NEW STORES @ SERPENTINE GREEN

Construction work’s underway on a £7 million extension to Serpentine Green shopping centre which will see new stores opening. Next is to move into a larger 10,000 sq ft store in one of the new units being created with M&S Simply Food moving into the space vacated by Next, and due to open in time for Christmas 2017. The works, including a further three stores to the front of the existing building, will add to their varied retail line-up. Additional work is being carried out to improve the public space directly in front of the centre, with a new pedestrian square including cycle parking linked to a cycle route through the car park. David Wait, centre manager for Serpentine Green, commented: “It’s important for us that Serpentine Green evolves in line with the needs of retailers and customers, creating the right space for people to shop, eat and drink as well as providing more choice.” Over the coming year, parts of the car park will be re-routed to allow the works to take place. Some adjustments to the car park layout will be made, but disruption should be kept to a minimum.

THE GIFT TREE IS BACK

MINI HELPS KIDS GO TO THE CRESSET PANTO The Cresset Theatre has recently nominated the YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough as its charity of the year. This Christmas a new initiative’s been launched where for just £60 you or your company can sponsor a family ticket to Peter Pan at The Cresset, allowing two children from deprived backgrounds, accompanied by their guardians to see the show, and even have an ice cream at the interval. Also included is a donation to YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough’s homeless hostel. Chris Davis, Brand Manager at Sycamore MINI, who’ve already donated 100 tickets, said – “The team at Sycamore MINI have undertaken a challenge to see how much happiness a MINI can bring to those less fortunate. We are very excited to work with the YMCA and help deserving children this Christmas.” You can also donate gifts at Sycamore MINI, Papyrus Road, Werrington, which will be distributed among the disadvantaged children after the Christmas panto. Anyone interested in sponsoring tickets should contact fundraising@theymca.org.uk for more info.

All you have to do is collect a pre made tag outlining a child’s name, age and gender from the Customer Information desk (outside John Lewis) and donate an unwrapped present up until Wednesday December 21.

KATHARINE OF ARAGON FESTIVAL ON ITS WAY Plans are coming together nicely for next year’s annual Katharine of Aragon Festival at Peterborough Cathedral. Already in place is a lecture by TV historian and academic Dr Suzannah Lipscomb on Friday January 26. She’s an excellent speaker and will be re-evaluating Katharine of Aragon as a spirited woman of integrity and faith, debunking the simple stereotype of her as the Queen who failed to give Henry VIII a son. If you’d really like to get into the spirit of the occasion, they’re holding a Pottage and Ale Supper beforehand in the newly refurbished medieval Knights’ Chamber. There’ll be Tudor music, attendants in Tudor costume, Old Scarlett Ale, and a reserved seat for the lecture. Head to the cathedral website for more.

or the first time this year both the city centre lights switch on and Queensgate shopping centre’s lights will all be turned on the same day officially getting Peterborough set for Christmas.

Santa’s elves will be giving out 3,000 special Rudolf-wristbands in Cathedral Square from 4pm and each has a magic number. Grab a wristband and after the light switch on, head to Queensgate’s North Square where there’ll be more entertainment and the chance to win one of dozens of amazing prizes large and small. Santa will pick out the magic numbers and if it matches yours, you’ve won!

It’s all happening on Saturday November 19 with music and entertainment throughout the afternoon on Cathedral Square and then the big switch on happening at 5pm. The fun will be hosted by Heart FM and once the plunger goes down and Peterborough lights up there’ll be a festive burst of fireworks. The celebrations will then continue inside Queensgate Shopping Centre when the centre's lights are switched on and will include prizes and giveaways and the opening of Santa's grotto. Kev and Ros from Heart Breakfast told ESP – “We can’t wait to officially switch on Christmas in Peterborough. It was such a feel-good event

“We are extremely excited to be working with Peterborough City Council this year and supporting the city’s Christmas light switch on,” says Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre. “This is a wonderful event for the whole family to enjoy

and get into the festive spirit, plus win some amazing prizes.” Last year, Queensgate unveiled its stunning new Christmas lights and spectacular 30ft fairylit tree, which will be returning this year. Santa will then officially open his grotto in North Square (outside John Lewis) at 6pm. For all the grotto opening times see the back cover of this issue or visit www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk. Grotto tickets are available on arrival and tickets cost £5 per child (which includes a present). Photos are optional to purchase at the end. While you’re there why not pop by the information desk and pick up a tag from the Queensgate Gift Tree which is back in partnership with local charity, Spurgeons, to make sure children from families in need in Peterborough receive a gift this Christmas. It was a huge success last year with over 3,670 gifts donated and distributed via the Family Support Workers at Spurgeons and other agencies. VIVA LA ROCK ANNIVERSARY GIG I needed a quote from a friend of mine who lives in San Francisco to help write what you're about to read. Sending an email is way too conventional, so I decided to fly over and ride to his house in Petaluma on a gorgeous Triumph Bonneville. I’ve written about Viva previously, when a few years ago Graham Fairbairn staged a reunion at The Brewery Tap to raise money for charity. And the good news is Graham’s doing it again, this time on Saturday November 26 where proceeds go to the British Heart Foundation. Rewind 30 years and Antimo was tasked with promoting Viva and set about looking for a weekend DJ. He spotted Dave Allen playing at The Tropicana (another great club from back in the day) on Thursdays and explained to Dave he could play whatever he wanted if he would DJ at Viva.

Antimo Rivetti Ok, I was on holiday – and paying a visit to our former city resident and one-time manager of Curiosity Killed The Cat was on my California itinerary anyway!

Antimo told me: “Dave was a great weekend DJ and what made Viva all the more appealing was that we had two to three live bands playing every week from Tuesday onwards. It was an excellent venue for live bands and at the weekend it quickly became the place to be.

“Dave, who’s playing at the anniversary, was supported by Yan Basarab, Mark Goodliff, Rayan Gee and other guest DJ’s and Viva started to develop a big cult following. Before long the owners had to introduce a membership scheme and I remember people queuing down the block! But after only three years the city council wanted to develop the river area and Viva was forced to close, however, its influence and legacy live on.”

Back in the 80’s Woodston boy Antimo Rivetti (pictured sitting on my Bonnie) was a bit of a maverick entrepreneur. He was part of a ‘scheme team’ made up of the founders of Papa Luigi who together were the masters of promotion and PR. One of their successes was opening Viva La Rock nightclub in 1986 and this year marks the 30th anniversary of this legendary venue that stood on the edge of the river where Rivergate now is.

“It wasn’t the largest of venues but that added to the atmosphere. The owners, bar staff and doormen were all part of one big family and we were the envy of the town at a time when there were some very good clubs operating.” Antimo went on to remind me of the friendly doormen I remember so well (I was in my early teens and collected entry money behind a small table halfway up the stairs). I have memories of Graham’s brother Nigel keeping an eye over security and fellow boxer Lenny Gloucester too.

music, which were largely neglected by other clubs. He progressed to early house, techno and similar dance orientated music and his policy was if it had a good beat and sounded great it should be played.

Graham underlined what made Viva so special and told me: “Dave initially played Indie deep funk, rare groove, early hip hop and other genres of

I’ll always have special memories of Viva since it was owned by the family business. But for Antimo it marked the start of the happiest chapter in his life when he met his wife Frances there on a Thursday night. She came to see her brother play in a band and the rest as they say is history. Coowner Tony Scibelli also met his wife Tracy at the venue. Today, Antimo lives in a beautiful part of sunny California where he makes his own wine, which I can vouch for as being top drawer. He’s now a busy real estate wizard but always makes time to reconnect with his Peterborough roots. Antimo’s due a visit before the end of the year, wouldn’t it be great if he could make the anniversary bash…

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

CHRISTMAS

Let's face it, we might as well not have Halloween, Bonfire Night or anything else after September. From this point it's sadly all about Christmas. Do you love it as much as I do? Fat, freezing, Bing Crosby, office romp, Toy Story (again), soggy veg, family feuds, cold gear knob, acid reflux, overly happy people, overdraft, rip-off fuel bills (try Peterborough Energy), cheap crackers, vegetarians, excessive food shopping and the annoying: "Are you ready for Christmas?" question.

Cask Mark Accredited, Guiness Accredited and 5* hygiene rated. It is also the home of the Soul Lounge on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month.

Check out my hair... I was experimenting with the newborn look.... Anyway, I can't remember the year (maybe 1999?) but I do remember it being the one and only time I've been chatted up by a man. Boy George went down a storm in 5th Avenue that night but afterwards he was more interested in me than my excellent interview questions. Reflecting on the experience I guess I feel quite honoured but what I should’ve done was sold my story to The Sun!

NEW ATTRACTIONS AT THE CATHEDRAL We’re all guilty of it. Rushing through town for lunch or shopping and failing to really appreciate the amazing building towering over us. Maybe it’s time to make like a tourist and stop and take a look at our iconic building with fresh eyes! Pop into the new Visitor Centre Monday to Saturday, 10am - 5pm or Sundays, 11am - 4pm. It’s free admission but donations are welcome.

SANTA AND LADIES NIGHT @ DOBBIES

P

eterborough Cathedral dominates the city centre and is a huge tourist attraction that’s just gained even more of a pull with the launch of the new Cathedral Visitor Centre. Hundreds of people have already visited and there are plenty more events of interest lined up at this landmark over the coming weeks.

Photo: Chris Brudenell

New this month is the chance to view the city’s fireworks displays from the top of the tower and a fantastic exhibition of photos of the building by local photographers which you can vote for.

Santa’s a busy guy and pulls up at Dobbies in Hampton on Sunday November 20. There'll be a magical Christmas parade and plenty of fun kid's activities.

Photo: Matthew Roberts

There’s also a changing programme of exhibitions inside and from November 24 to January 6 it’ll feature photographs shortlisted in the Peterborough Cathedral at Night photography competition and you can vote for your favourites.

Once Santa's made his grand entrance he'll be taking up residence in his grotto instore. On that day visits will be on a limited first come, first served basis but you can book in advance. The grotto will be open for visitors from Monday November 21 – Saturday December 24.

But first – let’s talk the new Cathedral Visitor Centre. This latest attraction has been brought to life with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Step inside this free exhibition and you’ll discover some of the characters and stories from the Cathedral's amazing 1300 year history. It has a timeline showing priceless artefacts from AngloSaxon times to the present day, as well as handson exhibits, a digital touch-table and an audio presentation. There are lots of fresh ideas to get local people to engage more with the Cathedral and one of our favourites is the new Bonfire Night Rooftop Tour, on Saturday November 5 at 7pm. What a great way to see the city’s fireworks and then back at ground level, enjoy mulled wine and seasonal treats in the Cathedral. You’ll need to book though, so head to the Cathedral website.

Amongst the priceless artefacts on show is the original letter from King James I, written in 1613, requiring the mortal remains of his mother, Mary Queen of Scots, to be removed from Peterborough to Westminster Abbey.

16

www.espmag.co.uk

Music in the Cathedral is always magical and the Concert for Peace and Reconciliation on Saturday November 12 will bring us a moving programme of choral music performed by the Peterborough Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir and Festival Chorus. www.peterboroughcathedral.org.uk

Once Santa’s installed it’s then time to get ready for Ladies Night on Thursday December 1 for an evening jam-packed with live music, entertainment, beauty treatments, special offers and more, all in the name of a good cause. Between 5pm and 9pm they’ll welcome you through the doors with a glass of fizz and some delicious canapés before you make the most of their pamper sessions and beauty treatments. Tickets are just £1 each with all ticket proceeds going directly to their Christmas charity partner, Teenage Cancer Trust. Meaning you can do your bit while also indulging in a little Christmas treat at the same time! To find out more visit www.dobbies.com/whats-on

Food Glori us Food NEW MENU LAUNCHES AT LOCH FYNE A change of season brings us a delicious new menu to sample over at Loch Fyne in Elton. The new autumn/winter menu has a great selection of dishes with tastes from around the world we can’t wait to try. Renowned for its fabulous fish dishes the restaurant’s introducing even more with a twist such as a Hawaian sushi bowl, known as a Poke bowl

and king prawn or octopus tacos for starters. While for mains why not try their Portuguese fish stew or a soft shell crab pakora burger. Loch Fyne is always a glorious setting in the summer but don’t think this venue is simply for the warmer evenings, it’s equally welcoming and cosy throughout the colder months and the new menu includes some great winter warmers. Tempting smoked haddock scotch egg, a tuna steak melt and half roast chicken with roasted chorizo and French fries should warm you up in no time.

Don’t worry though, many of your favourites remain on the menu too, such as the tequila an lime oysters, chilli an garlic king prawns, smoked haddock and cod Malabar curry. The Christmas menu looks pretty tempting too if you’re looking for somewhere different for your festive dining. Three courses for just £23.95 should leave you with a few pennies to spare for a tipple or two to make merry as well! Book now on 01832 280298.

BA SHOH IS A HIT ON BROADWAY From the mains section I ordered the Railway Lamb Curry, which was juicy chunks of lamb cooked with potatoes, flavoured with garam masala and pepper. I followed this with the Karahi Chicken – Chicken Tikka cooked with fresh tomatoes, ginger, onions and fresh green chillies to give medium heat. I love nothing more than a good Indian restaurant meal out with the lads. The problem is, with so many different spices and flavours to choose from, it can take me a while to place my order. Thankfully, during a recent visit to Ba Shoh (formerly Imperial Bento on Broadway) I was lucky enough to be given a few different dishes to try. From the starter menu I ordered Royal Hara Chicken, which is served with pear and coconut chutney, spiced medallions of chicken breast marinated and cooked in a coating of green herbs. I also tucked into the Tawa Chilli Prawns served with coconut dip. Both starters were fresh and full of flavour.

The décor of the restaurant is modern and stylish, and the food here was authentic and quite simply delicious. In fact, it was the best curry I’ve had in a while. Complemented nicely with a full bar including a wide range of beers, wines and cocktails, I’ll definitely be returning with the lads. Mikey Clarke

PRÉVOST CELEBRATES MICHELIN LISTING It’s been on his hitlist for years and we suspect local chef Lee Clarke is still dancing around his kitchen at new restaurant Prévost after gaining a place in the coveted 2017 Michelin Guide. It’s more good news for Peterborough’s dining with The Beehive also gaining a listing. Prévost chef and owner Lee Clarke was delighted – “I’m over the moon that we’ve been listed in the Michelin Guide, and especially that it’s happened within just six months of opening.” Set in the former Flyers Club on Priestgate, Prévost offers innovative tasting menus ranging from three to nine courses, and all produce is sourced as locally as possible.

HARRY’S BAR CHRISTMAS PARTIES The newly launched Harry’s Bar Café (formerly The Lounge adjoining The Solstice) has had a full revamp and is offering everything from lunch to special afternoon teas and party menus. They’re now taking Christmas bookings with two menu options. They’re also holding a party night on December 17 for smaller parties who wish to join other local businesses with entry to The Solstice afterwards to keep the party going. There’s also a brand new food menu now available at The Solstice with an amazing range of dishes from just £4.50! Served Monday – Sunday, 11am – 9pm you can enjoy everything from chicken chorizo tagliatelle to fajitas, chilli to fish an chips or just a jacket potato or goujons.

SKiing

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as an agile skier gliding down a beautiful white powdery mountainside pulling some stylish moves as you traverse and shimmy along off-piste, then you’ll need to learn a few moves before tackling the big slopes. As with all skilled activities you’ve got to start somewhere and skiing can be a little trickier than those winter Olympians might make it look.

I

took the family to our local dryski slope at Tallington Lakes to make use of their impressive 100m slope and the smaller training slope to see how we could get on in our first crash course. I’d skied about 20 years ago up in sunny Scotland when I was a fresh-faced teen and was hoping I might still have some basic skills in the memory banks but this didn’t quite warrant skipping the beginner slope just yet. Ethan,

20

www.espmag.co.uk

Oonagh-Mae and Sarah had never skied at all so we all took to the training slope to start some basic moves and a few silly walks too. The lesson went really well for each of us, all giggling as we wobbled around but everyone took to it quickly as we moved higher up the slope each time to learn new moves and most importantly ‘how to stop’. After a few goes on the little slope I figured it would be a wasted opportunity not to go to the top of the main slope and weave my way down once the old ski-legs had remembered what to do. Luckily I nailed it and managed to look pretty composed and natural without taking a tumble so that was a relief. We had a really enjoyable session, our instructor was great and

helped each of us quickly get the basics covered so for our next session we can all take to the bigger slope and brave some longer runs.

Huge selection in the Pro Shop way of getting everyone ready for that holiday in the Alps.

“We had a really enjoyable session, our instructor was great and helped each of us...” These slopes are perfect for anything from a one-off bit of fun to ongoing private lessons or group sessions in preparation for a holiday on some snowy mountains somewhere. Prices for lessons and open sessions are surprisingly lower than I would’ve expected and a family season pass would certainly be a very cost effective

The Pro Shop has a huge selection of outfits, boots and all the kit you’d need for a full on skiing holiday as well as gear for so many other activities so is well worth a look around. We’re looking forward to the next visit and I’m pretty sure I’ll soon have the rest of the gang going from the top of the big slope in no time.

Maroon shades, navy, grey and autumn colours teamed with neutrals are all strong again this year and the check shirt will be a

wardrobe staple. Floral patterns remain as strong as ever but have gone darker for the new season so add a splash of colour with a scarf. Colder days are perfect to rock a Fair Isle style pattern so whether it’s a beanie or a jumper, for guys or girls, layer up and look festively fab! www.espmag.co.uk

paparazzi Caught in the act? THE SUE RYDER THORPE HALL 25TH ANNIVERSARY BALL An evening of style and sophistication awaited guests celebrating 25 years of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. The James Bond-themed ball, Licence to Thrill, saw over 330 guests greeted by a fleet of Aston Martins and two of the latest Maserati cars. It was a real red carpet event and as the iconic Bond theme played, a white searchlight lit the front of the mansion house. Inside each table was themed around a different Bond film, 007 actor or memorable character and Peterborough's former X Factor contestant, Nicole Lawrence, sang great renditions of Diamonds are Forever and Goldfinger. A fabulous auction raised even more money for the Hospice. Chris Lowndes and ACS Photography were on Paparazzi duties for the night. You can view all our Paparazzi pics on Facebook.

The trademark blonde quiff is back along with the powerhouse vocals as Emeli Sandé returns to hail Long Live The Angels with her new album…

T

o celebrate the release of her single Hurts and her great new album, Emeli has just performed her most intimate shows in years performing in Glasgow, her hometown of Aberdeen, Manchester and then culminating at London’s beautifully iconic St John at Hackney. Emeli says, “I really wanted to reconnect with my fans on an intimate level, it's been a really long time, so much has happened and these small shows felt like the perfect way to catch up.” This second album Long Live The Angels comes out on November 11 and marks a brand new chapter in her life, “I’m proud of my first album and thankful for the experiences it gave me, but I’m so much happier with my new album and with where I am in life.” It’s hard to believe it’s four years since the resounding success of her critically acclaimed number one record, Our Version Of Events and a lot’s happened in that time. She broke chart records, awards came thick and fast and of course there was her spellbinding performance at the London 2012 Olympics ceremony. Her debut album Our Version Of Events was not only the biggest selling album of 2012 and second biggest selling album of 2013, but it was also certified 7x platinum, spent seven non-consecutive weeks at No.1 and exceeded The Beatles' previous record by spending 63 consecutive weeks in the top 10 and selling over 4.6 million copies worldwide.

As 2013 came to a close, it’s no surprise that the singer/songwriter was exhausted and unable to ignore the strain it was putting on a number of close relationships, “Sounds a bit dramatic but I just wanted to disappear. I just had this overwhelming sensation and realisation everything had to stop,” she reflects, “And then slowly it did.” Now, she’s let go and opened up, and she’s come out stronger than ever, “In retrospect, I was like a pressure cooker waiting to pop off. I had to stop and really look at myself and realise who I was. That’s been the biggest lesson for me, learning to feel comfortable in who I am and what I represent and what I stand for.” There’s a huge sense of new-found freedom which comes over strongly in the album and is clear in the single Hurts, an uplifting ballad brimming with heart and soul. “I wanted to release Hurts first because it felt like everything I’d avoided saying for so long,” says Sandé. “It’s a real explosion. It’s everything I wish I’d said years and years ago. I didn’t want to hold anything back anymore.” Emeli premiered the track on Radio 1’s Live Lounge, alongside a reworked version of Heaven, No.1 single, Read All About It as well as a stunning cover of Rihanna’s Four Five Seconds. “This entire album is about me not holding back and not censoring myself, and Hurts is an explosion, it’s just…real talk,” explains Emeli. “I made sure the production wasn’t overworked,” Emeli points out. “And I really went for it vocally!”

After the success of Interstellar and The Martian over the past two years this sci-fi adventure from the acclaimed director of Sicario (my favourite film of last year) and Prisoners fills the same coveted slot, hoping for the same kind of out of this world attention. BAD SANTA 2

Downtrodden Santa Willie Soke (Billy Bob Thornton) returns after a 13-year hiatus to star in a sequel to the hilarious dark comedy from the director of Mean Girls. Fuelled by the usual cheap whiskey, greed and hatred for everyday life, the Father Christmas-for-hire teams up again

with pint-sized out of jail sidekick Marcus (Tony Cox), alongside a now grown-up Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly, who starred as the loveable kid from the first movie) and Kathy Bates as Willie’s mother, as they aim to knock-off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve.

GEARS OF WAR 4 (X1/PC) Familiarity sometimes breeds contempt – but here familiarity is glorious. Marcus Fenix is back – along with his son, JD, and his friends Kait and Del – as this semi-reboot of the illustrious Gears franchise gets a glossy new coat for the Xbox One generation, offering up a thirdperson cover-based shooter in its finest form, with scintillating gaming set-pieces that are worthy of the name.

#####

This time it’s a rescue-based adventure mainly centred around JD, as they attempt to save their loved ones and discover a monstrous new enemy to boot, complete with expanded Gears mechanics that includes an improved multiplayer experience and two-player co-op that’s simply breathtaking. It might not quite be the revolution that some were hoping for – but it’s undoubtedly a revolution for the acclaimed series.

NBA 2K17 (PS4/X1/PS3/360)

How do you improve on basketball perfection? By just tinkering with it. This year’s iteration of the finest NBA game on the planet doesn’t offer much that’s different to the sensational versions that have come before – bar some exceptional customisation options – but it just feels that much more sensationally tweaked.

#####

This can be seen particularly when shooting from ‘downtown’ with the likes of Warriors’ star Steph Curry and LA Clippers’ JJ Redick (who I’ve seen do it in real life in his Orlando Magic days) as this satisfyingly offers more of the same, but in a truly fantastic way.

Just like LeBron James did with the Cavs last season – as Cleveland claimed their first championship – this provides an awe-inspiring slam dunk.

FIFA 17

(X1/PS4/360/PS3/PC) After years of ruling the roost this may have lost its footballing crown to PES – but still offers an all-round licensed package that will appeal to the masses. This year it changes things up by focusing on ‘The Journey’, a story mode that hones in on a youngster trying to make it in the Premier League – which offers up something refreshingly different – but the main game hasn’t really had enough improvements to change its identity in the obvious areas.

While it still provides enough to appease most FIFA die-hards, it might have to get back to basics on the pitch instead of focusing on (albeit worthy) modes, but as it stands this still hits the back of the net – if this year just in off the post.

NEW BOOK REUNITES LOCAL PHOTO STARS Here at ESP we’ve long been supporters of photographer Chris Porsz ‘the paramedic paparazzo’ who’s spent years capturing the social history of Peterborough through his pictures. Chris told ESP – “After nearly 40 years in the making it will be wonderful to finally fulfil my dream of publishing Reunions. I have had many set backs but it has been a true labour of love.” This amazing book will soon be available from the Visitor Information Centre and Waterstones on Bridge Street as well as Chris’ website. We can’t wait to see it, so not to spoil the surprise here’s a tantalising glimpse of ‘then’ and you’ll see the ‘now’ images in our next issue. See how they’ve changed!

H Photos: Chris Porsz

is first book, New England, featured many of these images and he’s now about to release his second book which has seen him reunite many of the people who appeared in his original images back from the late 70s onwards. Chris has managed to track down many of the strangers he randomly photographed and has achieved over 135 reunions and staged them again in the same locations.

You can't avoid danger if you don't see it coming. Play it safe. Be ready for any weather, any time with proper wiper blade maintenance.

Wet roads increase braking distance, giving you less time to react to danger on the road. Make sure yours don’t let you down.

Check your tyres to make sure you have the correct tread for the weather conditions and plenty of grip.

• Chattering or streaking wipers indicate that replacement is necessary • Always replace wipers in pairs

• Replace wipers at least every six months or as needed

Don't forget the rear wiper! Rear wipers can deteriorate just as quickly and are just as important.

The components of hydraulic braking systems are subject to considerable stress and as a result require frequent inspection and routine maintenance. It’s recommended to have your brake fluid changed every 2 years regardless of the vehicle age.

The legal requirement for minimum tread depth on your tyres is 1.6milimetres, across the central 3/4 of the tyre around the complete circumference of the tyre. For safety – replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached.

POWER ON... The cold and wet can play havoc with your battery so make sure it won’t let you down. FRM will check your current car battery for FREE and recycle your old one. We have a large range, type, voltage and guarantees on car batteries.

AIR CONDITIONING... Aircon isn’t just for the summer and FRM are air conditioning specialists, installing, repairing and re-charging. Being Italian, a love of Maserati is in my DNA. So when Marshall Maserati in Peterborough invited us along to celebrate their second anniversary I could’ve cried… because I was in Italy of all places!

ESP Sales Manager, Emma Suckow, behind the wheel So in my (ill-timed) absence the arduous task fell to ESP’s Emma Suckow to be treated to a look-see at their gorgeous range of luxury vehicles.

Needless to say she didn’t need asking twice and with the promise of a test drive our team were at Marshalls in no time. I got the run down later when Emma told me: “I went out on a thrilling road trip in a Quattroporte luxury saloon to Huntingdon to test out its capabilities and road handling. I’ve never driven anything quite like it so it was a real treat (sorry Pep!). It was spacious, handled well and had brilliant performance as you’d expect. The stylish luxury interior is

impressive and of course it has those Italian good looks.” I had to stop Emma there as she was starting to rub it in... I'll have my revenge! Since Marshall Motor Group established the franchise for the legendary Italian car brand at Tyrell Park, Peterborough, in September 2014 the dealership has proved it has real pulling power. Luxury might be the key word here but more and more customers seem to be having their head turned and since it opened, Marshall Maserati has delivered 360 new and pre-owned cars.

The current Maserati model range includes the Quattroporte luxury saloon, GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible, but the most popular model sold at the dealership has been the Ghiblisports saloon, specifically the 275 hp3.0-litre V6 diesel. Much of this is down to its compelling value which has given many new customers the opportunity to venture into luxury motoring.

WHAT’S YOUR PRIDE AND JOY? I love my wheels, both four wheeled and two, and I love to see what other people’s pride and joy looks like. It’s testament to the quality of our team here in Peterborough and the exceptional cars we sell that the Maserati brand is going from strength to strength in the East of England.”

The guys at FRM tell me they’ll maintain all the great things about the company now they’ve taken over and also have some exciting plans for the future. Customer service is all important to them so you shouldn’t need to do battle about quotations, schedules and work carried out or be pushed for anything you don’t actually need! They have close links with all of the main dealer networks and

Encouragingly over 1,000 customers also take their car to Marshall Maserati for service, repair and maintenance. MATRIx ExpERTs DRop IN AT BARkERs We all do it. Spend loads on top brand make-up or designer gear but then when it comes to buying a decent shampoo we decline and head off to the bargain shelf at Savers! So when the Matrix Hair Care experts came to local salon supplier Barkers, I headed down to find out what makes the professional salon brands a better buy.

It’s great for use before a night out to give you that salon looking styled hair. Plus it smells amazing!

Founded in 1980 by the American hairdresser, Arnie Miller, Matrix services community salons with a diverse range of hair care, colour, style and texturising products as well as unique in-salon treatments and services that provide solutions for every hair type. I went along on a fact finding mission for ESP magazine, and to see which new products are being used in our local salons this autumn/winter. I even got to try a few out, so here’s my verdict.

Next up was their Mineral Hair Mess Maker. Fortified with micro-minerals and Vitamin E, the lightweight, saltinfused spray leaves hair with that great tousled and textured look – with ocean vibes. Creating definition but still light on your hair, the salt spray can be scrunched onto damp or dry hair to add body and movement for animated, natural-looking waves without stiffness or crunchiness. I used this by spraying it onto damp hair then blow drying it for the best crumpled look.

The Oil Wonders Volume Rose collection is amazing for ladies with fine hair who want a bit more volume and oomph. It comes in shampoos, conditioners and mousse. The best news is, it can also decrease the time it takes to blow-dry your hair by half (yes, really!) I took the mousse home to try. For supple volume, apply a golf ball size of Volume Rose Plumping Mousse from roots to ends. I then dried my hair and styled as I usually would. And guess what, it works.

Ask your local salon if they use Matrix and see if they’re trying out these great new products too. If not, pop down to Barkers and pick them up to try at home for a salon worthy finish every day!

FEELING RADIANT WITH VIVACITY

Vivacity Premier Fitness at Hampton is a great little gym, but did you know they have a beauty salon inside that anyone – members or non-members – can go and use. I went along to see the lovely team there this month for a facial treatment and a tour of their facilities. The treatment rooms are very relaxing and you wouldn’t know you were in the immediate vicinity of the gym just yards away. My fabulous facial lasted for an hour and the girls even gave me a ‘skin map’ which highlighted the different textures and issues on parts of my face under a special light – they then gave me a copy of my map with details of products I can use going forward. After the facial my skin was silky soft for days and cleansed to perfection. They use Dermalogica UK products which suit all skin types and are made for a luxury experience. Remember, you don’t need to be a member to go, so get yourself a treat booked in before the Christmas rush. They have some great special offers coming up next month: December Offers 25% off all waxing £15 for spray tan £30 for gel manicure and pedicure £15 eyelash tint, eyebrow wax and brow lash and tint

DON’T FORGET IT’S MOVEMBER! Chaps listen up… it’s that time of year again. A time where you can proudly grow a beard or moustache without being accused of being scruffy or lazy. Movember is challenging you to grow a beard or moustache for 30 days and raise awareness and money towards Men’s Health. Take a look at their website where you can also sign up for the challenge officially and find out some fundraising tips (such as, my favourite, giving your highest donor the chance to pick what colour to dye your new ’tache or beard!) https://uk.movember.com/

AN EMPORIUM OF BEAUTY AND GIFTS Boots Emporium has made Christmas a piece of cake for us this year – I went along to the opening of the Queensgate Emporium to see what was going on. You head up to the first floor, usually a haven for all the Christmas gifts. This year, you’ll be met with a beauty paradise. A beautifully laid out make up trial counter and products galore to try and personalise. Here’s the deal – you can buy products such as compact mirrors to perfume and have the person’s name you’re buying it for added to the actual product so it’s personal to them. Or why not go one step further and have their photo added to a product such as a bubble bath for a good giggle on Christmas day. My favourite though was the large range of eye shadows, blushers and other products which you can mix and match into your very own personalised colour pallets to suit you! Make sure you visit the Emporium on your next shopping trip to see for yourself.

GLORIA’S CHARITY CHAT Gloria Hunniford (of BBC fame) came to the Holiday Inn Peterborough recently to speak at a charity ladies lunch raising funds and awareness for the Breast Cancer Unit at Peterborough City Hospital. It was a privilege to hear Gloria speak about her time in broadcasting and her daughter’s own personal battle with Cancer. It was such a lovely and well supported event hosted by Heart FM’s Kev Lawrence with over 300 ladies attending and with glorious singing from our friend Nicole Lawrence. Over £10,000 was raised so well done to Carol Collier and her supporting team for a great event.

LUSH ARE GETTING IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT Some of us might think it’s still too early to be thinking about Christmas products, but Lush have had an absolutely cracking idea for a way to brighten up a Christmas stocking this year I wanted to share with you. Check out the Father Christmas and Christmas pudding bath bombs, at £3.75 and £3.50 – a way to bring Christmas to the bathroom!

BEING

NO REGRETS, THEY DON’T WORK… TIME TO LIVE LIFE YOUR WAY! 4. I wish I’d stayed in touch with my friends. Often they wouldn’t truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their last few weeks and it wasn’t always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they’d let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved.

O

ver the years I’ve had the privilege of working with many clients either on a one-to-one basis or in groups at transformational detox retreats. Recently it’s become evident that many people are feeling life’s not all that it could be and that it’s going by so quickly, yet there’s so much to be experienced. Some of life’s biggest questions such as ‘who am I or what is my purpose, what makes me happy?’ are being asked, especially when faced with challenges like losing your job, a relationship breakdown, death of a loved one, a health issue or just living in times of great uncertainty as we are now. When we recover from any of these challenges we may look back and say ‘that was the best thing that ever happened to me’ as we find ourselves in a more loving harmonious relationship, or we finally find a career that best expresses who we truly are or we regain our health. We may find as we get older when looking back over our lives we wished we had stepped out of the comfort zone we’ve been dozing in for years. I recently spotted an article written by author Bronnie Ware who was a palliative care nurse for years who wrote about the clarity of vision many people gained at the end of their lives. She kept notes which developed into a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. Now I know it’s not the cheeriest of topics but bear with me! We can acknowledge regrets at any time

38

www.espmag.co.uk

in our life and the regrets Bronnie recorded are a common thread which might just resonate with you now…

TOP FIVE REGRETS 1. I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. This was the most common regret of all. Looking back it was easy to see how many dreams had gone unfulfilled, most hadn’t honoured even a half of their dreams. It’s important to try and honour at least some of your dreams throughout your life. 2. I wish I didn’t work so hard. This came from every male patient she nursed; they missed

their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret but many were from an older generation and hadn’t been breadwinners, many of the men she nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the work treadmill. By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it’s possible to not need the income that you think you do, and by creating more space in your life you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle. 3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings. Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result. We can’t control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life.

It’s common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you’re faced with the end, the physical details of life fall away. People want to get their financial affairs in order if possible, but it isn’t money or status that holds the true importance for them. It comes down to love and relationships in the end. 5. I wish that I’d let myself be happier. This is a surprisingly common one. Many didn’t realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They’d stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to themselves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again. When you’re at the end, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. Life is a choice, it is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly, choose happiness. One of my favourite quotes which seems fitting… ‘I tried being normal but I didn’t like it so I went back to being me!’ In Health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

Caught in the act? They trained hard, you cheered hard and the fun runners donned their fancy dress and raised thousands. It was, once again, a truly ‘great’ Eastern Run! This year’s event on The Embankment saw the Perkins Great Eastern Run have the highest turnout of runners in the race’s history. A total of 4,262 runners ran the half marathon and 1,257 people took part in the Anna’s Hope Fun Run. Entries for both the half marathon (5,224) and fun run (1,398) also eclipsed the previous highest totals recorded in 2013. Whilst the elite Kenyan runners took the winning honours in the half marathon there was local success for Eye Community Runners and Nene Valley Harriers who saw first boy and girl across the line in the Anna’s Hope Fun Run with Isaac Ellwood (15) and Ella Robinson (13) respectively. At one stage during the event more than 10,000 people were on The Embankment as runners crossed the finish line to cheers from a fantastic number of supporters and spectators. Our guy capturing the action was photographer Mike Harris – you can view all of our photos on our Facebook page.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

(Left to Right) Charlie Lee, Tom Williams and Aaron Mclean

I was approached at the football club by family members and people close to Paul McCann, the 32-year-old who lost his life following the Great Eastern Run in the city centre at the beginning of October about the possibility of organising a tribute at the fixture. Paul was well known on the local football scene and was also a keen supporter of the Posh so we planned a minute’s applause in the 32nd minute to honour his memory. A few days of media interviews and fantastic co-

Ahead of that game, we were able to introduce a number of former players to the crowd and I personally think that is wonderful. It demonstrates the love the fans have for those that have worn the blue shirt down the years, but also the existing relationship that the club has with those players when they depart the ABAX. Charlie Lee, Aaron Mclean, Tommy Williams, Chris Plummer, Worrell Sterling, Trevor Quow, Noel Luke and Tommy Robson all got a brilliant

“Paul was well known on the local football scene and was also a keen supporter of the Posh...” Last month saw a renewal of the rivalry between Peterborough United and Northampton Town as the two sides met for the first time in eight years at the ABAX Stadium. Grant McCann’s men ran out comfortable 3-0 winners in the end, but the night was a perfect example of how bigger events can unite a set of supporters. 42

operation from Northampton Town allowed the message to be spread and when the clock ticked over to the minute in question, over 9,000 fans united as one to ‘clap for Paul’. That rapturous applause was participated in by Posh fans and Northampton fans, who put their rivalry aside to provide a fitting tribute. On behalf of the family, and on behalf of the football club, I’d like to thank everyone who joined in – we have had a number of thank you’s from those that were close to Paul.

reception from the huge crowd inside the stadium and all of them thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In next month’s edition of ESP Magazine, I’ll be talking more about the Schools Programme that we’ve put together to try and encourage more youngsters to come to the ABAX. It’s an exciting time and we really hope that the people of Peterborough get behind Grant and his team as we approach a busy time in the fixture calendar. Phil

NEW BAR PUZZLES ON ITS WAY?

DOUBLE THE GROOVES @ THE BREWERY TAP

There could soon be a new bar on the Bridge Street scene. Puzzles have put in a council application for the site that has recently been used temporarily as a Learning Centre.

The Brewery Tap continues to give us a great night out with a relaxed vibe and if you like your tunes they’re getting their groove on a little more often this month as party season kicks in.

The guys behind it tell us if all goes ahead it’ll be a casual bar, built on over 15 years experience in the trade and in Peterborough’s own market.

Throughout November Saturday night’s resident DJ Rick Allen will be getting the dancefloor lively on both Fridays and Saturdays.

Matt Murphy from Puzzles told us – “We’ve been working hard to build something that fits in with Peterborough’s growing trend for restaurants and bars around the Cathedral Square area, but also provides a brand new drinking experience that the city hasn’t seen before.”

Get ready to party at Friday Night Groove on November 4 and Saturday Night Groove on November 5 with Rick from 9pm.

We’ll keep you posted so watch this space.

Then on Friday November 11 local legend Eddie Nash is the guest DJ with Rick returning to the decks on Saturday November 12. Eddie’s back again on Friday November 18 with Rick filling the Saturday slot on November 19 then it’s Eddie’s turn to pull a weekend shift on Saturday November 26.

O’NEILLS SERVES UP THE DJ AND DRINKS DEALS Why wait ‘til the weekend for a night out when O’Neills on Broadway bring you Wacky Wednesday with a DJ from 9.30pm playing all your favourite songs and great drinks deals you wouldn't want to miss! The drinks deals continue with their brand new cocktail range two for £6.50 between 5pm and 8pm Monday to Friday – sounds good to us! Friday night it’s time to party. Bombs away with two for £5.50 jäger, skittle, glitter and haggis bombs (Jäger and Irn Bru) and their DJ bringing you all the best music, from R'n'B to charts, from cheese to the bangers you forgot. See you on the dancefloor!

60's and Northern Soul, Latin, ska and vintage reggae to Hammond/jazz grooves.

Peterborough DJ Jules and the team are always bringing a different flavour to the city’s nightlife scene and we’re pleased to see the guys return with The Jelly Roll this month.

Julian tells us it attracts a mixed crowd – “It has a great vibe and atmosphere. People are friendly, knowledgeable on music and clothes, but not taking things too seriously. Well dressed and welcoming of newcomers. We have locals and people travelling regularly from the likes of Nottingham, London, Coventry, Cambridge, Northampton and further afield. The majority are in the 30-50 age bracket as you’d imagine, but we have a number of young guns coming through the doors who are looking for something different to the norm.”

Catch them at The Burghley Club on Saturday November 12 from 8pm – 2am spinning everything on vinyl from 50's/60's rhythm and blues,

DJs on the night include Ali Bongo Goby, Russ Holby, Oxford Paul, Jon Godden, Glen McCully and Paul D and admission’s just a fiver.

BILLY'S ARENA GIG & WHY WE NEED THE BROADWAY steve.gonzalez@espmag.co.uk

Following the success of Bill Bailey over the summer, Peterborough Arena has announced details of two other big comedy shows. First up this month is Billy Connolly (voted best comedian of all time by Channel 4) who’s appearing here on Friday November 25. Then next year we can look forward to John Bishop who'll be performing two shows at the venue on November 22 and 23 2017.

It's been encouraging to see people actively try and find a solution. First of all with a petition set up by local man Barry Warne. Barry's better known for his athletic prowess as part of Nene Valley Harriers but his petition ran up over 1,200 signatures over the summer. Barry described the venue as "a sparkling jewel in Peterborough's crown" and told me – "Peterborough needs The Broadway Theatre, it does not need more flats. The Broadway is good enough for Bill Kenwright to use for his legendary productions, and is a massive asset to the city. The theatre must remain as an entertainment venue." The Theatres Trust has also been taking an active interest and liaising with Peterborough City Council. The Trust added the Broadway to its list of theatres most at risk and has worked with other cities to help save similar venues under threat so let's hope they can help on this one.

This is great news for fans of live comedy and shows we have a venue that can attract the biggest names in comedy. Aside from starring in numerous films and TV series, Billy’s toured worldwide continuously for the last 50 years, performing to an audience of over 10,000,000 and now this is our chance to catch him live. Support these gigs folks and more will follow! So from one venue on the up, to another facing an uncertain future. The Broadway Theatre is, at the time of me writing this, either potentially being sold and turned into flats or being saved and kept as a theatre. Every day seems to be bring a new chapter to what is or isn't happening with it, but it will be a sad day for the city if we lose this iconic building.

Next year, will be 80 years since the building was first opened as the Odeon cinema. Designed by architect Harry Weedon (who also designed the legendary Leicester Square Odeon in London). At the time the only building in Peterborough city centre that was bigger was the Cathedral... and I know which place I worshipped in more as a kid! I was there for Star Wars, Back to the Future, four of the Bond films and then when it became a theatre there were some epic nights of laughter. Russell Brand, Al Murray, Dara O'Briain, Jimmy Carr, The Mighty Boosh, Al Murray, Harry Hill, Frank Skinner, Paul Merton and Ben Elton. This is where Ardal O'Hanlon led the audience into a mass sing along of My Lovely Horse. This is where Rob Brydon had an imaginary light saber fight with Warwick Davis, where Mitchell and Webb did their Numberwang sketch. (It's also where I might be chaining myself to the doors of the building with Barry Warne next month if it gets sold for flats.)

MITCH BENN

“I’m a skeptic. But don’t take my word for it. Or indeed anybody’s. For anything…” and this is the basic premise of Mitch’s new critically acclaimed show. It’ll make you laugh a lot and think a bit as well as Mitch debunks myths, exposes nonsense and grapples with the very nature of knowledge itself. Catch him at Stamford Arts Centre, tickets are £14 on 01780 763203.

MUSICALITY GIG BRINGS TOP NAMES TO THE CITY

My attempt at photo bombing! I have to say congratulations to Colin 'Citizen' Smith and choreographer/dancer Monique Benoiton who got married a few weeks ago. With such a talented couple it was the live music 'wedding of the year'!

I’ve got to applaud local lad James Ellis who’s pulled together some famous names for a big gig at Peterborough Arena in aid of local charities.

At both the wedding reception and the stag do the guests included a veritable who's who of local musicians, singers and dancers. The Airwaves provided some superb music at the reception and they were joined by a number of guests as the evening went on.

James has entirely masterminded the Musicality event on Friday November 4 which will see B.O.B, Jay Sean, Scouting for Girls and Toploader take to the stage!

It was a fitting evening for a lovely couple.

FAT CHANTZ CHRISTMAS BASH The guys from local band Fat Chantz have been on to tell me about their latest gig which sounds just the night out you need to get you in the festive spirit. If you're looking for a pre-Christmas night out with live music and very reasonable bar prices then Fat Chantz's Christmas bash should fit the bill. The show on Friday November 25 will feature three live bands playing very different styles of music. The line up includes the popular Pennyless the local four piece electric folk group, the Electric Warriors the well known live three piece band and of course Fat Chantz themselves a seven piece covers band so it certainly sounds like there’ll be something to suit all tastes. Tickets are £10 available from the Post Office Club or by calling Baz on 07765 484249.

www.espmag.co.uk

Not only that, Vernon Kay will be hosting the night and playing a live DJ set. James was inspired to pull the night together after a friend was injured and he felt he wanted to support several charities that are close to his heart.

James says – “Last year, aged 16, I went on rugby tour to South Africa. Whilst there, one of my friends suffered a life-changing injury. I decided I wanted to do something to help raise awareness for him and others suffering life-changing injuries/illnesses. "I had a dream, and this dream is coming true. Let's pull together, let's change lives. Let's bring thousands of people together at one place and at one time, to show our support. You will not forget this night, I promise.” He’s chosen the charities Anna’s Hope, #teamgeorge, the Injured Jockey’s Fund and the Matt Hampson Foundation and all the proceeds from this fantastic gig will be split between them. James has put in all the time and effort to bring this concert together and it just shows what can be achieved with the right will. For a young guy like James to initiate such an event we should be proud and support his ambitions. For tickets visit www.musicalityevents.com

KINGS CLIFFE LADS FENECH-SOLER ARE BACK! While previous releases have seen them collaborate with the likes of Galantis, Starsmith and Tim Goldsworthy, this Kaleidoscope EP is confidently selfproduced.

It’s always good to see local talent doing well and hearing local lads Fenech-Soler on Huw Stephens’ Radio 1 show recently was a treat. The guys, who hail from Kings Cliffe, have returned with the four-track Kaleidoscope EP, their first new material since 2013 which is out this month. Now a duo comprising brothers Ben and Ross Duffy following the amicable departure of Andrew Lindsay and Daniel Soler, FenechSoler are back with a brighter, bolder and more eclectic sound.

Fenech-Soler have released two albums, their self-titled 2010 debut and the 2013 follow-up Rituals, and headlined gigs all over the world, including Shepherds Bush Empire on their last UK tour. Despite Ben being diagnosed with testicular cancer back in 2011 and having to have treatment, it’s been great to see him back fit and healthy, but also to see the band go on to do so well. They’ve toured with everyone from Kelis to Miike Snow to Robyn and been nominated for a Q Award – so if you’re in a band you can take inspiration from these local boys! www.fenechsoler.co.uk www.facebook.com/fenechsoler/ @fenechsoler
