New Sports Complex on Cyncoed Campus.

Update on the two phases.

A new £17m Sports Complex at Cyncoed (illustrated below) will provide the University with a new state of the art facility to complement the range of sports facilities already available at the campus.

Comprising of two phases, the first phase is currently under construction, with a second phase planned for completion

by September 2018.

Phase 1 - New Sports Hall.

The first phase will provide a large sports hall designed to accommodate: * Premier competition level

netball and basketball. * Training and club level courts for badminton (8 number), basketball (2 number) and netball (2 number). * Up to 500 spectator seats on a series of moveable bleacher seat units.

The Sports Hall adjoins the gable end of the existing Tennis Centre and will feature associated storage, changing rooms, and entrance space. Currently under construction with Wilmott Dixon as principal contractor, the first phase is programmed for completion in early 2017.

Phase 2 - New Sports Complex.

The second phase of the project will extend forwards from phase 1 and provide further sports and fitness facilities.

The detailed accommodation could include a swimming pool, gymnasium, squash courts, dance studio, a fitness suite and teaching spaces, as well as associated support spaces.

The design for the Phase 2 sports complex will be developed and submitted for planning approval during 2016, with construction programmed for completion by September 2018.

Conference Services update - Lib Dems and Harpists.

Over the weekend of 6th/7th February, Conference Services were proud to host the annual Welsh Liberal Democrats Conference for the second year running.

The event took place in the School of Management building with presentations and fringe meetings for over 200 people.

Speakers at the conference included Tim Farron, Kirsty Williams and a number of other politicians. There was a great atmosphere with 19 exhibition stands and the Atrium café serving food and drink. All the planning and preparation work paid off as the event was a great success. Some of you may have even seen the televised event on the BBC! We were delighted to welcome back the Cardiff Camac Harp event which took place during the week-end of 12th / 13th March.

The event included workshops, masterclasses and a concert on the Saturday evening with renowned musicians including Catrin Finch, Elinor Bennett and Gwenllian Llŷr. There were over 30 harps on display in the Atrium and the client was delighted to be able to utilise such a fantastic space for their event.

The Conference Team pass on their thanks to all departments who worked with them on these events including Campus Services, Catering, AV, Estates and Security.

Cardiff Met Housing Fayre.

The Accommodation Services annual housing fayre was held at the CSM Atrium again this year. Students were able to pick up the first edition of the Landlord Register. The aim of the fayre is to provide students with as much advice and information on all aspects of renting privately.

Stall holders included: Cardiff Met Accommodation Services, Gas Safety, Fire Safety, Environmental Protection, Waste, Noise Pollution Education, Private Sector Housing, Cardiff Digs, Trading Standards, Housing Help Centre, Police Community Liaison Officers and Traveline Cymru.

Visioning Sustainability for Change module - CSM I’ve recently given a lecture to the module group on the University’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and how to implement a management system. The students have been set one of four environmental challenge areas; Travel – increasing student use of the Met Rider; Travel – increasing student use of cycling to Campus; Resources – increase in one recycling stream or Resources – decrease of food waste. Individually they are tasked with creating a poster on one area, defining main sustainability benefits for the behaviour challenge; define barriers and policy intervention of measures. It will be interesting to review their questionnaire findings and submissions for ideas and opportunities for improving the environmental targets. Updates will follow in the next edition.

Business in Action module - CSM The Business in Action module project is an Employer Organisation real life problem solving scenario, to study, analyse and problem solve.

There are five groups working on the problem statement set by Estates and Facilities, they are required to investigate how a pilot

scheme can be developed to increase recycling within Halls and propose an acceptable solution, including implementation plan and presentation.

Go Green Week This was the fourth year that the University has participated in Go Green week which aims to draw peoples' attention to climate change and opting for greener alternatives! Second year students from the International Hospitality & Events and International Tourism & Events programmes worked hard in conjunction with the University’s Environmental Performance Manager to arrange and deliver a successful programme of events for the week.

The response to this initiative in the week was fantastic with over 11 A4 photocopying boxes being collected in total over the two Campus’. As a result of the positive response collection boxes will remain in Santander Bank, CSAD Reception, CSM Reception and Cyncoed Main Reception for the next few weeks. I would like to thank Carla Morgan for all her efforts in helping with the initiative.

Prize for the best donation goes to Mr Dave Pitt. Doesn’t he look delighted to be able to participate and donate some new ladies pants.

Students were tasked with deciding the event types and locations, and this year they decided to concentrate on a recycling and re-use theme. There were different activities each day, including: Revamp your Lamp, Awareness Selfies; Clothing Swap-a-Thon; Smoothie Station; Art Recycling Competition; Video Game – swap and play and Cake Sales. Lots of social media activity to promote the events.

Smalls for all – a pantastic charity that collects and distributes underwear to women and children in Africa, who need help.

Environmental Audits.

Cardiff Met has collaborated with our Students Union to offer students the opportunity to train as internal environmental auditors; and to put the skills learned into action by participating in the 2015/16 internal audit plan of the Environmental Management System.

Three students expressed an interest in the training this year and attended the course along with Cardiff Met volunteer staff, offering their experience and skills in the field of environmental auditing. The auditors have already completed internal audits as part of teams of staff / students and have provided recommendations for improvements and identified and recognised areas of good practice across the University. One of the students, Thea said: “A fantastic training day gaining great auditing experience that will help me later in my career!

Cardiff Met Sports.

Continued from the front page ...including the Welsh Indoor Athletics Championship, the European Cross-Fit Championship and, this year, two U18 soccer international matches between Wales and Czech Republic. In addition, some of the BUCS events are now attracting up to one thousand competitors to campus across a range of sports.

This year has also seen the successful development and launch of the CardiffMet Sport App that provides access to booking information for parents and students, plus essential information links for CSS students. In the next academic year it will be expanded to link to the University’s Athletic Union site and segmented push messaging will be added to the Apps functionality.

Sport Cardiff. Two year s ago, in response to the financial challenges facing local government in Wales, Cardiff City Council entered into a formal partnership with the University through CardiffMet Sport. The benefits to the City Council focused on the need to safeguard the development of sport across the City and further develop their relationship with the University. This type of partnership is unique in Wales and, across Britain, only Southampton Solent has developed a relationship that equates to what is currently being delivered by us. Now about to enter its 3rd year of operation, the partnership has matured along with the eighteen members of staff employed to deliver the City’s Whole Sport Plan. In particular it has delivered:

* The Cardiff School Games - one of the largest school competitions in Britain. * Wales’ first promotion and delivery plan to encourage women and girls to increase their engagement in physical activity under the brand Girls Together. * Over one hundred work experience opportunities for Cardiff Met students.

Performance and Recreational Sport.

Within the University, performance sport is managed by the SU , with CardiffMet Sport providing the strength and conditioning support to teams and individual University sports scholars. Cardiff Met has always punched above its weight with the BUCS Championship. In 2015/16 we finished 14th, one place above Cardiff University! We will also be looking to further expand the current intra-mural sport provision over the coming years.

Cycle Servicing and Police marking at Llandaff.

A busy day for Dr Bike.

February saw a busy Go Green Week with several successful initiatives. This included a Dr Bike session that saw 41 bicycles belonging to staff and student serviced and a further 30 security marked by the Police.

The Dr Bike session was such a success that more are planned to be held throughout the year - more details to follow.

April 18th will see the launch of the annual Cardiff Met Tax Benefit Cycle Scheme where staff can save hundreds of pounds off the price of a cycle purchase. Call Neil on extension 6712 for further details.

No Smoking Day at Plas Gwyn.

Lisa Ah-Mun held her annual ‘No Smoking Day at Plas Gwyn Campus’ on Wednesday 9th March, where students were ‘encouraged’ not to smoke for the entire day. The odd students who broke the rules, gamely donned Hi-Vis vests and collected 20 cigarette butts each. Sounds harsh but they were rewarded with a lucky dip winning chocolate. Students were also encouraged to give up their cigarettes in exchange for pieces of fruit. A great initiative that the students really responded to well.

Working with students.

The Catering & Hospitality Services has been working closely with 2nd year students from the Cardiff School of Health Science to further develop a new Eatwell food range to be available on campus in early September. The aim of the exercise is to help further develop the “Eatwell” healthier food range by using the CSHS to create new product developments as part of their course module. Sam Richard created a pea and mint falafel wraps and Alice Grant came up with jacket potatoes filled with beef and onion

Smartwater at Cardiff Met. Security at Cardiff Met are working alongside Smartwater to reduce thefts on campuses. Smartwater offer an affiliate scheme whereby staff members can also take out a private subscription for home use at a reduced rate of £25. This scheme has been extended to family and friends, allowing all to purchase at same price as staff members.

Fairtrade - Cardiff Metropolitan University Catering & Hospitality Service in conjunction with the Students Union are working towards Cardiff Met regaining the Fairtrade accreditation.

Cardiff Met are actively supporting the Fairtrade fortnight starting on 29th of February 2016 to ensure that awareness is maintained.

The unfolding of language.

On Saturday 23rd April William Shakespeare will be 451 years old. Although you may not realise it, most of us speak his words in our daily lives. Many of the phrases he coined are still widely used today. Including: “For goodness sake” - Henry VIII “Neither here nor there” - Othello “Mum’s the word” - Henry V Part II “Knock knock! What students really mean.

Last December, a few members of the Cyncoed and Plas Gwyn Halls team headed to London to take part in a course focusing on working with cultural diversity. There are now more and more International Students choosing to come to the UK to study, so it is essential that we know how to communicate effectively and give the students the best experience whilst they are staying at Cardiff Met. I have made a note of some of the key things we learnt during the course.
