In a remarkable book of Divrei Torah by Rav Yehuda Amital, the founding Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion, who passed away in July of 2010, there are gems of thoughts, attitudes and advice for all of us. One of them struck me as most helpful in setting our spiritual and ethical priorities for the coming year. ➤
The Torah commands us (Deuteronomy, Chapter 23, verses 4 and 5) as follows: “No AmmoniteorMoabiteshallenterthecommunityofIsrael(i.e.marryaJewishwoman)because they did not offer you bread and water on your way out of Egypt” . The question about Moshe is really a general question about bakashot—petitionary prayer. Rabbi YosefAlboinhisSeferHaIkkarimrecordedthequestioninstarkterms:“EitherGodhasdetermined that a person will receive a certain benefit, or He has not so determined. If He has determined it, thereisnoneedofprayer;andifHehasnotdetermined, howcanprayeravailtochangeGod’swill…? ForGoddoesnotchangefromastateofwillingtoastateofnotwilling, orviceversa.”Thatis, the perfect God surely knows what He, in his infinite wisdom, wants for us. So why pray for anything? Moshe,morethananyone,understoodthisproblem.Andstill,heprayed—againandagain.Sowhydid Moshepray, andwhydowe?
RavJosephB.Soloveitchik,inWorshipoftheHeart, offeredaprofoundexplanationofwhatprayeris really about. He began by describing the loneliness of the human condition and our difficulties in trying to connect with God: a person “is a tiny speck floating in a vast sea of brute thinghood and mechanical existence. The other intelligent Being in Whom he may find sympathy and concern is distantandinvisible, hidingbehindthecloudofmysteryandtranscendence.”How,then, canweever bringGodintoourlives?HowcanHebringusstrengthduringourdifficulttime?
Prayer, theRavexplained, istheactbywhichahumanbeingattemptstopiercethathiddennessand draw close to God:“In prayer man tries to break through the unknown to the kerygmatic” , or the proclaimed, the revealed aspects of the divine, “and to attain contact with the Creator; to convert tenseness into intimacy, strangeness into acquaintance…When this takes place, man finds the unknowntobeanoldfriend…radiatingwarmthandlove”Inotherwords, wedonotprayinorderto “getthings”fromGod.WepraybecauseweneedGodinourlivesforthestrength, thehope, andthe couragetocontinue.PrayerishowwecanhaveHiminourlives.
Itislikeahomesickchildatsleepawaycamp.Sicktothestomachfrommissinghome, thechildfinally reaches a parent by phone (we discovered this summer that sleepaway camp these days means no communication; in my day, there was a pay phone!). The request—“Please take me home”—is denied.Butthevoiceontheotherendofferscomfort:weloveyou, wearethinkingofyou, youcan get through this. The child is invariably comforted. The circumstances have not changed, but the child’ s spirit has. Allan Sherman’ s “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” captured this perfectly. The comedicsong, asaletter, begins“Takemehome…don’tleaveme,”listingalloftheawfulthingsthe childhasexperiencedatcamp.Bytheendoftheverysameletter, however, thechildiscomfortedand askshisparentsto“kindlydisregardthisletter.”Theveryactofwritingtheletter, ofexpressinghis connectiontohisparents, allowedhimtogoonatcamp.
So it was for Moshe. Each of his five hundred and fifteen prayers was not only a request; it was a reaffirmation that God was with him. Even when God replied, “Do not speak to Me of this matter again,” Moshe knew that he had been heard, and that was enough to give him the strength to continueleadinguntiltheendofhislife.

You can ’t truly ask for forgiveness unless you believe that forgiveness is something worthy, something transformative.
I share this story because it is not only about forgiveness in general It is about forgiving our family The people closest to us are often the ones we find it most difficult to forgive—and yet, they’ re the ones we needtoforgivethemost.

May this be a year in which bitterness is removed from our lives and sweetness endures.
As you eat the date, reflect on what negativity you hope to leave behind in the year ahead.
May we live lives filled with mitzvot, kindness, and purpose as abundant as the seeds in this fruit.
Think of one new mitzvah, or act of goodness, you hope to add to your life this year.
May the harshness of judgment be sweetened, and may our path be filled with compassion and clarity
Focus on what you hope to grow in yourself this year; imagine cutting away whatever stands in the way.
May sweetness overflow in our
May we have the courage to cut ties with what no longer serves our growth, to stand firm in our values
May we remove from our lives all that ances us from our higher
t internal “enemies” — ts — you wish to let go of
May this be a year when our true worth is revealed, and we are judged with grace and favor.
Think of one hidden quality or strength within yourself you hope will be recognized or nurtured.
Identify one toxic influence — external or internal — that you wish to distance yourself from this year
May we lead with vision, integrity, and purpose — in all areas of our lives
Envision where you hope to lead in your family, community, or work and what kind of leader you strive to be
Second Night Only
May we welcome this year with new beginnings, fresh blessings, and open hearts
As you bite into this fruit, invite in one new experience or hope you wish to manifest this year

in memoriam
MiriamBreslauer
The mother of our very devoted, long-distance member Keith Breslauer, of London, was an extraordinary woman, an incredible mother, a devoted wife and a true friend to so many. She lived a life of meaning and encouraged those around her to believe in the impossible, to see problems as solvable and to meet everychallengewithcourage.
She was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who have been so committed to the JewishpeopleinEngland,inIsraelandaroundtheworld.
Reba Etra was the widow of the late Max J. Etra and a distinguished member of a family that has a long and stellar history in our community. Her three sons, Lionel, Richard and the late William Etra are all distinguished alumni of Ramaz. Lionel, besides being a stalwart supporterofKJandallofitsinvolvements, hasavirtually unbrokenrecordofservingasaBa’alTefillahonShabbat morning for the past forty years He is a fixture on the familybenchintheMainSynagogue.
RebawasamodelofwhataJewishmotherandbalabusta should be. She was meticulously observant and very active intellectually and personally. The achievements and contributions of her family are very much a result of the standards and principles of this exceptional Jewish woman.
She passed away at a very advanced age, probably the most advanced of any member of our congregation. She lovedKJandRamazasKJandRamazlovedher.
Learn to read Hebrew for free with Eyal. Whether you have no reading experience or can read the basics and are searching for fluency, Eyal is the app for you. Eyal was created by KJ Hebrew teacher Sara Rosen and is available on iPad and Mac. All work can be self-checked so no teacher is required. Suitable for all ages. Search for Eyal in the iPad or Mac App Store to get started.
She was a favorite in KJ. We loved having her for so many years at all of our activities, especially on Shabbat and Yom Tov mornings and at the various classes in which she was a regular. Occasionally, we had the privilege of hearing her play the piano at which she was a virtuoso. Mostly, we just enjoyed her delightful company, her eversmiling face and her genuine love for all of us at KJ, a love which was happily reciprocated.
She was a memorable member of the Jewish people and we were proud that she chose KJ in which to grow Jewishly and express her love and commitment to our people and to allhumanity.
For many years he was an active member of our congregation and contributed generously to every phase of KJ and the well-being of Ramaz of which his four daughtersarealldistinguishedalumnae
He was one of the first contributors to the Ramaz Endowment Fund when it was originally established He participated generously in every building program in whichRamazandKJwereinvolved
He had a very long and celebrated life of service to the Jewish people, the State of Israel, andallhumanity.
