Set in stone!

Transform an iPad Mini into an elegant in-wall * touchscreen keypad, set in a real stone surround. In an age of wireless devices, it is easy to overlook the importance of a fixed ‘always there’ control point. Because sometimes, mobile devices can be a little too mobile, and are nowhere to be found at the very moment they are needed. This becomes even more important when control goes beyond entertainment and embraces lighting and automation. At this point, fixed control panels become ‘essential’ rather than just ‘desirable’

Editor’s Desk Show Business! Ever since the magazine’s launch five years ago at the ISE, EI has been a fan of this power-house of a show. This year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest yet and EI is looking forward to meeting friends old and new at the show and talking about the plans we have to make EI even bigger and better this year. Always keen to give those planning on going as much useful info as possible in the run up, we present a full preview of the event in this issue. If you are not going, then the preview still provides a guide to key launches and products coming your way in 2014, as will our show review next month. Our own live events are of course back with a bang this year with Essential Install Live! South first up, moving to a two day event this year (June 11-12). We hope many of you return this year or are able to make the trip for the first time due to the now larger time footprint offered. Sales for the stands available at the show have been brisk and at the time of going to press only seven stands were remaining, so get onto the sales team fast if you are planning on exhibiting as they won’t be available for long. Even if you miss out there, space is available at the show’s Northern sister show, back this year at its new home of EventCity in Manchester on October 15. All your favourite installer led features will also be back for this year including Q&A, Case Studies and A Day in the Life, if you are an installer and would like to get involved with any of those, just give us a shout. Manufacturers or distributors should get in touch if they want to get involved with our regular In-Depth product reports or have an idea for any one-off technical or comment pieces they feel would be useful. The team will also be introducing new editorial features and ways to get involved with INE MAGAZ EI this year, so stay tuned for more info on those. There are now more ways than ever to interact with EI electronically. Our twitter feed is growing all the time so check out @EssentialInstal get involved. Kordz’s innovative HDMI extension and upgrade solutions are now available from HD Connectivity

Kordz and HD Connectivity join forces Kordz and HD Connectivity have announced that they are partnering to offer Kordz HDMI products to the UK market. HD Connectivity will now offer Kordz core HDMI products, including the award winning NEO-S3 HDMI upgrade kit. “This is a natural collaboration between two like-minded companies dedicated to offering the highest quality HDMI solutions,” said David Meyer, founder and MD of Kordz. “Both Kordz and HD Connectivity believe that great products come from solid understanding of HDMI. Our products work so well because they are engineered that way.” Chris Pinder, MD of HD Connectivity, added: “In Kordz we have a highly specialised partner that shares an affinity for good design and engineering, reinforced with education and real integrity. Kordz founder David Meyer is regarded as CEDIA’s most authoritative voice in CI-centric HDMI education. And together we want to help demystify the new frontiers of HDMI 2.0 and 4K.” Kordz launched its NEO-S3 product at CEDIA 2013 in

Denver, Colorado where it was awarded the Manufacturer’s Excellence Award for Best New Product. David explained: “Kordz NEO defines a whole new category of HDMI extension. It alleviates concerns about passive HDMI cable redundancy by upgrading existing installations to the latest high-speed capabilities. For new installations we can extend to 30m on thinner, more flexible, easier to pull cable, reducing mounting depth at both ends to just one inch. “We have received many requests from UK customers looking to upgrade their existing HDMI cable installation to 4K UltraHD while avoiding unnecessary landfill.” Kordz will be showing NEO-S3 and its HDMI high performance cables on the HD Connectivity stand (7-Q195) at the ISE, 2014. Meridian recognises Martin’s Hi-fi

Bob Stuart (left), Allen Boothroyd (centre) with Ted Matrtin commemorating a 45-year business relationship

Acknowledging Martins Hi-fi’s proud 45-year heritage in Norwich, Norfolk, company founder Ted Martin was a VIP guest of honour at Meridian’s Huntingdon HQ on December 17 in an event held to recognise the company as Meridian’s longest serving retail partner. Ted and his brother Mike founded Martins Hi-fi in January 1968. Sadly Mike died in

1979 leaving Ted to carry on the business with the same tradition of personal service, integrity and reliability that has positioned the store as one of Norfolk’s leading independent Hi-Fi, home cinema and custom install specialists. Meridian co-founders, Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd welcomed Ted who was given an extensive tour of the factory and demonstration areas. Back in 1968, when Martins Hi-fi was established, both Bob and Allen were at University, Bob at Imperial College and Allen at the Royal College of Art, but later, in 1972, they became the design team for Lecson Audio, which was stocked by the forwardthinking management of Martins Hi-fi. Ted would have been particularly interested then, to be shown an original Lecson system as part of Meridian’s showpiece museum. To commemorate the event and the partnership, Meridian produced a one off commemorative plaque to celebrate the 45 year anniversary. Ted commented: “Having heard good things about Lecson back in the seventies led to the first contact with Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd and of course later Meridian. Realising that Bob and Alan had the design and technology that was far ahead of anything else it made sense for Martins Hi-fi to retail their products. Now, 45 years later, Martins are still with Meridian as Premium Partners and Bob and Alan are still leading the field with design and technology.” More information: Meridian +44 (0)1480 445678 www.meridian-audio.com

Panasonic Joins the HDBaseT Alliance The HDBaseT Alliance has announced that Panasonic is now a Contributor member of the Alliance. Panasonic has played a role in the development of HDBaseT technology since its introduction in 2010 and already offers 20 HDBaseTenabled projectors and commercial displays, including what the maker says is the world’s first 1080p lamp-free professional projector with HDBaseT. Referred to as DIGITAL LINK, the HDBaseT enabled projectors and displays enable a single CAT5e and above cable to transmit uncompressed HD videos, audio and control commands up to 100 meters. For projects such as digital signage and equipping a boardroom or conference room, Panasonic says installers can realise

significant time and cost savings. Micha Risling, marketing chair of the HDBaseT Alliance, said: “Panasonic is not just a strong advocate for HDBaseT, it is also a market-leading provider of HDBaseT-enabled components, that has played and will continue to play a critical role in growing the ecosystem of HDBaseT products. “Its success with integrating HDBaseT into projectors and professional displays reflects the success the HDBaseT Alliance has enjoyed in terms of growing to more than 80 members offering solutions that enable end-to-end deployment of HDBaseT.” More information: www.HDBaseT.org

amBX works partners Cisco amBX has teamed up with Cisco on a project which both parties say will increase usability and lower the cost of lighting in public buildings and industry. ‘Light as a Service (LaaS), is a two-year innovation project co-funded by the UK’s Technology Strategy Board, designed to produce light that is powered, connected and controlled by digital networks, increasing control and reducing costs. LaaS will bring together existing technologies, emerging standards and policy obligations to create a new power service developing and integrating protocols, test them in hardware devices and demonstrate the solution in-situ. LaaS will be self-aware and open to new backend devices as well as to front-end consumer applications. Cisco will develop core protocols and integration and will amBX has just been added to the Club Lounge area of the North West Design Centre

Invision UK releases new guides

Invision UK’s new cabling guide is now available

14 Essential Install

Invision UK has announced the release of two new guides for installers to get the best from its growing portfolio. The latest product guide for in-wall audio, video and control, features technical specifications, installation advice, product overviews, model numbers, and ordering information. “Installers working in home technology need to take advantage of this new guide,” explained Mark Taylor, business manager at Invision UK. “By doing so, they can benefit from Invision’s vast knowledge as the UK’s fastest growing home technology distributor. We have packed the guide full of the sort of information they can use to help them work smarter, develop new opportunities, and grow their businesses.” The guide is split into three main sections, each of which provides technical data, installation guidelines and tips: Built-in Audio, Built-in Video and Built-in Control. A new cabling guide is also available showcasing the range of quality cabling

solutions for residential custom installations. The guide provides sections on category cable, structured cable, automation cable, speaker cable and HDMI cable as well as a range of plugs and other connectors. The guide also features technical specifications, installation advice, product overviews and ordering information. “No installer worth his salt would underestimate the need for high quality cabling,” said Mark. “If you’re going to install top-end entertainment systems and other electronics, you need to pull it all together using the best components. Otherwise things like sound quality and data transmission could be compromised. You need this guide if you want to deliver the best service.” Wiring guidelines are also included as is a section on testing; an essential measure in preparation and problem solving to ensure successful installations. Essential habitech

Head Out of the Cloud Who wants their favourite content stored in Nebraska? For choice and performance keep it physical with a hard-driving home entertainment network says Habitech’s Justin Martin-Lawrence.

The affordable Stream system exceeds the versatility and quality of competitors.

It’s a new year in AV, but even today there’s nothing to replace the quality and versatility of physical media. Broadband struggles to download a movie in full quality within any reasonable time frame, which is a major limitation in boxes built to rely on downloaded content. Then there are the AppleTV-based products which don’t support Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD-Master. Purchased media is locked to devicetypes or accounts and full-HD quality is compressed to make it workable with average broadband. UltraViolet has limited content and no Disney support. And 4K resolution? Forget it: massive bandwidth is required to stream or download a typical 160GB file. The truth is that there’s no definitive standard that brings full HD (including audio) content through one platform – hardly the seamless high-end home cinema experience your clients are demanding! For custom integrators there is a single, obvious alternative: a state-of-the art media server. The new Stream entertainment server/player system offers your clients the superior performance of the good old silver disc with the choice and convenience of VOD anywhere in the home. And it preserves the sanctity of ownership, which, when you think about it, will never go away. Since Stream made its debut on the pages of EI last year, we’ve expanded the product platform to include the MicroPlayer - a handy network player for use where there is a screen but no AV system - and the Stream ‘Flow 7’, a versatile Android-powered 7” touch-screen, designed to enhance a wide range of systems in new and legacy installations. In the Stream range you have the tools to create a high performance, multi-zone home entertainment system which exceeds the versatility and quality of competitors, affordable to your clients but with healthy margins attached.

The New Stream Network in a nutshell »» Build quality: Stream offers robust aluminium cases (even Stream Micro); server-grade 24/7 drives and high performance networking. »» The Stream Content Centre is not a Windows-based PC. It’s a Linux-powered media server that stores a bitperfect backup of the original disc. And you don’t need the Blu-ray disc present to play a film. With films, only the main film track is stored and all media is stored by name in a lossless .mkv file - available as multiple streams to multiple players simultaneously over gigabit. »» Impeccable playback quality: frame-rate matched playback and hardware video acceleration on the ContentPlayer (framematch not available on Micro). Full HD Audio supported including Dolby True-HD and DTS-HD Master on all models.

»» Stream’s smart-titling system uses up to three independent media databases to get the best and most accurate metadata. Advanced media type segregation identifies TV shows and complex media discs and catalogues them accordingly. MyMovies database integration provides accurate regionspecific lookups and better metadata capabilities. More features coming in Q1 and available as an upgrade on any server or player. »» Media selection: ContentPlayer and StreamMicro offer multiple view types to select and play media. Set favourite scenes on films and recall them, choose from multiple languages and audio tracks, view subtitles as required. Both models remember the point that you stopped a selection, so you can resume at that point or start again and they remember video and audio settings per selection as well. »» Music: ContentCentre stores CDs losslessly. They can be played using ContentPlayer/Micro or used as a media resource for your favourite music streaming system: NuVo, Sonos, C4, etc. »» AirPlay: ContentPlayer/Micro fully support AirPlay audio and video. »» Photos: full support for storage and replay of photos in most graphic formats. »» Drivers: Exceptional two-way drivers with full metadata feedback, power management (sleep while not in use, wake on LAN when required), interrupts from doorbells, media themes (such as lights raise/lower when media played/stopped). »» Add ons: ContentPlayer and StreamMicro both support xbmc addons including iPlayer, Spotify and a wealth of other media services. »» 4K Capable: All units manufactured after June 2013 are designed to support 4K UHD playback and Blu-ray 4K.

Essential HD Connectivity

The HD Connectivity ISE Stand (7-Q195) offers an exciting and unique range of HDMI solutions for residential and commercial installations. 2014 will see HDC promoting brands from three countries, British (HDanywhere), American (Just Add Power) and Australian (Kordz) with a focus on three different technologies, HDBaseT, HDMI over IP and native HDMI. HDC is proud of the UK manufactured credentials of the company’s modular HDBaseT products

HD Connectivity (HDC) is very proud of its HDanywhere brand’s status as the only British manufacturer in the HD Distribution products category and a HDBaseT Alliance Member. Key ISE launches being the introduction of a larger Ultra HD 4K-compatible 8x8 chassis size to its Modular 4K series and a HDBT-input module for ‘decentralised’ remote source integration connected to the matrix, such as a games console or Blu-ray player. For those yet to familiarise themselves with the range, designed and built in the UK, HDanywhere Modular is a customisable Ultra HD 4K compatible HDMI matrix switcher that uses a patented system of interchangeable input/output (I/O) module options to enable custom AV professionals to bespoke build HD distribution systems precisely matched to the individuality of every project. Chris Pinder, HDC MD, says: “The 8×8 chassis has ultimately arrived one-year later than we originally planned, but it has allowed us to enhance the spec to accommodate Ultra HD 4K/60 resolutions and a more future-proofed backplane.” Integrators are able to specify which signal transmission technology is used for each TV location. Modules include HDMI, HDBaseT Pro and HDBaseT Lite out and now HDBaseT-IN, all of which can be mixed and matched in a single system, thus eliminating expensive unused capacity and unnecessary functionality.

Chris argues: “There are three breakthrough aspects to Modular; first, a patented British-built hardware design that offers greater system flexibility and scalability, secondly a web-based operating system delivers an array of system and behaviour management tools and lastly, the ‘heartbeat’ remote monitoring system that saves installers time and money. We’ve had a fantastic integrator response to Modular’s build quality and software features, but frustration at the maximum system size. With the introduction of the new larger 8×8 chassis, it increases the number of jobs that Modular is suitable for, essentially anything with up to eight sources and displays, which is a sweet spot in custom install project size. With the introduction of the MOD88 8×8 chassis, we would hope to realise the ambition of HDanywhere being used in a larger percentage of integrated home projects, growing our CI market share in 2014 and beyond.”

Just Add Power HDIP-2G ‘More Play’ Just Add Power offers its HDIP-2G series as one of the market leading HDMI over IP-based solutions, offering limitless HDMI distribution and video wall scaling. The manufacturer states that no other video distribution solution in the world delivers so much rich function over a single CATx cable and has dubbed its full feature-set ‘More Play’. On live demo at ISE will be some brand new ‘More Play’ features, namely ‘Real-time HDMI Snapshot’, giving the ability to take a real-time HDMI ‘snapshot’ that allows the user to be certain what is being shown anywhere on the HDMI over IP network. Users can preview the video of a source device on a controller before choosing to switch to it for example. Also ‘JPEG Image Splash’, where users can load and push JPEGS to any of the display locations. If the network goes

down, the saved picture or pictures can automatically be shown instead of an annoying blank screen. Image splash can also be used as a deliberate marketing tool as support for storing multiple JPEG images enables HDIP devices to also function as digital signage players. Chris says: “Using this powerful and innovative system, installers are able to deliver large multi-zone HDTV and video wall projects by harnessing the flexibility and scalability of Ethernet networks, overcoming the sometimes limited and fixed port size input/output constraints of legacy HDMI Matrix to always achieve the right sized system.”

Striking the right Kordz The best and most powerful systems can of course fall over if the right level of cabling is not employed and this is where HDC’s third line of attack for 2014 comes into play in the shape of the Ultra HD and Ultra high quality HDMI 2.0 cables and accessories from Australian manufacture, Kordz. Following the inking of a deal for HDC to deliver Kordz products directly to the UK market in 2013, HDC will feature a live exhibit of the award winning Kordz NEO-S3 and high performance HDMI cables at the ISE. As HDMI 2.0 was unveiled officially to the world at IFA Berlin in September 2013, Kordz, became the first approved HDMI 2.0 adopter in the world. Chris says: “With ISE just around the corner we are looking forward to being able to show our UK and European customers the exceptional performance of Kordz HDMI cables as well as the revolution and excitement that Kordz NEO-S3 has caused for HDMI. “In Kordz we have a highly specialised partner that shares an affinity for good design and engineering, reinforced with education and real integrity. Kordz founder David Meyer is

regarded as CEDIA’s most authoritative voice in CI-centric HDMI education. And together we want to help demystify the new frontiers of HDMI 2.0 and 4K, providing UK installers with the knowledge they really need.” “Our partnership is a natural collaboration between two like-minded companies dedicated to offering the highest quality HDMI solutions,” says David Meyer, founder and managing director of Kordz. “Both Kordz and HD Connectivity believe that great products come from a solid understanding of HDMI. Our products work so well because they are engineered that way.” Kordz launched its NEO-S3 product at CEDIA 2013 in Denver, Colorado where it was awarded the Manufacturer’s Excellence Award for Best New Product. David says: “Kordz NEO defines a whole new category of HDMI extension. It alleviates concerns about passive HDMI cable redundancy by upgrading existing installations to the latest high-speed capabilities. For new installations we can extend to 30m on thinner, more flexible, easier to pull cable, reducing mounting depth at both ends to just one inch. We have received many requests from UK customers looking to upgrade their existing HDMI cable installation to 4K UltraHD while avoiding unnecessary landfill.” David Meyer will be presenting an educational training session at the ISE 2014 entitles ‘4K Video Compatibility and HDMI System Design’ on February 5 at 14:00, Room D201. Essential #Liveinstall

Smart thinking Kris Gamble, director of Customised and founder of the #LiveInstall community considers the impact of the keen interest now being shown by multinationals on smart home concepts. Twitter has been a great platform for LiveInstall, we are able to network with other businesses and customers anywhere in the UK and further afield. We can show off our followers work daily with them using #LiveInstall and we keep track of trends in our industry and follow news stories as they emerge. The source of many of these stories this month is CES 2014 in Las Vegas, where some of the biggest technology brands have been announcing their future visions. Samsung, for example, revealed their intention to bring out a Smart Home system linking everything from gadgets to household appliances. Meanwhile, Google turned its attention to cars, announcing that it will be integrating Android into the dashboards of such manufacturers as Audi, Honda and Hyundai. Developments such as these raise significant questions for our industry and it is intriguing to consider the potential impact of the activities of major brands. The media interest surrounding Samsung’s Smart Home fails to note that such systems are readily available. The same goes for LG’s HomeChat system, allowing users control over their home via SMS text messages, a method already offered by the likes of HDL. Samsung’s new service will be limited at first to their own products, before expanding later to support those of other manufacturers; however, this raises the question of whether other brands would be willing to use the platform of such a significant competitor. Whilst such developments undoubtedly bring welcome limelight to the industry, we are led to consider the extent of extra training that might be necessary to bring them to a brand hungry audience who are less willing to adapt to expertise. Google’s latest idea is another step forward in the development of cars as smart systems in themselves; why then is this a flourishing area, now viewed by consumers as the expected norm, while intelligent homes remain the preserve of the luxury home market? For instance, in 2010, luxury homes and apartments

accounted for 70% of the smart home market. This focus is integral and not about to change, but arguably there is a significant barrier to be broken down in order to show consumers the availability and affordability of smart home products. Any attention brought by the brand power of Samsung and their competitors provides an opportunity that the industry cannot afford to miss. Perhaps it signals the start of the home’s fightback against cars in the battle for smart system superiority; Twitter is the perfect medium for us to discuss how to take advantage of this. Follow us on twitter @LiveInstall

The latest opinion Every month we ask the LiveInstall community for their views on current topics. Many of the contributors are looking forward to seeing the latest tech released at ISE, but still remain undecided whether they will attend or not. Trevor Pace, @Trevange, looks forward to seeing more HDMI distribution options for 4K and Paul Wright, @digital_plumber expects a new wave of Android based control systems. We asked dozens of installers this month about what needs to change in UK homes to make properties better equipped for technology and the response was unanimous, a Cat5e/6.6a/7 wired infra-structure is urgently needed to give homes a fighting chance in the future. Finally, we recently concluded the latest #LiveInstallBattle, which also makes use of Twitter to put installers around the country and abroad in a head to head competition, with our followers judging and voting for the most impressive entries. The latest winner to emerge was Trevor Pace (@trevange) of Trevange Services, with his #LiveInstall of a television and audio system in a period home. Thanks to everyone for their involvement and fantastic contributions to the competition. Essential eyestones

Boxing clever

Duncan Summers, director of Eyestones, install company turned manufacturer, tells EI how the company is finding fans with sync-box, an inventive product which recesses a connection suite into the wall.

Steve Noyes (left) and Duncan Summers of Eyestones believe the sync-box is the perfect answer to a professional finish when mounting a TV

Essential Install (EI): “When did you first get the idea for the snyc-box? Duncan Summers (DS): “Recently we have seen a significant change to TV screens. The quality of viewing has evolved to HD and 3D very quickly. With this, physical changes have also developed. The screens are slimmer and lighter with flat brackets also slimmer and lighter. We recognised that there was a fundamental problem - the physical plug top and AV connections are now thicker than the products they are connecting!” EI: So how does sync-box work? DS: “sync-box is a unique recessed power and AV socket, for use when installing wall mounted TVs. It is designed around a standard double socket space using the same module components already being used throughout the UK and Europe. The difference? sync-box is recessed by 40mm and has a unique cover plate which when in location, has a slender 10mm profile. Therefore, it is now possible to install a new ultra thin LCD or LED screen with all cables connected professionally and stylishly behind the screen. For screens mounted on a swing bracket, the cover plate leaves a stylish finish with plugs and AV terminals hidden behind. The cover plate will also be available in various colours and finishes. “Currently the installer has a major obstacle to overcome due to the slender design of the screens and indeed the brackets. This obstacle usually results in the installer hard wiring the power with a fixed fuse spur and secondly, creating a huge hole in the wall behind the screen to ‘stuff’ the AV wiring into. Not exactly a professional solution when installing an expensive product for your customer. sync-box is also completely adaptable for any configuration as it is designed to house Euro or Keystone modules which are available via our website or throughout many distributors across the UK.” EI: In what ways does originally being an install company help you identify product needs and support your customers? DS: “Simple. We experience many challenges on most installs. These can vary from aesthetics, costs, logistics or indeed products. Over the past year or two, we have experienced the same problem time after time - how to install a flat screen TV flush against the wall, while giving the wiring and wall behind a professional finish. sync-box solves all

The sync-box is designed around a standard double socket space but is recessed by 40mm

of these problems. We also have other products which are patent pending, but rest assured, we are confident these will also be ‘game changers’. EI: Tell us about the new premises, what advantages will this offer the company and its customers? DS: “Our premises in Paddock Wood, Kent has approximately 5,000 square feet of storage and production space. Our location is ideal for direct links into the centre of London in 40 minutes via rail. We are 30 minutes from Ashford International station with direct rail links into Europe. Our distribution partners are able to courier to anywhere in Europe on a next day delivery service, or anywhere within the M25 on a same day service.” EI: “As a design company what other services do you provide? DS: “We offer bespoke AV and lighting design solutions for domestic and commercial properties. Our team of skilled and knowledgeable designers have the expertise to find a solution for any given budget. We have designed countless projects with budgets from £5k up to £100k.” EI: How did Essential Install Live! North go? DS: “EI Live! was a ground breaking project for us. The response we received was remarkable with many distribution companies placing pre-orders and some companies requesting exclusive rights for sync-box! Furthermore, we are receiving emails on a daily basis via our website, with either information requests or indeed, customers trying to place orders. We are very proud to announce that Habitech has agreed exclusivity in the CI market for distribution of sync-box.” More information: Eyestones +44 (0)1892 838860, www.sync-box.com Habitech +44 (0)1420 540054, www.habitech.co.uk

Essential Case Study: Overture Ltd

Overture introduces a fine home cinema Frank G. Moran, director of experienced install firm Overture Limited, takes EI on a journey into high-quality cinema. being papered for example and the fabric walls were filled with more material to pad things down.” As well as a top notch cinema, the install team suggested to the client that by building a bar at one end of the space, the 13 metre long room could still be used as a social/ party area. Frank explains: “We had just finished another project for a client who wanted a ‘pub’ in her (large) house and we had worked with some shopfitters to discreetly install large scale audio and video. It was our idea to put the bar into the Cinema – seemed like the obvious thing to do at the time.

The bar area means the room is multi-use and the music abilities of the system can be taken full advantage of

“In this particular space, the client was also interested in good quality music playback and the ability to play music loud (particularly when the bar had been used to good effect). I always look to encourage clients to use spaces for other activities if it means our systems get used more often.”

Talking Technical

The cinema makes use of Control4’s own lighting control platform

Frank explains that the project came about as the client purchased this mid 18th Century property that the firm had spent about three years installing cables in for the previous owners, who recomneded Overture to the new owners. The new owner of this large period property in North Oxfordshire wanted a cinema, but the team quickly recognised that what had been identified as a ‘party’ room in the basement (with cabling for professional PA speakers, disco lights and even a dance floor installed) would be a much better space than the smaller room previously considered. Frank explains: “Convincing the cleint that the basement room was a much better venue was a subtle process, I just showed him a very large screen with a huge scale audio system and watched the cogs turning as he worked it out for himself!” Although the structure of the room could not be altered, acoustic treatment was applied to the walls and ceiling wherever possible to reduce any anomalies. Frank says: “The Audessy room correction system in the Integra processor we were going to use is pretty good, but you never really know what you are going to get until you fire the system up for the first time. “The property is incredibly substantial with huge stone walls, so bass transmission was never going to be huge problem. The client project managed the job himself and is very savy as far as AV and acoustics are concerned so implemented many more subtle changes to aid the acoustics. The ceilings were lined with an absorbent material before

So what kit did the team decide was going to best service the needs of this high performance and multi-use space? Miller and Kreisel S150 speakers and X12 Subwoofers (7.2) produce an impressive audio performance, as the building was constructed in 1740, the thick walls and solid structure help to ensure huge bass extension. Parasound Halo amplifiers provide the drive with Integra doing the processing courtesy of the DHC-80.3 and Oppo BluRay provides the source. A Seymour acoustically transparent fourmetre screen, provides the picture platform in concert with the 4K capable Sony VPL-VW1000ES and the seats from FrontRow are set on two levels. Frank says: “We looked at a number of speaker options, but the MK 150s were used because we had lots of experience installing them in other projects and knew that they would provide the coverage and level to fill a room that size. The Parasound Power Amps were chosen by the client and the Projector was selected after a demonstration against a JVC model (and the client was keen to keep his 4K options open). “The processor choice was the most difficult decision for the client to make, but the results prove that it was the correct one. The Oppo BluRay decision was an easy one in comparison! The Control4 components and lighting control were all specified and recommended by myself.” Getting the best performance from the impresive line up of kit of course needed to be aproached with care. Frank says: “Probably the most difficult part was choosing the exact position for the front speakers, all concealed behind the four metre screen. We had to try to work out how high the tiered seating was likely to be (which was also dependant on what chairs were likely to be installed at a later date). The

client was again very hands on and helpful during this stage of the process.” The cinema is controlled using Control4 for the compents and blinds and the project also took advantage of the new Panelised Lighting control platform from Control4. Overture is a fan of the new Control4 lighting system citing its ease of programming and lots of control options for the client (via iPhone, iPad, keypad or the on-screen display) meaning the customer has a very accessible way of making fine adjustments to the lighting using the large screen. As the property was of a considerable age, this also offered challenges to the project team, but the installation of an additional wireless access point took care of most of the issues. Keen to takes advantage of next generation picture technology, the cleint was keen to include 4K capability, so a 4K capable Sony VPL-VW1000ES takes centre stage in the project. Frank explains: “The client was very impressed with the results from Sky HD when upscaled to 4K. As an industry, we seem to spend our lives covering the bases for emerging technologies and we can’t blame our clients for wanting to make sure they are as protected as well as possible to cover future technologies. “I think that 4K offers tremendous potential, but at the moment it is just that – potential. Would like to think that 4K content might become available, but without a vehicle to deliver (other than a downloadable option) I suspect it will flounder.” So now the project is finished, what does the client think? Frank says: “The owner loves the results, particularly from Blu-Ray (in fact he said he can’t imagine how 4K content

could make it any better). Our favourite part? The bar of course!” As a skilled exponant of the art of home cinema EI was keen to get Frank’s views on the future of the sector: “I think that as we have seen in the stereo two-channel arena, home cinema seems to be polarising into ‘cheapest’ or ‘best’ with the area in the middle becoming the domain of the online retailers and self-build enthusiasts. We love this kind of project, one that allows us some creative licence, particularly with a client who is very communicative and happy to listen. “If we are judged by our results, then I think we should consider that we have done a good job by this installation!”

Essential Brackets, Racking, Support and Furniture

Get serious about support Start 2014 with a solid base as EI presents the latest info on products that support and present CI hardware. With a new range for 2014, B-Tech AV Mounts has launched a family of flat screen floor stands which includes options for mounting screens in a back-to-back format. The BT8551, BT8552, BT8553 and BT8554 are the company’s answer to increasing demand for stands that are stylish yet robust. The maker says the stands can mount screens in landscape or portrait and offer functionality as well as strength, with the black powder coated bases providing a solid but discreet foundation for two poles to which the screens are mounted. Each unit comes with B-Tech’s Torsion Tilt mechanism for screen adjustment and cable management facilities for a tidy finish and each stand has three height options (1m, 1.5m and 2m) and a choice of either black or chrome for the poles. The BT8551 is made for medium/large screens up to 50in and weighing 35kg, the BT8552 is designed to mount two medium/large screens in a back-to-back format and supports screens up to 50in and weighing 35kg and the BT8553 is built for screens up to 65in and weighing up to 35kg. The BT8554 is the largest of the group and is made to mount two

large screens in a back-to-back format, supporting screens up to 65in and weighing up to 35kg. The stands also have locking bars for security if being used in public spaces. Suitable for large screen installs in commercial spaces, the company’s Universal Flat Screen Wall Mount (BT9903) is suitable for screens over 65in and can support weights of 130kg. The universal interface fits screens with mounting patterns up to 1100mm x 730mm and has adjustment screws that enable the screen to be levelled once mounted. The unit comes with a simple ‘hook-on’ installation and all mounting hardware is included. When more subtle installs are the aim, B-Tech has its BT8221, an ultra-slim, double arm flat screen wall mount with tilt and swivel. When folded flat, the mount stands proud of the wall by just 37mm, but can accommodate screens up to 65in and weighing 36kg with arms that can extend to 560mm. The unit comes with an easy-tilt mechanism of 15° in either direction and has three swivel-points; 180° on the wall, 360°on the centre point and 180° at the interface. Other features include a cable management system, cover plates and an integrated spirit level to aid accurate mounting. Alltrade is one of the key distributors of B-Tech products and is currently taking orders for this product and the BT9903. SANUS has announced a completely new line in the Premium Series TV wall mounts, which are designed to deliver intuitive, simple installation and high-end aesthetics. Designed with integrated safety features, the maker has included a redesigned and simplified installation template and has trimmed the range to include 11 models to cater for three size ranges; 13in to 39in, 40in to 50in and 51in to 80in. Supersize panels, from 84in to 90in, are still catered for with a number of XXL products. The installation process is made straight-forward with a key-holed wall plate and quick release tabs for tool-less set up. Audible safety locks give reassurance of a safe and secure connection and every model comes with a magnetic level and stud-finder tool, fully assembled interface and preinstalled finger tightening fasteners that eliminate the need for tools. The Premium Series also offers adjustments to level the TV after it is mounted and the range also offers a kick-stand that pulls the TV away from the wall. The range offers options of fixed-position, tilting, full-motion and full motion plus accessories such as sound bar mounts. Installers can get a look at the new range at the ISE event in February. A consistently popular innovator in this sector is Future Automation and the company does not disappoint with its latest creation, the QA260-P2L motorised wall mount. Designed for use with screens of 60in-90in in size, the product delivers both parallel tracking and 150° bi-directional rotation, along with an automated portrait to landscape

rotation. Building on the success of the QA2 bracket, the QA260-P2L has been designed to tackle the issue of moving and storing larger and heavier screens. The addition of a portrait to landscape swivel opens up new storage options as well as giving end users a dual use screen. Utilising infrared or RS232 control and featuring fully integrated cable management, the maker says the mount is easy to control and integrate into current home automation systems. As a key supplier for the brand, Invision says it welcomes the latest innovations from Peerless-AV’s SmartMount XT range. The SmartMount XT was conceived to offer a range of versatile and easy to install mounting solutions, getting closer to the wall and offering extra features that save the installer time and add value. Features include post installation screen roll for levelling and security options for public areas and installers also have the assurance of zero on-line sales presence. “Besides ease of installation, the beauty of the SmartMount XT lies in the 35% reduction in depth it offers,” argues Adrian Summers, sales specialist at Invision UK. “This brings the installation much closer to the wall resulting in a near seamless appearance. We feel confident that SmartMount XT offers the best solution to custom installers.” Featuring a thin, open wall plate design, SmartMount XT is made to give flexibility for cable and power cord management options and whilst the depth of the SmartMount XT range has been reduced, it still allows room for HDMI baluns. In addition, every model features ±12.5mm (0.5in) of vertical micro-adjustment, enabling screen height and roll to be modified by turning a single screw. Also available from Peerless is the ultra-slim, universal tilting wall mount, which holds the display 1inch (25mm) from the wall and offers an easy one-man installation. Attachment and detachment of the vertical adaptors with a safety clip and pull cord offers a secure and quick attachment to the wall plate, without the use of tools. Post-installation height

and roll adjustment ensure that the display can be effectively levelled after fitting, while both forward and back tilt mean the right viewing angle can be achieved. For the commercial sector, Peerless offers its Mosaic Video Wall mount (DS-VWM770), which delivers universal mounting for 46in to 70in flat panels and complete 360° rotation in 15° increments. Ten points of tool-less micro adjustment enable the fine tuning required for a seamless video wall appearance in any orientation, while the articulating arm extension from the wall allows for quick and convenient rear display access and servicing. Peerless-AV is also launching a range of ‘Quick Release’ video wall mounts designed to offer added convenience in accessing mid-array and recessed displays. This spring loaded push mechanism can be restricted with a locking screw when not needed and the carriage extension force can be adjusted to accommodate different weight of screens. Check out all the new lines on Stand H5, Hall 11 at the ISE. Vision Products is a UK company producing a full range of quality TV wall mounts at competitive prices, available to installers only. The ten most popular VISION models cover all sizes and types of TV from 14in upwards, with a choice of fixed, tilt and articulated mounts. To speed installation, the products are provided part-assembled and include an attached spirit level and cable management. The mounts are made from either high quality steel pressings or aluminium castings with a powder-coat black finish and include a full installation kit including wall fixings. All VESA mounting sizes are catered for and mounting patterns up to 820x500 can be accommodated. All of the fixed, tilt and larger articulated models include a TV locking system for safety and security where a padlock can be inserted at the owner’s discretion. This locking system is coupled to a ‘lift & hook’ mounting system making the installation of heavier models safer and easier.

Towers of Power Racks are of course a key tool in any installer’s arsenal and Habitech is keen to bring attention to the wide range of options available from Chief. The distributor says the family of products offers strength, flexibility and advanced features, being engineered from solid steel and delivering a comprehensive range of accessories and consistent thermal management options. Within industry standard 19in frames/enclosures, simple but effective rack layouts are designed to cater for the needs of each component bearing in mind cable routes, connectivity and cooling. In addition, a complementary range of custom rack-mount kits are available for popular system components, each with an adjustable clamp to securely keep components in place. Where components offer only IR control cut-outs are provided to accommodate the placement of an IR flasher. A new Habitech product guide is available providing features, part numbers and sizes for the range, which includes S1 Series ready-to-assemble racks, E1 Series enclosed racks, ROTR Series pull-out and rotate racks, W1 Series hinged on-wall racks, W2 Series fixed on-wall racks and the full range of rack-mount accessories and kits. Chief’s range of quiet fan panels support ‘assisted’/‘forced air cooling’ and help maintain the rack’s temperature by

Essential Brackets, Racking, Support and Furniture removing the ‘hotter air’ generated by components. The 3U fan panel can also be accommodated within models featuring 3U removable top panels (S1, E1, W1 and W2 series). An optional thermostat controller ensures fans only run when equipment is used. RGB has long been a supporter and distributor of the Middle Atlantic brand. All Middle Atlantic racks have practical features, such as knockouts for wiring or cooling and threaded rack rail with marked rack space increments to speed equipment mounting. RGB says the Slim 5 Series racks are popular as they are available in any height from 8 to 43U. The whole rack comes flat packed and is designed to be easily assembled offering a full array of accessories. The specially designed AXS slide out system gives access to the rear of the equipment and runs on tracks which can be locked into place during maintenance. The AXS also comes with triple hinged cable carriers to secure the cabling and maintain good cable management when the rack is moved during maintenance. Other innovative design features include the in-wall SRSR Series Rotating Sliding Rail System. The SRSR allows the installer to pull the rack out for rear access to equipment connections if built into a wall or cabinet. Available with a 19in or 23in useable depth, the SRSR system extends and rotates 90º in either direction. The company’s thermal management solutions have been designed and engineered to integrate aesthetically into any residential environment with little to no impact on the client. Technology such as thermostatic fan control ensures that systems will run optimally by monitoring system temperature and signalling fans to run automatically. One of these thermosensitive products is the component cooler, which is optimised for components on open shelving, turning on automatically when satellite/cable boxes, receivers and other heat generating components get too hot. RGB has also taken on SurgeX, manufacturer of AC power conditioning products, which offers its own advanced series mode surge elimination technology. SurgeX technology is non-sacrificial and absorbs surge energy to ensure AV equipment is protected. RGB also offers Torus Power which provides total AC supply isolation, meaning that any noise and interference is absorbed within the unit and therefore never reaches the equipment. Another solid performer here is Pro Audio Stash (PAS), recently introducing its own range of power distribution units for partnering with its range of racks. The British manufactured Octopus is an entry level racking product featuring 8 x IEC distribution outlets, surge protection and EMI (electromagnetic interference) filters. Suitable for installations where reliable power supplies are vital for protecting equipment, the maker says the Octopus delivers the consistency of British manufacturing at a competitive price. The production set up allows products to be quickly developed, adapted and customised to cater for specific requirements. The Octopus is designed to provide versatile AC and DC power distribution, with the inputs comprising of C14 fused EMI filters with additional power surge protection and the AC outs are IEC320 C13s. The DC outs are 12 way pluggable screw terminal sockets offering 3 x 5V maximum loads at 2100mA and 3 x 12V DC ins at a maximum load of 1200mA. The surge protection is handled via two 5A circuit breakers

Manufactured from real wood veneered MDF board in ash or oak finish, the racks are suited to applications in domestic or commercial settings. Available in 12U & 18U heights and two depths (600mm or 800mm), all sizes include front and rear U printed mounting profiles, quick release door hinges and medium duty castors. The company also has a wall mounted wooden cabinet option with the 414 Series. Again manufactured from real wood veneered MDF board in ash or oak, the units come in 3U, 4U, 6U, 8U, 10U & 12U heights, including mounting rack strips. Also included as part of the range is the desk top POD’s 415 Series with rubber feet to allow installation on desks. Another popular product for the home sector is the 262 T Series floor standing cabinet supplied with glass door including swing lock, rear steel door, lockable side panels, medium duty castors and base plates. Available in Black RAL 9005 or Grey RAL 7035, sizes include 12U, 18U, 27U and 37U and the products are available Ex-Stock for same day despatch, delivery 1-2 days. Available from Sanus is the Component Series AV racks which offer heavy-gauge welded steel construction, swivel casters and height-adjustable feet as well as shelves and blanking panels. The range comes pre-assembled with blanking panels and vented shelves, which include back stops to make sure equipment does not move. Quick-release back and side panels allow access to components and the racks have two 3U cut-out openings on both-top and bottom as well as a removable 3U panel that can be located above or below the rear rack door for added venting or active cooling flexibility. The CFR2136 model with additional accessories to gang racks together and make the side panels lockable is available

in 85in (44U), 70.5in (36U), 55in (27U) and 34in (15U) heights. The company’s Stackable Skeleton Racks provide height flexibility, from 15U to 40U, minimum stock holding as just two of the flat-pack units are required to cover all height options. The new models, CFR1615 (15U) and CFR1620 (20U) can be combined to make five different height combinations, 40U, 35U, 30U, 20U and 15U and Sanus says only 15 minutes is needed to construct each rack. A caster kit is available and an optional on-wall mounted swivel kit can provide increased accessibility.

Furniture expansion Premium Specialist Distribution (PSD) exclusive distributor of Sonorous, luxury AV furniture manufacturer, has announced the launch of a new Trade Ordering Service to support its growing number of install customers. Company MD, Darren Halket explains: “We have seen continual growth since the formation of our distribution arm. After feedback from both independent dealers and the custom install market, we felt it was necessary to support these channels with access to the full Sonorous product range both in terms of competitive pricing to provide a strong profit proposition, but also detailed product knowledge, support and flexibility in logistics to handle drop ship customer orders.” PSD anticipates continued growth in line with growth in premium quality furniture as many households look to replace outdated open style glass ‘oil rig’ type stands. Darren argues: “The combination of a wide range of fully assembled cabinets from the affordable Sonorous Mood Series up to the luxury Elements EX Series provide a real alternative for customers looking to add style to home, whatever their taste or budget. This is especially true given that the TV and associated home entertainment equipment are fast becoming the focal point of many a lounge.” The TV shield offers a clever approach to not only help support a TV but also protect it and bring an affordable solution to a variety of specialised placement options including outside. The TV shield encloses any TV protecting it from damage, theft, tampering and weather. Manufactured using light weight and high strength polyethylene and polycarbonate with the front using the same shatter resistant optically clear polycarbonate used in police riot shields. The front panel also has the ability to be locked. The product allows TVs to be placed in gardens, hot tub areas, pubs, outdoor exhibitions,

stadiums, hotel pools, bus stations, train stations and boats. TVs from 19 to 42in (up to 46in with some LEDs) can be accommodated using the product’s two versions. The company will be available to meet and provide more information at the ISE, call +44 (0)7807 777552 or email alex@thetvshield.co.uk to make an appointment.

Essential A Day in the Life: M.E.G.A. AV Installation

The Mix Master Zak Vracevic owner and founder of M.E.G.A AV first came to England from Serbia as a top music re-mixer, these days his focus is on finding the right mix to deliver bespoke and user friendly projects

Zak uses his knowledge of how music is created to get the best from AV kit

TV hide and reveal systems add a touch of drama to these stylish rooms

48 Essential Install

Zak’s background is in music, achieving success in his home of Serbia as a musician before trying his luck on the London music scene in 1986. Zak eventually became a successful re-mixer for top artists such as Kylie, Gloria Estefan, Bob Marley and many others, but when the music industry changed with the coming of online, the AV work took over. Zak says: “Around the same time as the mixing work was coming to an end, I was looking to have some AV work done on my place. I spoke to a few people who explained that certain things I wanted to achieve were not possible, with my experience of professional AV studios, I knew they were, so I installed my own system. “The project was seen by a friend of my wife who asked who had done the install as she wanted something similar for her home. So around 12 years ago that is how I got started.” Zak explains: “Those first few projects were a big learning curve, but my background in professional studios helped immensely with being able to achieve great sound and picture. I was also involved in mixing movie tracks, so had always had access to the best in screening room equipment as well as audio. “These days I like to concentrate on the larger projects and leave the smaller ones alone. I find that they can often take as much effort, be as demanding, but of course are less profitable.” Early projects involved a property in Putney where two flats on top of each other were converted into one dwelling, which involved the installation of an Imerge server, Denon AVR, Panasonic plasma and an Opus 500 system. Zak says: “We did quite few Opus 500 projects in the early years and despite a few problems with the sensitivity of the amps to power fluctuations, found it to be a good system. We were also big users of Philips Pronto in the early days and all those projects are still up and running.” “Most of my clients are big music lovers and I guess my skill is achieving for them the best sound they can have for

their budget. This does not always mean chucking as much money at the equipment as possible. Understanding how music is created and how rooms react, means I know that if you are going to spend over £25,000 on an AV set up, you need to treat the room as well. I have seen so many projects, where money has been poured into the equipment, without a proper understanding of how audio in particular really works and the client does not get the right performance. A properly set up system with carefully placed speakers, serviced with key ingredients like stable power and good cables, can sound amazing without having to over specify and break the bank.” Zak adds: “These days all the equipment is getting cheaper and better, so choosing the right kit has become a little easier. Consequently, the need to get the installation and set-up correct has never been more important.” Equipment wise Zak is a big fan of the NuVo multi-room music system citing its ease of use, rock-solid reliability,

Essential A Day in the Life: M.E.G.A. AV Installation

Zak has a whole host of satisfied customers created by delivering genuinely bespoke systems for each project

access to Internet radio and general ease of install and compatibility with third party equipment as important aspects. He is also impressed with NuVo’s loudness algorithm and general sound, which takes the product beyond systems like Sonos for listening quality. “I also like the Panasonic PT-AT6000E projector for its price to performance ratio. Whilst we also use brands like JVC, I find lots of people are happy with Panasonic. In general it’s really important to specify only to the level at which the customer can appreciate and notice the difference.” Zak explains: “Also I have always been a big fan of plasma in general. Kuro in the early days (still the best in my opinion, even now) and more lately Panasonic’s top models. So naturally it’s a disappointment that Panasonic will be pulling out of plasma, but we are exploring new screens like Samsung LEDs and some of LG’s products. “We are also just getting into URC Total Control. I have had a long relationship with AWE and we are finding the platform a really good one, easy to programme and with lots of Apple compatibility. I also love the fact I can get on the phone and Mal Fisher of the technical team there will always come back to me with a solution for any problem.” The Chord company is also a key partner for the company as Zak is a big believer in giving the signals the best chance with high quality cables. Newer technologies is an area where the company is more cautious. Zak comments: “All this stuff on curved screens? I think a lot of it is just manufacturers coming up with a new gimmick to sell more screens, I can’t see curved screens working in the installation market. “Also 4K I am yet to be convinced on. There is no content and although there is up-scaling, I tend to rely on the great performance you can get with existing technology, for which there is loads of content for people to enjoy!” Once the kit is chosen Zak makes sure everything is set up and tested before going to site: “I find if there is a problem with hardware it will show up pretty quickly, so setting up everything and testing it before installation is a good way to avoid issues afterwards. Back up is also a huge part of what I offer. All my clients get two years support for free. It’s something that they really appreciate and wins me new custom all the time.”

Getting the work Zak explains: “A lot the work comes from architects and interior designers. My wife being a designer and architect herself means I have good contacts in that area and the quality of the work and the fact that we try to only specify exactly what the client needs, wins us many friends. “We also like to have a say in how the room looks. Providing bespoke built cabinets for large screen TVs for example, does not cost that much, but can take the install up a notch.” Zak is currently nearing the end of a project for an existing client who is renovating a Chateau in the Bordeaux region of France. The project consists of a large multi-room NuVo music system and an impressive home cinema and listening room. The client is also a huge two channel fan so also needs assistance in setting up his prized valve amp based stereo equipment. Zak is particularly proud of the home cinema room, which boasts a 150in 4K Enlightor screen from Screen Excellence, a product he is particularly impressed with. Next project in the pipeline is for a prince from the Emirates region who is setting up a home in London. This project will involve a stand-alone home cinema, an IP TV system and multi-room music controlled from iPads. Even here, where the client is wealthy, the property will only be in use for a few months of the year, so Zak is careful to give them only what they need and not over specify. Zak concludes that the market is definitely showing signs of picking up, with more enquiries coming in than in the previous 12 months. So a busy day beckons with a meeting to finaslise the final push on the Chateaux project and some more planning for the Emirates client. Essential Q&A

Read Adair Chris Adair of Adair Acoustic Design is the first challenger of 2014 to take on the titanic tussle of the Essential Install Q&A. and a cinema where the seats cost more than the entire AV system (excepting the control system). That’s rather like selling someone a Bentley with a fiat 500 engine and bicycle wheels, looks the business, but actually has rubbish performance. You can invite three people living or dead out for a pint (not including family and friends) who and why? Tesla – to talk about his way of understanding electricity, though really I am interested in the conspiracy theories that surround the latter part of his life. Dali Laama (but would he be tempted by a pint in the pub?) Either way he’s one of the wisest men – keeps calm under extreme pressure Phillip Glass – I find his music powerfully moving and full of images, his pieces require collaboration with a diverse array of great artists. Chris Adair would like to have a pint with the Dali Laama and educate Paul McCartney on real audio quality

What are you doing right now? At home sitting beside the fire with my daughter making an art piece. She’s asking when I’m going to set up the cinema system (recently moved house). If you were not involved in AV, what would you be doing? Precisely the same, except she would be asking when I’m going to pay an AV installer to set up the cinema. What project are you most proud of in your career and why? A recent system that combined the best of performance with great usability, beautifully installed and amazing to use. The client was delighted and best of all it has been remarkably reliable! What is the worst thing (outside of your control) that has ever gone wrong on a project? A very ambitious project in 1999 in Cyprus, nightmare electrician, overseas, ‘tomorrow’ was his stock answer. Used the wrong cables, created his own numbering system starting at 1 for each room, but didn’t think to identify each room... What is the best thing about working in CI/AV? I love the client contact related to the shared passion for music/movies and technology. What one thing could the industry collectively do to improve its standing and profitability? Raise their game – promote quality of performance. Most installers cut back on the audio, many don’t even know where to place speakers for optimal performance and roll over for the architect to make it all look great for as cheap as possible, so you end up with supermarket quality sound

You can only watch one movie and listen to one album for the rest of your life, what are they? Koyaanisqatsi (would have said Space Odyssey 2001 but I wouldn’t like to wear out the magic of the movie) Music – well I experimented with this as my favourite album is The Swans – The Burning World, but after repeating the disc in my car for 10 end to end’s a couple of tracks started to lose their appeal, so I’ll choose New Order’s Movement. What is your favourite piece of AV/CI kit on the market right now? Savant Control System You have just opened an AV showroom, how did the launch go? Why now? And what will the store feature? The launch went very well, now the hard work starts! The store will feature a strong, clear select range of Hi-Fi, but unusually we are putting a major effort into headphones and ‘desktop Hi-Fi’. There is a huge interest in headphones and we want to take the Hi-Fi angle on it – listen to them to judge which offer the best value for money. Did you know the manufacturing cost of a pair of £299 Beats Headphones? yes less than a cup of espresso! It’s quite surprising what a great sound you can achieve with headphones without a huge budget, but the idea is to cross market into the home Hi-Fi sales. What is the next big project you have coming up? We’re completing a large house for a well-known pop star for end of January 2014. What’s great is he’s put the emphasis on sound quality – so a large collection of PMC speakers are going in. You may think it’s obvious that a pop star would be concerned about sound quality, but you’d be surprised…for example Paul McCartney, with all his experience, is raving about B&O! Essential LG

LG’s CI ambition EI spoke with UK commercial director CE at LG Electronics, Andy Mackay and representatives from the company’s two CI distributors (Invision and AWE) to understand better the company’s recent move to target the CI sector.

OLED and curved screen technology will also be on offer to the CI sector

Essential Install (EI): Could you explain why you have chosen this time to target the CI market? Andy Mackay (AM): “LG is currently working with key partners who can add value to our business. With LG being at the forefront of innovative technology, it is important that we are driving these key core technologies with premium partners.” EI: What do you feel are the current key products in the range for custom installers? AM: “LG is a true industry leader, developing new and exciting technologies that shape the TV category, with the Curved OLED and ULTRA HD 4K family of TVs. LG’s current home entertainment range also boasts the flagship Cinema Screen Smart TV series, that combine sleek and stylish design with the latest Smart TV platform, premium Apps and services.”

LG has a full complement of Smart TV technologies increasingly important to end users

EI: What products do you have coming in the future that will be of interest to installers? AM: “2014 will be the year of ‘Picture Perfect’, as ULTRA HD 4K TVs expand rapidly and OLED technology becomes established.

We will also see more developments in curved screen technology, with distinctive designs and innovative hardware. “Finally, smart, connected technology will continue to evolve and bring a new focus on enhancing the smart entertainment solution for the home. All these cutting edge developments offer huge potential for installers looking to create bespoke solutions for clients.” EI: There are connection protocols that CI’s look for (RS232, IP) as LG has these connections on its commercial products, will they be added to domestic ones? AM: “LG understands the requirements of the custom installer market and the need to be able to have full control on the TV using third party control systems. That’s why in 2014 LG has worked to offer an RS232 solution via USB. With a Serial to USB adapter, integrators will be able to control the TVs as if there were a RS232 port on the back of the TV itself.” Adrian Summers, sales specialist Invision UK: “This is fantastic news for the CI community and really highlights the work done between Invision and LG to give installers the products they have been demanding.” (Ed, the USB solution will be available from Invision and AWE) EI: What steps has LG taken to shift its perception towards a more premium brand in the mind of the consumer? AM: “Already this year LG has advertised its leading UHD TV and the end of 2013 saw LG launch its new TV advertising campaign, focusing on the flagship LG Curved OLED 55EA980W. This is a truly innovative and stand-out product that showcases the brand’s continued commitment to R&D and premium product development – something we’re keen to show off to our key distribution partners as well as consumers. LG also works closely with its key distribution partners, ensuring that we always deliver cutting edge technology to the highest standard, to cement the brand’s premium position. Central to our marketing strategy in 2014 will be driving understanding of new smart technologies

Essential LG and communicating clear benefits to consumers and LG’s premium branded products. Digital will of course also play an increasingly important role in 2014, as we develop the story of ultimate picture quality via social media channels.” Andy Mackay, UK commercial director – CE at LG Electronics says the company has big plans for the CI sector

EI: What sort of time scale do you think we are looking at in terms of a significant amount of native 4K material being available? AM: “ULTRA HD 4K represents the future of immersive home entertainment and, as with all new developments, will take a while to pass from the realm of the early adopters to mass participation. ULTRA HD 4K content is undoubtedly growing, with broadcasters and film houses exploring how best to support this new, more immersive format. In the meantime, existing owners of LG’s 84LM960V ULTRA HD 4K TV can enjoy their HD programmes in exceptional picture quality due to LG’s built-in Ultra HD Resolution Upscaler. “Using a sophisticated four stage data analysis, this feature takes content of lesser image quality and renders it in high detail, enabling people to enjoy all their favourite TV, movies, sports and games in breath taking definition. “LG is also pioneering the introduction of mainstream ULTRA HD content by working with broadcasters. At CES 2013, LG demonstrated the progress it has made to develop ULTRA HD content and expressed its interest in forming partnerships with further broadcasters.” EI: Can you take us through some of the key performance characteristics of the 84LM960V ULTRA HD 4K TV? AM: “The sheer size of the display, which is equal to four 42in TVs, will give a breath-taking viewing experience. The scale of motion pictures will be so stunning; you will feel that you are in the scene. Naturally, it is incredibly immersive, vivid and crisp, even when viewed from close distances. “To deliver the ultimate viewing experience, LG is committed to combining the best in picture quality with the best in sound. With 2.2 speakers, LG UD Smart 3D TV has two woofers that offer incredible depth and liveliness in sound as in vision.”

EI: What does 800Hz MCI (Motion Clarity Index) processing bring to the party? AM: “The LG 84LM960V is endorsed by the Imaging Science Foundation calibration organisation and provides consumers with access to a full colour management and white balance system. Thanks to 800Hz MCI processing, 3D images are incredibly sharp, as well as fast moving 2D images/action scenes.” EI: What training/support is available on the product? Help with delivering/Installing such a large device? AM: “LG champions a ‘White Glove Service’ whereby LG’s retail partners will work with key custom installers to ensure consumers who have purchased an LG TV are provided with the most premium service - from the retail experience to the moment it is set-up in-home.” EI: What is the view of the potential for the brand from the distributors? Adrian Summers – Invision UK: “Working closely with Peter Unsworth, account manager at LG, has enabled Invision to really push the LG brand to the Custom Install sector. The forum we had with LG at Mercedes Benz World a while back was a great event and really gave the CI sector something to think about when specifying TV brands and LG’s increased focus on our business area.” Stuart Tickle, MD of AWE, says: “Since our distribution agreement began with LG earlier in 2013, we have been really pleased with the uptake of the brand throughout our dealer network. The 960 series of cinema screens, not to mention the stunning 84LM960V are stand-out products that deserve special attention. “In addition, as we offer screens as large as the 84in 4K LG unit, we felt it necessary to offer our trade dealer base specification, site survey, delivery and installation support for all large screen TV projects, which is why we established our Technical Services Division.” More Information: LG +44 (0)1753 491500, www.lg.com/uk

Essential Tech²O

TV Special Joe Allen, commercial and operations director, Tech²O, explains his company’s interesting take on the specialist TV market. Essential Install (EI): How did the company get started, what was the aim at launch? Joe Allen (JA): “Tech²O was formed in 2008 by three technology-mad entrepreneurs, who were not willing to settle for the common restraints experienced by the typical television sets. Over the course of a five year period, the company has strived to create a wide product range, covering various applications for televisions. The company’s flagship product is the bathroom television, which has allowed us to learn the core competencies in mirror screen technology and waterproof construction. Based on these foundations, our company has gone on to develop a wide product family to satisfy a range of applications.” EI: Who are the main people involved and what are their roles? JA: “Tech²O is a small, close-knit team – still managed by the same three guys who set up the company in 2008. Ben Allen’s role is to cover product development as well as managing the manufacturing, quality control and supplychain processes. I take responsibility for the commercial development of the company. This involves taking responsibility of both on and offline sales and marketing strategies. Jonathan Hardy’s role is in field sales, where he is responsible for building relationships with customers and re-sellers.” Tech²O offers a wide range of specialist TV options including bathroom and living room sets

Essential digital signage

A good sign Offering increasing opportunities in the light commercial sector, digital signage is well worth investigating as a useful addition source of income. EI takes a look at some of the key players.

Brightsign products are used in many high-profile retail DS installs

Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign, a popular brand of digital signage (DS) solutions, says: “Bricks and mortar retailers need to counter the online shopping trend by making visiting their stores a real experience for customers and once the customers are in the store, they need to close the sale before they leave. Digital signage can help with both. Screen based promotions are becoming easier and cheaper than ever to install. A screen and player can be set up for under £500 and the latest interactive technology can be integrated to the point of sale to close the deal on the spot, from the customer’s tablet or smartphone, even when the store is closed.” BrightSign has recently announced some upgrades to its own capabilities with new software and firmware for its BrightSign XD line of solid-state players. Features include the ability to up-scale 1080p video content to 4K, enhanced IP streaming and some useful HTML5 support features. These improvements, included in the release of BrightAuthor 3.7 software and its companion 4.7 firmware, are available to all existing and future users free of charge. Using a pre-release version of the software, BrightSign says its customers are already taking advantage of the new features. 4K display manufacturer Seiki Digital, Inc. demonstrated the impact of BrightSign XD’s video engine, paired with the new software features at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin. Sung Choi, vice president of marketing for Seiki Digital brand, explained: “BrightSign’s new 4K up-scaling feature enabled us to use settings in BrightAuthor to get the best

possible resolution 1080p content playing on our new 4K UHD screens. We demonstrated the same 1080p content on a full HD display side-by-side with one of our new 4K displays. This high-impact demonstration clearly showcased the superior picture quality delivered by BrightSign to our 4K screens.” Integration specialist National Technology Associates is already using the enhanced IP streaming features to deliver video over IP to hundreds of displays in Station Casinos, locations in Nevada in the US. Other additions on the BrightAuthor 3.7 software upgrade include support for full HD video streaming including HLS, SHOUTcast, video streaming in HTML, as well as playback from head-end real-time encoders such as Haivision, Exterity, Visionary Solutions and other devices that provide UDP/RTP/ RTSP streaming. In addition, XD players can now act as IP streaming servers for streaming locally stored content files. BrightSign is also now able to offer a hardwareaccelerated HTML5 engine delivering a more versatile HTML experience without encountering stuttering. BrightSign XD also allows for HTML assets to exist on the BrightSign canvas as independent packages, as opposed to one flat HTML page. This means that HTML5 can be seamlessly integrated with other content, so that transparent HTML widgets, like clocks, weather feeds, tickers, etc can be used without the need to integrate them into a complete HTML page. The upgrade also introduces JavaScript extensions that allow the capabilities of the BrightSign engine to be used via HTML and JavaScript allowing access to serial IO, UDP events, GPIO, CEC and TV tuning. Another useful ally in the DS space is Intevi, a company that can offer a whole range of digital media services and solutions. A recent release offers the combination of DS and IPTV services. The Intevi idt concept, by using a single solution to achieve TV distribution and digital signage, enables Intevi to hit a new price level and means the onsite installation time is shortened, benefiting the integrator and end user.

Essential digital signage

Using the Intevi idt concept installers can deliver feature rich multi-media environments mixing DS and TV content

60 Essential Install

The idt solution is the first in a new series named Intevi idx and allows businesses, leisure centres, hotels and bars to centrally control any number of live TV channels, overlay specific video zones with branding and broadcast simultaneously to an unlimited number of screens using standard network cabling. By using existing network cabling to transmit video signals, the platform eliminates the need to install coax cabling to each screen. Instead the TV aerial is fed into an idt Ministreamer, which uses a quick and simple setup process to scan for multiplexes, select channels and broadcast as multicast IP. An idt receiver then converts the incoming IP signals back to traditional HDMI video for high HD viewing. The ‘brains’ of the IPTV system is a centralised management and content distribution software engine that controls what TV channels and messaging is seen at each screen. It also provides playback looping, scheduling and day-parting support as well as usage tracking stats. The receiver’s in-built graphical layer allows an administrator to overlay and customise dynamic content with transparent images, logos, real-time promotions, scrolling text messages, RSS and Twitter feeds, breaking news or weather. These can then be triggered independently from a separate paging application or via a web connection or iPad App. The system can also be used to deliver pre-defined corporate messaging, such as fire alarm instructions, sandwich van arrival, administration or IT helpdesk updates. Larger corporates can also use the system to deliver company-wide messages to screens, PC’s and laptops.

The company is also keen to underline the support available for the platform. Owner and co-founder of Intevi, Adam Wilson, says: “We have an in-house professional services team that is available for our customers to utilise offering initial consultancy, on-site installation/ commissioning, customer training and on-going support and maintenance. With content being king, we also have an in-house graphic designer who can deliver media assets. We also offer monthly training courses on all our product sets to ensure our partners have the skills and knowledge to implement our solutions themselves if required. Any customer of Intevi also has the use of our internal support desk to ensure they are never without assistance when required.” AMX can offer much to the installer interested in DS as a recent example at the Birmingham Hippodrome shows. With a regular annual attendance of over 500,000 visitors, the site sees some serious footfall. Enter systems integrator Inspire Tech and an innovative application of technology, which is helping to keep the Hippodrome’s visitors informed and entertained. Inspire Tech worked with Push The Button (PTB), responsible for the project management, supply and installation of the screens, cabling and custom metal work, to enhance the venue with AMX’s Inspired Signage solution. The digital signage provision begins in the entrance hall where an 11 screen ribbon across new doors into the main reception and box office area displays information about forthcoming and current shows. At the box office, signage is used for both way-finding and queue management whilst two displays located behind the box office area are used for general signage. Each of the three box office positions has its own screen and Inspired Signage player, which are used to advertise its function i.e. sales or pre-booked ticket collection etc. Local control is provided by eight-button AMX Novara CP-1008 keypads, which allow operators to change the signage as necessary and also to call-forward. “It was this level of functionality and control capability that set the AMX Inspired Signage solution apart from the rest.” explains Andy Wilmott, Inspire Tech Ltd. The project also offers three video walls, each with their own signage player and each comprising of six 55in LG screens provide an alternative to the traditional six- sheet, 12ft x 4ft advertising

Essential digital signage boards which used to be in-situ. In the front of house bar, relay screens can be used as a platform for additional advertising or for a live feed from the auditorium camera via an AMX HDMI UTPro 8 x 8 matrix switcher, DXLink receivers and a centrally-located NI-2100 controller. The installation of DXLink HDMI transmitters and receivers also allows the system to accept local inputs; affording the Hippodrome the opportunity to sell foyer space to third parties so that they can then display their own presentations during events. Portrait-mounted screens installed at each auditorium door provide a platform on which the management can communicate to the audience and display important alert notifications. AMX’s Inspired Composer user interface enables the creation an unlimited portfolio of schedules with start and end times that match requirements. Schedules can be configured to draw content from a variety of sources, individually or in combination and schedule changes can be made days, weeks or seconds in advance. Providing the technological brains behind the Hippodrome’s signage solution, the NI-2100 central controller allows all the screens and players to become integrated as part of a unified digital signage solution. The integration of a NXV-300 Modero Virtual Touch Panel gives Andy at Inspire Tech the ability to remotely access and monitor the whole project. Local control is provided by an in-house iPad, which connects as a native AMX device to the NetLinx master. Another interesting project, this time in the retail sector, was recently completed for the largest shopping mall in Luxembourg by Pyramid Computer creating a way-finding digital signage/kiosk solution. Directing visitors around the centre’s 105 shops, the heart of the system is based around polytouch self-service multitouch kiosks from Pyramid in conjunction with interactive software from 3d-berlin. Situated in the four entrance areas, 32in polytouch kiosk systems offer visitors a simple plan of the shopping centre to facilitate orientation and provide directions to individual stores. They also offer additional search functions so that visitors can look up online information about each store. This service also enables the centre’s management team to conduct detailed evaluations on way-finding using visitor behaviour metrics. The system allows users to search for different categories and once the desired destination is found, shows the fastest route. The screens also provide space for advertising opportunities and special promotions.

62 Essential Install

The polytouch kiosk systems use light insensitive projected capacitive touch technology, which the maker says offers reliability and a highly responsive performance. The system also gives the shopping centre the flexibility to implement configuration changes easily and to adapt their systems to support cashless payments, card readers, barcode scanners and other future standards as required. A printer module is planned in the near future, so that visitors can print out directions. Few retail spaces are as iconic as London’s Harrods, so software developers Digitact Ltd were delighted to be given the task of implementing a series of MultiTaction screens into the store from MultiTouch, maker of modular multi-touch LCD screens for large-scale displays. In this case two 55in MultiTaction Cells have been used to create an interactive media platform called BeautyTouch for retailer Urban Retreat. The solution offers a 360° solution to interactive retail marketing for brands looking to give their customers an exciting in-store experience. BeautyTouch helps sales assistants keep customers engaged for longer, deliver brand messaging on demand and lengthens the window of opportunity to encourage a customer to make a purchase. By using gesture technology and Enriched Reality – MultiTouch’s own object recognition technology – the system lets consumers browse, share, email, give feedback and request further information about on-screen content in real time.

Make technology bite with Adder Designer and manufacture of KVM switches, extenders and IP solutions which enable control of local, remote and global IT systems, Adder Technology, has clear insight into what makes DS systems tick. John Halksworth, senior product manager at the company says: “In the digital signage space there are a number of factors that must be considered in ensuring smooth, efficient and cost-effective operation. In public areas the technology behind the digital signage should ideally be located elsewhere due to security reasons. To facilitate this, an extension solution is required to link the screens to the computers, sometimes over great distances. Adder uses IP in its Proof of Display (P.O.D.) technology that is incorporated into the AdderLink HDMI extender range. P.O.D. forms part of the remote monitoring functionality and enables users and advertisers to ensure that the correct signal is being sent to the screen and is being displayed correctly. In the public space, power sources can also be seen as a challenge. Line powered extenders can be used to overcome this challenge, taking power directly from the computer’s USB port so no additional power supplies are needed.

Mark Trickett, director at Unicam, says: “Screen technologies have become a fundamental part of the marketing and communication mix now adopted globally by leading brands, corporations and retailers. “There really isn’t an area of any market sector now that doesn’t already have or aspire to have these sorts of systems in place to promote services, enhance their environment and strengthen the corporate message. Unicam sources its screens from a wide variety of channels both locally in Europe and direct from China in order to make the research and selection process easier. All the technologies on offer are backed up with free technical support and nationwide engineer assistance if required. RGB has the proNestor brand of interactive digital displays, which can provide room booking information outside of meeting rooms, in meeting areas and at reception, pulling data from both Microsoft Exchange and Google Calendar. The technology shows meeting room bookings on wall-mounted tablets, multiple meeting room activities on larger displays and is hardware independent so is available on smartphones or tablets. RGB says proNestor Display is a good looking, professional digital signage system that is sure to impress visitors, especially since it can support a company’s branding for an improved corporate image and offer a variety of software options to make the system a complete, scalable and flexible solution. Kramer Electronics has solutions for distributing content from digital or analogue sources, over long distances, to multiple screens, encompassing media distribution, network management, content management and proof−of− performance on various digital signage platforms. Kramer owns exclusive marketing, distribution, development, and manufacturing rights to the successful Minicom Digital Signage line, which includes the DS Vision Digital, a distribution system for HDMI and Display Port signals to as many as 16 screens over long distances based on HDBaseT technology. The product family also offers the DS Vision 3000, a management and distribution system for HD signals from analogue (VGA) sources over distances up to 600m and hundreds of screens. Kramer’s offering also includes a number of video over

IP streaming products that allow transmission of HD signals to an unlimited number of screens over virtually unlimited distances, using existing network and cabling infrastructure. In the light commercial sector, Kramer says its digital signage solutions enhance in-store customer experience, providing an infrastructure that increases retail sales and expands brand awareness. In Quick Service Restaurants, for example, its products are able to deliver all kinds of menu information, as well as entertainment messages to multiple screens, an ability that plays a significant role in increasing sales and revenues through ads and promotions. Check out all the options at the ISE stand 1-F20. NEC offers its E-Series and the V-Series of screens for DS use. The maker says both are ideal for entry level digital signage installations offering configurability, reliability and longevity. The E-Series is a range of affordable commercial LED backlit LCD public displays well-suited for light signage applications requiring up to 12 hours a day operation.

Essential AWE

A NEW AND IMPROVED AWE Paul Mott, sales director at AWE, introduces the company’s new look and brand new HQ.

AWE has revealed its new logo

Unless you have been hiding from the CI world for the last few months, then you won’t have failed to notice that we have changed premises and completely revamped our logo. The new AWE headquarters will still be situated in the central location of Epsom, Surrey and will be entirely self-contained, with offices, a showroom, training facilities and a warehouse, all under one roof. The new building, ‘Alexander House’, will not only allow us to hold increased stock levels, enhancing our service, but also provide an exciting new space for our customers, suppliers and members of staff. The new training facility has also been made bigger and better, with a multitude of integrated equipment to help make our award-winning courses even more comprehensive than before. In addition, a showroom is being constructed to showcase our portfolio of products like never before.

Creating identity

2km of Kinetik Labs speaker cable has gone into making Alexander House a fully automated building in its own right

We have also completely overhauled our corporate identity to fit in with the exciting new company developments and are thrilled to be able to reveal our brand new company logo. It was extremely important for our logo to reflect the new company personality - clean lines and a modern look, just like our new HQ!

The old company logo is recognised by many in the industry, so redesigning it was a difficult decision to make. However, there are several advantages to the new branding and we feel that the time is now right to progress to the next phase of the company’s development. We can also reveal that Alexander House, will be completely automated by a URC Total Control system, spanning across multiple audio and video zones. In addition, URC TKP-7000 touch-screens will keep these areas in perfect harmony, whatever the situation. The building also features the latest lighting technology by Philips and control by Philips Dynalite, with the latest super-stylish Antumbra keypads. Our very own Kinetik Labs brand has been utilised within the new building. Nearly every single room contains at least one Kinetik speaker, covered within the ceiling cavity by a Kinetik fire hood, which not only improves sound quality but also conforms to Building Regulations. A staggering 2km of Kinetik speaker cable has been used thus far. The last piece of the puzzle is a new website. We are working on it now and it is starting to take shape. We aim for this to be launched in the New Year. Providing improved functionality, alongside a wealth of product information and new photography, will mean that it is even easier for our trade customers to get exactly the right products they need, when they need them. To watch the new building take shape, follow @awe_europe and the hashtag #awemove on Twitter. More information: AWE Europe: +44 (0)1372 729777 www.awe-europe.com

The company’s new HQ will offer the perfect showcase for AWE’s brands and increase stock holding

Pre-configured to work with the CYP PU-507RX or PU-507WPRX HDBaseT receivers, which are powered using the PoE feature from the matrix, both models are supplied with dual removable internal power supplies, allowing for easy inspection and maintenance with zero downtime. In addition, each bank of eight HDMI inputs (2 x PU-16HBT and 1 x PU8H16HBT) and two banks of eight HDBaseT outputs are also easily exchangeable were maintenance or replacement is required. This approach means installers can create a sixteen-zone AV multi-room system with the knowledge that any maintenance will result in minimum disruption for the user. To aid set up and configuration, a DVI output for a local monitor is included allowing installers to easily test all inputs and outputs, whilst IP control allows for remote access and integration into third party control systems such as DemoPad.

An extra helping of Extra Vegetables

AWE and Extra Vegetables offer installers the chance to marry Total Control to Sonos

AWE has announce it will be providing Extra Vegetables’ new two-way Sonos integration module for URC Total Control. Sonos continues to be popular with installers providing a flexible and easy to install entry point for multi-room music systems as well as offering support for streaming services including Spotify, Napster, last.fm, Deezer, MOG and TuneIn. The Extra Vegetables module provides complete two-way control of a Sonos system from Total Control touch-panels, remotes and iOS Apps. This includes Sonos Play:3/5, Connect, Connect:Amp and the new PlayBar. The system allows the user to browse and search artist, album and track details on Total Control interfaces and ‘selected’ in Total Control is immediately reflected in the Sonos Desktop Controller and vice-versa. The user can also add favourite tracks from music services to Sonos Favourites and join zones in Total Control or via the Sonos Desktop Controller, with changes reflected in both. Mal Fisher, technical manager at AWE, says: “The opportunity offered to customers by the Extra Vegetables module creates a completely integrated solution, which brings their favourite music services perfectly in-line with their favourite control system.” More Information: AWE Europe: +44 (0)1372 729777, www.awe-europe.com

Live Doublewide with Antiference

Antiference says it now offers the UK’s widest choice of DVB-T modulators

Antiference says it has launched the UK’s most extensive range of DVB-T modulators with its Conexer modulator range featuring the DMSD multiple input SD products and the DMHD01 HDMI HD DVB-T/C model with IP streaming. The Conexer DMHD01 HDMI modulator generates an HD channel from any HDMI source which can be supplied over a coaxial network to TVs or STBs. The product is compatible with all Freeview HD TVs/STBs and the modulator is also compatible with most Freeview TVs. The DMHD01 is configurable as a digital terrestrial DVB-C digital cable TV modulator or as an IP streamer for multicast streaming. The IP streamer supports UDP and RTP on a local computer network. Input options for the HD modulator include: HDMI, component AV, VGA (PC) & analogue L & R audio. Inputs for the SD modulators are composite AV (scart) on RCA connections. All models have an RF input loop through which can be used to ‘loop’ multiple units together and the LCN function which allows the user to set the location in the channel guide for the services. The DMHD01 & DMSD01 are both fully programmable via an LCD screen menu system and all models can be programmed via Windows based USB software which can be downloaded from the company website. A pleasant stay with Legrand

The new Legrand guest room management system offers increased control, comfort and efficiency

Legrand has launched a guest room management system that it says provides ease of use, customisation and control for guests, reception staff or the hotel head office. Fully compatible with Fidelio, Suite and Opera hotel reservation systems, the system is designed to optimise comfort, energy efficiency and aesthetics providing intuitive, ease of use for guests and control of individual rooms, floors or the whole building for the hotel. Pre-programmed with an entry scenario (access control,

temperature set and courtesy light) and exit scenario (temperature set, lights off), the room settings can be altered to suit the guest’s requirements when they make their reservation, when they check in or when they arrive. Guests can select from a number of pre-set scenarios, including comfort (do not disturb, temperature set, dimmer), sleeping (do not disturb, lights off) and eco scenarios (open window, eco temperature). These settings can be monitored and controlled by the hotel’s reception, enabling lights to be switched off or heating to be turned down while the room is vacant and can be linked to the hotel’s building management and HVAC system via KNX or BACnet. Designed to offer co-ordination with Legrand’s Arteor and Synergy ranges of wiring accessories, the system enables centralised control of the room with an eight button unit that can be customised with the hotel’s choice of symbols and branding. The unit can be used in combination with manual switching in the room or remote access by hotel staff. More information: Legrand +44 (0)870 6089000 www.legrand.co.uk

Available from Genesis Technologies in the UK, Stealth Acoustics is introducing the latest addition to its ‘StingRay’ family of advanced, all-weather outdoor speakers. Combining quality audio performance and reliability with a discreet, easy to conceal design, the manufacturer says the compact Stingray 6 will open up new business opportunities for European installers, especially when working in confined spaces. So named because of its 6in cone woofer, StingRay 6 is still only 15in wide, 7in tall and less than 4in in depth, so can be easily hidden in outdoor environments to provide audio for swimming pool, garden, spa, cinema projects, as well as themed entertainment and industrial paging applications. Offered in stock, matt white and flat black colours, the StingRay 6 can also be fully customised using paint or exterior vinyl graphics to blend seamlessly into any architectural or design-led environment. Audio quality is promoted via the cone woofer, coupled with a high-power, neodymium tweeter to create a true

two-way speaker, which is designed to provide even sound dispersion at frequencies from 50Hz to 18kHz. There are no grilles or other openings to allow moisture into the enclosure as the speaker uses Stealth’s FidelityGlass solid-front radiating surface enclosed in a fibre-infused ASA plastic marine-grade enclosure, resulting in an environmental protection rating of IP-68 as measured to IEC standards. Surround yourself with Meridian

The G65 Surround Controller was created to be the beating heart of a Meridian Digital Theatre

Meridian Audio has announced the introduction of the new-design G65 Surround Controller, billed as the definitive surround processor of the G Series. In conjunction with the Meridian HD621, the unit allows connection of a diverse range of audio and video sources with unified control over time alignment, bass management and surround sound processing. The G65 builds on the achievements of the flagship 800 Series, with new circuitry developed specifically for the product. Designed to sit at the heart of a Meridian Digital Theatre, the G65 is designed to drive Meridian DSP Loudspeakers as well as providing balanced analogue outputs for conventional systems. Meridian technologies include Smart Source, which automatically selects the correct settings for optimum listening, whilst Meridian’s Apodising up-sampling system improves audio quality and can correct problems in an original digital recording. Meridian Room Correction dampens low-frequency reverberation in the room to improve clarity and imaging. The G65 also includes new menu features to seamlessly control Enhanced Bass Alignment as well as Centre Elevation found in Meridian’s DSP Loudspeaker range. The model also features a card-based construction using seven-layer boards making it possible to build cards to handle specific audio tasks, rather than using large multifunction boards. Configuration is achieved by running Meridian’s proprietary Windowsbased MConfig application, connected to the G65 via a serial or USB link or direct from the front panel. A comprehensive back-lit learning/ programmable MSR+ remote is included. More information: Meridian +44 (0)1480 445678 www.meridian-audio.com

Simple Audio has announced the release of a new free of charge iPad App and more updates to the Roomplayer App. Simple Audio released its first HD streaming products last year offering high-quality sound and a unique multi-user, multi-library approach. The new update builds on this with the release of a new iPad App, which promises to give the user easier access to their music. Also released is a new look desktop application for Mac and Windows that takes the system to a new level of flexibility. The Simple Audio iPad App gives access to personal digital music collections, online music services and favourite Internet radio stations. Anyone can download the App, create a user profile and view all the music or just their playlists and favourites. The App for Windows and Mac puts the focus clearly on users’ and music with a new white interface, which is designed to make artwork as well as album and artist information stand out, whilst updates to user profiles make it easier for multiple users to set up their own profile, view music libraries and personalise their own view of their music. The intuitive search brings back results from local music libraries or subscribed streaming services. Plus the new sleek capability is designed particularly with classical music lovers in mind. Both Apps also provide access to the 30 million tracks available on the Deezer online platform. More Information: Simple Audio +44 (0)141 4405220 www.simpleaudio.com
