From the

Editor’s Desk A Powerful Combination EI is delighted this month to welcome into the ‘comment chair’ Jason Knott, editor-in-chief of CE Pro, who discusses the exciting potential of All Things Media, the new European home of Essential Install and soon to launch Ce Pro and Commercial Integrator. It was playwright George Bernard Shaw who famously quipped tongue-in-cheek: “England and America are two countries separated by the same language.” But today that separation is gone because the custom installation industry throughout the U.S., Great Britain and Europe is now speaking the same language. The groundbreaking creation of All Things Media means the entire industry now has a united voice for the industry with the combined resources of Essential Install and EH Publishing’s CE Pro and Commercial Integrator. Our goal behind this trailblazing combination is simple: To continue to be the #1 information resource for the industry with a broader global perspective. No matter where you are located, as an integrator you likely face the same sets of business challenges. We recognise that fact. Best business practices, technology adoption, operational excellence, inventory, quality control, vendor selection, profitability, sales techniques, service-call efficiency, labour management, etc., are all common concerns for integrators in the UK, Europe and the U.S. The combined resources of the Essential Install and EH Publishing teams have a primary mission to help dealers overcome those challenges and be the #1 information resource for the industry. But you are already familiar with Essential Install, but who the heck are we? CE Pro is the #1 U.S. publication in the residential custom installation field… no matter how you measure it. The publication recently celebrated its 20th year in publication. We have 40,000 audited readers, the bulk of whom are small businesses that focus on integrating audio/video, home automation, security, energy management and IT. CE Pro’s website, cepro.com, is also dominant. Monthly, the website averages nearly 500,000 page-views and nearly 90,000 unique visitors. It’s includes downloadable research metrics including brand preference studies, wage and salary information and more. That is more than five times the closest competitor. The editorial team is the most experienced and well-connected in the industry with nearly 70 years of combined experience in this market. Founding editor-at-large Julie Jacobson is our networking and home control/automation guru. Senior editor Bob Archer is our audiophile/videophile on staff, providing monthly product reviews from the integrator perspective. I have been covering the low-voltage market myself for nearly 25 years having spent 10 years as editor of Security Sales & Integration (another EH publication) before joining CE Pro in 2000. Commercial Integrator just marked its fourth year in business. As you can discern from the name of the publication, it focuses on helping integrators design, sell and install audio/video, building automation/control, digital signage, mass notification, teleconferencing and more. The magazine has an audited readership of 25,000 subscribers and the website (commercialintegrtor.com) averages nearly 90,000 page-views and more than 11,000 unique visitors monthly. Similar to CE Pro, the Commercial Integrator editorial team is filled with veterans, led by editor-in-chief Tom Leblanc. Our experience enhances the reach already provided by Daniel Sait and the Essential editorial team. For you, it means more breaking news, more insightful commentary and more in-depth analysis of trends to help your businesses thrive. Please do not hesitate to contact any of us directly with questions. Cheers! Jason Knott, editor-in-chief, CE Pro jknott@ehpub.com Twitter: @jasonwknott

Piled high with custom install information KALEIDESCAPE NAMES NEW CEO

Cheena steps into the role of CEO at a pivotal time for the industry

Kaleidescape has upped the tempo on innovation as studios change to digital distribution and electronic sell-through models by appointing a new chief executive officer. Cheena Srinivasan is a founder of Kaleidescape and previously served as the company’s chief operating officer and executive vice president. He steps into the role of CEO at a pivotal time for the industry, as movie purchasing shifts from physical disc ownership to digital models. As CEO, Cheena will focus his efforts on establishing Kaleidescape as a platform for electronic sell-through by offering the convenience of streaming, the quality of Blu-ray and an impressive catalogue of titles. Over the past 13 years Kaleidescape has built technologies, such as a database of cinematic information on over 245,000 movie titles, along with information on consumers’ tastes and preferences. “We have shipped over 135,000 products used in close to 16,000 installations, located in more than 120 countries,” said Cheena. “We want hundreds of thousands more customers around the world by accelerating the disc-to-digital transition via our store and new lower-cost devices.” Founder and former CEO Michael Malcolm said: “Cheena’s track record of driving business growth speaks for itself. We are confident his appointment as CEO will ensure the company’s continued success.” Cheena is a member of the Custom Electronic Design Installation Association (CEDIA), Consumer Electronic Association (CEA), Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) and the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem, LLC (DECE). He holds a master’s degree in management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a master’s degree in operations research, also from MIT.

TAVCOM LAUNCHES BITESIZE TRAINING Tavcom, the supplier of security systems training courses for installers, operators, managers and designers, is to help professionals fill knowledge gaps without spending hours on Internet research. The Bite Size Training programme includes 10 knowledge modules, each one focussed on a specific subject. Students answer self-assessment questions and by clicking on key words can view detailed information about certain aspects of the module’s subject matter. “Our online courses have proved incredibly popular,” said managing director Paul Tennent. “But we are offering something distinctly different with our Bite Size Training. The objective is to provide modules that address individual key issues. “Each module is delivered in an easy-to-complete format and can fill what may be an important gap in a person’s knowledge. Participants will find there is no heavy reading - all they need to know is readily available.” When completed, each module offers two Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. Subjects include essential information needed to gather video evidence, a technical guide to fibre optics, Intrusion Detection Devices, Electronic Article Surveillance and Video Analytics. Paul said: “Each module will be produced with the assistance of our independent tutors and consultants. Each will meet the same high standards of education that we have achieved worldwide with our accredited vocational training courses.” Paul said a development programme was in place that would see the list of 10 being continually expanded during 2014 and beyond. Details of the modules can be at www.tavcom.com/cpd-courses/bitesize-training/

It combines the intuitive room control solutions of Crestron with unified collaboration features associated with Microsoft Lync. The system incorporates the Crestron UC Codec for Lync, plus HD camera, microphone, speaker bar, one or two 65in touch displays and a high resolution 10in tabletop touch-screen, said Video Corporation’s head of northern EMEA James Vickerage. “Customers are demanding more user control and collaboration from video conferencing. Crestron RL enables users to share content instantly. It is unique in integrating all systems including lights, shades and AV on to one platform. This is great news for the customer, dealers and integrators.” The agreement will incorporate distribution of Crestron’s AirMedia presentation tool allowing users to wirelessly connect their own device in a meeting-and-share context. PRO-VISION THUMPS OUT BUMPER BROCHURE Pro-Vision has launched its latest 180-page product catalogue featuring CCTV and Access Control equipment. The 2014 edition includes the Mirasys and NVT IP range, the new 960H analogue range from Bosch, monitor brackets from B-Tech plus a comprehensive listing of Access Control equipment including Aiphone, BPT, Nortech, PAC and Siemens. Internal sales manager Simon Davies said: “More than 50 pages of branded IP products should satisfy increasing demand for equipment that uses the IP protocol for transmission. Due to the extensive range that we supply the catalogue can only provide the UK installer with a snapshot.” Simon continued: “The introduction of new and exciting brands gives the installer a greater variety of equipment. It’s impossible for us to list every product made by the manufacturers we represent, but if the brand is listed we can obtain any of the products in their range.” Pro-Vision is distributor for AMG, Bosch, Dallmeier, Dedicated Micros, Dennard, Exacq, Fujinon, JVC, LG, Mirasys, Panasonic, Pelco, Pentax, Redvision, Samsung, Silvernet, Veracity, Xtralis, BPT, Nortech, PAC, Siemens and other manufacturers.

D-TOOLS BANGS RECRUITING DRUM FOR MVP ARMY D-Tools has signed up its latest recruit to the growing Manufacturer Vantage Point (MVP) programme and renewed membership of another leading company. Epson has joined while Stealth Acoustics recently renewed participation in the D-Tools MVP programme. Integrators, installers, sales professionals and retailers using D-Tools for audio video system design, proposal and estimation now have immediate access to detailed information about equipment from both companies via the D-Tools product database. Through the MVP program, D-Tools System Integrator users worldwide can specify products, said D-Tools president and CEO Adam Stone, rating Epson’s home theatre projectors for their high performance, affordability and recognisability to the end-user. “By adding Epson as an MVP partner, we’re providing D-Tools System Integrator users the tools they need to efficiently specify Epson projectors, meeting end-user demand and drastically cutting down on time chasing down things like specifications and model numbers,” said Adam. On Stealth Acoustics Adam said: “Their unique and totally invisible audio solutions enable D-Tools six users to recommend great sounding and aesthetically pleasing audio options to their clients for a variety of creative applications.” Stealth Acoustics’ Vice President Steve Olszewski said: “Over the years the D-Tools MVP Program has enabled us to facilitate better communication with our dealers and introduce additional custom integrators to our awardwinning line of Stealth Acoustics speakers and amplifiers.” More than 4,500 MVP members help the design and integration community streamline the design process by making it easier for them to provide professional proposals to clients via the D-Tools System Integrator platform. Users receive product data free. In turn, the MVP program gives manufacturer partners a direct connection with the D-Tools user database, building customer loyalty by ensuring that existing dealers have the important information they need to recommend, specify and install their products. Essential Habitech

Let there be MODE! Habitech’s new lighting brand is a celebrated name with a clutch of custom features. Sales manager Timmi Thorsen sets the scene. Our search for a great lighting brand is over. For years we’ve been looking for a technically advanced, versatile and innovative range to complete the Habitech line-up. At last we’ve found a brand that ticks all the boxes and it’s a big one. Anyone involved with lighting design in the commercial and residential space for the last 40 years will be familiar with MODE lighting. What Hoover is to suction, MODE is to the creative application of light in the home and in much larger environments as well. For instance, MODE’s Evolution System for the gigantic O2 Arena provides control over the main arena lighting for sporting and music events, 96 private hospitality suites, bars, restaurants, retail concessions and circulation spaces. The beauty of MODE and its relevance to our integrators resides in the scalability of its technology and the innovation of its latest product introductions.

All the Control You’d Expect From Habitech’s point of view, the timing couldn’t be better. With improved design and at extremely competitive prices points, MODE can give you the power to paint with light inside and outside the home with the quality features you’d expect from a high performance system: flexibility to design lighting schemes large and small; the integration of home theatre, security and door entry systems; control via wall panel, handheld remote, phone or tablet; single room or global commands; a browser interface to light up the house from the other side of town or the far side of the planet.

New Features your Clients will Love So far so illuminating, and the perfect skill set to complement our other lines. But MODE has greater potential to inspire your creativity and your clients in equal measure. If you’re looking for something different to offer, the brand’s Coolbrium range takes customisation to a new level. Coolbrium is a new range of capacitive touch control plates, available in stylish black or white glass. The Coolbrium plate provides eight configurable ‘buttons’ allowing scene recall, impulse and toggle and two multi-function buttons providing On/Raise and Off/Lower with integral IR receiver. The glass surface above each button can be laser-engraved with text or icons from a huge range of

templates in as little as two days. Each button has an integrated RGB LED, which backlights the engraving with seven user selectable colours and intensities for a stunning visual effect, giving the panel a truly unique character, as personal to your client as their choice of room colour.

Easy Design and Installation Coolbrium is the latest interface for MODE’s eDIN system. Incorporating a simple building-block approach to lighting control, eDIN is a compact, affordable, modular system, which includes modules capable of dimming or switching low voltage lighting, energy efficient CFL lamps, fluorescent lighting, DSI products, LED systems and Cold Cathode Convertors, as well as controlling blinds and curtain motors. eDIN supports Ethernet connectivity out-of-the-box together with full, high speed, bi-directional RS232 control for integration with any third party system. The company creates a powerhouse partnership between the Essential brand of @stortfordaudio of @limitless_ magazines and shows ctrl attending EcoBuild and EH Publishing, who are behind significant US titles such as CE Pro and Commercial Integrator. With each side boasting an appeal to consumers in the other’s market, the deal will see the two entities draw from each other’s position and resources in order to generate mutual growth. Whilst the A very neat finish from Essential family will gain LiveInstall member @ ThinkSona ‘capital, leadership, and new content assets’, EH will have the chance to meet the demands of its European audience by expanding its brands on the other side of the Atlantic. Their decision to work together in this case will greatly benefit not just both parties involved, but also the residential and commercial install markets on the whole, which will gain increasing contribution to their own promotion and growth. The values that can be taken from the example set by All Things Media are equally fundamental to the success of LiveInstall. Twitter is in itself a collaborative tool, linking multiple people to work together towards some form of goal or benefit; LiveInstall sprouted from this possibility and has bloomed into an established network used by the smart home install industry for communication and sharing. It has introduced a new mentality, which focuses less on constant competition and more on improving quality and increasing ability through making use of contacts. Those involved with it have seen the benefits of identifying areas to strengthen in their business or personal knowledge and bringing in specialists in the relevant area to learn from or work alongside and ultimately help their projects to thrive.

Satellite of love A common example of collaboration in the industry would be smart home installers bringing in the expertise of electrical or satellite and aerial companies to provide the perfect solution for their clients. Recent developments amongst the LiveInstall community, however, have seen the notion taken even further. Noah Derrington of Installation Man and Glenn Impett of GDRTECH met through #LiveInstall and began to see many similarities between their approaches to smart homes and where they wanted their businesses to be. They realised the potential benefits that could arise from moving from working as individuals to being part of a strong team that allowed them to focus on playing to their own strengths. From this, a merger was not far away and new company Smart Nest was born with a fresh brand identity and vision. Noah feels that the community played a significant part in the new direction they are taking. “It has been a revelation that everyone in the industry involved in #LiveInstall are genuinely great people.” Says Noah. “We are all at different stages of our careers, but we all share a sense of personal achievement when we do great quality work for our clients or help out another installer in difficulty.” Other #LiveInstall’ers have chosen to combine the efforts of multiple companies for individual projects. Jon Knight of Visual Sounds seized the opportunity to bring in commercial infrastructure experts Avicci for collaboration on a residential whole house rewiring. Having discussed the potential impact of commercial standards on the smart home, actually working together helped Visual Sounds to get a real idea of just how much this form of cabling could improve the quality of residential projects. The residential market is a desired target for Avicci and the collaboration offered them the chance to take steps in the right direction. The possibility for this sort of crossover to grow beyond the boundaries of one building is worth discussing further and what better platform than LiveInstall to provide for this? Visual Sounds also made waves in the #LiveInstallBattle this month, with an excellent home cinema installation that pipped Geoff Beale - @ CrestronWizard in a tight final. Congratulations to Jon and many thanks to everyone who got involved. We will continue to run the friendly spirited #liveinstallbattle on a bi-monthly basis. Essential Wyrestorm

Wyrestorm puts the custom into custom install

The modular card system allows installers to build genuinely bespoke systems

March 24 2014 saw the launch of WyreStorm’s Modular Pro Plus HDBaseT POH Matrix range which the company says is set to redefine the approach to HD project specification with infinitely scalable solutions to suit any project. WyreStorm says the MX-0808-PP-POH-CUSTOM range offers myriad analogue and digital-over-HDBaseT switching solutions thanks to a flexible modular matrix chassis individually configurable with a selection of multi-format transmission cards for virtually limitless applications. Featuring distribution of HD video, audio, integrated Power-over-HDBaseT for remote powering of display receivers and bi-directional control via IR and routed RS232 over Cat5e/6 up to 70m, each output can be cascaded multiple times to create distributions of any size, tailored to the needs of the project for a truly custom install for any residential or commercial project - from a single room to a shopping centre or anything in between. Selection of matrix chassis and multi-format transmission card combinations is made easy using WyreStorm’s online Virtual Rack System Planner. This intuitive design tool guides installers through five simple steps to a customised distribution by choosing a matrix, dragging and dropping card selections into the virtual rack environment, then completing details, reviewing the system selections and submitting the enquiry online. A member of the WyreStorm team will personally contact the installer to check the details and selection before confirming the order, custom-building the system to the specified configuration and shipping to the installer within 10 business days from initial spec to final delivery. Including a host of reference materials such as images

and design concepts, the Virtual Rack System Planner also features a selection of editable templates from 8x16 to 8x56 to automatically populate the rack with preset configurations, yet remain editable for users to swap cards until the ideal configuration is found. Furthermore, system selections can be saved and loaded via a secure login, as well as printed and shared via social media or email to ensure projects are communicated as quickly and easily as they can be created.

Endless Possibilities As the name suggests, the infinitely customisable MX0808-PP-POH-CUSTOM enables transmission cards to be configured in any sequence, with each combination offering its own unique benefits to best meet the requirements of the installation. Individual outputs of matrices, as well as the matrices themselves can be cascaded multiple times for larger distributions, with diverse switching configurations limited only by the installer’s imagination and the project itself – 3x8, 4x8, 8x12, 6x14, 12x16, 10x32 and so on. WyreStorm’s custom solutions also offers chances to integrate products that were previously problematic. Until now, centralised installation of games consoles has been difficult due the controllers needing to be locally connected to the consoles themselves. However, the additional streaming and media hub functions of PS3 and Xbox360, not to mention next generation consoles such as PS4 and Xbox

Installers can use simple drag and drop on-line ordering and receive the products in just ten working days

ONE, have created a far greater need to have content available in other areas of the property (to view family photos in the lounge or access Netflix in a bedroom, for example). The WyreStorm MX-0808-PP-POHCUSTOM range opens up a whole new world of integration possibilities

In such an installation environment, the selection of an TX-POH-100 HDBaseT in only card and an external HDBaseT transmitter, such as the WyreStorm TX-70, can be used to send AV content from the console, over Cat6 up to 70m and connect directly into the centralised matrix, essentially just as it would if the games console were connected locally in the rack. Furthermore, as the TV at the games console location is also connected to the matrix via the same Cat6 infrastructure, it can also receive a signal from the console back from the matrix along with any other connected source. Summer 2014 will see the release of a WyreStorm 3:1 auto-switching transmitter, another transmission device in the WyreStorm HDBaseT family, that enables three sources to be connected (HDMI, Display Port & VGA), with any of them capable of being transmitted via HDBaseT up to 70m to the matrix and added to the distribution. As such, when combined with this matrix/card configuration, what was previously an 8x7 matrix is now effectively an 8+2x7 system thanks to the connection and transmission of remote sources over the uncompressed HDBaseT platform. The TX-POH-110 (HDMI in/out/pass-through) card is designed for local zone connection rather than distance transmission. For example, a media server device can be connected to the matrix as usual, but instead of being sent over distance, it is connected to a local AVR, which is in turn connected by HDMI to an external TX-70 transmitter, directly linked to a projection output such as a Panasonic Digital Link projector, which accepts a WyreStorm HDBaseT signal directly out of the box without any additional setup or firmware download. Key to the scalability of the system is the ease with which it can be expanded, for example, the above configuration can be upgraded in several ways depending on the needs of the project, such as expanding the main sources to additional zones in the house. For example, installations containing

multiple HDMI sources, such as two satellite boxes, Blu-ray and Apple TV can be connected through the matrix via TX-POH-020 HDMI Passthrough cards, which enables content to be looped out and connected to another cascaded matrix in the WyreStorm Pro Plus range, such as the new MX-0404-PP-KIT. This new version of the popular 4x4 Pro Plus matrix adds QuickSync technology, which takes away the negotiation time between source switching. The four outputs of this matrix can be sent to an additional four rooms. Another expansion model example might be integration of the WyreStorm AMP-001-010 HDBaseT Digital Audio Amplifier/Receiver. Adding the AMP to zones 1-6 (and even 8-11) will provides an instant step-up in audio quality via the internal 2x25W D-class amplifier. Modern flat panel screens provide clear HD images, but audio reproduction typically suffers as a result of the thin designs. The use of a pair of passive speakers (wall, ceiling, floor) means that whatever source is selected on the matrix, the audio will be extracted from the HDBaseT feed and reproduced in equally crystal-clear clarity. A further option could involve the addition of the Enado hardware/software control solution, offering capable cross-platform, browser-based software to create an endto-end AV distribution and control system that is always on, updated and accessible, bringing together all of the above components and make them controllable under one control platform. WyreStorm says Enado offers exceptional performance within one compact unit, designed to offer the high levels of functionality utilised by a customised Pro Plus POH configuration. The control system can be programmed via a simple, but advanced web-browser application and is designed to offer maximum control flexibility eliminating the requirement for proprietary applications. Able to run on any client device offering a web interface, including computers, Smart TVs, games consoles, Enado is suited to both commercial and residential control. With high-quality flexibility and customisation at a keen price point, a WyreStorm modular Pro Plus PoH solution offers true custom installation for a total AV distribution and control solution for any application. systems. Cleerline’s range includes the Non-Strip Fibre (NSF) fibre optic cable and Planet Waves cables and connectors. Cleerline’s NSF fibre optic cable has been created to simplify and improve the process of fibre optic termination. Habitech says it is the first fibre optic cable with an integral coating that eliminates the need for an acrylate buffer layer and is also the first to protect the glass at all times, boosting speed of termination, bend tolerance and safety, while reducing tooling costs. Habitech says Cleerline NSF’s proprietary polymer coating allows installers to terminate mechanical splice style connections quickly and because the glass isn’t exposed, avoids the possibility of imperfections or scarring of the glass caused by stripping. In addition, Cleerline NSF replaces the standard ‘buffer coating’ with a ‘soft peel’ jacket, which can be removed with fingernails, saving time and the cost of a special tool. Using a simple ‘Cut; Cleave; and Connect’ regime, the process can be completed in as little as 60 seconds. NSF fibre is compatible with all common connector systems for standard 50/125 multimode and 9/125 single mode fibres. Cleerline’s Planet Waves coax cable making system requires no stripping, crimping or soldering, but with a single tool and a cut/twist/screw process enables the assembly of custom-length interconnects, saving installation time by up to 75%, says the distributor. Once the cable is cut, there’s no need to strip the jacket or flare out the shield strands. The connector twists on and is secured with a screw, which pierces the cable’s outer jacket and connects to the shield. BNC, F-pin, RCA, and 90° angled connectors are available in three quality standards: BC, ST and HD. For convenience, the system includes ‘Y’ and Pheonix cut/ twist/screw connectors and offers a single full bandwidth cable design, suitable for all AV applications. Planet Waves cable is also available in three and five wire bundles, together with an oxygen-free copper ‘HD Wire’ upgrade in black, red, blue, white, green, yellow and orange for identification. Plenum rated versions are also offered. The range includes two cutters: a mini cutter in a compact, folded design and a CCT-CI Cable Cutter and Tester, complete with an integrated testing tool to check for ground and tip continuity on RCA, quarter inch, BNC, and F cables.

Sixteen Planet Waves HDMI cables provide Ethernet capability and ‘Long Length’ signal transfer at high speed 1080P/3D over HDMI. New Port Savers and HDMI Right Angles supporting High Speed W/Ethernet are added to provide a complete HDMI solution. Habitech also supplies the SCP brand and recent introductions include Ultra-Slim High Speed HDMI Cables with Ethernet, designed for connections in tight spaces with restricted access to the HDMI ports. The maker says its connector head is up to 50% smaller than competitor’s standard connector and the cable itself is more flexible and the diameter is also especially thin at only 3.6mm OD. Invision UK is bullish on the capabilities of its cable offering with the ICE brand delivering high-quality at a competitive price over category cable, structured cable, automation cable, speaker cable, HDMI cable as well as a range of plugs and connectors. “No installer worth his salt should underestimate the need for high quality cabling,” argues Mark Taylor, business manager at Invision UK. “Cutting corners is widespread in the wire industry. ICE Cable’s state of the art manufacturing facilities adhere tightly to all standards and specifications. When you purchase ICE Cable you know you are getting exactly what you ordered. With the needs for higher bandwidth growing all the time, you need to know your cable is up to the standards it says it is. “ICE Cable is a brand that gives installers high quality cable at a low cost. Specifically designed for custom installation, ICE cables offer many advantages, chief among them being the use of oxygen free copper with high copper content, which meets or exceeds specifications. Sturdy box design, easy cable stripping, snag free pulling and a clear labeling system all contribute to a valuable saving in time and money for busy installers.” With a new range of HDMIs, Invision says ICE Cable have changed the way we think about HDMI cables featuring GRIP Lock technology, Ultra compact head, 4K, 3D and Ethernet pass through. Available in lengths ranging from 0.5m to 30m (1080p/60hz), ICE Cable have again produced this high specification cable at a keen price point. Lindy wants to draw attention to its range of In-Wall AV cables systems. This modular system allows installers to easily run cables in walls and through conduit using the relevant fly lead cables at either end. Examples from the range include the 9.5m In-Wall Analogue AV Cable Run which allows installers to deliver long distance VGA cable runs in walls and through

conduit. Connect a set of VGA modular Fly Leads to the DIN style plugs at each end of the product and achieve an installation that Lindy says is high in quality and durable as well as easy to maintain and install. A digital version is available with the 9.5m In-Wall Digital AV Cable Run allowing installation of long distance HDMI or DVI cable in the same way, this time by connecting a set of HDMI or DVI modular Fly Leads to the DIN style plugs at each end. Various other formats and lengths are offered. Lindy also delivers to market its Long Distance Active HDMI cables allowing installers to extended HDMI signals up to 30m and it’s Premium Gold HDMI Cables for connecting longer lengths up to 45m. The Multi-Room Company offers the Leviton wiring and connection systems allowing installers to manage and distribute voice, data and video signals. The distributor says the Leviton advantage has always been ease and speed of installation, with modular patch panels and accessories that are perfectly suited to the connectivity requirements of today’s installations. Leviton’s Quickport Patch Panels and Patch Blocks can create a Category 5, 5e or 6+ panel instantly by matching Leviton Performance connectors with versatile QuickPort patch panels and patch blocks. The panels include a wire management bar and an 89D mounting bracket is available for the patch blocks. Panels and blocks are manufactured from 16 gauge steel with a black painted finish and include white write-on areas silk screened beside the connectors. Printed circuit boards and plastic components are all made from fire-retardant materials rated UL 94V-O. Patch blocks are easily configured with data grade QuickPort modules, or with QuickPort AV modules such as RCA sockets, speaker jacks or F-connectors. The patch panels range in port density from 24 to 48. This modular connectivity at the hub of a wiring infrastructure can then be extended throughout the project by a range of connectivity solutions for many disciplines with a comprehensive range of Leviton wall plates and QuickPort connectors. Leviton also offers low profile/high density interconnect panels

for data and telephone that incorporate the stability and reliability of commercial punch-down connections with the usability, density, performance and aesthetics required in residential installations. The Twist and Mount Patch Panels allow installers to punch-down CAT 5e or CAT 6 cabling on component-rated commercial style patch panels that fit into a Leviton Structured Media Centre. Anthem AV Solutions has just been appointed as exclusive UK distributors for Ethereal’s ultra-thin EHD High Speed Digital Cable products. Anthem says these HighSpeed, Long-Run HD Inter-Linc cables have been designed specifically for installers and are capable of delivering over huge lengths with no signal degradation, while being very thin and lightweight. The products are exclusive to the CI industry and come in diameters starting at 3mm for the one, two, three, four and five metre cables. EHD is said to be the thinnest and most flexible high-speed digital cable available that exceeds HDMI test ratings. Ethereal’s longer six, eight, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 25 metre lengths range in diameter from 5 to 9mm – depending on length – without any quality loss. These small diameters make them light which makes them well suited for complex racking systems. Elsewhere, snap-in colour coding helps distinguish between cables when running multiple lines and each cable comes with six paired colours. Anthem says Ethereal’s EHD High Speed Digital Cable products are able to carry 4K and 3D information over gigantic lengths providing consistent, quality HD without artifacting or signal loss. The distributor says the products have specially-built data accelerators that keep both EDID and HDCP operating at remarkable performance levels. EHD cables are powered from within the interface, eliminating any external power devices that are typically required and thus no additional power supplies to fail, meaning less support visits. The

Essential Cables and Connections manufacturer explains that its EHD cable program is a new and different approach to High Speed Digital Interconnects. With the EHD cables, installers get assured 10.2G performance at any length without the need for any additional electronics. Moreover, every product in the range undergoes individual QC testing during the programming process to ensure high-quality. Anthem will offer hands on product training with its area managers, so contact direct for more information. Another company offering fibre solutions is cable company Webro. The company’s FIRS (Fibre Integrated Reception System) provides the higher bandwidth and longer distances and future proofing associated with fibre avoiding the need for re-amplification every 125 – 250 metres (depending on the type of cable used). The company says its system will deliver kilometres of reliable service if required. The Webro KeyFibre Mechanical concept is based on reusable and universal formats, Universal Connectors and Webro KeyCleave CLU10 High-Precision Universal Fibre Cleavers, without the need of special tools. Because of the transparent body of the design, installers can easily identify if the connection made is to the correct standard. If no light is visible, the connection is excellent, under 0.1dB. The maker says its Webro KeyQuick solutions provide a cost-effective fibre deployment solution with the latest mechanical splice technology, rapid connectorisation, a record on insertion loss (under 0.1dB) with very low initial investment, low manual skill sets and high reliability. Webro’s KeyQuick Mechanical Splice technology is also epoxy-free and with its transparent body enabling immediate splice verification via the Visual Fault Locator of 900um cable and 250um bare fibre with typical installation time of less than 30 seconds. Available inclusive of 1m Pigtails in LC, ST, and FC formats, the products allow faster termination with only one connection required per fibre. Made of engineering-grade plastics and containing index matching gel, Webro says the products offer a guaranteed life of over 25 years and are the perfect solution for TV/SAT/ FTTH, suitable for indoor and outdoor use. QED Professional from Armour Home is a range of high quality cables and accessories designed to give the same performance and value as the company’s domestic award winning QED cables. markings for ease of use and are supplied in heavy duty ‘PrOboxes’ or reels. The usage table on the packaging helps installers keep track of how much cable remains after each job. The box colour also differentiates between lSZH and PVC outer -sheaths, being black or blue respectively. The maker recommends the use of the award winning QED AIrlOC or Screwloc termination systems with its cables. Banana and Spade Termination Screwloc 4mm plugs and Spade terminations provide secure cable connection and are 24c gold plated for optimum signal transfer. The terminations have colour coded AbS barrels to ensure correct phasing and prevent amplifier damage. QED developed AIrlOC, is a solder-free, airtight connection between the two metals of cable and plug allowing the cable and plug to offer the optimum signal transfer and therefore, better sound quality. The system also reduces contact resistance and ensures high-quality longterm performance. The AIrlOC crimp tool comes in hand held and desk top versions and is used to crimp the brass barrel around the wires to create the air tight seal. HDanywhere offers its Platina HDMI Cable designed specifically for installers offering a discreet, unobtrusive, sleek, platinum-white cable. Dillan Pattni, head of design for the company, says: “We know that integrators take great time and effort in wiring racks to look as visually pleasing as possible. This knowledge influenced Platina’s ultra-discreet and minimalist design, steering clear of aesthetic-overkill and imbuing the British-designed cable with a cool, contemporary, classic edge instead. And its not just style over substance either - the new Platina cable is as cutting-edge as it gets in terms of performance, but now there’s an HDMI cable that combines that with added install convenience and the kind of looks no client could object to.” The cables offers discrete install, high speed with Ethernet, is 4K-ready and available in 0.5-, 1-, 1.5-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-metre lengths.

The box of delights The CI industry is full of clever boxes/systems which make life easier for installers by taming signals and control info and putting them where installers want and in the correct format. With the demands of the home network increasing all the time, solutions to offer support to ensure networks are up to scratch are increasing. As many games consoles, smart TV’s and PVR’s now require the consistency and reliability of a wired connection – many don’t even have a Wi-Fi connection at all, having been removed by manufacturers due to the level of tech assistance calls they create. Asheridge Communications is offering a solution to these headaches with its MoCA line which uses the existing coax cable network in a home to deliver reliable and high speed

Essential Cables and Connections networks. There isn’t any need to replace splitters or loft amplifiers, because the MoCA signal can pass through these without having to reroute input and output cables etc. Asheridge says the MoCA adapters connected to each viewing point give high speed Ethernet, Wi-Fi access and mesh networking between all a user’s connected devices and media sources, with all of the performance and reliability of installing a fully wired data network. Asheridge says the systems delivers the speed and reliability that products need, without having to spend a lot of time and money retrofitting a Cat5 network. Unicam is an evangelist for the capable range of Global Caché’s iTach range of connection boxes which offer conversion of AV devices into network capable kit. The Global Caché’s iTach Flex is a smart end-point that Wi-Fi or network enables electrical devices instantly. The Flex adds intelligence to the enabled device, allowing events and tasks to be triggered with simple web-based commands and includes on-board memory allowing for stored web pages and files and web page control. Global Caché’s iTach Flex products integrate with iPhone/iPad/ iPod and Android Apps and iTach’s Ethernet w/PoE connectivity, offers support of eight simultaneous connections in a small form factor. Unicam says the product’s market credibility is underlined by the number of iPhone/iPod/iPad and Android developers which have chosen to integrate with the hardware. Used with the iTach Flex, the Flex Link Sensor and Relay Cable is designed to allow for control of a variety of devices through the use of internal relays. For higher power devices, the board also supports external latching relays to allow for communication with devices that exceed the board’s voltage and current limitations.

In addition to relays, the cable contains input blocks to detect contact closure as well as AC and DC voltage between ±3v and ±24v rms value. The relay cable mounts directly onto din rails allowing for simple implementation with external relay banks. In addition to the iTach, iTach Flex and GC-10 Network Adapter product families, Global Caché provides an IR learner, an IR blaster, sensors, receivers and conversion cables. From HDanywhere comes a new HDMI Audio De-Embedder, Down-mixer and Video Scaler. Designed for when a single HDMI source signal is being shared to multiple HDMI sink devices (HDTV displays, monitors, AVRs or projectors), the HDMI Signal Manager ensures that each sink gets the type of HDMI signal that’s best suited to its capabilities, by either up or downscaling video and audio to match. HDanywhere says the product is a veritable Swiss Army Knife for the installer of HDMI devices. Offering a one box solution, the supplier says the ‘HDCSM’ does everything installers need to make HDMI behave correctly at a display location. The product contains a signal processor that can up or downscale HDMI resolutions + de-embed, downmix and re-embed the HDMI audio stream. When HDMI Audio Downmixing, the de-embedded audio is output as both 5.1 via an optical port and down-mixed 2.0ch stereo via a 3.5mm headphone jack port. The HDMI Video Resolution Scaling capability has three video options; Fixed 1080p/60, Fixed 720p/60 or AUTO which

Essential Day in the Life: Redwing

Redwing Takes Flight After several successful years, Redwing is looking to take things to the next level via increased marketing and social media awareness by combining a full CI service with electrical infrastructure installation. Based in a smart looking enterprise park close to Bishop Stortford, Herts, Redwing Systems is spearheaded by Jason Phillipson and Joe Obeney who have built a successful business servicing the needs of new build and major renovation clients in the Home Counties. Jason explains: “I was in IT for quite a few years implementing infrastructure networks and programming. I also worked in Investment Banking where I was involved in IT, but developed an interest in AV as that industry began to move towards video conferencing systems. Developing knowledge of how to control AV systems and make them work in conjunction with IT networks, I could see the potential in offering what I had learnt at the corporate level to domestic clients and set up Redwing in June of 2007.” Jason’s experience has provided many important lessons, but perhaps the most important was to manage expectations and deliver reliability. Jason says: “One of the most important mottos has always been to keep things simple and make it work. Overcomplex systems often risk reliability issues and tend not to build good client relationships as over-specifying leads to projects where the client does not use all of the functionality and feels they do not have value for money. “Right from the start we wanted to only provide customers with the functionality they really wanted and create rock solid systems which would build our reputation. This has really paid off as we have customers who are on their third project working with us and a huge amount of our work comes from recommendation.” In the early days, Redwing was already involved in projects of considerable scale offering lots of multi-room audio and automation systems, often using Systemline

S6, however the future of the company began to change when Jason met Joe in 2009. Operating his own electrical contracting company, Joe began working with Jason on projects delivering the cable infrastructure and working closely to make sure the company’s watch word of reliability was delivered. Joe explains: “Working together, we realised that offering the whole package of electrical installation, then into lighting control as well as entertainment and automation systems and even heating and ventilation on top, could really take thing up a level making us more attractive to developers, interior designers and end-users.” Jason explains: “Once we had formally incorporated both our skills and customer contacts into one company, we could really start to motor. Being able to offer the cabling infrastructure on a project puts us in at the planning stage and we can build-in whatever systems are appropriate for each project.” Joe adds: “What is also great is that we are the masters of our own destiny in terms of quality. An installer can supply an electrician with detailed plans for a project, but you can’t stand over them while the work is carried out. We know our systems are going to be reliable because we are responsible for every phase and if there is a problem, we can fix it.”

System favourites Automation is a big part of the business and Jason explains: “After several months of research and a trip to the ISE, we have recently decided to take on Control4 as our automation system of choice. We feel the system offers the reliability we want, an interface that most clients immediately understand and it hits the right price point for our customer base.” Joe adds: “We particularly like the amount of products

Easy to use, whole house automation systems are a speciality for Redwing

the system is compatible with including security cameras and alarms. We find security is an increasing part of the business, with people relying more these days on cameras to give them the access and peace of mind they require.” The networked future is also something Redwing is prepared for. Jason says: “Wired networks and Wi-Fi for control is a big part of what we provide. We usually use Cisco or Ubiquiti products to get the performance we want and most customers are really impressed that we can offer the performance that their smart products crave. The mainstream AV industry has a problem in that it is selling smart TVs and other bandwidth hungry products without warning customers that these products simply will not work without a professional level network, this of course is where we come in and can be the heroes.” Offering wiring infrastructure, lighting was always going to be a big part of the company’s portfolio. Jason explains: “Lutron is our go-to option here. Grafik Eye and HomeWorks are great systems and often the easiest sell in a project. Everyone needs lights right? So all you are really doing is adding something extra to a utility the client has to have anyway. We have looked at some of the automation platform lighting options like the Control4 one, but as long as the budget allows, we use Lutron for the quality and the attractiveness of the wall plates.” Redwing is also getting into the window treatment area with products from Lutron, Somfy and Oceanair (available from RGB). As well as offering control of ambient light, the company also underlines the security and privacy advantages of these types of products. Whilst some product areas simply offer a functionality that may or may not be attractive to the client, some products of course become vital due the ebb and flow of technology. Jason says: “HDMI was the bane of our lives for a while. The problems it created really went against my grain as we wanted to provide reliability and this new technology often offered anything but. So we are big fans of the HDBaseT products from Wyrestorm and CYP and in fact we insist that clients take one of these options when creating HD networks as in the end the buck stops with us and we know these deliver.”

Spreading our wings Providing a great service of course will take companies a long way, but Redwing has recently undertaken a re-brand and

marketing campaign to push its name more into the limelight involving social media platforms and printed media. An active Facebook page and presence on twitter has increased reach and is something the company is confident will stand it in good stead for the future, in fact this interview came about directly from contact on twitter, with much kudos going to Nicole Vincent the company’s social media expert. The company has also recently joined CEDIA and is booked to be on the CEDIA stand at the Home Building and Renovating Show (NEC, March leg). A great chance to spread the word on install in general and of course good exposure for Redwing itself. All the company’s hard work is definitely paying off as Jason explains they have no less than six tenders to look at over the next week or so and projects up and running include a 10 bedroom home taking a full system including Sonos, Control4 and a home cinema. Joe says: “We are finding the concepts we offer as an industry do have a higher level of awareness now and this presents a big opportunity. Yes people can get more ‘off the shelf’ products these days, but it is our job to offer the client something special that they cannot get anywhere else and also provide them the infrastructure that the increasing amount of smart devices in the home call for.” Jason concludes: “We are really confident about the future. Money is definitely coming back into the housing market in the areas we look after and people in general just seem to be more confident in their outlook. So with the package that we can offer, the next few years are looking very good.” More Information: Redwing Technology +44 (0)1992 800902 www.redwingtechnology.co.uk, @Redwing_tech

Contents Study: Pulse Marketing Essential Case

Strike dread into the heart of your competitors by partnering with Pulse Marketing

Mega-Cine One Barry Sheldrick, UK sales manager for Pulse Marketing, explains how the company and the install team from Finite Solutions went about creating yet another futuristic cinema. This project originally started off with a demonstration over at the Pulse Log Cabin cinema, a reference level purpose built cinema created a few years back. The project actually featured as the very first case study in Essential Install and there is a video on the company’s website if you want to see more. As for this project, the client had an idea of what his budget was, but until this point, hadn’t really experienced a reference home cinema system. After hearing the awesome Procella Audio system installed in the Log Cabin, it was clear pretty early on that a high bar had been set. The client was blown away by the audio and video performance of the system and was totally hooked on the amazing D-BOX cinema chair experience. From here, Finite and Pulse worked together on a few system options that would work in the room dimensions, all based upon our usual, industry standard measurements and experience. Building Blocks of a Great Cinema: 1. 45° viewing angle in the primary seating position 2. At least 26 foot Lamberts screen brightness (5 foot Lamberts in 3D). 3. Sufficient bass energy for the cubic meterage of the room. 4. Enough output from the LCR’s to achieve 103dB in the primary seating position. 5. Support for 1.78, 2.35 and 2.40 aspect ratios.

34 Essential Install

The quotations were backed up with CAD drawings to make sure that the throw ratios, speaker placement and viewing angles all worked before Finite presented the quote to the client. By producing a few options, the client could fine tune what equipment would be used in his cinema, based on the performance and budget available. As long term Runco dealers, Finite have a lot of experience in the range, they know that there is more than one way to get the screen brightness required. By using ‘HB’ versions, we can trade light output for contrast ratio. This means that at a lower price point, we will have enough light output for a larger screen, but in order to achieve this, we have to sacrifice our contrast ratio and black level detail. In this installation, the client wanted the best possible picture quality available so Finite steered him towards the fabulous three- chip LS-12d. With 2100 ANSI Lumen, the LS-12d has enough punch to ensure fantastically bright 2D and 3D images with incredibly realistic colour reproduction. Partnered with the motorised Cineglide anamorphic lens, this projection system is as happy with 1.78 material as it is with 2.35/2.40 ratio content. The powerful DC-300 video processor can support up to eight HDMI inputs and the unique-to-Runco dual HDMI feed to the projector allows for separate left and right eye video processing.

Essential Case Study: Pulse Marketing Enjoying this home cinema is easy as pie with top end technology delivering effortless performance

The LS-12d fires its image onto the Reference ClearPix 2 fabric. This THX certified acoustically transparent screen material features industry leading audio performance whilst still being easy to calibrate to 6500K. The lateral masking E-Mask screen allows the client to change the shape of the screen between 2.40, 2.35 and 1.78 to perfectly frame the image. This boosts contrast, gives great edge definition and looks very cool. The power house of the audio system is partly hidden behind the screen with the Procella P8’s installed just above half way above the screen centre. This ensures the most accurate picture to voice tracking, adding yet another layer of immersion to the experience. Capable of 128dB at 1m, the P8’s huge output is perfectly matched to the room dimensions and ensure that the dialogue is crisp, clear and rich; just as the director intended. P8s were also used for the surround speakers (one pair per row, a final pair on the back wall) to create a fully enveloping rear sound stage too. A pair of P15 subwoofers handle the LFE duties with huge output and extension, but the sealed cabinets (no ports here please!) ensure that none of this power and depth is at the cost of control or finesse. The final piece of this immersive puzzle is D-BOX. All of the seats were ordered ‘D-BOX Ready’ as Finite always recommend that chairs are specified like this, it means that D-BOX can be bolted into the chair at a later date, should the client decide to upgrade. A pair of chairs in the front row have already been fitted with the awesome actuators and these really are the best seats in the house. With full motion feedback perfectly synchronised to the movie, these really are as close to the real thing as you can get. Get in contact with us and we can begin a new journey together towards genuinely high performance cinemas for your clients. Essential Case study

ONE HAPPY FAMILY Inch-perfect specification, good teamwork and drawing on the power of the Artcousitc brand were key aspects of this complex project headed up by Simply Cinemas Installations’ managing director Simon Swords.

Artcoustic loudspeakers offered the client stunning aesthetics and performance without compromising either

The children’s faces said it all, which made at least one other face light up. Simon Swords, the managing director at Simply Cinemas Installations, is delighted with one of his team’s most recent jobs. The home cinema for a young family combines hard-nosed engineering with softer elements of styling to ensure every face of the family is smiling. “I know it’s a cliché,” he says when asked his favourite aspect of the job, “but it’s the smile on the kids’ faces when mum and dad put on Toy Story 2 for the 152nd time. This project is not a ‘man-cave’ that as an industry we are often accused of inflicting upon otherwise happy families.” It is, he insists, a “well designed, elegant yet comfortable living space that happens to have a reference standard private cinema hidden away within”. During the day when the kids “are doing what they do best, being kids”, the technology is stowed to avoid damage or injury. But at night, when it’s time for bed, mum and dad can pop the cork and quietly unwind with a decent film. Every bit as important as a decent film is a decent screening and past experience had wiped the smile from Simon’s face and left a darker expression. Simply Cinemas Installations is an Essex-based custom installation company for bespoke private cinema rooms for the home. Simon has a passion for film. “But I was frustrated by the substandard experience in commercial multiplexes and saw a demand in the high-end consumer market. I started Simply Cinemas and have a team with over a century of experience. It was this team that focused on the large property of a client who already had an inkling of what he wanted having checked out the image library of Artcoustic on flickr.com.”

Fortunately his interior designer, Rebecca Wells of Little White Box, is a friend of Simon’s. She knew he could deliver, while Simon knew Tom Butler of Artcoustic UK would be keen to tackle such an ambitious project. It was important nothing would be permanently on show as the client’s inquisitive young children might damage equipment or, worse, injure themselves. Wall-mounted loudspeakers and a drop-down screen, therefore pricked the interest of the client. Storage was another issue. The property is vast, yet no area lent itself for a central rack location. “For this reason, low-level closed cabinetry was incorporated into the design to look discreet but offer enough space to store all of the AV equipment. We had to overlay positional information on loudspeakers, projector and screen. Technical drawings detailed each of the four cinema walls, cable schematics and schedules for infrastructure cabling.” This included speaker cabling for the cinema room and elsewhere plus Cat. 6 for the HDBaseT and data distribution. Planning was complex, says Simon of a project fast becoming a masterclass in subtlety and nuance as well as technical prowess. The refurbishment of the property took over a year to complete, throughout which the three maintained regular contact. The client specified Artcoustic loudspeakers because of their aesthetics but made no mention of specific models. He wanted a sound system that was as faithful to ‘true’ cinema spec as possible and visited the Artcoustic showroom near the Chelmsford base of Simply Cinemas Installations. “When we spoke about how cinemas achieved sound pressure levels as high as 105dB at peak, he wanted his to be able to do that, too. Luckily it was a detached house. The efficiency of the speakers proved to be of paramount importance. “Because of the distance the client would be sitting from the front three channels, we calculated the 8-4 variant of the Artcoustic range would be appropriate. This offers 101dB/

w/m efficiency, meaning that achieving 105dB would be effortless, in fact they only needed about 15W. This particular drive unit array is available in three sizes.” The client chose the 65-50 variant, while the Architect

by using the loft to hide the motors, nothing could be heard from the room below. Nothing overheats, it is all proving very reliable.” Not just reliable but fun. The last couple of times Simon has returned he was pleased to see hundreds of CDs

2-1 SL in-ceiling model was used for the surround and rear channels as no wall space was available at the correct positions. A JVC DLA-X35 projector was combined with a Screen Research drop-down screen. This went into the ceiling void and was specifically chosen because of the size of its carcass - far smaller than others available. Meanwhile a Yamaha AVR ‘ran the show’ from the low level cabinetry. This left the subwoofer to round off an unparallelled cinematic sensation for a project every bit as good as the sum of its parts. “We used the Artcoustic Linax Sub which looks identical to their cabinets, so what you look at as you enter the room is actually two subwoofers with a cabinet in the middle. You’d never have known but it sounded superb. “I think the reason the client loved the kit was that otherwise, as the stereotype has it, his wife would have outlawed such an elaborate system in what is their main lounge. Floor-standing speakers wouldn’t have worked aesthetically or practically; in-walls meant unsightly metal grilles. The speakers went behind the screen, not around it fundamental for home cinema performance.” Perfect harmony in the home cinema relies on a strong customer-client relationship, but no less crucial is the installersupplier relationship. Tom Butler and Paul Cummin at Artcoustic, according to Simon, “just get it”. They are dedicated to ensuring system designs are perfect, which goes way beyond the point at what their products are specified, adds Simon. “It’s very much a holistic approach; they help with the throw ratio of the projector, the decision on which control system is used, the lighting scheme, anything and everything that has a bearing on the client being pleased with the end result.” There were, however, technical challenges. Installing the AV equipment in low-level cabinets rather than using a ‘proper’ equipment rack tucked out of the way elsewhere meant ensuring sufficient mechanical ventilation in a small loft space above the cinema room. “I avoid mechanical ventilation when the equipment is located in-room as the noise can detract from the overall experience. But

scattered across the room’s floor. This was not, as Simon first suspected, the children wreaking havoc. The client eventually confessed he had been up the night before enjoying music ‘turned up to 11’ while the kids were away with mum. “It’s great he uses it for more than just film and squeezes out as much enjoyment as possible. I’ve since installed a Sonos Connect and introduced him to Spotify. Key elements to designing and executing a home cinema are many and varied. The first question we always ask is ‘how far away will you be sitting from the screen?’ “The answer determines how far apart the loudspeakers should be. From this, the rest falls into place. Throw ratio, surround speaker placement, everything is based on the answer to that question. This is, after all, about civilised enjoyment with high-quality audio and video. The client has already clocked up 1,000 hours on the projector’s lamp and it’s only been finished since January.”

Essential PictureFrame.tv

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL PictureFrame.TV takes build quality so seriously it now boasts a leading edge in the growing market for MirrorTV and ArtTV, says company owners Ketan V. Hirani and Shanif Habib. Essential Install (EI): Can you describe what inspired you to start the company and what was the initial aim/goal of PictureFrame.TV? PictureFrame.TV (PFTV): Having been in the industry for many years, it was apparent that margins were becoming harder and harder to maintain. The audio visual product had become a commodity with very little value. Dealers and installers were forced to compete with online multinationals and giants to a degree where they were only making singledigit margins. We wanted to create a unique product where dealers and installers could make a comfortable margin on a product that isn’t available online. That product requires an element of consultation and as it is always made to order, the customer needs to be walked through the process. Our initial aim was to introduce MirrorTV to a much broader audience and create a recognised brand. EI: You say you are now no.1 in your field, can you describe why you feel this claim is accurate? PFTV: We have been trading successfully since we started two-and-a-half years ago, seeing consistent growth month on month. In this time we have grown our dealer network to 30 high-end AV retailers. In addition to this we also regularly

supply to a large number of interior designers who regularly specify our products in their projects. Our biggest route to market is through independent AV installers. We have the largest active following on Twitter and Facebook and we’re the most mentioned MirrorTV company on Twitter today. We also support the #LiveInstall group, which has introduced us to many more installers. Furthermore, we currently have the largest portfolio of actual work – non-photoshopped - on both our website and Twitter feed. EI: Can you describe how you have made the concept of MirrorTV and ArtTV more accessible to the market in terms of the products themselves and your approach to dealing with customers and the end user? PFTV: First and foremost we pride ourselves on having a competitively priced product that remains of a high quality. We don’t claim to be the cheapest, but we we take our build quality very seriously and encourage both installers and end users to inspect the build quality both from the front and back of our systems, including 32in and 55in standard-range products. A strong reason to choose us for projects is that we aren’t simply a distributor for a foreign brand, we actually design

and manufacture our products here in the UK. Therefore we have more control on lead times and can be infinitely flexible on bespoke products. Customers are already familiar with the Samsung interface, so we’ve had a great reaction from installers and dealers as they already enjoy selling Samsung products. We had considered manufacturing our own LED panels, but it was apparent we would not be able to compete with the likes of Samsung in terms of quality, pricing and brand awareness. This has actually been an excellent decision for us. For the first time in the UK, customers are able to experience a demonstration of a MirrorTV at their local dealer, or visit our showroom at Heathrow. With MirrorTV being a foreign concept to most people, having somewhere they can physically view and experience the product is important in the sales process. Being the first company to use only real photographed work on our website, we’re able to communicate exactly what the customer can expect from their product. Our website is of a market-leading standard and we regularly receive compliments on it’s clarity and level of information, along with it’s gallery of work. With thousands of unique visitors each month, they can click on the ‘Where to buy’ section and be directed to their local dealer. EI: Can you explain what advantages the move to your new premises will offer the company, your customers and end users? PFTV: We recently moved to larger premises near Heathrow and this means we’re able to offer demonstration facilities especially to installers who don’t have their own showroom, yet still want to sell our products to their customers. We have found this to be very useful as we regularly receive visits from independent installers who bring their customers to view our products. As we design and build our products on-site, consulting with customers who wish to have bespoke products built for them is now easier.

PFTV: Our ArtTV product, which was released just over six months ago, has been received well. Installers can retrofit this product over any standard slim, modern TV. With a massive choice of artwork and frame options, the possibilities are endless. With our 2014 range, we will offer both our standard products, which are built around a high-end 6 series panel, and we will also offer the higher 7 series model, which will mean a greater spec with a slimmer profile. EI: What advantages will IP-enabled models offer to installers and their customers? PFTV: One major advantage of our IP-rated products is the larger range of applications, such as bathrooms, wet rooms, saunas, etc. This is something we’re regularly asked for and have now decided to develop. Also, this may increase possibilities within the commercial sectors. EI: Tell us about the showroom, what can installers see there and what advantages does it offer them and their clients? PFTV: Our showroom has a range of all our products. We have a number of ArtTVs on display as well as a variety of both floor-standing and wall-mounted MirrorTV solutions. This means installers can bring their clients to our showroom to demonstrate our products to them. EI: Finally tell us about any plans you have for the future to further develop the brand PFTV: We have a goal to both increase our market share as well as consumer awareness around MirrorTV and ArtTV options. We also are very active in product development and are continuously thinking of new products to add to our range. The Home Front EI provides and up-date on some of the latest functionality and product introductions from the home automation sector.

AMX says its Modero S Series is perfect for the residential control sector

42 Essential Install

AMX says its Modero S Series Touch Panel Family is the ideal choice for the residential marketplace, offering cost effective control in an attractive form factor. Features include dedicated control, 24 bit colour depth and streaming video functionality and a new multi-surface mount solution which allows it to be installed on practically any surface, including glass and granite. The Modero S Series is available in 10.1in, 7in and 4.3in models in both table-top and wall-mount configurations and the new Any Mount 10 Kit or Any Mount 7 Kit offers the ability to mount the panels into single and double gang wall boxes. Further AMX options come in the form of the Modero X Series G5 Touch Panels, which look to build on the already popular X Series. The look of the X series has remained the same, however the new G5 series delivers the ability to run Apps and browse the Web, while simultaneously utilising traditional home automation capabilities. In addition to implementing a new G5 graphics engine, AMX also quadrupled the processing power with a new Quad Core Processor – which it says is the fastest in the industry. Workload is eased thanks to the ability to deploy and update touch panel files from a network URL to simplify touch panel file management. The new Modero X also offers a Flush Wall Mount option for a sleeker look. AMX has also announced that its Entire Enova DGX Line is 4K ready. With the addition of two new Enova DGX Enclosures, AMX now offers an entire line of Enova DGX Digital Media Switchers (8x8 to 64x64) that are fully capable of supporting 4K and Ultra High Definition (UHD) content. AMX says ensuring that 4K content can be distributed is as simple as specifying or installing one of the several ‘just right’ Enova DGX-sized enclosures (8x8, 16x16, 32x32 and 64x64) so installers can future proof installs from small to very large. All Enova DGX enclosures utilise the same field replaceable, hot swappable input and output board sets, so upgrades and system expansions are straight-forward. As part of this commitment, AMX is introducing two new enclosure models – the Enova DGX 8 (AVS-ENOVADGX8ENC-A) and Enova DGX 16 (AVS-ENOVADGX16-ENC-A) which provide 4K system readiness for the smaller-sized Enova DGX enclosures. Once shipping, AMX says these 4K-capable enclosures will replace the current eight and 16-sized Enova DGX enclosures. While these new enclosures continue to use existing Enova DGX input and output boards, they are optimised and ready for 4K board solutions. The Enova DGX 32 enclosure is available now, with the Enova DGX 8, 16 and 64 Enclosures expected to begin shipping Q3 - 2014. Savant has been picking up fans in recent times under the wing of specialist distributor RGB. A fresh addition to the

control platform which is natively compatible with the Apple universe introduces a new more affordable version. David Webster, chief technology officer at RGB, explains: “The new Smart Series from Savant uses the award winning technology of its high-end Pro Series of luxury home automation products to bring innovative smart home control to a wider audience. “Unlike the current Pro Series which continues to use a Mac mini as the brain of the system, the Smart Series is based on the Smart Host HST-SMRTD which is a compact, custom Linux device running Savant software to provide automation and control functions, user interface configurations, system administration and monitoring.” David says: “Although intended for smaller installations that do not need the full power of the Pro Series, the new Smart Host can support up to 20 audio zones and eight video zones with the addition of the new SSA-3220 multiroom audio controller and the new SLN-88BT video matrix with HDBaseT signal distribution. “Control of the entire Smart System is achieved with up to 20 TrueControl user interface Apps (initially for iOS, with Android to follow) and also up to 20 of the new SUR-0500 Wi-Fi remote control handsets.” David explains that the complete Smart Series packages start at just £1599 SRP (exc VAT). This single room control system includes the HST-SMRTD Smart Host, SUR-0500 Wi-Fi remote and a SSC-0008 control interface to control 2x serial and 6x IR devices. Like all Savant systems, this package can be expanded with additional remotes, control interfaces, etc. for multi-room control, but for larger systems the Pro Series will still be required. Essential Home Automation Systems up to four functional elements. As part of a KNX system several functions can be combined in a single control unit: a temperature controller, information display, tactile sensor and timer. Lighting scenarios and other applications can be adapted to changing needs easily and without any software. Finally there are the more modest models S1, B.3 and B.7 which the company says have been designed with elegance and functionality in mind.” The team at Ivory Egg is keen to bring EI readers up to date with the KNX platform. KNX sales manager at Ivory Egg, Mark Warburton, says: “It has been an exciting year so far for KNX with a big update to the standard to further support the integration of other communication mediums. Whilst the majority of KNX devices are based on the two wire bus, the KNX specification also allows for communication via RF, Ethernet and even Powerline. This latest update ensures RF sub-networks are fully supported and includes an overhaul of the security protocol for KNX over IP.” The Ivory Egg team will be sending regular updates look out for an upcoming UK launch and training events post the Light and Building show in March Mark explains: “One of the biggest developments of late is the unveiling of the overhaul of ETS5. This is the single software tool used to program all KNX devices and the main updates enhance the speed of the program and the simplicity of the interface. “As KNX already natively controls so many aspects of a building, the need for integrating different systems becomes greatly reduced. This makes the entire installation more straight forward and allows you to utilise a single bus for the majority of the control infrastructure, often using a single keypad as well.” Mark adds: “Nevertheless it is still possible to integrate KNX with a host of other platforms and control systems. Savant is the latest AV manufacturer to provide a native KNX gateway. With so many aspects to the KNX system, getting involved can seem daunting but Ivory Egg is here to help. “For over eight years we have specialised in working closely with system installers to ensure they have all the training and tools to deliver every KNX project to the highest standard. From specification to logistics and support we strive to make the entire process as easy as possible. Our team comprises staff that have years of on-site experience so we understand your needs. We are also keen to help you make working with KNX a profitable area of your business and we offer excellent trade discounts.”

Hager has added a range of Berker switches and sensors to its KNX based domovea system

AWE and URC have been building a strong partnership of late as the URC brand transitioned into a full-blown automation platform offering. Recent additions to the URC concept include a remote control for use exclusively with the Total Control system. The TRC-1080 means installers can provide a Wi-Fi remote control capable of advanced two-way integration with IP cameras or Sonos, lighting systems or HVAC, all at an affordable price. The unit allows for an entirely Wi-Fi infrastructure, making large-scale installations easy to plan, manage and install. Featuring a backlit high resolution two-inch LCD screen, the TRC-1080 is designed to offer attractive looks as well as impressive functionality. Thanks to pick-up sensor technology, the remote control automatically wakes up from standby when lifted from its piano black table-top charging cradle. The button layout is described as un-cluttered and the remote has four colour coded buttons, allowing fast access to interactive TV services and Blu-ray/DVR functions. AWE is also bullish about the saleability of the URC platform. The flexibility to add up to 132 sensors across a system means that intelligent macros can be triggered by light level changes, audio sensing, current sensing or a change in a contact closure. AWE adds that the MRX-4SEN Sensor Extender and six new sensors expand the power of the Total Control system and enable exciting new control

Essential Home Automation Systems The RTI brand is continuing to innovate with new controllers and expanded third-part compatibility

possibilities. The Accelerator software gives the programmer a simple process to build alarm timers, sleep timers and event-based automation, all built into default menus for the client to enable and schedule as they please. Security functionality has also been the manufacturer’s thoughts with the introduction of dedicated CAM-DC1 and CAM-DC0 cameras to the range. Benefitting from a compact design, the cameras are available in two options as an indoor mini-dome, or a tough, vandal-proof outdoor dome camera. Offering H.264/MJPEG compression, motion detection, web-based set-up, administration, control and upgrade the cameras keep in control via a 32-bit embedded CPU running Linux. As well as the five cameras in the URC range, Total Control Accelerator software has built-in modules for Panasonic, Axis, Ebode, IC Realtime and LILIN.

Making the right choice Mark Taylor, business manager of Invision UK, asks: “With so many different Control solutions around, how do you choose? Invision UK backs two very different control solutions in Elan g! and RTI both of which offer their own take on the home automation market. “ELAN g! is renowned for its multi-room capabilities and whole home control. The beauty of ELANg! is its ease of scalability. Every ELAN system comprises, an HC System Controller, available in four models, allowing the g! system to integrate four, six, eight or 12 subsystems. Interfaces include wall-mounted ELAN touch panels, smartphones and tablets with the free ELAN g!Mobile App, PC and Mac computers, or an ELAN HR2 remote control. From there you can add amplifiers, multi-room AV controllers, lighting dimmers, thirdparty peripherals such as ONVIF surveillance cameras and electronic door locks and additional user interfaces.” Mark explains: “The g! system can integrate every major subsystem in a home, including audio, video, security, surveillance, HVAC, lighting, motorised window shades, pool/spa controls, irrigation, garage doors, electronic door locks and in-home intercoms. With coherent GUI between all the interfaces, ELAN g! is easy for the end user to navigate and take control of all their equipment. ELAN maintains and regularly adds to a vast driver library that allows integrators to connect thousands of the best third-party components for every subsystem. ELAN g! is compatible with many of the top lighting, security, HVAC, irrigation and pool/spa systems available today, with new drivers constantly in development.

46 Essential Install

Elan g! offers ease of install and scaleability

This makes it easy for integrators to add components and expand the system after initial installation.” A further key ability of the system pointed to by Mark is the remote access for regular maintenance and troubleshooting. Invision’s proposition also takes in the RTI brand and Mark comments: “RTI brings variation and full customisation to the table along with very powerful and flexible control. RTI has always been renowned for its range of handheld controllers and customisable interface platform. This is continued with the new award winning remote controls and in-wall controllers, such as the T2X and KX7, award winning RTI Panel App for Apple and Android devices and a revamp to the integrated multi-room amplifiers AD4 & AD8.” Mark adds: “RTI is still the only manufacturer to have programing software, Integration Designer, placed in the Cedia Hall of Fame. Integration Designer was awarded for its flexibility to customise every area of the control interface, logical programing structure and user-friendly layout. “RTI has a large range of control drivers that integrate with the most popular brands on the market in AV, HVAC and security. With the SDK platform, dealers can use coding skills to invent control drivers giving them ultimate flexibility. RTI’s driver store, located on the dealer section of the website, is the one stop shop for compatible RTI control drivers. Dealers can upload their own drivers, under the 3rd Party Drivers section, link them back to their website to get information about the driver and any cost that may be involved.” Legrand says it has put a clear focus on developing the user interfaces (UI) for both its Vantage and Arteor building automation ranges over the past six months, with the launch of the new Equinox range for the Vantage system, the new 10in touch screen for the Arteor system and the revamp of the 1.2in LCD Arteor touch screen.

Essential Home Automation Systems Legrand explains that it carried out extensive consumer research to inform the development of the Equinox 7in, which has been designed to enable installers to create a UI based on enduser preferences. Combining ease of operation with extensive functionality and stylish aesthetics, Legrand says the Vantage Equinox 73 is the first touch screen for the CI market to feature a glassto-the-edge LCD screen and incorporates both light and presence sensors, enabling the units to be programmed to respond to ambient light and/or detect the user so that the display is always visible. Providing a three-layer UI that enables the end user to swipe through the available functions displaying three at a time, the Equinox 73 provides a multi-room overview of each zone. The UI has been designed for simple and intuitive operation, which mirrors Legrand’s Equinox Apps for tablets and smart phones and users can navigate down through each of the three levels from a summary display home page, to a full screen on one function to the edit mode where they can customise their system. Customisation options include personalisation by user, scene, functionality or room and the system also offers multiple languages. For Arteor Legrand has introduced the new 10in touchscreen, a slimline wall-mounted unit that requires no separate surround. The unit combines carousel and swipe navigation, with Internet access and customisable profiles to offer a simple-to-operate, flexible and personalised control screen. Individual user profiles can be personalised with images, customised control settings and personal preferences, including music playlists and end users can operate the system by user, control function or room. The device also offers on-screen web browsing via Wi-Fi and can multi-task, enabling the user to play music files and view images at the same time. Providing a central hub from which to control all the home’s functions, the Arteor 10in touch-screen can also be used to view the home’s door entry system and CCTV images. With integral USB, mini USB and SD card slots, it enables the user to manage multimedia files too, which can also be managed using the LAN network or via IP. Legrand has also recently revamped its 1.2in LCD Arteor touch-screen to offer additional functionality with simple-to-operate control of up to four functions, including lighting, temperature, sound and energy management, using customisable icons all at a competitive price. Both the Vantage and Arteor Systems are supported by Legrand’s training programme at the company’s dedicated training centre at its Birmingham HQ along with CPD seminars delivered at partners’ own premises. The company has recently appointed a new training manager, Matt Crunden, to coordinate training and ensure that content meets installers’ needs. Legrand also supports installers with the company’s ‘My Open’ community portal (www.myopen-legrandgroup.com), which provides resources including technical information, drivers for communications and integration and access to Legrand’s open webnet language to enable easier programming and integration. Both platforms are available through specialist distributor Asheridge Communications.

Legrand supports its Arteor and Vantage platforms with a complete training package

Essential Home Automation Systems

Enado is Wyrestorm’s browser based approach to the control and automation sector

Fresh introductions include a new Omnitouch 7in touch-screen offering control of security, energy and entertainment systems. The 7in high resolution screen allows security system adjustments, viewing of event logs and surveillance cameras and the ability to lock or unlock doors. The unit can adjust up to 64 thermostats including ventilation and humidity settings; dim up to 256 lights using slider bars; adjust pool pumps, fountains, compressors and exterior screens as well as control multiroom audio systems. Control is available in Spanish, French, Italian and English. Also new is an updated Snap-Link Mobile App for iPhone, iPad and Android providing complete control of the home or multiple properties. The Key Digital Compass Control, from The MultiRoom Company, is described as a comprehensive automation system and has been built to use Apple’s iOS devices as its backbone. The system provides installers with IR, two-way RS-232 with feedback and two-way TCP/IP control for flexibility and maximum compatibility with new or existing devices. Compass Control also provides control via relays and sensors. When programming the system via the Compass Navigator PC editor software, installers are given three separate database managers to make programming fast and to enable editing of all command code sets, which allows Compass Control to be tailored to each and every system. On screen graphics may also be personalised to include, for example, the customer’s own room as the photographic representation of the zone being controlled. A range of Compass Control’s Compass Alliance Partners (CAP) means the system has drivers for many products including video electronics, lighting, heating, air-conditioning and security systems, including: Centralite, Denon, LG, Lutron, Marantz, Russound, Panasonic and Yamaha. Combining the knowledge and expertise from the different

CAP brands has allowed Compass Control to develop into a complete turnkey control solution. With security becoming a high priority for many installs. Control4 has taken the initiative in promoting increased compatibility with its system and CCTV cameras an recording equipment. Resulting from the increased implementation of its Simple Device Discovery Protocol (SDDP) by five of the top security monitoring manufacturers, this new level of compatibility offers in addition support for two brands of NVRs and more than 1,500 models of surveillance cameras. Control4 says it has developed new IP camera driver-creation tools that will simplify Dealer installation and provide new features to deliver a robust and accessible remote security monitoring experience for homeowners. To make deployment and integration less time consuming and more feature-rich, Control4 has also provided the leading security camera manufacturers with access to a newly published camera proxy API, which is available in the Control4 DriverWorks SDK. This API will enable security manufacturers like Channel Vision, Lilin, Planet, QNAP, and Snap AV to develop Control4-certified drivers that will take full advantage of the unique capabilities of each of the individual models that they manufacture. And since SDDP will be deployed in these new cameras, integrating popular features into the Control4 ecosystem – like facial and license plate recognition and advanced motion detection – will be no more complicated than dragging and dropping the driver into place within Composer Pro. Network setup will also be more efficient because Control4-certified cameras will no longer require a static IP address. In addition, all of Control4’s mobile Apps will fully support the h.264 video streaming capabilities, which is utilised by many cameras to deliver superior video quality at 80% or more bandwidth savings.

Essential In-Depth Product Report

AYE CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, IT’S GOOD Even Somali pirates and a besieged Tom Hanks look great with the new HD91 3D 1080p projector, says Optoma home cinema channel manager Tyrone Hammill.

The HD91 has good throw ratio and lens shift, is compact, lightweight and easy to install

Essential Install (EI):Can you take us through some of the key performance characteristics of the new projector? Tyrone Hammill (TH): “The HD91 projector harnesses the latest LED technology. Benefits include improvement of colour performance and accuracy, energy saving, almost silent operation and installation flexibility. “New features include image processing that gives the impression of near-4K image quality without the artefacts associated with moving pixel systems. The next generation of our frame-interpolation processing, PureMotion4, eliminates motion blurring or image judder. “PureColour balances colours for vivid images, Deep Colour reproduces billions of colours, Dynamic Black uses ultra-fast LED switching times to produce deeper blacks and DLP technology from Texas Instruments uses millions of tiny mirrors to maximise light output and contrast. Finally, the HD91 can accept high definition sources at 24 frames per second and display movies as the director intended.”

EI: ‘The perceived brightness from the HD91 can be twice that of an equivalent lamp-based projector.’Can you explain this statement, what is meant by ‘perceived brightness’? and what advantages does it offer? TH: “Although the brightness is just 1,000 LED lumens, the perceived brightness of the HD91 can be up to twice that of an equivalent lamp-based projector due to a phenomenon known as the Helmholtz-Kohlrausch (HK) effect. This allows the HD91 to handle low levels of ambient light with less impact on image quality than lamp-based systems. Separate red, blue and green LEDs produce intense, yet accurate colours.”

EI: Can you highlight some of the functionality that makes the product particularly suited to the Custom Install market? TH: “This LED projector has a good throw ratio and excellent lens shift, which together with the light weight and compact size of the HD91, makes installation easy. A full-colour management system allows the colour to be adjusted, useful if projecting on to a wall rather than a screen.”

EI: Tell us anything else you feel installers should know about Optoma and the HD91 TH: “The combination of lens shift and a wide 1.9x zoom range enables a wider range of projector placement possibilities. The lightweight 7kg and compact size of the HD91 simplifies installation further. “Installers can calibrate the picture quality to the physical setting of the room and the full-colour management system allows installers to choose from five preset colour gamuts (Native, Adobe, DLP-C, HDTV and SMPTE-C), six colour temperatures (D50, D65, D83, D93 and Native).”

EI: What are the key advantages of LED over other technologies? TH: “LED technology offers consistent brightness and colour performance with minimal degradation, so the HD91 will maintain image quality without the need for expensive lamp changes or re-calibration throughout its lifetime. Optoma provides a five-year warranty for the light source. The LEDs do not need lengthy warm-up or cool-down cycles and start-up and shut-down almost instantly.” EI: Are there favourite film clips that show the product in its best light demonstration wise? TH: “The 3D performance is excellent: Optoma showed Life of Pi at the Bristol Show in February - great motion handling and no crosstalk. For realistic colour reproduction in 2D we screened Captain Phillips.”

53 Essential Install

EI: What mounting options are available for the machine? TH: “Two: The flush mount is easy to set up, allows quick adjustment and has a handy projector reconnect/disconnect, +/- 30° rotation, +/-20° pitch and roll. The pole mount also features the projector reconnect/disconnect facility and is good for vaulted and cathedral ceilings and wall mounting. LED technology, which produces less heat, means the projector can be installed closer to walls or ceilings.” EI: Are there any anamorphic lens options? TH: “The HD91 allows users to connect an anamorphic lens to play cinemscope 2.35:1 using the full 1080p resolution of the projector to allow viewing of both16:9 and superwide content without seeing black bars.”

Essential Home Cinema Seating

The seat of power

FrontRow is looking for new demonstration dealers

Take a seat for a tour around some of the best options in home cinema seating.

The Love seat from Acoustic Smart will be on show very soon in Anthem AV Solution’s spanking new demo facility

Offering value for money, FrontRow home cinema seating delivers comfort and quality design and can now be found in a growing number of award winning home cinema installations. The Home Cinema chairs have many seating options from single to an infinite number of configurations due to their modular design, so whether it’s a single chair or a row of twelve seats, FrontRow says it can provide the solution. Popular configurations include two, three, four and five seater curved recliners. All seat modules have electric recliners and are available in full high grade leather or fabric. All home cinema seats come with a comprehensive fiveyear warranty which includes mechanical as well as fabric and leather cover. Accidental damage is also covered which includes repair of rips, tears and scuffs as well as the removal of stains for full peace of mind. All modules are finished in top quality maintenance free leather in an extensive range of colours and patterns to ensure they integrate into any décor. All leathers are dyed throughout reducing the risk of unsightly scratches. The range of leathers include the hard wearing popular New Club corrected leather which means further modules can be added at a later date if additional seating is required in the future or if a change in the seating configuration is required. The popular modular system is now available in manual as well as electric and prices start from £595.00 inc VAT for a single, manually operated, recliner in fabric. The comprehensive range of colours and fabrics are regularly updated. Delivery is made direct to the customer to make life easier for the dealer and seat backs can be removed (if necessary) to ease the delivery in the more awkward loft or basement home cinemas. rumble pads and cables are easily hidden under the chair for a neat and tidy end result. FrontRow offer customer’s free technical advice and a seating layout design service if needed. The company is also happy to work with basic room dimensions or scaled plans. Generous trade discounts are available and FrontRow is looking for new demonstration dealers throughout the UK. A new addition to the Anthem AV Solutions family, the distributor explains that the Acoustic Smart range of cinema seating is hand built to order in America by a team of craftspeople who are trained in precise, time-honoured techniques. Virtually every aspect of the seats is customisable from the seat and arm widths to the arm wedge for curved arrangements. Optional features include heat and massage options, home automation, Clark Synthesis transducer mounting hardware and matching Ottomans and custom pillows. The European range of products are finished in 100% all over leather and include the Transformer seat, which Anthem says is the only cinema seating product to have ever been awarded the CES Innovations Award. Every seat in the range are true incliners – requiring less than 1in clearance behind, allowing the most efficient use of floor space.

Essential Home Cinema Seating Seating from Acoustic Smart, including the Transformer, will soon be available to view in Anthem’s brand new demonstration facility in East Sussex. Elite Home Theatre Seating (Elite HTS) has built a strong reputation for quality due to some innovative styling and high levels of quality and craftsmanship. Every seat is hand-made to the client’s exact specification with choices including Valentino Leather, Cine Suede, Silk Leather (colour samples available). The arm/back options come in over 170 standard styles and a whole range of layout configurations are offered including single seats, loveseats, couches, straight rows, curved rows and chaise long. Every seat benefits from a high level of specification as standard, including power recline (manual available upon request), Wall Hugger design (just 110mm wall clearance required) and a chiropractic-endorsed ergonomic design which ensures high-quality lumbar support and comfort. The products also come with a 10-year guarantee on the industrial grade heavy-duty recline mechanisms and the high quality ‘low memory’ foam used in the seat cushions. Based in its Glasgow HQ, the company says it works closely with custom installers and interior designers to ensure clients are delighted with their home theatre seating and can offer a fully customised service having the skills to create many bespoke options. The company can offer illuminated or even gold-plated cup-holders, D-Box or Crowson seat shakers, extra wide seats, client-supplied fabric, embroidered family crest or corporate logo on headrests, sweat-resistant perforated leather, hidden storage compartments and swivel trays. Elite can also offer customdesigned wide arms for iPad/AMX/Crestron controller storage/ charging and offers a 3-D seating layout design service which optimises the position, quantity and configuration of seats. Elite can also install the seats should this be required. Available from Habitech, the Palladio Cinema Seating range is designed to not only offer comfort, but plenty of margin, all at a keen price point. With several options servicing the higher end part of the market, including Salamander (also available from the distributor) Habitech wanted to create a range that delivered on quality, but targeted the more modest home cinema projects typically using a projector at around 3K and comparable screen and audio system. Working direct with a Far East manufacturer Habitech says it has created a compelling proposition to target this part of the market with a range of powered cinema seats. The Palladio Cinema range offers models in four SKUs: a single seat and a ‘love seat’ wide enough for two, both in finely stitched, upholstered brown or black leather. The seats have near-silent ‘worm-drive’ motors for a uniform recline, coupled with an advanced two stage mechanism, which activates the footrest extension before the back begins to lower. Accurate within increments of 0.1mm, the movement is controlled from an inlaid armrest panel. The opposite arm incorporates a stainless steel cup holder and Habitech says comfort is guaranteed by the expertly cushioned poly-sprung design of the seat, lumbar and shoulder supports and via an adjustable headrest. CINEAK is one of the top names in the market and maintains its position with a continuing eye for innovation and style. Always one to make a splash at the ISE, the company used the event to launch IP control of its motorised seating mechanisms. Claiming a market first, the CIC or CINEAK Intelligent Control automation module allows the installer to provide control of the DUAL motorised recline/incline mechanism via the RS485 or IP protocol by any home control/

automation system, which uses these protocols. The new CIC module replaces CINEAK’s previous Contact Closure module for controlling the operation of its recline/incline mechanisms and allows intelligent control and operation of the individual footrest and backrest operation of its chairs. CINEAK’s motorised articulating headrest can be controlled as well over the same system. Features include ‘all-off’; press a button and all of the chairs automatically return to their upright position, Pre-sets; program a users’ preferred seating position- similar to a memory-setting in a car and Single button control; the push of a single button can reset the entire chair mechanism to its full upright or inclined/reclined position. The feature also offers control of the footrest, backrest and articulating headrest from a touch panel or tablet/phone device. In chair design, another recent addition is an incliner mechanism on the popular Ferrier model. The FERRIER recliner version was released in 2012, but is now available in the new version as well offering a DUAL-motorised incliner mechanism, which allows the user to adjust the position of the backrest/ seat independently from the position of the footrest. In terms of design, CINEAK says the Ferrier presents a unique approach in applying diamond stitching patterns to a home entertainment seat, while maintaining style and increasing comfort. The Ferrier features fine European leather or fabric upholstery, a steel recliner/incline mechanism, an articulating headrest that allows for desired viewing condition and proper head and neck support as well as a black or silver push-button to operate the mechanism. The maker says hand-cut foam cushioning of highdensity promises years of comfort and performance. CINEAK products are custom-made to order, which allows for a wide range of personalisation including heating and cooling ventilation, hot and cold cup holders, electronic lumbar support and D-BOX functionality. Genesis Technologies can provide access to home theatre products from the renown Poltrona Frau group which has significant presence in some of the world’s top concert halls and auditoriums as well as designing for companies such as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Pershing Yachts. Premiere !K and !Q are designed for the home entertainment market and are upholstered in Pelle Frau leather and are resistant to staining. The products are designed to represent the ultimate in Italian excellence and style and can be personalised in colour, finish and stitching patterns. The chairs offer comfort with lumbar support and the Premiere !K sports a unique

Essential Home Cinema Seating CINEAK has introduced an incliner mechanism on the Ferrier model as well as IP control of seating adjustment

electrically adjustable back and leg support. The Cine-Italia brand offers a different take on the stylish home cinema seating sector with a look and attention to detail similar to high-end car seating. Described as top in its class for comfort, the NIKITA has been created to offer a ‘chic Italian’ appearance and offers a high level of attention to detail from the frame, to the motion of the seat control, foam design and Italian leathers and stitch detail. The seat can be offered in multi row options with dividers ranging from 130mm up to 500mm creating a wide range of options on arc angles. The seating can be bolted together either in cinema seats with dividers in-between each seat or in sofa format without arm dividers. The divider can also come as a bar trolley with pull out front and cup holders comes in either standard form or as the seat controller (on the rim control buttons are positioned) providing easy control by simply hovering a finger of the control button. The cup holders are also supplied with a chill plate and the mechanics of the seat carry a three year guarantee . The range is available in thirty three standard leather colours in the range B finish and the C range offers the finest Italian leathers in twenty three colour choices. The company can also offer cow hide, suede and other ‘Exotic’ finishes such as ostrich, crocodile and snake. Seats can also be created using a suitable fabric chosen by the customer. The chairs are available to view in the Artcouistic showroom in Chelmsford Essex. The Home Cinema Modules family of seating is available from Armour Home with options including the Roma which are

described as comfortable and fully electrically operated cinema armchairs. Designed to offer smooth lines and timeless design via highquality leather upholstery, the seats offer a serious proposition around which to build a home cinema experience. The manufacturer says all that was necessary was done to make this seat as comfortable as possible using high quality foam. Together with the use of high grain leather, the Roma also offers balanced ergonomics and a smooth touch. The strong metal frame and motor ensure smooth operation and use of the electrical incliner and foot-rest mechanism. The Milano offers what is described as a luxurious and modern design. Again electrically adjustable, other features include refrigerated and/or heated cup holder to offer a combination of style and technology. The Leggett & Platt steel frame offers an optimal smooth operation while high-quality German motors power the dual motor driven recliner system allowing the user to adjust foot and backrest separately from each other. With careful attention to detail, the Milano contains brushed metal control buttons with LED backlight and uses top grain

Essential Home Cinema Seating Italian leather upholstery. Adagio is Italian and means ‘to ease’ and as the name suggests, this chair offers an optimal solution to ease and relax while watching a movie or concert. The maker says the smooth rounded lines easily flow over into each other, combining the ease of a relax sofa with the functionality of a traditional cinema seat. The Adagio wall-a-way sofa allows the user to control the movement of the seat part and the adjustment of the backrest, footrest and headrest separately. The brushed metal control buttons and cup holders are integrated in the arm rests with careful attention to detail. Cinema Modules are available from stock in two high grain leather colours or on request in any custom upholstery. A company with lots of experience in the market is Barmans with its DrinkStuff website which offers a range of home cinema seating, some with immediate dispatch. The company says the choice of seats available include top grain Italian leather and incline rather than recline (chairs can be as close as 10cm from the wall). The integrated can coolers can chill a can or bottle in 90 seconds and the seats can also come with 10 vibration massage pads in five positions, lumbar heat support and a handy storage box. The seats are Scotch Guarded and come in black, brown and a smaller amount of cream chairs. The seats are available in singles or curved rows of 2-5 seats. Pulse Marketing says it has seen a huge amount of growth in the premium seating market as more dealers are introducing Fortress Seating to clients. Pulse says that before, people were uncomfortable (no pun intended!) with the idea of chairs that retail at more than £1500, however, the fact that these chairs are built as a bespoke item for each and every installation seems to have gained momentum as clients look to move away from ‘off the shelf’ products. Barry Sheldrick, UK sales manager, says: “So what exactly does bespoke seating mean? Well it means that there are no limits at all in what can be built. Whereas most seating suppliers

recline and, of course, the recommended screen viewing angles to ensure the optimum viewing experience. We also have the choice of Ottomans and bean bags to make the most of smaller rooms and maximise the number of seats enjoying the action. It is important to remember that Fortress don’t just build custom cinema chairs, we have worked on a fantastic custom sofa project with Luke at New Land Solutions that has just received sign off. This beautiful sofa was designed by the interior designer and built to the specifications laid out by Future Automation in order to fit onto their custom built motorisation platform! It doesn’t get much more custom than that. Get in touch with us to experience quality cinema seating, backed up by a 10 year warranty, and discuss any projects you are working on.” Stressless Space, Wave, Arion and Legend are four superb contemporary models from Norwegian manufacturer Ekornes that create a home cinema atmosphere with ease. All are available in leather and fabric options with varying leg styles and trims, as two or three seaters along with individual chairs. All have reclining mechanisms and come as high or low back options offering the best possible neck and back support. Some also come with height adjustable headrests for the taller customer. Another key feature is that although they can be linked home cinema style using the Sector Arm or Sector Unit, they can be bought free standing too, for those who want a greater degree of flexibility in the lounge. Storage is another given with Stressless, the armrests of the Sectors slide open for holding remote controls for example. For restless feet, a range of double, single and oval ottomans offer even more comfort and again provide storage or table space, depending on the model.

give you a choice of leather colour, Fortress will finish your clients chairs in any material at all; whether they supply it or not! This gives you the freedom to work with the interior designer and cover the chairs with a material that they like, rather than the material that Fortress can get access to. “So now we have worked out what colour and material the chairs are going to be, we need to get to work on the layout. Again, the options here are unlimited. We have choice of the height of the back rest, seat base width, arm rest width, wedge arms to create a curve, cup holders, storage compartments, inductance charging pads for integrated control systems, D-BOX motorisation, love seats, platform risers, tray tables, reading lamps, aisle lights and an almost countless list of more options.” Barry adds: “We have worked on many projects with our dealers to ensure that the seats fit within the room, but still leave decent sized walk ways around the chairs, ample room to fully More Information:

HOT STUFF FROM CARLO GAVAZZI Carlo Gavazzi has ramped up its cutting-edge technology in the smart-house environment by launching the SHOWEAGPS weather station. While you can’t change the weather, you can use the information from the weather station to control your home environment. The technology measures temperature, wind speed and brightness and uses three separate sensors for east, south and west directions. Special filters recognise twilight and dawn, while wind measurements are taken silently through hail and sub-zero conditions. Even turbulent air and anabatic winds can be recorded in a device that boasts numerous meteorological measurements in one single unit. Data is sent seamlessly to a homes controller via the RS485 and information can then SHOWEAGPS measures temperature, wind speed and brightness be used to control the behaviour of the home. and has three sensors Intense sunlight can trigger window blinds to protect furnishings from the effects of UV rays. A drop in temperature outside may trip an increase of temperature inside, meanwhile an increase of wind speed could automatically close exterior blinds and awnings. The SHOWEAGPS is IP44 protected and has an operating temperature of -30°C to +50°C (-22° to 122°F). It includes a 1.2W heated precipitation sensor, which excludes any false reporting as a result of fog or dew and dries quickly after precipitation has stopped. An integrated GPS receiver provides longitude and latitude data, as well as the position of the sun in azimuth and elevation measurements and carries CE marking and EMC EN 60730-1:2000-11+ A11:2002 approval. PERFECT PITCH FOR PARTIES Synchronicity from Cabasse and Deezer frees up more than 30 million tracks

A new multi-room synchronised playback facility for the Cabasse range of Stream players gives users access to more than 30 million tracks from Deezer. The latest update to the Cabasse Audio Control App, available for iOS and Android, offers synchronised playback of all selected music from the user’s network across all the Stream players installed in the home. “We developed the synchronisation function for our App so people can use one source, but stream the same music in sync to different parts of the house – perfect for parties,” says Christophe Cabasse. “Customers can enjoy Deezer’s vast catalogue from the palm of their hand using our App.” Users access players individually or split multiple players into several groups. The relative sound level of each player may be set and the level of each group, adjusted with one single control to provide flexibility and customisation for each user’s circumstances.

The partnership with Deezer enables users of Cabasse Stream products to access more than 30 million music tracks via the Deezer module available with the Cabasse App update. Users can discover the new titles selected by the Deezer team or create their own playlists. They can add favourite titles, albums and artists and play them from a smartphone or tablet over the Cabasse Stream players. Using one Smartphone the Deezer selection can be played by the Stream 1 smart loudspeaker, the 2.1 Stream 3 System and a Hi-Fi connected to the Stream Source. WE’LL BLINK A BLINK A BLINK

Blink and you might miss the new 40g Bluetooth Micro-DAC from Arcam

Arcam has launched an affordable Bluetooth Micro-DAC called the miniBlink for music streaming from systems including Android, Apple, PC, Mac, iPad, Tablet and phone. The miniBlink was inspired by the Arcam rBlink and is the first in a new Arcam mini range of digital microcomponents at affordable prices for mass and online distribution. It was built to offer the best sound quality possible from Bluetooth except the rBlink. The tiny, 40g portable device brings High Definition Sound to streaming and offers CSR Blue Core 7 low-noise Bluetooth front-end and aptX, AAC. The technology offers signal de-jittering and uses the advanced technology from Arcam’s High-Definition Bluetooth DAC, the rBlink, but carefully re-engineered to offer cost-effectiveness. It uses a high-density moulded enclosure shaped like a pebble, with an internal aerial and a 3.5mm output jack. It is powered by a micro-sized USB power supply from the mains, a USB socket on a computer or from the USB socket on the back of the rCube portable sound dock. The miniBlink aims to bring good High-Definition Bluetooth quality to a wide audience and was fashioned to offer an easy and flexible way to access music from mobile phones to laptops. INVISION SETS SAIL WITH UNIDOCK Invision UK is distributing a new universal in-wall mobile phone charging unit from iRoom’s sister brand CmoDe. The uniDock, in black or white, has the three major connections, Apple Lightning Connector, Micro-USB and USB 2.0. Users rotate uniDock to the right connector. The Micro-USB connection can be rotated and slid to allow devices, with an off-centre USB port, to be centralised to the dock. Invision UK product specialist David Meyerowitz says: “This product is ideal for any hotel room or communal area to give a universal charging point for mobile devices. The age-old problem of not having the correct travel adaptor, cable or convenient place to charge your devices is eradicated.” Users can illuminate the dock with a touch-sensitive button on the front panel to give a soft light and when not in use, the uniDock can be pushed tidily in to the wall. The uniDock is designed to fit standard EU electrical back boxes with a depth greater than 35mm

so it can be fitted to the mains power supply with no need for bespoke fittings. David says: “Other manufactures produce single chargers for the iPhone or for devices using a USB connector, but in many cases these are not in-wall or on-wall products. They are plug-in devices that require cables.” More information: Invision UK +44 (0)1359 270280 www.invisionuk.com

CABINET WITHIN A CABINET

Concept 40 attacks head on the fundamental problem in speaker design cabinet resonance

A new floorstanding flagship loudspeaker range that allows the drive units to play music minus cabinet interference has been launched. The Concept 40 from Armour Home brand Q Acoustics incorporates ultra-low resonance Gelcore Construction cabinets. These allow the loudspeaker’s drive units to play the music, unconstrained by cabinet interference. Q Acoustics’ brand director Alex Munro said: “The new Concept 40 delivers a sonic performance that until now has only been enjoyed by enthusiasts who could afford wonderful, but very expensive, high-end loudspeakers. “Our design engineers decided to attack head on the big fundamental problem in speaker design, which is cabinet resonance. Cabinet resonance occurs at some level in all speakers and obliterates much of the low-level quiet bits of information that help recreate a realistic soundstage.”

Gelcore Construction offers a ‘cabinet within a cabinet’, with a special resonance-cancelling compound adhering between the inner and outer shells to absorb movement. When compared to a good conventional cabinet, radiated power (colouration) throughout the critical mid-band (voice frequencies) reduces by an average of more than -6dB. In the high and low frequencies the effect is even greater, with improvements in excess of -10dB. Specifications include double woofer, 2-way reflex enclosure, 90dB sensitivity, a frequency response of 53Hz to 22kHZ and recommended power of 25W to 150W.

YAMAHA SOUNDS OUT NEW SOUND-BARS Two new entry-point surround sound-bars from Yamaha offer flexible connection panel, virtual surround sound processing and the benefit of Bluetooth technology. The YAS-93 builds on predecessor the YAS-101 and offers a flexible connection panel and virtual surround sound processing. The YAS-103 sits above the YAS-93 in the range and boasts the added benefit of Bluetooth technology for connection to mobile and other Bluetooth enabled products.. Users can also control the sound-bar’s features and volume using the Yamaha Home Theatre Controller App. The flexible connection panel on the back of the YAS-93 and YAS-103 connects to virtually any TV. The technology features Optical, Coaxial and RCA inputs and both sound-bars include an optical cable in the box. Using the RCA Stereo input users can also connect an iPod, MP3 Player or any analogue device to the YAS-93 or YAS-103. Both sound-bars are flexible in placement, with simple eye-holes on the back to mount on the wall with a couple of screws. They also sit in front of a TV on a cabinet or rack. They feature an IR flasher on the back allowing the sound-bar to pass through any IR signal it receives to the TV. This ensures there is no problem if the sound-bar is placed too close to the TV. The sound-bar will also learn from any TV remote, so once it learns VOLUME UP/DOWN and POWER ON/OFF users can control systems with just the TV remote. Pakedge Device & Software has released a new range of AV Switches offering installers a way of handling large networks for mobile, connected and latency-sensitive devices. The S24P16av and S8Hav are tailor-made for the CI market with clean, rack-mountable rear cable installation and an integral super-quiet cooling fan. The technology is distributed in the UK by RGB Communications. The switches also provide installers with connectivity to Pakedge’s BakPak platform for remote management, diagnostics and troubleshooting across disparate networks. This allows installers to streamline aftersales and on-call services by accessing networks via the BakPak App. Both switches include TruStream technology onboard to prioritise latency-sensitive content such as VOIP, streaming and online gaming. All Pakedge devices are compatible with third-party manufacturers and fit into networks from companies such as AMX, Control4, Crestron and Savant. The S24P16av has Gigabit ports and provides 802.3af PoE power to up to 16 ports. Each of these can be power-cycled in isolation to reboot any failing PoE devices without enforcing downtime across the entire network. The units have 4 SFP fibre ports to accommodate longer cable runs. Pakedge’s S8Hav offers 8 PoE ports or up to 4 PoE+ ports for the inclusion of high bandwidth devices such as WAPs, HDMI over IP and high-res IP cameras.
