NEW POP UP SHOPS IN WESTGATE ARCADE We’ve heard there’ll be three popup shops joining Westgate Arcade at Queensgate Shopping Centre in the run up to Christmas. From Wednesday November 13 to Tuesday December 24, two of Westgate Arcade’s previous tenants – Very Craftea and the Wildlife Trust – will be joined by newcomer The Small Business Co. The Small Business Co. has teamed up with Etsy seller Fox & Rainbow selling personalised gifts. From festive pyjamas to personalised bags, baubles, t-shirts and more, the store will stock gifts galore, with many under £20. There will even be an express printing service where you can collect your customised gift within an hour! They’ll be joined by Very Craftea, selling delicious, quality, loose leaf, socially responsible tea and cute craft kits which make great Christmas gifts. Also returning to Westgate Arcade is the Wildlife Trust, stocking a variety of goodies including books, insect homes, bird boxes, calendars, Christmas cards and stocking fillers, it’s a must on your Christmas shopping trip.
SKI FILMS AT TALLINGTON LAKES Tallington Lakes is set to turn cinema as it screens several all ski films at the pro shop action ideal for ski and snowboard fans. On November 6, Faction ‘The Collective Film’ will include thrills, spills, giveaways and loads more surprises including a free recreational skiing and freestyle session from 7-8pm. It’s free entry and starts at 8pm. On November 27 it’s the Picture Organic Clothing film ‘Shelter’ about ski/snowboard touring in the Alps. Motivated by a passion and love for the mountains, five friends travel from hut to hut, observing firsthand the impact of climate change on the Alps. Expect a great evening with giveaways, food and drink, and free recreational skiing and freestyle session between 78pm. Free entry. The Peterborough-based hospice is one of the charities to benefit from this year’s family friendly Stamford Santa Fun Run held on Sunday December 8 at Burghley Park in Stamford. BLOOD CANCER CHARITY LOOKING FOR SUPPORT A new community group to be set up in Peterborough by charity Bloodwise will offer a variety of volunteering opportunities to help raise funds and awareness for blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Bloodwise Community Groups are a network of volunteers who are passionate about beating blood cancer by raising funds and increasing awareness across their local communities. The groups are a central part of the charity’s work to fund research and provide support for all those affected by the disease. By organising collections, fundraising activities and events whilst also receiving donations on the charity’s behalf, Community Groups make a real impact by engaging people at a local level. They’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in getting involved and representing Bloodwise locally to change the future of those affected by the disease. CRAFTS AT NENE PARK On the run up to Christmas there are an exciting number of events being held at Nene Park to get you feeling festive! MIDWINTER KIDS’ FESTIVAL COMES TO ARENA Here’s one to look forward to next year to get the kids out over winter. On Saturday February 8 and Sunday February 9 bored children and frustrated parents will ďŹ nally have an answer to their midwinter prayers as The Peterborough Kids’ Fest hits The East of England Arena in Peterborough. Organised by Hot Pink Events, the festival will feature attractions aimed at children from 1 - 14 years of age, with a dedicated under-5s area, an adult creche, quiet areas for breastfeeding mothers and special provisions for those with additional needs including SEN. Attractions include obstacle courses, circus workshops, arts & crafts, sports, STEM events, storytelling and face painting, as well as bubble football, go-karting, a soft play area, and dance and sports. CHARITY BALL A charity ball is being held this month to raise money for the charity CALM, The Campaign Against Living Miserably. They’re leading a movement against suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. It’s coming up on Saturday November 23 at the Holiday Inn Peterborough, the event is called CALMival; a carnival inspired night with circus entertainment, music and a gala dinner. DINOS TO ROAR AT CATHEDRAL This one is a little way off but is deďŹ nitely one to get excited about in 2020 as Peterborough Cathedral is to display the Natural History Museum’s touring exhibition, T. rex: The Killer Question. The display will be made up of 14 dinosaurs, nine of which are animatronic models. Amongst the collection is a moving, threequarter size T. rex, as well as life-size T. rex skeleton and models of other dinosaurs. This exciting exhibition will be on show from July 20 to August 31 and tickets will go on sale in the new year. Christmas in The city centre is about to get that festive feel and with the return of a real Christmas tree to Cathedral Square and a big new festive market it looks set to be a cracker! We can’t wait for the big light switch-on event on Friday November 15 when the winter nights will get a real lift with some stunning illuminations throughout the city centre. The family entertainment on stage will be hosted by BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Breakfast Show presenter Kev Lawrence and producer Andy Lake. The fun starts at 3pm and lasts until 8pm, with the lights being switched on at 7pm. As the event coincides with Children In Need night, Pudsey Bear will also be making a special appearance. Big crowds are expected once again with many people pleased to see the return of a real 40 foot spruce lighting up for the first time since 2014!

Jack Allen, from the New Theatre in Peterborough, which is supporting the tree, said: "We are delighted to have helped get a real tree back into the heart of the city. The switch-on will be the first opportunity to see it all lit up, which will be a spectacular sight and sure to get everyone into the festive spirit!" The on stage entertainment features multi-award winning Cambridge band 4th Labyrinth, the Urban Dance Academy, Peterborough Cathedral Choir led by Tansy Castledine, Peterborough Voices led by Will Prideaux, Lucy's Pop Choir and panto stars from the Cresset, Key and New Theatres will put on a show. This year’s switch-on is being supported by Vodafone, whose Gigafast Broadband is
bringing some of the faster broadband speeds in the UK, straight to homes and businesses across Peterborough. Councillor Steve Allen, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for recreation, said: “This year’s event includes entertainment for all the family which I hope will encourage lots of young people into the city centre. As well as enjoying the big switchon, you can take the chance to do some Christmas shopping and enjoy the many restaurants that Peterborough has to offer. “Working in partnership with Vodafone means we are able to offer an event packed with fantastic entertainment and plenty of festive sparkle.” Father Christmas, city Mayor Councillor Gul Nawaz and Peterborough City Council Leader Councillor John Holdich will be switching on the lights which will be followed by a burst of fireworks to get Christmas in the city off to a great start. There’s another fantastic addition to the
the City festivities this year with a large new Christmas Market on the Cathedral Green the day of the lights switch-on and running right through until December 28. The market will see dozens of chalet style stalls also open up along Bridge Street and Long Causeway on November 17 and Cathedral Square on November 26. As part of the event, the Guildhall will be turned into a cool Ice Bar, while youngsters can enjoy a trip to Santa’s Grotto, carousel rides and other fun and games. The market will be open daily from 10am until late and will include more than 100 stalls selling festive food, drinks and goods from all over the world. Read more on Page 14 of this issue. They’ve added new stalls this year packed with a huge range of unique gifts and handmade crafts all available in the Cathedral Nave and Transepts on the evening of Friday November 15, to coincide with the city’s Christmas Lights switch-on, and during the day on Saturday November 16. There will be so much to choose from including vegan soaps, hand-painted silk scarves, leather-goods, ceramics, artworks, bamboo socks, jewellery and much more. Refreshments will also be on sale. A donation of £2 per adult is invited on entry and the proceeds will go towards the running of Peterborough Cathedral. Get set for a Festive Fiesta Christmas arrives in Queensgate Shopping Centre on Saturday November 16 with the return of their amazing Festive Fiesta. The centre literally comes to life with Christmas characters… and this year it’s bigger, better and even more Christmassy than ever! Everyone loved last year’s Festive Fiesta which got Christmas underway in stunning style so due to popular demand once again the shopping centre will erupt with music, dance, entertainment, prizes and lots of surprises – all wrapped together to create the most magical experience. Last year saw dancing bellboys, nutcracker ballerinas, musical drummers, plus mischievous elves, the hilarious Ugly Sisters and Rudolph’s reindeer buddies – this year promises more of the same plus extras for good measure. “Everywhere you turn there will be a glorious celebration of Christmas,” said Rebecca Keefe, Marketing Manager at Queensgate. “This is a full Christmas takeover, like never before. There’s a brand new exciting attraction at Nene Valley Railway this winter and it’s set to light up the track. A new fantastic 60 minute Winter Light Spectacular is coming to the steam railway on selected dates in December and January featuring a decorated train and amazing displays along the route. For years the Santa Specials at Nene Valley Railway have been a festive staple, but this year you’re spoilt for choice… or maybe you’ll just try both! This year it’s #santaorlights as you decide. The Santa Steam experiences run from November 23 – December 24. They include entertainment on the platform, a visit to Santa’s Grotto for a gift, food on the steam train and Santa will
visit each carriage. At the Light Spectacular in December you’ll gather on the platform at Wansford for the big reveal then once on board the heated carriages, head to your allocated seats, sit back and enjoy a magical train ride, viewing the beautiful light displays between Wansford and Overton Station while a musical accompaniment adds to the treat. The turntable café open will be open until the train’s departure, offering a selection of hot and hearty snacks. Christmas Magic at Peterborough Cathedral There’s so much happening at Peterborough Cathedral this Christmas but to really get you in the festive spirit you can’t beat the Christmas Magic concert – guaranteed to give you that warm and fuzzy festive feel! The concert on Saturday December 14 is one of the highlights and is now in its ninth year. With a 2.30pm matinee for the whole family to enjoy as well as an evening performance at 7.30pm, there’s something for everyone young and old. PANTO TIME – OH YES IT IS! It’s time… to boo, hiss, laugh, cheer and scream “It’s behind you!” with all your might. Panto season is here and this year we have three crackers to enjoy. It’s everyone’s excuse to be a big kid at Christmas and for families to have a great night out where they can all let loose with a bit of audience participation. This is our ESP guide to the Peterborough pantos… Oh yes it is!
Beauty and the Beast We’ve been enjoying the Key Theatre panto for years, ESP is 20 after all, but most of the team can remember this being a Christmas staple long before we even started the mag! It’s the longest running pantomime in the city and has always had a really intimate friendly feel. With a smaller auditorium you’re in the thick of the action and younger kids feel really involved. This year Vivacity’s bringing us the classic French fairytale, Beauty and the Beast which is once again ably directed by Simon Egerton. As we’ve come to expect it’ll be packed with parody songs, city references to make us locals laugh and lots of audience participation. You may well know the tale from Disney, or the film with Emma Watson, but this version puts a hilarious, local twist on this traditional tale, setting the action in the provincial town of ‘Pierreborough’, (home of the ‘Macrongate Shopping Centre’) with set, costumes and actors showing off lederhosen, alpenhorns and plenty of yodelling. Beautiful Belle doesn’t really like dressing like ‘the other girls’ and has a quirky look of her own. She meets The Beast (a formerly charming ‘chevalier’) and becomes swept up in an adventure to undo the curse on him by the wicked Wolf Queen and her Wolf Pack. What make this panto different is that all the music is performed on stage by the
actors themselves and if you’ve been along in recent years you’ll recognise some familiar faces who are returning to entertain us once again. In the starring role of Belle, Rebecca Levy will be wowing audiences for the third year running, having previously played the title role in Peter Pan (2018) and Aurora in Sleeping Beauty (2017). There’s no denying one of the best parts in any panto is the dame and joining the cast this year is TJ Holmes as Madame Obnobs. TJ is an experienced actormusician and musical theatre performer who’ll be joining the company straight from touring in the hilarious hit show One Man, Two Guv’nors. Beauty and the Beast is a traditional panto featuring trained actor-musicians, all the music is live and much of it is original too. It's all homegrown with Simon having written directed and composed it himself. Simon told us: “I am thrilled to be back working with the creative team at the Key Theatre again and with such a fantastic cast and crew. Our shows combine the best traditional family panto and musical experience you can find, not just in Peterborough. We aim to provide all the glitz, glamour, fun and ‘he’s behind you’s’ that you might expect but always find room to make things a little different. How have we managed that this year? Cinderella This year’s show at the Cresset in Bretton is an absolute panto classic. Cinderella has everything you need with a great story, a heroine to root for and plenty of magic. The Cresset Theatre’s teamed up with Premier Pantomimes once again and has been presenting us with some great festive fun over the years which we’ve all loved. This year should be no exception with the return of the far too handsome Mitch Hewer as Prince Charming and former EastEnders star Ricky Groves serving up the laughs as Buttons. The Cresset panto is loud and lively and usually makes the most of the larger auditorium with the characters making a run for it through the crowd and making the kids scream with excitement. Ricky Groves is a popular panto veteran and audience favourite, having appeared in previous productions of Dick Whittington (2012) and Beauty and The Beast (2013). He told ESP – “I’m loving it – everyone knows each other and it’s a great company to work for. I’ve been playing the baddie in a few pantomimes but I do like the comedic role so it’ll be nice to come back to that “I think this is my 12th panto so I must have learned something in that time or I wouldn’t be here – but it’ll be great to get that audience reaction again and see if we can make some people smile this Christmas!” In the role of Prince Charming is Mitch Hewer, who regular panto-goers will recognise from previous pantos at The Cresset, including Aladdin in 2014, Snow White in 2017 and as the dashing title character in last year’s production of Robin Hood. Mitch got his big break on Channel 4’s Skins, has appeared in Casualty and in
recent years Mitch has appeared on stage in Never Forget, the musical based on the songs of Take That and on screen alongside Selena Gomez in the movie Behaving Badly. Mitch told ESP – “I can’t imagine Christmas without panto – and that’s coming from someone who’d never even seen one before appearing in one! I think these days with the internet kids often lack using their imagination and panto is just good old fashioned story telling which kids don’t get when they’re stuck on social media. “I think one of the favourite parts for me is having fun back stage trying to put each other off! I can’t wait.” Joining them will be the hugely talented Lily Shires as
the star of the show, Cinderella, and this year we see two favourites return in quite different roles. Lawrence Stubbings is usually cast as a brilliant baddie while Zach Vanderfelt has been the hugely popular dame but this year they’re teaming up as the Ugly Sisters and they’re promising over the top make-up and plenty of reasons to boo them both! Cinderella is produced by Premier Pantomimes, who have been producing top quality pantomime productions at The Cresset since 2008. Writers and Directors John Newman and Stuart Morrison have been the creative force behind Cresset pantomimes for over ten years

The Wizard of Oz There’s a new kid on the panto block this year, or should that be the yellow brick road? There’ll be no place like Peterborough this Christmas as the New Theatre is up and running and adds an entirely different style of show to the city’s panto menu with the Wizard of Oz. With the largest auditorium and with Strictly Come Dancing’s Katya Jones leading this year’s pantomime spectacular this is a much larger affair as we’re whisked off from Kansas to Oz in a large scale production. Katya may think she’s the star of the show as Glinda the good witch – but she’ll be competing with a real life, and far too cute, Toto! The former Strictly winner who’s been paired with BBC sports presenter Mike Bushell in the latest series will be bringing some Strictly glitz to her panto debut and is bound to be a draw for fans of the dance show as well as those who love a good festive night out. We’re not sure if we’ll see any Gangnam Style Salsa as she did with Ed Balls but we bet she’ll bring plenty of sparkle! Katya says: "The Wizard of Oz will be a first for me and the Prime Pantomime production so I think we’re a little over
excited! I’ll be swapping my dancing shoes for a pair of wings as Glinda and I can’t wait to bring some sparkle to Peterborough New Theatre. “Panto is a wonderful experience for the whole family. So if you love celebrating winter festivities as much as I do, then I will be seeing you there!” Although The Wizard of Oz will be a much larger show it’s still created specifically for a local audience packed with audience participation, dazzling costumes and plenty of laughter, guaranteed to have you shouting, clapping, and singing along to a host of charttopping hits. Runners were great at the Eastern So, the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon was cancelled after half an hour delay because of a report of a man acting suspiciously near one of the roads on the route. Police launched a major firearms response to the situation, which in the end turned out to be a false alarm after a witness, acting in good faith, misinterpreted what was was seen. This meant that more than 3,000 runners (some who’d travelled from as far away as Northern Ireland) had to go home after months of preparation for their big day. What followed was a response from runners that would have been so different five or ten years ago. We live in a world where the threat of terrorism is real and we’re now wired up to be more vigilant and report suspicious behaviour. We’re also now more wired up to be better accepting of situations like that Sunday where we can’t leave anything to chance and risk our safety. That’s why race organisers the city council were praised by the runners for making the right decision. It was a situation based on information the council were presented with by police at the time that left them with no choice. Who knows, perhaps pre-Boston or even pre-9/11, organisers would be making a different call but the reality is it’s always better to be safe than sorry. So, well done to the runners for understanding. Well done to the witness for calling in what he or she saw to police and well done to the council for managing a difficult situation with only one thing in mind – the safety of their residents and visitors to our city.

Thank you for introducing me to the best cappuccino outside of Naples. Thank you for being the only reason I visited Central Park in adulthood. Thank you for being so welcoming. Thank you for not ripping people off. Thank you for trying to build a sense of community. Thank you for helping to keep the park sustainable. But most of all thank you Vince and Fil for your continued dedication and determination through challenging times to stay open for 28 years. The Buttercross owners have decided to call it a day and not attempt to go for the full 30 years – good for them. They were made an offer they couldn’t refuse and now it’s time to enjoy the simple things in life that people not in business take for granted. Those that know Vince and Fil will acknowledge how hard they’ve worked and the sacrifices to health and personal finances they’ve both made for their business over the years. I was in my late teens when they opened the Buttercross and we should all be thankful they did. I remember the park not having the best reputation at the time and even had my bike stolen there one Saturday afternoon. It was in my opinion a brave move to start a business there and that’s down to the belief Vince and Fil had in the potential
of the park. Central Park has flourished around the Buttercross much like a football team gains confidence around its key player. I’ve introduced the park as a recreational option to dozens of people over the years and it’s all because of the Buttercross. The cafe plays an important part in bringing together our city’s rich tapestry of diverse communities. It might be the end of an era for the Buttercross but with a new name and new owners it’s time to write a chapter for the next 30 years that we can all be equally thankful for.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I actually look forward to visiting the New Theatre Peterborough because the team there are so nice! It dawned on me after my third visit what a bunch of lovely people they are. This is probably mainly due to being an entirely new team but also because the majority of the crew are from theatre backgrounds. But this is the part where I contradict myself. I’ve been to the biggest theatres to see the biggest shows in London and New York City but all the staff I’ve encountered are miserable and have the personality of a breeze block. Maybe we know a thing or two about passion and customer service in Peterborough or maybe the team are just so damn excited about the calibre of entertainment they’ve brought to our city! My most recent visit was to watch Avenue Q. It was adult funny (not for kids) and had some of society’s most challenging messages cleverly woven into it. The cast were brilliant and I was even more impressed when I was told they all had to learn their faultless American accents. The quality line-up of shows continues this November where there’s something for everyone. But for me it’s all about the beginning and the end of the month. November starts with The Rat Pack – Swingin’ at the Sands! – and ends with Fame. Need I say more?

START YOUR FUTURE AT AN OPEN DAY It’s now the time of year when students and parents are looking at different universities by attending Open Days. Studying the other side of the UK is not for everyone and you may be surprised about how lucky we are to have University Centre Peterborough (UCP) on our doorstep. They are many financial benefits for studying locally, but UCP have a fantastic reputation for creating highly skilled and successful graduates. Why should I come to an Open Day? Choosing where to study is a big decision and requires researching before deciding where to go. Open Days provide the perfect opportunity to get a feel for what university life will be like as you get to meet and speak to both the academic staff and students. You will get a better idea of what it is like by visiting the campus in person rather than just looking at a website or watching a video so it’s worth making the effort. Can I find out about student finances? Yes, during the Open Day there’ll be information talks about a variety of topics including student finances and the UCAS application process. The Student Support and Admissions teams will be on hand to speak to you individually about any queries you may have so you get all of the information you need on the day. How is UCP different to other universities? As UCP is smaller than other institutions it offers many advantages that other universities can’t offer due to its size. Students really benefit from small class sizes and learning from academic staff who can spend more time with students so they get
the most out of their degree. They even have group and 1:1 tutorials so students get feedback and are prepared throughout at all times. The majority of their courses can also be studied as two full days a week, which can only be done as it’s easier to timetable courses this efficiently. Is two full days a week less study?
The majority of degrees at UCP are full honours degrees that take three years to complete, although there are some courses such as foundation degrees which last two years or HNC and HND qualifications and education courses which are one or two years.
No, it’s the same amount of study, but instead of spreading the course for a few hours each day over 4 to 5 days in a week, they group these lectures into full days. This makes it easier for students to plan independent study plus it’s more convenient for travelling with some students commuting to the city. It also helps students get work placements during their studies which will ultimately improve their employability after they graduate.
When do I need to apply by?
What type of students study at UCP?
There are two Open Days to choose from before the end of the year. If you prefer to visit on a weekend then go along on Saturday November 9 from 10am to 1pm or if an evening is more convenient then the Open Day on Thursday December 5 from 5.30pm to 8pm is best for you.
There’s a really diverse range of students at UCP which makes it an exciting community. Not everyone is from the local area as students come from all over the UK when they discover what makes UCP so different. There’s a wide mix of ages with a growing number of students starting at UCP straight from sixth form and college – but mature students (those over 21 years of age) can feel right at home as a third of students are older when they start their studies.
The first deadline for applications for courses starting next year is January 15, 2020 although you can apply at any time before then as it means you can secure your place and start the process of sorting out your student finances a lot earlier. If you don’t apply by this date, there’s still plenty of time left to apply but don’t leave it too late. When are the next Open Days?
How can I register for an Open Day? It’s quick and easy to register your attendance in advance by visiting www.ucp.ac.uk/openday.
Are there degrees to start in January?
What if I can’t make an Open Day?
Yes, not all courses have to be started in September. If you want to study Business Management or Computing and Information Systems, then these courses can be started in January 2020. There’s still plenty of time to apply for these courses as you don’t start studying until the end of January. This is a really popular option for mature students wanting to improve themselves as a New Year’s resolution.

He’s photographed good friends, reunited old friends and now he’s created a new book full of man’s best friend. Get ready to add Chris’ Porsz’s latest book – Barking! – to your Christmas wish list.
Peterborough paramedic and street photographer Chris Porsz is back with a whole new take on his candid photography and our four legged friends just love the lens. Chris has spent years capturing characters and places in his own unique style and here at ESP we’ve always celebrated his talent. He’s saved lives in his ‘day job’ as paramedic but raised plenty of smiles with what’s become a fantastic record of social history for the city and beyond. Following the success of his previous photo books New England (2015) which focused on the changing face of Peterborough, Reunions (2016) which brought some of his previous subjects back together in the mock ups of his original images, he then headed out to pastures new with Streets of Europe (2017) and then around the UK with Streets of Britain (2018). His latest book Barking! has been snapped in his spontaneous style so we asked Chris just how difficult it was to capture a good image? “I try to adopt the maxim of one of my photography heroes Robert Capa – ‘If your photographs are not good enough then you are not close enough’. So I walk and stalk for miles, get down to their level with a wide angle lens on a fast shutter speed, fire away and hope. Sometimes I have got too close to snarling dogs, unhappy owners or to a Yorkie that cocked its leg over me and my camera! “My quest would often involve round trips of

hundreds of miles but I returned with not even a sausage dog. “Barking was inspired by one surreal mandog image taken by the great American photographer Elliot Erwitt in New York. It depicted a bulldog sat on its owner’s knee and so I started looking for more funny dogs. As the great man said – ‘I don’t know of any other animals closer to us in qualities of heart, sentiment and loyalty’. I couldn’t agree more and the project has made me realise how devoted some owners are about their dogs and hence the title Barking.” Any interesting stories to tell behind the images? “I have many but my boss suggested I check out Barking in London. It bugged me so I sat for hours on Barking station hoping to capture a dog in front of the ‘Welcome to Barking’ sign. Obviously looking suspicious I was approached by security but they were happy when I said I was a train spotter. “I waited for hours outside ‘The Spotted Dog’ for a dalmatian and outside 'The Barking Dog' for a barking dog but there were just no dogs in Barking! Well it should be renamed ‘Not really Barking’ as I went back three times to finally achieve the image with Colin the train spotter and best friend Rosie.” Do you have a favourite? “I have many such as the three dogs copulating on Primrose Hill or a dog peeing on a funny sign but the piece de resistance has to be the front cover. If I came away from New York with just that one image it would have been worth it. A picture that I was not going to take as it was boring with a dog just catching a ball. ANNA’S HOPE FUN RUN We’re giving a big cheer to all the runners who braved the rain and completed the 5k Anna’s Hope Fun Run in Peterborough and raised thousands for local charities – they may have looked bedraggled but they were heroes every one! ESP reporter Mikey Clarke was among them and told us – “It was great to see so many people taking part in the Anna’s Hope Fun Run. The weather wasn’t particularly great, but I soon forgot about the rain once I was among the energetic crowd. The thing I love about the fun run is that you get all ages and athletic abilities taking part – it’s something that most people can be part of. You even had many in fancy-dress. “After my 40-minute challenge (yes, went at a gentle pace), I returned to see that the half marathon had been cancelled. Although I know this must have been frustrating, I completely understand the decision to call it off. Safety should always come first. I just hope people continue to donate to all those worthy charity causes. People may not have been able to run those 13+ miles on the day, but many would have accumulated hundreds of grueling miles whilst training. See you all in 2020.” If you were one of the thousands of runners at the Perkins Great Eastern Run who were disappointed on the day, we salute your dedication in training and your patience and understanding on the day. Seeing the race cancelled due to a police incident was a huge disappointment for all concerned after everyone’s hard work but safety has to be the priority. It’s good to hear from the organisers that there’s been such positive feedback to a tough decision. Hopefully you will all come back determined in 2020. A new covers album released on November 1 in aid of BBC Children in Need features some unusual singers including two Dr Who stars, Hollywood actors and soap stars – but not celebs known for their vocal talents. Sarah Tempest finds out how ESP cover star Jodie Whittaker attempts to be the new Chris Martin…

and laughing when you are practicing and giving you really supportive compliments like ‘shut up, it sounds like a dying cat’ and I’ve picked myself up, dusted my knees off and come to Abbey Road and I’m going to nail it! So it’s nerve racking, humiliating and exciting.” And nail it she has, with the single racing up the charts and raising thousands of pounds for BBC Children in Need. Now if only she had a TARDIS to keep all the awards that are coming her way. Wait… The album, Children in Need: Got It Covered, is available from November 1, and all profits will go to BBC Children in Need, with a minimum of £1.50 per album. he may have been cast as the 13th Doctor in BBC’s Doctor Who, but life is anything other than unlucky for Jodie Whittaker, who’s Sarah Tempest proved a huge success and won over many die hard ‘Whovians’ who insisted the Doctor could only be male. And now she’s added another ‘dimension’ to her notable talents by recording the official 2019 Children in Need single. Having graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with the top prize of Acting Gold Medal, Jodie was soon gaining a reputation as a talent to look out for. But it was her breakthrough role in 2013’s television drama Broadchurch that really made Jodie’s name and earned her plaudits galore for her performance as grieving mother Beth Latimer. The series hooked the nation and was the topic of water cooler catch ups countrywide – and Jodie’s portrayal ripped at heartstrings everywhere. Taking on the role of the first female Doctor (she swiftly shut down those critical of her casting with: “Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.”) Jodie is never one to shy away from a challenge, and it could be argued that taking on Coldplay’s song Yellow for Children in Need is one of her biggest yet. “So I chose this song because I have stalked Coldplay since they first appeared on any stage,” she says. “I went to my first Coldplay gig in New Zealand when I was eighteen and they were on in the afternoon and it was like 4 o’clock in the afternoon at a festival so Parachutes had only just come out. There was about one hundred people watching and waiting for the headliners and I was crying and singing along to every single track. “So I think I have sufficiently stalked them enough to steal their song, and ruin it. I love them and they have sound tracked my entire adult life and I think it is the most beautiful song that has stood the test of time. Because now, I’m really showing my age, it’s almost 20 years old this song.” But despite her considerable vocal talents (who knew?!) Jodie hasn’t found it easy swapping acting for singing. “It’s very daunting, it’s quite humbling. I started this process thinking I was a really brilliant singer. I‘ve gone through peaks and troughs of having that enlightened moment when you realise that you are not Adele. That was a sad day. “Then picking yourself off the floor when all your friends at work are pointing

Juggy is our New Voice Time to meet Juggy, you’ll be hearing (and seeing a lot of more of him) very soon.
Juggy (Jagvir Sohal) was the winner of the BBC New Voices talent search which ESP editor Sharon McAllister helped to judge. He will be presenting some shows on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire next year but will also be featuring in ESP and making appearances on Salaam Radio in Peterborough. The audition day saw over 70 entrants from all walks of life queue up eagerly at the Key Theatre, keen to tell an engaging story in just 1 minute for the chance to impress and get a foot in the door at the BBC. David Harvey, Editor at BBC Radio Cambridgeshire told ESP – “The size of the turn out and the standard of entries was amazing. I really didn’t envy the judges picking a winner. “They heard tales of heroics; personal anecdotes of triumph 30 www.espmag.co.uk
and disaster; stories about family and friends and well observed monologues about the frustrations of daily life. Telling those tales against the clock in a calm, measured, orderly manner was a really tough challenge. “I’m delighted for the overall winner, Juggy, who is clearly an exciting new talent and he’ll be visiting the station in the next few weeks to talk about hosting radio shows on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire in the New Year.” The pressure was certainly on as BBC breakfast show presenter Kev Lawrence introduced each person and gave them the count down – they then had 60 seconds to impress and the judges had just those few moments to see who was engaging, had a good voice for radio and that certain something special. It was a tough choice for judges Sue Marchant, presenter at BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Xidus Pain,
award winning rap artist and musician, ESP editor Sharon McAllister and Imtiaz Ali, sports host at Salaam Radio. In the end after much delibertaion it was 29 year-old Juggy from Bedford who works for a publishing company who won. He now gets some great opportunities to further a career in the media and he’ll get the chance to write some features in ESP early next year along with his BBC radio shows. Juggy has tried his hand at community radio but it is his dream to work for the BBC so he jumped at the chance to audition for New Voices. On the day his 60 seconds in the spotlight appealed to all four judges and his lively personality proved a winner. “For my minute long story, I knew I wanted it to be funny and catch the panels attention quickly,” explained Juggy, “so I was recounting to my friend about the stuff that happened to me recently and we both agreed on two stories, on the day I decided to go with the inappropriate twerking one.” In early October he got the call live on air from Kev Lawrence to say he’d won and couldn’t believe it.

“When I got the call to say I won, I genuinely was shocked, you never think it’s going to be you, especially with all the talent that was there. Once the shock died down I was just really excited and relieved as my journey into radio and presenting has been a long difficult one so was pleased that I had achieved some sort of accolade. “I am looking forward to seeing what kind of doors open from this amazing opportunity and to collaborate on developing some diverse content and stepping even further into this creative world I have been pursuing.” ESP will be introducing you to Juggy early next year when he’ll be writing a series of articles for the magazine. He was one of 11 fantastic finalists and we’re pleased to hear that they, along with another 35 who auditioned will be getting to tour the Radio Cambridgehsire office and may well be guests for future programmes. There were so many great people who stepped up to the mic that day that we know there are plenty more voices out there that should be heard.

Peterborough’s first Film Festival heads to the city this November. ESP’s Mikey Clare finds out more… ESP Magazine started over 20 years ago to celebrate and highlight the great things happening in Peterborough and beyond. Hopefully whilst flicking through these pages you’ll agree that there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the city throughout Mikey Clarke November. For my fellow film buffs out there, I’m excited to announce that a brand-new film festival is coming to Peterborough this month (November 8 - 17). The Gateway Film Festival aims to celebrate local history, community as well as being Peterborough's gateway to film from the past and around the world. It takes place across five core days and encompasses a range of genres, venues and events, including artists, moving image, archive, musicals and world cinema to name just a few. The expansive programme offers the chance for people to see something new and visit some of the interesting venues across the city and its surrounding areas. We spoke to the Festival Director, Emily Steele, who told ESP – "The Gateway Film Festival offers Peterborough a wide variety of alternative cinema that is usually not available for people living here. Through the festival we will invite you to explore film beyond the modern Hollywood blockbuster." Emily was born in Peterborough and has had a passion for film all her life. “I truly began to love film when I began discovering old Hollywood films,” she explained. “I would spend my Saturday job money in the sale section of HMV buying copies of films such as Sunset Boulevard, Breakfast at Tiffanys and Casablanca. I went on to study filmmaking at Manchester School of Art.” Emily is known locally for curating short film nights of movies by female filmmakers under the name Cine-Sister (which still runs in Peterborough now), film screenings, filmmaking workshops and she works as a freelance filmmaker. Why did Emily want to bring Gateway to Peterborough? “Gateway Film Festival started as the idea I applied with to the Peterborough Presents Emerge Young Producer Programme. I had been doing short film nights for about a year and wanted to do something more ambitious.” Emily continued, “I hope that people will try something new to them, explore films from different cultures, fantastic older films as well as new cinematic experiences.”

GATEWAY FILM FESTIVAL
The festival opens with Past/Present Peterborough: Short Film Showcase with a Q&A at the John Clare Theatre on November 13. It brings together short films from local film makers and explores the city on film. During the festival, highlights include an Artist Moving Image Screening on November 9 with a Q&A from artist Rosanna Greaves from Babylon Arts. There’ll be the all-time classic Metropolis on November 14 at the Peterborough Arts Cinema, and an immersive screening of Bollywood hit Dil Dhadakne Do at The Undercroft can be seen in Hampton on November 15. This screening will be accompanied by a live dance performance from local dance group, Bollysouls, and indian food will be included. It’s set to be a great night of film, food, music and dance. There will also be a take-over of St John’s Church in Peterborough on November 16 at 2pm, with a screening of The Adventures of Prince Achmed and a shadow puppet making activity suitable for families. This 1926 German animated fairytale is considered to be the oldest surviving animated feature film by the foremost pioneer of silhouette animation, Lotte Reiniger. Here local poets Hana Sayeed, Ross Sutherland, Pete Cox and Charley Genever will be performing live poetry to three surrealist short silent films in this not to be missed conclusion of the festival. Vitamins – as easy as A, B, C ? The UK’s supplement market is booming as individuals look for a more natural approach to supporting their health and vitality. However, you might not always know if they’re actually doing you any good or perhaps you’ve been taking them for too long and they’re no longer working as well, or worse, disrupting the fine balance of nutrients in your body. The word ‘supplement’ means something added to enhance. So, that said you need to look first at your diet to check what you’re putting in and whether that food is getting absorbed well enough to deliver those nutrients to your cells. If there’s inflammation, indigestion, high stress levels, low pancreatic enzymes, bile insufficiency or unfavourable bacteria in your gut (often following medical drugs, unhealthy diets etc), you may not absorb those key nutrients and therefore won’t be getting the most from your food. If you don’t chew your food well enough that won’t be helping either. I am still amazed how much solid food pieces I see coming out during a colonic session with clients. It should be waste matter not whole food pieces coming through! If the type of food you eat leaves a gluey residue throughout your digestive tract, thereby sticking around causing mucous, inflammation, excess gas, unfavourable bacteria and more – this will not be an ideal environment for absorbing nutrients. Think of refined carbohydrates, sugars, excess animal protein, lack of fibre etc – very gluey or inflammatory foods. With this in mind, the best vitamin/mineral or other supplement will be difficult to break down and be absorbed unless it is helping initially to remove wastes, reduce inflammation and change the environment ready for supplements. So, if you take them to give yourself a boost then think about clearing out, mopping up and improving the internal environment first. However, there are times that vitamin/mineral support is often suggested (and needed) which are: • The elderly •
The very young – picky eaters in particular

11 year-old’s upwards who are let loose at the senior school canteen opting for the pizza, bacon rolls etc, their need for nutrients such as Iron, Zinc, healthy proteins and fats are much greater for growth at that time and so they may show up with problems such as anaemia

When we’re run down or stressed out

I do recommend supplements from time to time but they’re generally more targeted such as for hormone balancing, gut healing, supporting digestion and eliminations. I’m still struck by the number of supplements people will take and over a long period of time without any changes. Some have been taking the same supplement for years. You should really review this, for instance taking just a fish oil (omega 3) for months/years needs looking at as the delicate balance on the cell membrane can be disrupted. Or taking trace minerals such as Iron or Zinc in isolation can affect other competitive minerals. Vitamin D deficiencies, once corrected need to have a balance of all other fat soluble vitamins such as A, E and K – continuing to take Vitamin D can upset this balance too. It all needs tweaking from time to time.
If you take a supplement (s), then ask yourself if they’re still doing what you originally took them for. Maybe the initial support’s now waned and they’re no longer needed. If your diet’s lacking in nutrients or creating mucous, inflammation, constipation, lack of flow and toxicity then this is the elephant in the room that needs addressing before you really can reap the benefits. Focusing on detoxification, cleansing and elimination is key for the body to be able to be free of cellular and digestive waste encumbrances to be able to flow better and absorb nutrients.

Think of the money saved when the supplements you’ve been taking may no longer be required, that money could be better spent on a good juicer and/or blender to deliver concentrated nutrients direct from Mother Nature herself from colourful fruits and veggies. Always review and renew what you’ve been taking or maybe it’s time to ditch them altogether if you have set up a better environment in the body for you to extract the best from a wide range of whole foods. Peterborough Stages First Poetry Festival
The word on the street is that Syntax is going to see poets performing loud and proud in all sorts of different places in Peterborough this month as the city’s first poetry festival gets underway.

yntax, Peterborough’s festival of poetry and spoken word runs from November 1 – 30 and stems from the foundations of a great poetry and spoken word scene. A core team of around 8 poets and then another 30 poets and producers have helped to organise it including former Peterborough Poet Laureate, Charley Genever.

“Syntax feels like the natural next step for us,” Charley told ESP. “Peterborough has a brilliant community of poets living and working here. What's special about our city is that it's very grass roots; a lot of what we do is for and with the people of this city, and we want to celebrate that. We hope to reach new people, take poetry to unusual places, and allow people to experience words in new ways, and maybe even fall in love with it.”

The festival will see a programme of fantastic events including our city’s best talent through to international best sellers like Andrew McMillan and Mark Grist. There are events suitable for families, budding writers, word lovers, and those who enjoy a good night out. There’ll be surreal silent films with live poetry, street art and poetry battles and workshops translating poetry into different languages. Spoken word now regularly crops up in various TV adverts such as the Nationwide ads, but for Charley it’s been a long held passion she’s hoping others will embrace during the Syntax festival. “I've always been obsessed with words and how they make us feel,” says Charley. “I absolutely love it when I hear a poet reading, and they've come up with such vivid and powerful imagery, that it creates this like guttural reaction. “Poetry also gives us an opportunity to be honest in an unapologetic way, so I get really excited when I see a performance or read a piece of work which explores a vulnerable topic, and invites us in to experience that vulnerability with them. It's beautiful and empowering.” You may not be aware but Peterborough has a thriving spoken word scene and Charley believes it’s growing. “I think having formidable people like Mark Grist, Keely Mills, Pete Cox, and Ross Sutherland (to name a few) all living and working here has had a big impact on the scene, and certainly inspired me to have a go at it myself. It's like a big family – we all support each other and keep each other up. “What's great about spoken word is that it brings poetry to life, and kind of breaks the rules of what we consider to be a genre. Sometimes it's comedy. Sometimes it's political. Sometimes it's theatre or cabaret or storytelling. Sometimes it has music. Sometimes it has movement. Sometimes it's a person behind a mic in a pub sharing their truth. It is malleable and powerful and can be experienced virtually anywhere, and doesn't require any training or equipment to have a go yourself.” This determination to break down misconceptions and make poetry accessible to all will see 13 poetry residencies throughout November. Three poets will be ‘in residence’ throughout the month, meeting and working with visitors to Peterborough City Market, the Allama Iqbal Centre and Nene Park. There will also be 10 one day or ‘flash’ residencies in places like friendship
groups, chicken shops and launderettes. The aim of the residencies is to take poetry and poets to people and unusual spaces by taking it out of books and theatres – so, you might just see poetry performed whilst you buy your veg! Charley told us there’s lots on offer for everyone – “There are so many great events lined up, and we've tried to cater for different kinds of people. Whether that's families in need of entertainment for the children, mates in need of a good night out, or secret aspiring poets in need of some guidance and a friendly crowd to try this poetry thing out. “We'd absolutely love to see you during the festival, and would love it even more if you shared what you think about it. This is the first time we've come together to put something this big on, so hearing what you think will really help!” Syntax is also holding a competition for the city’s next Poet Laureate which is now over 20 years old. It’s a wonderful role for a poet aged 18+ to have. The Health and Care Sector Work Academy has a course starting near you!
T
he Health and Care Sector Work Academy is a national pilot project funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, offering a free qualification to those 18+ and claiming some form of benefit. By undertaking one of their 15 week courses, you can gain a recognised, City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care and mentoring support for up to four months after the course has finished. All childcare, adult care and transport costs are covered, giving you peace of mind. It’s a great chance to get into this sector and the Academy is also able to support with maths and English and employability
including CV workshops, help with job searches and applications and the opportunity to meet with local employers to give you a real life idea of working in the sector and available vacancies, with the courses running in an area near you. So far this autumn, they’ve attended lots of events to spread the word about upcoming courses and recruit keen learners. The team particularly enjoyed their visit to Feel the Force Day at the East of England Showground, which is the world’s biggest (and only) TV and
film convention designed for people with disabilities, sensory impairments or other additional needs. They had lots of interest in their courses, including one that you wouldn’t expect (pictured), though unfortunately they don’t have any plans to run a course on the planet Kashyyyk anytime soon! However, they do have multiple courses starting in Peterborough this autumn, from Hampton to Parnwell to central Peterborough and Whittlesey, so no location is too far away, especially with transport costs covered. Last month I was lucky enough to attend the latest offering from the New Theatre’s autumn programme as I managed to grab tickets to see Avenue Q, the critically-acclaimed smash hit musical which boasts a laugh-outloud soundtrack and stars some very naughty puppets! Jonathan Pie is a fictitious exasperated news reporter played by actor and comedian Tom Walker, and his videos regularly achieve millions of views from going viral internationally, with his response to the election of Donald Trump being viewed more than 150 million times worldwide. Independent bar SAMM’s nears its first anniversary of opening on Bridge Street and there’s no let up in the eclectic mix of entertainment on offer. Regular live music nights continue (see Gig Guide) and on Thursday November 28 there’ll be a special charity gig in aid of Peterborough Rape Crisis. First up though, it’s the Monster Mash-Up Halloween Party on Friday November 1 followed by more great comedy with Pearface bringing top stand up comedians to the venue on Tuesday November 5 and on Wednesday November 6 it’s Connect After Hours the business networking event. Lip Sync Battle 3 takes place on Wednesday November 13 and really shouldn’t be missed, and Once Upon a Time in Peterborough, the monthly dramatic showcase put on by ACT Peterborough is back on Wednesday November 27. A.SKILLZ AND ECLECTIC BALLROOM The Eclectic Ballroom nights at the Dog House Cocktail Bar in Westgate Aracde continue and on Saturday November 9 the guys are joined by Adam Mills, aka A Skillz, a breaks DJ and producer from the UK who’s spun at parties and festivals across the globe. Across the years, he has combined funk and soul – the backbone of old-school and golden age rap, his primary inspirations – with flashes of drum’n’bass and dubstep. Last month ESP was invited to the exclusive re-launch of Embassy, the end result of a £500,000 refurbishment of one of the city's most popular bars.

reviously well known as Edwards, the bar debuted not only a new name, but also a new look that simply has to be seen to be believed due to its complete transformation into an art-deco inspired hotspot. The booths have now been revamped to include plush floral seating and everywhere you look is a photo opportunity, from the gorgeous light features to the sophisticated 1920s glassware – so much attention to detail has been given to the new bar it's almost as if it’s a completely different place altogether. On the night we were also welcomed with a free drinks voucher so we were gratefully able to sample some impressive cocktails, with my favourites including the dune bag and passionfruit martini, however
Embassy also provides cocktail masterclass packages and VIP table experiences – ideal for any upcoming Christmas parties! Gold-En Year for Peterborough Band on original music. Dave writes the nucleus of the lyrics and music but is adamant that it’s not presented as preformed to the band – “We effectively put it together as a final version between us.” The quality of Dave’s song writing is clearly a major strength of the band and each of them have a different favourite track from the album. The success of Before Dark Clouds has meant that Austin Gold released a second, mini album in August called AG2. Again this has received great acclaim from the music press and radio and will be featured at the Brewery Tap and Stamford Corn Exchange gigs. The demand has been such that they’re already planning a third album for next year and are looking to undertake a couple of extensive tours visiting all parts of the UK. And they promise that the tours will finish with a home town gig. Dave told me – “The importance of our home fans is so special. They have invested in us, they know all the lyrics and it’s a huge thrill to have your own lyrics sung back at you during a performance. It also means I have to be word perfect otherwise they will know I’ve slipped up!” All of the guys wanted me to pass on a big thanks to their local fans for helping make it a special year. Lee added – “We were told that we have the honour of being the first local band to perform sell-out concerts at the Key and we’re so grateful for all the support.” They clearly get on with each other and from the moment that they got together they’ve enjoyed performing and developing Austin Gold. If, like me, you couldn’t get to the annual Austin Gold gig at the Key Theatre, which as usual was a sell-out, then there are two more opportunities for us to see them locally before Christmas. The first is at the Brewery Tap on Thursday November 14 and then at Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday December 14. There is also a stripped back acoustic gig at St John’s Church in the city centre on Friday January 17. 2019 has been an extraordinary year for the band which has seen a huge rise in their nationwide popularity. All four members of the band have a heavy involvement in the local music scene. David James Smith (vocals & guitar), Lee Churchill (bass), Russell Hill (Hammond & keyboards) and Chris Ogden (drums), have been building a reputation as one of the best live acts around by touring extensively throughout the UK. Because of their busy schedule it took me a while to track them down for a chat about their year. I began by asking them what they considered to be behind their success. Russell told me – “It’s the synergy between all four of us playing live that’s quite special. The four of us just gel.” Dave added – “It doesn’t matter whether we’re playing the smallest clubs or the high profile festival stages or rehearsing continuously we have come to learn and predict each other’s moves.” And as Chris pointed out – “We actually like each other.” That obviously helps! Besides the Key Theatre gig they rated another highlight to be The Ramblin Man Fair in July where they played the main stage alongside Foreigner, Cheap Trick and Ugly Kid Joe. “We seemed fearless in front of our biggest crowd and we didn’t feel phased at all by the magnitude of the event.” The album, Before Dark Clouds, has proved a great success receiving extensive radio airplay on all the major UK stations. It reflects and compliments the band’s decision to concentrate

Charity Metal Night
Since its relaunch under new management The Ostrich on North Street has made its mark on the local music scene once again. This month they have another packed line up of live music (see Gig Guide) with some special events planned too. It’s great to see the monthly originals acoustic night on a Thursday will be a regular fixture, organised by Rob Bull of Children of the Revolution the opener in October was a resounding success. This month there’s another high quality line up on Thursday November 7 with Dave Smith (Austin Gold), Glove Compartment (Anthony Shiels / Candle Thieves), Robert J Bull (Children of the Revolution) and Johnny Quinn (the Mighty and the High). The music starts at 8.30pm and it’s free admission. They’ve also introduced regular Sunday Sessions at 4pm which will feature Black Dog Murphy on Sunday November 24 and Dave Smith on December 22. Next month they have a Charity Bands Night for Cancer Research in memory of Matt Lancaster on Friday December 27. I’ll have more on that in the next issue, and if you’re already making plans for where to spend your New Year’s Eve I can tell you that The Money Shot will be providing the tunes at The Ostrich on December 31 and it’s free admission.
Here’s the heads up for any metal fans out there – a big charity night is coming up at SAMM’s bar on Bridge Street on December 13. It’s raising money for Stamford based charity Anna’s Hope and has been organised by metal fan and gig reviewer Tom Mcgougan. The bands are Killerkorp a metal band from Ipswich, Back Down or Die a hard core band from Norwich, Own Your Life a hard core band from St Neots and Peterborough’s very own Vendetta UK. It’s good to see local businesses tattoo studio Rites and Rituals and AA accountants support Tom’s efforts. You can find out more on Facebook and the just giving page has already raised £250!

Desperado @ Stamford The internationally acclaimed Desperado are appearing at the Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday November 30. No prizes for guessing that Desperado are regarded as one of the finest Eagles tributes around. The show which is two hours plus, includes all the Eagles classics like Hotel California, Take it Easy and Desperado, and it features the trademark sweet vocal harmony, layered over dual guitar breaks complete with licks, slides and solos. Live Music at New Theatre It’s great to see Peterborough’s New Theatre getting off to a great start under Selladoor. The venue is ideal for those big musicals that have been in the West End and for us that means we can see these shows in our home city and save transport costs travelling to London or elsewhere. But I also see that future bookings include some really exciting original artists visiting Peterborough as part of their nationwide tours. Lulu brought her On Fire tour to the New Theatre last month and Shalamar are bringing their greatest hits tour here for a fantastic Saturday night gig on November 2. They’ll be supported by Phil Fearon and Galaxy so it should be quite the party. Already for early 2020 original artists booked to appear are rock ‘n’ roll hero Joe Brown on January 17, Irish Country pop star Nathan Carter on February 7, Toploader on February 8 and Paul Carrack on February 23. I know a lot of fans of these artists would happily travel 50/60 miles to see them perform, so what a great chance we all have to see them in Peterborough at New Theatre.
The Ploughman’s Winter Beer Fest is back and as ever it’s packed with real ales and great live bands. Running from Wednesday December 4 – Sunday December 8 at this great community pub in Werrington it kicks off with Holli’s Christmas Quiz night on the Wednesday. Then the music gets underway with The Palmy Ukulele Band Practice on the Thursday and Friday night will be rocking with The Mighty & The High. On Saturday The Nuggets keep it live and then it’s your turn on to join in with Mighty Mouth Karaoke. All charity proceeds will be going to Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice and there’ll be a big Christmas raffle over the weekend. Holli Posnett from the pub has been fundraising for the charity to mark the 20th anniversary of losing her mum to cancer and has already raised £12,000. She’s run the PGER, held bake sales and just hasn’t stopped – now the pub’s Winter Beer Festival will be another fundraiser. Holli told ESP – “I feel that, if my fundraising efforts in mum’s memory are just a small percentage of the efforts she put into us growing up as children, then I’m doing something right. I would like to hope she’d be extremely proud. I just hope that this money can help to continue the amazing support and care that the hospice currently gives. “When you are inside the hospice, you get a real feeling of care and warmth. If I had to describe Thorpe Hall in three words, it would be caring, amazing and calm. At the worst time of your life, it is the best place you can be. There will always be a big place in my heart for Thorpe Hall as it is where I have the last memories of Mum.” The event will be a real celebration and Holli can’t wait to see everyone enjoy the ales, some top live music and the great atmosphere at the pub so why not pop down and help raise a little cash for this great local charity while you have a cracking night out.
