Thank you for reading another edition of your Keep It Local Magazine. I'd like to start off by congratulating all the parents for making it through another 6 weeks holidays. It was touch and go for a little while but school is back and so is your free time!

Along with the start of the school term, September is also National Honey Month. In the spirit of this we have themed our front cover and have a honey based recipe waiting for you as well.

Anyone who struggles with our monthly Mindbenders, be sure to give them a try this month. We have taken it particularly easy on you. If you're still pulling your hair out the answers are at the back for you.

Clementine & Honey Couscous Pistachios, clementines, honey and cinnamon make couscous a perfect breakfast dish. Serve with fruit and yogurt.

Ingredients: 100g pistachio or other nuts 300g couscous ¼ tsp ground cinnamon, plus more to serve 8 clementines (seedless are best) 1 tsp butter

Method

2 tbsp runny honey, plus more to serve 1 tsp orange flower water (optional) 300g fresh or frozen raspberries 500g pot reduced-fat Greek-style yogurt , to serve

STEP 1. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Spread the nuts over a baking sheet and toast for 5-8 mins until pale golden Meanwhile, put the couscous and cinnamon into a large bowl. Finely grate the zest from 2 clementines, then squeeze their juice into a pan with the zest. Add the butter, honey and 200ml water and bring to the boil. Pour this over the couscous, cover with cling film, then leave to absorb for 10 mins.

STEP 2. Using a serrated knife, peel, then thinly slice the remaining clementines. Sprinkle with the orange flower water, if using. Roughly chop the nuts.

STEP 3. Fluff up the couscous with a fork, then mix in most of the nuts. Serve the couscous in bowls, topped with the clementines and raspberries. Eat with a spoonful of yogurt, an extra sprinkle of cinnamon and squeeze of honey.

Back in Show Business!

The Towngate Theatre is finally Back in Show Business!

The popular Basildon-based venue has been closed for live performances since March 2020, in accordance with the national lockdown to prevent further spread of Covid-19. Whilst the team have continually worked throughout the pandemic, the Theatre are thrilled to finally reopen for productions from September 2021.

Their stylish and modern Café Bar has also reopened, offering a brand new Menu and Afternoon Tea special as part of the relaunch.

With a large variety of seating both indoor and outdoor, there are plenty of areas available for anyone wishing to visit and enjoy a selection of light bites, main meals, lunch options, hot and cold drinks, and alcoholic beverages.

The Towngate have also established a new ‘Book and Visit with Confidence’ campaign which outlines a number of guidelines to oversee the health and the safety of visitors and staff.

All measures will be continually reviewed and updated in accordance with the latest guidance and advice issued by the Government.

Theatre Manager, Simon Scott-Pearce said: “It has been an incredibly challenging time for the Towngate and the Theatre industry. However, we are thrilled that we are finally ‘Back in Show Business’ and can welcome our loyal supporters back to the Towngate. We also have a brand new brochure out, which showcases all the fantastic productions we have lined up this Autumn season.

We hope that our ‘Book and Visit with Confidence’ guidelines will reassure any patrons who may have some concerns about returning to our venue. If anyone was still experiencing worries about attending a production or the Café Bar, we would welcome them to contact us directly and we will be happy to explain our procedures to help alleviate their concerns.

Funny Face The Egremont Crab Fair Several years ago, while in the Lake District we stumbled on the small market town of Egremont.

They were preparing for their annual Crab Fair, which I (wrongly) assumed had something to do with the sea creature. A chatty lady in the newsagent explained that every year the townsfolk of Egremont hold the Crab Fair as an annual celebration after harvest time. The first documented fair was in 1267 and has been held continuously since this time, except for the War years...and latterly the total poo-fest that passed for 2020 /21. The Lord of Egremont started the tradition of giving away crab apples, the 'crabs' from which the fair takes its name. It is a traditional fair, with singing, dancing, races, pipe-smoking, and stalls selling cider. We felt as though we'd stumbled into the Shires and Gandalf might appear at any moment. One of the highlights of the day was the celebrated World Gurning Championship.

To 'gurn' means to 'snarl like a dog, look savage, distort the countenance'. Contestants have to pull a grotesque face through a horse collar, known as a braffin. There were many contenders and some intense competition. It was clear even to an outsider that this was seriously competitive stuff.

There are competing stories about how gurning started. The most popular says it originated from the mockery of the village idiot - the townsfolk would throw a horse's collar over him and make him pull funny faces in exchange for pints of ale.

My favourite is the one about the drunken farmer, who is said to have arrived home very late one night to find his wife in an 'uncharitable' mood.

Apparently he shouted, "stop gurning, woman!" and thrust a horse collar over her head. At this assault her facial expressions and language intensified to the point that the art of 'gurning' was born.

However it originated, it was a fun way to spend the day. The next Crab Fair is scheduled for September 2022, so you have a year to practice your funny faces!

Prepare for Spring

September is the time to plan your spring bulb purchases. The best selections always sell out quickly and it’s frustrating when the prettiest crocuses and tulips are not available.

If you’re planting bulbs for the first time, or in a new area of the garden it helps to have a colour scheme in mind. In a boy-dominated house (three sons and a husband) I like to give some areas of my garden a more girly theme. Tulips are great for this purpose (and are some of my favourite flowers). Try ‘La Belle Epoque’, which is a frothy peony-flowered tulip with pale coffee petals flushed with pink. I would contrast the texture of its showier blooms with another more traditional tulip, Pink Diamond’ or ‘Apricot Beauty’. If you’d prefer less ‘pretty’ and more drama try the almost-black ‘Paul Scherer’, which should flower in late April or early May and makes a good foil to the aforementioned Apricot Beauty, which flowers at the same time.

I garden on quite dry limey soil, and I’ve mentioned before my love affair with Bath Chatto’s planting schemes. Sadly, she died in 2018 but her gardens and trust continue and are well worth a visit.

This year on their recommendation I’m trying Ornithogalum pyrenaicum, known poetically as the spiked star of Bethlehem, and more prosaically as Bath asparagus.. It has subtle, green flowers and grows to 50-60cm tall. It pairs well with silverleaved plants like Stachys, which grows like a weed in my garden, and best of all, once established you can harvest it like asparagus.

I like to plant up a few pots this month, for some late autumn and winter colour. I favour Rust-toned heucheras, paired with miniature grasses such as Carex buchananii; Oxblood-coloured ajuga, silverleaved thymes and small-leaved trailing ivies make great combinations too.

I have sempervivums shoved in crevices all over my garden. They are incredibly hardy and will survive all manner of frost and poor weather. We have a lovely sheltered sunny patio with a small table and chairs which is lovely to sit out on even in the winter. A few years ago, I started planting up shallow terracotta trays and a couple of old tin bowls with differing varieties of house leek. I mix one-part horticultural grit to one part peat-free multipurpose compost for the planting mix, and make sure any container has lots of drainage. Handy tip - top dress with grit or stones if you don’t want the birds to start digging around scattering your planting mix and unearthing your plants! I learned the hard way!

These little flat planting bowls make a lovely table display and also make wonderful birthday and… erm…Christmas gifts.
