NEW £65,000 NATURAL PLAY AREA AT SACREWELL There’s more good news for local attractions as a new immersive natural play area will officially open at Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre on Tuesday July 2.

Using features of the natural landscape, including the stream and woodland, the play area will encourage children to reconnect with nature through adventure play. It’ll be officially opened at 1pm, followed by a celebration near the Grade II* listed Watermill with refreshments provided by Origin8 so why not pop down and take the kids. The project has been funded by a £50,000 grant from Augean South Ltd following a recommendation from the King’s Cliffe and Thornhaugh Environmental Associations. The William Scott Abbott Trust which operates the visitor centre at Sacrewell contributed a further £15,000. Sacrewell worked with pioneers in natural play, Earth Wrights Ltd., which designed activities that include den and nest building, balance beams, walks and bridges that complement the area, which is located near the popular Pooh Sticks Bridge. www.sacrewell.org.uk.

CYCLING FESTIVAL NEEDS VOLUNTEERS – AND OLD BIKES Bourne cycle festival organisers are looking for old bikes – to paint yellow and place along the route – and Race-Makers to help as volunteers over the weekend of August 31 and September 1. Mikey Clarke has the ESP guide to the best shows around...

Peterborough Playgoers present Deathtrap We have some great local talent in the city and this month Peterborough Playgoers are presenting Deathtrap by Ira Levin. Unknown dramatist Clifford Anderson has sent his new thriller to award-winning Broadway author Sidney for comment – or has he? Without a success to his credit for some years, Sidney plots with his reluctant wife Myra about how best to plagiarise Deathtrap and when Clifford turns up to discuss the play with the 'Master', events take a sinister turn. This play holds the record for the longest running comedy thriller on Broadway running from February 1978 until January 1982, clocking up 1793 performances. It was filmed in 1982 with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve playing the male leads. And now you get to see it here in Peterborough! Catch it at the Key Studio from June 5 – 8. Tickets are £14 from the Key on 01733 207239.

Fast Love – A Tribute to George Michael Direct from London’s West End, get ready for an unforgettable evening celebrating the global superstar that is George Michael at Peterborough New Theatre on Broadway. The show features all his hits including Father Figure, Freedom, Faith and many more. This show will take you on a musical journey from the moving Jesus To A Child, to the celebration of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, to everyone’s favourites I’m Your Man and Wake Me Up. It’s a respectful tribute to one of the greatest musicians of all time with a stunning stage show that’s taking the globe by storm. Don’t miss it on Friday July 5. Coldplace

Soul Legends

Funnily enough, just one hour prior to writing this page, I was singing along loudly to Coldplay’s Fix You in the car. I love the thought of singing along with hundreds of other people and can soon do so. Coldplace are a tribute band whose quality and experience on the tribute scene are second to none. In 12 years the band has over 600 gigs under their belts across the length and breadth of the UK and abroad in over twenty different countries worldwide. Coldplace know what’s expected from a live tribute show – the accuracy, musicianship, dedication and passion for Coldplay's music. Their aim, as a tribute to one of the world's biggest bands, is to capture the feeling of a live Coldplay performance, the music, the visuals, the energy and the atmosphere. We all know and love the songs of Coldplay. Expect to hear all the classics at the Cresset on Friday June 21. Tickets are £22.50 on 01733 265705.

Whether you’re a Soul Man, a Natural Woman, or just a plain old Sex Machine, there’s something here for you. The smash-hit spectacular, Soul Legends, will be bringing to life the hits of Barry White, George Benson, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Tina Turner, Lionel Richie, Wilson Pickett, Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, and more, all in ‘soulsational’ style! Jump aboard the soul train at the Cresset on Thursday June 27 as it takes you on an unforgettably smooth music journey from its sixties origins, to present day, via all the classic seventies and eighties floor fillers. You’ll be wowed by an all-star cast of talented singers and musicians, and amazed by the costumes and jaw-dropping choreography. You’ll be on your feet reliving your favourite soul anthems: Respect, Ain’t Nobody, Knock On Wood, Midnight Hour, You’re My First My Last My Everything, Best Of My Love, River Deep Mountain High, Ain’t No Stopping Us Now, Beat It, I Feel Good, Three Times a Lady, Get Down On It, and more. Tickets are £26.50 on 01733 265705.

SISTER ACT One of my favourite films as a child is coming to a stage near us. Nostalgia overload! Sister Act is the feel-good musical comedy smash based on the hit 1992 movie that has audiences jumping to their feet! When disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she’s put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won't be found: a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community but, in doing so, blows her cover. Soon, the gang is giving chase, only to find them up against Deloris and the power of her newly found sisterhood. Filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story get ready to sing their praises at the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on June 7 & 8. Tickets are £15 (concessions £13) on 01780 766455.

Complete Madness Get ready to take One Step Beyond as Sweeney Entertainments bring us a night of Complete Madness at the Key Theatre on Thursday June 13. The 5-piece band will take you on a musical journey through the story of one of Britain's most memorable, visual and fun bands. Complete with crazy costumes, comedy and chirpy banter, Complete Madness invite you to their 'House of Fun'. And of course, it features all of our favourites including Baggy Trousers, One Step Beyond, It Must Be Love and Driving In My Car. It promises to be a riot from beginning to end. It’ll be like a night out at the City’s much loved Reflex bar back in the day – but live. Tickets are £24.50 on 01733 207239.

4Ever Hollywood As a huge fan of the West End and all things Hollywood – here’s one I’m particularly looking forward to. 4Ever Hollywood is an all singing, all dancing show celebrating four fabulous decades of timeless tunes and fancy footwork of the silver screen legends with songs from your fave films. Featuring leading West End performers from Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, The Producers, Anything Goes, Oklahoma, Kiss Me Kate, Guys & Dolls, Sunset Boulevard and much more. See this great show at The Key Theatre on Friday June 28. Tickets are £21.50 on 01733 207239.

The Roses of Eyam Stamford Shoestring Theatre Company will be presenting their epic production of The Roses of Eyam at not only Stamford Arts Centre but also Cornwall’s famous Minack open-air theatre this summer. The resident amateur theatre company had to find 40 actors and musicians to take part in this production of Don Taylor’s epic play The Roses of Eyam, which tells the moving true story of what happened in the Derbyshire village of Eyam in 1665 when a box of clothes from London carried with it the Black Death. This year will be the seventh time they have been invited back to perform at Minack. To research the background to the play, all 40 actors travelled by coach to the village of Eyam to look at the records of the families of victims and survivors of the plague. It was a truly moving experience to visit the museum and to walk around the beautifully preserved village. One unique aspect of their production will be live music, played by a group of talented folk musicians, to set the scene and to create the authentic atmosphere of 17th Century England. Traditional English folk songs have been chosen to fit with the action of the play, so although the events depicted are tragic there is also a lot of joy, dancing and even comedy as the villagers face up to the challenge. The main run of the show will be at Stamford Arts Centre from Tuesday June 4 to Saturday June 8, and there’ll be an outdoor performance in the garden of Stamford’s historic Browne’s Hospital on Sunday June 23 at 2pm as part of the Stamford Festival before they perform at Minack in July. Tickets for all the Stamford performances are available from the Stamford Arts Centre box office on 01780 763203, website www.stamfordartscentre.com.

Peterborough Art Society and Annual Exhibition 2019 Happy Birthday to you, Happy… This year Peterborough Art Society is celebrating its 90th anniversary! The society was formed in 1929, making it one of the oldest in the country. They have a current membership of 73 who are a friendly bunch with a wide range of abilities and expertise, from the novice to a few gifted professionals and are always keen to encourage anyone who may be interested.

It’s a new season at Vivacity Lido Peterborough

They have two annual exhibitions with the main one for this year being held from June 8 - 22 from 10am to 4pm, except on Sundays when it will be open between 1pm and 4pm. Peterborough Cathedral has really stepped things up during the years – coming up with new and exciting ways to get people through the doors. This month is no exception. On Friday June 21 it’s time for one of the most prestigious events of the season, the annual fundraising Nave Dinner. Guests will gather in the medieval Cloisters for canapés and drinks to the accompaniment of the celebrated Esterhazy String Quartet. Then it’s time to dine inside the Cathedral with an elegant dinner beneath the magnificent 13th century ceiling. The inspiring guest speaker will be the writer, journalist and broadcaster John McCarthy CBE who was kidnapped in Lebanon in 1986 by Islamic Jihad and held in captivity until 1991. John will tell his story and share the insights he gained from those harrowing years. So get your glad rags ready and prepare for a truly unique dining experience. Check the cathedral website for tickets.

Get ready to step back in time at city’s Heritage Festival It’s one of the biggest and best events in the city and is one of our favourites – Peterborough Heritage Festival is back on Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16 so get ready to step back in time.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

They’ll love Fiery Jack, the medieval jester with his shows, circus skills and storytelling and there’s plenty to try out too including Have-A-Go Archery. Wander through the cathedral gates and you’ll find everything from Roman centurions to WWII soldiers and historic vehicles with a Medieval knight riding past on the way – it’s like being on a film set, you’ll love it! It’s on from 10am – 5pm each day, visit www.vivacity.org for all the details.

E

very year this fabulous free weekend organised by Vivacity attracts over 30,000 visitors and sees over 300 reenactors recreate living history in the city centre with encampments, displays and exciting battle sequences! It’s the UK's largest multi-period city centre living history festival and will take over the Cathedral precincts and Cathedral Square in the city centre for another year of traditional family fun. There’s a different theme each year and this month there’ll be a distinctly Victorian flavour to proceedings as the Heritage Festival not only looks back over 3,000 years of history, but commemorates 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria. If you’ve loved the TV series, you’ll love this theme so head down and explore the Victorian re-enactor encampment which will see a group of Victorian Volunteer Rifle Corps preparing to defend us from the potential threat of war with France. These were common in the time and were essentially the Home Guard of their era - a kind of Victorian Dad's Army! They were actually a precursor to the Territorial Army. 10 www.espmag.co.uk

The Victorians were particularly interested in Folklore and popular legend so get ready to listen to our very own Victorian Folklorist who’ll show you different folk traditions from Peterborough, the Fens and beyond. There will also be a Victorian magician performing close-up magic and spellbinding tricks as part of the children's area. New this year is a Steampunk display in the main arena, expanding on The Clockwork Infirmary that’s been held at the Museum in previous years. They’ll be demonstrating facets of Victorianainspired science fiction and art with stalls available to purchase memorabilia at the Museum. Take a walk along ‘Heritage Street’ which builds on the Cultural Treasures tent from 2018, which will have a town square of local history stalls and representatives from local community groups displaying their heritage and offering things to see, do and buy. We love this festival because everywhere you turn you’re transported into a different era and the re-enactors are always so keen to tell you more about the time periods they’re so passionate about. It’s amazing to see history brought to life and there’s so much to learn and enjoy. It’s a great one for families too with loads for the kids to get excited about – and did we mention it’s free?!

CATHEDRAL EVENTS As part of the Heritage Festival fun Peterborough Cathedral is also hosting some special events. On Saturday June 15 there’ll be Tower Top Climbs between 10am and 4pm giving you a unique opportunity to view the Festival and the city from this amazing view point. Take a 30-40 minute tour every hour, on the hour. The climbs will involve a straight climb up the steps of the northwest tower onto the central tower outside, for stunning views across the city. Tickets are £5 or £16 for a group of four. Ages 8+ only. Restrictions apply. Book in advance on www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.

FILM SCREENINGS There will also be some special film screenings inside the Cathedral on Saturday June 15 with the animation Brave showing at 2pm followed by a screening of A Knight's Tale starring Heath Ledger at 6.30pm. Tickets are £5 per person. Book on www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk or call 01733 355315 / 452336.

Oundle International Festival

Peterborough Italian Festival

Photos: Chris Brudenell

I’ll be putting my diet on hold for a couple of days next month. Fellow Mediterranean food lovers are also being urged to set dates in their diaries for one of the biggest celebrations of Italian culture in the country. The eleventh annual Peterborough Italian Festival will be held in Cathedral Square this summer and making a special guest appearance is one of the UK’s bestloved chefs, Gennaro Contaldo. The hugely popular event has traditionally been held in September, but this year’s festival will take place on Saturday July 6 and Sunday July 7. Gennaro, who’s famed for teaching his protege Jamie Oliver all he knows about Italian cooking, will share his culinary expertise and hold cooking demonstrations. The free event is organised by Peterborough's Italian Community Association and supported by Peterborough City Council, offering a wide range of tantalising sweet and savoury food. Gennaro will be present on the Sunday and his appearance adds to a bumper list of activities planned for both days – with full details to be announced closer to the event. As in previous years the Mediterranean extravaganza will also feature an Italian market, classic Italian cars and motorcycles, confectionery, ice-cream, pasta, football, scooters and much more. The festival runs from 12noon ‘til 5pm on both days and we’ll have more in our next issue.

12 www.espmag.co.uk

We’re all getting excited for another big festival taking place next month as the Oundle International Festival brings us a fantastic range of entertainment for all tastes. From a jig at the Ceilidh through to jazz and then the finale at the Party at the Wharf with ABBAMANIA there’s music and entertainment of all kinds from July 4-14. The event’s back for its 35th year with a programme so broad in appeal that there has to be something for you in the mix! They’ll be welcoming back Kathryn Tickell with her band The Darkening, Ronnie Scotts’ All Stars make another welcome return plus there’s plenty for classical music fans to enjoy as well. Outdoor events feature heavily this year with two theatrical productions for families old and young: introducing a particularly ‘green’ performance of Much Ado About Nothing, The Handlebards arrive carrying all their props and costumes on bicycles in preparation for a brilliant Shakespearean experience in front of Lyveden’s National Trust Elizabethan property. Heartbreak Productions return to Barnwell Country Park, this time with Gansta’ Granny, another sell out adaptation of a David Walliams’ best seller. As part of the annual Oundle on Show weekend, Barnwell Country Park will also be hosting their sixth Music in the Park featuring regional brass bands throughout the day. The big one is the Party on the Wharf with local bands Likuid Lemon and the ever popular Acoustic Supper Club along with slick and sophisticated Funk Soul Brother all warming you up for the headline act, none other than ABBAMANIA. Early bird tickets are available up to June 22. Many events sell out in advance so for tickets and more details head to www.oundlefestival.org.uk.

Festival on the Green What’s that I hear you ask? Just can’t get enough of festivals? You want more? Well, the Botolph Festival is returning once again with old and new attractions to keep the whole family entertained on June 14, 15 & 16. The infamous Snail Race Night is back with competitive cartoon creatures on the big screen. There’ll be children’s activities, including steam train rides, craft stalls and the festival’s ‘pop-up beer garden’ all on offer. There’ll be a soft drinks stand plus the Giddy Aunt’s Gin & Prosecco stall for grownups. Snail Shell Café will serve hot drinks and slush and Richard the Fenland Roaster returns with his delicious food.

NO MORE LUMPY WITH RUMPY PUMPY Apparently, we burn five calories a minute during sex, which is four more than watching TV. Five calories a fortnight result - I’ll take that.

Shows are Tonic for Car Grieving

Maxey Car Show

Stepping out with Graziano Both of Strictly Come Dancing’s Italian stallions were in town recently when they starred in separate shows at The Cresset. Giovanni Pernice was too busy charming the ladies to give me a second look but Graziano Di Prima took time out and posed with me for a selfie. He was shorter than he looks on TV and not as Adonis-like as he appears on the show. His teeth were actually a standard shade of yellow like normal human beings. He was just an ordinary, pleasant 25-year-old guy. Based on this observation – and the fact I can moonwalk – I’ve applied for this year’s Strictly because of my local ‘celebrity’ status. Maybe the show can make me look like Gino D’Acampo?

CIAOS OUT: 14 www.espmag.co.uk

I recently parted with my beloved car of seven years and I’m not afraid to admit that I’m struggling with the grieving process. I weighed up all the pros and cons and she had to go – I made a decision with my head and not my heart. The good news is I’ve replaced her with a money pit that’ll break down every week and the decision to purchase my new baby (can’t you tell I don’t have children) was made with my heart, not my head. Work that one out. But I’m still struggling with the void my former baby has left in my petrolhead life, so going to as many car shows as I can this summer will go some way to help fill that gap. The local classic car scene has always been particularly vibrant with a good handful of shows to enjoy. Here’s a few you’ll most probably see me either crying or drooling at (if I manage to get there without calling the RAC).

Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle Festival – June 1 and 2: The former city council-run event is now organised by the Armed Forces Committee and it’s being held at Peterborough Lions Rugby Club. Bourne Classic Car and Bike Show – June 16: Always a good variety of vehicles, especially motorbikes. Lots of stands and family activities. Good Father’s Day treat. Baston Car & Bike Show – July 7: This show will be held in the grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle for the first time. Classic and modern cars are usually on display with dealerships in attendance too. Maxey Classic Car & Bike Show – August 10: Now in its 18th year and always attracts a good selection of two and four-wheeled vehicles. There’s live music, a real ale bar, a barbecue and children’s amusements. Stamford Car Show – August 25: Another long-established show that attracts an eclectic mix of vehicles and with plenty of things to do for the family.

Bradley @ Halfords - top job fella Angelo - look after my baby! Gary - let’s ride for a coffee next time Dom - fancy showing at Bourne? Tom - office latest? Dave - it’s boat time!

MY

WORD OF THE MONTH

AIRPORTS Most of us I’m sure will be at one this summer and here’s a reminder why I love them so much: Rip-off parking, squealing suitcase wheels, tasteless and ice-cold Boots sandwiches, sitting next to someone’s feet, five seconds to get to your gate, furthest gate away, grumpy cleaners, people spraying perfume in your face, no chance to win that supercar, 100 school trips, rancid toilets and duty not free.

A bit Wonky after a Few Up until recently my experiences of real ales haven’t been that good. The ones I’ve tried either smell of sick or smoked haddock and they’re usually murkier than Hunstanton sea water. But it’s National Beer Day on June 15 and I think I’ve turned the corner on my journey to find an ale I can drink without it passing through the other end the same colour it went in. According to the BMJ (British Medical Journal) teetotallers have a 45% higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s than drinkers who consumed up to 14 units of alcohol a week (the standard guideline amount). So, I’ve decided to get myself up to the required 14 units and experimented in a couple of our city centre micro-pubs with some success, which is why I could order a pint with confidence at the Wonky Donkey on Fletton High Street. I can’t remember what it was called but it was light, easy down the hatchet and smelled like a girl that works in the John Lewis perfumery. My Wonky posse had chosen wisely too, so it was smiles all round for a top watering hole. When’s the next session boys?

Am I the only One? I might as well come straight out with it. I’ve never seen Game of Thrones. And I’ll no doubt get grief for my next statement: I don’t intend to watch it either. Ask me why and my lame answer is that I can’t be bothered. It’s got to the point where I’m the only person on the planet who’s never watched it and if I started now it’ll be like ‘He’s so last year’. Anyway, some colleagues of mine got all excited when a chair / throne thing turned up in Queensgate Shopping Centre for a weekend. Hundreds queued just so they could sit on it while the only throne I was queuing for at the time was in the gent’s toilets at Stansted Airport. I’ve never seen Lost Boys either. Is that a crime too?

JOIN US @ THE DRAGON BOAT RACE I only do water when it comes to having a shower but even I am excited about this month's annual Dragon Boat Race on Saturday June 8. ESP has been the event's media partner for the last three years and surprise surprise it's sold out during this time with the maximum number of companies taking part. This magazine's Motley Crew of 'rowers' will once again be represented at the rowing lake, as they splash around against other companies including Holiday Inn Peterborough West, Buckles Solicitors LLP, Midco Care, Whirlpool and main sponsors IKEA. Organised by Gable Events and compered by Connect FM, the race raises vital funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Last year the event raised a recordbreaking £35,000! This meant that Sue Ryder nurses, care staff and support teams were able to give more care to more local people. So, if you want to see some of our crew paddle like their lives depend on it (I'm sure Darren's been training all year and Mikey's using it to burn off his Domino's addiction) then get yourselves down to the rowing lake and send us your photos!

Fashion with Ferne Recently ESP headed down to the launch of Queensgate’s big Summer in the City fashion event, for a sneak peek at what trends we should be looking out for when shopping for our summer wardrobe. Former TOWIE star Ferne McCann was there to launch it, and spoke to ESP columnist Rachael, (check out more from her chat with Ferne in her Health and Beauty column). Ferne made sure to wear clothes that were available for everyone to buy right now in Queensgate – a blouse from River Island and denim skirt from Top Shop. Ferne said, “Denim skirts are everywhere, and so in fashion for the summer. This paired with my new summer hairstyle and I feel bang on trend.” Ferne talked ESP through some of her ‘top picks’ of summer favourites that are on sale in Queensgate right now!

Satin tie shirt from Top Shop - £35 In a cool champagne shade – soo versatile – perfect for work or dressing down with jeans in the evening.

Little white Tegan halter dress from Superdry - £54.99

Lady in Red Isabella wrap tea dress from Joules - £74.95

A little bit flirty with this halter neck – great for afternoons sitting outside round the BBQ and paired with a denim jacket.

This little wrap around number will catch the eye, with stunning red fabric it’s a must-have. Perfect for a summer afternoon tea trip!

Keep an eye on the Queensgate Facebook page for future events, and for further news on the new Skechers store opening soon! 16 www.espmag.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW WE DID THIS?

Once the sun comes out it make us fancy a picnic so it’s good to hear that Riverford organic farm are bringing back their picnic and walking tours to Sacrewell. From this month there’s the chance to see, smell and taste produce on local walking tours starting on June 12 with more planned for July 3, August 7 and September 4. You can get some exercise, spot some wildlife, learn about the farm and of course – eat! The walks are followed by a Riverford picnic dinner made using fresh seasonal ingredients. Tickets are priced at £8 for adults and £4 for children between 5 and 12 years old, there’s no charge for under 5s. Nigel Venni, who helps to run the farm at Sacrewell, says the walks are a chance to experience the farm at its best: “Each week we deliver boxes of veg and other organic produce across Peterborough so we thought it would be a great idea to throw our doors open so that people can see

what we do for themselves. During summer, the farm is alive with activity and it’s the one time of the year when we plant, pick and sow crops all at once – it’s quite a sight. Because our produce is organic, guests will be able to taste our crops straight off the stalk.” If you like wildlife there’s plenty to see too – “Our farm at Sacrewell is home to a number of rare and endangered species,” says Nigel. “Butterflies brown argus and small heath have both been spotted on our farm, as have the birds reed bunting and yellowhammer. We also have flourishing communities of skylark and lapwing, despite their levels declining nationally.” Unfortunately as the walks are around crops, you can’t take your four legged friends on this one and small children might find it hard going, it isn’t suitable for wheelchair users either. Find out more and book tickets at www.riverford.co.uk/walkssacrewell or call 01803 227426.

It’ll be a ticketed, intimate event including talks from the likes of vegan Olympic athlete Fiona Oakes, vegan internet sensations Cath Kendall and Jordan Steven along with a representative from Extinction Rebellion. Along with those speakers, and more, there will be a full programme of interactive workshops, including guided meditation, yoga, cacao ceremonies, henna and nature crafting. As if this isn’t enough, there’ll be a stage of live music featuring local acts such as Opaque, A Great Notion and Pennyless as well as ethical national names including The Lartey Sisters and The High Breed. A Thrive spokesman said: “We intend to marry the benefits of a plantbased diet with notions of ethical wellbeing at a festival promoting a sustainable future, a vegan lifestyle and family entertainment in relaxing and beautiful surroundings. The Christmas festival will return in November, but in the meantime, we wanted to bring a more exclusive, interactive and intimate experience – and what better time to do it than on Solstice weekend?” Tickets are £22 for adults and £18 for 11-16-year-olds. Under-11s go free with a ticket-holding adult. They are available from www.eventbrite.com/e/thrive-vegan-summer-festival-tickets. Contact thriveveganfestival@gmail.com.

Oundle Food Festival

It’s the one local foodies have been waiting for and it’s certainly a tasty day out! The Oundle Food Festival takes place on Saturday June 22 and will see the town centre packed with delicious treats. There’ll be over 75 food, drink and product stalls in a huge street market so more than enough to taste, try and buy! It features many of the region’s finest independent food and drink producers as well as

makers of kitchenware throughout the town's Market Place and New Street. They’re all passionate about what they do, and the market provides a chance to understand and sample, or try out their products. It’s free admission with music and entertainment to add to the day. There are events and offers running throughout June too so make sure you visit www.oundlefoodfestival.co.uk so you don’t miss out.

They’ve been famous for their roast dinners for 14 years in the city and now Sundays roast dinner carvery has opened in Cathedral Precincts in the Becket Chapel. Now though, it’s not just delicious roasties on the menu but also breakfasts and afternoon teas – all home-cooked and using fresh local produce. Proprietor David Beever said he and his team are excited about the new venture – “This is a fantastic location. It’s also a great match between two organisations who both like to see the joys of Sunday (in our case Sunday lunch) roll out through the whole week! It has been lovely to see some of our former regular customers return, as well as to meet some new ones.” Sundays also offer takeaway or eat-in roast meat rolls, as well as vegetarian options.

The Wheatsheaf in Titchmarsh If you’re looking for somewhere good to dine and drink just outside the city limits The Wheatsheaf at Titchmarsh is one to visit – and you might just recognise a familiar face at the bar. Stuart Wright, who many people may remember from the Brewery Tap and Charters in Peterborough has taken over the business with his wife Frankie. It had been managed by the Proper Pub Co for several months but Stuart and Frankie’s company Pub24 Ltd took over ownership in March. They’re now well on their way to breathing new life into the pub introducing new craft beers, new food dishes, and have refurbished some of the interior which is looking great. They also have a beautiful garden to drink and dine in. The team’s headed up by manager Gemma Southern and they pride themselves on great customer interaction and hospitality. There’s no stuffiness or pretentions here – instead they’re happy to have a laugh and go that extra mile to accommodate customers. Food wise the menu encompasses the likes of vegetarian, vegan & gluten free, and it’s prepared in-house as much as possible. You can relax, eat, drink and socialise in the extensive lounge and dining rooms. The bar is widely stocked with some fantastic wines from Amps in Oundle, real ales, craft beers, traditional heritage ciders & artisan gins. Accompanied children and well behaved dogs are positively encouraged and as it’s only half an hour from the city centre why not make a visit? Yaxley Festival You might have needed your brolly at times but the hugely popular Yaxley Festival ended on a high note as the sun came out and so did the crowds. With two music stages featuring great local bands like Idolising Nova and Children of the Revolution along with many more, a fun fair, stalls and a range of food and drink outlets there was no shortage of entertainment. This free festival certainly deserves its popularity and ESP’s photographer Mike Harris captured the crowds soaking up the sun. You can see all of our Paparazzi photos on our Facebook page.

Pop star Jessie J is back on the box and on our ESP front cover! The singer with attitude and powerhouse vocals will be voicing her thoughts on some fresh young talent as she takes up the fourth red chair in The Voice Kids this month.

P

eterborough’s had its fair share of local talent on The Voice, but often it’s the youngsters who really surprise the judges in the younger version of the hit TV entertainment show. The Voice Kids returns to ITV this month and there's a new kid on the block as multi-platinum selling singer Jessie J gets ready to press the big red button alongside returning coaches, Will.i.am, Pixie Lott and Danny Jones. Jessie J has been touring extensively all over the world promoting her album R.O.S.E and will be returning for a couple of UK dates scheduled for mid July. Now she’s back on our screens as the show returns for a third series as talented youngsters try to impress the four coaches as they sing for the star panel. Each coach will be looking for stars of the future, aged 7-14, to fill the nine spots on their teams

when the series kicks off with the Blind Auditions. Emma Willis is again hosting the show and, throughout the Blind Auditions, cheering on from the wings as she joins with the hopefuls’ founder fan club members – their friends and families. Each coach has nine places on their teams to fill as they head into the Blind Auditions searching for the next generation of superstar singers. For the first time both solo singers and double acts are eligible to sing their hearts out in a bid to get a coveted chair turn. After each performance, regardless of whether they’ve won a place with Will, Danny, Pixie or Jessie, all four coaches will turn to give the singers words of advice and encouragement.

Once the teams are complete, the coaching will begin as the youngsters work hard in the hope of making it through The Battles. Each Battle will see three acts per team sing off for a place in the semi-final. There are no steals for the coaches in this competition so the youngsters will be going all out to make sure they’re one of just three acts their coach will put through to the semifinal. At the semi-final, those singers will be singing to impress their coaches for one last time as each coach selects just one act per team to make it to the live final and then the ultimate decision will be in the hands of us, the viewers at home. The final four will perform in the live final in the hope of winning the public vote. Win the competition and they’ll secure a £30,000 bursary towards their musical education as well as a family holiday to Orlando courtesy of Universal Studios and Norwegian Air. Not bad eh? The Voice Kids is an ITV Studios production of a Talpa format.

X Factor star returns to Madagascar – The Musical There are some exciting shows coming up at Peterborough New Theatre on Broadway and one we’re looking forward to in the autumn has a special star on board again. X Factor winner Matt Terry will continue in the role of Alex the Lion, on the critically acclaimed UK tour. Since winning X Factor, Matt’s been non-stop, recording music all over the world, and releasing his debut album Trouble in November 2017. His first single from the album, Sucker For You has had nearly 60 million streams on Spotify. After Sucker For You, Matt went back to his Spanish childhood by featuring on Enrique Iglesias’s smash single, Subeme La Radio alongside Sean Paul. Matt’s role in Madagascar has been hailed as a triumphant debut theatre performance receiving 5 star reviews across the tour. The cast are claiming it’s the best one yet – but they’ll have to go some way to better Toy Story 3 – so fingers are firmly-crossed nine years has been worth the wait.

After the emotional ending to the exceptional Pixar-animated trilogy – only a fool would have thought that Disney wouldn’t cash in once again years later. And that’s exactly what they’ve done, and to be honest after the sensational much-loved first three films – no-one’s complaining. Some years after Andy gave his toys away to Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw), Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie

SMALLER CLASS SIZES with a typical size of around 20-25 students compared to universities who may have 100+ students in lectures.

UCP PROVIDES A DIFFERENT WAY OF STUDYING A DEGREE If you have not yet decided if or where you want to study a degree in September 2019, there is still time to plan how you can improve your chosen career path.

U

niversity Centre Peterborough (UCP) are able to offer a unique proposition compared to other universities with many school leavers now choosing to stay in Peterborough or move from all over the UK. As the city is well connected with excellent road and rail links, it also makes is easier for commuter students to make the most of what UCP provides. With Peterborough being the fourth fastest growing city in the UK, it makes sense to consider studying locally to get ahead and improve your job prospects locally. There is a wide range of courses to study at UCP which are all designed to link to job opportunities, especially in the local area. As UCP work with local employers, students can often get a head start and secure full time employment before they graduate. Every year, hundreds of students graduate from UCP with many choosing to stay in the local area, which benefit local businesses by employing skilled

and career ready graduates with students getting jobs related to the course they studied. So what makes University Centre Peterborough so different? You get excellent teaching facilities and dedicated lecturers as you would expect when studying a degree, but it’s the way they can deliver the courses which makes them offer such an attractive proposition. STUDY IN FULL DAYS Due to its smaller size, UCP are able to timetable the majority of courses as two full days a week. Compared to other larger universities who have to timetable their lecturers and seminars across the whole week with gaps in the timetable, UCP students come in for full days which gives them opportunities to find a work placement, internship or time to volunteer which will improve employability after they graduate. Mature students with personal or family commitments can then find is easier to accommodate time to study.

i

SMALLER CLASS SIZES AND INDIVIDUAL SUPPORT Students get to study in smaller classes with a typical size of around 20-25 students compared to universities who may have 100+ students in lectures. Smaller groups offer more opportunity for students to ask questions or engage with lecturers, with fewer pressures. That means the lecturers get to know who you are, can offer oneto-one tutorial times, but also that you can get to know the lecturers better so they can support you. FLEXIBLE STUDY OPTIONS Whilst all courses start in September there are many courses which give you the option of starting in January so there is flexibility of when you can choose to start. If the thought and practicability of studying fulltime is not convenient then you could choose to study part-time over 4 years as opposed to 3 years for a full-time degree.

CHOOSE FROM THE FOLLOWING COURSES There are still limited spaces on the following courses starting in September 2019. Some degrees can also be started in January 2020. If you want to start a course in September 2020 there are even more degrees available. Undergraduates Degrees • Accounting and Finance • Biological Sciences • Business Management • Business Management with Human Resources • Business Management with Marketing • Computing and Information Systems • Criminology • Digital Arts • Early Years and Education • Education Studies Top-up • English Literature • English with Creative Writing • Forensic Investigation • Journalism • Media Production • Psychosocial Studies • Sociology • Sport and Exercise Science Higher Education Courses • HNC/D Civil Engineering • HNC Construction • HNC/D Engineering

ESP’s Rachael Church has all the latest health and beauty news…

rachael.church@espmag.co.uk

Father’s Day is the perfect time to say ‘thank you’ to that special guy in your life. With so many gift options in Peterborough alone, here are our thoughts on what to pick up in time for that special Sunday.

Indulge Dad Hotel Chocolat wouldn’t usually be associated with ‘health and beauty’ – but did you know they do a pampering range perfect for guys too? As part of the Rabot 1745 selection in the Queensgate store there are some great shower gels and handcreams. And if that’s not his cup of tea, pick up some bottles of their ‘coca blonde’ beer or cocoa gin instead!

Côte Brasserie: Yes, Côte do a French breakfast! And it’s great. Two scrambled eggs, boudin noir, French streaky bacon, and toasted brioche. Healthy enough we say.

Take Dad out for a ‘healthy’ breakfast

Male grooming products should be in every man’s bathroom cabinet. So, make sure dad is fully stocked up. We love:

If food is the way to your dad’s heart, there are plenty of local places that do great healthy breakfast options, if he’s still worrying about his summer body. ESP loves: Argo Lounge, Bridge Street: Try the Halloumi and sweetcorn pancake for something a bit different Frankie and Benny’s: Smashed avocado and poached eggs with either bacon or salmon. Yes please!

Pamper him

L’Oréal: Check out their new pure charcoal range for men – everything from cleansers, moisturisers and their first ever face masks for the chaps! ELEMIS: If you fancy splashing out, the Men’s ‘Hydrate and Revitalise’ duo is on offer as a pair at £45 (worth £72). Proven to reduce wrinkles up to 37%, so really, a bargain!

Ladies! June 10 is nationaL cervicaL screening awareness week! Cervical cancer is the most common form of cancer in women under 35 with two women in the UK per day dying from the disease. Regular cervical screening appointments can prevent up to 75% of instances of cervical cancer, saving 5,000 lives per year. That’s the stats... the message is simple. As many of us as possible need to mention this to friends, family or even work colleagues. When was your last test, have you missed one? If so, ring this week, get one booked in! 36 www.espmag.co.uk

Fern sHares Her beauty tips Revently TOWIE’s Fern McCann came to Queensgate for the day to meet fans and share some of her fashion tips at the centre’s big Summer in the City event. While she was there, ESP took the opportunity to ask about her health and beauty routine! On being a new mum and still looking great: “Being a mum has changed my beauty routines. Obviously, you have less time so you just have to cut back on all the products. I’m no longer laying on creams and foundations, and then concealer, and then contouring, I just don’t have the time. So, I use products like MAC face and body, and things that are lighter and easier to apply. But I make up for that lack of time with a really good bedtime routine for when she is asleep. I take all my make-up off really well and use good night creams. It’s so important with a young child and lack of sleep to make sure you take care of your skin.” On what make-up items she absolutely can’t live without: “I’m going to have to pick two things. My lip gloss, and my eyebrow pencil. I mean, without one or the other I might look really weird. Again, for my eyebrow pencil I use MAC – it’s so good to have a defined but fluffy brow to make you look more youthful. And any really nice lip gloss or balm.” On looking after her hair: “I have just had these bangs put in as I love mixing it up and changing styles, but the rest of my hair is currently extensions. Being a hairdresser, I know how important it is to look after bleached hair, and I would recommend Olaplex products to keep it looking fab.” www.espmag.co.uk

Get some get up and glow with more H2O...

Water therapy is also used for rehabilitation and much more. A quick note of caution – excess water can be dangerous and cause a condition known as hyponatremia – whilst rare it does happen when you over consume water as some athletes do in training. In health,

We can live without food for weeks but only a few days without water, yet so many of us still don’t keep hydrated.

darker. If you eat beetroot then it will look a lovely tinge of pink!

Water is essential for every chemical reaction in our body, flushing wastes out, carrying nutrients to our cells water also supports weight loss, aids in digestion, keeps joints fluid and much more.

CAUSES

Dehydration is a lack of water which can slow down our metabolism, interfere with our electrolytes, and increases toxicity as the body isn’t clearing through our kidneys. Many health issues appear worse when we’re dehydrated such as arthritis, headaches, migraines and more.

OTHER SYMPTOMS Over eating can be a symptom of dehydration as well as: Muscle cramps Dry skin, hair Fatigue

Thirst is the obvious sign but often you’re likely to reach for a fizzy or other sugar laden drink or a cup of tea rather than the most natural fluid designed for us which is pure water.

Obviously not drinking enough water to replace our never ending needs is the cause, but how we lose it may not be so obvious. We lose water daily through urine, breathing and sweating so we need to replace our water daily. Sorry, but coffee, tea and fizzy drinks that contain caffeine actually have a diuretic effect so we actually lose water that way! Alcohol, excess animal products, too much salt in our diet, exercise and certain drugs are also to blame. Drinking about 2 litres is what is generally advised but this can vary from person to person. If you’re more sedentary, eat a lot of fruits, raw veggies and other raw foods you may need less.

Constipation, bloating and much more….

However, if you do lots of exercise, eat a diet high in meat and salty foods, eat very little raw foods, or live in a hot climate you will need more water, so how much water to drink should not be generalised but personalised.

SIGNS

HOW TO HYDRATE

When you pop to the loo, check the colour of your urine – ideally it should look a light straw colour (not clear as water), the darker it is the more dehydrated you are. There are exceptions to this such as when you’re deep fasting when it will look

There are many ways to hydrate the body (whilst lessening some of the practices that can dehydrate you).

Light headedness Impatience, irritability, mood swings Difficulty in concentrating

38 www.espmag.co.uk

Start each morning with a glass of water before reaching for your first cuppa of the day.

Have a bottle (ideally not a single use plastic bottle) in sight, that way you can sip during the day. Increase your intake of raw foods such as fruits and vegetables – think smoothies and juices where you can get a concentrated amount. Higher water fruits/veggies such as cucumbers, celery, watermelon, grapes and peppers are excellent hydrators. If you enjoy a coffee during the day, follow it up with a glass of water, and certainly increase your water if you’ve had alcohol as this steals water from the body!

HYDROTHERAPY It’s not just drinking the water that is good for health, using water as therapy has been around for centuries such as: Ocean or salt water for wound healing Listening to water sounds for calming Float tanks for relaxation and easing muscle pains Irrigation for blocked sinuses Hot/cold water plunging Specific baths for various ailments such as ginger baths to help with viruses, or dandelion baths to extract toxins and many more that have been used as natural healing methods Colon Hydrotherapy – to gently remove impacted wastes, mucous and excess gasses with warm water

Peterborough Celebrates Reading The Peterborough Celebrates campaign launched to promote 900 years of our amazing cathedral and saw some incredible events in the city last year – we’re now pleased to say that the campaign continues with Vivacity taking over the banner to celebrate the Year of Reading.

E

SP has been a proud supporter throughout – after all we’ve spent 20 years celebrating all the good stuff Peterborough has to offer, and we’re excited there is so much more to come this time to boost reading and literacy in the city. This exciting campaign aims to inspire Peterborough to enjoy reading more, and to put on fun and exciting reading-related activities in A Year of Reading from September 2019 - September 2020. The Peterborough Celebrates Reading campaign is open to everyone and is a chance to get behind the celebrations and support them in whatever way you’d like. Peterborough Celebrates Reading will launch to the public with a family friendly event of storytelling and children's activities on Saturday June 22 from 11am-3pm. But

Peterborough Celebrates Reading Launch

first we caught up with Richard Hunt Director of Culture at Vivacity to find out more. “Peterborough Celebrates Reading is a year long initiative to improve the reading of children in Peterborough,” Richard explained. “As a city we are consistently at the bottom of all the league tables when it comes to reading and we want to do something to change that. We started out with the Vision for Reading which is a document that sets out how Peterborough City Council, Vivacity, the National Literacy Trust and other partners will work together. We are encouraging organisations in the city to sign our reading pledge on the back of the document.

These range from the world's longest poem being created in the city, to storytelling picnics, artists and illustrators in schools...

Free family friendly event with storytelling and children's activities from 11am – 3pm. The Children's Book Bus will be in Cathedral Square and there’ll be free books to help launch this Year of Reading. There’ll be a range of fun activities on offer, and you can even join the library. Head along to find out more about Peterborough Celebrates Reading and how you can get involved in the coming months. 40 www.espmag.co.uk

“In the academic year 2019-2020 (so June 2019 to August 2020) we will be holding events and activities designed to get everyone reading. These range from the world's longest poem being created in the city, to storytelling picnics, artists and illustrators in schools and community venues, festivals, exhibitions, a book bench trail and much more.” Partners on board so far include Vivacity, Peterborough City Council, National Literacy Trust, Metal, Queensgate, Railworld, Eastern Angles and a whole host of community groups around the city and they’d love it if you could get involved too. As well as sponsorship opportunities there are plenty of ways everyone can get behind this great campaign. You could link up your existing activities or events and brand them up as part of the Year of Reading. Any events that will be part of Peterborough Celebrates Reading will feature on the website and social media. If you have ideas for more ambitious events just get in touch with Vivacity. One of the sponsorship opportunities for the year is for a special book bench trail which will see BookBench sculpture seats decorated in literary inspired designs. These will then form a trail around the city. Families will be able to follow the trail to discover the benches and take part in a series of fun activities and events around them. This will be part of the finale for Peterborough Celebrates Reading and if you’d like to sponsor one just contact Darranda Rowswell at the Literacy Trust on 020 7840 9553 or email darranda.rowswell@literacytrust.org.uk.

July 13 - September 7

Summer Reading Challenge Space Chase is the theme of this year's Summer Reading Challenge. Get the kids reading over the summer with Vivacity’s spacethemed Summer Reading Challenge in all Peterborough libraries. Children can join from Saturday July 13, and will collect stickers and giveaways along the way. Children who read six or more library books over the summer will receive a certificate presented at school in the autumn term. www.vivacity.org/library-archives/summer-reading-challenge/

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Footballers I always find writing a column for the June edition of ESP quite difficult because it’s the one month of the year where there’s nothing to report on the pitch. However, off it, we welcome Craig David as the first of two concerts this summer at the ABAX Stadium. I’ve already spoken extensively of the importance of off the field matters in terms of the Schools Initiative, getting into the community and essentially attracting the next wave of supporters to back the Posh, but I wanted to use this column to mention another part of our football club that’s tasted success this term. Our Posh Ladies side were winners of the County Cup (for the first time) and finished as runners-up in their league, massively overachieving in terms of their realistic aims and ambitions at the start of the season. They were able to celebrate that success with a game against Solihull Moors at the ABAX Stadium at the back end of May in front of a good crowd.

Phil Neville’s Lionesses are among the favourites for the competition and were the talk of the town when they announced their squad with video messages from celebrities, footballers, singers, presenters and even Prince William on social media. Posh Ladies manager Kathryn Lusk believes the tournament will be a huge inspiration to the next generation both at local and national level. “The game is growing. The reason we introduced a game at the ABAX Stadium was because it was an opportunity to showcase what we do and what women’s football is all about. We want to try and inspire the next generation.

At the football club we have had contact from a number of parents suggesting that their daughters have become fans of the game through a first time experience at the ABAX Stadium. In fact, one email we received suggested that her first experience has made her fall in love with the game, she is now playing for her school team and is looking into the possibility of playing for a team away from education. That is always a great story to hear. We know we have a responsibility as a football club to inspire as well as entertain. The Ladies have made great strides at the football club and we are very proud of their achievements. You can find out more about our set-up at www.theposh.com or for further information email jenna.lusk@theposh.com.

It was important to try and engage the community with that fixture because this month (June) is the start of the Women’s World

Cup in France. We know that at major tournaments, in whatever sport it may be, there’s a spike in participation and I personally believe this could well be a watershed moment for the sport.

“The game will continue to grow, there are a lot of good things going on in the women’s game, it is about making sure everyone has a platform to play, whether that is at school, at grassroots clubs or a professional environment. I think the World Cup will always be the biggest stage to do that and I am sure it will be an amazing tournament.”

The ESP Comedy Guide

Sarah Slack brings us the ESP guide to where the laughs are at this month…

ESP at Alternative Comedy Gig Guide Comedy Now Last month there was a landmark academic conference held at the University of Kent to mark 40 years since the opening of the Comedy Store in London, a date seen by many to be the birth of the alternative comedy movement.

B

y merely being in the right place at the right time, I managed to get myself not only a chance to attend the conference, but I also blagged a spot on the conference schedule. This meant not only did I have to come up with a 20 minute presentation, but I also had to deliver my presentation in front of a group of academics and industry experts, plus answer questions about my presentation afterwards. My presentation discussed the current equivalents of modern alternative comedy by highlighting key figures such as Adam Larter and John-Luke Roberts whilst also promoting the significance and importance of comedy collectives such as Consignia, ACMS and Weirdos for acting as positive platforms for performers who can feel confident in pushing the boundaries of comedy conventions. If I could’ve done it differently I would’ve definitely included more female alternative figures, including Harriet Braine, Helen Duff and Lazy Susan, and I admit I may have fumbled across the Q&A section a bit, but if this introverted comedy nerd can deliver a presentation at an academic conference, then anyone can! For more information on the Alternative Comedy Now conference, make sure you check out my two day recap of the conference by visiting the British Comedy Guide website at www.comedy.co.uk.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says...

I also recently grabbed the opportunity to see John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett at Stamford Arts Centre. They’re an acquired taste and obviously time has slowed them down from their early days. However, they’re still left field with Barratt using an adapted brown wheely bin as a foot pedal for his guitar and Otway informing us that his song ‘Beware of the Flowers cos I’m Sure They’re Gonna Get You – Yeah’ was voted seventh best song lyrics ever in a BBC poll at the turn of the Millennium. And that it finished above ALL Bob Dylan lyrics and one place below Paul McCartney’s Yesterday. It’s a strange old world!

Time to Chill at Summer Sundays Summer Sundays restarted at Charters on the Town Bridge at the end of May with the Nuggets. All through the summer months, the popular live music venue features a band in the garden every Sunday from 3pm. The schedule for June looks very tempting with Tallawah appearing on June 2, The Midas Touch on June 9, Groove Cartell on June 16, High Rollers on June 23 and Children of the Revolution on June 30. With the big performing area undercover with room for some revellers, and an equally large outside area these Sunday gigs have a real atmosphere of their own. A great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon! Charters have also joined with YPCS the Young People’s Counselling Service, a charity based in the Peterborough area, to raise funds and awareness and they’ll be attending Summer Sundays. They provide free counselling to 11-16 year olds with trained counsellors. https://ypcs.uk/about-us 48 www.espmag.co.uk

Nice to catch a performance from The Guards just recently. They’ve been a fixture on the local live music scene for quite a while. They hold the distinction of being the only band to not turn up for Band of the Week on our Saturday show on Lite FM. However, I believe it to be for good rock ‘n’ roll reasons and they made it up a short time later with a superb live performance in the studio. Good to see they’ve still got it.

It’s go for Glasto for Kissmet Glastonbury beckons once again for Kissmet. The Peterborough based East West musical fusion band perform on the worldwide stage but nothing compares with being invited back to the greatest annual festival. They appear twice during the weekend of June 29/30. Kissmet fuses traditional Indian Punjabi folk music (Bhangra) with western rock music. Their songs are a seamless blend of English, Punjabi and Hindi and the band concentrates very successfully on bridging the cultural gaps in society by working to bring people of all colours and communities together by fusing the positive energy in Eastern and Western music together. ESP has followed their rise to success since the magazine first started 20 years ago. They were formed by three Peterborough born and bred brothers, Ron, Buzz and Max Singh. Ron Singh, performer and manager of the band told ESP – “We grew up in the Cromwell Road area of town, the most multicultural and diverse part of the city. Hence, we were in an environment where all types of music were around us. Our Dad and Uncle ran the local Indian cinema so it was all Punjabi and Bollywood music at home but, at school, we were listening to anything from Genesis to Led Zeppelin and Cream. “Also, around us in the local area, we could hear so many different sounds including the Islamic call to prayer from the local Mosque, the uplifting music of the gospel choir from the Pentecostal Church, Reggae from the Marcus Garvey Rastafarian Centre. Consequently, when it came to writing and performing our own material, we found we could change styles and languages effortlessly.”

As Kissmet are a perfect festival band they’re in demand all over the world and have headlined major festivals in Malaysia, Mexico, Goa, Italy, Ukraine, Portugal, Poland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Norway and Finland. This year’s Glastonbury comes on top of a very busy touring schedule and they’ll be heading to the south coast for a performance at a festival near Hastings on Saturday June 29. Straight from there, they’ll be rushing across country to get to Glastonbury for a midnight performance in the Green Fields area. This will then be followed up by another Glastonbury performance on Sunday June 30. This will be Kissmet’s 6th venture to Glastonbury and the experience still excites them. Buzz told us – “There’s no festival like Glastonbury. It just doesn’t stop, even in the early hours, you can hear music everywhere. Plus, there are so many types of music there, it’s incredible how much variety there is. That’s why we fit in so well. Our performances are packed and we always get the whole place rocking with our unique Bhangra rock vibe. It’s going to be an incredible journey, again.” In Kissmet, the three Singh brothers are joined by Lewis Partridge on drums, Ben Clapinson on guitar and Tom Parkinson on bass. The band are hoping to include some local appearances this year and tell me that they’re writing material for a new album, One People, which should be available by the end of summer. Lil’ Jimmy Reed live in Stamford

Revival for Christian Smith

In my recent visit to Stamford Arts Centre, I was intrigued to see that a real gem of a musician is appearing at the venue on June 7. One of the last surviving performers of classic Louisiana down-home blues, Lil’ Jimmy Reed is bringing his stinging guitar work, gritty vocals and haunting harmonica to Stamford as part of the UK leg of a European tour. His music has won him many awards and an induction into the Blues Hall of Fame. His real name is Leon Atkins but he got his name filling-in one night for blues star Jimmy Reed and that earned him the nickname Lil’ Jimmy Reed and started him on the long path to success. He’s headlined festivals and even shared the stage with the likes of B. B. King and Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland . Lil’ Jimmy is accompanied by the ‘A’ Team, comprising of pianist Bob Hall, widely regarded as the UK’s finest blues and boogie exponent, and his partner Hilary Blythe on bass. A unique opportunity to see a true US Blues survivor.

Popular Cambidgeshire singer/songwriter Christian Smith is due to release his new album, Revival, on June 8. And despite the title, it consists mainly of self-penned tracks. It’s the culmination of years of hard work and dedication to songwriting, including songs such as the recently released Auburn Sky and crowd favourite Chains, and this album has a country rock feel. Christian has been perfecting his talents playing both nationally and internationally for the past five years, including venues such as the O2 Academy Islington, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and Cambridge Junction. Christian has built up a catalogue of original Americana rock style songs that have been well received both by live audiences and achieving radio plays internationally in America, Australia and many other countries. The latest single, Auburn Sky, which is on the new album, reached the top 5 in the iTunes Country Chart. There’s a chance to see Christian perform live at an album release show being held at The Sportsman in Chatteris on the night of June 8. Tickets are available at www.gingerdog.co.uk/concerts

Tickets are available from the Arts Centre on 01780 763203.

Bands Announced for Bourne Festival The band schedule for this year’s Bourne Festival is now finalised. The three day event takes place on the Wellhead field in Bourne between Friday June 7 and Sunday June 9. There’s an impressive total of 18 bands playing over the three days and they’re all listed in our Gig Guide overleaf. My attention went to regular festival band, Last Minute Brigade on Friday night. Saturday Revolver headline in the evening and Filthy Contact are scheduled for an afternoon appearance at 2.15pm. Sunday has a strong finish with Children of the Revolution and Ultra 90s bring the festival to an end from 7pm. In addition to the live music, the festival will host a funfair, craft fair, food court and real ale and cider bars over the weekend. Admission is £3 a day, with a weekend pass costing just £5. Also, it’s free for children under 11. There’ll be 80 real ales and 25 ciders on tap. It’s organised by the Round Table and a lot of hard work goes into making the festival a big weekend for Bourne, and committee member Neil Bothwell told me – “Over 100 people volunteer their time to make the event possible and it has grown every year raising over £250,000 for mainly local charities. Last year was a record year with over £30,000 being distributed to beneficiaries. Weather permitting, we are hoping to do the same this year.” I reckon this is becoming a big event in the area’s social calendar and if the weather is good there doesn’t seem a better place to go for some fantastic live music.
