Dear Reader, ESTIEM has been there for almost 30 years, which is a good moment to celebrate, but also to reflect upon what happened in those last 30 years. Thinking back on the time ESTIEM was just created and thinking on how the founders of ESTIEM had to work back then to make ESTIEM run, makes you realize how fast things have been developing. Back then, it was impossible to write some a WhatsApp text or to have a Skype call, it was even impossible to send someone an email. The best communication channel you had, was a written letter. For instance, at the first Council Meeting, they wrote a letter to a lot of students without having any clue who would show up. Luckily, ESTIEM was not very big back then, so it was all manageable. EXPLORE Famous for its castle, Heidelberg is one of the most visited places by tourist in Germany. The center of the city is one long street full of shops, restaurants, and bars, which are full of students every weekend. It is very common to see people of different nationalities everywhere, speaking in English. This city is very international. My German skills were completely neglected because I spoke in English for almost all the time. 5 months of the exchange program felt like I have traveled around the whole world, although I have just visited one part of Europe. This is due to International students that came from many different countries worldwide and gathered in one school, in one city. We had full time and Erasmus students from every continent. I made very good friends from South Korea, Mexico, Poland, the USA, Greece, Germany and other countries of Latin America. Getting to know other cultures and new ways of thinking is a priceless experience. Not to mention different food, customs, beliefs, religions. We created one great, open and friendly international community. It is almost impossible not to meet someone who would eventually become your friend. All of the students that came from abroad have the intention to meet new people, travel, explore, just like yourself. I met one of my best friends in a queue as we were waiting for some paperwork to get done at the faculty. It all starts with a very simple conversation like „Hey where are you from? “and ends with a longtime friendship. Also, students organize a lot of parties where it is easy to meet new friends. It is very nice to spend time together, where all of the students can gather. We had a ’party basement’, free space in the student dormitory where we could organize meetings and make parties. Besides the basement, the main meeting point was the kitchen where we prepared various meals together, sharing traditional recipes and having fun. I probably haven’t eaten that much Mexican food in my whole life.
Kitchen Gathering Traveling together was not the missing part, as I already mentioned. But we were studying and traveling at the same time. Sometimes we planned our months ahead so we could manage to travel and not miss any classes. The University in Heidelberg that we were studying at has a special way of organizing their classes. Teaching took place in small groups encouraging interaction between professors and students and between students themselves. We were free to express our opinion, worked on many projects in teams and held presentations. This was a chance for me to experience studying in a system that was the complete opposite of what I had before. Before coming to Germany, I didn’t know in what way this exchange is going to take place and how it is going to change me. It was a different adventure than I imagined. It is impossible to plan everything and sometimes you just have to wait to see how things turn out. Though, one is for sure, going on an exchange is a very valuable experience. It pushes you out of the comfortable everyday routine and brings you memories and friendships for life. Lastly, not everything is perfect. When entering a new, unknown space some things also have to go wrong. For example, some suitcases get stolen, friendships get broken or you get lost in a foreign city. But most importantly, it is all part of one great experience that makes you grow as a person and is all absolutely worth it.
