Nano Particle Cone Technology The advanced ‘Nano particle’ technology, incorporated into the cone material of the bass/midrange drive units of the ‘Performance’ series loudspeakers, delivers clear sonic advantages. Nano particles are incredibly small, typically 100 nanometres in diameter, (which means 2000 of them, laid side by side, would be the same width as a human hair). Added to a conventional high quality cone material, such as polypropylene, they diffuse throughout the mixture to form a new nano-composite structure. The resultant cone boasts enhanced mechanical properties such as improved stiffness, reduced mass and an incredible 75% higher tensile strength. These technical advances deliver a faster transient response and reduced cone break up, leading to exceptionally low distortion, transparent and dynamic sound.

FROM THE

EDITOR’S DESK

MADE IN MANCHESTER!

A very warm welcome to our preview issue for Essential Install Live! North. Situated in its new home of EventCity Manchester, the event has expanded once again this year and EI looks forward to welcoming all to this CI showcase on October 9. With more stands and more exhibitors this year, we sincerely hope you find a visit to the show useful and that it puts you on the front foot for the months ahead. Look out for the EI team at the event in our branded shirts and do stop us if you have any comments or suggestion about the show or the magazine. See you in Manchester!

Two Days or not Two Days? Essential Install Live! South doubles up More show news this month as a decision has been made as to whether to move Essential Install Live! South to a two day event. Ever since the Essential Install Live! concept was launched, EI promised that the shows would be ‘listening shows’ and look to develop the events in full partnership with the industry. In short, find out what the industry needed to make a successful event and then provide it. Prior to this year’s Southern show opening, all exhibitors were invited to a discussion forum where they were able to feedback comment on likes and dislikes about the event. One of the main talking points was whether to move the show up to a two day event, with the pro and cons lively debated. In the end it was decided that the proof of the pudding would be in the eating and that exhibitors would be in a much better position to give a view after the show. The good news was that the event was packed out this year with several exhibitors having to send back to their HQ’s for more staff to cope with the amount of visitors! Following the event, all exhibitors were surveyed and EI is delighted to announce that overwhelmingly the vote was for a two day event. So in 2014 Essential Install Live! South will take place on June 11-12 at its home of Sandown Park. Full details can be obtained at the new show website www.essentialinstalllive.eu Over 50 stands were sold on the first day of release for this new and expanded Southern show! So installers can look forward to a packed exhibitor floor with even more serious CI to sink their teeth into. DANIEL J SAIT, editor, Essential Install

Reflex revs up with autos and audio

BBG welcomes aboard Boston Acoustics

Reflex has unveiled details of this year’s Technology Day for the 10th anniversary of the integrator’s annual event for AV professionals. The theme for 2013 is Autos and AV and the event takes place at the Audi Quattro Rooms in Brentford. The event on October 22 is targeted at people with a commercial interest in audio visual technology and big draws are seminars and live announcements. This year’s programme covers subjects such as using the laws of physics to overcome audio challenges, collaboration using Microsoft Lync and the new generation of live video production. A Five Minutes of Fame stage will cover subjects including 4K/UHD, creating brilliant video wall content and the countdown to the audio channel switchover. A large format display called Big Just Got Bigger will feature the only prototype of Samsung’s huge 95in display, the first opportunity for a UK audience to see the product. The new NEC V801, 80in LED screen will also be on show. The Technology Day is Reflex’s main event for showcasing AV technologies, said Reflex managing director Roland Dreesden: “The day keeps users updated about business benefits of new technologies. It provides a rare opportunity to talk directly to top manufacturers under one roof. This year’s exhibition will be the largest ever with 40 manufacturers.” Visitors will have the opportunity to see iconic cars such as the Audi Le Mans and the historic first Rally Quattro. Reflex was established in 1983 to capitalise on opportunities thrown up by the invention of the data projector.

BBG Distribution has been appointed exclusive UK distributor for Boston Acoustics’ range of custom install and outdoor speakers. Boston hopes the new agreement will allow it to capitalise upon BBG’s strength in the independent electrical retailer and installer channels. BBG distributes consumer and professional electronics throughout the UK from its 20,000 square-foot office and warehouse complex in Watford. The subsidiary of Peerless Industries celebrates its 20-year anniversary this year. Boston, meanwhile, has built a reputation over 30 years offering a range of CI equipment. Its in-wall and in-ceiling speakers, for example, feature reduced bezel grilles for seamless integration with the wall or ceiling, advanced woofers for more bass from less amplifier power and easy-to-fit magnetic grilles that are paint ready to match the surrounding decor. High humidity in-ceiling speakers and LCRs complete the line up. The Voyager Series of outdoor speakers has been tested in tough marine environments and is built to withstand harsh conditions. The Bravo and Soundware speakers are regarded to be The Voyager 60 outdoor among the most stylish and speaker has been tested in tough marine environments best performing products for on-wall and in-corner applications. BBG director of consumer sales Debbie Simms said: “An increasing number of independents in the UK are offering varying levels of installation service to their customers and now BBG can support this move by offering a competitive quality with high trade margins for both retailers and installers.”

DAWSONS MAKES A CEDIA SPLASH TWICE

Dawsons won best marine installation and best innovative solution awards

A pioneering audio-visual multi-cabin wireless system has won best marine installation gong at the 2013 awards of the Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) awards. The sleek and ‘invisible’ high-end equipment by Dawsons was installed aboard Princess Yachts’ My Imperial Princess. The bespoke multi-cabin wireless system utilises a range of products tailored especially for the yacht’s internal and external areas. Each cabin features a Denon iPod dock and Apple iPod

Touch along with a Denon Blu-ray receiver, which is paired with the Linn 104/106 in ceiling speakers and Velodyne subwoofers. There is also a Kaleidescape movie server and all of these are operated through a Crestron iPad control system. The iPad interface was custom designed by Dawsons’ team and allows guests to create a personalised environment within their cabins. They can adjust air conditioning and lighting within the cabin, while the captain has access to all cabins from his iPad and can globally set temperatures and lighting ahead of guests’ arrivals. Dawsons also won a best innovative solution gong for a bespoke domestic cinema, the first in the UK to use a Stewart’s Star Glas projection screen with a rear projection system. The project involved excavating a further 2m of a house basement and leaving a 4m-wide slot in the ceiling for the 300kg screen to be lowered. The cinema screen was a 120in Starglas 60 with 2.35:1 aspect. Dawsons has won best marine installation two years running and a host of other CEDIA awards, which are in their eighth year. FIRST STEP INTO CI: A LETTER TO THE EDITOR Hi there my name is Chris Bolton and I am looking to begin a career in the Custom Install industry. As an individual I work effectively within a team or independently to exceed shared and personal goals. I am adaptable, committed and professional and have always worked with a positive attitude. The past seven years with my current employer (Mouchel) has been within an engineering focused role, lone working or working within small teams, managing my own day to day workloads and supervising subcontracted staff. Working on various projects across numerous disciplines has seen me have to adapt quickly and effectively to new working practices and environments. Adhering to tight deadlines and making sure clients expectations are met or exceeded has been a major part of the role. My experience in this role I believe has provided many transferrable skills I could offer the CI sector. Being a massive AV and IT fan and avid reader of industry bible Essential Install, I am keen to make the move into this

exciting and cutting edge sector. I have a keen interest in software development, specifically Web and iOS mobile applications for which I am currently developing my skillsets with online courses. I also serve a small handful of clients currently with general IT support ranging from home networking setup and advice to purchasing and upgrade services. I also participate in numerous ‘Alpha’ and ‘Beta’ testing of pre-release products. Whilst realising there would be much to learn, I believe my current skills set, knowledge and enthusiasm would enable me to hit the ground running as a junior technician and quickly become a valuable part of an install and support team. I am based in the South East and hold a full and clean driving license. Get in contact if you would like to know more and are looking for the next addition to your team. Essential HABITECH

PEAK PERFORMANCE Habitech’s recently appointed audio guru, Giovanni Scatola, introduces the all-new Sonance Visual Performance range. Before joining Habitech I worked for twenty years as a mastering engineer, most recently at London’s Metropolis Studios, which has credits that read like a who’s who of the music industry. Put simply, mastering is the final stage in the production chain, when tracks are edited and EQ’d before the music gets committed to file or disc. Actually I specialised in re-mastering works for many labels and developed a great respect for sound quality. So when the guys at Habitech sat me in front of the new Visual Performance (VP) series I had a pretty good idea of their audio potential (they’re also beautifully designed and built).

Top Quality This next generation of VP models – over fifty of them – has been developed specifically to raise the level of quality and audio performance in the custom speaker market. It would be an idle boast, the kind of thing you read in brochures every day, if it weren’t for the fact that Sonance has meticulously re-engineered VP from the ground up to perform like genuine Hi-Fi speakers (listen to the 4in VP46 and you’ll know what I mean). Developed using advanced driver materials, critical test and measurement processes and intensive appraisal in anechoic and real-world environments, VP is a significant achievement. It’s been designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the world’s first architectural speaker - made by the company that became Sonance - by marking another decisive advance for the industry. What the original VP did for aesthetics with the first microtrim grille, the new VP is doing for sound quality.

Sound as the selling point To my knowledge - and I’m new to CI – architectural speakers have hitherto relied on the virtues of concealment as the major proposition. Accordingly, designers prioritise the ability to disappear over the capacity for great sound.

16 Essential Install

Emphatically, new VP is not just another driver in a wall. Sure it disappears as effectively as its predecessor, but this generation satisfies the altogether more difficult challenge of sounding consistently more accurate, controlled and dynamic in situations traditionally hostile to sound quality. With new VP, Sonance has tamed an unpredictable acoustic environment by conceiving every VP model as if it were a Hi-Fi monitor. First, the company has selected the best materials for VP drivers. I’ve experienced combinations of Carbon Fibre and Rohacell, Kevlar and Nomex, ceramic and aluminium utilised with great success in many studio monitors. Second, Sonance has employed advanced test and simulation software to ensure a consistent frequency response and sonic signature at any SPL with significantly minimised distortion at higher volumes. The power response is smooth out to +/-60° to deliver superb off-axis performance, allowing VP to be installed for the best aesthetic results without compromising audio quality. The company has used high excursion, forward-placed woofers with three times the travel of similar speakers to deliver an extended bass response. For fine-tuning in-situ, the independent 13° pivoting of mid drivers and tweeters allows frequencies to be directed as required and the tweeters have low diffraction to provide clear and accurate results.

Four performance levels Fundamental acoustic consistency and the ability to make critical fine frequency adjustments, mean that in practice you can mix different VP combinations for the best performance in any installation. Choose from as many as four performance levels to customise the outcome precisely for the client according to application and cost. Entry-level 2 for

Essential HABITECH instance will produce a clear, detailed sound with great definition in corridors, hallways, children’s bedrooms and gyms. VP Level 4 speakers deliver impressively clear music with a powerful bass in guest bedrooms and in multi-channel audio where the quality can be appreciated even at background listening levels. Whenever and wherever music needs to be delivered at louder volumes, Level 6 VP has a deep bass response and an open, detailed midrange to define vocals and enhance instruments for main listening environments such as kitchens and living rooms. The highest quality VP Level 8 speakers bring everything played through them to life with accurate imaging and sonic purity - best reserved for dedicated audio listening rooms and high end installations.

Great sound everywhere The versatility of VP extends to ‘Thinline’ models for shallow wall/ceiling cavities; moisture-proof ‘Extreme’ models for bathrooms patios and saunas; specialised surround models, woofers and subwoofers for full-range AV work; and a dedicated ‘Cinema’ series of inwall and in-ceiling speakers designed for higher-end home cinema, with integrated cabinets for spill control, multiple bass drivers to minimise cancellation and coaxial mid/ tweeters for a more consistent off-axis response in theatre. On top of all this, VP offers the added flexibility of Single Stereo models, which convert to surround models with the flick of a switch.

Perfect fit and finish And with great sound in place, VP gives you the tools for truly stealthy concealment and superb aesthetic results. Its award-winning one-piece microtrim grille allows for a one-

step painting process, simplified by an easily removable scrim cloth to guarantee a clean fit and finish. Strong neodymium magnetic frames ensure a tight grille fit along edges and into corners and to complete the aesthetic fine-tuning, a square adaptor converts any round ceiling speaker into a square one for all but Extreme VP speakers: genius! If you’ve read this far, you’ll know that new Sonance VP is the complete proposition for great sound and looks for any application in every room. It’s been gratifying to experience what they can do and independent reviewers agree (see Brent’s comment below). Hear them for yourself at Essential Install Live! Brent Butterworth, veteran Hi-Fi reviewer on the VP48 at About.com “Many in-walls pander to people whose understanding of audio can be summed up as ‘BASS GOOD!’ So, the manufacturer slaps in a big woofer and doesn’t worry about getting a nice, smooth frequency response. Obviously, the VP48 is targeted at listeners with refined tastes. In the demo I got, it sounded incredibly smooth, with some of the most natural vocal reproduction I’ve heard from an inwall. In fact, it reminded me of the LS3/5a, a classic British mini-speaker originally used as a recording monitor for the BBC, but later embraced by audiophiles for its realistic sound.”

Essential Q&A

COOL IT! When the world comes tumbling down, award-winning Finite design consultant Matt Wayne heads for the garden, hits the wireless sound system and lets Mos Def do the rest, you dig? EI: What are you doing right now (apart from filling this questionnaire of course)? MW: I’m sitting in our early morning engineers’ meeting, which happens first thing every Monday. It’s useful for us to sit down together to review the previous week and discuss what’s planned for the coming week. EI: If you were not involved in AV, what would you

EI: You can invite three people living or dead out for a pint (not including family and friends); who and why? MW: I would definitely invite Jenson Button as I’m a huge F1

be doing? MW: My original background is furniture and product design so I’d likely be working within a design team, probably on the technical or CAD side of the process.

fan, Mos Def a.k.a Dante Terrell Smith, I’ve grown up listening to his music and he simply exudes ‘cool’. Finally I’d want Terry Pratchett there, not only one of my favourite authors but a witty and thoughtful person.

EI: What project are you most proud of in your career and why? MW: I recently designed the winning project at this year’s CEDIA awards in the Best Home Cinema under £40K category: I was immensely proud of the installation from start to finish.

EI: You can watch only one movie for the rest of your life, what is it ? MW: Hmmm, I get through a lot of films in my line of work and my preferences change quite regularly, however Dark Knight is probably my favourite and always features in my demo reel.

EI: What is the worst thing (outside of your control) that has ever gone wrong on a project? MW: During a recent installation and just before we arrived on site the entire roof of an extensive renovation project fell in undoing over 16 weeks hard work and delaying the project by over three months.

EI: What is your favourite piece of AV kit on the market right now? MW: My current favourite is the Soundcast Junior and terrific wireless speaker system that is designed for the garden, I spent a great deal more time in the garden this summer because of it.

EI: What is the best thing about working in CI/AV? MW: As well as getting to play with the latest tech first, I still love the reaction of a client to the installation of a slick, cutting-edge system that exceeds their expectations.

EI: Are Architects/Developers/Interior Designers becoming more receptive to the concept of CI? MW: Gradually, often as a result of providing them with training such as our CPD courses for the Royal Institute of British Architects. But increasingly they are being asked by their clients to provide at least some pre-wired infrastructure to allow the client to incorporate this technology at a later date. This is forming a large portion of our work, as we work alongside developers to provide them with a unique selling point for their projects. Providing accurate design documentation is essential as once the cables have been installed and the house finished, it would be incredibly disruptive to alter the cabling arrangement.

EI: What one thing could the industry collectively do to improve its standing and profitability? MW: I believe that a more rigorous assessment of custom installation companies or differing levels of accreditation depending on the experience and capabilities of each firm would go a long way to improving our professional lot. EI: What is the most important bit of kit you use every day? MW: My laptop, from emailing and tweeting to researching new products and producing proposals – it’s essential.

Essential NILES SPEAKERS

THE PROFESSIONAL’S CHOICE Distributed exclusively in the UK by Invision, Niles Audio’s range of in-ceiling and in-wall loudspeakers offer installers a wide range of install offerings. Invision argues the market understands the company’s reputation for quality and value and the brand is increasingly the first choice for many installers.

Niles Speakers have many patented technologies to push the envelope of what is possible from an integrated speaker

Niles Audio has been involved with the custom installation industry since 1978 and was one of the founding members of CEDIA in the US in 1989. Following the introduction of the company’s first dedicated CI speaker in 1988, Niles has continued to develop new technologies to provide a high quality listening experience, responding to specific installation requirements. “Specifying Niles speakers is a complete no-brainer,” comments Invision UK sales specialist Chris Dawson. “The build quality is second to none and there isnt anything else on the market that can match a Niles in-wall or in-ceiling speaker for audio quality. This is a company that continues to innovate, not resting on its laurels and we receive incredible feedback from our dealers with regard to the overall quality of the Niles range. For in-wall or in-ceiling installations, there really is nothing the match Niles.” Invision argues that interior design professionals appreciate the low-profile, magnetically attached MicroThin grilles, which mount flush to the ceiling or wall to blend with any room’s décor. Paintable grilles and an optional square form factor provide the designer with the freedom to match room treatments and colours. With DS loudspeakers, Invision says it is easy to create a great sounding audio system that’s also easy to live with. DS Directed Soundfield technology directs the sound to the listening area, regardless of where the loudspeakers are installed, adapting to any room environment. The patented pivoting driver assembly with a new patent-pending, smoothaction mechanism enables independent adjustment of the tweeter and woofer so sound is directed to the optimum location. In addition, advanced driver materials, high-quality crossovers and pivoting woofers and tweeters work in concert to provide a listening experience that Niles says is hard to beat.

The maker also says that IMPACT (Improved Aluminium Ceramic Technology) woofers and tweeters and other advanced materials ensure superb sound resolution. In addition, precision crossover networks, copper shorting caps and Kapton voice coil formers handle the demands of digital music and home cinema. New, patent-pending spring-tensioned mounting clamps adjust for uneven mounting surfaces and automatically compensate for the expansion and contraction of building materials. Niles loudspeakers are weather-resistant and can be installed in moist areas such as saunas, bathrooms, and outdoor patios under eaves. Backed by Niles’ Lifetime Limited Warranty, the speakers install securely and provide years of peace of mind for the listener and installer, argues invision. When developing the CM Series of ceiling mounted speakers, Niles took care to integrate many of the features of its DS models, from the stylish round or optional square MicroThin grilles that disappear into the décor to the advanced driver technology of Niles’ UltraSilk Teteron and top of the line nano-coated IMPACT woofers and tweeters. The manufacturer says all of this comes together in each model to deliver the defined bass, silky-smooth mid-ranges and crisp vocals installers have come to expect from Niles. With the RWC In-Ceiling Series, each loudspeaker features an advanced Rear Wave control enclosure that is uniquely designed for retrofit installations and optimised for high quality, predictable sound performance and reduced sound bleed into adjacent rooms. The low profile, magnetically attached grilles blend into any room’s interior design. These models are also equipped with the patented directed soundfield TM pivoting woofer technology. Invision argues that Niles has the right in-wall loudspeaker for any system. Each one has different features and performance characteristics to satisfy varying conditions such as sound quality, placement, room size or room acoustics. For example, Niles’ exclusive tweeter housing ratchets in 1mm increments to precisely direct the high frequencies into the listening area. Baffle-mounted bass and treble tone controls allow compensation for less than ideal room anomalies and speaker placement. Another installer friendly touch is the standard snap-in loudspeaker baffle that saves time and facilitates quick service while maintaining an unbroken paint seal. Essential AMINA

BETTER BY DESIGN Invisible speaker specialist AMINA, offers its advice on working with architects and interior designers. Amina Technologies is well aware of the impact its products have visually and structurally on a property. Visually the benefits are obvious and having a sound system with no visual intrusion is a designers’ dream. Structurally, there is a need to consider the mechanics of how the products fit into the fabric of a building and although simple to install, life is much simpler if due consideration to where and how the speakers will be fitted is given at an early stage. Working with architects from the start of the project allows all possibilities to be considered. This may include options that would otherwise have been discounted or not possible at a later stage, such as fitting behind polished plaster or wood panelling and creates flexibility on speaker locations, which lessens as the project develops. These influencers are passionate about aesthetics and therefore motivated about using technology that provides the

plan for speaker locations, cabling and special installation requirements, e.g. unusual plasterboard thickness, lime or polished plaster finishes. When hidden technology is specified later on in a project, at best, it can make for a complicated installation and at worst certain solutions may have to be rejected if they can’t be retrofitted. A great example of this in action was the case of one integrator who had worked closely with the architect on a multi-room project including Amina invisible loudspeakers. The client had requested invisible sound in a luxury bathroom, featuring a floor to ceiling mother of pearl finish! So no retrofit or late decision options here! Working together, the architects, installer and Amina enabled planning and testing before the room was constructed and a solution was engineered that included Amina speakers being installed during the actual manufacturing of the mother of pearl covered panelling. The result? a truly stunning room and the alternative? No invisible sound or perhaps no sound at all in the bathroom as any kind of fitment would have impacted the appearance. Collaborative efforts can create lasting partnerships that lead to regular future business. In the example above, the architect on the project was provided a solution by the integrator that they probably didn’t think was possible, so where will they turn the next time? Many similar examples of collaboration can be quoted, from developing a bespoke installation Educating the design community to the advantages of hidden technology method for within the damp course can drive the CI sector of a 500 year old barn conversion, functionality that their customers desire to a hotel spa where the interior designer needed support without impacting the look of the design. throughout the supply chain to convince all concerned that Thus by educating influencers and their customers as to her dream of invisible sound was really possible. what is possible, the knowledge in the market that invisible Amina Technologies recognise that for invisible sound and discrete technology is a realistic option increases. loudspeakers both architects and interior designers are When in an architect’s office, questions will often be raised absolutely key in the decision making process, especially about a variety of projects often very speculatively. Essential PEGASUS

PEGASUS TAKES FLIGHT! A highly innovative screen manipulation and support product is about to hit the CI market. 18 months in development, the Pegasus Mount provides a highly versatile solution that can offer multiple placing options within a commercial or domestic setting.

Pegasus is designed to provide a step change in screen positioning and control

32 Essential Install

The product is being bought to market by the experienced team of Paul Bromley, CEO, founder and inventor of the system and Sebastian Dearden-Briggs, performing the role of technical director, both with solid backgrounds in innovation and enterprise. The idea for the products came from Paul’s successful property development business (Bromley Prestige Properties) where a need was identified for an advanced off-the-shelve technology, that would free up the placement of TVs and screens around a property. Basically, using an inventive mix of tracking and support structures, screens can be supported and moved around within a room to offer multiple viewing positions all at the touch of a button. The makers say the product offers the planet’s only automated, cable-less, mobile track mounted flat screen display solution, providing HD transmission simultaneously with highly versatile movement over powered runway technology. Sebastian Dearden-Briggs of Aclass Technology (UK) Ltd, one of the companies responsible for the development, said: “As a leading supplier of AV solutions to both the domestic and commercial market we have been pleased to work closely with Pegasus Mounts to further develop this innovative concept. Pegasus Mount’s integration of our HDMI over PowerLine product, HDJuiceBox , has enabled Pegasus to ‘fly without wires’.” Pegasus allows the user to infinitely position flat screen displays up to 80in in screen size (larger sizes can be accommodated via a custom build service) within a domestic or commercial environment, with remote automated operation. Multiple displays can be fitted on a Pegasus runway with each display able to move

independently whilst delivering uninterrupted viewing. Able to position a screen anywhere in the X,Y,Z axis throughout any size of room, or anywhere horizontally or vertically across a multi-media communications room wall, the concept is designed to take automated screen positioning into a new era.

Keep on moving The concept can also allow the screen to tilt up to an angle of 65° or rotated through 360° provding a complete solution for the screen to be viewed from anywhere and to create the perfect viewing position and angle for any application. Installers will also be pleased to learn that Pegasus offers both RS232 and IP control. The integrated HD over Powerline technology not only allows transmission of 1080p signals, but also supports switching between three separate HD sources and includes IR Pass-through to control connected source equipment. In addition, the integrated Ethernet over Powerline provides for SmartTV, digital signage or other network based display options. Pegasus can be programmed to take up pre-arranged viewing positions on single or multiple screen installations offering solutons, such as simultaneous pre-programmed transmission of advertising and/or other media broadcasting. The product allows the screen to adjust itself at various point of sale locations; it can stop, manoeuvre lower, tilt or swivel. The Pegasus solution is modular and adaptable enabling it to fit into the majority of room sizes and types of installations. The company has also created a number of cost effective ‘Flight Packs’ to meet differing requirements. These can be expanded to meet varying needs by adding modular components including extra runway track, vehicles, turntables and poles. The concept also offers a number of finishing products to ensure that the installation meets aesthetic requirements including end pieces, moldings, a choice of colours (silver, cream and black) as well as a flush mount finish. The Flight Packs are designed for easy product selection and offer a choice of capabilities, however the company can also deliver a bespoke design service for more complex or unusual needs. Pegasus has been developed from the combined experience of LDT Design, Slipstream Engineering Design and Aclass Technology (UK) over the past 18 months drawing on over 50 years of engineering and design expertise. The product can also be seen at Essential Install Live! North on Stands 70-71. More Information: Pegasus Mounts +44 (0)1484 664588 www.pegasus-mounts.com

Essential A DAY IN THE LIFE: OPTION ONE COMMUNICATIONS Liam Holley (right) and Lee Jacobs of Option One Communications have the City of Bath right on their doorstep, a major source of work for the company

ITS BATH TIME! Working mainly in the beautiful City of Bath, Liam Holley and Lee Jacobs of Option One Communications explain to EI how the company has evolved from a telecommunications installer to a fully-fledged custom install business.

As an experienced telecommunications installer, Laim explains that he began to notice the opportunities offered by the CI industry several years ago. With many of the skills needed to expand the business already on board, Laim looked for someone to help him take the business forward. With a background in AV, gained in touring live events, Lee joined the company around four years and the journey towards expanding the company’s portfolio began. Liam says: “It’s taken us a good four years to really get where we want to be. There is a lot to learn and gaining traction in new areas takes time. However, these days we are carrying out everything from whole house automation projects, multi-room audio, HD distribution as well as telecoms and networking projects.” Lee jokes: “It actually took us about a year to fill out all the forms to set up our trade accounts! the industry is not necessarily the easiest to get started in. But we have some really good relationships now with the likes of AWE, Habitech, Invision and Alltrade.” Liam adds: “We are really pleased with the progress the company has made. The wider range of products we now offer means we can deliver some really stunning and fully integrated results to customers old and new.” Some of the first CI jobs the company took on offered a considerable challenge. Laim explains: “One of the first whole house systems we took on was an 11 bedroom, seven bathroom property in South Stoke, just outside Bath. As well as the AV requirements including HD distribution, we provided IT, data and telecoms. We had to use 10 DECT cordless handset stations, three different Wi-Fi access types (business, guest and home) and 11 Wi-Fi base stations to get the seamless communications the client needed over the whole property.” More recently the company has developed its standing within the install sector by becoming part of the on-line installer community #LiveInstall. Lee says: “We met with group member Glenn Impett and the founder Kris Gamble at the Southern Essential Install Live! and got on board after that. We have found it to be a real boon, already gaining work through the initiative and it’s great to be part of something that is working to promote the install concept to a wider audience, particularly interior designers and architects.” The company is also spreading the word by taking a stand at the South West Home Building and Renovation

34 Essential Install

Show. Lee says: “We went as visitors last year to check it out and decided to exhibit this year and really show the visitors who comprise of developers, builders, interior designers and self-builders what we can offer them.” Liam adds: “Habitech have helped us out with some demonstration kit and we will also have a Control4 demo on stand as well as a power-point showing our past projects and achievements. As we all know, the AV guys are often the last to get involved in a project, so we want to put ourselves firmly at the planning stage so we can help get a better result for everyone concerned.”

Making the best of Bath The guys explain that although a great source of work, the building stock with its solid stone construction and status as a UNESCO UK World Heritage Site, means Bath can be a challenging environment. Liam says: “I would say around 80% of our work is in Bath. With the Georgian housing stock, planning consents can be a real problem and can occasionally halt a project all together.” Lee adds: “Just basic stuff like getting cables around these buildings can be a problem because of the stone construction. Of course Wi-Fi can be very difficult also meaning more access points are needed as well as more base stations. But we are using products like Luxul and our own knowledge of how the buildings behave to get the performance needed.” Liam says: “These challenges do not necessarily go away if we are working on a modern new build. Re-enforced concrete poured walls, modern insulation techniques and systems like under-floor heating can all offer problems with maintaining a good Wi-Fi signal around a property. But as with period properties, we are finding ways to get the performance needed.”

Creating the right kit list In terms of the products the company favours, Liam explains: “Having recently completed our Control4 training, we are really looking forward to offering our customers the benefits of this system. We chose it as we felt it gives the most flexibility being able to offer a single room solution all the way to the really big whole house projects at a good price point.”

Essential A DAY IN THE LIFE: OPTION ONE COMMUNICATIONS

The company is getting involved in some seriously modern projects like this newbuild eco house (image courtesy of Hewitt Studios)

Lee adds: “We tend to use Panasonic projectors and are big fans of FS Cables with its solid product range and next day delivery. TVs we try to keep things simple by using mainstream brands like LG and Panasonic, but we do use Loewe as well, a company that seems really keen on the CI market currently, putting plenty of work our way.” Liam adds: “For Telecoms we most often use Siemens kit, its reliable and we know the products inside out and so know immediately what a property will need. “Away from the hardware, we are recent converts and big fans of a project and work flow management App called GEOop. We have only had it for six weeks now, but it’s very in-expensive and to be honest has transformed how easy it is to create projects, invoice for them and organise our work. It’s really worth checking out.” With so much good work put in place to take the company to the next level, projects are really starting to

increase in number and complexity. Liam Says: “We could not be busier at the moment. Particularly in the last couple of months the local building and renovation scene has really picked up again with scaffold going up all over the City.” Lee explains: “Currently we are working on an eco-home being built into the countryside just on the outskirts of Bath. This is a Control4 project with four zones of audio including an exterior one as well as fibre and data networks and door entry. One of the couple is an artist and has her studio is based in the home so she needs reliable and fast access to telecoms and the Internet. “Speaker wise we have gone for Sonance exterior speakers on the patio area and some really attractive Anthony Gallo drivers (who we met with at Essential Install Live!) on the inside to get the sound and the style needed.” Lee adds: “We are also waiting to hear about a 20 zone project we quoted for. It will be our biggest project to date if it comes in, it’s a full automation, AV, telecoms package. A really nice property with quite extensive grounds that give us nice potential to add extra functionality in the future, so fingers crossed!” Sounds like a plan to EI, so with that Lee and Laim head off to continue their mission of bringing high quality installs to the South West. Essential DOCTOR ROCK

IN AT THE DEEP END Doctor Rock is ready to roll with this month’s teaser from CYP technical director Kevin Kray: What is happening with colour within HDMI systems and how does this affect their use? Colour depth is the most common colour problem area for HDMI installers, but first, let’s get in the mood. Long ago, a galaxy far away was plunged into a period of colour war. Rebel colour spaces struck from hidden depths to win their first victory against the evil HDMI Empire. The most common source that has Deep Colour is a Blu-ray player

During the battle, rebel forces led by Doctor Rock managed to swipe secret plans of the HDMI empire’s ultimate weapon, the Depth Star, a colour space station with enough power to destroy an entire HDMI system. Pursued by the empire’s sinister agents, only Doctor Rock, as custodian of the stolen plans, can save our HDMI systems and restore freedom to the installer. Back to reality, of sorts. This month marks my fourth article or, if you prefer, episode IV and we’re looking into colour depth. Unless you have been attacked by this, or have a perverse desire to understand it, you are probably not aware of this variation of colour. But you are far more likely to have experienced the problems and the resulting dark side of the display. As we know, colour depth, or Deep Colour when talking about higher bit rate colour depths, is the most common colour problem area for HDMI installers. This is down to the amount of colour bits it uses for each of the red, green and blue channels. The more bits available, the smoother the colour rendering. Think about an image of a daytime sky Standard Colour from Blu-ray player on a 15m HDMI cable.

where you can see blue colour bands across the heavens; as you increase the colour depth, these bands completely disappear. When HDMI was first released this was not so much of

36 Essential Install

an issue as only standard colour depth (8 bits per colour channel) was available. With subsequent releases of HDMI Deep Colour was introduced allowing 10, 12 and even 16 bit colour depths per channel. These deep colour signals add a large amount of bandwidth to the HDMI signal being transferred and greatly reduce the effective length of any HDMI cabling within a system. Where you may have been able to get away with a 15m cable with 1080p 8bit signal resolution, as you move up to higher colour depths, you end up struggling to get signal at 5m with a 1080p 16bit signal. Most up-to-date players will normally have a Deep Colour setting in the set-up menu system. So if you switch between say a satellite receiver and a Blu-ray player and start to see any kind of video distortions, you may well be running too long an HDMI cable for the colour depth being outputted by the Blu-ray player. There can be more serious or more subtle video distortion with cabling bandwidth issues. At the subtle end are small

Deep Colour from Blu-ray player on a 15m HDMI cable

white sparkles in the video picture. At the other, more serious, end of the scale you do not get picture at all and the system has fully turned to the dark side. The most logical way to overcome this issue but maintain your lovely colour, is to shorten the HDMI cable length. But beware, just dropping down from 15m to 10m HDMI cabling will not necessarily resolve all video distortions, so you need to run tests. If dropping down in length is not possible, you still have options. You can insert an HDMI EQ or Repeater which can re-clock and repair the signal. But even in this situation, if you are hardly or not getting a picture at all, it is unlikely to work with your present HDMI cabling. In these extreme cases, changing the delivery system to a CAT cable based solution will almost certainly resolve your problem; the best of the present HDMI over CAT system is the HDBaseT chipset by Valens Semiconductors, I’m sure you’ve all heard of it. This is a great chipset and will easily carry Deep Colour across a CAT cable that replaces an existing HDMI cable infrastructure. These solutions should ensure the evil HDMI Empire is once again brought back under the control of the Jedi or even Padawan installer.

Essential WYRESTORM

GIVE YOURSELF OPTIONS

Wyrestorm introduces its Custom HDBaseT Pro Plus Matrix.

Market feedback and Wyrestorm knowhow has resulted in the company’s most capable matrix yet, the Modular MX-PPPOH Pro Plus Matrix

This October, Wyrestorm says it will take custom AV distribution to the next level with the release of two modular, built-to-order matrixes with a promise to provide the most flexible, scalable, fully featured yet cost effective HDBaseT matrix to date. The Modular MX-PP-POH Pro Plus Matrix is a custombuilt HDBaseT (8x8 or 16x16) switching solution that features RS232 routing capabilities, integrated Power over HDBaseT and a customisable modular transmission card design that enables the selection of any combination of the eight separate digital and analogue cards to tailor the matrix for near-limitless input/output configurations for residential or commercial projects. Whilst modular in card form, the four existing Wyrestorm matrix models offer HDMI input capabilities alone, with display receivers needing to be powered at display zones and with RS232 options limited to central control of output zones. Wyrestorm noted the number of installations still requiring connectivity of analogue as well as digital inputs and sought to expand the flexibility offered.

Key capabilities Power-over-HDBaseT (PoH) remotely powers display receivers on all outputs, including daisy-chaining, to remove the need for local power at the display for a faster, easier and more energy efficient installation. The result is optimum power dispersal to cool-running PoH receivers that complement the Wyrestorm modular chassis design. As a single mains source powers the matrix and all connected receivers, energy is conserved by reducing the number of power supplies required with integrated PSUs for 8x8 and 16x16 matrix/PoH functionality consuming 170W and 310W respectively, with receivers only powered when the matrix itself is on. As Wyrestorm felt that the HDMI matrix was increasingly becoming the backbone of multi-room AV installations, the company provides a range of transmission cards that satisfies the connectivity of both digital and analogue AV sources. These include DVI, VGA and HDMI in/out, with RCA analogue and 3.5mm mini-jack stereo for audio only inputs and dedicated SPDIF digital audio and analogue audio outputs – all converting to an HDBaseT output – as well as offering HDMI in only or HDBaseT out only cards. Wyrestorm also added an HDMI pass-through with daisy-chain capabilities to connect multiple matrixes and enable vast arrays to be achieved or blanking modules for

larger distributions to be built for near endless switching configuration options. Conscious that these cards would still only provide audio to the display and coupled with integrator feedback regarding issues of managing audio and video between separate amplifiers and matrixes, Wyrestorm developed the AMP-001-010 HDBaseT Digital Audio Amplifier. Functioning as an addressable, bi-directionally IR controlled HDBaseT 70m receiver and PoH pass-through device, the AMP includes a 2.1 channel 2x25W audio amplifier with ARC functionality, additional local audio input and the ability to be daisy-chained up to seven times either fitted centrally at the head end, behind screens or at any point in between. Wyrestorm has also developed an intuitive online system design tool available on its website to guide integrators through five easy steps to a fully configured MX-PP-POH system. Starting with matrix model selection, transmission cards are selected via drag-and-drop and a summary provided keeps track of selected matrix/card combinations and exactly what inputs and outputs the systems offers. Users can save, print or share their configurations and load previously saved selections to edit or add to as necessary. Configurations are submitted to Wyrestorm and users personally contacted to confirm their selection before their order is confirmed. The MX-PP-POH offers both RS232 and IP integration with Crestron, AMX, Control4, RTI, Elan, URC, Savant and Bitwise. However, the maker says the most significant leap forward lies in exactly how it controls, with the Modular PoH Matrix not only offering central RS232 control, but also fully routable to each receiver in each display zone. This enables totally addressable bidirectional control of receivers either individually or grouped together depending on the installation and control requirements. Wyrestorm says combining this level of control with the AMP-001-010 Digital Amplifier, it is possible to remotely control sources, AMPs and displays in each location, for the ultimate in installer flexibility and profitability as cabling infrastructure is decreased, not to mention even greater client satisfaction and industry vitality. Essential AMX

THE X FACTOR RETURNS! AMX says it has made the popular Modero X Series faster, easier to use and visually superior. EI stays in touch with the latest. The AMX response to tablets and smartphones moving into the CI space was refreshingly innovative and confident. Whilst accepting that smart devices would now play a big part in the world of commercial and in particular domestic CI control, AMX was confident that there was still much to be said for a dedicated controller and set about creating a touch-screen family that would take its dedicated controllers to another level. The realisation of that ambition was the Modero X Series and the company has just revealed the latest incarnations from the line-up. Processing speed has been quadrupled with the latest Quad Core Processor

AMX says it has added significant improvements to upgrade the user experience, making it particularly suitable for kitchens, home theatres or home offices where the panoramic control surface can be used to manage systems throughout the home. Working from the premise that the line already has the optimum form factor, all the new improvements are internal. Raising the standard of touch-screen graphics and

Wall mounting and table top options are now offered

processing speed, AMX has fitted a new G5 Graphics Engine, which replaces the previous G4, to provide faster and smoother animations and transitions. Processing speed has been no less than quadrupled with the latest Quad Core Processor – which AMX claims is the fastest in the industry. The manufacturer says that the Modero X Series now launches and runs today’s applications quicker than ever, including multi-tasking with dedicated spaces and has enough processing grunt on tap to run more demanding applications to come in the future. Giving users fast access to the web or important files whilst relaxing at home was also a priority, so web browsing and document viewing is now instantly accessible. Modern forms of communication are also supported with HD video chat and video conferencing achievable at the touch of a button thanks to the integrated camera, whilst Bluetooth and NFC (Near Field Communications) give the range a full complement of wireless connectivity options. AMX says it has also made life easier for the integrator by adding the ability to deploy and update touch panel files from a network URL to simplify touch panel file management behind the scenes. Placement possibilities have also been increased with the development of two new mounting options, including a flush wall mount for a sleeker, in-wall look and a secure table mount. COME TOGETHER, RIGHT NOW

The living room comes to technological life with a Sony LCD TV, an Epson Projector and an Anthony Gallo A’Diva 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System

Dual-screen home cinemas are perfect for multi-use rooms where space is at a premium, but they come with challenges, which Couture Digital confronted then conquered in a recent high-end job.

Constraints for clients can be opportunities for installers. Take space. Space in central London is at a premium and even if you are a successful corporate financier for one of the leading banks there’s only so much of it and only so much you can fit into that space. Now take living areas. Living areas often have to be multiuse spaces where families come together to spend time,

entertain friends or charm potential clients, such are the limits on the floor areas and volumes that make up space. And here’s the opportunity: the dual-screen home cinema offers users the convenience of quickly flicking on the TV as background entertainment for parties. But when the partying is over the fun doesn’t stop. The kit doubles as a front projection system for an intimate yet immersive cinema experience, allowing users to enjoy feature-length films. Within this opportunity lies another opportunity: the dual-screen display is also a hit with clients in big country homes, up for a day of casual TV viewing followed by a night of cinema in the same room. “In either case the driver for dual-screen home cinema is user-centric,” says Nick Chung, who co-founded Couture Digital with David Hills and whose financier client tasked them with tooling up his apartment in Kensington. “It must provide an uncompromised and uncompromising experience, which has to be well suited to the lifestyle of the client.” Couture Digital is an award-winning technology consultancy in central London that specialises in custom audio, visual and automation systems. The seven-year-old company’s

international portfolio spans prestigious projects in the corporate and hospitality worlds, the more down-to-earth world of education and places of worship. The particular focus, however is on luxury residential property, so swanky Kensington is right up its street. As a full-service company, Couture Digital offers custom design, professional installation and certified programming services. It is a member of the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) and an authorised dealer of more than 100 leading specialist and non-specialist electronic brands; think Crestron, Lutron, Control4 and Kaleidescape. But the brand names are only as good as the team installing them, explains Nick: “Couture Digital recognises that although it is paramount to deliver our client’s feature wish lists, it is just as important to deliver an experience that meets their expectations. Usability must be intuitive and the system must be aesthetically cohesive with and enhance, the specified space. “Our design philosophy is to always conceal parts that are extraneous to the user experience, such as cables and system electronics boxes and to celebrate parts that the client interacts with, which include user controls, displays and loudspeakers, or that add to the overall aesthetic environment. Stealth and hidden cinema are simply levels of that design philosophy.” This can involve a subtle balancing act, says Nick. For some clients, wall space is reserved for art or architectural features and Couture Digital uses installation methods and specialist products that do not disturb that intention. ‘Savvy specialists’, he insists, are therefore specifying plaster-in speakers, recessed electric projector screens and motorised TV mounts to better serve their client’s needs. David adds: “In addition, an increasing number of manufacturers are producing well-designed products that are both high performance and mindful of interior design, such as the Artcoustic loudspeakers that we chose for this project. Whenever there is a site-specific challenge that cannot be resolved through existing products, Couture Digital designs custom solutions to meet the need.” This design philosophy boded well for the Kensington financier

Essential CASE STUDY and his pad. The catalyst for the upgrade was a broken old Pronto remote, but the client also wanted an upgrade that provided control from his iPad. Control4 is Couture Digital’s preferred choice for installs of this size, budget and functionality, so it was an easy decision to make. Control4 enables Couture Digital’s technical support team to remotely manage the system to offer quicker service, which was not available through Pronto. At the core of the system is a design drawn up a few years ago. The business enjoyed good results on similar projects using Yamaha AV receivers for multiroom AV. Product familiarity and a comprehensive list of RS232 commands was a winner. “It meant we could achieve great functionality out of affordable hardware,” says David. “The Artcoustic and Anthony Gallo loudspeakers are favourites. For full-range, on-wall speakers that solve the problem of ‘where are we going to hide those speakers?’ and that also become a central feature, Artcoustic are pioneers. They deliver in-room sonic fidelity with unparalleled design options. “Anthony Gallo’s compact, spherical speakers are also very easy to specify for a space. Their surprisingly wide frequency range as well as attractive design, colour and mounting options reflect a solid understanding of varying types of clients and interiors.” A large part of the job involved modernising the existing system and replacing intelix video distribution components with Wyrestorm HDBT technology. The biggest benefit is that the video signal is faster to switch and more reliable but also the provision of IR, RS232, Ethernet, and HDMI over a single twisted pair. Wyrestorm is good value for money and delivers consistent performance, David says. Audio sources available in all zones include Sky, Apple TV, radio and Blu-ray. The living room meanwhile comes to techno life with a Sony LCD TV, an Epson Projector and an Anthony Gallo A’Diva 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System. Also in the room is an Apple Bluetooth keyboard and Wyrestorm HDBaseT baluns, with a Mac Mini thrown in for good measure as an extra audio source. The bedroom has a Sony LCD TV, Artcoustic Diablo Monitor

speakers, Wyrestorm HDBaseT baluns; the bathroom has an Aquavision 19in TV, Anthony Gallo A’Diva speakers and Wyrestorm HDBaseT Baluns; while the kitchen cooks up audio-visual feast with ingredients including a Sony LCD TV, Anthony Gallo A’Diva Speakers, a Launch Port wall mount for iPad Mini and Wyrestorm HDBaseT Baluns. The head end includes Control4 HC-800, Sky+ HD Box, two firstgeneration Apple TV’s, a Mac Mini, and Intellix 4X4 HDMI Matrix, a Yamaha RX-V2065 AV Receiver, two Nuvo Power Amplifiers a Draytek Vigor 2830N Router and a Panasonic BDP Blu-ray player. Such installation overdrive came with its fair share of challenges, says David. “Upgrading to Control4 threw up the challenge of being constrained by the infrastructure, which was installed years before. This ultimately meant replacing old Intelix baluns with new Wyrestorm HDBaseT ones so we could transmit IR over the same CAT6 cable. The change from RF to IP control also meant wireless interference was an issue. “The building is in a terrace with a lot of neighbouring wireless networks, so we installed an extra access point and configured the network to the quietest spot on the spectrum using wireless mapping software. Challenges aside, The client likes a system he controls by iPad - the old plastic Pronto remote is dated against the build, high-resolution display and touch sensitivity of the iPad. “From the installers’ side, one of the most satisfying elements was getting three independent zones of multi-room audio, including one surround zone, from a single AV receiver with robust two-way control. The system now operates as though it had a bigger, more expensive multi-room system and the money saved allowed the client to reallocate his budget to TVs and speakers.” More information: Couture Digital +44 (0)800 1954825, www.couturedigital.com

Essential INTERVIEW

HEARING IS BELIEVING EI had a chat with Habitech’s new king of all things audio, experienced mastering studio engineer, Giovanni Scatola.

Having worked with some of the biggest names in the business, studio mastering engineer, Giovanni Scatola is bringing his ‘golden ears’ to the Habitech team

EI: You worked at the famous Metropolis Studios as a mastering engineer before Habitech. How did you get into mastering in the first place? Giovanni Scatola (GS): “When I was growing up I became obsessed with music and was determined to work within a studio environment. I wrote to every studio in the country week-in week-out looking for any job (even a tea boy) and eventually a mastering studio in Camden agreed to give me an interview. When I told them how meticulous I was about making my own mix tapes they thought I’d fit the bill as a trainee mastering engineer.” EI: What albums/projects have you worked on? GS: “I’ve mastered and re-mastered artists as diverse as Miles Davis, The Rolling Stones, New Order, INXS and The Levellers; albums such as ‘Kick’ by INXS; New Order’s ‘Technique’, and ‘Power, Corruption and Lies’; The Levellers’ ‘Levelling The Land’ and ‘Hello Pig’ – even Motorhead’s ‘Early Years’ fifteen disc box set.” EI: How were you introduced to Habitech? GS: “I’d started to become a bit disillusioned with the music industry (now being run by a computer company) and had been looking for a new challenge when I saw an opportunity at Habitech. I went to see Jonathan and the management team for a quick chat, which turned into a four hour meeting. I was impressed by the knowhow and passion in the company.” EI: What exactly will be your role at the company? GS: “I’m the audio product manager looking after all things audio. At the moment this means Sonance speakers predominantly, but there are lots of ideas in the pipeline, which involve better support for our dealers and installers when it comes to sound and cinema rooms, so watch this space! It’s a fascinating job in a fascinating industry. I’m pretty new to CI and learning fast, but I doubt that I’ll ever know it all as it’s ever changing.” EI: It’s a bit of jump from mastering engineer to custom installation. Do you see any similarities between the jobs? GS: “Actually there are more similarities than you may

46 Essential Install

imagine. Both jobs demand close attention to detail, involve a quest for the best sound and an ever moving target! In the studio I’d work with the client get the sound right. For every installation I’ll be trying to do the same.” EI: Can architectural speakers really compete with conventional boxes for sound quality? GS: “That’s a tough one. It all depends on the room acoustics and the client’s needs and wishes. For instance, a very expensive pair of floor-standing speakers at one end of the room will sound great, but it’s not going to be discreet. On the other hand, six or eight quality ceiling speakers will offer discreet audio and a better dispersion of sound throughout the whole room. I’ve been amazed at the performance of some of the higher-end in ceiling speakers – Sonance VP 46 for instance!” EI: Can you identify any trends around sound in the home? GS: “Sure, a lot of interior designers and architects have discovered our 4in square speakers. Rather than using the conventional 6in round offerings, small square speakers look great in a line along the ceiling and because they’re smaller they can put more of them in. Besides looking better they offer improved dispersion, which is invariably what the client is after.” EI: What mastering project are you most proud of and why? GS: “There are too many to pick out a favourite, but one of the highlights was re-mastering Elton John’s first two albums ‘Elton John’ and ‘Tumbleweed Connection’. I was lucky enough to get hold of the original analogue production master tapes, which felt like pieces of recording history. They were to be Deluxe Editions comprising of the original album on one disc and Elton’s demos of all the tracks on the other. I particularly loved working on the demo tracks because it was fascinating to hear the man and his piano playing stripped down versions of what were to be timeless tracks.” EI: What is your most memorable experience as a studio engineer? GS: “Again, too many to mention, but I’d always get a kick out of going to the bar at Metropolis Studios and seeing the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Elbow’s Guy Garvey breaking from a session and just chilling.” More Information: Habitech +44 (0)1420 540054 www.habitech.co.uk

Security Conscious

Also Inside A look at some of the latest CI friendly security solutions to enhance your projects

Essential SECURITY

SAFETY FIRST Security provision is one of the fasted growing sectors in CI with endusers ever more conscious of the steps that can be taken to protect their families and property. EI locks down some of the latest solutions.

Available from Cave Products, the Telecom Behnke range offers a whole range of access and security options

The days of two-wire analogue audio only door intercom systems are disappearing and a basic phone style handset on the wall with a door release button is no longer acceptable in the CI market. Customers increasingly demand integration with their home automation system with audio, video and access control over their in-wall control panels as well as remotely from smart-phones. Cave Products, the UK and Irish distributor of Telecom Behnke door entry solutions, has brought a fresh range of products to market which meet this demand. So far, Cave reports massive interest and take up from integrators who have been both pleased with the ease of installation and integration as well as the build quality and finishes available. Cave explains that from the Behnke family, the Series

option offers users the ability to answer calls from their door station securely from both within their Local Area Wireless Network as well as having the option to extend this function to outside of their home network (over 3G or WAN). Give Cave products a call to get the full SP on this quality and capable family of products.

50 product range has been a particular hit. The product’s aesthetics are designed to satisfy architects and developers, but the distributor says the technical capabilities of the products are going down equally well with installers. The Series 50 is a licence free, modular design which allows the installer the flexibility to add functions and configure the panel to meet customer requirements. It can include functions such as multiple call buttons, as well as keycode and proximity card access control. Cave says smart design, German build quality and reliable electronics within a keen price point, all add to the appeal. Cave explains that a further attraction is that Telecom Behnke doesn’t just offer off-the-shelf solutions, a large part of its business involves the manufacture of high-quality bespoke finishes, flexible enough to meet the tastes of the most design conscious client. Whilst integration with AMX, Crestron and Control4 remain at the top of the list for many of Cave Products customers, the company reports that the plug and play MyIntercom option is also proving to be a hit. This set up out of the box solution, which is simple to install has been designed specifically for use with smart phones and tablets by a free to download App. This

Pro-Vision underlines that the launch of IP related products still dominates the CCTV and access control market in the UK. The company says that in installations where ‘size matters’, there are two new super cameras from Pelco - a small micro dome and an internal box style camera that’s under 120mm long. Pro-Vision has just released a Pelco Spotlight publication which is available on its website which details the abilities of the new cameras. Pro Vision advises that a range that may well be suited for the custom install market is the comprehensive offering from LILIN. There are many camera options within this range from internal cameras to weather-proof external bullet style models. Along with the cameras, LILIN also offers a 16 channel Network Video Recorder (NVR) that provides full HD 1920 x 1080 HDMI output, iPad, iPhone and Android support plus the unit also supports multi-touch screen monitors – giving this high-end security device a real ‘user-friendly’ interface. LILIN products also integrate with Control4 automation and control solutions. In particular the manufacturer recently announced full integration with Control4 for its NVR Touch series courtesy of a dedicated driver written by Extra Vegetables. Control4’s SDDP automatically identifies and loads the correct driver for the NVR Touch, making installation virtually instantaneous. After highlighting and double-clicking the room in which the platform is installed, the driver instantly configures itself into the system. After making any optional settings, the HDMI output simply connects in Composer.

The NVR Touch from LILIN is now fully compatible with Control4

G-Tech is offering new ranges of IP and HD cameras from the Serage brand

Control4 users can view 16 channels of HD (1080P) IP video simultaneously at 25FPS via HDMI. A simple date and time search menu allows users to browse through the recordings on the NVR, which can then be exported to DVD or USB if required and if cameras connected to the NVR have pan, tilt or zoom capabilities, then users can control these from the driver. Pro Vision says that the LILIN ‘Boot-Camp’ IP training days are proving a real hit with installers providing practical ‘hands on’ IP video training and instruction. The free half day sessions help to make a smooth transition from analogue to IP video and by the end of the training, delegates will have set up an IP video system – successfully and confidently. Alltrade has available the full line-up of IC Realtime video surveillance equipment. Covering IP, analogue and hybrid systems, DVRs, NVRs and hybrid recorders and a wide range of fixed and PTZ cameras, the portfolio offers a complete CCTV solution. The range is also backed by Alltrade’s free planning service. “Video surveillance and CCTV equipment has become an increasingly important facet of integrated CI installs,” says Steve Simper, MD of Alltrade. “The technology has moved on and with the advent of affordable IP-based and hybrid systems, the image quality, flexibility and reliability of CCTV systems has increased dramatically.” For new IP-based surveillance system installations, IC Realtime’s entry-level Breeze HD NVR offers four-channel recording with built in four-port PoE switch, dual-core processor power and plug and play set up in less than two minutes. The device supports up to 25FPS at 1080 resolution on all channels. A range of dedicated IP cameras are also available from the ICIP D1300 vandal proof dome to the flagship ICIP-2000 PTZ hybrid camera. The latter is a 2MP full-HD camera with 16x digital zoom, H.264 and dualstream encoding and JPEG image capture. Its IR illumination range is up-to 100m and it is IP66 rated for all environments. The products also offer IR, RS2323 and Network protocols and features such as push notifications for CCTV via smartphone App, multi-view of up to 16 feeds on a tablet, remote playback and integration of remote PTZ controls into the system. The latest solutions from the Serage brand (available from G-Tech) include new HD-SDI and IP camera ranges. The IP family offers a big range of cameras for internal and external use offering the key features of full HD at 1080p, Power over Ethernet, App for smartphone/tablet integration and ONVIF compatibility for better system integration. The company is able to assist with training sessions and system design as

well as full technical support including remote config and pre-configured systems. The HD-SDI family offers enhanced imaging functionality including defogging and low-light settings as well as the same App control as the IP versions and technical support packages. KNX systems (available with the support of Ivory Egg) provide loads of possibilities for the integration of security. Whilst a standalone security system is generally advised due to the strict regulations regarding the installation, functionality and monitoring, there is no reason KNX cannot be used to integrate the system further into a whole building automation set up. Whilst having the lights come on when the alarm goes off is fairly common, Ivory Egg suggests, why not open all the blinds at the same time, or use the window contacts from the alarm system to set back the heating system. Knowing when the building is unoccupied from the alarm system can trigger a wide range of protection actions: Set back the heating, tilt the blinds to prevent solar gain, turn off non critical sockets, start occupancy simulation and start monitoring the water and gas meters for any consumption indicating leaks. All of this is possible via one interface to one system. Also available from Ivory Egg, the Gira Homeserver or standalone KNX devices can offer complex occupancy simulation. The system records the normal behaviour of the occupant, then replays it back for convincing simulation. These products are intelligent enough to only record the light circuits that are visible from the outside including blinds as well. Gira can also provide options for keyless access including its Fingerprint Reader, which can deliver secure access to a whole property, a garden or room (such as a porch) with just a single finger touch. The unit can be combined with a KNX system for lights to come on or secondary doors to open automatically. The company’s numeric keypads can define different levels of access with different codes. One code for the owner, one code for a service engineer or courier, ect. It is also possible to set up a limited time access under a specific code. Key Fob readers provide another option which delivers access based on proximity, particularly useful if the owner is struggling with bags, children or both. If installers are interested in learning more about the Gira Homeserver or any of the options offered by Ivory Egg, email training@ivoryegg.co.uk to enquire about the next training dates. Recent updates to the Elan g! platform (available from Invision) mean integration with Panasonic IP cameras, Axis IP cameras and IP video servers is now possible as it is compatibility with Vivotek IP cameras and IP video servers. RTI, also available from Invision, has inbuilt drivers for full integration with Panasonic, Snap AV, IC Realtime, Vivotek and Axis CCTV cameras. This includes pan, tilt and zoom functions. RTI also has a Generic MJPEG camera viewer that allows RTI to view any IP camera feed that is in MJPG format and display the images on the user interface. The security division of Midwich continues to expand its portfolio after agreeing a new partnership with integrated security solutions manufacturer TDSi. Manufacturer of integrated access control and security solutions, the firm offers an extensive range of readers, controllers and software systems. Mark Thomas, Director at Midwich Security says: “We are always looking to bolster our portfolio with products and services that bring genuine benefit to the industry and, with TDSi, we can now supply the very latest integrated access control solutions to add to our comprehensive security offering. TDSi manufactures the full spectrum in access control solutions – from entry level door systems to number plate recognition systems that can automatically log you into your computer on arrival into the company car park. Security in the corporate world is becoming increasingly efficient as technologies combine and we are delighted to welcome TDSi to the Midwich stable where we confidently look forward to continued mutual success.” Available from Aldous Systems, Leviton Security and Automation (formerly HAI by Leviton) offers a number of security conscious features including closing systems down

when the alarm is armed to switching them back on again when the alarm is switched off. Additionally the system can use security related PIR sensors to control other functions such as lights. To complement the security functionality, conventional coax based CCTV cameras and IP based cameras can be integrated into the system allowing full access to the cameras from the touchscreens and the iPhone/iPad and Android Apps. High resolution IP cameras that serve MJPEG are available from Channel Vision via Aldous Systems, or a 1 or 4 port camera server can be used with conventional CCTV cameras. The camera servers also have loop through connections allowing the cameras to easily be connected to a Channel Vision DVR for recording and playback. Aldous Systems offers installer training including e-learning allowing installers to be trained on the Leviton product line from the comfort of their home or office followed up by classroom based hands on training. Additionally Aldous Systems offers support in designing your system and on-site support if needed.

Essential GENESIS

THE INVISIBLE MAN!

Steve Olszewski, vice president of Stealth Acoustics, offers his views on what installers should look for in an invisible speaker.

Hidden speakers can now achieve the look and performance customers are looking for

54 Essential Install

Invisible speakers can make a powerful aesthetic statement and run the gamut in price and performance, but not all technologies utilised are the same. Neither is the sound result, with some devices reproducing arguably audiophile quality and full spectrum sound and others performing much less well. Still, there are common elements to all invisible speakers (and a few key differentiators). Common to virtually all invisible speakers is the general method of taking electro-mechanical audio motors and using these devices to actuate a flat surface membrane with vibrations to create sound. Common also is the ability to mount invisible speakers into walls or ceilings. Traditional speakers are typically ‘full-range’ devices,

Since all invisibles install in a somewhat similar fashion, these differences boil down to four essential elements; component and face material selection, frequency response, sound quality and price. Component and face materials vary widely between invisible speakers. Some use a single motor; some use multiple motors, whilst the best use motors and cone woofers run through a traditional crossover, just like regular speakers. The best face materials have a pleasing natural resonance, are extremely durable and immune to moisture from paint, finishing materials or the environment. Frequency response is measurable and if it gets down into the 35Hz range or below and up to the 18kHz range with a reasonably flat response, the speaker has the basics covered (just read the spec’s carefully).

albeit with some limitations allowed in response regarding human hearing abilities, which are generally understood to be between 20Hz and 20kilohertz. Output matters as well, with good speakers being able to reach over 100dB without sacrificing clarity or response. Not all visible speakers faithfully reproduce full range sound or provide high output, nor do all invisible speakers, but getting the best available invisible speaker within your budget is important. Natural bass extension and high frequency response, if both are properly balanced in the speaker, will allow most listeners to enjoy the content without complaint that ‘something is missing’. Reaching high SPL’s of clean output (typically measured at one metre from the device) is also desirable, as the speaker components will be under less stress at lower volumes and be able to handle peaks more easily. Whilst almost any invisible speaker can reproduce the range of a violin, even non-critical listeners appreciate solid bass response that drives emotion or provides impact. Lacking such bass response, a speaker, invisible or not, may not be as well received as one that produces real bass down to about 35Hz. Assuming that the remaining sound registers are reasonably well presented up to about 18kHz, most listeners will be satisfied when hearing to a wide range of content. Adding invisible subwoofers into the mix can extend response down into the sub-bass region for even greater impact and realism, but the invisibles with cone woofers typically need subs only for extremely low sounds. So what are the key differences with invisible speakers?

If a speaker is lacking in meeting these basic response parameters, some listeners after using the speaker for a while may feel something is missing or not like the sound of the device in general. Sound quality itself is somewhat more of a subjective consideration than what a response curve will imply - you must really listen to a speaker carefully to understand the actual quality to your ears as listening is a mental process, not a physical one. Finally there is price. You can pay more for a less capable speaker, invisible or not, but this seems to be especially true with invisible speakers. So, if you’re considering invisible speakers in your project, take the time for a listening demo and read the specs. Play full range music with a strong bass output and maybe some movie clips with explosions, or perhaps something orchestral with tympani, double bass elements and cymbals to expose the response of the speaker. Even better, hit the dance music and crank it up – that’s where powerful speakers hold up and weaker ones fail apart. Ask how the speakers are constructed and how they make sound, paying close attention to quality of build and looking for typical speaker components like cone woofers, crossover networks and protection circuits. In the end, a speaker is a speaker, they all couple mechanical vibration to air to make sound and the best invisible speakers use components similar to visible speakers, just in a more creative – and hidden – manner. Essential COMMENT

HOT STUFF

Each month CEDIA members provide their insight into some of the key issues installers need to be concerned with. This month, Kriss Hogg of Konnectiv provides his views on how to get the most from HVAC. The days of Custom Installation are numbered. Today, it’s no longer good enough to just offer home cinemas, multiroom audio and a bit of control. Clients are now demanding full integration and control of all the systems in their homes, to the point where CI now really should mean Custom Integration. The biggest area of interest we now see from clients is in control of their heating and climate controls. Don’t be fooled into thinking that air-conditioning is not used in the UK, we are now seeing a greater take up of cooling systems in new builds. The driver for this control tends to be the client’s ambition for greater control and flexibility, usually coming from their desire to run these systems more efficiently. The opportunity for us as an integrator is that we can deliver a truly integrated climate control system for a client, one that will actively work to reduce their bills as well as giving them the ability to manage their heating systems when away from the house. This external access seems to be the biggest selling point with heating control. I also believe that, as the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes becomes ever more entrenched in building legislation, we will see heating controls become subject to these requirements, just as lighting control is now mentioned in them. So, it’s a short sighted integrator who ignores the massive potential that integration of the HVAC and environmental controls in a system, it gives you a real selling advantage over a competitor who ignores it and an opportunity to make some real margin.

Kris says a product is coming that will chance HVAC integration forever

These systems tend to use a commercial communications protocol, such as, LON or BACNet. It seems they have never heard of IP or even RS232. In addition, there are very few options available for temperature sensing and you soon realise that designing a succinct and reliable climate control system can be a real nightmare. Don’t worry though, help is at hand. You can go down the route of using a propriety heating control system from one of the very few manufacturers who make integrated systems, or find little boxes that convert HVAC communications protocols into IP or RS232. Better yet, one controls company has a controller with BACnet already built in, so expect the other control guys to follow suit very soon. As for thermostats, there are very few IP connected units on the market right now. However, something is coming that will change the whole market. I don’t know how many of you have heard of the Nest Thermostat. It’s a very cool Internet connected device, currently only available in the US, but according to their website, it is in testing of the UK right now and will be coming to the UK in the near future. This unit is going to explode the interest in control of heating and cooling in private houses. So, no matter how much of an opportunity you think being able to offer HVAC integration will offer you, the interest level and profit potential that this device will bring is going to change the game for climate control systems. My advice to you is simple. If you haven’t already started investigating climate control systems, do so, right now and without delay and be ready for a revolution that will bring profitable business to your door. It all sounds so easy? Well, not quite

HVAC is a hot topic in the CI industry right now

You see the biggest problem is that nearly all the heating and air-conditioning manufacturers have no clue about our industry and, more importantly, have no in-built way of allowing an automation controller to connect and easily control it.

Essential THE MULTI-ROOM COMPANY

OUT OF THE BOX, IN TO THE HOME The Multi-Room Company offers complete integrated solutions and costing packages to help installers cover every eventuality including the dreaded ‘ballpark’ bombshell from customers

Multi-Room technical sales manager for Key Digital products Ben Hillman aims to make life easier for timepoor installers and, ultimately, end users

58 Essential Install

Most, if not all of us have been to this dark place when costing a job, insists Ben Hillman. The technical sales manager at The Multi-Room Company knows only too well how tricky it can be for the installer to quickly tot up costing advice. A tricky situation can become dangerous territory indeed when the customer innocently drops the dreaded question: ‘what sort of ballpark figure are we talking about?’ closely followed by ‘I won’t, of course, hold you to it.’ Of course not. “The problem is,” explains Ben, “that by answering, the installer sets the customer’s expectation. The easy way to lose jobs is to put in the quote that’s way different from the verbal estimate. What’s needed is a package, which offers a ballpark answer that is robust and one where it is possible to tell the client what the system includes so there are no nasty surprises.” There are no nasty surprises at The Multi-Room Company in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, he says. It has worked with many customers for more than 10 years and with big suppliers just as long. Putting customers in control and making life easy for time-poor installers is a priority for the company, with a welter of pre-configured AV distribution and control packages for different size projects. The business recently added to its existing range of products from brands such as Russound, Leviton, Centralite and Atlantic Technology, with the class-leading HD distribution brand, Key Digital and racks and mounts from Sanus. The addition of Key Digital brings HD matrix switching and distribution solutions to the installer and provides access to the comprehensive Compass iPad control system. Ben says: “We’ve designed complete solutions covering what homeowners want right now – multimedia systems, the best in audio and video distribution and the newest control technology – with a view to making selection of products and customer job quotations so much simpler

for installers. We are providing complete integrated solutions that are pretty well ‘out of the box’. “We use high-quality, cost-effective products to cover all the end user’s automation requirements in the home. This ranges from multi-room AV and lighting control, to the ability to control heating, ventilation and security. We’ve even thought of the network infrastructure requirements and are including products from our Leviton brand. “The aim really is to make life as easy as possible, while giving the installers the confidence they are supplying high quality products from respected brands and retaining a good margin for themselves,” explains Ben. “Each package is modular in its nature to cater for different size houses and different user requirements.” By this Ben means anything from a two-bedroom apartment to an eight-bedroom luxury house. The installer can pick from a list of pre-selected products that will suit each installation and cover the required applications: multiroom audio, HD video distribution, home cinema and lighting control. Each project can be installed with a solution in the form of the Key Digital Compass Control system. The packages, Ben insists, enable installers to give quick and accurate costing advice to their clients and in the process avoid falling victim to that dreaded question about ballparks. Installers also enjoy the added boost to confidence that they are offering excellent products. Offering top-quality kit from a host of big names to UK installers is major calling card of the Multi-Room Company, Ben says. “Making the good-value Russound product available to the UK installer base has been the bedrock on which we have built our business. Add in CentraLite lighting control solutions, THXcertified Atlantic Technology speakers, home cinema products from Yamaha and Onkyo and it is easy to see why the company is considered a ‘one stop shop’ by many of its customers. “They can purchase a seamless, integrated system with no compromise on quality, despite the price being considerably lower than other systems. Russound equipment provides the best bang for your buck from their distribution controllers, amplifiers and in-ceiling/wall speakers and also offer seamless integration with Compass.” But even if an installer is solely using Russound and

the client doesn’t want a full control system, they can still add the best in high definition video by using the Myro Bridge, says Ben. This little box provides integration with Key Digital’s HD matrix switchers and can be controlled by using the Russound App, which is a multi-room audio/video controller or the elegant Russound keypads. Lighting control from Centralite is a flexible and affordable high-quality lighting system. Smart-looking UK-designed keypads provide an element of luxury and it integrates with Key Digital’s Compass Control system. Compass is powerful as a control system because it is very strong in the area of integration with third party products. Thanks to the vast databases of IR, RS232 and IP control codes and a dedicated team at Key Digital who write code for new products, Compass is constantly updated with the products it is designed to interface with. If a code doesn’t exist, the Key Digital team can create it or the installer themselves by using the database managers. Ben says: “Using Compass with Key Digital as the HD distribution platform is a perfect match, since it provides seamless integration and expansion for the control system. Many of the Key Digital distribution products have control matrixing built in – they don’t just have a layer of HD matrix switching, but also another layer of control routing and matrixing, making it very flexible.” Major installations such as the Atlanta History Museum have chosen Compass Control as their preferred solution and this has taken control to more advanced levels than ever before, insists the museum’s president of sound design and innovation, Aaron Catlin. This sort of project could

Using Compass with Key Digital as the HD distribution platform is a perfect match as it provides seamless integration and expansion for the control system

provide rich pickings for installers, especially with the Key Digital offering, reckons Ben. “This can open up new markets like education, retail and leisure to the installers. Compass is so much more manageable for the installer than more expensive and complicated systems. For small companies or projects, there isn’t the need for specialist programmers, approval stages, translation into code and the many other steps required before the system is up and running. “The installer can use the intuitive and powerful software to cut out a lot of stages and keep control in their hands. Of course this doesn’t mean the specialists can’t use Compass, they can do even more with it on bespoke projects for high-end clients. The system is so flexible it can be used by different people at different levels. “This can go from a simple home cinema project requiring control in one zone, up to comprehensive bespoke systems within luxury villas that make using the multiple systems in the property intuitive and easy. Installers who previously wouldn’t have considered offering high-end control because of the complexity and cost can now do so.” The Multi-Room Company also has an answer for projects that require invisible loudspeakers, Ben explains. Revolution Acoustics is a product that consists of two transducers and a dedicated amplifier. Mounted behind or on any surface, the sound quality from this new digital signal processing controlled transducer package is ‘simply stunning’, insists Ben. Finishing off the packages from the company, the recent addition of Sanus products now means any The recent addition of Sanus products equipment racking means any racking and TV wall-bracket and TV wall bracket requirements are covered requirements are covered. Some 13 years since the business was founded, Ben says it can now claim true one-stop-shop status for the UK installer market through easy-to-understand packages that save time and cost and help installers win business. WINTER WONDER LAND

Wondering how to achieve integration with today’s or even yesterday’s HVAC and heating systems? then wonder no more, as EI presents the companies that can help. Intelligent Controls (UK), one of the trailblazers of the sector, is proudly celebrating 10 years helping to integrate environmental control into house automation projects using the North Building Technologies platform. North products allow disparate building controls systems to communicate and the platform can be of major importance in allowing sometimes uncooperative and closed environmental and HVAC systems to talk to the rest of a whole house automation project. Intelligent Controls director John Corbin, says: “As an example, a BMS from late 90’s early 2000’s may be a premium branded and internally closed proprietary protocol. The manufacturer will say we are open protocol, as we offer LON, Modbus and BacNet TCP integration options on the interface of the BMS controller. Many AC interfaces are fixed function interfaces, so their internal closed nature is not as important to the integrator as it does not alter. We can expect this to function consistently, such as Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric or Toshiba. “A true open system is BacNet. On the front it’s a standard and there are many ‘open’ standards. BacNet is a discoverable system, so no special tools there. Then there is BacNet MS/TP the RS485 version, which requires a BacNet router acting as a slave. Then there is the requirement for a master to bring them together. The North System (for which we are North Approved Systems Partners, NASP) is both master and slave, at the same time. We can bind BacNet slaves together, or be a master to a slave per se.” John explains: “Because the North system is open, all the drivers are correctly developed and licensed to the closed and open protocols of the specific manufacturers. As a NASP we have the full product support for current old and new drivers. The North commander is a great device. We can add an AG150 driver for direct access to the Mitsubishi Electric system and Zip driver for boiler control and UFH control, with a RS232 driver for AV integration or enable BacNet TCP master and/or slave for those who want the open aspect of for the BMS integration. “As we celebrate our ten years, thank you to all our customers and please call to ask about integration and how we can help save some time. We do the liaison for you and ensure the BMS and HVAC installer is aware of the need for his product to interface with the rest of the project and we ensure we extract the pertinent information to allow this to happen. All we ask is the system is complete and signed off and witnessed as operational, then interface can begin.” A platform that is embracing the need for HVAC integration is Savant (available from RGB Communications). David Webster, CTO, RGB Communications, says: “Savant’s complete suite of software and hardware control solutions for the connected home and commercial applications has more than 50 profiles for controlling HVAC

devices including: single or multiple room thermostats individually via their proprietary bus, heating and cooling systems and fully fledged building management systems which include those with direct BacNET over IP communication. “Savant’s control system can easily and simply meet end users’ HVAC requirements to control their desired temperature and enables the setting of separate heating and cooling set points for each zone and time of day via customisable user interfaces. With Savant it is also possible to enable the pre-setting of fan speeds for AC and to determine which heat sources should be used (UFH/Radiator) for day, night or holiday modes.” David adds: “In order to ensure that RGB Comms is able to assist its Savant Accredited Dealers with controlling an extensive and broad range of HVAC control systems frequently used in the UK, it is working with a leading industry solution provider to understand how its solution can be used to extend the power of Savant’s control system. RGB plans to provide training courses for its Savant Accredited Dealers on the integration of Savant’s control system with this solution which will allow them to close more high end HVAC control business.” Another stalwart of the sector providing control and integration of heating and HVAC systems, is Sensible Heat. Dave Robinson, managing director at the company says: “Another busy year at Sensible Heat has seen the usual mix of lots of relatively straightforward HVAC systems interspersed with a few really complex projects. One recurring theme this year has been the similar comments of custom installers who have used our systems in conjunction with the more pre-configured control systems like Control4. Many of them have commented on how surprised they were by how smoothly and simply the integration with heating and cooling was achieved, sometimes the whole commissioning process has been completed in one day.” Dave says: “We’re not surprised by this, because our modular heating controls and standard aircon interfaces can be commissioned and tested stand-alone and then simply integrated using our pre-written drivers, the integration process should be pretty simple, but clearly this isn’t their experience with some other HVAC products. “We also have introduced a couple of new user interfaces; in fact one of them, the Zip Display, isn’t really new at all, it has been available for several years, but this year we’ve found an increasing number of applications for it. We’ve found some projects where, although there may be an overall touch-screen control system installed, there is a requirement in some areas for some simple in-wall displays to control just the heating and cooling systems – maybe in bedrooms three and four, or guest rooms.” Dave explains: “Sometimes this is because the touch-

screen system is being restricted to only the AV zones and principle rooms, or maybe the system is being implemented with roaming iPads and there is a requirement for a fixed, in-wall way of controlling the HVAC. Whatever the reason, the Zip display gives an ideal way of controlling heating and cooling from a single interface, it is a compact, discreet device which fits into a standard UK 2-gang backbox and can be supplied with screwless plates in custom finishes. “The other new user interface is an extension to the Hometronic range called EvoTouch Zoning Manager. As the name implies, this has a slick touchscreen interface and is a ‘little brother’ to the existing Hometronic Manager and because it supports eight heating zones (vs 16 zones of the Hometronic Manager) is particularly useful for the smaller property, apartments etc, or as an independent user interface for part of a larger property. “You can mix and match Hometronic Manager and EvoTouch in a single installation as required. Just like the Hometronic Manager, the Evotouch works with the standard Hometronic peripherals and is fully supported by both our WebManager and Web Interface products, so works with all our existing range of drivers for Crestron, Control4, RTI, Savant, etc.” Another company playing its part is 2 Save Energy Ltd, manufacturer of the OWL family of products, which has just introduced a new range of smart heating controls. Suitable for new and retrofit installations, the system allows home owners to control their heating and hot water settings from any PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone. The company is keen to work with installers to promote this new platform as David McTurk, managing director of 2 Save Energy Ltd, says: “You could say that the programming and control of domestic heating and hot water has finally caught up with the Internet Age. With any Internet connection, home owners can login to OWL’s proprietary software platform. They can then control and adjust their heating and hot water settings with a clear, easy-to-use web dashboard. There are numerous benefits of such an Internet based system to the home owner: Heading home early? – turn the heating on before setting off from work or turning the heating and hot water on from wherever they are on holiday, no more returning home to a cold house. Changing heating and hot water settings from a smartphone – wherever they happen to be, staying away from home longer – delaying the heating Heatmiser is finding many fans in the CI sector by offering its protocols up for integration

coming on so no energy is wasted.” The company says using the system can cut energy usage by up to 20% with the system paying for itself in as little as 12 months. There are two systems to choose from: one specifically designed for combi boilers and the other for conventional systems. With a combi boiler system, the home owner will have a compact, simple and stylish room sensor that replaces their existing room thermostat. This provides simple heating control with three push-button settings – Comfort, Standby and Away. It talks to the OWL Intuition dashboard via the Network OWL Gateway, which is plugged into the Internet router. Homeowners can then access and use the dashboard from any web enabled device. This is OWL Intuition-c (or Intuition-cw for wireless installations). For conventional heating systems, the home owner has both the room sensor (for heating) and an additional Tank Sensor for hot water control. This is OWL Intuition-h. The company says both systems come with comprehensive and easy-to-follow installation instructions and a downloadable home owner user guide too. Heatmiser offers its networked heating system which is often integrated into third-party control platforms such as Control4 and Crestron. Company director, Martyn Kay, explains: “Our products are very popular in multi zone underfloor and radiator heating systems and we recognise in these situations it is likely the client will require other forms of home automation. Because our protocol is freely available on our website, third party companies have taken this and created their own custom modules. One company that is very active in this field is Extra Vegetables.” “A summary of our system is that we offer a selection of thermostats to cater for the system requirements. These may be models designed for bedrooms and en-suite, hot water and those with remote sensors for when the client doesn’t want to see a thermostat. Our Touchpad allows for central control in the home and the Netmonitor gives web and App (iOS And Android). Those clients looking to use the Control4 keypads can interface with our products with the custom module from Control4.” As the company allows access to its protocol some really inventive applications are occurring out in the field, with one recent example using Siri to control Heatmiser via a Raspberry Pi. Martyn adds that the company is almost at the end of a new system design, to be launched early next year. This system uses the JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) open standard with aim of simplifying integration even further. Talking of Extra Vegetables, mentioned earlier by Martyn, Jane

Scotland, commercial director for the company confirms that its work on the Heatmiser system is finding many fans. Jane says: “The Extra Vegetables Heatmiser integration with Control4 is a popular option with integrators as it provides two-way integration with one of the UK’s most popular heating systems. Integration is available with both the UH-1 underfloor heating system and with the retro-fit Heatmiser Wi-Fi thermostats. “For customers who want to integrate cooling as well, Extra Vegetables have a CoolMaster Gateway Driver (bridge module product connecting HVAC systems to a network) and Thermostat Controller driver that enable control of both Heatmiser and VRV cooling systems.” Jane adds: “It’s fair to say that most custom installers don’t have much experience of HVAC and are wary about getting involved. The beauty of the integration is that the Heatmiser system is installed by the specialist heating engineer in exactly the same way as any other Heatmiser system. The integration with Control4 only needs to be added once the heating system is fully commissioned and working. This provides a useful demarcation in projects and means that integrators aren’t taking responsibility for the whole HVAC installation. “The Heatmiser integration enables a customer to change the set-point of a room and set a schedule from a Control4 touch-panel, iOS App or OSD and remotely. Control4’s Access Anywhere is a convenient option, especially for customers who travel or are away from home for extended periods.” The Heatmiser, CoolMaster and Thermostat Controller drivers are all available to authorised Control4 dealers from the Extra Vegetables website. The CoolMaster family offers a whole range of versatile bridge devices that connect many of the major aircon brands including Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu up to networks via RS232 or USB enabled devices allowing them to be integrated and controlled by third party systems. The products are available in the UK via Tenways Engineering and a recent development is that the RTI platform (available from Invision UK) has added a two-way driver that communicates via RS232 to give feedback and control on the

Hi ENER-G ENER-G intelligent HVAC controls provide another option for integrated and intuitive home automation system control. The company’s platform can be integrated with Control4, AMX and Crestron enabling environmental control to sit on the same device and interface as the rest of the house controls or remotely via Apps or the Internet. ENER-G Controls offers a full design, supply and commissioning service for all intelligent heating and airconditioning projects, with the company’s engineers liaising closely with plumbers, electrical designers and contractors, to provide a seamless service. Advanced home control systems, designed and manufactured by ENER-G in the UK, are designed to provide optimum control of all heating, cooling, hot water, air humidity offering multi-room/zone controls using discrete sensors and controls as well as full after sales support, including GSM remote monitoring and diagnosis of faults, backed by maintenance support. The company also points out that many heating and air conditioning systems are controlled separately, which can cause mis-setting of the two systems and result in the heating system fighting with the cooling system. ENER-G uses a single sensor and single user interface to control both systems. As such, More information:

users specify the temperature and timings and the system decides whether heating, cooling, or no action is required. Through continuous control, ENER-G’s technologies use discrete thimble sensors - rather than traditional mechanical thermostatic valves (TVRs) to measure room temperature. An algorithm calculates the precise amount of heat or cooling needed to keep the room at the required temperature. By learning the thermal characteristics of each room in a house and taking into account the outside temperature, the optimum start feature works out when to turn on and off heating so that the living space is always the ideal temperature. Alternatively, an ability to override zone controllers provides maximum flexibility. The weather compensation feature ensures that water temperature is only as hot as is necessary. Frost protection and condensation protection features are also built in. The manufacturer says the increasing popularity of underfloor heating, which requires a zoned, room-byroom approach to heating is a more challenging to control than ordinary radiators. ENER-G’s approach allows the thermo-electric actuators supplied by the underfloor heating manufacturer to be retained. Thermostats, time-clocks and wiring centres can be deleted and replaced with thimble sensors for wall mounting, together with a small ‘smartBox’ control panel mounted next to the manifold. The modular controls interface with a variety of modern HVAC equipment - from ground source heat pumps - to solar panels, air conditioning or pool heating. Advanced features enable the controls to be programmed to provide optimum conditions when rooms are occupied or unoccupied. ENER-G’s web based control systems can be managed using a standard Internet browser from anywhere in the world, enabling adjustments to be made on times of occupation or temperature set points, as required. Each installation is fitted with a GSM modem, which enables ENER-G to directly connect to the system to check performance and diagnose faults. Another option which may be coming to the UK (highlighted in this issue by Kris Hogg on page 57) is called NEST. Apparently being tested in the UK and currently available in the US, NEST offers a series of intelligent webenabled thermostats that quickly learn the temperature requirements of a building and different zones in that building, quickly creating an automated and optimum heating profile for each area. The system can also detect when no-one is home and switch to away mode and the system can be fully accessed and controlled via its own App. EI will naturally keep you informed if this product does indeed come to the UK. www.tenways.co.uk

Essential DRAPER GROUP

THE MIGHTY THOR WHIPS UP A STORM

The new Thor range of screens offers power, support and flexibility

Launched at the Midwich Technology Exposed event and available from the Draper Group is a new family of projection screens from the Euroscreen brand. Named Valhalla after the mythical home of the Norse gods, the first product grouping to come out of the project is named Thor after the hammer-wielding god associated with thunder, lightning, fertility and strength. A considerable amount of R&D hours has gone into this product grouping providing a range of electrical projection screens from 250 - 450cm in width. Features offered with the range include a multi-functional Euroscreen Control Box, adjustable inner bracket for easy level adjustment on some models and an attractive and unobtrusive aluminium case. The multi-functional Control Box is unified with the case and provides a control receiver with five options; RF, IR, dry contact/contact closure, 12V trigger or RS232 function. To operate the screen, an additional choice of preferred control trigger device must be chosen. The inner bracket allows adjustment of the screen meaning installers should be able to avoid unlevelled bottom dowels and as standard, wall brackets and flexible mounting brackets for ceiling installation are included. Optional recessed ceiling brackets are also available and the case is equipped with wall channel-fixed fitting for easy installation and is finished in a contemporary white colour with matching aluminium bottom dowel. Thor is available in two versions; as non-tensioned or tensioned, which come in a variety of screen surfaces. The Tab Tension models are offered in pliable surfaces such as the high contrast ReAct 2.1, matt white FlexWhite and FlexRear surface for rear projection. The tensioning function makes it possible to adjust the flatness of the surface and therefore provides a flat viewing surface for the life of the product. The non-tensioned models come with the screen surface options of the matt white Arctiq, the elastic matt white FlexWhite and the environment-friendly all white Xpert surface. Thor is offered in a wide range of standard sizes and several projection formats, with or without black borders. Draper explains that when a projection format with black borders is required, a matt true black border is welded onto the screen surface for an effective framework to the projected image.

A busy year ahead Draper will also be highlighting several other key opportunities from its ranges this year. Towards the end of this year, Draper’s FlexShade window shades will be given a higher profile in the UK market, offering installers the opportunity to deliver the light/heat reflecting qualities and environmental advantages offered by the range. Controlling the amount of light into a building enables clients to save money on lighting and environmental controls with the motorised screens automatically adjusting to

compensate for the changing shade requirements throughout the day. Each FlexShade product is built to order with fabric, hardware and operating mechanisms specified to satisfy functional and aesthetic criteria. Options include bead chain clutch, crank, spring roller and motorised roller-operated shades all in a wide choice of colours and fabrics from woven for protection from heat, glare and UV rays, while maintaining the view, to soft translucent textiles offering designer appeal, to opaque fabrics that eliminate all visible light. All fabrics are fire retardant. Another product receiving a push this year is the company’s choice of motorised Video Conferencing Solutions. The product family offers a choice of six different video conferencing camera lifts to reveal, conceal and support cameras for placement behind a rear projection screen, within conference room furniture, on-wall mounting or for the ultimate in concealed solutions mounting into one of three Draper ceiling recessed projector lifts. Draper also offers

a range of choices for Video Conferencing Backgrounds for location and corporate identity purposes which deliver a wide choice of mounting and surface options. Also showcased this year will be the capabilities of the Evoko Room Manager concept manufactured by SMS (also part of the Draper Group). Using recently developed software, organisations can more effectively manage and take advantage of the information contained within its meeting patterns. Companies are able to gain an overview of and analyse detailed statistics of meeting habits to optimise the use of resources. Operated over the platform’s range of control screens, the system is also fully accesible from a computer delivering companies a new kind of decisionmaking support. Get in touch directly with Draper to get full details on how the company’s wide choice of solutions can enhance your product and functionality portfolio. NEW PRODUCTS A CANDY STORE OF CI CENTRIC KIT AV BUDDY PRO BUDDIES UP TO INSTALLERS AV Buddy Pro for the iPad has easy-tounderstand descriptions of AV equipment

An advanced training tool with easy-to-understand descriptions of AV equipment has been launched to help staff install equipment. The AV Buddy Pro (AVBP) is an iPad version of the already available AV Buddy for the iPhone. But where the latter is more of a quickfix mobile solution, AVBP is a complete tool offering education, training and other functions. AVBP from Sydney-based certified technology specialist Christopher Wright includes site survey forms with the ability to take and insert photos. Once completed, forms can be emailed or printed. FLAGSHIP SPEAKER HITS THE WAVES

CM10 has 50% more bass driver area than CM9, with three drivers rather than two

Bowers & Wilkins has launched a flagship model for the CM Series of loudspeakers with a new tweeter design, a decoupled FST midrange and three bass drivers for better performance. CM10 is the first model in the CM Series to feature tweeter-on-top configuration to aid imaging and dispersion. The aluminium tweeter double-dome is another first for the series and pushes up the break-up frequency from the standard dome’s 30kHz to 38kHz. This makes the tweeter purer and more piston-like, resulting in sharper clarity and control. Moving the tweeter to the top of the cabinet and relocating FST midrange drive units gives the CM10 50% more bass driver area than CM9, with three drivers rather than two. Decoupling the CM10’s Kevlar FST driver from the rest of the cabinet makes the listener less aware of the position of the loudspeaker, while moving the midrange driver closer to the top of the cabinet improves upward dispersion and increases the sense of airiness. Compared to CM9, CM10 plays louder, has a more extended bass, better imaging and lower distortion and colouration. Finishes include rosenut or wengé veneers or black gloss or satin white painted finishes. More information: Bowers & Wilkins +44 (0)1903 221500 www.bowers-wilkins.com

returned from site, 27 different calculators can help design the customer’s project. Christopher says: “Find out how bright your projector should be with the lumens-required calculator or the dimensions of a 16:10 screen. Once you’ve designed and chosen a screen and projector then consult AVBP for audio requirements. “When it comes to install, if your staff don’t know how to terminate, the AVBP includes easy to follow termination guides for popular AV connectors including VGA, BNC, MiniDin, TRS, XLR, Speakon RCA and RJ45 connectors.” AVBP also includes information for teaching staff about control and display equipment, microphone polar patterns, projectors and aspect ratios. The DTR-60.5 is optimised for whole-home distribution and can connect to compatible entertainment devices through a single CAT5e/6 cable. HDBaseT enables long-reach wired connectivity up to 100m for uncompressed full HD multimedia content. “The addition of HDBaseT helps address a key issue for installers; providing HD quality over long distances,” says sales director Keith Haas. “It also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, THX-certified sound quality and ISF-certified calibration control.” DTR-60.5 boasts 135W per channel of power and support for the new 4K Ultra HD video displays using either the 4K pass-through feature or up-scaling for conventional SD and HD video sources via a Marvel QDEO processor. Powerful yet easy-touse: SIX 2013 aims to help installers streamline business processes

SIX OF THE BEST FOR D-TOOLS KEEP DOCKING THE TABLETS SAYS INVISION

D-Tools has updated its software platform to improve data and project management, mobile connectivity and drawing capabilities. SIX 2013 offers commercial and residential AV integrators a powerful yet easy-to-use system to streamline business processes, says chief technical officer Corey Krehel: “The platform was conceived and designed with the ever-changing needs of the market and customers in mind.” The upgrade builds on the new architecture of the System Integrator platform to make it faster and easier to perform key functions such as estimation, system design and project management. Other improved areas are QuickBooks and third-party integrations. “The result is a robust yet simple-to-use solution that enables us to deploy new features,” says Corey. “Our Software Assurance customers will receive new features as they are completed throughout the year and we will make annual updates available to the rest of our users.” Other new features and enhancements include Product Catalogue with expanded user-configurable pricing levels and the ability to find products and accessories used and replace them. Drawing enhancements include the ability to add product trees to Visio and AutoCAD.

Invision UK has announced distribution of iRoom’s latest iPad docking solutions as well a new range of docks for Android tablets. The first of the new products is the fixDock for iPad, a fixed in-wall mounting system for Apple’s second- to fourthgeneration iPads. The design, similar to the iRoom miniDock, has a flush mounted glass bezel and an aluminium frame around it. To launch its range of Android docking stations, iRoom has formed CMoDe (charging mobile devices), a new company to develop universal charging for mobile devices. The first of CMoDe’s products is the fixDock for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, the first Android in-wall solution on the market. Where the tablet has to be secured to reduce the risk of theft, a security kit is available for both iRoom and CMoDe fixDocks. It consists of a strong cable, one end of which is screwed to the back box of the fixDock and the other is attached to the tablet. “The launch of the fixDock is great news,” says sales specialist David Meyerowitz. “We’ve been distributing iRoom docks for some time and they’ve proved popular. We’re excited there is now a version available for Android. Demand for Android products is on the increase.” More information: Invision UK +44 (0)1359 270280 www.invisionuk.com

More information: D-Tools www.d-tools.com Anything but a jazzed up iPod dock, channel director Alex Munro says of the Q-BT3

DID THE EARTH TO MOVE FOR YOU? A new Bluetooth wireless loudspeaker packed with hidden features is more than a jazzed up iPod dock, insists its maker. Q Acoustics channel director Alex Munro says of the Q-BT3: “This is not a jazzed up iPod dock or modified table radio in disguise. It looks and sounds like a pair of genuine, superior quality Hi-Fi loudspeakers because that’s what they are. “They simply look like a stylish pair of small Hi-Fi loudspeakers, available in three colours. But bring a smartphone into the mix and wirelessly stream Bluetooth signals to the Q-BT3 and it is transformed into the equivalent of a super quality modern mini system. “Connect it to the audio output from a TV or set-top box and it comfortably outperforms typical sound-bars. For movie lovers who want to feel the earth move there’s a separate subwoofer output, while a second line level input allows a connection of a CD, DVD or Blu-ray player.” Hidden within the Q-BT3 speakers is a two 50W per channel power amplifier, a Bluetooth V4.0 wireless receiver, with advanced ‘aptX’ capability for improved sound quality and a low-distortion Digital to Analogue Converter (DAC), accessed via an optical input. Each Q-BT3 speaker, 148mm x 240mm x 226mm, utilises a 25mm silk dome tweeter and 100mm coated paper cone midrange/bass unit. Speakers come in juice red, urban white and jet black colours. Q Acoustics is a brand of Armour Home. More information: Armour Home +44 (0)1279 501111, www.armourhome.co.uk

HIT THE SWITCH FOR MATRIX

The PRO3HD66M extends up to six sources to six HDBaseT outputs for up to 70m

Atlona is shipping what it calls a cost-effective matrix switcher to route sources to displays for media to be shared in multiple spaces simultaneously. The PRO3HD66M 6x6 HDMI to HDBaseT matrix switcher uses HDBaseT and Power over Category cable (PoCc) to extend up to six sources to six HDBaseT outputs and two mirrored HDMI output connections over a distance of up to 70m. To facilitate multi-room distribution, the device powers zone extenders, eliminating the need for remote receivers to require a separate power source. Ethernet connections

contribute to simpler system configurations thanks to GUI and TCP/IP control. Senior product manager Steve Heintz says: “We’re introducing the easiest, most affordable and reliable solution to route and connect multiple outputs simultaneously, resulting in lower costs for multi-room set ups and applications.” With de-embedded digital S/PDIF audio for the HDBaseT outputs, audio distribution becomes easier for either multichannel amplifiers or AV receivers. In addition, two mirrored HDMI outputs enable multi-channel HD digital audio from Blu-ray sources. Programmable EDID memory pre-sets come pre-loaded to any source connected to the switcher, ensuring all connected displays receive the highest supported audio and video signals. The PRO3HD66M also has a USB port for installers to perform updates directly from the field. More information: Atlona +44(0)1252 876300 www.atlona.com

WORLD ‘LARGEST’ OLED TV TURNS HEADS

The Imax-like curvature is designed to fill the viewer’s field of vision more completely than a flat-screen TV

LG Electronics unveiled what it claims is the world’s largest Ultra High Definition OLED TV at the IFA consumer electronics and appliance trade show. The 77in Ultra HD curved TV follows in the footsteps of the company’s 55in alternative, launched a few months ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. “LG was proud to be the first company to commercially launch an OLED TV and we are once again setting our sights high with the Ultra HD curved OLED TV,” says LG Home Entertainment Company president Havis Kwon. “We will never stop pushing the boundaries and exploring new possibilities.” Currently the largest OLED

TV is also LG’s most advanced next-generation TV to date, says Havis. The massive screen’s Imax-like curvature aims to fills the viewer’s field of vision more completely than a flatscreen TV. The television combines LG’s WRGB OLED and Ultra HD technology, enabling it to produce infinite contrast ratio and resolution four times greater than regular full HD. The futuristic-looking TV is “a true home entertainment wonder that has to be seen to be believed,” adds Havis. More information: LG +44 (0)844 8475454 www.lg.com

RADIUS TURNS FULL CIRCLE ON STYLE

Latest Radius evolution introduces new models and all C-CAM driver technologies

Monitor Audio has refined its Radius sat/sub systems to incorporate all metal drivers and new models fashioned for style-conscious audio fans. Alongside revamped Radius 45, 90 and 270 designs, the new eight-strong model line up includes slimmed-down versions of the 225 centre speaker and Radius One soundbar, together with a new Radius 200 centre-channel speaker and two super-compact active subwoofers: Radius 380 and 390. Performance enhancements come from new all-metal driver configurations. For the first time in a Radius series, the new range utilises C-CAM bass drivers, featuring concave cone profiles introduced originally by the range-topping Platinum series and subsequently on Gold GX. Unlike conventional cones, which incorporate a centre aperture for the voice-coil, the new Radius bass cones take the form of a continuous rigid surface, coupled to a longer voice coil and larger motor by an innovative, more efficient

drive assembly. The equipment comes in gloss black, gloss white and walnut finishes. More information: Monitor Audio +44 (0)1268 740580 www.monitoraudio.co.uk
