much looking into the future. Can materials help to overcome problems, create new possibilities and, in general, improve our standards of life? You will get an insight into the future of this topic in this 50th issue. Industrial debating - the magic sword for every IEM professional This scenario is seen too often: a student goes to university and graduates in IEM. He or she starts working. And then the monster comes. Their ambitious project needs to be saved from the monster’s claws, but they are ill-equipped. They need a magic sword to slay it but, like in a videogame level, they forgot to pick it up along the way; the hero comes to an inglorious end. The magic sword they needed? The power of debate. But not all debating skills are applicable in a business environment. Nobody stands up to make a point in a business meeting. So instead, I began teaching something I call “Industrial Debating” – debating to be used in commercial environments. The first rule of Industrial Debating is that you do not talk about Industrial Debating. After all, you can’t openly bring a magic sword to a fist fight. Towards quantitative decision making in ESTIEM! About one year ago, the idea of forming a task group which conducts quantitative analysis on issues about ESTIEM was launched by three ESTIEMers. Strategic decisions were merely made on perceptions instead of on facts. Therefore, we believe that ESTIEM’s strategy could be improved if quantitative data are taken into account. As it requires too much effort for the ESTIEM board, a task group was initiatited. The goal was: quantitatively supporting the ESTIEM Board in strategic decision making. In this article, we explain: what has been done so far, what the current situation is, and what can be done in the future.

Students argue in favor or against the possible amount of non-IEM students in ESTIEM. However, nobody knows the real percentage of non-IEM students in ESTIEM. With this analysis, we showed an approximation of the percentage of IEM students per Local Group. The IEM percentage was tested using three different policies and we found out that the percentage of IEM in look at the Local Groups that have a low percentage of IEM. So, after this long trip I ask myself, what can my advice be to you? To begin, I can surely say that you should not be afraid to travel alone. In my last month I travelled along the Uruguayan coast. Uruguay is very progressive, safe and ‘tranquilo’ calm. It is a perfect place to chill out and enjoy life. I returned to Porto Alegre for another week with the family I stayed with earlier. After spending my last days in Montevideo, it was time to return home. And after the amazing but long 4 months, I did not mind to go back home at all.
