Landlord of The Ploughman pub in Werrington – Andy Simmonds – has turned 40. I actually thought he was about 45 (just kidding Simmo). But more importantly he and his brother Stuart have been honoured by the city council with a Civic Award for their community involvement and charity work. Civic Awards recognise residents, groups, organisations and businesses that have made a real difference to the local community. The brothers received nominations to be

MY

I’m about to make my longawaited debut at The Pizza Parlour & Music Café in Cowgate. This restaurant brought back the traditional wood-fired pizza oven to Peterborough, after a spell of nearly 30 years of us being denied that true and unmistakable taste of a properly cooked pizza. Despite owner Pete Fierro feeding me a sample of the firstever pizza cooked in his oven the day before opening in September, I’ve yet to sit down and destroy a full serving. But that’s about to change because the Parlour has recently tweaked its offering and is now staying open for wine and cocktails after the kitchen closes at 10pm. This means diners can enjoy a drink in its unique retro sixties atmosphere well into the evening. Natasha Fierro told me: “People are enjoying the atmosphere of our restaurant, particularly towards the end of the week, and like to take time over another glass of wine or a cocktail. In response to this on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings when our kitchen has closed for the night, we clear the tables, dim the lights and transform the restaurant into a wine and cocktail bar. “We already offer a fabulous selection of Italian wines available by the glass or bottle, some of which are imported from an independent vineyard in Benevento, south Italy. Add to this a great range of cocktails and comprehensive drinks menu and we have everything you need for a good night.” And if you fancy a few nibbles to help the wine go down, the guys also offer small plates – spuntino – Italy’s equivalent of Spanish tapas. To book a table, call: 01733 902233.

considered for the award as recognition for their continuous efforts and achievements over the years. The lads are popular members of their community and I can vouch for them knowing how to throw a charity party. I think Stuart might be just ever so slightly more popular than Andy though, because he owns a gorgeous 1978 Ford RS 2000 that we featured in our Wheels pages last October. Well done Simmo and Simmo – richly deserved!

The first Easter Big Quiz Eggstravaganza in aid of the Mayor's charities and Anna's Hope was won by Athene Communications. A big well done to the worthy winners... but a big cause for concern to my ESP colleagues who finished dangerously close to coming last. Their blushes were spared when the honour of propping up the leader board went to the Mayor's team, who I think played a tactical game when they realised the wooden spoon prize was actually two bottles of wine! I was a guest on the Anna's Hope team that finished in a respectable midtable position. Our focus was mainly on the delicious baked potatoes and nibbles we had to tuck into. For us it was more like a picnic than a quiz but it's the taking part that matters, right ESP? More importantly, the night raised £1,400 and the money was split down the middle for both causes.

CHOCOLATE Because didn’t we all celebrate the real meaning of Easter…? Mini Hollow Bunnies, Egg ‘N’ Spoon Chocolate, Caramel Egg, Buttons Chick, Daim Mini Filled Eggs, Golden Eggs, Twirl, Double Decker, Smarties, Yorkie, Milky Bar, Dairy Milk and even Marmite flavour eggs. God bless you Jesus.

Dragon Boat Cook-Out Italian Style?

My editor knows I don’t do water but mention food and my ears prick up. I’m not sure if she’s serious or not but apparently, she’s recommended me for the Dragon Boat Festival barbecue. I think that’s cook it, not eat it. So, I’ll be doing my very best Gino D’Acampo impression while the rest of you will be drinking lake water and having ‘fun’. The festival is supported

by ESP and Connect FM and this year the excitement and inter-company rivalry is building like never before. The action takes place at the rowing lake on Saturday June 10 and there are still places left to get a crew together to battle it out over the 200metre course. Each team races a minimum of three times and the boats come with all equipment provided, so no previous experience is needed. There’s also a host of bankside activity (including a BBQ) to entertain teams and spectators between races including a flypast by a Battle of Britain Dakota. Peterborough’s two Strictly Come Dancing winners will be appearing together for the first time for a charity evening at Peterborough Cathedral on Friday May 19 at 7pm. Louis Smith MBE and war veteran Lance Corporal Cassidy Little are special guests at Strictly Cathedral, which is in aid of the Mayor’s charities and the Peterborough 900 Campaign. It’s your chance to dance in the beautiful setting of the cathedral nave and be given some expert tuition (I’ll need it) by Tu Danse Studios. Louis and Cassidy will be mingling on the dance floor before taking questions about their experiences on one of TV’s biggest shows. The evening begins with a Prosecco reception, complemented by young musician performances from Peterborough Music Hub. Tu Danse tutors will then demonstrate how to perfect your waltz and cha-cha-cha technique before going wild with what you’ve learnt! There are also opportunities to try your hand at being a Strictly judge. Looking forward to the event, Louis told me: “Strictly has a huge following and I hope the show's Peterborough fans will come to this unique event, which is supporting important causes. I'm looking forward to meeting the city's quick footed residents and watching them glide across the cathedral nave!" You’re encouraged to dress up for the occasion, which means sequins and tuxedos are welcome, but for safety ladies are advised not to wear stiletto heels. Tickets for this unique opportunity are just £25 per person, which includes refreshments. To book online go to www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/143/section.aspx/ 142/strictly-cathedral You can buy tickets in person from the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street or call: 01733 452336.

Super Doughnut Saturdays at Balderston! The crew at BMW dealership Balderston Motorcycles are giving out free doughnuts on Saturdays in exchange for riders who bring in soup, coffee, teabags, drinking chocolate or even tins of corned beef and Spam. These donations go to the Peterborough Soup Kitchen, who last month served more than 5,000 teas, coffees and bowls of soup to more than 1,100 homeless and disadvantaged people of Peterborough. And while you’re in the showroom chomping on your doughnut it’s worth enquiring about the G310 R. This new rider-friendly model is a great bike for commuting or getting out and about at the weekend. It’s a S1000 R lookalike, so it’s sure to put a smile on your face. At only 313cc, it’ll get you 80mpg and it weighs just 160kg. Best of all, prices start from just £4,290! special is the excellent eclectic mix of cars it always seems to attract. Peterborough singer, and former JLS star Aston Merrygold is set to hit the charts again with a new solo track and tour. ESP’s Mikey Clarke is looking forward to a new era of success for our local hero… big things – which of course they did, with five UK number one hits and more than 6 million records sold in this country alone (not bad for our local lad). During these chats of ours on the radio, I’d often wonder if the former Jack Hunt School pupil would end up changing with the fame – developing an ego. Thankfully, numerous reports from fellow Peterborians who are still close to the singer, claim that he’s as grounded as ever – which is great to hear. He’s also remained a big advocate of his home town and even has a tattoo of the cathedral on his arm!

“Since JLS split up, Aston’s been busy working on his own new music.”

M

any years back – whilst working at Lite FM – I was able to secure a weekly radio interview with local Mikey Clarke singer Aston Merrygold, whilst he was on the X-Factor with his boy band, JLS. Despite the gruelling hours he and the others were putting into it, he always came across enthusiastic and appreciative of the opportunity of being on the popular TV show. It was clear that JLS would move on to 16 www.espmag.co.uk

Since JLS split up, Aston’s been busy working on his own new music. Last year Get Stupid (a great feel good track we loved) was his first solo release which went platinum and saw huge international success including a show-stopping performance on The Late Late Show with James Corden. That was followed by the Prince-inspired One Night in Paris, the upbeat Show Me, electro-pop smash l Ain’t Missing You and then Too Late, Aston’s foray into ballad territory. He released One Night in Paris in

January of this year and has followed that up with a track called Precious, which is available to buy right now! The uplifting vibe of Precious is reflected in the sunsoaked video, shot in California and directed by Damien Sandoval. Nostalgic 90’s vibes are distinct, whilst Aston oozes a contemporary ‘Fresh Prince’ quality in the colourful, feel-good visual. Precious is the lead track from Aston’s forthcoming Precious EP, which is a collection of brand new music. You may have heard him sing the song live on All Round to Mrs Brown’s in April? He starred on the show alongside former Great British Bake Off presenter Sue Perkins, Silent Witness actress Emilia Fox and dancer Ashley Banjo. The song was very well received by the audience, who also happened to be in hysterics as Mrs Brown threw her usual sexual/controversial comments towards Aston – who couldn’t keep a straight face. I can’t tell you the kind of comments said in a family friendly magazine such as ESP, so you’ll have to check it out for yourself online (Series 1, Episode 4). Aston’s now on tour with his debut solo show hitting Manchester on May 3 and Birmingham on May 4 with a sold-out London show on May 5. We’ve been dancing around the office to Precious – we love it! Let’s hope the song dominates the charts, with plenty more hits to come for our local hero. Read my interview with Aston on www.espmag.co.uk

The latest addition to the city’s dining out scene is housed in Queensgate Shopping Centre looking out across St John’s Square and will bring us the flavour of the Caribbean. The Turtle Bay team have recruited 50 new staff ready for the opening after some very special ‘auditions’ where the applicants were asked to get into the spirit of the Caribbean with various tasks including limbo dancing! 40 Years Down the Line

This June sees one of Peterborough's best loved local attractions, the Nene Valley Railway celebrate its 40th anniversary. ESP’s Marc Hernandez takes a look at what’s planned… “We still have working volunteers now who helped set it up 40 years ago, and the future and best interests of the railway are always at the heart of everything the volunteers and staff do. “We actively continue to recruit new volunteers as there’s always the need for more pairs of hands and expertise, and it’s a great way for newly retired people to fill some of their time, meet new friends and keep using their skills, but also for young people to learn new skills and experiences to add to their CVs. “The nostalgia of the heritage steam and diesel trains is a big draw to the public, it’s literally like stepping back in time as you’re effectively stepping on to a working live museum. There are few tourist attractions in the local area that allow you to be emerged in the history of how things used to be quite like the Nene Valley Railway does. It’s ideally situated as well with stops including Ferry Meadows and Peterborough it makes it really accessible.”

Photos: Courtesy of www.nvr.org.uk

With a number of events planned this year, which ones are you looking forward to the most and which are ones that people should book now to avoid disappointment?

It all began in 1977 when a group of railway enthusiasts realised their ambition to re-open a stretch of the 'Nene valley' railway line, Peterborough's first ever railway that had connected the city to London via Northampton in 1847. By 1972 only a small section of the route still existed, but when it was finally closed by British Rail, plans were already in place by the founder members of the NVR. Over the next 5 years local men and women re-laid miles of track, put in pointwork, rebuilt station platforms and much more before the NVR could open to the public.

Can you tell me a bit about your background, I understand your family has a connection with railways and steam trains? “Railways have always been an important part of family life; my Dad Patrick and his cousins are all enthusiasts and have been from an early age. My paternal grandfather, Arthur Piggott was a fireman on the Kettering railway in the 1930s, and his brother, Maurice Piggott met his wife, Evelyn, a Railway Clerk at the Railway social club in Peterborough. It’s lovely to have the railway back in the family again. “I’ve come from a ‘people management’ background really, I came from managing a team within a contact centre for RSA insurance for 2 years, and prior to that I ran a pension administration team in Hampton. I’ve a degree in psychology which I think occasionally helps with the people and organisational skills, and just love to meet and work with a variety of people and characters. This job is perfect for that as we have around 250 working volunteers in addition to the 16 paid staff and of course it’s great to meet and chat to our visitors.” The NVR has become one of the area’s biggest local attractions over the last 40 years. What do you think is the key to the NVR’s success?

I spoke to the NVR’s General Manager Sarah Piggott to get the inside track on how the railway's gearing up for its 40th anniversary month in June and beyond.

20 www.espmag.co.uk

“I think one of the main contributing factors to the railway’s success is the sheer passion and commitment from its volunteers over the years.

“The two events I’m personally looking forward to the most are the 40th weekend on June 3 and 4, which will include visiting Steam Locomotive Royal Scot, and also our double Gala Weekend in September which includes a visit from A4 class locomotive Union of South Africa on the second weekend. To have these visiting locos at our railway will be fantastic, and will give a great opportunity to showcase all we have to offer as well as do some vital fundraising – we are a charity after all. “We’ve got all sorts of other events throughout the year though, including Teddy’s Express, Classic Car Sunday, the Vintage Steam Rally and a number of events which include our Thomas Loco (Thomas branch Weekend June 10-11).” For full details of the rest of the NVR’s 40th anniversary year events visit their website www.nvr.org.uk

40 Years of Memories One person who remembers the NVR’s opening train in June 1977 is Brian Pearce, one of the railway’s longest serving volunteers. "It was a very proud moment. I just can't believe it was all that time ago, 60% of my life! Just look at what's been achieved since! I've lived in the same house since 1972, really boring I know but I like it and it was always close to work and our NVR and Railworld. This year’s celebrations for the NVR prompted me to go up in my loft and start digging so to speak." Above is a photo of Brian opening the gates at Ham Lane, Ferry Meadows crossing in 1972! Quite a find. Brian also runs The Railworld & Wildlife Haven located just behind the Peterborough Nene Valley station platform which I highly recommend. I took my kids recently and they loved seeing the wildlife area and what has to be the biggest indoor model railway in Peterborough. The Railworld Wildlife Haven will be open to visitors every weekend throughout June and beyond. See www.railworld.net for more details.

Then for dance music fans don’t forget there’s the brand new exciting Project Fest event heading to the East of England Showground on September 23 with camping throughout the weekend for those who want to get started early and attend the Friday night pre-party! Looking to go a bit further afield? There are plenty of local-ish festivals that aren’t going to break the bank. 110 Above is a music festival held in Leicestershire, boasting a line-up of acts showing huge promise, including: Sundara Karma, Black Honey and Eliza and the Bear, just to name a few, for a measly £75 (plus booking fees) from August 4 – 6. Another one to put on your radar is Dot To Dot in Nottingham (May 28), a day of wandering between venues at a renowned event that has showcased acts such as Ed Sheeran, Jake Bugg and The XX in the past for only £25 a ticket. Even with train tickets/ a hotel, you’ll still be comfortably paying less than the average festival and probably won’t have to take your wellies.

NEXT white cotton top £15

Whether you’re going for a day or the full weekend, it’s important not to forget the essentials... It’ll probably rain – remember that just because it’s summer, we’re never guaranteed actual sun. So pack waterproofs and remember to always zip your tent up to avoid unwanted sogginess. Take comfortable shoes and if there’s a schedule you want to keep to (acts/speeches/etc), make sure you know what’s going on when so you don’t miss out. Most importantly, take advantage of all of the amazing events we have coming to our city and surrounding areas this summer!

paparazzi Caught in the act? Party at The Ploughman

The Ploughman in Werrington is well known for throwing a good knees up and hosting some great live music but there was a special celebration recently. Landlord Andy Simmonds was celebrating a special birthday and what better way to enjoy it than with good friends and regulars at the pub with the Nuggets rocking out the tunes playing live. ESP’s man behind the lens was Mike Harris capturing everyone in the act of having a great night. You can view all our Paparazzi pics on Facebook.

Will it be the big time for another closet opera star, dance group or performing dog? Britain’s Got Talent is back on ITV and ESP’s Sarah Tempest settles on the sofa to find out… If you thought Saturday night entertainment couldn’t get any bigger than Ant ‘n’ Sarah Tempest Dec’s Disney World finale of Saturday Night Takeaway, then you clearly missed Linda the 69 year-old retired entertainer’s transformation from a decrepit Charlie Chaplin to an arthritic (still complete with square moustache) Jessie J, leaving us all screaming at the screen “Careful Linda! Don’t you know new hips can come with a hefty PPPPPPriiiiiiice tag?” Yes, Britain’s Got Talent is back for its 11th astonishing series and is still, according to all the foreign contestants who come and prove that Britain’s best talent is actually often from overseas, “The biggest show in the world!” The ‘kings of Saturday night’ Ant ‘n’ Dec are back on hosting duties, as are the familiar judging panel of Simon Cowell (woof for me, I’ll make 28 www.espmag.co.uk

you as big as Pudsey), Amanda Holden (I gift to you my clap, with my outstretched arms), Alesha Dixon (excuse me whilst I dab at my pretty tears) and David Walliams (Oooh Simon, do you need an innuendo? Here, let me give you one), promising to bring us laughter, tears and bromances along the way in the quest to find an act who can not only capture the heart and imagination of the great British public but is also fit to perform for a Royal. But, as in previous years, this series is as much about the judges as the performers they’re judging. “The banter is brilliant,” says Alesha. “If something feels good, it feels good. When we’re all together laughing, cracking jokes and winding each other up, that’s what makes going to work fun.” And she’s especially complimentary about Amanda Holden, and how well they get on. “If Amanda and I didn’t have the relationship that we have then it would be a different

dynamic, it would be a different show and I might not still be sitting here five or six years later. I think that’s the secret ingredient, we all like each other and have fun, that’s what makes it special.” But she does admit that she’s lost her temper with Simon Cowell a few times this series. “The cat noises!” she exclaims. “There isn’t a day that goes past on the auditions without Simon meowing or making cat noises. It’s his own little joke that only he’s in on and only he finds funny. Amanda and I can’t say one thing to a female without him making a meowing noise, it’s so annoying and needs to stop.” And that’s not the only thing that’s winding her up – “The ‘big fat yes’!” she laughs, “It needs to go! If I hear, ‘it’s a big fat yes from me’ one more time, I’m going to scream! Can we try a different type of yes? A big juicy yes!?” But Simon himself is not immune to being wound up by a fellow judge. “The Simon and

David dynamic continues to thrive!” laughs Alesha with a glint in her eye, “They have a love/hate relationship! David continues to get Simon to dance or gives him a dance! The last thing Simon Cowell wants to do is get up and start dancing but David won’t let go, he’s like a dog with a bone! I didn’t think David could get any more outrageous but he did something on this tour that definitely proves he can take it to the next level!” It’s not all about fun and laughter, however, as Alesha reveals – “What’s been really lovely this year is we’ve had some quite touching moments. We’ve had some really young contestants with wise heads on their shoulders, writing songs about real situations, real people in their lives and things that have affected them.” Will they find the next Diversity or Susan Boyle? Who knows, but one thing is for sure – whether the talent is extraordinary or in inverted commas, or about as British as sauerkraut; we’re in for top entertainment and another corker of a series! Catch Britain’s Got Talent every Saturday night on ITV.

Peterborough Air Conditioning Specialists

An affordable, high quality garage providing MoT testing, servicing, air-con refresh and more. Our top reasons to have aircon and to have it serviced regularly… • Keep Cool – Reduce the in-car temperature to a comfortable level on hot days. No need to get hot under the collar stuck in a long traffic jam with exhaust fumes coming straight into your open windows. It’s quieter and there’s no danger of insects flying in. • Keep Dry – Aircon systems condition the air and remove the moisture. The air conditioning button will control the humidity and the heater, if needed, will control the temperature leaving you free to enjoy the warmth without it being stuffy. • Keep Clear – Moisture on the glass will be evaporated rapidly giving better all round visibility much quicker than by using the heating system. • Keep Awake – The cleaner, fresher air with low relative humidity helps to reduce drowsiness on long journeys. • Keep Fresh – Air entering the aircon heat exchanger contains dust and pollen which is filtered out before reaching the cabin – great for everyone but especially those suffering from asthma or hay fever. • Keep Motoring – Fuel consumption is improved by allowing all car windows to remain closed even on the hottest days so the aerodynamics of the car remain at an optimum.

As Peterborough Air Conditioning Specialists we can: • Install complete aircon systems

• Repair and maintain air conditioning units

• Re-charge and service aircon systems

ALIEN: COVENANT Cast: Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup Director: Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott really goes back to his alien roots with this sequel to his disappointing Prometheus origin story that will hopefully bring back the magic of his 1979 masterpiece. This prequel to the classic original sees the crew of the colony ship Covenant bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy – which they believe to be an uncharted paradise. The vessel consists of a team – which includes British actress Katherine Waterston (Fantastic

Beasts and Where to Find Them), Billy Crudup (Watchmen), Danny McBride (This is the End) and Demian Bichir (The Hateful Eight) – and android Walter (Michael Fassbender), which is similar to David, a survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. But when they reach this mysterious planet, it soon reveals itself to be a dark and dangerous place, not only inhabited by the original David, but by monstrous creatures that start to hunt them. With rumoured cameos from James Franco (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Noomi Rapace – who was the lead in Prometheus – early feedback indicates this could be simply terrifying. Will anyone hear them scream?

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZAR’S REVENGE

BAYWATCH

Cast: Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush

Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario

With the Pirates franchise – though still hugely profitable – on a critical decline with every film after the much-loved original, let’s hope Skyfall’s Javier Bardem is the man to guide its sails back from choppy waters as the villain of the piece. After a six-year hiatus Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow obviously returns, along with old-timers – Geoffrey Rush’s Barbossa and Orlando Bloom’s cameoing Will

This big-budget remake of the hit late eighties/early nineties TV series is reportedly rude and raunchy with its R-rated (which basically means it will be at least a ‘15’ certificate this side of the pond) take on Mitch Buchanan and his slow-motion running pals. This has been tagged as potentially the first major blockbuster ‘bomb’ of the summer – especially after the disaster that was 2004’s Clive Owen-headlining movie based on the same character. This time another British star, Pacific Rim and The Lost City of Z’s Charlie Hunnam, stars as the legendary swordsman, brought up the hard way in the back alleys of Londinium after being robbed of his birthright. But when he pulls the sword from the stone he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy – and battles Jude Law’s dictator Vortigern.

MASS EFFECT: ANDROMEDA (X1/PS4/PC)

This highly-anticipated next-gen iteration of one of the finest gaming trilogies of the past decade is hampered by inexcusable performance issues – but still shows flashes of genius to those familiar with the series. Acclaimed developers Bioware have a lot of patching to do to appease the naysayers with the game being the sci-fi equivalent of the good, the bad and the ugly – despite promising so much as you venture to pastures new across the cosmos. Playing as the Pathfinder – by customisation or using one of the default Ryder twins (Scott or Sara) – in a dangerous galaxy far beyond the Milky Way in search for a home for humans to inhabit, Andromeda excels with its franchise-best shooting mechanics, exploration (particularly in the Nomad buggy) and sometimes luscious graphics, as you take on new alien enemies. But to counteract that, sadly the character facial animations, clunky dialogue and graphical glitches have currently put a dampener on a half-baked action-RPG product that seems to have been rushed to meet its launch deadline. If you’re a fan there’s still much to enjoy here – as it’s still Mass Effect at its core – and if some of the problems are sorted ‘effect’ively, another mark could easily be added to the score.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… It may not have been the season we wanted on the pitch, however, the pitch itself can be showered with praise, finishing the campaign in arguably the best shape it’s ever been in modern times and that is thanks to the youngest groundsman on the circuit… I must confess gardening has never been a strong point of mine. In fact, I detest it so much that I’ve got a fake garden at my house, which means the only work required is to drag the Henry vacuum outside and let it do its magic.

Dan is actually the youngest Groundsman in the English Football League at the tender age of 22, which makes me think that I probably should have spent more time outside than on the Sega Mega Drive as I powered through my teens.

tragically lost his life in the Westminster attacks. “I wanted to do something to show that everyone is united in football. The police officer was a Charlton season ticket holder, so I produced a surface that included a thin blue line.

However, I have gained a new found admiration for those that spend their days tending to their grass and at the ABAX Stadium, Groundsman Dan Selcraig has put himself firmly in the frame for any end of season horticultural awards (yes I had to Google that word to make sure I got the right one).

In fact, not only is he one of the youngest, but I would imagine, he is one of the most enthusiastic too. “I get a real sense of pride when the fans come into the stadium on a match day and the players walk out of the tunnel and onto my pitch. We have been fortunate with the weather and how the fixtures have been scheduled, but I am pleased with how things have gone this season,” Dan told me.

“The thin blue line is a charity which supports police officers up and down the country and provides them with an excellent support network. I thought it would be a brilliant tribute and I think the supporters recognised what I produced. It is difficult sometimes to do different patterns every game because of the cost implications, but I like to be creative.”

“...not only is he one of

the youngest, but I would imagine, he is one of the most enthusiastic too. ”

32 www.espmag.co.uk

And so he should. Some of the biggest clubs in League One have suffered at the hands of a bobbly surface (Bradford, Millwall and Bolton to name a few), but Grant McCann and his players can’t use the ABAX pitch as a reason for the general form in front of their own supporters this season. Dan even went above the call of duty against Charlton Athletic when he produced a tribute to police officer PC Keith Palmer who

Of course, it is not just footballers that will grace the ABAX Stadium pitch in the coming weeks, music icon Sir Elton John will be performing a first concert – Dan is looking forward to it. “It provides different challenges but it is something we are all looking forward to. I can say that Sir Elton has played on my pitch!” That is some boast, I can’t even say that next door’s cat stays very long on my ‘pitch’. Phil

DRIVING UP STANDARDS

MCN BIKE FEST One of my favourite bike events of the year is on this month and I’m getting my Triple polished up ready to head to the East of England Arena.

Stamford Teen to Race at Silverstone

I look forward to The Carole Nash MCN Festival of Motorcycling (May 13 – 14) all year and this one is promising even more action and attractions at low ticket prices! Last year I was one of over 18,000 visitors (along with ESP’s editor) to head down there to pick up some bike gear bargains and enjoy some top quality demonstrations… and drool over some two wheel beauties of course.

This year’s event boasts the biggest demo fleet of new bikes anywhere in the country. Visitors have the chance to test ride an extensive fleet of all the latest 2017 machines from a range of manufacturers including Triumph, Yamaha, Suzuki, KTM, Kawasaki and Ducati. There’s also the chance to browse more retail stands, an expanded Club Zone, non-stop live action plus the ever popular autojumble section selling everything from complete bikes, tools, new and used spares and plenty more great motorcycling finds. The range of test bikes at this year’s event includes some of the most sought after machines of 2017. The naked middleweight category is always hard fought between manufacturers but 2017 has brought us a line-up of machines that’s tastier than ever including the 34 www.espmag.co.uk

Triumph Street Triple RS and Kawasaki’s Z900. There will be a full round of the DTRA (Dirt Track Riders Association) championships in the Maxxis speedway arena and Chris Walker will be taking to the dirt as he competes in the Hooligan Flat track races – 750cc post 1980 machines on road tyres around a speedway oval is something not to be missed! One of the biggest collections of classic and historic race bikes will be fired up during the event. Together with the Brackley Festival of Motorcycling, MCN are gathering some stunning machines, everything from 1950’s Grand Prix machines to a Kawasaki H2R – there’ll be over 50 bikes in the Motorex fire-up paddock.

There’s plenty of camping too with some great evening entertainment for those who stay all weekend. Day tickets and camping packages are now on sale, with discounted day tickets at £15 online, seniors (over 65) £11 and camping starts at £30 per person. Children go free. For more info and to book tickets visit www.mcnfestival.com or call 0871 230 1108.

Ed Thurston is too young to have a pint in a pub or go clubbing but he’s good enough and old enough to race at the Silverstone Classic motor racing festival in July (28 to 30). The 16-year-old Stamford-based historic racing driver will go wheel to wheel alongside such luminaries as TV presenter and former F1 driver Tiff Needell in his own 1971 Elden MK8. Ed is already ranked well within the top 10 in his racing field and is looking forward to taking part in the 50th anniversary of Formula Ford racing for pre-1972 cars at the home of the British Grand Prix.

His 1600cc Elden car weighs only 500 kg with him in it and he was clocked at nearly 130mph along the hangar straight during a recent media test day. Ed told ESP: “To drive at the world’s largest motor racing festival is amazing and for it to be at Silverstone makes it all the better. Being surrounded by famous drivers and celebrities at the test and media day was awesome. But the biggest highlight was definitely when Tiff Needell complimented me on how quick I was. He then asked me where on the track he (Tiff) thought he was slow! I resisted the cheeky reply of ‘Everywhere’ and we had a good chat.” Ed could definitely be one for the future. Watch this space.

ESP’s Rachael Church has all the latest health and beauty news‌

The ESP team were among the first visitors through the door of the new Alwalton Hall Spa! We went along to a special preview night before its official opening. The venue is a stunning setting for a new spa. The lovely old building has been transformed into a health and beauty haven. The downstairs still has all the beautiful old features of a residential house, whilst the upstairs has been modernised into relaxing and stylish treatment rooms. One of the Alwalton team, Jess, gave us a special behind the scenes tour. She told us how the team had an input along with the house’s owners on how the spa should look and feel. Each treatment room has an around the world theme, with Kenya, Japan and India just some of the countries covered in each treatment space. With amazing colours on the walls and thoughtful dÊcor touches, it does feel like an extra special facility. Jess also told ESP that all the therapists have received an extra six weeks training this year to make sure Alwalton Hall delivers a 36 www.espmag.co.uk

unique service to them. Plus, they’ve chosen to use DeclÊor, beauty products which originated from Paris, not seen in many local spas or beauty establishments. Ian Bailey was there on the night representing DeclÊor, and he told ESP how delighted they were to be part of Alwalton Hall’s journey. DeclÊor specialises in luxurious beauty products, many with a wonderful aromatherapy smell and thick creamy feel. Get down there to try them out for yourself. Alwalton Hall is offering a range of treatments from full spa days to a simple eyebrow wax. It will also be opening an outdoor pool and hot spa, plus a place to have a meal or afternoon tea. So, whether you want a really special day out with friends and family, or a quick beauty treatment refresh, make sure you pop down and see what they have to offer.

If you’ve been into Queensgate recently, you can’t miss the vibrant New Look store that’s opened up near to Primark. Spread over two floors, it’s not just good for clothes shopping, they’ve made room for some fab health and beauty products too. Apparently they had an awesome opening weekend, so I popped down to check out what’s hot in store. Here are my top picks! Honey and almond nourishing body oil – £5.99 Smells amazing, feels even better! A body oil can be a bit of a luxury, but not at this price! Shea hand cream – £2.49 Another great price! I’ve bought one to put on my desk at work and apply a few times throughout the day for super soft hands. Detox tea tree purifying face mask – £4.99 My favourite product – great value but feels more expensive as it leaves your skin feeling so refreshed and cleansed. Tea tree is also great for the skin! Also, look out for the great range of tanning products now summer’s on the way. Plus fragrances and makeup essentials all at good prices.

HAPPY 7th BIRTHDAY TO US

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month (try saying that quickly!) It’s a great time to pick up that New Year’s resolution again to get fit and healthy. 60 minutes of exercise everyday is the aim! A few different ideas from us here at ESP‌ -

Try a different sport – I’ve just started golf lessons once a week, and it’s already proving a great form of light exercise. Look up if your local club offers free lessons for beginners.

-

Get walking – You might have seen Peterborough has a new set of ‘blue plaques’ symbolising historic buildings. Why not walk the route until you’ve seen them all.

-

Trampolining – now we have Bounce at Bretton, it’s a great way for both adults and kids to exercise their way to fitness.

Congratulations are in order as here at ESP we wish Happy 7th Birthday to local skincare experts My Body Essentials. Just look how many people’s lives MBE have helped make a difference to with almost 3000 registered clients – that equates to over one new client for every day! Since opening in 2010 (their first client, a guy treated for full back IPL hair removal) MBE have been removing hair, rejuvenating ageing skin and repairing damage caused by ill health, the sun and environmental factors. Each year they add more and more sought after aesthetic, non invasive treatments offering effective solutions to the many unhealthy and unwanted skin issues that plague us all whatever our age. Martin, Mary and their team told me they’ve loved meeting all of their clients and look forward to welcoming all existing and hopefully many more new clients in future years. They’re a lovely team and we can vouch for their great treatments so give them a call on 01733 234251 or visit www.mybodyessentials.co.uk to see how you can get fantastic results for brighter, healthier skin.

Don’t forget, Thursday April 27 is Queensgate’s Martinis, Music and Muses evening. Join me and the ESP crew down there for a night of entertainment, health, fashion and beauty tips. Lauren Pope will be DJing, so it’s a great chance for you and your friends to come out for the evening. It’s free admission, so see you there! www.espmag.co.uk

Being

Whilst we’ve not seen the harshest of winters there’s always a stirring of relief when spring arrives, longer days, warmer weather and the signs of new growth springing up in our environment as we witness the new buds starting to bloom as the earth becomes alive again!

A Spring Clean For The Soul Move other obstacles that are cluttering up and blocking your energy flow, this could be… The cupboard crammed with old stuff no longer needed. Sheets, towels, blankets, clothes etc we hang on to for years, either give them away or throw them away. Make up bag – you might be surprised at how many old lotions and potions you find in there, old nail polishes that are dried and clogged up. Your car – it is a vehicle to transport you from A to B, not a skip for your old rubbish! What about all those half used shampoo, conditioner, body lotion bottles and such? Throw them or organise them to be used before buying more. Your handbag (if you use one), I am sure you will find a mass of rubbish in there. Oh and then there’s the spice cupboard, you might find that spice bottle that went out of date in 2003 still lurking in the back!

Spring is a time for renewal after the natural dormant phase of the winter, this is the time of year we also feel an urge to grow, renew and burst forth with new vitality. It’s the best time to clear out the old and make way for the new. We feel a natural urge to clean, clear and declutter. Starting with your physical body… Start to move more – if you’ve been less than active over the winter months, start to get the flow going. Dance, walk, run, stretch, try yoga, rebounding – do whatever gets your chi energy flowing. Skin brush – using a dry skin brush, each morning, before a shower/bathing, brush over the body using upwards strokes (avoid any sore skin areas), this will help slough off dead skin cells to allow new ones to show, helps your lymphatic system and really helps you to feel the energy flow.

Water – start to intake a little more water, take a few glasses of clean, filtered water during the day, we need water to move wastes out and help conduct energy. Sauna – if you can get to a dry sauna, get in there and sweat it out (not if you have high BP or other health issues that advise against a sauna) Sunshine – our original superfood, when the sun does come out, jump into it and welcome some warm rays on your body, this is truly energising as well as helping our Vitamin D reserves. Lessen the amount of sugar and processed grains you eat and increase colourful veg and some fruits to your diet, when you add more of these you can crowd out some of the unwanted processed foods in your life. Dilute, swap or reduce your caffeine intake. Why not consider a mini detox or cleanse, giving your body the rest it needs from the excesses of food and drinks?

What about the electronics in your life? Delete those old files, clean up your computer/laptop, your phone? How many old numbers do you have on there you don’t need? Spring is also a good time to evaluate where you’re heading in life, a great time to set some attainable goals.

“Spring is also a good time to evaluate where you’re heading in life, a great time to set some attainable goals.” When we release the old stagnant blocks physically, mentally and emotionally we attract new life giving energy, we become more creative whilst feeling a greater sense of wellbeing, joy and happiness. Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘let’s party’! Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

g n i d i Gl In last month's issue of ESP I wrote about taking an Easter 'Staycation' to enjoy all the great things you can do in the Peterborough area without having to travel too far to escape for a break. as a one-off or are using a flight voucher they've received as a gift. You can fly from as young as 14 and there's no upper age limit either so you can send you granddad and teenage kid up together.

Photos: Tim Beasley

I took my teenage son Ethan with me to share this awesome experience; he chose to send me up first whilst he watched with his feet firmly on the ground.

Amongst these treats, one exceptionally exciting activity I did with my son Ethan was taking a visit to Peterborough and Spalding Gliding Club for our very own flight experience. This was certainly something special and it's right on our doorstep too. The club’s situated only a short drive from Peterborough just on the edge of Crowland. Upon arrival we were greeted by some top chaps who gave us a little tour and a chat making us feel instantly welcome. There's an immediate community feel to the place, a nice little clubhouse and members of all ages, hanging out chatting and taking it in turns to fly, or just enjoying the atmosphere and watching others go up. Whilst memberships are very popular for all the benefits, you don't need to be a member. Many flyers come along to treat themselves 40 www.espmag.co.uk

We were briefed on the gliders, the flight plan and the whole flight process, before finally wriggling snuggly into the cockpit and being talked through the knobs and dials. Sat in the front seat my bum was only inches from the floor, a tow rope was secured to the front of our glider pretty much where my feet were. My instructor sat behind talking me through everything as the small plane in front moved off pulling the rope tight and dragging us surprisingly along the ground. Within no time we were quickly off the ground and ascending to around 2,000ft before my instructor pulled the release cord, the tow-rope dropped away and we were gliding silently through the air! It was amazing looking down on a tiny Crowland village, across to Peterborough in the distance and all the very neat fields and toy cars and houses. I was given control for a while and able to steer using the horizon as my guide and using thermals to climb higher before gracefully floating along to find more lift. We eventually made our way

back around to the landing area – this bit was very much in the hands of my instructor. We came in for a landing which was way smoother than I was bracing myself for and delicately rolled to a stop. After walking this incredibly light aircraft back to the start, it was Ethan's turn, he was briefed, launched, and disappeared into the blue sky off to enjoy what was to be his highlight of the year! Memberships are much less than I expected, especially for younger flyers. Junior memberships are as low as just £60 per year, and that includes your first flight too! After that you can fly for as little as £25 a time which is an absolute bargain for such an experience. If you’re aged 19-25 you can join up for £150 which includes two flights, membership for flyers 25+ (I just make that category) is just £290 for the year with three flights included.

The club and members are really welcoming and there's a great relaxed feel there. I suspect Ethan and I will be back again soon! www.psgc.co.uk

This month you get the chance to see one of my favourite comedians perform in Peterborough – Reginald D Hunter.

H

e’s arguably one of the best American comedians of all time and I can’t recommend strongly enough that you see him while he’s in the city. Fearless, opinionated, challenging but yet so down to earth – we are in for a real comedy treat when he takes to the Cresset stage on Sunday May 21. There’s been plenty of material for him to get his teeth into lately so I have high expectations for a great night of live stand up. The election of Donald Trump not only turned the country upside down but also the content of his show which had to be rapidly rewritten. With a wry grin, he reveals that, “My new show was mostly written last autumn. Then Trump got elected, and I had to rewrite it very quickly.” Reginald adds, with mock sheepishness, “I’m almost ashamed to do stand-up this year. I spent the whole of

2016 repeatedly telling people that Trump was not going to win. I’m amazed they still let me do comedy!” Born in the Deep South of the USA, he’s been based in this country for the past 15 years and luckily for us he’s happy to stay in the UK. “I love the not-loudness of the Brits compared to Americans,” Reg explains. “I like the ease of discourse and the fact that you can disagree without guns. I also love the fact that in Britain, you’re allowed to be openly smart. In fact, you can get laid in Britain for being openly smart. I can’t think of any other country where that’s true!” I saw Reg do a show in Edinburgh a few years back where he impressively handled the most rowdy drunken crowd with true skill. His latest show entitled Some People v. Reginald D Hunter is pure Reg – often provocative, piercingly honest material that’s gained him an enormous fanbase.

Coming Soon…

JASON MANFORD GIG ANNOUNCED Next year we have Jason Manford to look forward to at the East of England Arena on March 23! He’s back with his new show Muddle Class which promises to feature a wealth of new material about Jason growing up ‘working class’ then finding, over the years, that part of him has become ‘middle class’ – causing much confusion! Jason said: “Somebody said to me on my Facebook fan page, 'it's been ages since you've toured'. I thought, no way, it was last year wasn't it? Anyway, long story short, they were right, it was years ago! I just got fooled ‘cause I've been on tour doing musicals and the last tour is repeated on Dave ja Vu 13 times a day! So I’ve been putting some stuff together, looking at my life and how it's changed over the years, how the world has changed and how my parents haven't changed a bit. It's going to be a great tour and I can't wait to see you there.” Delivered with Jason’s amiable charm and captivating wit, this is a show not to be missed. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster or see more on the Arena’s website.

Brian’s British Empire Medal Moment Brian Gascoyne, a renowned campaigner and community champion in the city for over 50 years is celebrating this month after he was presented with the British Empire Medal. Brian was rewarded for services to community cohesion in Peterborough in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List on January 1, 2017 and received the award at a special ceremony at Peterborough Town Hall a few weeks ago.

The Blue Plaques are Back! If you’ve taken a walk around Peterborough recently you may have noticed some brand new blue plaques in the city centre. They’ve been installed by Peterborough Civic Society, and Toby Wood, the society’s vice chairman told ESP all about them. "The plaques commemorate places and people, some well-known, others less so. Subjects include Thomas Becket, Arthur James Robertson, The Customs House and the Lido. The project is the culmination of two years research. Most are new but some replace older plaques erected by the Society over twenty years ago and it is hoped that, once the scheme has become established, other plaques will be added at a later date." The twenty blue plaques have been installed by Leander Architectural of Buxton, Derbyshire who’ve manufactured the plaques and who have a national reputation for producing plaques, signs and notices for organisations such as the National Trust.

Toby continues – "As well as the plaques themselves, a free explanatory leaflet has been produced which will be available from the Visitor Information Centre in Bridge Street. The leaflet will also soon be available for download from the Civic Society’s website where, over the coming months, additional information about each plaque will soon be available. It’s envisaged that the scheme may be expanded in the next few years." For the whole of the month of June there’ll be a display of all of the plaques, their location as well as background material about the Society in the new Exhibitions building in Peterborough Cathedral Precincts. The Civic Society’s website is www.peterboroughcivicsociety.org.uk Marc Hernandez 44 www.espmag.co.uk

When he originally learned of the award last year in a telephone call Brian told ESP he thought someone was playing a prank on him. “A lady rang me and said 'I’m calling from the Cabinet Office and The Prime Minister has asked me to contact you to see if you’ll accept an award, the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List’ and I thought this is a joke, but I’ll go along with it to see where it leads. So I’m thinking ‘Who’s put them up to this? It’s not April 1st!' but the following day a letter arrived, I looked at the post stamp and saw 1 Horseguards and straight away thought 10 Downing Street so of course then my knees started to shake!" Brian who lives in Yaxley was joined at the investiture ceremony at Peterborough Town Hall by his wife Sandy, his mother and other members of his family and close colleagues as the Queen’s Lord Lieutenant presented Brian with the British Empire Medal. “I’m not easily impressed, and as a former cinema projectionist, I’ve seen it all,” Brian told me, “but I’m proud to be British and it does give you a very deep sense of pride. “To have the ceremony four months later, it churns you up again, brings back all those emotions and all the things you’ve done in you life. I believe if you’re going to do something for the community you do it for the community and for nothing else and that’s what drives me."

Amongst his many achievements Brian is chairman of the Holocaust Day Memorial Committee, chairman of the Millfield and New England Regeneration Partnership (MANERP) and has also been a leading campaigner for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in the city. As editor of ‘Out & About’ he ran diversity courses for a number of UK police forces, but his involvement with Peterborough began way back in 1963 as a pupil at Eastholm School. Upon leaving school Brian worked as a commis chef, a baker and a carpet salesmen before joining the Embassy Theatre to become a projectionist at the ABC Cinema. Whilst in the industry he served as a full time officer for NATKE (The National Association of Theatrical and Kine Employees) and then BECTU (The Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union). After nearly twenty years representing employees, he then decided on a career change, setting up a taxi firm in the city which he sold in 1999 before running a number of pubs in the city such as The Cross Keys, The Boys Head, The Crown, The Greyhound, The Westwood and The Carpenters Arms. If you’ve ever heard somebody sing ‘King of the Road’ at a karaoke night in any of these pubs, it will more than likely have been Brian! A celebration party in his honour was later held with family, friends and colleagues who’ve a played a part in Brian’s life in Peterborough since 1963. During the summer Brian and Sandy then attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace. Everyone at ESP Magazine offers there warmest congratulations to Brian on his award, and wishes him many more years of fine service to Peterborough and the local community. Marc Hernandez

MALL GRAB HEADLINES MIXOLOGY

FUNK & VINYL @ CHARTERS

HOUSE LEGENDS AT SOLGARDEN

The opening of the new look Red Room will be marked by a huge party on Friday May 26 with Australian star Mall Grab taking to the decks. The Mixology crew told ESP – “We’re so incredibly excited to welcome one of the rising talents in house and techno to Mixology. To be voted in the Resident Advisor Top 100 DJs is some feat and Mall Grab has achieved this breaking all kinds of musical moulds on his rapid rise to recognition on the world stage in 2016.” Previously working from the confines of his studio in his decidedly un-electronic hometown of Newcastle, Australia – now based in London – he’s a clear example of the connective power of the Internet; proof that the web does have the ability to get real talent noticed. His music has been described as paying homage to old Three 6 Mafia mixtapes as much as more recent astral experiences in house and techno and Mall is ‘a surefire purveyor of leg-stretching, dusty house material’. Stripped back yet emotional, his love for music and fun is obvious – whether it's in his own productions, or one of his energyfilled DJ sets. Get ready to hear some of the finest house and techno reverberate around Red Room. You'd be a fool to miss out on this Mixology!

You can keep funking at Charters this month with DJ Jo G from 9.30pm. The regular What The Funk nights will get you moving every Saturday night May 6, 13 and 20. On Friday May 19 you can take along your own LPs and 45s for a spin at their monthly Vinyl Night from 8pm onwards.

Get ready for the big one when house legends Seb Fontaine and Phil Drummond hit SolGarden on Saturday May 6. It marks the return of the ever popular SolGarden Sessions and they’ll be joined by resident DJ Alex Vacca for what’s going to be another full-on night. A true pioneer of the Radio One dance music movement, Seb Fontaine has more than made it in the dance music world. Fronting high-profile gigs in all four corners of the globe, Seb is one of the most recognised DJ’s in the world. Joining him is Phil Drummond who’s notched up four Top 40 records and toured in over 80 countries during the last 20 years. These two know a thing or two about rocking a club. As usual the Void sound system will be in place making sure everything is rocking in the SolGarden from 10pm! Your tickets will gain you entry to the whole building on the night so get yours now on resident advisor.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says...

The Motor City Vipers were absolutely brilliant at The Brewery Tap for Randall Rootz, and with new female singer Haylie Mason joining the rest of the very talented band members they’re going to enjoy another very successful year. On the night I heard a very strong rumour that they’re already lined up for the Ploughman Beer Festival and also for the Peterborough Beer Festival. Something to look forward to for the summer!

The Brays Release New Album

It’s been 2 years in the making, but local band, The Brays, have just released their third album. The album is titled ‘VIII Sweeter Made Sorrows’ and features eight new songs. Singer Gavin Hyde told ESP he hopes it will have a wide appeal – “We’re aiming for the album to deliver not only to our existing fan base, but will also offer a lot more for people that are maybe less familiar or inclined to the type of music we create.” So there are eight brand new tracks contained on the album and Gavin explained – “The tracks are essentially a collection of cautionary tales that have been a feature for one or all of us at one time or another. “From the opening track, ‘Animals’, a commentary on the darker side of the personalities we meet from day to day, to track 5, ‘Nobody Knows’, which looks at the impact and ignorance of living with mental disorders, and then to the light hearted L.A. which is all about the importance of being in the right places with the right people when you’ve just had one of those days or weeks. There is something relatable to most of us in these eight songs and the greatest thing we can hope for is that people enjoy them as much as we loved bringing them to life.” The Brays are expecting to perform some gigs locally in June and we’ll let you know where once we know in next month’s ESP or on our online gig listing at www.espmag.co.uk. Meanwhile, ‘VIII - Sweeter Made Sorrows’ is available on ITunes and all major download platforms. You can also follow The Brays on their Facebook page or YouTube channel. 48 www.espmag.co.uk

Acts Announced for Stamford Music Festival

I’ve had an update on the Stamford Music Festival which returns to the Town Meadows this summer. The first acts have been announced for the three-day event which takes place over the weekend of Friday July 14 to Sunday July 16. Bands and musicians playing the festival include local favourites Groove Cartell (Sunday), The Gangsters (Saturday), Bianca and the Top Cats (Friday), Top Banana Band (Friday), Austin Gold, Steve Bean and The Balloons. This year there will also be an acoustic stage where organisers The Market Square Group are inviting some of the best of the region's singers and bands to take to the spotlight as the volume is turned down a level to focus on emerging talent. Already announced for this stage are Joey Clarkson, George Linton, Pembroke Tenneson, Eva Rose, Holly Jean, Fyzz Wallis and Oakleas Rise. Each day there’ll be plenty to do including children’s entertainment, a craft market, and stalls offering a variety of food and drink including craft beer and street food. Early bird tickets for the event (daily or weekend tickets) are on sale online now from www.clickit-tickets.co.uk

Water Newton Music Festival is Back

After a year’s absence, the ever popular Water Newton Music Festival is set to return and will take place in the village on Bank Holiday Sunday August 27. Those of us who’ve been to previous events will know there is a great atmosphere and once again you can be sure of some great live music with a number of popular local bands already booked. These include The Gangsters, Latino Sound, The Wansford Ukulele Players, and Pennyless. Further acts will be added to the line up over the coming weeks. This open air one day event starts at 12 noon and is held on the

village green with continuous music through to 7.30pm, so it’s a great family event for the Bank Holiday weekend. This year there’ll be great ‘street food’, burgers & bangers, a beer tent and also on offer are real ales supplied by Castor Ales and a ‘Pimms & Bubbles’ bar. This is a charity gig with all profits going to Friends of St Remigius to help maintain and improve the ancient church in the village on the banks of the River Nene. We’ll keep you up to date with the latest acts nearer the time and keep your eye on the website: www.waternewtonvillage.co.uk

The Ouse Valley Singles Club Remember The Girl From The Fens video which proved a huge hit on YouTube? Well the band that performed it, East Anglia’s top comedy skiffle band, The Ouse Valley Singles Club tell us they have a busy summer ahead having been signed up to various festivals.

Fleetwood Mac Tribute

Coming to Stamford Corn Exchange on Friday May 5 are Fleetingwood Mac, a young and exciting new tribute to the legendary band Fleetwood Mac. They aim to bring to the stage the live sound of the band with just one guitar, a keyboard, a drum kit, a man on the bass and of course, the vocals! Fleetingwood Mac being quite young themselves, (indeed the members weren’t even born when Fleetwood Mac were in their prime) hope to introduce the songs to a new generation of Fleetwood Mac fans. As they say “We do not go on stage pretending to be Fleetwood Mac, instead we go on as who we are, five young musicians who love the music, and want to share the music of one of the world’s greatest bands to a wider audience.” I think that’s a great idea and with such an extensive songbook they have some wonderful music to deliver to the audience at Stamford Corn Exchange. Tickets are available from the box office on 01780 766455.

These Sistas Can Groove

Here’s a quick tip on a new soul act hitting the scene that’s close to our hearts. ESP’s Dance Crew choreographer Nicole Saunders is a multi talented lass and not only dances but sings, so I introduce to you, Nicole and

Sandra – the Groove Sistas! You can see the girls live at The Pizza Parlour and Music Café in Peterborough on Monday May 15 and again on June 19. Nicole told me – “We are two like minded gals, who after years of singing as both soloists and backing singers, decided to get together and perform all the classics we love! From Chaka to Sister Sledge, we WILL get your party started!” If you’d like to book the Groove Sistas visit www.groovesistas.co.uk.

Firstly though, they’re returning to the Light Cinema in Wisbech, this time to celebrate the venue’s 2nd birthday on Saturday May 20. Sam from the band told me – “We first played there shortly after we released our Girl From The Fens video on YouTube as it was taking off. Tim, our front man, originally wrote the song for Amy, our bass player (and Tim’s wife). Amy is from Wisbech and one weekend when she was at her mum’s Tim recorded the song and posted it on Facebook for her. The song quickly became a massive viral sensation doing the rounds on social media especially around the Fenland and East Anglian region and The Light Cinema was one of the first venues in the area to book us to play. It was a great night and we’re pleased to have been invited back to play as part of their birthday celebrations again.” The Girl From The Fens has become a bit of a Fenland anthem and you can catch the band performing the tune live at The Wheatsheaf on June 2, the Thursday night of this year’s 40th Peterborough Beer Festival and on the Sunday night at the Green Meadows Festival. On May 18 they will also be guests on Doc Mason’s show on the city’s new FM station Peterborough Community Radio. If you’re yet to catch their live show then you’re in for a treat. They are one of the most original outfits currently doing the live circuit.

Hailing from the historic market town of Bedford The OVSC are Tim Barron (compere/vocals/ukulele), Amy Martell (vocals/bass) Uncle Sam (vocals/toasting/washboard) Jim Morton (snare) and sometimes member Neil Whittington (guitar). So why do they choose a humorous style for their songs? “The question should be, why don’t more songwriters use humour in their music?” says Sam. “Humour is our unique selling point and sets us apart from all the other bands in the region. Tim our lead singer, frontman and founder member has been in bands that were cool and edgy writing conventional rock and roll lyrics but no one took him seriously – do some silly songs with adult content and all of a sudden people started taking notice. “Your typical English man will use humour to communicate in most everyday conversations so it just makes sense to us that it should manifest in music. We like to think we are participating in something that is truly English, the ‘novelty song’ (for want of a better term). It’s a bit of a forgotten genre but judging by the response we get on our travels people have an appetite for it again.” The band’s heavily influenced by the sounds and traditions of 1950’s Skiffle (Google it) combined with the energy of punk and a little rub’n’dub reggae mixed with hilarious folk-like story-telling, often crossing the parameters of what’s deemed to be politically correct. “We always like to base our songs on real experiences we’ve had or someone we know has had,” explains Sam. “Obviously we embellish a large amount and it’s got to fit a certain rhythm. Names and places are also usually changed to avoid lawsuits!” So don’t miss these guys at The Light Cinema this month and for more on the band visit www.theousevalleysinglesclub.com www.espmag.co.uk
