EquiJUSTICE is a centre for the advocacy of political justice. In October 2020, the government of Nigeria, opened fire on peaceful protestors who were protesting to end SARS, a notorious arm of the police force. Worldwide, political injustices are being committed daily, and these acts of political violence prompted my project as a way to inform and also to create avenues for solutions through design.

In reviewing UN human rights articles I reviewed articles 7- equality before the law, article 19 - freedom of opinion and expression, article 5 - no one should be tortured or treated cruelly and article 3 - that everyone has a right to life, liberty and security of person.

In beginning to address this, several stands can be taken, from policies to recognizing situations and fixing them. This centre aims to achieve intelligent discourses to providing solutions to injustice everywhere.

Since 2017, over 110 countries have had notable protests with 900 of them drawing more than 10000 protestors and several anti-government protests drew over a million people wanting to do something about political injustice.

Over 230 anti-government protests have erupted worldwide and several countries across the globe have had politically triggered protests for a myriad of reasons.

In beginning to proffer solutions, the centre proposes three ideologies- acknowledgement, advocacy and education. ACKNOWLEDGING and informing on the issues of political injustice both home and abroad, ADVOCATING by researching and creating action plans and EDUCATING by teaching and curating methods of solutions. The major spaces in the building programming are divided based on the three ideologies, containing spaces such as exhibition spaces to show and discuss the current injustices, the library and resource centre for learning purposes and the multipurpose halls for meetings.

The 2d parti, from inhumanity to equity, a better world is achievable where people are not subjected to violence and disregard for their human rights. one side has inhumane and political injustices worldwide- from residential schools, to reacism, to police brutality to government sponsored terrorism, and the other side is the possibility of a balanced equitable world.

The 3d parti model base with the nails represents the current state of the world with all the issues of discomfort. Each stick represents a stand and the circle represents an equitable world, the three legs being the possible solutions to injustices based on the ideologies- acknowledgement, advocacy and education. The model base consists of poured resin and nails. Each stick is a different material- a pvc pipe and two types of wood.

The downtown area of East Village where the site is located is seen as a non-vehicular user’s paradise. With an undeniable presence of walkways, pathways, bike paths and transit infrastructure, the pedestrian has the right of way here. The presence of the club as a visual arts learning centre should not create a disconnect by discontinuing the movements in the building.

Rather the club aims to utilize its presence downtown to continue as a hub for human circulation. Framing movement within the building by highlighting the public paths of travel throughout the building- between spaces, around spaces and through spaces- and allowing the users move through portions of the public dissemination spaces will create for the users, particularly the nonmembers of the social club an engaging circulatory experience as they move from one floor to the other and experience program adjacencies along the paths of movement. b

Evo[module] as a project is smart affordable housing with an urban park that aims to proffer a solution to the issues of emigration and affordable housing in Calgary. In providing modular 6 x 9 units that can expand or contract with the addition or removal of extra 3 x 3 units, the project responds to the changing lifestyle and needs of the user. The building is equipped with Ai technology, and through shared space and resources, creates a community for the residents. By considering the needs of the user, the project thus evolves over time and grows with the population, and provides a substantial reason for people to live in the city of Calgary.

The play house is an alternative housing project for children who play hockey and compete in home and away games. Play in this context is specific to the experience of sports and the good feeling it brings, as well as uniting people via shared experiences. It provides an all in one solution for the families by incorporating an ice rink as well as residential areas for the duration of the game. The top floors contain the residence spaces for the players and their families. Here, they can come, play and stay. This project is in response to the site analysis done based on the experiences on the site. The hockey experience is the essential part of this project and the experience of the spectators is elevated.

In creating an architecture of discomfort, this project explored excess space as a comfort, and the possibility of limiting space while creating areas of quality was investigated. What would make people willingly give up all the excess space and choose to live in smaller areas or fewer spaces?

The target evolved and became a case of exploring architecture’s relationship to excess through the production and maximization of shared spaces.

The site determined various responses. As such, analysis was done to give insight and inform the choice to combine space and share space. In doing this, the decision to make living an experience in the form of the publicly shared spaces. The use of outdoor amenities and spaces further pushed this narrative as it seemed a method of reducing the isolation of users to their rooms and brought them into these curated spaces that they would want to remain in. Curating experiences while creating interaction was the take away from these collectively.

The project is a kunsthalle that focuses on the spread of information to the public about architecture and the built environment. This information helps the public and those un-knowledgeable about the built environment learn more by allowing them to see the several aspects including the creation of models/ exhibits and the showcasing of these models. People interact with the building by the passageway on the ground floor. This passageway divides the ground floor mass into two volumes, and this passageway runs from the south to the north of the site, creating a means for people coming from the train to disembark and use the pathway. At the centre of the pathway is the exterior exhibition space, and through this, passersby can decide to engage with what is occuring there. At the top of the pathway/ exterior exhibition is an oculus with glass walls that is open to the interior spaces above, to give passersby views into the spaces, thus creating visual views for those passing from one end of the site to the other.

Entwined

Taking a common material and aggregating it to create new qualities, the straw model shows how one seemingly ordinary material can be combined and aggregated to form something new. The straws were braided to form a 6ft long intestinal rope. Along the length of the rope are 5 different types of braids, each giving off a different quality both in elevation and in section when cut longitudinally and latitudinally.

Monoliths

Exploring the qualities of heaviness and lightness are the key objectives of the monolithic objects.

Inspiration was drawn from naturally occuring menhirs and rock formations which are heavy and appear heavy on sight. They are also naturally occuring and organic in form. The monolithic object manipulates form and showcases the contrast of heaviness from the solid mass of the object with the lightness from the apertures. The quality of lightness is fluid, and it seems to float around in a circular shape without a start or end point. The apertures help to portray the seamless quality of lightness, with the presence and absence of light in the openings appearing to enhance the characteristics of the identified dichotomies of heaviness and lightness.

Exploring privacy with the use of a parametrically designed screen. This is a development that allows natural light and ventilation in, while providing occupants with a certain level of privacy from the outside world. Although it produces variation along different paths, there are still openings present that cannot be controlled. This takes away total control of privacy from the user. The screen is applied at different scales, and experienced at different distances 36
