Peterborough Pride is back in 2019 and this month you have your chance to shape this summer’s event. Building on the success and positive feedback from last year’s event, Peterborough Pride 2019 will run from Friday June 28 until Friday July 5 and promises to be even bigger and better, with a week-long programme of performances, parties, gatherings and acts of solidarity all celebrating the city’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. ESP is proud to be a partner for the event and will be supporting it again for the second year running. Lead organiser, Simon Green, said: “Peterborough Pride is for everyone regardless of sexuality or gender identity. So, to help build on last year’s phenomenal success, we are pleased to announce a number of exciting opportunities for people to get involved in Peterborough Pride 2019. “We’d love to hear from anyone who would like to be a part in making this amazing event happen, especially those with skills and experience in ‘making things happen’; social media; PR; business engagement and fundraising. “We are also holding a special information session for individuals, businesses and organisations who want to host or lead an event that will feature in the Pride

DEMENTIA RESOURCE CENTRE’S OPEN DAY Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Resource Centre in Peterborough will open its doors for people unable to access information during the week. On Saturday January 12 staff will be on hand from 10am – 3pm, to give free advice to anyone with questions about dementia. The team are particularly keen to hear from those who are unable to access services during the week. Kevin Bowyer, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager in Peterborough, said: “We really hope that people can come along to our information day to find out about the services we provide for people affected by dementia. “We recognise that people with a diagnosis of dementia and especially people with young-onset dementia might still be working during the week. This event is a chance for people who cannot visit us during normal working hours to access and seek information on services available to them.” The Dementia Resource Centre, 5 York Road, Peterborough, PE1 3BP, is a one-stop shop for advice, information and support. The charity’s also looking for volunteers locally. From fundraising and administration to providing information and support in the community, there are a variety of opportunities available. WIZCON IS COMING! Here’s a magical one to look forward to - a new Harry Potter Fan Convention is coming to The Cresset this spring. WizCon is being held on Sunday March 24 from 12pm until 7pm, and will bring us a day full of witchcraft and wizardry. It’ll feature everything from Meet and Greets with some of the actors in the films to Q&A panels, a Cosplay competition, merchandise and more. Actor Josh Herdman, who played Gregory Goyle in the Harry Potter series of films, was the first confirmed special guest for WizCon, and more are being signed up every week. Simon Mayhew, event manager said: “We are delighted to be welcoming Josh Herdman to our first ever WizCon event, and we are looking forward to opening the doors to the devoted Harry Potter fans. If you’re a book lover don’t miss University Centre Peterborough’s fabulous Literary Festival over the next few weeks which will see top poets and crime novelist Sophie Hannah appearing as part of the programme. On Wednesday January 30 there’s an evening with a trio of poets (Esther Morgan, Michael Mackmin and Matthew Howard) for the first event of the UCP Literary Festival 2019. Then on Wednesday February 13 there’s an evening with crime novelist Sophie Hannah. Sophie is an internationally bestselling writer of psychological crime fiction, published in forty-nine languages and fifty-one territories. Both these events are free of charge for both UCP students and members of the public to attend and will take place from 7pm to 8pm in the Lecture Theatre at University Centre Peterborough. Eastern Angles return to Peterborough’s Key Theatre Studio with a spoof on the well-known panto genre. The Fenland Screamers & Other Boggy Tales, from the makers of Stoat Hall and The Mystery of St. Finnigan’s Elbow, is a New Year’s Eve party with a difference... It is the 30th December, 1930. Young amateur sleuth siblings Sloppy & Sixpence arrive at a remote house in the middle of Clinker Fen, invited by a distant relative to celebrate the New Year. Tempted by the idea of a grand weekend party, they ﬁnd the place deserted apart from the creepy butler, Tangent. He’s expecting them and despite their misgivings, they decide to stay. Other guests arrive, all strangers to one another, and as the fog descends, cutting them off from the outside world, they pass the time by telling stories. It becomes apparent that they all have a guilty secret, and are unnerved when Tangent tells them the local legend of the Fenland Screamers, avenging spirits who emerge from the bogs to drag the guilty back down into the mire. When one of the guests mysteriously disappears, they all begin to fear for their lives. Can Sloppy & Sixpence solve the mystery before the Screamers come again and take them all, one by one? Heritage Walks and Ghosts Galore

It’s one mad party but we love it! You can’t beat the annual (slightly bonkers) Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey for brightening up a January weekend. Get those Christmas hat and scarf sets out, wrap up and head to town. The streets will be packed, the pubs will be heaving and despite the chill Whittlesey will be in party mood. The traditional Straw Bear Festival may have its roots in times past but modern day crowds just love the chance to blow away the festive cobwebs and it’s always a busy one. Follow the ‘bear’ as it processes around the town centre from 10.30am – 3.30pm enjoying a tipple on the way. There’ll be the most bizarre looking dance groups entertaining you throughout the day, story telling sessions, poetry, food stalls and music. If you’ve never been before we can tell you there’s a great atmosphere and expect the unexpected! A concert kicks things off on Friday January 18 at the Ivy Leaf Club with tickets £10 and music from Jack Rutter, Ursula Holden Gill and Keith Donnelly. The big event is on Saturday January 19 throughout the town ending with a barn dance at the Sir Harry Smith Community College (tickets £12) with music from the Banter ceilidh band. Finally round things off on the Sunday at 12 noon at the college for the bear burning. Stargazing Evening @ Flag Fen If you’ve been inspired by smiley Professor Brian Cox or the exhibition of astronaut Tim Peake’s spacecraft in the city – how do you fancy an evening exploring the stars at one of Peterborough’s historic sites? Head down and join the star gazing event at Flag Fen, the Bronze Age site in Fengate, on Friday January 18 from 5.30pm - 9pm. You can watch the night sky through their telescope, enjoy planetarium shows and talks from astronomers. Time to Vote on Cathedral Images There’s a great exhibition of some wonderful photos in Peterborough Cathedral and it’s up to you to vote for a winner. It’s been a fantastic 12 months at the cathedral with more photos than ever taken during its 900th anniversary year. Now pictures from a special competition are on display in the Cathedral Visitor Centre including pictures of the Museum of the Moon and Tim Peake’s Spacecraft exhibitions and many more, all captured by amateur photographers. eterborough Cathedral has enjoyed a special year in the spotlight celebrating its 900th anniversary and now 2019 gets off to a great start with another big event – the annual Katharine of Aragon Festival. If you’ve watched any of the TV shows about the Tudors, or just like a bit of history, this is a great opportunity to ﬁnd out more and enjoy some unique activities. The Tudor-themed festival organised by Peterborough Cathedral and Vivacity takes place from January 25 – 27 and always proves another popular draw for the city’s iconic landmark where Katharine is laid to rest. The festival marks the date in January 1536 when King Henry VIII’s ﬁrst wife was buried at Peterborough Abbey having died in exile at Kimbolton Castle. Both former champions have the utmost respect for one another and are in regular contact. I was in the presence of two ordinary people who have done, and continue to do, extraordinary things. Most of all, both share a passion for grass roots boxing and what the sport can do for helping to rejuvenate the lives of troubled young people. And let me tell you now, if I didn’t stumble across a potential champion from the Finchley club that night then I’ll eat a packet of raw spaghetti. Those young boxers were something else and with many inspired by Sean and their club legend Anthony Joshua, you can see where they get their motivation from. Watch this space...

Still Packing a Punch!

As part of our continued celebration of more than 20 years of this excellent magazine I thought it would be rude not to mention the annual Face of ESP competition. It was a tough job but each year my editor insisted I should be photographed with the winner and here’s a couple of ones I think I look half decent in. Becca Evans (our first Face of ESP) and Susan Saunders made me look better than any photoshop wizard could, so thank you ladies. At its height there was no bigger competition for ladies to enter. The prize of being on the front cover for one special issue and representing the magazine for an entire year with all the benefits that came with it was a hard to resist scenario. Sponsors made the coveted title even more appealing with dozens of experiences and freebies thrown in, which meant the Face of ESP had the social diary of a modern-day celebrity. All of our winners took positive experiences from holding the crown for a year and their personalities, confidence and self-esteem flourished as a result. The grand finale event was always a glamorous affair where the ladies would be in their finest frocks and the men in their sharpest dinner suits. The finals night was the talk of the town for weeks and as a head judge it was always one of the most challenging jobs to help pick the lucky winner. I was honoured to join Gary De’Roux on a visit to a Finchley Amateur Boxing Club show in Tottenham and meet the man Gary beat to win the British featherweight title from in 1991. Proud Inﬂuencer It's always nice to be recognised for my achievements by fellow professionals and I ended 2018 by winning team accolades in the Athene Communications Peterborough Regional PR & Media Awards. I was proud to have led the Peterborough Celebrates 900 campaign, proud in advising and supporting the Anna's Hope world record for the largest gathering of fairies and proud to have helped steer the city council's internal communications campaign in their move to Fletton Quays. None of these successes would have been achieved without excellent teamwork and I thank my colleagues for being the best. Most of all I was proud to see this magazine's editor win Communicator of the Year (welcome to the fold Sharon) for being at the helm of ESP since its inception more than 20 years ago. Like Martin Scorsese, when he ﬁnally won the Academy Award for Best Director a few years ago, it was a long time coming and fully deserved. Well done Sharon!

Much has been written already about the passing of Peter Boizot. He was a true ambassador for Peterborough and invested lorry loads of money into our city in a bid to make it a better place for all of us. Peter was Posh chairman for a spell when I was at the football club and I have vivid memories of working with him. He had class, sincerity and enjoyed the finer things in life – Peter was all about quality. He had an air of royalty about him and it somehow felt right he being at the helm of his city's football club. It was his quirkiness that tickled me the most. Nothing was ever rushed or urgent, as I discovered on many occasion, particularly when I was on deadline to write the matchday programme. I needed to get Peter's column done on a Monday and most of that day would be spent on a wild goose chase trying to track him down across the city. He'd almost always end up at the Great Northern Hotel or in his restaurant, Gaston. When I'd show up at Gaston he'd spend an hour taking me on a tour of the kitchens and asking me to sample the evening menu dishes. And on another occasion he wanted my opinion on what style cutlery and dining chairs he should ship over from Italy. I'd like to think I had an influence on the red and blue chairs he finally settled with! So, on most occasions his column would have to wait or I'd end up writing it and weaving cutlery and chairs into the story, which was a challenge that most certainly honed my creative writing skills. To say Peter was unique is an understatement. He was one in a million and my life at the time was certainly enriched by knowing him. Rest in peace Peter.

It’s your New Year resolution but please don’t bother, you’ll fail like the rest of us. Temptation is everywhere and here’s a reminder: Big Mac Meal, Bargain Bucket Meal, Greggs (lots of them), Easter eggs (yes, they’ll be in the shops tomorrow), tea dunking, almond croissants (my guilty pleasure, please bury me with one), cakes (it’s always someone’s birthday in depressing January), wine (Jesus drank it, so it’s a sin not to).

We'll be Playing Again at Samm's! ESP were at the opening night of SAMM'S and the only photos that survived are a bit too wild for my column... So, here's a sensible one of me on the morning of its ofﬁcial opening, sipping a nonalcoholic cocktail made by the lovely (and very pink) Shannon. A packed opening night attracted a diverse crowd and was topped off by excellent local band Velocity whose rocking tunes even got owner Matt and his crew busting some moves behind the bar! The former Costa Coffee building has been transformed into what we were used to seeing at Puzzles? bar. I'm loving the bespoke ceiling lights by the way. This popular independent haunt on Bridge Street continues to serve up some great drinks and live music but everything in SAMM'S is just a little better. There's more lager draught choice, an improved cocktail menu, a bigger selection of beers in the fridge and barista-style coffees. urun Ahmed was our first starlet a few years back, Joseph Valente won it in 2015 and Khadija Kalifa from Bourne made it to the final five ‘interviews’ stage after impressing all the way through the process. It’s been fascinating watching how the candidates’ personalities evolve week after week and how each of them learn about themselves in and out of business. Khadija had a bit of a rocky start as she went about establishing her direct approach to tasks and to some of the other candidates, but you could clearly see a positive change in her after the first three or four episodes.

“

I’ve met Khadija on a few occasions and have been struck by how mature and level-headed she is for a 29 year-old. The boss of eco-friendly cleaning ﬁrm Opal & Pearl has already gone places and will certainly be scaling the dizzy heights of business for as long as she wants to. We had a quick catch-up after she left the process and we’ll be chatting more next month about what’s in store for her in 2019 – and the recipe for the cinnamon and mince pie ﬂavoured chocolate she invented in week 10 of the show! Another season of The Apprentice has come and gone and once again Peterborough can be proud of its representation on the show.

PEP TALK... Let’s start with the ‘Queen of Clean’ portrait painting you were presented with in the You’re Fired! show... “It was certainly a nice surprise and I’ve put it up in my office. A lot of thought has obviously gone into it and I’m very grateful but they could have put my brand on the cleaning bottle!” Who was the hardest interviewer in your final episode? “Definitely Claudine and that was because she was pulling at my heartstrings by talking about my children and my family. I said I regretted struggling with the balance of being a mum, businesswoman and a partner and that’s when I got emotional. The debate I had with Linda was something I was fine with, since I know my business and know what potential it has. The easiest questions to answer were any pertaining to my business and that’s where my passion came through.” We obviously only see edited bits on TV but I’m guessing the interviews were intense? “Yes. We were in there for a full day and each interviewer really does give you a thorough going over. Each one lasts for around half an hour and it’s quite an exhausting mental process. But I actually enjoyed it way more than I thought I would do and I was so grateful to be around successful people who I was in awe of.”

And what did you make of Sian being crowned as Lord Sugar’s Apprentice? “I love them both but Sian is a deserving winner. Her business has been established longer than Camilla’s and she’s put in a lot of hard work to build a relationship with celebrities who are endorsing her product, which in fashion retail, can be quite lucrative.” Lord Sugar said he was impressed with you, describing you as a grafter who is going to do well in life. But he couldn’t see the scaling up of your business. How come? “One of my biggest mistakes was not including my eco-friendly product range in my business plan. I found out in February that I was going to be on the show and I only had a few weeks to submit my plan. With two children and planning for my absence from my business I just didn’t have the dedicated time I would have liked to expand on my plan and the addition of my product range.” So what would you say to Lord Sugar if you could meet him for half an hour today? “I’d show him a plan that illustrates how we’re limiting the domestic cleaning side of the business and investing more in securing commercial contracts because the margins are bigger. Then I’d talk him through my recently launched product

range, which generates margins of between 60 and 80% profit. Both aspects of my business are very much scaleable and I’ll be able to convince him of this!” Your product range sounds like it has legs then? “Most definitely. We’ve just launched the Rhubarb Collection. This is the first of our personalised letterbox size home comfort gifting range and it includes rhubarb home mist and rhubarb handwash, plus it comes with a poem written by myself, which I hope inspires others.” You must have a busy January with lots going on? “Yes indeed. I’ve been asked to speak at various functions and will also be mentoring and coaching individuals who have contacted me for some inspiration. I’m passionate about helping others starting up businesses or initiatives while they find themselves in the same circumstances I was in. Needless to say I’m still looking for investment to scale up my business, so that’s something I’m exploring further and I’m keen to hear from anyone who’s interested! I’m really grateful for the support I’ve had while on the show, I feel that everyone in Peterborough has got behind me and it means the world, so thank you to all of you.”

Our vegan friends tell us there are some good vegan options at The Queens Head pub in the city centre, Weatherspoons’ vegan curry is lush and good value and they also offer a vegan breakfast, plus The Good Stuff on Cowgate are also a good vegan choice. Turtle Bay also offers a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes on a separate menu which we hear are very nice! The team from Resist! Peterborough has an active Vegetarian and Vegan Group so we caught up with Paul Benton from the group to see what they have coming up. Paul told ESP he feels there’s been a real shift towards eating differently: "The overwhelming success of our recent Thrive Vegan Festival shows veganism is

certainly on the up in the Peterborough region. We were also happy to see many non-vegans at the event and hope that Veganuary helps many of those making the transition. Veganuary is an amazing initiative and we have plans to help those taking part in next year's initiative.” Coming up is a vegan foodshare event on Wednesday January 16 which is open to everyone and should be a great opportunity to try out some vegan food at Soul Happy in the city centre at 7pm. You can even bring a vegan-friendly dish of your own to share if you are conﬁdent – there will be a room full of friendly faces to welcome you. The Peterborough Animal Rights group has a food share at the same venue on January 2 with lots of food available but of course also lots of chat about getting involved in the animal rights movement as well. New Year, new dining experience @ the Marriott What can we expect from the new menu? “The Cast Iron Bar & Grill is a contemporary menu with a varied choice for every diner. From classics like ﬁsh and chips to steaks on the grill. Sue Donnelly is a Spalding based International Award Winning Image Coach and the only UK Master of Fashion Feng Shui. For most of us, January is a dark, bleak time of the year. New Year Resolutions, and the ‘giving up’ of perceived pleasures, immediately translates as ‘hardship’, adding to the depression. For the past few years, I’ve given up with NYR’s. Instead, I’ve chosen a WORD. A word that will be at the forefront of my mind in everything I do for the next 12 months. I take my time choosing it because it needs to resonate ‘pleasure’ or at least ‘satisfaction’ on some level. Last year I chose STRONG. I decided initially that this applied solely to my physicality, my body, my ability to lift and carry, as I had suffered from a debilitating shoulder injury over the previous 2 years. However, I realised very quickly that it applied equally to other areas of my life. •

The right to say “no”, if I didn’t want to do something

To wear clothing that supported a stronger image, and to not worry about what others might think or say about my choices

•

To make decisions that came from a place of strength not weakness

•

To surround myself with people who were ‘radiators’ not ‘drains’

•

To do things on my own, with no requirement for others to keep me company

•

To spend money wisely by seeking out activities and experiences that fulﬁlled me rather than adding more material possessions to my life. This also included ‘shopping’ in my own wardrobe to ﬁnd new and exciting combinations of existing garments

Of course, a word on its own is powerless. Action, preferably enjoyable, is mandatory. I joined a gym for the ﬁrst time in my life and discovered I loved weight training. It added balance to my existing yoga practice. I became curious about what I could achieve so I signed up for Aerial Fitness. This is THE school elephant, we’re talking about here, but I’m slowly changing into something more reminiscent of a gazelle, albeit a pretty old one. I decided to have no attachment to the outcome, so failure is not an option, but curiosity is. It’s very liberating when you apply STRONG, rather than judgment, to anything new. My clothing instinctively became simpler, more stylish and understated, less colourful but more aesthetically pleasing. I could play with the different garments to create new looks very easily. My Malaysian clients call it ‘Zen’ and they love it on me. From this, I have now created a new Instagram called Mindfuldresser and it has changed how I look at and train image to my peers. STRONG has served me well this year and I will choose something equally as empowering for the years to come. I’m contemplating COMPASSION for 2019. The world could do with a massive dose, so if my small contribution makes a difference, I’ll be very happy indeed. Maybe this is something you can also do? Perhaps you want to evoke beauty, inspire joyfulness, increase your vitality, become curious or more adventurous, nurture and soothe your soul, get organised, or upscale and reﬁne your life adding a sense of quality. Whatever you decide upon put a positive spin on it. ...the way you handle fear and anxiety

We asked if you can overcome the fears and anxiety that might be holding you back? We've all experienced some level of fear and anxiety at some time in our lives and some of us experience it more often and at a higher level than others. Is fear irrational? Irrational basically means an inadequate use of reason. But is all fear irrational? I would certainly say no it isn't. A level of fear is pre-programmed in us and has been since the dawn of time and luckily it’s hardwired into most animals. If it weren't, then I'd be able to walk out of the door and pick a squirrel off the tree like an orange. So, fear is part of our makeup and we need it to stay alive by not picking up snakes or crossing the road with our eyes shut. Thousands of years ago, the constant dangers around us were far more serious in our lives. These dangers have drastically reduced, but our brains haven't caught up with these developments. Also, some of us have greater levels of fear and anxiety which have even been worsened during our childhood experiences. Most of us don't like being told the fear is irrational in the ﬁrst place. We tend to bulk the word irrational with words like mad or crazy. So, when someone tells you your fear is irrational it isn't usually very helpful as you probably feel like they’ve just told you you're mad which feels insulting and makes you feel belittled and not understood. In fact, some of us with a fear already feel it’s irrational, but that hasn't made the slightest bit of difference. When I see a giant house spider racing out from under the sofa, I know it's not out to get me, it’s just making a run for cover or going about its business. I know all this, that’s rational, but I still begin looking around nervously for all his or her friends that are hiding somewhere ready to pounce. Some level of fear is helpful, it can save our lives. Some fear is irrational, but most of us know this so pointing that out is useless and can be insulting.

Can we overcome our fears? If a person says, "can I get control of my life?" You may ask them, "Would you like to?" I say this for two reasons: 1. You have to see it as a choice. If you continue thinking that it’s out of your control, then it's impossible to change it. 2. Do you want to? Once you realise it's a choice to take control and you agree you want to do so, you then take the next steps.

Should you Face your Fears? My advice is this – Don't take huge leaps in facing fears, it can set you back even further. What if I decided to face my fear and went straight in to grab that huge spider? If it goes wrong all my fears will have become justiﬁed in my own opinion and I may be even more scared than I was before. So, face a fear in small steps not great leaps. The goal is to overcome a fear not to overcome a fear in the fastest time possible, it’s not a race. If you've had a fear all your life, then I'm sure you can take a few days, weeks even months to overcome it. More if needed. Just maintain progress in the right direction. Start small and work your way there slowly. If there are others that share the same fear, then overcome it as a group. The hugely successful project, Men United in Song is back for 2019, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. This has seen hundreds of local men with zero singing experience become part of the city’s successful male choir – so don’t write yourself off guys! In March they’ll be looking to sign up a minimum of 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset on Saturday May 11. Don’t think it’s for you? “I wanted to improve my singing and Men United in Song seemed like a great opportunity!” says Adam from Thorney. “Turning up for the ﬁrst rehearsal was daunting, but I immediately felt comfortable singing in such a relaxed environment. The highlight for me was knowing that we were creating something amazing for such a great cause. I've met all sorts of people, from farmers to accountants to new dads - without this project we would never have had the chance to meet and discover how we can really sing. I would highly recommend the experience!” Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising, there’s a fantastic social scene, too! Ultimately, it’s about a group

of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign, and why the charity seemed such a good ﬁt for the project.

900 CHALLENGE Time to get your workmates together and put you brawn and brains to the test in the Skanska 900 Challenge – are you up for it?

K the office parties are over and it’s back to the grindstone – what you need is a challenge to get you fired up for 2019! Here’s just the thing to blow away those Christmas cobwebs and get you and your workmates fired up… so have you go what it takes?! Local businesses are being invited to put their fittest and their brightest staff members up against a team from Skanska in ‘The 900 Challenge’ this January in aid of YMCA Trinity Group. Held in the Lifestyle Fitness gym at Peterborough Regional College on Saturday January 26, the charity event will raise money to provide a new mental wellbeing mobile app, Feel Stress Free, for secondary school pupils across the city. The 900 Challenge charity event is the brainchild of Skanska, in support of its corporate charity partner, YMCA Trinity Group. Skanska is challenging Peterborough businesses in an exciting, activity filled day, where both brawn and brains will be put to the test.

The fundraising event will include a series of challenges involving physical, mental and skill tests, all earning ‘miles’ toward each team’s target of 900 miles. Rod Allerton, Director of Development at YMCA Trinity Group commented: “We’re immensely grateful to Skanska for initiating this fundraising event and to Peterborough Regional College for sponsoring it and making their gym available for the day. Mental health is in a huge crisis amongst our young people – we know that three young people in every classroom suffer from a diagnosed mental health condition.” Rod continued: “We’re committed to supporting our young people, and the Feel Stress Free app detects, prevents and treats many low level mental health conditions. We urge local businesses to take on the challenge and help us fundraise for this worthy cause.” John Birkenhead, contract manager at Skanska added: “The 900 Challenge is our way of supporting a potentially life-changing project for young people in Peterborough. Mental health is such an important topic that we need to address. The more local businesses that join us in this fun and challenging event, the more support we can provide to the city’s young people through the use of Feel Stress Free!” The event runs from 10am - 4pm and costs £20 per person plus a donation and includes refreshments. You can’t beat a potential doginspired tear-jerker, and this year’s offering comes in the form of a Bryce Dallas Howard-voiced (Jurassic World) canine called Bella. She is the pet mainstay of owner (Jonah Hauer-King) and his Mum (Ashley Judd), but when Bella inadvertently goes missing and is unwittingly driven to a mountainous region far from home, she goes through a multitude of harsh scenarios to try and ﬁnd her way back to civilisation in this family adventure.

Nicole Kidman has picked up a Golden Globe nomination for this almost facially unrecognisable performance as a former LAPD detective. She stars as Erin Bell, who as a young cop was placed undercover with a gang in the Californian desert – which ended with tragic results. But when the leader of the gang re-emerges years later, she must work her way through the remaining members to try and exorcise the demons that destroyed her past. Sebastian ‘Winter Soldier’ Stan co-stars.

A major awards-season frontrunner – after notching an impressive six Golden Globe nominations – is this story of Dick Cheney, who wielded immense power as Vice President to George W Bush by wreaking political havoc across America and the globe. Oscar-winner Christian Bale has added a few pounds to play the lead in this biographical drama from the director of The Big Short, which boasts a top-notch A-list cast that includes Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION II (X1/PS4) After taking my time to review this highly-acclaimed title by giving it a good playthrough to see if there were any flaws – there wasn’t. It’s simply a masterpiece. The only gamers that will find fault in it are the COD generation who need to get into their first-person shooters with immediate high-octane running n’ gunning. They need not apply as this is a cinematic marvel that unfolds like a movie – and requires a more mature gamer with patience. Those who do will get plenty of bang for their buck in this open world adventure set in 1899 America. The end of the Wild West era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. When a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, you star as gunslinger Arthur Morgan, who’s forced to flee with his Van der Linde gang – and you must fight your way across breathtaking landscapes via a rugged heartland in order to survive. Through a wealth of options in Rockstar’s – the makers of Grand Theft Auto V – deepest and most complex world ever-created, RDR II is undoubtedly one of the greatest games of all-time – and an absolute pleasure to play on multiple levels. With an enthralling story, words like ‘spectacular’ and ‘unprecedented’ seamlessly accompany this watermark portrait of the Wild West – which has redefined what we expect from the genre from now on. It’s as simple as that.

TASTE Some just go off the smell, taste and texture of meat, or have never really enjoyed it but grew up in a family where meat was the dominant food. You often find this is why many are vegetarians first then step into veganism.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Veganuary January’s become known in recent years as Veganuary which encourages people to give up all animal produce for the month. It’s a great time after the amount of meat and dairy that many would have eaten during December. I’ve seen many continue this pathway after January or at least cut back on the amount of animal produce they consume.

In a report in The Guardian newspaper Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led research into reducing our environmental impact said - “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use. “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions. The research in that study showed that beef results in up to 105kg of greenhouse gases per 100g of meat, while tofu produces less than 3.5kg (see link below)

There are many reasons for this such as... HEALTH BENEFITS A carefully planned plant-based diet can be extremely nutritious and satisfying. However, some choices can be less than healthy as they’re very high in fats and refined carbohydrates, salt and chemical enhancers. I went to a vegan restaurant recently, but I found I needed to drink so much water the next day as the dishes were way too salty, the menu also had too much seiten which is a protein choice for many who can’t take the soya products. It’s fairly tasteless but can absorb flavours easily and have a texture of meat. Seiten does have nutrients, but it’s a very glutenous food and can be extremely difficult to digest. Many foods that look like and have the ‘pretend’ flavour of meat are highly manufactured and full of chemicals and salt – hardly a health food. However, I do feel that many of the vegan processed foods can be used as a transition away from, or to enjoy time off from, meat dominated meals but it’s not a place to stay if you’re seeking optimum health.

A diet rich in leafy greens, fruits, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, sprouts, mushroom, beans, pulses, sea vegetables, small amounts of fermented soy such as tempeh, hemp, coconut, oat and nut milks forms the basis of a healthy plant based diet with all the protein requirements we need if managed correctly. Too much animal protein is acidic, linked to kidney stones, cardiovascular disease, cancer particularly of the bowel, and more. ANIMAL WELFARE This is of course a controversial one and I’d recommend you look into it closely if you’re truly considering going vegan long term (I’ve added some links at the bottom of the page). Most of us are guilty of not really considering where the meat in our Spag Bol comes from or what dairy production really involves, but the treatment of the animals is one of the main reasons some people make this dietary choice.

Many religions advocate veganism – they believe we are all one, and when we take into the body the flesh of an animal, we also carry the information or the energy of that animal especially any suffering it endured. It does make interesting reading for those looking to explore this further. January is not a call for everyone to turn vegan and stay vegan (some do as an energetic shift takes place) but more of an exploration to find ways to enjoy foods from our plant kingdom that can support our health, wellbeing, animal welfare and the environment.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

It seemed so far away when I was a kid, but here we are, a new year and another transfer window. However, this window doesn’t involve chocolate. It’s been an incredibly busy time at Peterborough United in the last few months and the busy festive period provided no let up. When I spoke to Ivan afterwards, he dedicated his first treble and match ball to his nan and grandad looking down on him from above, which was a wonderful sentiment. Of course, around the festive period, we visited the local children’s ward at the Peterborough City Hospital and put on an open training session and a ‘meet the players’ event at our stadium with kids breaking up for the festive period.

efore Christmas, we were part of an extraordinary Emirates FA Cup second round replay at Bradford City where we eventually won on penalty kicks after a 4-4 draw following extra time. Our striker Ivan Toney scored his first ever hat-trick in that game and his first goal was a stunning freekick from the centre circle. It reminded me a lot of David Beckham against Wimbledon all those years ago. However, Ivan’s was better. Posh and Becks have always gone well together.

These community events are vitally important to us as a football club. Our Schools Initiative saw us engage with over 8,500 children at just under 40 Primary Schools. All of the youngsters received a free ticket to watch Posh play with an adult also admitted free of charge. That’s over 17,000 people that had the opportunity to pick one of three Posh matches. We have to keep this going. Our aim is to engage with over 25,000 children by the end of the season.

Of course, while there are many positives, the end of last year was a sad one too as we lost our former owner and chairman Peter Boizot at the age of 89. I know my former colleague at Posh and current ESP columnist Pep Cipriano has written a fitting tribute to the exPizza Express Owner, but I wanted to add my condolences to his friends and family. Although Peter was not someone who I came into direct contact with on many occasions (I left that to Pep back then), he was a very passionate person who wanted to give back to the city that he loved. It is very rare to see that. He was also someone who was determined to bring a bit of razzmatazz to football matches and I recall numerous different bands, marching and otherwise, entertaining fans ahead of kick-off. Fair play, he may have got a little bit of stick, but making the match day a vibrant experience has, and will always be, our aim. January can be a dark month, both literally and figuratively, but there’s plenty to look forward too. Football never stops. Well unless it snows. Then we have a few issues!

Peterborough Arts Cinema New Season You’ve probably guessed by the number of ﬁlm reviews I do for ESP that I love the cinema. It’s my ‘Happy Place’. There’s nothing better than switching off from life and immersing yourself into another world for a few hours.

n numerous occasions I’ll fancy a trip to the Showcase or Cineworld and realise that I’ve pretty much seen everything already… and then I remember we have somewhere else to watch movies. The Peterborough Arts Cinema is an independent cinema run on a non-profit basis by a committed group of volunteers known as the Peterborough Film Society. They’ve been bringing quality cinema to locations across Peterborough for over 70 years – currently located at the John Clare Theatre, at the Central Library. Many of their presentations would have had a limited initial release and therefore they offer the opportunity to see great films on the big screen that won't have been shown in multiplex cinemas. As an example of why you should give the Peterborough Arts Cinema a try, my favourite film of 2016 was Sing Street – which wasn’t released at all at Showcase or Cineworld. Had it not have been for this wonderful place, I’d probably never had seen the film that I now love. What I love most about the Peterborough Arts Cinema is that those that attend often have a greater passion for film – with many heading over to a nearby pub afterwards to discuss what they’d seen. I highly recommend you check it out. They’ve already got some great films lined up for Thursday night this year starting this month. Perhaps I’ll see you there. 2019 New Year, New Gigs!

For those who have gained an unhealthy amount of weight over Christmas and are struggling with the miserable weather January brings, I’m guessing you may need cheering up at the moment. So to help you have a laugh (but also engage those abdominals and increase those serotonin levels – you’re welcome), here’s my round up of the best comedy gigs coming to Peterborough this year...

Luisa Omielan: Politics for Bitches Luisa had a pretty good year in 2018 after a sellout Fringe show and being named one of BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits. In 2019 she’ll be continuing the momentum by touring her critically acclaimed ‘Politics for Bitches’ show at the Key Theatre in March; however Luisa has no interest in cheap laughs. Her comedy is about the things that matter, from body dysmorphia (her famous thigh gap joke went viral), to male suicide and cancer. Expect both honest and hilarious discussions on public spending, cannabis, high brow concepts... and dick jokes.

Kieran Hodgson: 75 I think I’ve raved about this show enough a few months ago, but 75 is a show that deserves it! Described by the Times as ‘ravishingly entertaining, informative, full of insight and plenty of laughs’, this is a chance to see a fantastic Fringe show right on your doorstep at the Key Theatre. Performing in April, Kieran Hodgson achieved another Best Show nomination at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards last year for this epic and surprising tale of how Britain joined Europe in the ﬁrst place, making it an absolute must-see for comedy fans and those who love their political satire.

James Acaster: Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999

Sindhu Vee: Sandhog As seen on QI and Have I Got News for You, Sindhu Vee will be embarking on a UK tour this year with her critically acclaimed show Sandhog. Performing at the Key Theatre in March, Sandhog offers witty and hilarious observations on marriage, parenting and her own ageing parents which helped to bag her a Best Newcomer nomination at the 2018 Edinburgh Comedy Awards. This highly anticipated show has also been described by Funny Women UK as ‘way ahead of the curve when it comes to comedy of the intrinsically female kind’. 44 www.espmag.co.uk

A show about how 1999 was the best year of his life, James Acaster will be touring his brand new show at the Cresset this July. After releasing his first book and appearing on the most recent series of Taskmaster, Acaster has an established reputation as one of stand-up’s most original voices. In addition to recording his masterful Netflix collection ‘Repertoire’, Acaster has also achieved a recordbreaking five consecutive nominations for Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.

Jonathan Pie: Fake News Best known as the exasperated news reporter with over 1.2 million Facebook followers, Jonathan Pie has been seen all over the world, with his response to the election of Donald Trump being viewed online more than 150 million times worldwide. Described as ‘brilliant, brave, raw and analytical’ by Ricky Gervais, Jonathan Pie will be performing at the Cresset in November and will be one of the hottest tickets this year – book now for a scathingly satirical and sensational show.

What have been some of the highlights? “My major highlight has to be DJ’ing at the Mark Knight event. I was on before he went on and helped organise the event from start to ﬁnish. We’re now good friends an plan on creating something very special this year... a little teaser there lol. “Also another big highlight is my Platinum night where I’m trying to give younger talent the opportunity to gain experience in the industry. Recently local DJ Joe Younger approached me and he’s been playing the warm up for my PRL events and he played on the Mark Knight line up which I know he really enjoyed.”

Q&A WITH ... DJ ALEX VACCA RESIDENT AT THE SOLSTICE When did you first start DJ-ing and what got you into it? “I always had an interest in music from a very early age, I loved listening to all sorts of music growing up. I was lucky enough to go abroad at 18 years-old to go and work on the Greek islands which is where I had access to some amazing nights and DJ equipment, I slowly watched and taught myself to mix on Vinyl & CD’s in the club during the day time. “Moving forward I asked to DJ in the nightclub as a resident and moved forward from there with my DJ career. I’ve played at some amazing venues and I’m currently the resident for both The Solstice in Peterborough and The Modiﬁed Nationals Car Show (yearly event).” How long have you been at The Solstice now and how would you describe your nights? “I’ve been at The Solstice just over 3 years now. I took over from Steve Andrews in the amazing Sol Garden on Saturday nights, holding some of the best nights in the city. We’re known for our house music in the Sol Garden on Saturdays and we pride ourselves on continuing this into the future. “Over the past 12 months we’ve brought some of the most amazing artists such as… Camelphat, Sandy Rivera, Sam Divine, Low Steppa and most recently Toolroom legend and boss Mark Knight. I also hold my monthly Platinum Radio London event which gives some great DJs opportunity to play in a club which they may not usually get to play at. “However none of this would’ve been possible without the amazing owners and management in place at The Solstice, Michael and Eileen Boyle, Mary Boyle, Sean Boyle and Peter Bell are the people who’ve supported my decisions and input since the day I started. I’ve always been made to feel at home at The Solstice and the family run ownership can be seen from a mile off. I have been given the responsibility of ensuring we have the correct DJs in place and also event management when it comes to our acts with our marketing team, to which I feel very privileged.”

The Mixology crew have lined up an absolute belter for their ﬁrst event of 2019 and are birnging FUSE resident Archie Hamilton to Peterborough! Archie Hamilton, the London based DJ/Producer and three-time label owner, has established himself as one of the scene’s most sought-after artists. Now you can catch him in action live in the city at Red Room on Broadway on Friday February 1. Within a short space of time, Archie’s already garnered accolades from the highest echelons of house and techno, both via his imprints: Moscow Records, Moss Co. and Arkityp and through his own output. Boasting an ever-growing discography Archie’s sound, which nods to UK rave culture’s heyday whilst ﬁrmly facing forwards, has found a home on lauded labels like Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels, Be Chosen, Pleasure Zone and FUSE. As a DJ, Archie manages a busy touring schedule, delivering dynamic sets at the best clubs around the world. Among the most notable are his regular appearances at global event brand FUSE, London’s Fabric, Ibiza’s Amnesia and Privilege as well as leading international festivals: Sonus, ADE and Sonar. Warming-up for Archie on the night it’s their trio of talented resident selectors: Tom Skinner, James Chan & Dan Clare (Maur). Maur’s ‘Gospel Man’, the debut release on Mixo’s MXO Records has been garnering support from the likes of Mixmag, Data Transmission, Detlef, Roger Sanchez, David Guetta & DJ SKT and is riding high in the Beatport charts. They also welcome back Lee Haslam after his amazing set at their East End Dubs event and making his debut at Mixo it’s Data Transmission Radio’s Jack Burt.

What sort of crowd do you get? Mixed ages? “Having been at The Solstice for a few years I’ve watched the crowds and how they’ve changed, but one thing we’ve always maintained is the older crowd. The Solstice has always drawn the older crowd from 25 upwards. “We like to look after our customers as much as we can too. We’re currently looking at what we can bring to the city to help itch the younger crowd to come and experience The Solstice in full swing. I think a lot of people are unaware that we are actually a ﬁve room venue on Friday and Saturday night with the following… Solstice, Sol Garden, Harry’s, Cargo and Eden all providing an entertainment venue rather than an individual club, for all ages and styles of music.” What can we look forward to over the coming weeks? “We had some amazing nights last year including the World Cup Street Parties, which by any means are going to be hard to beat, but we have a few special projects in the pipeline for this year! You will have to keep your eyes peeled on our social and here in ESP for the info ﬁrst.” What do you think of the club scene in the city and what more would you like to see? “Ahhh Peterborough’s club scene… where to start, ha ha! I think with DJ’ing in the city for well over 10 years, it has massively changed. I’ve seen venues come and go, the crowds change and where at one point it dwindled down to two venues really, I was unsure on what direction the city was going in. “Recently we’ve seen some refurb’s on existing venues and along with new venues opening in the city that has given it a boost which is a good thing. “We at The Solstice are trying bring some of the UK’s and the world’s best acts to the city as are others too. I think if everyone keeps pushing in that direction and we can entice the crowds to keep coming out then we will improve the clubbing scene once again.”

What are your favourite tracks for filling the dancefloor? “I think being able to pick a specific song to fill a dancefloor is not easy to do as it always depends on your crowd that evening. However if I had to pick something I would say everyone loves a good classic house tune, whether it be the original or just hearing the lyrics in a new remix, something people are familiar with and have memories too.”

Craig David in Concert So if you’re feeling dismal as it’s January and you’re broke and bored cast your mind to the summer and get excited about a major gig coming to Peterborough. If you missed the news (or didn’t get bought tickets for Christmas!) let me remind you that global superstar Craig David and his full live band are heading to the ABAX Stadium on Saturday June 8. It’s great to see the concerts which started at London Road with Elton John and continued with Steps and Blue last summer are gaining momentum and have attracted another big name who should have wide appeal having launched such a successful return to the music scene of late. Some will remember him for his huge hit 7 Days and Walking Away while others will recognise his more recent singles Nothing Like This, Heartline and I Know You. He’ll be joined by international DJ Sigala who’ll be bringing a full live band set, and rising star DJ Nathan Dawe. Local guitar hero Gizz Butt has been in touch and we were excited to hear his original punk band Janus Stark are back with their first new material in 21 years and a video! Peterborough star Gizz gained fame playing with The Prodigy and remains a regular on the local music circuit with his great covers band The Dizzy Miss Lizzys, but it’s his punk rock he’s known for and it’s great to see Janus Stark return. Janus Stark initially existed between 1996 and 2002 and after a split with their label and a parting of ways with drummer Pinch (current drummer of The Damned), Janus Stark eventually split in 2002. In 2018, however, Gizz decided to reform Janus Stark and asked Richard Gombault (of 90s pop punk trio Midget) to join, along with long standing close friends Fozzy Dixon and Simon Martin. The band’s fronted by Gizz on lead vocals and lead guitar, with Richard Gombault on guitar and vocals, Si Martin on bass and vocals and Fozzy Dixon on drums. The new single Shuffling the Pack is supported by the band’s first ever video. “It’s a tale of promises that lead to betrayal,” vents Gizz. “When someone lays down the red carpet to you and promises the earth, yet before you know it, your honeymoon is over, and you’ve been shuffled to the back of the pack. “Personally, I’ve been at the receiving end of a ‘promisor’ a number of times, fooled by the proverbial dangly carrot. A few friends of mine helped me recognise the signs. The video represents a promise that I am intended to follow. This time I suspect something, so I’m going to confront this villain. This time he’s chosen the wrong card!” It’s exciting times for Gizz and the band as they’re playing a Camden Rocks all dayer in Camden at The Monarch on January 12

Are you Ready to Funk? There’s a new funky functions band on the local scene and they’re set to get their name out there with a special charity gig in aid of Sue Ryder. Callum’s been in touch from Let’s Funk a covers band performing 70's & 80's Funk, Soul, RnB & Disco-Boogie, who told me – “We’re a professional function band in Peterborough and we’ve recently re-launched the band due to line-up changes.” They have their debut gigged book. It's on Friday March 1 at the Parkway Sports and Social Club in Peterborough and already have tickets on sale. Callum told me – “The proceeds of the gig go to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice as a lot of the band members as well as the Parkway's entertainment manager have had loved ones cared for there, and we all really can't praise the team of staff enough for how much we appreciate everything they do.” The night will also include a 2 hour DJ set on the night, so expect over four hours of solid entertainment from that era for £8 entry. Austin Gold to rock the Key Theatre Again It’s fair to say that Peterborough rock band Austin Gold had a pretty amazing year last year and here at ESP we’re big fans. This year they’ve already lined up a return to the Key Theatre with a gig on Saturday August 31. We were there for the last one and it was amazing! Tickets may already have sold out but check in with the box ofﬁce to see if you’re lucky. The guys are heading into this year as a four-piece as guitarist Jack Cable decided to call time on his involvement with the band in an amicable parting. They’ve seen the release of their album Before Dark Clouds, tracks receiving regular airplay on Planet Rock, toured with Gun and have appeared all over the country but didn’t forget their hometown fans. Austin Gold performed here at the Brewery Tap and gave an incredible acoustic performance in St John’s Church. Join the team in 2019 which is our 20th year in print and help promote the ESP brand throughout the entire Greater Peterborough Area.

Get out and meet new people, chat and have fun selling display advertising and advertorials in ESP Magazine, banner adverts and stories on ESP Online and media campaigns on ESP Social all on a commission basis.

No previous media sales experience is necessary as full training will be given and it’s your personality that will really win you the role.

We offer a fully ﬂexible 20hr week with an annual basic salary of £8,320 per annum plus an uncapped commission based on 10% of all of your sales. With our target driven commission structure your first year earnings will reach £13,000. M E D I A
