antwerp’s once dingy railway district of Dampoort is undergoing a revival spurred by the 2009 creation of Spoor Noord, a city park that has helped entice young professionals back to the area. Skating rinks on boats, quirky cafes, cool cocktail bars and a restored art deco swimming pool are just some of the rewards for visitors.

A cheerful welcome awaits those with sore heads.

The chef prepares a handful of no-frills French dishes in his open kitchen and changes the menu daily, depending on what’s on offer at the morning market. The house speciality, steak tartare, is highly recommended, washed down with a glass of red from the 200-bottle wine list. Cassez la croûte avec les habitués dans cette ex-boucherie style Art-déco de 1923. Dans la cuisine ouverte, le chef propose des plats français sans chichis. La carte varie en fonction du marché. La spécialité de la maison est le steak tartare, que l’on déguste accompagné d’un bon verre de rouge choisi dans une carte de 200 crus.

Summer is never far away thanks to outdoor barbecues, sports galore and cocktails from Cargo, a laid-back bar housed in the old railway repair shed.
