CITY YOUTH SERVICES GET LOTTERY BOOST Good news from Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service which has been awarded more than £638,000 from the Youth Investment Fund. This is a £40 million programme jointly funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and the Big Lottery Fund, using money raised by National Lottery players. PCVS have been awarded £638,416 over the course of three years to create and expand open access youth delivery in the city, providing a wide range of activities across culture, media, arts and sport. It’s hoped it will make a huge difference to the lives of many young people in the city.

PIZZA 900 COMPETITION
Since January, local primary school children have been drawing their own pizza creations with toppings that represent the cathedral's 900th anniversary this year. Papa Luigi has been posting the children's artwork on Facebook where you can vote for your favourites. Finalists will get to make their pizzas at a judging event at the cathedral on Saturday July 14 and the winning pizza will be added to the Papa Luigi menu and sold at the Italian Festival this September. Profits from each slice sold will go to the 900 fund.
ITTER PARK SUMMER FETE From Roman pottery to fairground rides, Paston’s annual free Summer Fete will have something for you, your friends and your family. With entertainment throughout the day from Tu Danse (Peterborough Dance School), local talent, singer and guitarist Thomas Dunleavy and City of Peterborough Youth Ensemble, there won’t be a dull moment. As well as that fairground rides, stalls, games and food will be available. Hosted at Itter Park by All Saints’ Church (in association with The Friends of Itter Park), the event starts at 12 noon and finishes at 4pm on Saturday July 7.
A MOMENT IN TIME PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION If you fancy yourself as an amateur photographer, no matter what your age, there’s a great competition running to encourage you to capture some of the exciting moments during Peterborough Cathedral’s 900th year. This might be the effect of a fleeting moment of light or weather on the building, or the people and events that are part of the anniversary celebrations. Judges include experts from the fields of photography, visual arts, printing and media, as well as representatives of the cathedral itself. The public will also be invited to see an exhibition of the images and vote for their favourite to win a cash prize. The first weekend of celebrations is due to take place on Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 1 with the Ferry Meadows Cultural Festival. The main hub of activities will take place around Coney Meadow (behind the Ferry Meadows Visitor Centre) with a festival of music, culture and fun! On the outdoor stage there’ll be local music acts hosted by Josh Lovatt from Heart FM on the Saturday. RIDE FOR LIFE IS BACK!
It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since the shopping centre at Eye relaunched as PE1. To mark the occasion there’ll be special celebrations on Saturday July 28 with a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is encouraging cyclists to get back in the saddle for an epic 200-plus mile ride across the region. The charity’s Ride for Life returns on Friday July 20. Murder Tale Polstead Heads to Hampton In the Red Barn, a dark secret lies buried, waiting to be discovered… Eastern Angles Theatre Company brings us a new take on a classic story of murder which they’re staging at The Undercroft beneath Serpentine Green shopping centre this month. Polstead is a new retelling of the true tale of Maria Marten and the Red Barn Murder in 1820s Suffolk. Polstead is a quiet village stuck in its ageold traditions and ancient class system. Rich and poor, man and woman, everyone knows their place. Maria yearns for thrills and experimentation and throws herself into the arms of a wealthy landowner and thinks her dreams have all come true. Eastern Angles re-examines the life of Maria Marten and the events that led up to her murder. As part of the writing process, Beth Flintoff has interviewed women from Lighthouse Women’s Aid charity, based in Ipswich, who aim to support and empower women and children affected by domestic abuse or violence. The interviews and historical research will bring a new modern perspective on the notorious murder case. This dark local tale will be dramatically staged by Hal Chambers with an all-female cast at The Undercroft on July 18 – 21 as part of a regional tour. xperienced runners like ESP’s resident action man Darren Grigas will be joining the runners once again this year but ever year there is a whole batch of newbies pushing themselves across the finish line. Whether you’re a regular runner looking to get a personal best or only starting out and just hoping to complete it, the PGER marks a real achievement for every entrant. ESP photographer Chris Brudenell will be running the half marathon for the first time this year. Last year he took part in the fun run dressed as Batman and has proved he’s a
real super hero having shed 8st in weight to date and embarking on a get fit campaign running regularly. Entering the Perkins Great Eastern Run is often a goal for many runners and as part of his year of achievements for his 40th he’s hoping to add this to his list. Chris has already abseiled down Peterborough Cathedral, paddled in the Dragon Boat Race and done a tandem sky dive. All things he never thought he would do and so it’s no surprise he’s getting a big pat on the back and proving to be an inspiration to others. Chris said – “Training is going really well and I’m now up to 10 miles. They say that if you can manage 10 easily enough the support from the crowd on the day will carry you through the last few miles, but I’m hoping to do 13 before the race. “I just want to show up and make a good go of things and there’s no shame
in having a little walk! This time last year I hadn’t even started running – I never thought in a million years I could run 13 miles. If you can walk briskly then you can jog, and if you can jog you can run – it’s all about steady progression and I’ve proved that to myself.” If you need a little extra help there are free training sessions for all abilities at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track. The training sessions have been organised by Advance Performance and are held in conjunction with experienced runners and coaches from local running clubs, who’ll lead the runs. Each training session begins at 7pm with a warm up. You’re then divided according to level of fitness and aspirations before being taken for a training run. There’s free parking at the Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre car park and the athletics track has full changing and shower facilities. The training sessions take place every other Wednesday from July. The dates are:

Join the Anna’s Hope 900 Challenge If the half marathon is just too much at this stage why not start with the Anna’s Hope 5k Fun Run to get you started? In support of the Peterborough Celebrates 900 campaign the Stamford based charity has set a challenge to provide 900 weeks of specialist neuro-rehabilitation for children with a Brain Tumour To help Anna’s Hope achieve this goal the charity is challenging schools, businesses, families and friends to run and raise funds in the Anna’s Hope Fun 5k Fun Run or the half marathon in the Perkins Great Eastern Run 8

which takes place on Sunday October 14. All you need to do is run and raise at least £30, which will fund one week’s specialist neuro- rehabilitation support for one child with a brain tumour. Everyone who signs up to run and commits to raise at least £30 (one week’s funding) will receive an Anna’s Hope t-shirt to wear on the day. Of course, you can raise funds for more than one week to help Anna’s Hope reach the 900week target e.g. £90 will fund three weeks of support and £150 will fund 5 weeks of support. Saturday June 9 marked the 20th anniversary of the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival! Hundreds of people attended the event – which included 48 teams. Some took the race seriously – stretching and giving passionate motivational speeches, whilst others lounged in the sun drinking beer and gorging on sandwiches. The thing we all had in common was that we loved every minute of it. Gable Events once again did a fantastic job of putting the event together. I was a participant in the very first Dragon Boat Race and I can’t believe how much it’s evolved. Back in the day, unless you were racing there wasn’t much at all to keep you entertained. In recent years there’s been fairground rides, music and a general understanding that people are to bring barbecues, games and simply have a lot of fun. This year even saw a flypast which then went on to the Palace for the Queen's birthday.

ESP was the print media partner for the 2nd year running and our Motley Crew came 11th out of 48 – something we are extremely proud of. The champions were Barhale (The Rat Pack) closely followed by Ballast Phoenix Ltd (Phoenix Pirates). The Mixed Crew Champions were Fitzwilliam Hospital (Fitzwilliam Pacemakers) with Coloplast Ltd (Row Farah) in 2nd! Of course, if there was a prize for the best team name (which I’d love to see happen next year) then Row Farah would surely take the crown? Cirrhosis of the River, Cool Rowings and Do Oar Die would make close contenders. The event also raised well over £30,000 for the race charity, Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice so everyone’s a winner! This new wave of trader has been backed up by the council's own dedicated marketing efforts for the market and its latest initiative is a food and music festival on Saturday July 21. This is a free event where you can sample some of the market's sumptuous food offering from stalls including Siam Thai, ZeroZero Pizzas, Naz's Curries, Victoria's Sponge House and City Diner. Visitors can also tuck into a meal using market produce in a pop-up restaurant from MichelinGuide listed Prevost. Other new stalls will be showcasing Italian groceries, churros, chocolates, panzerotto, vegan street food and more. There's real ale on tap too and live music from local acoustic acts.

Italy Comeback? Just when you thought the Italian team was dead and buried after failing to qualify for the World Cup, look at what the football gods have assembled in this photo… In a bid to keep the Italian spirit in me alive during football’s most prestigious tournament, my colleagues coaxed me out of retirement to play two hard-fought games at the Powerleague. Typically Italian, our star striker was too busy doing his hair in front of the changing room mirror when this photo was about to be taken, so we shoved our mascot (little boy in the Coventry shirt) in the lineup instead. I hadn’t kicked a ball in 14 years prior to these games and it showed. I must have had 20 chances to score but only converted two. But the important thing is we won (yes, winning is important) both games and I didn’t need a paramedic. Although, I did spend the next week walking around like Charlie Chaplin.
FANCY 80 MILLION MICROBES OF BACTERIA? It’s International Kissing Day on Friday July 6 and playing tonsil tennis with your loved one spreads 80 million microbes of bacteria. I do love a stat. But the objective of this day is to appreciate and enjoy a kiss, so go ahead and swap some saliva because it (should) makes us feel good. The world record for the longest kiss is held by Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarathold from Thailand who kept at it for a massive 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds! This month also marks National Bikini Day (July 5) and I encourage all ladies to take part in this special celebration. Named after the Bikini Atoll, where the United States conducted atomic tests in the 1940s, the two piece bathing suit was debuted by French designer Louis Reard. Never has a piece of clothing worn by females made men, women and Jabba the Hutt (Princess Leia’s bikini) feel good at the same time. Monsieur Reard, pure genius.
The ‘Italian Seinfield’ is back He tours Australia, America and Canada but never forgets to pay homage to the Italian population in Peterborough. I’ve been working with excellent comedian Joe Avati to secure a venue to perform in front of his fans and we’ve managed to bag the Town Hall on Thursday September 20. Joe’s observational brand of comedy has earned him comparisons to Jerry Seinfeld, which is a massive accolade to say the least. He identifies with the current generations of Anglo-Italians by
referencing his life experiences growing up around his family and the characters and traits that are universal in Italian families. His 20/20 Vision anniversary tour has already sold out in venues across the other side of the world and I’m sure Peterborough can do him just as proud. If you haven’t tried the Riverside Restaurant at the Key Theatre we can certainly recommend it. It’s in a perfect summer setting overlooking the river and there’s currently a great deal offering 40% off main meals after 7pm and you can also enjoy ‘dinner and a show’ with pre-theatre dining and a set menu of two courses (£12.50) or three courses (£15). There’s nothing better on a Sunday than a good old fashioned roast and Harry’s Bar Café has just introduced a new menu. There’s the choice of beef or chicken accompanied by all your favourites – roast potatoes, homemade Yorkshire pudding, fresh veg of the day, roast parsnips and fabulous homemade gravy. Feast from the Middle East This month the fabulous ‘pop up’ dining concept at the city’s independent Lightbox Café on Bridge Street offers a real feast from the Middle East on Friday July 13. Artisan foodies Bread Meat Cheese will once again be taking over the kitchens to create a one night only menu offering something distinctly different for Peterborough. Expect three meze served with flatbreads, a classic chickpea hummus; feta haydari with honey and a beetroot tzatziki, followed by a warm king prawn salad with pink radish and red onion with za'atar & orange dressing. The spectacular main course is a spice marinated and slow cooked local lamb shoulder served with dried fruits, cous-cous, sekanjabin (mint syrup) & fresh salads. That’s not all! To round it all off there are then two mouth-watering desserts: first an individual blueberry, lime & ginger ‘cheesecake’ followed by a white chocolate, cardamom &

If music be the food of love… A true passion for excellent food and quality music fired up Peter Fierro’s desire to launch his own independent pizza restaurant in Peterborough.

ome 37 years after setting up city estate agent City & County this successful local businessman finally took the plunge to live out his dream, and as the Pizza Parlour and Music Café on Cowgate prepares to celebrate its second birthday it looks like it’s been a dream come true. “I just love it and I love to see other people enjoying the food and the music” says Peter. You can see the excitement and glint in Peter’s eye as he enthuses passionately about his latest labour of love. “I love to cook, I always have and I used to DJ in the 60s and just love music too. I used to go and see soul bands at venues in London where you could dine as well – there was nothing like that here. “This is a completely different offering and stands out from the crowd – and people like that.” It certainly appears that they do if the Trip Advisor ratings are anything to go by and the restaurant clearly holds its own in the city’s new dining out quarter. This independent will celebrate its 2nd birthday in September and Peter and his team have been honing their craft to get things just right. “I’m very particular about sauces. It’s the prime ingredient of all Italian cooking and it’s got to taste like it tastes at home – it’s all down to the sauce and I’m confident we have it right.” 18 www.espmag.co.uk

A love of retro music and quality tunes that are easy to listen to while you’re dining out is reflected in the playlist and the popular live acoustic sessions. “The Pizza Parlour is unique,” says Peter proudly. “Providing this food with this experience – you just won’t find it elsewhere. I’ve spent a lot on the sound system and it has to be as good as the food.” The restaurant’s wood fired pizza oven makes it unique and creates distinctly different, truly delicious, crispy pizza. The oven heats up to 350/400 0C and cooks from underneath forming an instant crust which tastes much better with delicious fresh
toppings which haven’t soaked into the dough. There are two particular favourites that have become huge successes. One is the Bee Sting pizza which originated from New York and has now become a best seller at the Pizza Parlour. It’s a delicious margherita pizza with hot Calabrian salami, chilli flakes and a drizzle of honey. Another hugely popular one is the Bada Bing 20” pizza which is a feast for three and great value – believe us we’ve tried it and it’s the business! Inside the venue is adorned with retro photos reflecting the musicians Peter loves from the 60s, 70s and 80s. There’s easy listening performers at their Lazy Sunday sessions from 3pm and popular acoustic acts every Tuesday – a gig that performers are now eager to snap up. Wednesday night entertainment rotates throughout the month with salsa nights on week one, followed by jazz, rockabilly and 80s. On Friday and Saturday night the Pizza Parlour and Music Café transforms into a wine bar after 10pm and now it’s summer the outdoor seating really comes into its own. he 41st Peterborough Beer Festival kicks off on the River Embankment on Tuesday August 21 - running until Mikey Clarke Saturday August 25. I’ve attended the popular five-day event every year since I was 18. Without revealing my age, let’s just say it’s been a long time. The Beer Fest (which aims to showcase the best real ales from around the UK) is always the highlight of my year. You can’t beat meeting up with friends, trying out ‘a few’ of the 400 draught real ales on offer, whilst listening to great live music at each session. I’d mention the sunshine but with our British summers, who knows – although thanks to the giant marquees, we’re all good whatever the weather. I find that most people share my passion for the Peterborough Beer Festival, and those that don’t simply have misconceptions about it. In the past, some people have said to me, “Why would I go when I don’t like beer?”
Because there’s so much more on offer! There’s a huge range of ciders, perries, wine, soft drinks and a gin bar a range of around 50 different and unique gins to sample! People will sometimes say, “I like to spend the weekend with the family.” Again, not a problem – bring them along! Lunchtime or early evening is the ideal time to take the family, as there’s always an easygoing, friendly atmosphere. The Escape Bar will be selling a range of soft drinks, crisps, ice cream, sweets and children’s drinks from 50p. You can even bring your dog (on a lead),

Peterborough Cathedral is set to be out of this world all summer as the excitement builds for Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft landing here alongside the ultimate Space Descent VR experience with August. The Cathedral, in its 900th year, will be hosting the Soyuz TMA-19M spacecraft as it tours the UK following the 2015-2016 Principia mission. It is likely the spacesuit and parachute used during the mission will also be on display… but we are very eager to try out that VR. Green Meadows Festival is now in its seventh year and has its biggest ever line up for the annual three day event at Elton Hall near Peterborough.

What do you get when you mix David Walliams, Toploader and Nat King Cole? Another amazing Oundle International Festival! The Festival returns for its 34th year and has everything from pop to jazz, Nat King Cole tunes to world folk music as well as drama and history tours! Jazz star Atila, a regular performer at Ronnie Scott's, will entertain on Saturday July 7 with his brilliant celebration of the life and songs of Nat King Cole followed by Kabantu on Monday July 9 with their highly infectious blend of world & folk music. Jazz fans are then in for a treat on Friday July 13 when the David Gordon Trio play music from their Alexander Scriabin's Ragtime Band project.
Families are also in for a treat on Friday July 13 with a performance of David Walliams’ popular book The Midnight Gang by Heartbreak Productions. This is open air theatre at its best – take along a rug or chair and enjoy this hilarious play in Barnwell Country Park. There will also be the Oundle On Show weekend taking place on Saturday July 7 including Barnwell Country Park's Music in the Park when five local brass bands perform throughout the afternoon, a Classic Bicycle Ride, which will include a ride through the town in the late afternoon, and on the Sunday, Open Oundle will provide a chance to look around some of the town's 'hidden' buildings and join historical tours. That’s all followed by a concert by the Rusty Players of Oundle and another hugely enjoyable Big Afternoon Tea. OUTDOOR THEATRE ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND In their 19th year of touring, Chapterhouse Theatre Company are preparing to take you down the rabbit hole during their presentation of a family classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. TIME FOR YOUTH JAM 18!
Local band Caustic Lights and a choir of 900 voices are set to headline at Youth Jam 18 and we can’t wait. We’re really excited about YMCA Trinity Group’s Youth Jam 18 event on Saturday July 21 in Cathedral Square and ESP Magazine will be heading down on the day. It’s all in aid of projects to provide new, dedicated youth spaces in Peterborough and will showcase young people aged 5 - 25 from across the city as they dance, sing and play in a celebration of talent that’s set to kick start the summer holidays.
The day will begin at 10am with a parade led by the Highland Pipe Band followed by dozens of acts performing throughout the day on three stages around Cathedral Square and will end with 900 voices joining to sing Boy George’s version of the classic hit song, YMCA. In addition to the on-stage performances there’ll be immersive theatre from Peterborough Regional College’s league of actors and a huge range of food stalls, games, activities and demonstrations including careers advice, further education options, community organisations, volunteering opportunities and arts & crafts. Three talented young people, Jessie (16), Akshath (12) and Jacob (11) from Wildcats Theatre School have been selected to host the event. The annual Summer Reading Challenge is designed for children aged 4 -11 and by joining in they can collect stickers, enjoy fun giveaways and receive a certificate by reading six library books over the summer holiday. When they sign up they’ll get a free collector folder to keep their special stickers in – collect all
six stickers and special giveaways as they read. It’s fun and, best of all, it’s totally free. The challenge is suitable for ages 4 -11, but younger siblings can take part in their minichallenge and collect stickers for books shared at home. The Summer Reading Challenge website is now live all year round with information about the great books to read, games and more!
GREEN FESTIVAL MOVES TO NENE PARK
Get ready for some green themed fun this August as Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) celebrates its 25th year with a big celebration at Nene Park. The Green Festival – one of the longest running and biggest environmental events in the whole of the UK – is moving out of the city
centre this time and relocating to the beautiful parkland setting. The big launch event is taking place on Saturday August 11 from 10am - 4pm, plus there’ll be plenty of special fringe events with partners running through until August 19, providing lots of opportunities for everyone to get involved. The Green Festival offers plenty of fun for all the family and encourages visitors to discover how to live more sustainably. MEDIEVAL VILLAGE COMES TO QUEENSGATE
Let’s flashback 900 years to Medeshamstede and the birth of Peterborough for one week only in Queensgate Shopping Centre this summer. From Monday July 30 until Sunday August 5, you’ll be invited to a fully immersive, interactive experience replicating life in Peterborough 900 years ago. Have a go at pulling the sword from the stone to be named king or queen of the city, or gaze at the incredible working water mill… all situated inside the shopping centre.
Climb up the towering turrets, stroll across the drawbridge and into the courtyard where villagers, knights and members of the church will be living their daily lives in the medieval Central Square. With various activities to take part in for you and the youngsters including bread making, Merlin’s spell school, dressing up and so much more, there won’t be a dull moment in this heritage-embracing event. Watch as the area comes to life with traditional harps and folk music alongside incredible sword skills shown in battle by the Knights of the Round Table. Vivacity’s sports holiday club will have the kids celebrating the summer with a jam packed programme boasting a range of activities from NERF wars to roller discos. Taking place across four Vivacity sites including Hampton Leisure Centre, Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre, Jack Hunt Pool and Gym and Werrington Leisure Centre. Brand new this year Vivacity’s Book Bus will be visiting the four sports holiday club sites, giving children a chance to read a variety of books and take part in themed activities. Fairy RECORD BREAKERS There was fairy dust and glitter aplenty as hundreds of fairies gathered outside Peterborough Cathedral – including a few from ESP!

We joined in the fun to help Stamford based charity Anna’s Hope make it into the record books for the most people dressed as fairies in one place. It’s subject to official verification but on the day it’s believed 878 people dressed in their tutus, wings and wands and successfully beat the last Guinness World Record. It was all part of the Peterborough Celebrates events to mark 900 years of Peterborough Cathedral. Many of us already use the bags for life and recycle where we can, but now more and more people want to take it one step further and have ‘plastic free living’. I wanted to give it a try, but one of the issues was staring right at me as I looked at my dressing table. Plastic shampoo and fake tan bottles, plastic wrapping around unopened makeup products, need I go on? So to be truly plastic free, I needed to do some serious Health and Beauty research. For those of you interested in doing the same, here are some top tips…
Soaps and shampoos Lush is leading the way with zero-waste, 'naked' style packaging – and have solved my shampoo qualms. Their shampoo bars say they leave you with ‘buoyant and beautiful hair’. At £6.50 a pop in the Queensgate store they aren’t too bad a price either.
Your makeup must haves Etsy has some great make up products which are all plastic free – you can find everything from eye liner to bronzer here. My fav is UrbaPothecary lips and cheek blush tint stick, which is a zero-waste option with plastic-free packaging and something to use all over your face from your cheek bones to your lids. Bamboo toothbrush Yes, you read it right, the new trend is to ditch plastic and go bamboo when brushing your gnashers. Available at Holland and Barrett, the Humble Brush is the world's most sold eco-friendly toothbrush; and even better, for every Humble Brush sold, a child in need receives a toothbrush or alternative oral care and education in areas around the world where the need is greatest. Plus, they promise it lasts just as long as an ordinary plastic toothbrush!
Ditch the disposal razor Check these out at The English Shaving Company. When it comes to shaving, swapping from disposables to a double-edged razor is a
basic change that goes a long way in reducing plastic waste. Men and women alike shave regularly; if everyone were to make a small change, the difference could be huge.

Well Being TIME TO ‘GROW’ INTO A NEW DIET?
‘Plant-based’ has become a buzz word in the last couple of years as we’ve seen an explosion in more conscious eating as well as some pushing towards a more vegan diet.
W
e’ve become so conditioned to believe that meat and dairy products are the only way to get our protein, but thankfully that old song has been sung and we can see that plants offer us plenty of protein when we eat a wide variety.
Research has shown that a high plant food diet rich in colourful fruits, veggies, whole grains, seeds and nuts has many health benefits including high fibre... I am not about to suggest you all turn vegan, but I do want to point out that only a few decades ago we ate much less meat. I remember a stew would contain a few pieces of meat and the rest would’ve been potatoes and plenty of veggies. Now, that same stew is bursting with meat and less veggies. Meat was far more expensive only a few decades ago, now it is cheap but that comes

at a cost to not only the animals, but the environment and our own health. We’re simply eating too much of it today! Our digestive tract is very long compared to that of a natural carnivore for good reason – they need to pass that meat through before it rots in the gut. Also, they have very high hydrochloric acid to break down the flesh in the stomach, we on the other hand have much smaller amounts. With this in mind, meat may be partially digested so the protein is not broken into the amino acids which are the building blocks of protein that the body needs for repair etc. This partially digested meat can reach further down into the colon rotting and producing toxic byproducts that are linked to inflammatory bowel diseases, bowel cancers and more. ‘Plant based’ is not a passing trend, it is here to stay. Research has shown that a high plant food diet rich in colourful fruits, veggies, whole grains, seeds and nuts has many health benefits including high fibre, is rich in phytonutrients, rich in vitamins/minerals (especially magnesium) and much more. Eating a high plant based diet and less animal products particularly meats are said to convey many health benefits such as:
Body Lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes type 2, reduced risk of certain cancers particularly bowel as well as inflammatory bowel disease, osteoporosis and more. Mind Plant foods with their rich phytonutrient content as well as mineral/vitamin content deliver key nutrients to support brain health including essential fatty acids, B vitamins and more. With the increase of cognitive decline, it’s important that we ensure a wide variety of colours in our diet. The fibre also feeds our microbes which have been linked to healthy brain function as well as improved mood and concentration. Eating a little less meat and animal protein in general and increasing plant foods will convey so many health benefits. Do not however let the plant based promotion fool you into thinking if it comes from plants it must be healthy. For instance, including too many plant fats in your diet is not health promoting. Excess coconut and other oils, nuts and seeds can still trigger weight gain and can lead to health issues. I’ve seen vegans and raw foodies consume an excess of plant oils, fats and nuts – so balance is needed. There are numerous cook books out there as well as lots of quick go-to-plant foods in supermarkets, café’s and restaurants. A
longside the increasing temperatures and the Edinburgh Fringe brochure landing on my doorstep, June happened to be a particularly good month for me, especially as I had the pleasure of seeing Bill Bailey’s new show Larks in Transit. Performing to Peterborough (and the surrounding area) Bill was back on form with a variety of fantastic songs, including a Theresa May inspired rave track, a rendition of the American national anthem in a minor key, and a musical journey through what it would sound like if Nicki Minaj sampled puffins in her hit songs... Many jokes were naturally had at the expense of the venue, which was referred to as a ‘shed of whimsy’, however the set up at the East of England Arena was ideal for the various musical interludes, especially when Bill activated his emergency ‘instant jazz club’ button after his Brexit routine. Me and my friend Jane had a fantastic time and I’d definitely recommend seeing the show or purchasing Larks in Transit on DVD if it comes out at the end of this year.

In response to selling out his first show, Chris Ramsey will be performing another date of his ‘Just Happy to Get Out of the House’ tour at the Key Theatre on Sunday September 9. years of the NHS As we celebrate 70 years of the NHS this month who better to mark the event locally than street photographer and Peterborough paramedic Chris Porsz.
W
e’ve long championed Chris’s work at ESP and having spent over 40 years photographing the changing face of the NHS at the hospital where he works he’s gathered a huge slice of social history. “There have been huge changes in the NHS during the decades and it’s fascinating to look back at the pictures now and see how different it used to be,” said Chris. “It’s quite relentless for doctors and nurses now, with many working 12-hour shifts, but in the past there was more time to socialise.” Chris began working as a porter in 1974 at Peterborough District Hospital which was eventually demolished in 2010 and re-built at Bretton Gate as Peterborough City Hospital. It’s the summer of love (island) again… Chloe Wilkinson reports on the reality show that’s riding the tide of success.

et set Islanders as we’re heading for another summer of love, heartbreak and big drama with Caroline Flack returning to lead the way for a fourth year... Love Island managed to brainwash the nation last year with Chris & Kem becoming the UK’s favourite ‘bromance’, and Muggy Mike managing to ruffle everyone’s feathers with his sneaky behaviour… but who’s going to be ‘Mr Steal Your Girl’ this year? With a batch of new singletons the show has already created a lot of anticipation for who’ll win, who’ll come and who’ll go, and Caroline Flack is there to watch all the action unfold. “For me, all three series have been special,” said Caroline. “The momentum has picked up as it’s gone along, which is always nice to see in a series. I don’t think any series has been more special than another.” Over the duration of the programme, it has been heavily criticised for lack of diversity and its staged nature, more so than other reality programmes of a similar style, although the public don’t seem to mind as Love Island has become ITV2’s most viewed show ever whilst also managing to dominate headlines, which we can expect for the duration in the longest Love Island series ever. “Last year, we reached a bigger audience across different ages. I think people started realising the show is a lot more than what it might seem on the surface. People have realised it’s so much more than just being another reality show. It’s about real relationships and how they develop and people always see a bit of themselves in everyone,” said Caroline. “I think they might think it’s soulless, but in fact that’s the opposite of what it is. I think if you watch, it reminds you of the old fashioned way of dating. These days, when everyone is on Tinder and Instagram, and on their mobile phones, it actually is the style of having a conversation and getting to know one another. It’s old school dating.” Joining the villa this year was 27 year old Dr Alex George and 29 year old air hostess Laura Anderson leaving quite an age gap between other fresh contestant 20 year old Wes Nelson, alongside Dani Dyer who is the daughter of cockney actor Danny Dyer. Caroline had a good approach when asked what attributes she would be looking for if she was responsible for casting the show - “[I’d make it] as diverse as possible with lots of different character types. I quite like it when we put people in who are a bit older. We have a few in this year who are maybe a bit more experienced. I always like the girls and guys in there that I relate to; the ones who have made a few mistakes. We all make mistakes and it’s good to know other people do as well.” Last year’s Love Island jaw-dropping bombshell saw the male and female islanders move into separate villas and face the ultimate temptation… new single people. ITV called it the ‘ultimate test of loyalty and relationships for existing couples and a chance for the ones who haven’t found love to find it’. Who better to announce the twists in the show than Caroline? Will they become even more devious this year? How will Islanders cope? “I get very excited; it’s always a really exciting feeling. It’s very late at night when we do it, often when they’re least expecting it. It’s a one take as well. For me I have to be mentally very prepared. You can’t deliver news twice; you have to do it first time. From a professional point of view I’m very prepared and from a viewer point of view I get excited and star struck.” We expected nothing less of the show this year, with more tears, tantrums and true love now unfolding on our screens. Love Island airs at 9pm every night on ITV2 with spin-off studio show Love Island: Aftersun following at 10pm where Caroline is joined by celebrity guests and dumped islanders ensuring we are first to be in on all the gossip and goings on.

Summer means that we can see our favourite bands perform in the open air and not just at festivals. More and more pubs are putting on live music at the weekends, and I was attracted to The Five Horseshoes at Barholm recently to see the brilliant Children of the Revolution. They started at about 3pm and struck up with Gimme Some Lovin’ segued straight into All Day And All Of The Night and that set the tone for the afternoon. The thing about COTR is they’re versatile and love to try their own version of classic songs from different genres of music. They covered The Hives, Stevie Wonder, Billy Ocean and Eddie and the Hotrods hits and pleasingly for me, found time to do two Stones classics, Gimme Shelter and Sympathy for the Devil. I always enjoy Children of the Revolution wherever I see them.
It was a great Sunday afternoon in beautiful weather and lovely surroundings. The Five Horseshoes has a large beer garden with a bar and food tent and a play area with bouncy castle for the kids. I so enjoyed it, that I decided I would go back the following week to see The Nuggets. They were as always exciting and hugely entertaining. For me, it was a great way to spend Father’s Day – band, beer and burger! They have more Sunday afternoon gigs planned at Barholm. Sunday July 15 sees The One Eyed Cats, whilst Children of the Revolution are back by popular demand on Sunday August 26. Sandwiched in between there is the Inns’ Annual Beer and Cider Festival on the weekend of August 17 to 19. Saturday features Paul Lake in the afternoon and The Nuggets in the evening. Sunday the festival ends with Reggae masters Zeb Rootz. 48 www.espmag.co.uk
Local promoter Terry Narraine tells me he’s organised a Charity Band Day at The Crown Inn, Lincoln Road, New England on Sunday July 22. It’s scheduled to start at 3pm and run through until 11pm.
Help For Heroes Music Day @ The Elm Tree Tavern I love this time of year and the fact we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to live music every weekend. The start of this month sees a day of music to raise money for Help For Heroes. The Family Fun Day and Music Fest is being held at The Elm Tree Tavern in Dogsthorpe on Saturday July 7. There’s music from 1pm till late at the pub and on the King’s School playing field. There’s a great day of live tunes lined up raising money for this worthy cause including: Arc Nation, Caustic Lights, Thunderhead, Outlaw Eagles, True British Mayhem and young singer Thomas Dunleavy. As part of the fun day there will also be a fire engine, bouncy castle, dog show, cheerleaders, stalls and food, rides, raffle and tombola, so plenty to keep the whole family happy.
Terry explained – “We are raising money for the End Youth Homelessness Charity. We held a similar event for this charity last year and managed to raise £500 in one afternoon to help this cause. However, there are currently 17,000 young people without a roof over their head in the UK and we feel we need to do more to combat this growing social problem. In today’s Britain, no young person should have to live rough.” So to attract people to attend The Crown will have a BBQ, a selection of real ales, raffle and auction. But the most important attraction will be the music and Terry told me – “I have secured the services of five bands who are giving up their time and play free of charge to help raise funds on the day.“ And what a good bill it is! The line up includes True 90's (90's tribute band), The Expletives (70's, 80's punk & new wave tribute band), Another Girl Another Planet (punk, pop, rock, new wave, ska, 2 tone and northern soul covers), Glam Slam Glitz (70's glam rock tribute band) and Rocket ’57 (late 50's and 60's rock 'n' roll and chart hits). I would’ve thought that there’s something in that line up to attract most people down to The Crown on Lincoln Road and to help Terry and the bands to earn very important funds for a very deserving charity.
Water Newton Music Festival
The ever popular Water Newton Music Festival made a very successful return to the local scene last year and the organisers have announced a great line up showcasing a great selection of popular local bands. The open air one day event to be held on Bank Holiday Sunday August 26 starting at 12 noon is held on the beautifully located village green by the River Nene. There’s continuous music through to 7.30pm, featuring the return of some established favourites who are joined by some new names to Water Newton. The acts include - The Gangsters, Latino Sound, Pennyless, Nick Corney & The Buzz Rats and The Houndogs. Throughout the day there’ll be delicious ‘street food’, wood fired pizzas, gourmet burgers and a wine and beer tent serving real ales supplied by Castor Ales. There’s always a laid back friendly atmosphere at this charity gig which has all profits going to The Friends of St Remigius to help maintain and improve the ancient church in Water Newton. The village is on the banks of the River Nene and is just 6 miles outside Peterborough, accessible from the A1. Tickets are selling fast on www.waternewtonvillage.co.uk.

A Story To Tell Locally based pop rock group A Story To Tell, are playing a very special hometown show at The Met Lounge on Friday August 10. The show’s in memory of Julie Davis who sadly passed away recently. Julie was a huge supporter of the band, following them all over the country. Julie was also a big supporter of the local music scene in general and a regular at The Met Lounge where she would watch and support all the Peterborough bands.
Open Mic is Buzzing @ The Beehive It’s good to see the new monthly open mic night return to The Beehive near Asda. Hosted by Bon Rogers-White, the event is now on the first Friday of the month. Head down and join in the fun! You can sign up to be a part of it from 7.30pm and the music is from 8pm. As an added incentive there’s a free drink for anyone who plays! If you’d like to book your slot in advance, give them a call or visit their facebook page.
A Story To Tell will be donating profits from the night to the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice that looked after Julie. The band’s been very busy in the studio recently, recording a new single and playing shows, most recently in London. The band members are Jack Wycherley (vocals), Sam Amos and Mark Smith (guitars) with Dave Leighton (bass) and Joe Pickett (drums). They’re not short of travel experience either, because their latest single Nebbiolo Place was written by guitarist Mark when he and his brother-in-law, Jack were visiting their family in Australia during a break from touring. Mark explained – “Nebbiolo Place is an area of Western Australia famous for its wine making and definitely for me a special place in the country.” So The Met Lounge gig gives the band’s very loyal fan base an opportunity to see them perform locally so tickets are bound to be in demand for the show. Mark told ESP – “Our fans can expect our longest set to date. It will be packed full of old favourites, new material and a few surprises. On the night we will also have brand new merchandise that will be exclusive to those at the show. The Ploughman Beer Festival Summer means beer festivals and The Ploughman in Werrington never disappoints. Once again they’ve lined up a great selection of brews and tunes at the pub for its Beer Festival running from Tuesday July 3 (CAMRA preview day) through to Sunday July 8. Treat your tastebuds with a range of 50+ real ales and ciders along with 47 speciality gins. Treat your eardrums to great music from some top local bands. Friday July 6 kicks off with the ever popular Children of the Revolution followed by afternoon tunes from Bobafett on Saturday July 7 followed by The Nuggets in the evening. Sunday lunchtime it’s The Lava Lamp Lighters with Groove Cartell taking the stage from 3pm onwards. Feast on good old German Jeff’s barbecue when you get the munchies!
Memorial Gig for Mark
Nearly 12 months ago we reported the sad news that Mark Perks the lead singer of the very popular local band The Rocket Dogs had died suddenly of an undetected heart condition. Now his widow, Karen, and former band mates have organised The Last Bite to celebrate Mark’s life with all proceeds going to The British Heart Foundation. It takes place at Peterborough Sports and Social Club on Lincoln Road New England on Friday August 10 from 7.30pm til midnight. Karen said – “The Last Bite is a collaboration of local bands who’ll be playing The Rocket Dogs’ set list, with original members of the band, and all with key singers stepping in for Mark and filling his shoes for the night.” The event is sponsored by ABN (Associated British Nutrition) who were Mark’s employer. Karen told ESP – “All of the performers are giving their time for free for this event, and so we would like the place to be busy for the first set (why be late and miss it?) so make sure your there by 9pm.” This is a very good point because a lot of Peterborough musicians remember their colleagues by turning up and jamming at gigs like this. And if you are late, you don’t know who you’ll miss performing. The evening is bound to be emotional at times but will also be full of fun and energy that Mark would totally approve of. He was an absolute entertainer and I’m sure that will be reflected on the night.
