Dear Reader,
01 PROJECT LEADER'S SPEECH
I am thrilled to welcome you to this special issue of ESTIEM Magazine, titled “35 Years & Countless Memories”
We chose this title because while “35 years” may seem simple, within those years lie countless stories, each one meaningful and impactful.
ESTIEM has been more than just an organization; it has been a place where people have found themselves, discovered their future paths, and built lifelong friendships that have shaped their journeys. Many joined as students and, even after years, remain deeply connected as alumni, still carrying the ESTIEM spirit with them.
What kind of environment can create such a lasting impact? It’s an environment where attending your first event feels like the start of an unforgettable adventure. Where checking the portal for upcoming events becomes a habit, and not having one lined up leaves you eager for more.
This issue celebrates exactly that—the emotions we’ve shared, the amazing people we’ve met, and the achievements we’ve made together.
As you turn these pages, we invite you to relive the journey, honor our history, and look forward to the bright future of ESTIEM.
Enjoy reading, and happy 35th anniversary to ESTIEM!
In High ESTIEM,
Sılanaz Altay ESTIEM Magazine Leader
UCTION PRESIDENT'S SPEECH
Dear reader,
For millennia, the River Nile has been a source of life for North-East Africa. For many generations, humans have been in search of the one true source of the Nile. And much like them, today we know that ESTIEM had multiple beginnings, that happened at the same time and, with good fortune, birthed such an organisation that this year celebrates its 35th Birthday.
Have you ever heard or read the stories of ESTIEM’s early years? Taking such a look back makes you realise wonderful things. Open up the ESTIEM Book that was made for the 25th anniversary, read old ESTIEM Magazines on Issuu, approach some alumni to share anecdotes... You will hear adventures of hitchhiking throughout Europe to go to a Council Meeting, faxing letters, promoting events in the Magazine, free events and many more.
When I look back at those 35 years, I see something magical that can be summed up in 3 words: ambition, creativity, perseverance.
Since its foundation, ESTIEM has had Local Groups at over 100 universities and that number keeps growing. Many of them were student organisations founded specifically to become Local Groups of ESTIEM. Ambition of students to work hard to create something for the long-term benefit of many is a brave and noble endeavour that still shapes the future of many.
One can hardly even count how many Initiatives, Projects and Services were started thanks to the creativity of ESTIEMers. Got an idea for a new event or project? You can do it!
ESTIEM has faced many adversities. I keep getting amazed by the continuous perseverance of ESTIEMers to push through it and survive, to stay innovative and push through the troubles with compassion and full of life, true to their common Mission and Vision, inspired by the possibilities.
But, what is ESTIEM today? That’s a question for you. Your personal mission. To find your spot, the community, entity or event that is a spark for the life you never expected. To bring your spark to the world. There’s a saying in Serbia –crumbs maketh bread, rocks maketh fortress. Your idea, no matter its apparent impact, can become an important part of this network, but more importantly your or someone else’s life. Use this opportunity to write the future you want to see.
We’re all stories in the end. So let’s make it a good one.
In High ESTIEM, Milutin Miljanić President of the 35th Board of ESTIEM

ESTIEM’S TREASURE:
SUMMER ACADEMY
My name is Vlad, LG Aveiro. I was leading Summer Academy in 20182019, between CM Warsaw and Tampere. I applied for leadership on my very first CM straight after attending the Summer Academy event in Zagreb in 2018. That event was quite impactful for all the participants. For 7 years already I am carrying very strong bonds with people who I met there, but if we are talking about measuring the impact for the
network - I would not make a huge mistake if I will say that half of participants applied for their local boards after it, and few more people ended up in central board of ESTIEM some time later. As for me, mostly due to the impact of the event, I shortly became a president of a local group, and when an upcoming CM appeared an opportunity to apply for leadership of SAC service - I did not hesitate to do it.
At that moment Summer Academy service was going through some pivotal moments. It was a few years already since Jim Platts* was not delivering the event, so ESTIEM had to not only keep the concept the same, but also shape it to make it possible to be delivered by other academic leaders.
So 2018 was one of the first moments when the generation of Academic leaders, who were delivering events after Jim was no longer able to, and leaders of the service were putting a lot of efforts in enriching pool of potential academic leaders, motivating them to participate in the organisation of the event and later keep them inside the network. One of the milestones of my mandate was organising Winter Academy Lappeenranta. It was the third ever Winter Academy (we started to organise Winter Academies only after Jim), and it was also the first event delivered by Paulo Xavier, Academic leader from Portugal, who was acquired by a leader before me - Sonia Araujo. That event was a big success for everyone. Feedback from participants was great, the event got a reward as event of the year, and Paulo liked it a lot - even now we can see him and/or his wife organising Summer/Winter/Autumn academies for the network.
* Jim Platts was a professor from Cambridge, an honorary member of ESTIEM, who had
from 2001 till 2013. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2022.

organised first Summer Academies
With such an input from academic leaders, we, as a central team only had to support spreading of the testimonials from participants within the network and there were always enough applicants for future events. Rather than that, there were some challenges that are still similar to todays - finding a local group who has access to proper location and a desire to organise an event during summer, ensuring that the budget is as optimised as possible, so participation fee is affordable, etc.
You are carrying in your hands something very different from everything else that we have in ESTIEM, something impactful and at the same moment intimate. Don’t lose it and use it properly!
Another challenge that I tried to tackle was changing the name of the service. After we started to organise Winter Academies, the name of the entity became confusing. I didn’t succeed with finding an option network that would satisfy me, and as I see, 7 years later, this challenge is still there.
Looking at the Summer Academies today, I think what changed is that current academic leaders are shaping the perception of the event according to what they can bring to the network. Still, the core value of Summer Academy, as an event that can change your life, is still there, just as it was there 7 years ago. That would be my advice or hope for future generations of ESTIEMers somehow involved with summer academy service - don’t forget that you are carrying in your hands something very different from everything else that we have in ESTIEM, something impactful and at the same moment intimate. Don’t lose it and use it properly!

Summer Academy has always been a unique event in ESTIEM, the service is known for being “life-changing”. It stands out with the opportunity it presents to create genuine bonds with other participants, as you practically live together, cook together, and grow together in the same house for a week.
Iam Ceren from LG Ankara-METU. I am the leader of the Summer Academy Service for 24/25 mandate. Winter Academy Novi Sad 2023 was my first international event. This event is a milestone in my life for several reasons; it was the first time I ever went abroad, and I was by myself. I can safely say I doubted attending this event a lot, but the concept was too intriguing to turn away. Looking back now I’m sure it was one of the best decisions I have made so far. Not only did I form incredible friendships with other participants, but with the things I learned from George Begemann (the Academic Leader of the event) I started looking at my future as something I can shape as I want it to be, and I’m the one who controls it. After this event, I knew I wanted to be a part of this organization and give as many people as possible the opportunity to experience a Summer Academy event. So, after I gained some Central ESTIEM experience, in CM Aveiro I applied for the leadership position to achieve my goal.
Every Summer Academy event has had a unique concept, which makes every experience different from the other. These concepts all have personal development and self-improvement at their core, but they tackle these from different perspectives.
In recent years, every Summer Academy event has had a unique concept, which makes every experience different from the other. These concepts all have personal development and self-improvement at their core, but they tackle these from different perspectives. During my mandate (so far), we have had one Summer Academy (Madrid), with Paulo Xavier and Virginia Santos as the Academic Leaders, that took inspiration from The Star Wars Saga and intertwined it with self-development; and one Winter Academy (Liege) with Virginia Santos that based selfdevelopment on the nature’s elements. Both of these were received incredibly well, Summer Academy Madrid participants created such strong bonds with each other, they are still having monthly chats (as much as everyone is available)!
The biggest issue that I think Summer Academy currently has is the limited number of Academic Leaders. As the transportation of the Academic Leaders is covered by the organizing Local Groups and with Summer Academy events, accommodation and food expenses are also huge parts of the budget, it is important to match Local Groups and Academic Leaders that are relatively close to each other.
When a Local Group that is distant from the active Academic Leaders wants to organize a Summer Academy event, it becomes very difficult to arrange the budget accordingly. The solution to this problem is to find new Academic Leaders for the network or try to engage the people who are already in the Academic Leaders pool but don’t give Academies. I have contacted several people from both the existing potential Academic
Leaders and outside who are willing to take part, or at least enthusiastic to learn more. Alas, this search has been an ongoing endeavor for generations of Summer Academy Leaders.
Let’s be honest, Summer Academy is never the most popular event on the portal, so PR is incredibly important. In recent years, we have started doing testimonials from previous participants of Summer Academy, also from the Academic Leaders, which proved useful to increase the popularity of the events. Also, recent events have been very successful, and ESTIEMers who attend them encourage others for the experience as well.
I am a firm believer that Summer Academy is truly the treasure of ESTIEM, and that’s not just a saying. It is a very unique opportunity for ESTIEMers and truly changes your life for the better. My hope for future generations is for the current hype for the Service to continue, and my advice for the future leaders would be to always appreciate it, both helping the organization and being a part of this service adds a lot to you. It gets tough sometimes, as most things do, but I think it is a priceless opportunity to be a part of this service, so cherish your time!

Iwasn’t sure where to start, but when a dear friend invited me to write about “Friendship in ESTIEM,” I couldn’t possibly pass up the opportunity.
For the past 2.5 years, I’ve been lucky to travel with ESTIEM, participating in events all over Europe. Naturally, it happens that people ask me why I dedicate so much time to this network, especially when it means juggling other responsibilities in life. Of course, the cheap travel opportunities, unique development experiences, and the chance to authentically explore new places through the eyes of local students are all incredible. But the real reason I keep coming back?
The people.
FRIENDSHIPS IN ESTIEM
And truly, an event is the perfect place to bond quickly: In just five days, you share countless experiences, create silly inside jokes, and embark on random side quests, all of which make it feel like you know each other. These intense, shared moments are what truly bond you together while also making for some legendary anecdotes (aka ‘dad lore’).
And these connections might be short-lived, but they’re not superficial: For that fleeting moment, you get to laugh, inspire, support, and truly listen to one another —even if it’s just to share the stupidest thoughts running through your head.
ESTIEM friendships seem similar: you only get a glimpse into someone’s character and life, yet the connection is real. What makes these friendships even more special is that you’re likely to cross paths again—sometime, somewhere, in Europe—where you’ll simply pick up right where you left off.
When describing ESTIEM events to newcomers, I often call them “summer camp for people our age”—because everyone is also there looking to connect, eager to meet new people, and ready to embark on an adventure together.
A lovely person once introduced me to what he called “friendship hookups” these random people you meet one evening at a party, who through deeptalks build a profound connection and understanding , only to disappear from your life the next day.
So this bond turns into what you could call a “low-maintenance friendships”: You may not see each other for months, but the moment you do, it’s as if no time has passed. The deep talks, the inside jokes, the energy to experience something crazy together — everything is coming back, as if no time has passed. And the craziness of an ESTIEM event is the best environment to spark that intensity again.
And if you happen to visit an ESTIEM friend’s city, what better proof of friendship is there than being welcomed and hosted? My (platonic) love language is offering you dinner, a city tour, and a place to sleep. And I’m incredibly grateful every t ime someone does the same for me.
Still, these friendships are not only about fun and adventure. If you ever need support, you can count on an ESTIEM friend to be there for you—no matter the distance or how much time has passed since you last spoke. That’s what makes these connections so authentic and genuine.
A fair question might be: Will these friendships last? What hap pens when our active ESTIEM years come to an end?
French poet Jean d’Ormesson once described life as a train ride: We board at birth, meeting fellow passengers along the way—starting with our parents, later joined by our friends and all other acquaintances—who travel alongside us. Throughout the ride, many people come to share a part of our journey, but they will ultimately have to disembark somewhere along the way. Some leave so quietly we barely notice, while others leave an emptiness behind. What matters isn’t how long they stay, but the quality of the time spent together—the moments we shared, the impact we had on each other’s lives, and the ability to smile when looking back on those experiences.
Or, to instead quote Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother: “You will be shocked, kids, when you discover how easy it is in life to part ways with people forever.” Yet, he still had nine seasons’ worth of stories about the friendships that shaped him, that he wholeheartedly wanted to tell his children.
So, who knows what happens after ESTIEM? Seeing alumni remain close long after their active years gives me hope that the friendships I cherish now will continue. But for now, I am very much enjoying the train ride with you. A nd just know that if you ever find yourself in my city, you will always have a place to sleep.
Recognizing its significance, the ESTIEM Magazine was declared a “unique project” during ESTIEM College 2014. Unlike most student NGOs in Europe, ESTIEM has maintained a professional magazine accessible to both ESTIEMers and nonESTIEMers, including students, professors, and professionals in the field of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM).
In autumn 2008, during its 35th issue, a very notable structural change was made. To structure the magazine’s content more effectively, a threepillar strategy was introduced, dividing articles into:
ESTIEM Section – Featuring event reports, updates on committees and initiatives, and interviews with former ESTIEMers.
Career & Professional Section – Including company presentations, internship experiences, and professional interviews.
Focus Topic Section – Providing in-depth analyses of specific IEM trends.
Throughout the years, several other sections were introduced and later on kept, changed or removed.
Advancements in Design and Content
For its first 44 issues, the ESTIEM Magazine was printed in black and white, with a circulation of 5,000 copies. However, with the rise of online printing services, costs decreased significantly, allowing ESTIEM to transition to full-color printing. This shift enabled greater design improvements and a more professional image.
The content also evolved, incorporating articles from esteemed professionals and organizations beyond Europe. Collaborations with institutions like the Institute of Industrial Engineers in America and Ireland allowed for the inclusion of expert insights from key global companies and research institutes.
ESTIEM MAGAZINE TODAY
In recent years, the ESTIEM Magazine faced a decline in interest. To address this, the team took a new approach, balancing professional content with engaging, entertaining pieces that resonate with ESTIEMers. Instead of maintaining rigid subsections, they now adapt the structure based on the articles available, while still maintaining a dedicated Focus Topic for each issue.
Today, the ESTIEM Magazine thrives with a dedicated team of contributors, including two article acquisition members, three graphic designers, and one promotion responsible. Their passion and commitment continue to drive the magazine forward, ensuring that it remains a valuable resource for both the ESTIEM network and the broader IEM community.
With its rich history and continuous evolution, the ESTIEM Magazine stands as a testament to the organization’s dedication to knowledge-sharing, professional development, and community spirit.

“United, we can conquer all of people hearts”
Europe has always been a continent of diversity. The richness of Europe lies in it’s people uniting regardless of their backgrounds and cultures, united by common values. Throughout history, young people have come together as the future and present of society as they feel responsible for contributing towards constructing the Europe of their dreams. Whether it is advocating for social change to fostering cross-cultural connections or providing diverse learning opportunities, we as young people and youth organisations are at the forefront of change. That is why, today, I want to highlight two organisations that have shown how important youth-led work is.
Since its founding in 1985, AEGEE has grown from a small student initiative in Paris to one of Europe’s largest student-run networks. Since its founding, AEGEE has continuously brought together students from across Europe, working on celebrating diversity whilst fostering mutual respect through conservation and breaking stereotypes.
AEGEE has been at the forefront of significant youth initiatives, including advocating for European integration, addressing sexual harassment in youth organisations, and promoting cultural exchange and cross-border collaboration. Through local events, international conferences, and large-scale campaigns, AEGEE has empowered thousands of students to make a difference in their communities, shaping the future of a diverse, borderless Europethat is socially, economically, and politically integrated.
ESTIEM BIRTHDAY
AEGEE has also played a role in inspiring and unlocking the Erasmus programme we have come to know and love and influenced European policies through participating in among others EU Youth Dialogues. To this day, AEGEE continues to promote values like social inclusion, equity, and sustainability through its projects and activities. Though, its ability to unite young people from diverse backgrounds to work towards a shared vision of a united Europe is perhaps AEGEE greatest strength.
But all this work is not possible without partners who bring out the best in us. One such important partnership is that of ESTIEM. While different in their focus, both ESTIEM and AEGEE share a commitment to youth development and the empowerment of young people. Because of these shared values, a more systematic collaboration between these organisations was formalised in Spring 2024.
As ESTIEM celebrates its 35th anniversary and AEGEE its 40th, we should take a moment to reflect on the journey they had to foster unity, collaboration, and personal development.
While the partnership is still in its infancy, there have been beautiful collaborations taking place. Through joint events, like a collaborative business hackathon, training new trainers and attending each other’s events, we have brought together students from different disciplines together to exchange ideas, share knowledge and hopefully form lasting friendships. But we are just beginning, the future is uncertain, but I am certain that we will find ways to learn from each other and bring initiatives to young people that combine the strengths of both organisations.
Looking forward, my hope is that both AEGEE and ESTIEM will view their anniversaries as opportunities to look to the future with optimism. In a world that increasingly requires people to unite and stand together, youth-led initiatives promoting collaboration and conservation are becoming more important than ever. And that is where our role as organisations becomes crucial.
Together, let’s aim to continue inspiring and empowering the next generation of European leaders!
What did you experience and learn in the network, and how has it impacted your future life?
ESTIEM has shaped me in ways I never imagined. I started out as a typical German engineer—efficiency above all. But over time, my biggest priority shifted: now, it’s about appreciating humanity. Learning to truly listen— to not just hear words, but to understand the meaning and motivation behind them—has been an absolute game-changer. The international ex perience has been invaluable as well, both perso nally and professionally. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be in my current job if some of my best friends hadn’t gone and founded a company called Stu dyportals. Now, whenever I attend an internatio nal conference, I feel at home—even if it’s my first time in that setting mto an extent that I can meet
new people so comfortably that you end up wandering a city together until breakfast (with Mimosas :). That’s not just the foundation of countless unforgettable memories—it’s also a pretty amazing way to find the kind of people you want to work with (and who want to work with you).
If you could give one piece of advice to the current generation, what would it be?
Make this organization your own—bring in new ideas, new projects, new events! And please, please—cut down on the rules, especially for the people you’ve already entrusted through elections. Rules and creativity don’t mix. Just because one VP of Finance once left a bit of chaos behind doesn’t mean you need to create a rule that ties everyone’s hands forever. Rules should exist to solve structural issues, not one-off situations. Trust your people, and let innovation thrive!
Tomash Groen Local Group Tampere&Budapest Alumni
When and how did you start being active in ESTIEM?
In 2018, just after a Dutch guy started his Master’s degree in IEM in Tampere, Finland, the Local Group’s mother organization convinced him to attend ESTIEM 360 in Budapest. From that moment, he went to an event every month of the semester. Fast-forward to 2025, and we have 44 official events, of which 10 online, 8 physical Council Meetings, and a range of positions. Why? Because of the people, friends, atmosphere, experiences, and a whole lot of FOMO. No regrets <3.
If you could give one piece of advice to the current generation, what would it be?
D on’t hide, Express yourself. The world is full of people willing to share their experiences, insights, skills, knowledge, and kindness. Leverage them. There’s only 1 of you. Whoever is willing and most of all you, deserve this unbound version with all your ambitions, quirks, and interactions.
What did you experience and learn in the network, and how has it impacted your future life?
My emotional intelligence! My communication skills, empathy, self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, and social skills benefited so much, from the intercultural and rich journey within ESTIEM. Both in my personal life and professional life, I’ve become a completely different person, and I am very happy about it. Note that ESTIEM was not only a place where I learned & developed, but also a place where I could make mistakes, reflected, be forgiven and grow into the person I am today, and still continue to do! I discover my purest and best self, thanks to this network.
