Welcome to our April edition. I hope you’re all enjoying your Easter Break.

It’s lovely to spend time with your family and friends and catch up in doors and in the garden, it’s been great to see some sunshine and long may it continue. If your a keen golfer and fancy a round of golf, Rise Bridge Golf Center is under New ownership and is well worth a visit. (see page 17) Chiane is back in Great Ormand Street, but has enjoyed her time at home with her family; she has been Horse riding and had lots of fun. My son Reece who attends Woodlands school in Basildon approached the school to do a non uniform day in aid of Chiane, which raised £1,150 !! If you have any fund raising ideas and would like to help or would like to approach their local school please contact me and I will do my best to help arrange anything for you. Get in the Garden!

April is a busy time in the garden many shrubs will benefit from a trim this month to keep them tidy and encourage new growth. Shorten the shoots of cape fuchsia, cutting back to strong sideshoots, shaping the plant and cutting out the dead wood. Hard prune, tall old stems on Buddleja and other fast-growing shrubs that flower on new wood. Many dogwoods and willows, grown as clumps and valued for their colourful winter stems, should also be cut back hard now, right down to a stubby base, about 30cm (12in) from the ground to ensure lots of new growth.

Complete rose pruning in March before they start into strong growth. Shorten all shoots, cutting back to an outward-facing bud, Clip old flowers off winterflowering heathers, take care not to trim back into old wood.

Mark any congested clumps of Spring bulbs that have flowered poorly with a label to remind you to lift and divide them later in the year. A little attention to spring-flowering pots will ensure they look their best right through until May. Pick off dead flowerheads from primulas and winter-flowering pansies to encourage plants to develop further flowers. Also

pick off the faded heads from spring bulbs, such as daffodils, but leave their foliage intact. Compost in pots can also dry out, so check with a finger to see how moist it is, and water well if it has dried out.

Many summer-flowering bulbs can be planted in March and April. In mild areas, dahlia tubers can be planted outside, covered with about 10cm (4in) of soil. In cold regions, delay planting until later in April.

In the coming months, plant groups of gladioli at intervals to extend their flowering season. Grow lilies in pots so that they can be moved into the garden to fill any gaps.

If you have any gaps in borders you can sow quickgrowing hardy annuals directly into the soil during April not forgetting to Sow sweet peas outside where you want them to flower.

Lastly sit back with a nice cuppa and enjoy looking over all your hard work!

Apple & Blackberry Pie Recipe Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

2 1/2 pounds apples, peeled, cored, sliced 2 cups blackberries, fresh or frozen 1 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons flour 1 tablespoon butter, cut in small pieces Pie shell for two-crust 9-inch pie

Preparation: Preheat oven to 375°.

Mix the apples and blackberries together in a large bowl.

In another bowl, combine the sugar, spices, and flour; gently mix into the fruit mixture.

Line a 9-inch pie plate with bottom crust. Spoon the fruit filling into the prepared crust, then dot with butter. Top with the remaining pie crust, leaving a slight overhang. Crimp the edges of the top and bottom crusts together, sealing the fruit into the shell. Whisk the egg yolk and milk together, and brush this wash over the top crust. With a sharp knive, make several slits in the top crist to allow steam to escape.

Bake at 375° for 1 to 1 1/4 hours, or until the apples are tender. If crust seems to be browning too quickly, reduce the heat to 325 degrees.

HELP ME FIGHT CANCER Appeal for Chiane

An update on Chiane.

We are back at Great Ormond Street and Chiane is an inpatient for a few days while tests are being carried out to establish how her body is recovering after the last high dose Thiotepa.

next month we will know more once all tests are completed and we will have a better picture as to how Chiane is doing to make the necessary decisions regarding any future treatments.

The good news is that we continued with HLA match platelet transfusion from 1 donor, (despite being told that Chiane won’t benefit from it) luckily she did, and her platelet levels today went up from 5 to 75, which is an increase of 1200% benefit compared to normal platelet transfusion. She has responded well and her platelets incremented which is all very positive and good news! Hopefully Chiane’s body will be strong enough for her second course of Thiotepa.
