THIS IS PLANET EARTH
We all marvelled at the Museum of the Moon last year now it’s time to come back down to Earth. nother amazing artwork is set to bring planet Earth inside Peterborough Cathedral this summer from Monday August 19 to Sunday September 15 and we can’t wait! Gaia, is an artwork by Luke Jerram, who brought the huge moon installation to the city last year as papart of the cathedral’s 900th anniversary celebrations and it attracted over 40,000 visitors. It measures seven metres in diameter and features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the earth’s surface (compiled from Visible Earth series, NASA ). It’s an incredible opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions suspended under the central tower of the cathedral, and creates a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. The 3D installation will rotate once every four minutes, 360 times faster than our real planet and is internally lit. During evening opening times a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones will be played, and the lighting of the piece shown to full advantage as dusk falls. By standing 211m away from the artwork, you’lll be able to see the Earth as it appears from the moon. Luke Jerram said: “I was amazed and delighted that so many people came to see Gaia’s sister artwork Museum of the Moon when it was in Peterborough last year. This time visitors will be able to see the Earth as if from space; an incredibly beautiful and precious place. An ecosystem we urgently need to look after – our only home.

TAKE A TOUR AND GET TO KNOW YOUR CITY’S PAST Found yourself at a loose end this summer holiday? Why don’t you take a trip down to Peterborough Museum and join one of the guided walks, including the Hidden Heritage Tour, Crime and Punishment Walk, chilling Ghost Walk and many more. The Hidden Heritage Tour will surprise you with the unknown, intriguing history of our home town. Are you interested in crime cases and notorious criminals? You should definitely go on the Crime and Punishment Walk to find out a bit about Peterborough’s history of crime; if you aren’t so much into true crime, what about learning about the eerie hauntings of Peterborough buildings. This may seem scary but don’t worry your costumed guide will keep you from being too frightened. Each of the walks are only £5 for an adult and £3 for a child, for many this is a much cheaper day out than a shopping trip… Peterborough Museum holds a wide variety of tours and walks so why not try something dfferent.
