We are having such a mild winter here in the South East that you might be tempted to start some gardening jobs a little early, I’ve been slightly tempted myself but have a niggling feeling that the weather might well still turn on us yet, please keep in mind that the Great British weather can be a fickle friend to the gardener and try to refrain from going too spring crazy.

February is the time to prune back Wisteria’s and conservatory climbers. Winter flowering shrubs should be cut back once they have finished blooming and all shrubs should be fed with Chicken Manure.

Chicken manure provides Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium to you plant’s, it also adds organic matter and increases the water holding capacity of the soil around the roots of your plants.

Clear any fallen leaves away from Snowdrops and other early bulbs so that you don’t miss them flowering, if necessary thin bulbs out once the blooms have died back.

Lastly I’ve seen people out cropping their lawns very low already, this isn’t a good idea just yet. If the blades of grass are starting to bend with weight I would advise just nipping the ends off by having your mower on its highest setting if you really can’t wait.

However as we are not out of the woods yet as far as frosts are concerned I would hold off a little longer to reduce the chance of frost damage.

Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas 4. Seal the pork in a frying pan, then place in a large oven tray sprayed with Fry Light

Roughly chop your vegetables (if using frozen there’s no need).

3.

Boil the kettle and place the canned tomatoes, passata, piri piri seasoning, mixed herbs, salt and pepper and the stock cubes into a large jug. Add approximately 50ml of boiling water and stir until the stock cubes have dissolved.

4.

Place the vegetables over the pork in the tray, and then pour over the seasoned tomato mixture. Place in the oven for around 25-30 minutes minutes or until the pork and vegetables are thoroughly cooked.

5.

Serve with either salad and/or couscous.(counting Syns on Original for the couscous)

Health Monthly Registered Nurse

If you have a child with asthma in your family, you’re probably all awake at night! In my 25 years in healthcare, my biggest satisfaction is when I treat a child as with Bowen technique, the family will usually see a big change in just a couple of weeks or in some cases, days. Parents often comment “he’s a different child” as the Bowen moves gently relax tight muscles (yes, even tiny babies can have tense muscles) and your child is more relaxed and sleeps and eats better.

I often see babies with bronchiolitis who have been in hospital and have ongoing coughs, wheezing and continual coughs and colds. WIth Bowen , treatment is a sequence of gentle rolling moves over muscles and soft tissue, to persuade the body to start its own healing process, adjust and rebalance. When I treat a child, we read a book or play at the same time and treatment takes just a few minutes.

How does Bowen work with asthma?

The diaphragm normally contracts when breathing in and then relaxes to allow us to breathe out.

With an asthma-like condition, the diaphragm may be constantly partly in contraction. If a trigger, such as a cold or illness, or an allergy is detected, the diaphragm seems to contract more and more, allowing the asthmatic to breath in but increasingly not to breath out. Bowen persuades the muscles, especially the diaphragm, to relax more and more.

This typically brings about a reduction in asthma attacks and their severity, especially amongst young children.

What about medication?

Asthma treatment is usually inhalers, sometimes courses of oral steriods and antibiotics for chest infections. As a parent you are probably always eager to get your child off steroids as soon as possible.

Most children who have Bowen treatment respond very quickly so, sometimes medicines have been reduced quite soon after treatment has started. It is very important to realise that medication has been prescribed to protect your child from the danger of a major attack and I therefore always recommend that reducing medicines is always done under the guidance of your doctor and asthma nurse.You may well be able to reduce medicines quite soon after Bowen treatment.

Essex Police have appointed a new Basildon district commander, Chief Insp Glen Pavelin, who is responsible for all police officers and neighbourhood policing across the area. He has taken over the post since Chief Insp Rachel Nolan left for a role at police headquarters.

Chief Insp Pavelin said: “I am very pleased to be appointed as the district commander for the Basildon district. I have previously served in a variety of uniformed roles across Central Division, which covers Chelmsford, Uttlesford, Braintree and Maldon, and more recently at police headquarters.

“I am passionate about Neighbourhood Policing, as most of my service has been spent in operational roles serving the public by working in partnership with other agencies and the community to address local policing issues. I look forward to driving a motivated and capable team of officers and build upon an array of past successes as we move into 2012.

“Basildon is a very diverse district, with a booming town and night-time economy, as well as having beautiful places to visit like Wat Tyler and Lake Meadows. Coming into 2012, Basildon is also lucky to have the new sporting village, which will be used as an official training ground for the 2012 Olympics Games.

“With this diversity brings its own unique policing challenges, but I can assure you we will embrace the challenges ahead and we will work tirelessly to reduce crime, reassure the public and bring offenders to justice. I will ensure that we listen to your concerns and if you call us, that we will respond appropriately.
