Welcome to our latest issue of VOX!
This issue – our fifteenth – covers the summer months from June to August. Regardless of the changing workplace landscape, the passage of time often seems to be inextricably linked to the school holidays. With the changing work patterns, increased working from home and many families going away with their children over the holidays, the six weeks through the end of July to the start of September will see a quieter commute for those still heading into the office. The warmer weather also offers some people to take their work outdoors. Even when this isn’t an option, the increase in ‘netwalking’ opportunities still provides the chance to get outside and enjoy the better weather.
What’s in store?
As ever – and we hope you’ll agree – we have some super articles for you in our latest issue. We were lucky enough to secure an interview with Nina Barbour from the Bolesworth Estate, ahead of the Bolesworth International presented by Al Shira’aa, a world-class equestrian showjumping event where excellence in sport meets unparalleled business opportunities (page 28). We also met the team behind Minera Studios Cymru (page 16) to find out more about their plans for Wrexham.
Coming up, we have our next EZ Training session on 24 June and you can find out more about it and how to book on page 16. Despite an ‘overwhelming’ number of entries, the college – based in Wrexham, Llysfasi, Deeside and Northop – has four finalists in two categories at this year’s Wales Food and Drink Awards.
Iâl Bakery apprentices Naomi Spaven and Ella Muddiman, and Maelor Foods’ Belinda Rossouw, are nominees in the ‘Rising Star’ section, while Niki Culkin, a Quality Manager at Knolton Farmhouse Cheese in Wrexham, will vie for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ title.
Work-based Learning Manager Kate Muddiman congratulated the quartet and said: “I am absolutely delighted our four learners have made it to the final of the Wales Food and Drink Awards. Their hard work, dedication and passion for their craft has truly paid off – I couldn't be prouder of their achievements. Reaching the final is a testament to their commitment and talent. It’s fantastic to see their efforts being recognised on such a prestigious platform.”
The success story continues, as Wrexham AFC has won another promotion battle taking them up to a higher league. Defeat for Wycombe at Leyton Orient and victory for Wrexham at Charlton ensured the Welsh club would finish in second place to Birmingham City – ensuring their nearest rival Wycombe were in the play-offs. Next season the opposition will be even tougher, against the likes of former Premier League outfits like Leicester City, Southampton and Ipswich. We’ll have to wait another season to find out if this story has its Hollywood ending.
Chester-based recruitment agency Gap Personnel has been acquired by Rcapital in a corporate carve-out, backed by a £23.5m facility from Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance. Established in 1997, GAP Personnel specialises in the industrial, professional, technical and healthcare sectors, with annual revenues of approximately £200m. Rcapital has now acquired BeNEXT, the parent company of Gap Personnel, from Open Up Group Inc. Gap Personnel was purchased by Japanese-based Open Up Group in 2020, but due to a strategic decision, was deemed no longer core by Open Up Group Inc.
To fund the acquisition and refinance existing debt, Rcapital secured a £23.5m facility. The funding will also support Gap Personnel’s continued growth, supporting it as it invests in its IT infrastructure, which will drive greater efficiencies within the business.
Following a refresh, Chester staple Oddfellows relaunched at the end of April, with a VIP evening on Friday 25 April – with complimentary fizz and cocktails from ThinK Wine. This popular, invite-only evening was followed by and a weekend of ‘mischief, magic, and a little mayhem as we rediscover the unexpected at Oddfellows Chester’.
Enterprise Cheshire and Warrington (ECW) and Cheshire West and Chester Council have appointed a specialist team to develop a North West Skills Mapping Plan, ensuring that training and skills development match the demands of the region’s growing industries.
The appointment comes amid a focus in the North West to build a workforce of the future, ensuring workers and businesses are equipped to support the clean energy transition, and associated opportunities in industry and advanced manufacturing.
With major energy and industrial projects already underway in the area, this initiative will provide clear pathways into high-quality, futureproof jobs, reinforcing the North West’s position as the UK’s leading region for industrial transformation.
The project, funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Office for Clean Energy Jobs, will identify workforce and skills needs in support of the clean energy transition, align training with employer demand and support businesses in accessing the talent they need to remain competitive.
Specialist consultancy Opergy has been appointed to lead the Skills Mapping Plan, while Cogent Skills will conduct a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) with a sample of local energy intensive businesses, to ensure training and skills provision directly address industry requirements.
Insurance brokers JCL are today announcing a three-year sponsorship with Hickstead – securing its position as the title sponsor of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Cup at the Agria Royal International Horse Show.
This renowned competition is open to the highest-ranked national riders in Great Britain, with past champions including Harriet Biddick, Shane Breen, David Simpson and Jessica Burke. The company’s involvement extends beyond financial backing, demonstrating a shared passion for the sport and a vision for its continued success at both national and international levels.

Cheshire Society of Architects (CSA) appointed a new President in April. The new chair is Millie Thompson, Architect at Chambers Conservation in Tattenhall, who takes over from Lucy Crowther, Chartered Project Architect and RIBA Conservation Registrant at Kepczyk Pearce Sanderson.
The society exists to support members, discuss professional matters, influence RIBA policy, collaborate on promoting the profession and generally create the means by which members may support one another and strengthen the RIBA.

Pioneering research brings Muslim perspectives to the fore in addressing risks to humanity
A team of UK researchers has begun an ambitious three-year project exploring diverse ways of thinking about some of the major existential risks facing humanity, with a specific focus on Muslim voices. The project aims to shine a light on how greater consideration of values-based cultures such as Islam can lead to more effective problem-solving – helping us to address global challenges that scientific approaches alone have failed to solve. These existential risks include pandemic diseases, the climate emergency, nuclear conflict and threats from potentially malevolent developments in Artificial Intelligence.
Led by Professor Caroline Tee at the University of Chester and funded by a £1.2m grant from Templeton Religion Trust, the international project called Muslims, the Secular and Existential Risk (MUSER) seeks to bridge the gap between the traditional, secularised field of existential risk studies and the lived reality for many ordinary people. As most of the world professes a religious affiliation, the project team will explore how imperative it is that religious perspectives on these questions are taken seriously.
Cheshire family attraction The Ice Cream Farm has been recognised by the National Autistic Society for creating an ‘autism-friendly environment’ for visitors. The UK’s leading charity for autistic people awarded the Tattenhall business an Autism Friendly Award, citing the “range of reasonable adjustments offered to autistic people, including Special Educational Needs (SEN) Exclusive Events & Sessions and a virtual queuing service” among the numerous grounds for its accreditation.
Commented CEO and owner of The Ice Cream Farm, Jonathan Fell: “We’re passionate about creating an inclusive play attraction and family experience for both those living in and visiting Cheshire. We have, and continue to, invest heavily in our inclusive offering. So the Autism Friendly Award from the National Autistic Society has given us a real boost, proving that the changes we’re making to our business are best supporting autistic people – in particular young children – and their families.”
The Ice Cream Farm has held monthly SEN sessions for many years. Recently, all members of the team have undertaken autism awareness training and a fully-accessible toilet has been added to the site.
New awards launched to find and celebrate Chester’s ‘brightest young business brains’
The city’s ‘brightest young business brains’ will be honoured in a unique new awards ceremony, which has been launched by the Chester Business Club. Children at senior school, sixth-formers and those aged up to 25 running a business in Chester, will have the chance to scoop prizes in the newly-created CBC Young Person Business Awards.
Prizes will include access to mentoring from members of the Chester Business Club, hundreds of pounds of Chester Bid vouchers to spend in the City and tickets to a Summer awards ceremony where trophies and certificates will be handed out.
The Awards will be split into two categories. The first, The Vision Awards, will be open to school children and those at sixth-form attending schools and colleges in the CH1 to CH4 postcodes. Those applying must come up with a brilliant new business idea for Chester and explain how they’d make it happen.
The second category, the Young Entrepreneur Award, is open to anyone aged up to 25 who has been running a business in Chester for at least a year.
Judging criteria for this award is also online. Winners will be announced in a special Awards night at the Chester Business Club’s Annual Banquet in July.
Jamie Christon has been named the new chair of Marketing Cheshire’s Advisory Board, with a pledge to continue the improvement and growth of tourism across Cheshire and Warrington. Currently CEO of Chester Zoo, the UK’s most visited paid attraction outside of London, Jamie has been a board member and director since 2021. He brings more than two decades of tourism experience and leadership to the role, as well as significant national profile, including through his current role chairing the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Marketing Cheshire is the tourism body for Cheshire and Warrington and a Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) accredited by VisitEngland. The organisation works with councils, attractions, leisure and hospitality businesses to promote tourism and market the region as one of the best places to invest, work, live and visit in the UK.
Jamie has succeeded Cheshire entrepreneur Trevor Brocklebank, chair of the Marketing Cheshire Board since 2020. Jamie said: “I’m delighted to take on the role. I will bring my experience and passion for the place and work with partners to promote Cheshire and Warrington as one of the best destinations in the UK. We have incredible attractions across the region, amazing hospitality and a hugely warm welcome. Our location means we are well placed to work closer with Liverpool, Manchester and North Wales to attract more overseas visitors. I’m also very aware of the challenges our visitor economy businesses are facing, not least rising costs and competition. But there are big opportunities ahead and I look forward to working with the board, and the small but mighty team at Marketing Cheshire, to grow tourism across the region. And I’d also like to pay tribute to the leadership our outgoing chair Trevor provided during a turbulent time for the visitor economy and wish him every success for the future.”
Trevor Brocklebank said: “Congratulations to Jamie on his appointment. He has been a hugely influential board member and key player in Cheshire tourism for many years and an excellent appointment as chair.”
The 2024 King’s Awards for Enterprise saw 252 businesses recognised across four categories nationally: International Trade, Innovation, Sustainable Development and Promoting Opportunity through Social Mobility.
Robert Davis, Group CEO at EA Technology, a previous winner of two awards said: “Cheshire organisations submitted 37 applications and received seven awards in 2024. Although entering for a 2026 award sounds a long way off, the new award application window is from 6 May to 12 September 2025, so it gives businesses and organisations the time to prepare and submit their entry (or entries) to give it their best shot to be successful.”

This Easter, Chester once again became a haven for foodies, families and funseekers as thousands flocked to the Taste Cheshire Food and Drink Festival. Over the course of the weekend, festival-goers basked in sunshine while indulging in the very best local cuisine, watching live chef demos, and soaking up the vibrant community spirit that defines this beloved event.
The festival’s line up of culinary talent delighted audiences. Celebrity chef Phil Vickery captivated crowds with his cooking demonstrations, showcasing the flair that has made him a household name. Nisha Katona brought her signature charm as she mingled with traders and customers, elevating the atmosphere with her genuine warmth and enthusiasm. Meanwhile, local BBQ maestro from Big 5 Catering impressed food enthusiasts with smoky, mouth-watering creations during his demos.
The weekend was alive with music and entertainment that added to the festive buzz. The warm-hearted spirit extended beyond food and music, with attendees raising substantial funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd—a testament to the community’s generosity.
Simon Edmondson, who heads up Chester Business Network with his wife Win, has been selected as Regional Chair with FSB and will now go on to assemble a ‘council’ of volunteers to support him and the staff team with the organisation’s aims and objectives.
He said: “I will be banging the drum for our small business community at all times and there’s certainly no shortage of issues at the moment to get stuck in to. I want to help and support FSB staff and volunteers with the various causes we champion as an organisation – but it’s all ultimately about creating a better business environment in which our members can grow and prosper.”
The Wrexham City Board’s ability to influence a brighter future for Wrexham has been further strengthened with the recent announcement that Wrexham will receive a share of the UK Government’s £1.5 billion Plan for Neighbourhoods.
This funding programme is an evolution of the Long-Term Plan for Towns, as set up by the previous government, and aims to foster stronger, better-connected and healthier communities across the UK. Wrexham is set to benefit from up to £20m over the next decade.
The funding will empower the recently established Wrexham City Board to continue working alongside residents and businesses, to determine how best to use the investment to drive local growth, enhance public services and create new opportunities for the people of Wrexham.
It is a major boost for Wrexham’s regeneration, with funding available for high streets, green spaces, arts and culture, youth facilities, health, housing and transport – all areas that the City Board has identified as key priorities through community engagement.
Said Rachel Clacher, CBE, Chair of the Wrexham City Board: "We are absolutely delighted to be doing the work we’re doing in Wrexham. This is important, vital work and we are deeply committed to securing a brighter future for our city.”

A popular Wrexham-based tourist attraction offered an egg-citing range of Easter-themed interactive activities suitable for the whole family this year. From egg and spoon obstacle-filled races to decorating bunny shaped gingerbread biscuits, Xplore! Science Discovery Centre set out a jam-packed schedule of entertainment throughout the school holidays.
The North Wales centre unveiled its rebranded ‘amazing eggsperiments’ live science show, which hosted a variety of new demonstrations, to crack open the mysteries of physics and chemistry during the 30minute programme.
Xplore!’s education coordinator Cerian Kassam said: “I truly believe the activities we offered this Easter creatively combine science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) with Easterthemed fun. We put a lot of consideration into each activity, to ensure we have something for everyone, with both new and existing family favourites making an appearance.”
Volunteers from P&A Group recently participated in the annual Mold Spring Clean –Keeping Mold Tidy! (Cadw’r Wyddgrug yn Daclus!) event. Springy, the Mold Spring Clean Mascot, joined forces with P&A Panda, P&A Group’s mascot. The two mascots, who first met over 12 years ago, have been champions of a cleaner, greener community ever since. Mold Spring Clean is a vital community initiative supported by residents, schools, businesses and local organisations, co-ordinated by Mold Town Council in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy, Mold Plastic Reduction and Flintshire County Council.
A Harry Styles inspired tour, a ‘perfect 10’ hotel and a fun-filled ice cream farm were among visitor economy gems scooping Marketing Cheshire Tourism Awards 2025. The awards from the region’s tourism body Marketing Cheshire champion everything from family attractions, wedding venues and holiday parks, to accommodation providers, pubs and restaurants. Qualifying winners are automatically entered into the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence, to compete against the best in the country.

A national award-winning video production company, Knew Productions has appointed a new video editor to its growing team. Anni Ruponen joins the Rossett-based studio, bringing with her extensive broadcast experience. While working in her native Finland, Anni edited major television formats like The Voice, Temptation Island and Dancing With The Stars for the Banijay Group in Helsinki.
This media experience complements the existing team of camera operators and directors’ with TV and film backgrounds, ensuring that Knew Productions continues to deliver the standard of business video that’s both creative and polished.
Margaret Knew, director at Knew Productions, said: “Anni has been with us for over a month now and she is already bringing a fresh energy to our post-production work. Born in Glasgow, and with 15 years client-side experience and over 30 years consultancy-side experience, Phil previously ran a branding consultancy in London, but relocated to North Wales in March 2021.
The Chester Civic Trust has presented its Judges special award 2025 to Okells Hoole for their work restoring and bringing to life the former Co-op building in Walker Street. The awards which this year celebrate the Chester Civic Trust’s 65th year, recognise the best changes to the Chester property and civic scene and encourage higher standards of design and maintenance in Chester’s public realm.
The judges said; “It is great to see that Okells has refurbished the building to provide a new shop selling plants, homeware and gifts together with a café. This is a really good addition to the vibrant Hoole local shopping quarter.”
A University of Chester student and amateur boxer has been recognised for his ‘knockout’ business idea which looks set to be a winner among his sporting field. Basel Abboud has taken his idea for an app to help boxers find sparring partners from a lightbulb moment to a polished pitch thanks to support from his lecturers at the University’s Business School, along with the Venture Programme for entrepreneurs at Chester. Combining his passion for the sport and his business initiative, he developed the idea for the app, called Rumble Buddy, while studying the entrepreneurship module this year as part of his degree.

The film industry has long been underrepresented in North Wales, with much of Welsh investment heading towards Cardiff and South Wales. However, with the increased interest in North Wales and particularly in Wrexham and North East Wales, three locally-based stage and screen actors have come together to create the production company, Minera Studios Cymru. Based in Kingsmill, Wrexham, the new the narrative based production company aim to provide a creative hub, nurturing local talent on both sides of the camera. We caught up with Dean Fagan, Ruby Snape and Ian PulestonDavies, to find out what the studio will mean for the city and the region.
It’s a movements
Dean explains: “We set up Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting to provide guidance and help actors refine their craft, to build a lasting foundation for a successful acting career, and Minera Film Studio has evolved from it. We realised that the industry wasn’t here, but we had an opportunity to change that.”
Ruby continued: “There is a clear potential for Wrexham and north east Wales to be at the forefront of making top-quality TV and film in the country. Wrexham has the infrastructure already in place. We just need to help create the opportunities on both sides of the camera, to realise creative dreams.”
Ian added: “Personally, like many other actors and scriptwriters, I was tired of not being in control of where my scripts went to. I wanted to have more control of what happened to my work. The three of us are experienced, seasoned actors, with a lot of industry knowledge. Coming together to form our own production company means
we can pool that expertise. Plus, we have discovered strengths we didn’t even know we had.”
Between them, Dean brings his production skills, Ian excels as creative director, while Ruby is business savvy and has been fundamental in developing their local network and running the business side of the company.
Film craft – the business of show
The team is already in early preproduction for a feature film, which has been scripted by Ian, but in the meantime, while they are working hard to secure funding, they have also introduced a corporate offering. Dean outlines their strategy: “Many companies are looking for something different when it comes to teambuilding. We have developed a unique teambuilding experience, where members of the company come together to make a film. They develop the script, then go on to film it too. People take different roles either behind or in front of the camera.”
Ruby adds: “Filmmaking picks up on so many disciplines which are crucial to a successful business – from time management and delegation, through to creativity and confidence. Plus, at the end of the teambuilding, they have an Oscar-style premiere of their own, which we host. The companies we have done this with have got a lot out of it, both from a personal and businessbenefits perspective.”

Grassroots filmmaking
Dean continues: “We have also had an incredible opportunity to work with young people from Caia Park, to make a film which was showcased at FOCUS Wales in May. The project was a collaboration with Caia Park Partnership. It is so important that there is the chance for young people to discover the industry and the range of roles that are available outside of the acting.”

Ruby added: “It has been an amazingly powerful and inspiring project and one
we are really proud to have set-up. The young people involved have shown so much enthusiasm and talent, it is absolutely humbling. A lot of people have the perception that filmmaking is elitist. We want to show people that it isn’t. Film studios require so many different trades and skilled workers. We want to open up the industry to people that haven’t previously considered it as an option. And, with our local roots, we want to bring those opportunities to Wrexham.”
On the world stage
Minera Studios Cymru is not just a company, it’s a movement. It aims to open up cinematic pathways. The network is here, the team now want to grow local talent and develop a studio that celebrates the local community but with a global outreach. At its heart, the project is about recognising talent and
nurturing that talent to find opportunities and careers. With the focus on the city thanks to what’s happened with Wrexham AFC and the Disney+ show Welcome to Wrexham, there is a sense that the area has the opportunity to reveal its potential on a world stage. The industry really is for everyone and it will be great to offer chances to people who may not have thought of a career in the film business, be it in front of the camera, or behind the scenes.
Ian continued: “Combined, we have over 90 years experience working in the film industry and together, we have the passion, knowledge and expertise to bring the film industry to North East Wales, but to make this happen, we are keen to work with local businesses, people and organisations to turn our dream into Wrexham’s reality.”

Dean Fagan has had a varied career across TV, film and video games. He recently appeared as a gladiator in Ridley Scott’s Roman epic Gladiator II (2024), marking his entry into Hollywood blockbusters. He’s perhaps best known for playing mechanic Luke Britton in Coronation Street from 2014-18, and also for the prison drama Time (2021), written by Jimmy McGovern.

Ian Puleston-Davies is a BAFTAnominated writer/director and an actor with more than 50 years of experience. His roles as villains in Netflix's Marcella and Sky Atlantic's Tin Star have cemented his professional standing in the United States and Canada. On Thursday 20 March we were honoured to be joined by multimillion-best-selling author, Simon McCleave for our VOX networking at The Townhouse in Chester. Attendees had the opportunity to network in the lovely outside ‘Secret Garden’ of the hotel, based on Lower Bridge Street, on what was a beautiful, warm Spring evening (an early taste of what this Summer had in store – fingers crossed).

Recently, we attended the VOX networking event at Hotel Wrexham. As this was our first visit, we weren't sure what to expect, but from the moment we walked in the atmosphere was energetic, people were engaging with one another and there was a real buzz in the room.
After making a few introductions, we were asked to sit for a short presentation from Andy Williams –former Mayor of Wrexham and fulltime firefighter. Andy shared the story of his Buddi – his best four-legged friend and the much-loved therapy dog, who helped so many during their time of need. Buddi visited hospitals such as the Maelor, wards such as intensive care, A&E and the children's ward, as well as Nightingale House, where he would sit with patients and comfort those who needed it most at their most challenging times.
Andy is also a volunteer rider with the Blood Bikes Wales, which consists of 50 volunteer riders who ensure that the service is accessible 24/7, 365 days of the year. As well as collecting samples from the phlebotomy departments of community hospitals and delivering them to labs, the team also aids in distributing breast milk to new mothers who are unable to produce milk themselves, due to various health conditions. Shockingly – and to the surprise of a lot of people I spoke with –this service relies solely on volunteers and donations, no funding from the NHS at all.
Now, if that wasn’t all incredible enough, Andy is also raising money to equip all fire engines in the region with Smokey Paws kit – pet resuscitation apparatus that enable crews to help even more animals in life-or-death

Over the past two and a half years, the crews in Wrexham have used the kit around on multiple occasions, allowing them to successfully save the lives of

What do streaming recommendations, robotic arms and local businesses have in common? At Highstream’s recent AI Discussion Group for local business leaders, held at the Pant-yr-Ochain, Gresford, we explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) – once the domain of science fiction – is now a practical, disruptive and essential tool for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. This wasn’t a lecture. It was a lively, peer-led exchange grounded in real-world challenges, curious minds and a shared goal: staying competitive in a rapidly evolving business environment.
Understanding the AI landscape
We opened the session by framing what ‘AI’ really means. The group discussed the foundational technologies— Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Computer Vision—and how these underpin familiar tools like ChatGPT, recommendation systems and virtual assistants. These aren’t distant Silicon Valley inventions anymore; they’re in our pockets, on our websites and increasingly, on our shop floors.

We explored AI’s evolution — from Alan Turing’s early ideas in the 1940s to the boom-and-bust cycles of AI optimism through the twentieth century, and now to a period of sustained advancement, thanks to cloud computing, big data and billions in public and private investment. The consensus? AI is no longer ‘emerging’. It has emerged.
AI in action: When machines build machines
One of the most fascinating detours in
the discussion focused on automation in modern manufacturing – particularly in the automotive sector. We looked at real examples of robots assembling robotic components, a kind of industrial recursion that underscores how far automation has come. The phrase ‘robots building robots’ caught the room’s attention, acting as both a symbol of progress and a challenge to traditional labour models.
These systems, powered by AI and robotics, are not only streamlining production lines, but also generating new business models and capabilities. The question is no longer “Can AI do it?” but “Can we afford not to?”
SMEs at a crossroads: agentic AI and the competitive edge
The group then turned its attention to Agentic AI – AI systems trained for specific tasks that can act autonomously or in partnership with humans. These are already helping businesses automate routine tasks, analyse customer behaviour and even assist in decision-making.
For SMEs, the implications are significant. With limited staff and squeezed margins, businesses must work smarter, not just harder.

At the same time, the environmental impact of the power and mineral requirements of vast-scale AI training and the concentration of power in a handful of tech giants are raising broader societal questions that even small businesses need to be aware of.
A local call to action
Despite the challenges, the mood in the room was optimistic. AI is not just a threat to be managed – it’s an
opportunity to be seized. Our group identified a clear next step: meet regularly, share practical tools and create a local peer network focused on actionable innovation, not just theory. SMEs don’t need to wait for perfect AI strategies. They can start now –by experimenting, upskilling and collaborating.
As AI reshapes the landscape, SMEs in our region have a choice: remain reactive or get ahead. Those who lean in early – who get curious, get talking and get building – will be the ones who not only survive, but thrive. The stunning Bolesworth Castle was built in 1829 and is the centrepiece of the Bolesworth Estate, which covers 6,500 acres of ground. It is also home to over 150 businesses. The estate is made up of commercial and residential properties, and a number of dairy farms. It encompasses numerous Cheshire landmarks, including The Ice Cream Farm, its neighbouring Beachdean Dairies – another leading ice cream producer – Tattenhall Marina and the award-winning Pheasant Inn in Burwardsley.
Nina Barbour is the current custodian of the estate, as well as its managing director. She has worked hard to bring the estate into the twenty-first century. After her father Antony passed away in 2007, her mother ran the estate until 2014, when Nina took over. As we approach the start of Bolesworth International 2025 – the world-class showjumping event presented by Al Shira’aa, which takes place between 27 June and 6 July 2025 – Nina talked to us about the estate, the upcoming event and her plans for the future.
Time to rethink
“Anthony, my father, was the adopted son of Richard Barbour. He took over running the estate in 1986 and was very forward thinking – he understood the need for diversification. However, the management structure simply wasn’t there and from taking over, I had to find a way to make it work. Covid was a big turning point for me. It provided the space and time to rethink how the estate was run and make some fundamental changes. I also took on an incredibly talented financial director, Andy Paling. Andy then introduced me to Gaurav Batra, who had spent significant parts of his career in corporate finance working closely with the management at both Virgin and also the Bibby Group. As the Estate’s chair and the person who runs the property side of the business – Gaurav has been instrumental to the growth
of the company. Between us, we have the experience to identify and implement a pipeline of exciting business opportunities.”
“It has been an evolution – identifying the right solution, getting the right team in place and ensuring that our property portfolio consisted of compliant and well-managed properties. With the changes that have affected companies since Covid, we are also looking at restructuring the property portfolio and pursuing a number of new development opportunities. As companies have had to change their business models, so have we.”
Incredible horsepower on display Nina is a passionate equestrian, so Bolesworth International is an important date in her diary.
“I think you would say I am an experienced amateur. I love the equestrian world, and I am so excited to be able to host this flagship event on my land. We have developed it to become a world-class event, which brings in 750 horses to compete each year – and all the people associated with them. When you think that showjumping horses can reach a value of £10-15m, and each horse could easily be worth six figures, it gives you some idea of the type of people involved with the event, and what goes into its organisation.

“As well as the International competition, the corporate hospitality side of Bolesworth International has developed considerably and is very important to the overall event too. While Bolesworth International is the flagship equestrian event for Bolesworth Estate, it is by no means the only event taking place this Summer. “We look to work with companies that have a similar ethos to us. We want to host premium level events that align with the values of the Estate. As such, we are excited to welcome Escape Records’ Together Again festival in July (25 – 27 July). This three-day camping and music festival plans to bring Ibiza vibes to Cheshire and we are delighted at how this has landed.”
Creating a destination
Bolesworth Estate is also investing in holiday accommodation, including a new self-catering property being developed in the estate’s Liongate: “It is going to be different. We are experimenting with bold and modern
colours and furnishings – gold not silver, but with the main focus being on comfort. We are not interested in style over substance. Both elements need to work together, so that our guests are cosy, but in luxurious surroundings. It’s all about creating an experience that people will want to repeat.”
The Estate also has plans to take the old cookery school in Harthill and turn it into a pub with potentially eight-to-10 bedrooms. Planning has now gone through, and so the Estate is now seeking to work with a strong brand to develop and run it. Developing the Estate’s property portfolio can be tricky. The old Cheshire Candle Workshop is also part of Bolesworth Estate. “We still need to work out what to do with that. It won’t be another leisure facility. It is more likely that we will develop the land for high-end residential properties.”
Focus on the location
Nina is aware that it’s a privilege for her to be managing such an important and picturesque corner of England: “Bolesworth Castle is in such an incredible location, nestled in the heart of Cheshire’s rolling countryside – and Cheshire is such a beautiful part of the world. I know I am very lucky to be the custodian of all of this. I also want to enable the stunning grounds to be enjoyed by more people. It’s all about achieving the right balance. For example, with acres of diverse landscapes, Bolesworth offers a versatile range of filming locations, perfect for feature films, TV dramas, commercials and photoshoots.”
Combining natural beauty, historic charm and modern facilities, the estate has the potential to provide production companies with a seamless and successful production experience. Positioned just 45 minutes from Liverpool and under an hour from Manchester, this also means that the location is within easy reach for production companies and filmmakers:
“We have had various shoots on-site already, including an episode of ‘Grace’s Amazing Machines’.”
On course for new challenges
Horses are never far from Nina’s thoughts and conversation soon returns to the equestrian side of her life. Nina explains that she has an exciting challenge coming up this Summer. At the end of July, she will be taking part in her first horse race. “It’s a five and a half-furlong flat race, which is being run for charity.”
Nina is raising money for Project Lehar, which is run by the Aga Khan Foundation, with support from King’s Trust International. It offers vocational training, entrepreneurship and life skills courses for girls and young women from low-income backgrounds in India. It also supports girls who left school early, to complete their education.
“The race takes place on 31 July at Goodwood and Michael Owen, who has a racing stable near Malpas, has been kind enough to let me ride one of his Racing Club horses, ‘He’s a Gentleman’. He is also letting me ride out from his Manor House Stables and start to build some experience. Racing as opposed to competing requires a very different riding technique and while there are some skills that can be transferred, such as balance and strength, a lot of it is like learning to ride all over again.”
With so much going on, Nina sees the Estate as very much part of the fabric of Cheshire life. Under her management, and with expert advice from a team of experts in all fields, Bolesworth continues to flourish and grow.
“Bolesworth is evolving all the time and adapting brings both challenges and opportunities. Our biggest challenge is managing an historic estate in a digital age. We’re strengthening what it does well, exploring where the next adventure lies.”

When you are researching and writing about a subject, it’s always important to cite where your sources are from. But with so many sources available on the internet, how can you tell which are reliable and which are pure fiction? It’s also important to make sure that when you’re using sources that you don’t plagiarise other people’s work. In art and culture, there’s a fine line between homage and theft, but when it comes to writing for business – the promotion of services or products, for instance – we find it’s vital to get to know our clients and subjects, so we can write from experience rather than research.
Virtually instant
Before the internet and the digital age, reference would have to be made to where information originated from. This would involve leafing through volumes, citing sources, often reading whole books to find specific pieces of information. Now people type a word or phrase into Google (or any other search engine) and can peruse the information on any given subject virtually instantly. The leap from novice to expert is instantaneous, but it is still good practice to cite sources.
In terms of literary sources, many books have been digitalised as searchable archives online, which can be useful if you’re seeking specific data. Some books don’t even exist as printed words anymore, but as spoken word audio books, and many new articles appear in formats such as podcasts or webinars, which will never become ‘physical’ text. You can still quote from them however and they are often vital sources, especially for new thinking and research.
An encyclopaedic website such as Wikipedia is a great resource for pretty
much any topic, but it is usermoderated and can be edited and updated by anyone. As a resource it’s both invaluable and unreliable – there are many cases where resources and biographies have been tampered with to include information that is misleading. This is particularly true of anything with religious or political connotations, where views are strong and viewpoints are often conflicting. But Wikipedia is rich in information and often superb on many aspects, such as geographical locations and industrial processes, which can be used to add background detail and facts to writing that may not be freely available elsewhere.
Fact or fiction
If you slavishly follow your sources’ approach and repeat too closely existing information or viewpoints on a subject, then it will be easy to see what you have based the information on. As a result, you will be called out for plagiarism. You must triangulate facts between reputable sources, to distinguish the fact from the fiction. You should also not lazily copy other people’s work and pass it off as your

own. There is nothing wrong with reading and digesting information, and reworking it into something new, written from your own perspective, in your own personal style.
However, there’s no substitute for writing from experience – it’s important to get to know clients and subjects, so you can write from experience rather than research. The more knowledge you accrue, the broader range of subjects you can write about with assurance. It’s much more difficult to check or determine if work is being plagiarised nowadays, as the internet is so vast. So many sources are available
online and new articles and content on every subject are being generated every hour of every day. It’s a selfperpetuating, ever-evolving stream of content that can never fully be policed or fact-checked.
Choose carefully where and how you source your information – official technology sites and governmental sites are usually a reliable and searchable resource on many subjects regarding social and economic issues and legislation, for example. To avoid any kind of plagiarism, the best approach is to carry out any research using more than one source and to ensure that you
don’t repeat too closely phraseology and information that is already out there. Put your stamp it.
Of course, the more original and imaginative your take on a subject can be, the more engaging, interesting and enlightening your writing will be for the reader.

Storyhouse, Chester’s iconic cultural hub, has taken a significant stride towards a greener future, by partnering with local specialists DomElec Electrical & Solar to install a major solar panel system. This ambitious project underscores Storyhouse's commitment to environmental responsibility and is set to deliver substantial financial and ecological benefits, offering an inspiring blueprint for businesses across Chester and Wrexham.
A bustling centre for arts, culture and community, Storyhouse is by its very nature an energy-intensive operation. Housing a theatre, library, cinema and busy café – and open seven days a week – its energy demands are considerable. However, this vibrant institution is now harnessing the power of the sun to pave its way to Net Zero.
The Drive for a Sustainable Future
For Storyhouse, the journey to solar power was primarily ignited by a deepseated commitment to sustainability.
Andy Patterson, Head of Technical & Estates at Storyhouse, explains the core motivation: “The main driving force for us first looking into the idea of solar was in response to our desire to be more sustainable and to lessen our impact on the climate.” This vision is integral to their business planning, which actively seeks to reduce both energy consumption and carbon output.
While environmental stewardship was the principal catalyst, the financial advantages quickly became apparent. “Looking into solar, it became clear quickly that it also made a massive amount of sense financially too,” Patterson notes. “The financial positives for us are a (very) happy secondary benefit!”

Powering up: the project details The comprehensive solar installation, representing an investment of £100k+, was meticulously planned and executed by DomElec Electrical & Solar. The system features 209 high-efficiency Longi commercial solar panels, strategically placed across three main roof sections. These panels boast a significant PV Generator Output of 110.77 kWp.
A key aspect of the design is the predominantly east-west (with some south-facing) orientation of the panels, angled at 10 degrees. This configuration ensures a smooth and consistent generation of power throughout the day. Crucially, the panels are mounted on a ballasted frame system. This innovative approach avoids any penetration of the roof structure,
preserving the integrity of the ‘beautiful building’, a point of pride for the Storyhouse team. A separate structural survey confirmed the suitability of this method, ensuring the building's longterm protection.
The installation logistics were also carefully considered. To minimise disruption to the local community and adhere to road management guidance, the panels were craned into position on a Sunday from Hunter Street, a process estimated to take around five hours. Throughout the installation, DomElec adhered strictly to weight guidance and safety protocols.
Reaping the rewards: impact and benefits
The impact of this solar initiative is projected to be transformative.

The system is expected to generate an impressive 103,602 kWh of clean energy annually. This directly translates into significant financial savings, with a projected first-year saving of £26,000. The system is anticipated to pay for itself within a remarkably short 3.8 years. Over a 24-year assessment period, the accrued cash flow, or cash balance, is forecasted to reach over a £1million.
These savings are not just numbers on a spreadsheet. They represent a vital boost to Storyhouse’s operational resilience. Patterson elaborates:
“Making the savings with the solar array will help to ensure that we are operating as financially efficiently as we can, ensuring a sustainable operation for years to come.” In a challenging financial climate for arts institutions, these efficiencies will help safeguard Storyhouse’s diverse offerings to the community.
Beyond the financial gains, the environmental benefits are equally compelling. The solar installation will reduce Storyhouse’s CO2 emissions by
an estimated 48,662 kg per year –a tangible contribution to a healthier planet.

Andy Patterson Head of Technical & Estates praises their approach: “Domelec offered us a really clear, well thought out proposal from the off and gave us the confidence that they would be able to deliver what they promised us. Tennis stars will be swapping Wimbledon for Wrexham, when they head to North Wales to compete in a prestigious international event this October. The Lexus Wrexham Open –the biggest women’s tennis tournament in the UK this year outside the grass court season – will be played at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre between 19-26 October.
A 600-seat capacity arena will be constructed around the main indoor show court at the Plas Coch Road venue, to allow spectators to enjoy watching world-class tennis. Dave Courteen, the event promoter, has worked closely with the Lawn Tennis Association to bring the tournament, previously held in Shrewsbury, to Wrexham for the first time.
Bringing their ‘A’ game
Dave explained: “This will be the biggest ever tennis tournament in North Wales and the largest women’s tennis event in Wales since the Rover Championships in Cardiff in 1996. Some of the players due to compete in Wrexham will be ranked in the world’s top 100. Many of them will have played at Wimbledon three months earlier, as well as at the US Open just six weeks before arriving in the city.

eight months after winning this equivalent event at Shrewsbury, so that’s an illustration of the profile this tournament enjoys and the quality of players it attracts. Dave added: “We know Wrexham is famous for its football club, so we want this event to be another exciting way of celebrating just what a great city Wrexham is. We are working closely with Tennis Wales, Wrexham Council and the Welsh Government, as well as the trustees of the Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre, which has recently benefitted from an impressive refurbishment. We want the tournament, which will be livestreamed to a global audience, to showcase all that’s wonderful about Wrexham.”

The Lexus Wrexham Open – part of the ITF World Tennis Tour – is set to bring over £400,000 of business to the Wrexham area, a significant boost for the area’s economic growth. The tournament’s official launch was held in April, at the city’s Ramada Plaza hotel, with guests, including sponsors from the local business community, learning more about the many ways they can get involved.
“This will be a really exciting event for Wrexham and Wales,” Dave continued. “It was fantastic to see so many people at the launch and nice to hear just how much they are looking forward to welcoming the tournament to North Wales for the first time. As well as the tennis, we want the whole event to have a festival feel to it and there will a number of high-profile events to engage the local business community. Scaling up a business marks the transition from the start-up phase to a growth-focused enterprise. Growing a business focuses on increasing its revenue and market share in a way that achieves greater profitability.
1. Have a clear strategy
A clear strategic plan is fundamental for any business scaling up. Outline clear objectives – often this is for the owners to sell or exit in some other way that realises the value of their business –identify target markets and establish measurable goals. The strategy should include financial projections, marketing strategies and operational improvements. It is also important to review and adjust the strategy, in order to adapt to changing market conditions and business needs.
2. Secure appropriate funding
A key concern for businesses when looking to scale up is ensuring that they can secure the funding they need to

support their strategy. Owners need to evaluate the funding options, to determine the best fit for their needs. Each funding source will have its own set of requirements and implications for the business.
Irrespective of the financing chosen, a business must ensure it has regular cashflow forecasting, to help anticipate any potential shortfalls and ensure that it has the funds available to keep operations running smoothly during the expansion period.
Equity financing:
Equity financing is a method of raising capital for a company by selling shares of the company to investors. Investors
will receive a proportion of the future profits and a return on any future sale, and can include family and friends, angel investors, venture capitalists or private equity firms.
Debt financing:
Debt financing involves borrowing funds that must be repaid with interest. It comes in various forms, including business loans, lines of credit, invoice financing (lending that lets you borrow cash against your unpaid invoices) and peer-to-peer lending. Unlike equity financing, debt financing does not dilute the business ownership; however it requires regular repayments, which can strain cash flow, if not managed properly.
3. Scale up by acquisition
More rapid scale up can be achieved by acquiring another business in the same sector, to increase market share. Alternatively, acquisitions in a different or complimentary sector can strengthen a business, by expanding into an alternative market. Proper legal and tax advice on the structure of any acquisition should be sought and proper due diligence carried out.
4. Get your house in order
Ensure any agreements between partners or shareholders are robust, that key contracts with manufacturers, suppliers and customers are in place, and that any valuable intellectual property (logo, brand name etc) is registered and protected where possible. Check that any necessary consents and insurance policies are in place and that title to any property of the business is in order, or that any necessary leases or licences are properly documented.
5. Embrace technology
As a business expands and attracts a larger customer base, its technology infrastructure will need to be able to keep up. Scaling up will involve expanding and optimising IT infrastructure and systems to support increasing business demands. CRM, automation and cloud tools can be used to boost productivity.

Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru (National Eisteddfod of Wales) is Europe’s largest cultural event and will be heading to Wrexham this summer! The festival is a vibrant celebration of the rich culture and heritage of 'Cymru' (Wales) and 'Cymraeg' (the Welsh language). It will bring culture and creativity to the 'Maes' (festival site) in Is-y-coed, a village just five miles from Wexham's city centre. Friday 8 March 2025 was International Women’s Day (IWD). Across the country, scores of events took place celebrating women and highlighting this year’s campaign theme of ‘Accelerate Action’. In Chester, the Lord Mayor, Cllr Razia Daniels hosted a special gathering at Storyhouse to mark the event. With a selection of powerful women speakers, the morning provided the opportunity for local women to come together and share their stories. As Cllr Daniels hands over the mantle to the next Lord Mayor, Cllr Sherin Akhtar, we had the opportunity to find out why this was important to her and what her other priorities have been during her year in office.
A second time in post Cllr Daniels explains: “It has been a truly incredible year for me and a huge honour to once again represent Chester as Lord Mayor, having previously served in the role in 2017/18. I am truly humbled to have been given this second opportunity.
“Over the past 12 months, I have been incredibly busy, and it has been a privilege to attend so many events— both locally and internationally—in my official capacity. The theme of my year in office has been ‘Community Spirit and Volunteers,’ It is so important to celebrate achievements of our community, saying thank you, and highlighting the amazing contributions people make every day.
Chester has a fantastic community spirit, and I’ve been proud to celebrate and support it throughout my time in office.”
The Lord Mayor’s duties and visits have included many highlights, including visiting Chester Zoo on Earth Day to see the 19,000 trees which were recently planted at the Zoo and meeting local Paralympian gold medallist Amy Truesdale, who won a Para-Taekwondo medal, and Olympic rower Harry Brightmore. She has also taken part in events such as MidSummer Watch and lit Chester’s Beacon of Peace, accompanied by Matt Baker and his local choirs, to celebrate and commemorate the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day, acknowledging those
working in the UK Armed Forces. As Lord Mayor, she is also the Admiral of the Dee and has had official duties to perform there too, including an annual inspection of the River Dee.
From grassroots to world stage “A great deal of my time this year has been dedicated to attending events, visits, and engagements across the city and beyond. I have carried out well over 280 visits during my term, beginning and ending with the Mayor-making ceremonies in May. These have ranged from small, grassroots community events to highprofile occasions, including the honour of representing Chester at the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Avranches, Normandy in France.

Why International Women’s Day?
“It is important to mark International Women’s Day and it was amazing to be able to celebrate it in the role of Lord Mayor. We had over 135 women attend our event, from a wide cross-section including local businesses and local education, community groups and faith groups, through to representatives from the military and local government. Many of our guests had truly gone above and beyond for their local communities.
“Our aim was to inspire our guests to support and encourage the next generation, to celebrate their individual successes and achievements, and also to raise awareness of the challenges women face today. We wanted to provide a platform for attendees to share their journeys. Our speakers on the morning have all been on their own personal journey to achieve great things. Providing them with an opportunity to tell their stories helps to celebrate their successes and hopefully provide inspiration and hope to others. We were incredibly fortunate to have a room full of incredible women at the event – and each one of them had their own story to tell.”
Cllr Razia Daniels Razia, was born in Dodoma, Tanzania, East Africa, and has called Chester home since her marriage to Stephen Daniels in 1985. She is a Gemmologist and a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain. She was first elected as a councillor for Handbridge and St Mary’s Ward in 2006. She now represents the Handbridge Park Ward, which includes Handbridge, Westminster Park, Curzon Park and Kings Moat Garden Village. Beyond her councillor duties, Razia is actively engaged as a Governor of City of Chester University, highlighting her commitment to education and community development. She also serves as a member of the Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, further reinforcing her dedication to public safety.

What is cerebral palsy?
Cerebral palsy is the most common motor disability of childhood, affecting about one in 400 children in the UK. It causes challenges and barriers in daily life, which can range from struggling to walk, to getting dressed, or feeding independently.
What does Stick ‘n’ Step do?
• Established over 21 years ago, Stick ‘n’ Step provides free weekly conductive education sessions to children and young people with cerebral palsy up to the age of 25, allowing them to gain the skills they need to live more independent lives
• The charity’s support improves mobility, independence and boosts self-confidence, enabling every child to reach their personal potential
• Receiving no statutory funding, the charity has to raise the £750,000 required to deliver its services to over 100 families (from across North West England and North Wales) each year at its Cheshire centre in Runcorn (which opened in 2017) and its older centre in Wallasey
• Stick ‘n’ Step supports the whole family. Regular attendance at the centres means that parents and extended family have the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and they benefit from regular respite time, whilst their children develop in the classroom.

Conductive education is based on a ‘simple’ concept of human potential – meaning that everyone has the capability to learn and develop, irrespective of their starting point.
Children and young people with disabilities are often assessed for what they ‘cannot’ do, rather than for the potential they have. Conductors are specialists that are trained to observe this potential in a child, to nurture their development and devise structured programmes to enable success. Conductive education combines education, psychology and medical science, and considers all aspects of the person simultaneously.
Conductive education is about active learning. Stick ‘n’ Step sessions incorporate play and music into structured routines, to develop functional skills. Children and young people are motivated by working alongside their peers in a positive environment and are empowered to achieve realistic goals that are specific and relevant to them.
At Stick ‘n’ Step, children work towards realistic personalised goals, to become more mobile and learn key life skills, including dressing, selffeeding, transferring from a wheelchair to a chair/sofa, and fine motor skills, like picking up objects and using a pen.
Early intervention when children are still babies has been shown to increase the chance of improving their mobility as they grow older. Stick ‘n’ Step runs an early intervention programme, offering Conductive Education services to babies from six months of age, whose parents may be concerned about their physical development – for example, not reaching their expected milestones.

The Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration (WPAC) and Financial Justice Working Group (FJWG) recently hosted an impactful Cost of Living Summit. The collaboration funded by the Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales, brought together a diverse array of community groups, power holders and decision-makers, to listen to the lived experiences of those affected by the cost of living and poverty in Wrexham, and the issues that are affecting communities on a daily basis.
The most recent defendant to go before the ‘Jail & Bail’ jury was Kenneymoore director, Tim Kenney, raising over £2000 for Hospice of the Good Shepherd.
Hospice of the Good Shepherd’s ‘Jail & Bail’ offers the chance for staff of all businesses to nominate their colleagues to stand trial in the Hospice Courtroom, all to help raise funds for the Hospice, but also make them face the Hospice legal teams and fearsome Hospice judge!
Colleagues can be nominated for all sort of crimes, such as cooking fish in the office microwave on their lunch or telling everyone that playing golf was ‘important work’ and then spending their days in the sunshine playing a round of golf while their team worked hard in the office!
Once nominated the members of staff will be served with a court summons in their office and will stand trial at Chester Town Hall courtroom in front of their colleagues, with some even giving evidence in the witness box to make sure their sentence is hefty.
When – we mean if – found guilty, then the guilty will be led to the depths of the Town Hall Prison cells, where they need to raise their Bail for freedom, no bail.... no freedom from the haunted prison cells!
Over 100 people attended the fundraiser, which was organised by the Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting in association with Hotel Wrexham, and took an in-depth look at the career of one of the UK small screen’s most famous stars. Fans packed the venue for an exclusive Q&A with Les, which documented the highs and lows of his career spanning 50 years.
“We were extremely proud to partner with the prestigious Wrexham Academy of Screen Acting for what was an incredible event that has raised much needed funds for a critical local service. It was a fantastic evening, thoroughly entertaining from the outset and packed with laughs – just like Les’s career!” said Steven Hesketh, co-owner of Hotel Wrexham.
The event will see much needed funds go to Nightingale House Hospice, to help provide specialist palliative care services for those with life-limiting illnesses.
Magellan Aerospace in Wrexham presented a cheque for £1,000 to the Wales Council for Deaf People (WCDP). This donation was made possible through the collective efforts of its team, which organised an onsite raffle featuring some incredible prizes. The event not only brought its community together, but it underscored the company’s commitment to supporting vital causes.
WCDP plays a crucial role in advocating and providing resources for deaf individuals in Wales, and Magellan Aerospace is honoured to contribute to its mission.
For over 10 years, Chester-based charity, SPACE has been supporting children from the Northwest of England and North Wales. The charity currently supports over 600 children, nearly 100 of those travel from North Wales to Chester on a regular basis.
Offering family play sessions, parent carer support, sibling support groups and much more, the children that attend SPACE are able to enjoy a safe, welcoming and fully-accessible environment, which allows these children to engage in meaningful play, socialise with others, build independence, and experience a sense of belonging.
It supports children with a range of abilities, including physical disabilities, complex health needs, sensory impairments, autism, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Due to these challenges, many of them experience social isolation and exclusion, as there is often a lack of accessible and inclusive play opportunities available in the wider community.
SPACE supports their mental health and emotional wellbeing, while also providing families with much-needed respite and connection. It helps to relieve the isolation that is so often experienced by children with additional needs and their families. Along with the children themselves, SPACE also supports parents, carers and siblings, by giving them muchneeded access to information, support and guidance.

Two thousand new babies are delivered every year at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with over 50% of deliveries requiring the assistance of an anaesthetist. The anaesthesia service in the maternity department was until recently partly-dependent on the availability and loan of equipment from another part of the hospital to support their work. An ultrasound machine for anaesthetic use was urgently needed in the Maternity department at the Countess of Chester Hospital, to streamline patient care and improve safety.
The Countess Charity needed funds for this and contacted the Ursula Keyes Trust. This is a long-standing supporter of the charity, having funded the Ursula Keyes Breast Care Centre at the hospital, opened in May 2003, and for other medical equipment donated since. The Trust was happy to help and donated the full funds required – over £30,000. Trustees were able to see the machine in action recently at the maternity unit and wish staff well, following a demonstration of the machine’s advanced features.
Having their own designated ultrasound machine now allows for timely and safer identification of spine anatomy prior to epidural or spinal insertion, for insertion of peripheral intravenous, arterial and central venous lines in critical and unwell patients, and for nerve blocks for analgesia. Ultimately, the equipment will improve patient safety and contribute towards greater patient satisfaction with the service.
The Townhouse Chester is proud to announce a heart-led partnership with Soul Kitchen Chester, a 100% volunteerrun charity committed to supporting individuals affected by homelessness, food poverty, and social isolation. Together, they are launching The Sunset Café – a six-week pilot project designed to offer real-life hospitality experience to people looking to rebuild their lives.
The pilot started at the end of May and the Sunset Café will operate every Friday from 11:00am to 3:00pm at The Townhouse Chester. Run in collaboration with Soul Kitchen Chester’s Soul in a Bowl team, the café will be open to the public, serving simple but beautifully made food, including sandwiches, jacket potatoes, sausage rolls, cakes and freshly brewed drinks. Guests can expect a warm welcome and a feelgood atmosphere, with every visit directly supporting the development and confidence of individuals striving to re-enter the workforce.
The initiative offers hands-on training in all areas of hospitality – from food preparation and kitchen skills, to table service and customer interaction. Participants will work alongside experienced hospitality professionals from The Townhouse team, gaining practical experience and building skills they can carry into future employment.

Founded in 2015, ‘Soul Kitchen Chester’ is entirely run by volunteers. The charity runs a weekly drop-in every Saturday evening at Campbell Hall, where guests are offered hot meals, clothing and compassionate support. Their Soul in a Bowl cookery sessions provide not only cooking skills but a path toward confidence, qualifications like Level 2 Food Hygiene and a sense of purpose.
P&A Group was pleased to sponsor the trophies for the Nightingale House Hospice 5k and 10k Run held at Alyn Waters on Saturday 5 April. The event was a huge success, welcoming runners of all abilities to enjoy a scenic multiterrain course, while raising vital funds for the hospice’s patient care services.
Elise Jackson, Events and Campaigns Manager at Nightingale House Hospice, commented: “The Alyn Waters 5k and 10k Run is more than just a run. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and make a real difference.”
Steve Morgan, Chairman of P&A Group, attended the event and presented 12 trophies to the winning participants, alongside Alison Peters from GHP Legal, who sponsored and presented the medals. GHP Legal Solicitors of Wrexham, Oswestry, and Llangollen is a multi-disciplinary law practice serving a client base stretching across more than 10 counties. Adding a fun and festive touch to the day, the new Nightingale House mascot was on hand to cheer on runners and supporters alike.
University of Chester students have raised £2,400 for charity after organising two fun-filled events in the city. The two teams of Events Management students are delighted with the success of their events and to be able to support each of their chosen charities. The Beyond Events team ran the ‘I Do or Do I?’ murder mystery escape room challenge, in aid of Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, at the Music Hall Tap in Chester, while the Eventopia team hosted a night of ‘Bubbles and Bingo’ at Chester Racecourse, to raise money for Liverpool-based charity, Love Jasmine. The murder mystery challenge generated £1,030 for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and the evening of ‘Bubbles and Bingo’ raised £1,370 for Love Jasmine. The teams, made up of four students who all study at the University’s Business School, also aimed to raise awareness of the charities with the events, held earlier this year.
Carrianne Wallace, Senior Lecturer in Marketing and Professional Development at the University of Chester, added: “I am very proud of the hard work and commitment that all the Events Management students have demonstrated in planning and staging their fundraising events. The Events Management programme is designed to allow students to gain real world experience, as well as contribute to the local community through their active citizenship, reflective of the substantial monies raised for local charities.”
The Sight Loss Information Line is a Lottery-funded project in partnership with Vision Support, NHS England, Cheshire West & Chester Council, East Cheshire Eye Society, and Cheshire East Council. The Sight Loss Information Line is a first point of contact for individuals who live within Cheshire who have a vision impairment and require tailor-made signposting and support. The Sight Loss Information Line is there to provide information, support and guidance at a time when those who want it, need it most. Individuals can be signposted to a breadth of support services within Vision Support and externally to other vital services, including person-centred counselling, white cane and mobility training, benefits advice and support, companionship through home visiting, creative and active social groups, and tech support.

The charity WeMindTheGap is delighted to announce that it has been awarded funding over the next five years from The National Lottery Community Fund. The generous funding will help the charity to continue its important work supporting young people in the North West of England and North Wales, who have fallen through the gaps and who are not in employment, education or training, to develop life skills that many take for granted, preparing them for the world of work and creating a sense of belonging.
The £4.9 million funding over five years will sustain and grow WeMindTheGap programmes, supporting the charity’s ambition to reach over 15,000 young people at a cost of £12 million. This funding will enable the creation of a supportive network for each ‘Graduate Gappie’, connecting individuals from diverse backgrounds, bridging the gap between the online and offline worlds, and creating a sense of belonging in their community. This continuous support will empower underserved young people who are not in education, employment or training, by fostering personal and professional growth, and resilience. Ultimately, the programmes aim to equip future generations with the skills and support necessary to engage with education, enter the workplace, live independently and contribute to their local economy and community.
Founded in 2014 by Rachel Clacher, co-founder of Moneypenny, WeMindTheGap initially provided a unique sixmonth paid traineeship, followed by further support to help young people transition into work or education. Since 2014, the charity has expanded its offering and now offers five different programmes to meet the differing needs of young people. Some are delivered virtually as a first step and suited to those who may not yet be ready for the world of work. The charity continues to support its ‘Graduate Gappies’ through an ever-growing but vital Alumni programme, with a focus on maintaining relationships, peer-to-peer support and continued progression.
West Cheshire & North Wales (WCNW) Chamber of Commerce is one of only 51 accredited Chambers in the UK. With over 620 member companies, the Chamber covers seven councils and 13 MPs – and as the only cross-border Chamber in the world, it deals with two governments, the UK and Wales. In addition to that, East Cheshire Chamber of Commerce is affiliated to it too, meaning the two Chambers work closely together and collaborate on events to support businesses across the regions.
As a membership organisation, its first priority is to its members. Since the Chamber’s new CEO, Sarah Bailey, started heading up the organisation in February 2024, the Chamber has developed an even stronger voice for businesses across the area. Sarah explains: “I have been involved with the Chamber for over 10 years and have sat on the board since 2019. When Debbie Bryce (the former CEO) stepped down, it was an opportunity too good to miss. She had successfully led the Chamber for many years and I wanted to build on this by adding even more value to the membership offer whilst increasing awareness of our policy and lobbying efforts that benefit the wider business community.”
More than networking Sarah has a corporate background, having been a director of business banking for NatWest before starting her new position. “Since my appointment, we have shifted some of our focus more into the Policy area. This is somewhere where we have real influence and can make a difference to our members. The networking side of the organisation is still strong and we are bringing in new events to continue to keep our offering fresh, but there are three distinct areas of operation –membership, international trade and lobbying. As an accredited Chamber of Commerce, we are literally two steps away from Downing Street.”

Focus on key business challenges
It is important to the Chamber that it understands the challenges facing businesses in the area. Sarah explains: “Skills continue to be one of the biggest challenges facing business. It’s not necessarily the technical skills that employers are finding hard to recruit for, but the softer skills. Some of these basic communications skills were lost during Covid and we need to find a way to address this.
“There are also challenges around business confidence in general. Many companies are struggling to remain resilient in the face of so much uncertainty. There is a general mood of ‘what’s coming next?’. The impact of the increase in National Insurance Contributions (NIC) is just the latest in a long list of things that businesses have had to adapt to and account for. Another issue locally is around infrastructure, the transport links. By understanding the challenges facing businesses, we can then see what we can do to help address them.”
“We’re also going to be facing new challenges due to devolution with
elections due to take place in Cheshire and Warrington in May 2026. Devolution will involve establishing a Mayoral Combined Authority across Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, and Warrington Borough Council. It’ll bring all sorts of changes, some benefits but also some aspects that businesses will need to adapt to. It’s unclear what it will look like yet, but it’ll be interesting to see how it unfolds”.
Vision around adding value
It’s not just about challenges. Although businesses are facing unprecedented challenges, the role of the Chamber is not just helping to address these. Sarah said: “A big part of our role is also about celebrating and showcasing the amazing businesses we have in our region. We hold over 85 events each year. Each one offers members incredible opportunities to engage, learn and grow. However, personally my favourite event of the year is the Annual Ball & Recognition Awards which we hold each year in November. Celebrating success is so important and this gala event is the highlight of the year.”
