PETERBOROUGH PRIDE IS BACK!
Peterborough Pride is set to return and has been extended to run over two weeks. Pride celebrations will return to Peterborough from Monday June 29 until Sunday July 12, this year for a two week festival of events across the city! As with previous years, Pride will also include a spectacular parade and street party which will take place on Saturday July 12. Simon Green, Chair of Peterborough Pride told ESP – "We have now extended the festival to run over two weeks, which is a reflection of how much Pride has grown year on year. It's truly incredible what we have achieved so far, especially as Peterborough was a little late to the Pride party! "We are now in our third year and have quickly become recognised as one of the up and coming, most happening, inclusive and vibrant Pride events regionally. Our focus for 2020 is twofold: to strengthen our local LGBT+ community and showcase LGBT+ talent." AUTOFEST IS REVVING UP!
Listen up petrolheads – Modified Nationals and the National Hod Rod Show are back under the umbrella title ‘Autofest’. The newly rebranded event from motorsport specialists No Limits Events & Promotions Ltd is coming to the East of England Arena & Events Centre on May 30 and 31. The new event is a two-day festival and lifestyle event devoted to customised vehicles and culture with loads of driving demo’s, static displays indoors and out, live event stages, club stands, plus a tattoo convention and traders, all taking place throughout the venue’s indoor and outdoor event spaces. Autofest also features three live stages of DJs and music, the DJ and Show Hall Competition Stage, dozens of American Low-Riders and the world-famous The Wall of Death. There’s free entry for children and there’ll be plenty of bouncy castles, children’s rides, face-painting and other family-friendly activities and entertainment. SPRINGFIELDS OUTLET PLANS TO EXPAND
Springfields Outlet has submitted plans to South Holland District Council for a major new investment in the centre. Following community consultation last year, Springfields’ owners, the Triton Property Fund LP managed by UBS Asset Management, have finalised plans which could see around 15 new stores plus three café/ restaurant units being built.
As well as new retail and leisure space the development also provides further investment into improvements of the Festival Gardens, along with 236 additional parking spaces and the introduction of more electric vehicle chargers. If approved, the new proposals are expected to attract more high-end fashion retail and is expected to create around 350 new jobs. A decision’s expected in the summer.
WORK BEGINS ON QUEENSGATE’S £60M EXTENSION
Works to Queensgate’s muchanticipated £60m extension begins on Monday March 9 which will bring us a 10screen Empire cinema, new restaurants and stores opening in late 2021. In preparation for the works, some of the bus services are being relocated to Acland Street, which is currently undergoing construction to create a temporary facility for bus users. The temporary bus station will have directions for people to and from the current bus station, a safe traffic light crossing route on Westgate Road, additional CCTV and lighting as well as a weatherproof bus shelter. A pop up information stand will be in the bus station to help with Stagecoach bus information. An Evening with Eric & Ern
Direct from the West End - Eric and Ern is a fantastic homage to the comedy genius of Morecambe and Wise. Starring Olivier Award nominated duo Ian Ashpitel and Jonty Stephens the show is packed full of Morecambe and Wise’s most loved routines, songs and sketches all performed with a respectful affection that will bring back the sunshine that was the hallmark of Eric & Ern’s TV and live shows. There’ll be an added poignancy to the tour’s date in Peterborough, as the city was referenced numerous times in their TV shows of the 70s and 80s thanks to Ernie living on Thorpe Park Road for many years in the late 1950s and early 1970s. Ernie settled in the city after marrying a local girl, Doreen Blythe at Park Road Baptist Church, and with Eric as his best man you can just imagine the laughter that would’ve ensued at the reception held afterwards at The Great Northern Hotel! One of the best references to Peterborough came in the Morecambe & Wise 1981 Christmas Special. Eric proudly announces that a statue in Ernie’s honour will be unveiled outside Peterborough Town Hall and gives Ern a sneak preview which he’s horrified to see that due to a mix up isn’t of his face but his backside! Ian & Jonty’s tribute to the much missed duo is sure to evoke plenty more magical Morecambe & Wise moments and is certainly one to catch when it heads to the New Theatre on Sunday March 29. Made in Dagenham It’s finally time to celebrate a piece of history and enjoy one of the best British musicals on stage here in Peterborough. We have some fantastic talent in this city and one of our leading local theatre groups – Westwood Musical Society – are following their smash hit Spamalot with their new production of Made in Dagenham. Inspired by a true story and based on the hit movie, Made in Dagenham is the new
British comedy musical about friendship, love and the importance of fighting for what is right. You can’t beat a real story that skillfully mixes all the elements of human struggle, plenty of laughs and some cracking tunes for a real feel-good night out and this show at the Key Theatre will definitely be that! It follows the fortunes of Ford factory machinist Rita O’Grady and the girls from the Dagenham car plant and their quest for equality for women. With a laugh-out-loud script by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors, and The Hypocrite) it was dubbed ‘The best British musical since Billy Elliot’ by The Stage when it hit the West End in 2014. Lamphouse Theatre Head To The Bar The creative team at Peterborough based Lamphouse are bringing theatre to the masses by taking shows out of the usual setting and staging them… in the pub! Another brilliant local group who bring us some amazing shows are Peterborough Operatic and Dramatic Society – better known as PODS – and they’re warming up for another great show coming our way in May.
Following the sell-out success of Hairspray and their acclaimed production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang which we can assure you were both fantastic – this multiaward-winning group are all set present the regional première of the Broadway smash hit, Shrek The Musical throughout May half-term at the Cresset. “Once upon a time, there was a little Ogre named Shrek….” And so begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a lifechanging quest alongside a wise-cracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. t’s new and never been licensed in Peterborough, with TOP being the first to bring it here after its West End production. Kinky Boots is the winner of every major Best Musical award, including the Tony, London’s Olivier Award and the Grammy and they’re now looking for youngsters to join the cast for this Peterborough production in October. Based on true events, this huge-hearted hit tells the story of two people with nothing in common – or so they think! Charlie is a factory owner struggling to save his family business. Lola is a fabulous entertainer with a wildly exciting idea. With a little compassion and a lot of understanding, this unexpected pair learns to embrace their differences and creates a line of sturdy stilettos unlike any the world has ever seen! But in the end, their most sensational achievement is their friendship. Based on the Miramax film Kinky Boots, it features 16 original songs by Cyndi Lauper with a live band and the guest choreographer for this production was a member of the original cast. This amateur production, produced by TOP Theatre Productions in partnership with New Theatre Peterborough, will be an incredible opportunity for any young people interested in hitting the stage. It’ll enjoy a run at the New Theatre from Thursday October 15 to Saturday October 17. Relay for Life launched in Peterborough A new fundraising event is coming to Peterborough for the first time this September. ESP went along to the launch of Relay For Life in aid of Cancer Research UK and heard some really touching stories from people affected by cancer who are keen to see this new event raise funds for more vital research. Relay For Life is a family festival celebrating the power of community fundraising in the fight to beat cancer. Families, friends and work colleagues in Peterborough are now being encouraged to sign up for the event and start to fundraise in advance of the relay which will take place on September 12 & 13 at Lynch Wood Park. Teams of between 8 to 15 people, of all ages, levels of fitness and walks of life are asked to raise vital funds through a wide range of activities from karaoke to quizzes, supermarket bag-packs to charity balls and donations from their family, friends and work colleagues. Cherie Titchener, volunteer Event Chair of Relay for Life Peterborough said: “During the relay itself, team members take it in turns to walk around a track for 24-hours to show their solidarity in the fight to beat cancer. A variety of stalls, games and music from local performers provide entertainment for the whole family. Drapers and College get a revamp One door closes and another one opens in March when we’ll see the eagerly awaited £1.4m refurbishment of the Draper’s Arms and The College Arms has also now taken time out for a makeover. The Draper’s has been a popular watering hole (with a cracking quiz) for 15 years and it’s nearly always bursting at the seams when I’ve been, which is why I’m looking forward to checking out the muchneeded extension added to the rear of the building. It means more space for customers, plus we’re getting both a rear courtyard garden and a new roof terrace garden. Inside we’ll see a new colour scheme, carpets, lighting and a mix of new and refurbished furniture and artwork. You can check it out yourself when they reopen on March 17.

The guys over at the College tell me their refurbishment will be mainly focusing on reintroducing and extending their beer garden at the rear, which will include heat lamps. The hedge that runs along the front of the building will also be removed and replaced by outside seating. They’re also due to reopen on March 17 so all being well you’ll be able to do a Wetherspoons pub crawl to see the improvements. Both places sound like they’ll be great for a spot of alfresco swigging and scoffing. Now all we need is for it to stop raining please.
So, JLS are reuniting for their Beat Again 2020 tour but unfortunately our boy Aston Merrygold and the rest of the band aren’t playing in Peterborough. Their first city performance (for under 18s only if I remember) in 2009 was at Club Metro on London Road – a hurriedly thrown together venue that wouldn’t have looked out of place in downtown Harlem during the 1980s. Thankfully, the boys returned a year later to play on the Embankment and local fans turned out in their thousands. The new tour starts in November and the closest cities to us are Nottingham, Birmingham and London. Surely there’s a venue and promoter in Peterborough that’ll accommodate a pre-tour date for us to go and see them on our doorstep?

Britain home to more Italians than Irish?

I do love a good statistic and especially when it’s to do with migration. For the first time, Italians could outnumber the Irish with almost 300,000 of my Mediterranean brothers making the UK their home. Currently, there are 322,000 Irish people living in Britain. I can’t speak for the Irish but I’m certain the Italians are flocking to these shores for the weather and food.
Bring It On Louis The New Theatre Peterborough continues to provide top quality shows for all tastes and another of our city boys is starring in their latest offering. I get the feeling Louis Smith is really enjoying his theatre career and you can book to see him take centre stage in Bring It On this August. Our Olympic, world medallist and Strictly champion will be performing under the lights with West End star and Love Island winner Amber Davies. Inspired by the film of the same name, the guys at the theatre tell me Bring It On takes you on a high-flying, energy-fuelled journey that tackles friendship, jealousy, betrayal and forgiveness – wrapped up in explosive choreography and tricks, which is just down Louis’s street. And watching shows has just got even better with the theatre’s DIVA app launch. It stands for Deliver In Venue App and this means you can order drinks to your seat ready for the interval, instead of having to leave the auditorium and queue for two weeks. I asked the guys if they could DIVA Katya to my seat when she was performing over Christmas. Unfortunately, she was washing her hair at the time but I bet that’s where they got the idea from!

No More Bedtime Bickering March is National Bed Month and a new duvet from Silentnight is set to solve tiffs between couples by allowing each partner to select how hot or cold they like their side of the bed. Thanks Silentnight but you’ve failed to address the real issue of a man sleeping with a woman. Women take over the bed like they’re laying out a picnic and men ‘sleep’ on a 30cm stretch along the edge. It means you’re faced with an elbow and an outstretched leg when turning one way – or turn the other way, fall flat on the bedroom floor and break your nose. So much for a Silentnight. More like Silentfright.
SNIFFING OUT OPPORTUNITY? Poo-Pourri is a before-you-go toilet spray that’s been launched in the UK following huge success in the US. I can think of a couple of ex-girlfriends who could do with a crate-load of this stuff. We’ve had our randomly-named storms and my garden is destroyed but today I saw a woman wearing flip-flops when it’s 7 degrees outside. This must mean spring’s arrived and here are other signs that say so: The bloke next to me in Morrison’s wearing a vest and buying a BBQ while I’m in my puffa looking at water bottles, people sitting in beer-gardens when the wind’s blowing over small children, people driving convertibles with the roof down but wearing a hat and scarf and Easter eggs in the shops – oh, wait, that was in February.

The heat is on for the Sport Relief celebs, but ESP’s Darren Grigas got there first!
A
team of celebrities are going to attempt a desert crossing challenge for Sport Relief, one which our very own local adventurer and ESP columnist, Darren Grigas, helped to pioneer. The original plan was to run across a 100-mile frozen lake in Mongolia in temperatures as low as -35 degrees. This was another challenge which Darren was the lead runner on, but due to concerns about the Coronavirus, changes were made, and the

celebs will now be in slightly warmer conditions in Namibia. Over four days the unwavering celebrities will now be aiming to cross more than 100 miles of desert including some of the largest sand dunes in the world. In late 2018 Darren was part of a team from Rat Race Adventure Sports who traversed the route for the very first time to test it out and see if it would make one of the Rat Race Bucket List experiences. This massive national park in Namibia dubbed ‘The Sea of Sand’ is a desert covering more than 100,000 square miles. As lead runner, our ESP columnist and resident ‘action man’ was the first person to ever run across this stretch of the Namib Desert, running out to a 111-year old shipwreck on the Skeleton Coast. Now a team of brave celebrities are taking on this extreme challenge on foot, by bike and may even have a go at skiing down some of the dunes, all for Sport Relief 2020 to raise life-changing cash and tackle mental health stigma. BBC Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, The Saturdays’ Frankie Bridge, TV barrister and presenter Judge Rob Rinder, broadcaster Louise Minchin, TV presenter Karim Zeroual, Eastenders’ star Samantha Womack and C4 newsman Krishnan GuruMurthy will be embarking on this challenge of a
lifetime to raise money for Sport Relief. Along the route they’ll be sharing the desert with an abundance of wildlife, including, leopards, ostriches, lizards, snakes, hyenas, zebra and jackals. Darren recalled the jackals stalking him for a few miles, hoping he’d keel over so they could get a nice snack. Fortunately for him and us, he wasn’t hanging around to feed the locals, and came back safe to tell us all about it. All of the action’s been filmed for a BBC One documentary which will air the week of Sport Relief, which is back on Friday March 13. For one of the celebrities taking part it’s a particularly significant cause. Despite seemingly having it all when she was in girl group The Saturdays, singer Frankie Bridge has revealed she was battling her own mental health issues. “I know first-hand about how difficult struggling with your own mental health can be,” said Frankie. “One of the hardest parts is speaking out about it. I first started talking

about it in 2012; it was the best thing I could have done, and it’s still something I deal with daily. This is why I wanted to take on this challenge for Sport Relief, to spark a conversation about mental health and let people know that they don’t have to go through anything alone.” TV barrister and presenter Judge Rob Rinder said he’s also been affected – “I have had mental health challenges over the years and the thing that I found to be the most powerful and lasting for me, is to set aside some time, every day, to talk to people, and to exercise.” BBC Breakfast broadcaster Louise Minchin might be a little more equipped for the challenge in terms of fitness but admitted it was still a daunting task – “Yes, I’ve done
endurance sports before, but this is going to be a world away and a whole new level above anything I’ve ever attempted! I’m used to discussing the big topics on BBC Breakfast most mornings, so I’m thrilled to be part of a challenge with Sport Relief which aims to start a dialogue and help remove the stigma around mental health. It is an enormous global issue – one in four of us will experience mental health issues in our lifetime, and so many of these people don’t get the help they need.” You don’t need to trek across a desert but there are plenty of other things you can do to fundraise – so come on Peterborough, let’s get raising some money for some great causes.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…
CHANGE It is a word that often scares people. But change sometimes is a necessity. Sometimes it is essential. At Peterborough United, the month of February provided change. Some of it was exciting, some of it was scary and some of it was emotional. London Road has been our home for decades. It’s provided memories that we will never forget, from promotions, to glorious goals and everything in between. It’s where fans made their first ever pilgrimage to support their local club, it is still to this day where families and children are seeing their maiden live football match. I remember watching my first Posh game at London Road. I remember progressing into the terrace behind the goal where every Saturday afternoon became a voyage, a
place to enjoy football with my friends and two hours where school or college could be forgotten. So when we announced that the club had signed a MOU (memorandum of understanding) for a potential new site for a stadium, it evoked many emotions for those connected with the club and those that have grown up with it as part of their lives. Adrian Durham, Talksport Drive’s presenter (from Peterborugh) and Posh fan for many decades spoke
about his love affair for the club and London Road, it resonated. Nobody likes to see something they love be replaced. But while change can be daunting, it can also be exciting. I don’t think anyone who saw the plans unveiled by our co-owners Randy Thompson, Jason Neale and Darragh MacAnthony looked upon the 17,500 stadium (with potential to grow that by more as the club progresses) would have not been a little excited. A new stadium is essential to match the ambitions of the football club. But not only that, it is fair to say that London Road is showing plenty of wear and tear. For those that voyage to PE2 on a Saturday afternoon, they can see for themselves the paintwork, the scratches and bruises that the stadium naturally displays. On a day to day basis, our maintenance team are doing their very best to keep it fit for order. But as time progresses, the application of a band aid can only do so much. I, for one, am very excited about the future. I’ve grown up on the terraces and now the press box and I get a buzz walking into the ground
every day. But I know I will get that buzz again at the new stadium. It is what football does to you. Change has to happen. You have to try and embrace it. It doesn’t always come with a balloon and a sticker, but it is part of the world we live in. Change can be emotional. Football has the power to move people, but it also has the power to bring people together. You may have seen the desperately sad news regarding our Groundsman Will Whitney, who sadly passed away at the age of 21 in tragic circumstances. It hit everybody at the club hard. At times like these, you have to try and show unity and be together and we have done our best to help everyone through it. When you work for the football club you become part of the family. Families stick together. We will continue to stick together. It doesn’t matter what your ‘home’ is, families always come together. Our home might be changing in the future, but mark my words, the football club won’t.

With the relationship life, there are complaints of financial stress, the daily nagging from both sides, not having personal space and the biggest conundrum is dealing with the inlaws. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of highs I’ve been told – the joys of kids, having someone there to navigate through the good and bad times, building those foundations – but is becoming an adult, dare I say it, boring? The perks of being single are that thrill of the early days, the chase almost during the period where you’re not exclusive, having that element of romance that seems to be missing from that settled relationship life. The downsides being it can get disheartening when it doesn’t quite go right, as well as those days when you just want
someone there to chill out with but don’t have that lasting connection and of course the costs of going on a lot of dates is expensive. But should I bow down to the pressure of feeling like I need to be in a relationship because of society? Does the best life depend on where you are at in life? Can meeting the right person change this perception? Most importantly, does date night still happen in a relationship? Can it be just as exciting as the dating single life? The lead track from the album, Don’t Start Now, proved a massive worldwide hit and her show stopping award performances at The EMA’s, The AMA’s and The ARIA’s delighted millions of viewers and her fans everywhere. Latest single Physical is proving just as popular accompanied by an epic video with Dua strutting confidently with her new blonde locks and an army of extras. Speaking about her second album Future Nostalgia, Dua explains – “What I wanted to do with this album was to break out of my comfort zone and challenge myself to make music that felt like it could sit alongside some of my favourite classic pop songs, whilst still feeling fresh and uniquely mine. I was inspired by so many artists on the new record from Gwen Stefani to Madonna to Moloko to Blondie and Outkast, to name just a few.” Dua continues – “Because of the time that I’d spent on the road touring with my band I wanted Future Nostalgia to have a lot more of a live element, but mixed together with modern electronic production. Back in 2018 Dua Lipa picked up best British Female Solo Act and British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards, when she called for more female acts to be recognized, but this year’s awards came in for criticism over a lack of female nominees once again. In a recent interview on BBC’s The One Show, Dua spoke of her desire to see females more widely represented across the music industry, not just performers but in production and engineering roles and how she herself felt like she had taken a real step forward with the latest album. “I actually felt a lot more confident doing this album than I did the first. I felt like I found my feet in the studio – I went in and I dictated every session. A Stamford teenager is aiming for the stars as she takes the lead in upcoming TV series The Luna Squad. We love to celebrate local talent here at ESP and Mikey Clarke has the latest on our new star in the making...
T
he Luna Squad is an upcoming sci-fi adventure series created by Cinalight Studios and directed by Leon Mitchell (originally Mikey Clarke from Peterborough) – whose films have played on Sky and Amazon Prime. The story of The Luna Squad sees Stamford’s Brooke Fleming take the lead role as the 14-year-old schoolgirl and budding explorer Ashley, who finds a mysterious map inside an old comic book following the breaking news story of a UFO sighting. It has everything a great children’s show should have and the series will see Ashley (Brooke) persuading her friends to join her on an amazing time travelling adventure. The feisty Kizzie, big brother Jack, the brains of the gang Nick, Max the cool kid, Kara the comic book nerd, the comedian Cub and the edgy Scarlett head out on a hunt to find the UFO crash site, leading to them going back in time and having an adventure of a lifetime. A new generation of superheroes are born, leaping through the universe and stars, but they’re not alone, a dark side is around every corner. In this case The Dark Side is led by the evil Lady V who The Luna Squad will encounter on their journey – alongside others loyal to The Dark Side! Sounds exciting, right? I thought so too. My excitement heightened after hearing that it's been described as the British Goonies and the new Stranger Things.

The role of the group leader is an incredible launch pad for young Stamford based Brooke Fleming. I caught up with the 14-year-old to find out what it was like getting this incredible opportunity ahead of the 5000 young people that auditioned. "It was amazing," she told me. "I tried to keep the audition light-hearted and fun but more importantly, I was just myself throughout. I got the call one day after school, telling me I had the part. Me and my family were so excited." The young actress continued – "Filming this was an amazing experience. Everybody got along really well. I'd particularly like to thank the team behind the scenes who work so hard and made us all feel so comfortable from the moment we auditioned to the last day on set." Sadly, Brooke couldn’t go into too much detail at this point, so you'll have to look out for a much more in-depth interview closer to the transmission date – which is not
confirmed yet, but will be in the next few months. Expect to hear about The Luna Squad everywhere! Alongside the television show there will also be a comic book. The Luna Squad Volume 1 of the comic, The Map, will feature 2 covers (The Squad and The Dark Side) and is also due out soon. The comic will be heavily linked to the show but will also feature all-new side missions. On top of that, the lead cast members have also recorded a soundtrack to accompany the series. I was treated to a sneak-peek of some of the songs and the quality is no doubt a reflection on what will be an amazing show. Throw in the cinematographer James Ian Grey (who worked on the recent box office hit Yesterday) and you've got quite the team behind The Luna Squad – which I can't wait to watch when it hits national TV. 27 At this rate Disney will soon run out of former animations to convert to live-action films – as they continue to churn out multiple movies from their back catalogue every year. And sadly that has seemingly affected the overall quality with Dumbo (released last March) receiving poor reviews and underwhelming box-office results, and last year’s The Lion King and Aladdin also garnering mixed reviews – despite both still soaring when it came to taking cinematic ‘coin’. So it will be interesting to see how this more adult-orientated offering – expected to be a 12A compared to the usual PG rating of most Disney films of its ilk – based on the 1998 Ming Na Wen/Eddie Murphy-led fantasy animation will fare, particularly with The House of Mouse putting the brakes on the Star Wars franchise cinematically after over-estimating saturation of that brand. When the Emperor of China (Jet Li) issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Chinese Army to defend the country from the threat of Huns – the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Disguised as a man called Hua Jun, the spirited and determined Hua Mulan (Liu Yifei) is tested every step of the way as she harnesses her innermost strength and embraces her true potential, in this epic journey that will transform her into an honoured warrior – and earn her the respect of a nation.
The publicity surrounding the latest Disney/Pixar animation has been a little lower-key compared to some of their other major releases, but when whatever they touch usually turns to gold – underestimate this at your peril. Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers – Ian (Tom ‘Spider-Man’ Holland) and Barley Lightfoot (Chris ‘Star-Lord’ Pratt) – go on a journey to discover if there is any magic left in the world, in order to spend one last day with their father who died when they were too young to remember him.

Spring clean your lifestyle It’s almost spring and I know many of you will feel the shift energetically and suddenly start a cleanup of wardrobes, cupboards, cars and your body. When the longer days arrive, we’re more inclined to want to shed a few pounds and start a new healthier regime.

Oily fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids 2-3 times a week
•
Beans/lentils and other pulses
•
Limited dairy products – i.e. natural yoghurts, small amounts of cheese (however not everyone does well with dairy food so it needs to be personalised)

Small amounts of healthy fats such as avocado, olives, drizzle of olive oil, nuts and seeds
•
Reduced red meat consumption
•
Chicken and eggs 2-3 times per week
•
Moderate red wine but a daily water intake (chronic dehydration is common in our lives today)
Various spices and herbs can help to lower inflammation which include ginger, cinnamon, fennel seeds, turmeric and much more, these can be added easily to foods.

What can pave the way for these is what is called metabolic syndrome which is a term describing insulin resistance, cholesterol problems and high blood pressure. There is also a known connection with weight gain and metabolic syndrome and that is inflammation.

When we think of inflammation we naturally think of the acute reaction from an injury, allergic reaction or cuts when the body will react to the site of injury to heal and repair damaged tissue with noticeable heat, swelling, pain and lack of movement.
Lifestyle and diet play the biggest role in metabolic syndrome. A nutrient poor diet, high in saturated fats, sugars, refined carbohydrates, too much red meat, a lack of exercise, smoking and stress can be the drivers towards chronic-inflammation. A healthy weight loss programme should be supported with an anti-inflammatory diet, stress reduction and exercise. A type of diet that’s more geared towards the traditional Mediterranean style of eating has been shown to be helpful in long term successful weight loss, lowering inflammation and therefore lowering the disease risks. This would include: •
Chronic inflammation is very much a silent response and may be a key player in low grade inflammation that can trigger metabolic disturbances. We need fat to protect our internal organs and store our reserve of nutrients but with excess weight and obesity we put ourselves at a higher risk of inflammation which can lead to metabolic syndrome which can lead to diabetes and heart disease.

Fibre – from fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, some whole grains (many exclude gluten foods which can be pro-inflammatory but quinoa and brown rice can be enjoyed in moderation) and other various plant foods. A colourful plate – choose foods with colour such as berries, leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, carrots, mangoes, butternut and other squashes, melons and sweet potato which deliver various phytonutrients.
Our gut microbes have recently been of interest in medical research as they may help to reduce the low grade inflammation and lower the risk of metabolic disturbances as well as help with weight loss. A diet rich in plant foods can deliver prebiotics which are a special source of fibre that can feed our friendly bacteria. Fermented foods and targeted probiotic strains can all help. The Mediterranean diet may not suit everyone, some people may need less focus on grains/pulses, but it’s a step in a healthier direction for many. The removal of fried foods, refined sugar and carbohydrate are important as is the reduction of red meat, alcohol, gluten (for some) and excess dairy foods which can have traces of hormones and antibiotic residues. Intermittent fasting may also reduce inflammation and lessen the risk of these chronic conditions. Exercise regulates fat and glucose metabolism and results in an increased action of insulin, while it also lowers blood pressure. Stress reduction and a mindfulness practice is also equally important. Sue Ryder launches campaign #JustSaySomething This campaign is a bid to encourage people to open up about grief after the loss of a loved one. Due to their ‘naked’ products, meaning they have no packaging, the store smells amazing and is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for products which are better for the environment. After a consultation with the Store Manager Georgia, over the next few weeks I’m trying out ‘Jason and The Argan Oil’ shampoo bar, ‘Scrubee’ body butter bar and the ‘Nana’ shower gel. Georgia recommended these products due to my sensitive and eczema prone skin and my love of sweet smells. Before Lin wanted a casual look to compliment her social lifestyle that looked modern and age appropriate. Interestingly Lin has a petite figure and was wearing clothes that where far too big for her, mistakenly thinking that this made her look slimmer. However, by wearing the right size and fit I was able to show her what a huge difference this made to her overall look.
Gemma has also lost weight recently and mainly wanted some ideas around outfits that showed her personality and also that she could make practical when needed. The easiest way to dress down an outfit is to change your footwear for either a cool pair of trainers or ankle boots with a low heel. Our shopping trip started with getting Gemma measured for her bra size. This was truly enlightening for her because she was wearing completely the wrong size. I was able to show her the huge difference that it makes to the fit of your clothes.
Colour was also a huge challenge for Lin, she has a lot of black in her wardrobe and she had never worn pink. Pink is one of Lin’s best colours and can be teamed with many other colours, including navy, burgundy, cream and lots of others. Lin was so happy with the outfits that we chose that she bought all of them!
This gorgeous red dress is a stunning colour on her and the belt allows her to show off her waist, adding a leather jacket would give the look more of an edge and she would be able to swap the shoes for different footwear to make it more practical. Gemma was actually wearing clothes that where 3 sizes too big for her, as in the ‘before’ picture you can see there is no shape to the dress and it doesn’t show off her curves.

Before Some of Anne’s challenges were around getting clothes to work for her new, slimmer figure and also finding shoes that fit. Due to Anne having lost so much weight, her bra size had also changed and therefore we went to John Lewis to get her measured correctly. I always tell my clients that underwear is literally the foundation that you must get right. Underwear that’s too small creates bulges in all the wrong places and underwear that’s too big offers no support and doesn’t hold anything in the right place. Anne was amazed at the difference it made to how her clothes fitted. Anne’s natural colouring is warm, but her eyes are clear green, meaning that she looks amazing in warm toned colours. We had quite a lot of discussion about colour during our day, Anne confessed that she had a lot of black in her wardrobe (as do most people), however unless you are the one colour palette that can wear black it can be very draining and ageing. I was able to show Anne that her ‘black’ would be light clear navy, light royal blue, brown and warm grey, so plenty to choose from. Every colour palette has its own version of black that works best for their natural skin tones and colouring. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Marks and Spencer, Queensgate for helping us make Anne’s experience easy and enjoyable, they were super helpful.

At her consultation with MBE, Lin expressed concerns with dry skin and fine facial lines also some sun damage to her décolletage area. MBE advised that a Full Face, Neck and Décolletage Combi treatment (normal price £120 per session, Full Face only would be £100) would address these issues.
At Gemma’s consultation MBE found she wasn’t too unhappy with her skin, there were a few enlarged pores and like many of us following the winter months a general dullness and uneven skin tone that needed a boost. Gemma had small skin tags on her upper eyelid that were annoying her as well. MBE decided that a deep cleanse followed by Radio Frequency would give her the lift she was looking for and a Cryotherapy treatment to remove the skin tags.
Lin’s Verdict: “Mary was careful not to promote any particular treatment but took the time to listen, empathise and then advise. She noted I hadn’t looked after the neck and décolletage areas as well as I had done the face. Sun damage, resulting in age spots, gave the chest area a not very flattering mottled appearance. “Nothing was too much trouble for Mary as she talked me through my treatments beforehand and detailed exactly what she was doing during said treatments. Afterwards my face and neck felt tighter and after a few days it seemed the skin on my chest looked more even somehow. “The second treatment took place 3 weeks later as advised by Mary. Everything exactly as before plus a ThermaVien treatment as Mary noticed that I had a few small thread veins around the nose area. “So, what’s the verdict? Face still feeling good, thread veins banished and age spots fading. Mary has said that I will need one more treatment, possibly two, to gain maximum benefit inside and out from both treatments and then I’m good to go for the next 3 – 5 years. “Am I going back? Of course I am!”
Gemma’s Verdict: “I had a deep cleanse and sessions of Radio Frequency treatment. My skin was instantly tighter, open pores were almost not visible. My skin had a natural glow and lines around my eyes were gone. It was amazing and I'm having another 2 treatments which will last for up to 3-5 years. I also had Cryotherapy which removed 2 skin tags from my eyelid. Totally painless, non surgical and both non intrusive but extremely effective. “People notice daily how good my skin is and I have now gone from wearing foundation to an SPF tinted moisturiser. Mary and Martin were friendly warm and professional. They were knowledgeable and I felt at ease instantly.”
Before alternate sessions of their Full Face, Neck and Décolletage Combi treatment to primarily address the pigmentation with IPL, this treatment will also reach the deeper layers of skin with Radio Frequency helping to further boost collagen, tighten elastin and fibroblasts. After 3 weeks she had a Microneedling session to further close open pores, soften lines and wrinkles and lift and tighten the jawline.
Anne’s Verdict: “My skin felt lovely after my treatments! “The pigmentation is lighter so I’m hopeful this will really work in reducing it. I had Radio Frequency for reduction of fine lines and IPL for reduction of pigmentation. The IPL can feel like an elastic band pinging when it hits a pigmented area, the Radio Frequency is heat applied to skin so is relaxing and the facials are lovely before and after the treatments. “Mary is lovely and explains everything – she makes you feel really relaxed and when you leave your skin feels lovely.”

and stalls for all the family to enjoy. The festival will once again raise vital funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, which is the only specialist palliative care inpatient unit in Peterborough. The hospice provides expert care for people with lifelimiting conditions and also supports their families. “Dragon boat racing is so much fun – it works really well for groups of workmates, friends and families. STRIVING FOR SILVERWARE Peterborough Phantoms on the trophy trail once again.

f you’re looking for something new to support or to keep the family entertained, it’s an exciting month to watch Peterborough’s ice hockey team in action on the ice – even if you’ve never given it a try before! It was a successful season for the Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Club last season, as Slava Koulikov’s men picked up three trophies in what was an outstanding year for the club. March will see them put in some more exciting performances which will be an exhilarating watch for existing fans and newcomers to the sport. It began with the Autumn Cup success over the Sheffield Steeldogs, before the South Cup came to Peterborough after a dramatic two-legged victory over the Basingstoke Bison. And the Phantoms made it three trophies for the year when they defeated the Bracknell Bees and were crowned as the NIHL South Playoff Champions. And now, they’re on the hunt for silverware once again as they prepare for the NIHL National Cup Final against the Telford Tigers. The cup began with all ten teams playing for league and cup points, with the aim of finishing in the top four of the cup group. Telford won the group and chose to play against the Swindon Wildcats in the semi-finals. Swindon won the first leg 7-4, but a valiant comeback in the second leg from the Tigers saw them take the game to penalty shots, where Brandon Whistle sent his team into the final.
Telford’s decision left the Phantoms with a tricky task in the semi-final. Historically, Phantoms have tended to struggle in Hull over the last few years, but this was the test that awaited them in the semi-final. And it was a memorable night on Humberside, as a Corey McEwen hat-trick and a Glenn Billing goal put the Phantoms 4-2 ahead after the first leg. It was still all to play for in the second leg, and it was a frantic game in Peterborough, which saw the Phantoms claim an 8-6 win on the night, meaning they progressed to the final, 12-8 on aggregate.
The first leg of the cup final is on Friday March 6 at 7.30pm at Planet Ice Peterborough, with the second leg on Wednesday March 11 in Telford. It is undoubtedly the biggest game of the season so far, and certainly not one to be missed. Tickets are available online and on the night. The Key Comedy Festival is back for its 8th sidesplitting year, and this year The Key welcomes a new show from veteran comedian and star of ITV’s The Chase, Paul Sinha (March 12) with his performance all about finding romance called Hazy Little Thing Called Love. Comedian John Robertson also brings us the viral comedy sensation The Dark Room (March 13) – a live interactive comedy show and text based adventure game in which the audience must survive an almost impossible labyrinth of challenges. Taking place in the venue’s quirky Theatre Lounge, the comedy club’s first night will take place on Friday March 8 and will be headlined by cult comedian Paul Foot. This month may be a strain on the wallet for comedy fans as the New Theatre has just announced that not just one, but two fantastic headliners will be performing at their venue this year. Firstly comedy legend Frank Skinner will be bringing his smash-hit tour, Showbiz, to the New Theatre following a sold out five-week run at the West End’s Garrick Theatre. Performing for one night only on Friday April 24, this new date is an addition to his latest UK tour after previously performing sold-out runs at London’s Leicester Square Theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe. Then later in the year stand-up
comedian Joe Pasquale will be bringing his new show, 2020 Vision, to the New Theatre, which promises to provide audiences with anecdotes of spending a year in the wilderness and becoming at one with nature when he performs on Saturday September 12. Joe Pasquale's big break came when he came second in talent show New Faces in 1987, kickstarting his career as a successful comedian, pantomime regular, and even King of the Jungle back in 2004! Whilst on a recent holiday I saw some fine entertainment amongst which is one act visiting Peterborough’s New Theatre later this year. Her name is Lorraine Crosby and although, like me, you probably haven’t heard of her, you definitely have heard her voice. Lorraine is the female voice on Meat Loaf’s Grammy Award winning song and No 1 hit the world over - I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That). She sings the reprise in this dramatic rock opera. It’s fascinating that Lorraine got the gig purely by chance. She told me – “I was managed by Jim Steinman who was also Meat Loaf’s producer and happened to be in the studios when Meat Loaf wanted to do a trial recording of I’d Do Anything For Love. However, as his usual partners, Ellen Foley or Cher were both unavailable that day I was asked to do the female voice for that trial. Months later I got a phone call from Meat Loaf saying my version was their favourite and could they use it? It didn’t take me long to say yes!” Lorraine has a tremendous voice and is about to commence an extensive UK tour featuring in ‘Steve Steinman's Anything For Love - The Meat Loaf Story’, which visits the New Theatre on November 27. New Single Success For Idolising Nova Congratulations to local indie pop three-piece, Idolising Nova who are enjoying huge success with their latest single. Idolising Nova are Jack Fulton Smith, bass & vocals, Kris Lee, lead guitar and Kyle O'Sullivan on drums, and they released the new single, Stuck In Your Mind, in mid February. After a period in the recording studio, they now intend to go back on the road with their latest gig being at The Finsbury in London. MCV Charity Gig at The Tap The first weekend in April is when Peterborough’s finest soul band, Motor City Vipers, will be hosting their annual charity soul night at The Brewery Tap on Saturday April 4 to help raise funds and awareness for the fantastic work done at Thorpe Hall Hospice here in Peterborough. This is an annual gig which the band try not to miss from their busy schedule and Vipers’ frontman, Alec Chapman told ESP – “We’re looking forward to hosting an amazing night of soulful shenanigans and hoping it will be another sell-out show for this great cause.” The eight-piece MCV were formed in the spring of 2009 and have gained themselves a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting live soul bands – playing a vibrant set of Motown and Northern Soul classics, The Vipers’ repertoire is like a who’s who of soulful floor-fillers from the 60s and 70s – from The Tops, Temptations and Supremes as well as Frank Wilson, Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett . They’ve gained a huge following at all their gigs and supported music legends as diverse as The Blockheads, Neville Staple (The Specials), Kiki Dee, The Commitments, Diane Shaw and Geno Washington. Stone Roses Night at The Met The Met Loung bring us another hardcore tribute evening on Saturday March 14 as they feature Total Stone Roses plus Oaysis. They visit the Met Lounge on Bridge Street as part of The Spike Island 30th Anniversary Tour: This is a celebration of the event which gave the Stone Roses their reputation as one of the UK’s most notable acts by performing at Spike Island, Widnes in May 1990. This was a generation defining gig, a gathering of people during ‘the second summer of love’ that epitomised the Madchester and Rave counter culture movement of the late 1980’s & early 1990’s. Total Stone Roses will give us the opportunity to hear all the favourite Stone Roses anthems performed live by one of the UK’s finest tributes! I thought I would update you on the progress of talented young singer songwriter Thomas Dunleavy who is appearing on CBBC’s talent competition Got What it Takes. Thomas is just 14 years old and goes to Sawtry College. The concept of the show on CBBC is that eight teenage singers compete for a life changing prize to perform at Radio One’s Big Weekend festival in Dundee during the summer. Every episode the
teenagers compete in an industry based challenge to win a place in the sing-off. If they don't win it's down to their mums to win a 'mum' challenge. I’m pleased to report that Thomas is progressing well in the competition and his mum, Sara, who has a fear of rollercoasters, has had to go on an extremely challenging one at Thorpe Park (that’s the dedication of mothers!) Thomas is in the semi final on Wednesday March 4 starting at 5.45pm. The show will be presented by Anna Maynard and Thomas needs our votes to get into the final in mid March.
