Eastern Angles return to Peterborough’s Key Theatre Studio with a spoof on the well-known panto genre. The Fenland Screamers & Other Boggy Tales, from the makers of Stoat Hall and The Mystery of St. Finnigan’s Elbow, is a New Year’s Eve party with a difference... It is the 30th December, 1930. Young amateur sleuth siblings Sloppy & Sixpence arrive at a remote house in the middle of Clinker Fen, invited by a distant relative to celebrate the New Year. Tempted by the idea of a grand weekend party, they find the place deserted apart from the creepy butler, Tangent. He’s expecting them and despite their misgivings, they decide to stay. Other guests arrive, all strangers to one another, and as the fog descends, cutting them off from the outside world, they pass the time by telling stories. It becomes apparent that they all have a guilty secret, and are unnerved when Tangent tells them the local legend of the Fenland Screamers, avenging spirits who emerge from the bogs to drag the guilty back down into the mire. When one of the guests mysteriously disappears, they all begin to fear for their lives. Can Sloppy & Sixpence solve the mystery before the Screamers come again and take them all, one by one? The cast of five includes Joe Leat (The

Mystery of St Finnigan’s Elbow, Everything Must Go!) and Geri Allen (Stoat Hall). Joining them will be Eloise Kay and Anthony Pinnick who recently starred in The Mariner with Common Ground Theatre Company. James Macnaughton also joins the cast after recently performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Romeo & Juliet and BBC’s The Hollow Crown. From the sublime to the ridiculous you can expect a quirky quick paced farce punctuated with original catchy songs. Suitable for kids both sides of 40! This eccentric festive musical comedy tours to Peterborough’s Key Theatre Studio from January 22 – 26. Book your tickets on 01733 207239.

Twelfth Night brings Comedy to Peterborough Cathedral

Jack and His Giant Beanstalk If you’ve had your fill of the kids stuff, let loose with this truly grown-up panto on Thursday January 24! Also starring BGT finalist Danny Beard and All Together Now judge Divina De Campo. Tickets are £19.50 on 01733 265705 or visit www.cresset.co.uk.

One to look forward to is a fab retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at Peterborough Cathedral like you’ve never seen before! In the setting of the cathedral’s stunning Norman architecture the talented Gearbox Theatre Company will be bringing us their colourful production combining comedy, a sixties skiffle band and Shakespeare’s poetic language! This version of Twelfth Night is set in the swinging sixties in Illyria where music really is ‘the Food of Love’. Cesario loves Orsino, Orsino loves Olivia, Olivia loves Cesario … but Cesario is really Viola, Sebastian’s twin sister … and is Sebastian really drowned? And then there is Malvolio … cruelly deceived into yellow stockings and crossed-garters by the riotous ‘rogues’ of this enchanting tale. There is love and marriage, laughter, mischief and cross-dressing. It’s being performed from February 13 -15 so it would make a great alternative Valentine’s night out! Time to party @ the Straw Bear Festival

Photos: Chris Brudenell

It’s one mad party but we love it! You can’t beat the annual (slightly bonkers) Straw Bear Festival in Whittlesey for brightening up a January weekend. Get those Christmas hat and scarf sets out, wrap up and head to town. The streets will be packed, the pubs will be heaving and despite the chill Whittlesey will be in party mood. The traditional Straw Bear Festival may have its roots in times past but modern day crowds just love the chance to blow away the festive cobwebs and it’s always a busy one. Follow the ‘bear’ as it processes around the town centre from 10.30am – 3.30pm enjoying a tipple on the way. There’ll be the most bizarre looking dance groups entertaining you throughout the day, story telling sessions, poetry, food stalls and music. If you’ve never been before we can tell you there’s a great atmosphere and expect the unexpected! A concert kicks things off on Friday January 18 at the Ivy Leaf Club with tickets £10 and music from Jack Rutter, Ursula Holden Gill and Keith Donnelly. The big event is on Saturday January 19 throughout the town ending with a barn dance at the Sir Harry Smith Community College (tickets £12) with music from the Banter ceilidh band. Finally round things off on the Sunday at 12 noon at the college for the bear burning. The main event is free but for tickets to the concert and dance and for all you need to know head to www.strawbear.org.uk.

Vodafone Gigafast takes off in Peterborough! Remember when you got that great toy for Christmas, ripped open the packaging, got it set up and then slumped disappointedly as you realised it was ‘batteries not included’ and you’d just have to wait…

Y

ou’ve probably felt much the same when you’re trying to stream your favourite TV show, the kids are trying to play a game online and your partner’s Google search is all dragging your broadband speed back to the Stone Age. Ever felt you’ve wanted to put a rocket up your broadband as you watch that buffering icon trundle round on your screen just at the exciting part of a film you’re trying to stream or trying to upload something urgent? Yep it’s more ‘why are we waiting?’ than WiFi – you’ve got the gadgets you just can’t use them fast enough or all at once. Well folks, get excited because this year in Peterborough you can! Vodafone Gigafast Broadband is here and it’s set to give you download and upload speeds 20 times and 150 times faster than the average fixed broadband connection in the UK. Sandra Weir from Vodafone says Vodafone Gigafast Broadband will transform the way you live –“One family member can stream a live event on television in Ultra HD and in another room, someone can stream a movie or TV series in Ultra HD on a separate device. The rest of the family can also play an online virtual reality game and a host of

connected devices in the background can keep your home safe and secure. And it can all happen at the same time!” Now we’re excited, but it gets better. The roll out of Vodafone Gigafast Broadband in Peterborough is either live now, or soon to be live, in Paston Ridings, Dogsthorpe, Welland, Eastfield, New England, Millfield and Lincoln Road with more to come across the area.

Unlike most broadband services, Vodafone Gigafast Broadband sends data over a pure optical fibre network...

Sandra said – “Customers can choose from three Vodafone Gigafast Broadband packages: 100, 500 or 900Mbps, with prices starting at £28 per month. A discount of £5 per month is available to customers that already have a Vodafone mobile contract.” So what sets Vodafone Gigafast Broadband apart from all the others who seem to promise a speedier connection?

Packages range from 100Mbps to 900Mbps, so there’s a suitable package for every household and for every budget... Packages start from £28 per month, and you get a £5 discount per month if you are an existing Vodafone pay monthly mobile customer.

Sandra explains – “Unlike most broadband services, Vodafone Gigafast Broadband sends data over a pure optical fibre network at every stage of the connection, rather than over old copperbased telephone cables. This full fibre service is not only faster and more reliable, it provides identical upload and download speeds. “At 900Mbps, Vodafone Gigafast Broadband allows customers to download a video game for PS4 or Xbox One (50GB) in eight minutes rather than two hours and 40 minutes.” Gaming heaven here we come, but if Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption II and Call of Duty Black Ops 4 just aren’t your thing, that’s not the only benefit of course. You can also save a whopping 32GB of photos, videos and documents to the cloud in five minutes instead of 12 hours and 40 minutes! With Gigafast Broadband, Vodafone will help bring full fibre to Peterborough households that currently don’t have gigabit-capable connections. Vodafone’s most advanced router yet is included free of charge. This is in addition to free installation worth £49* when you pre-order, unlimited data usage, home phone service, free Vodafone content controls and antivirus software free for six months. It’s sounding like a no brainer, so register your interest and you’ll be the first to know when you can go for it. To pre-order Vodafone Gigafast Broadband go to: www.vodafone.co.uk/Gigafast.

eterborough Cathedral has enjoyed a special year in the spotlight celebrating its 900th anniversary and now 2019 gets off to a great start with another big event – the annual Katharine of Aragon Festival. If you’ve watched any of the TV shows about the Tudors, or just like a bit of history, this is a great opportunity to find out more and enjoy some unique activities. The Tudor-themed festival organised by Peterborough Cathedral and Vivacity takes place from January 25 – 27 and always proves another popular draw for the city’s iconic landmark where Katharine is laid to rest. The festival marks the date in January 1536 when King Henry VIII’s first wife was buried at Peterborough Abbey having died in exile at Kimbolton Castle. The Festival programme includes a talk by the bestselling historian and author Tracy Borman at the John Clare Theatre, Tudor history tours of the city and cathedral, drop-in living history days for families at Vivacity Peterborough Museum and a candlelit, A Merrie Tudor Evening, with hog roast and period musicians at the cathedral.

On Saturday and Sunday there is a drop-in living history event for families at the Museum, At Home with the Tudors, where visitors can meet the barber surgeon, an armourer and a Tudor lady. On Saturday at 7pm A Merrie Tudor Evening takes place in the beautiful 16th Century New Building at the cathedral, with a Tudor-style supper, period music and a candlelit tour. Meanwhile, at 7.30pm in the John Clare Theatre, Tracy Borman will be speaking on the theme of Henry VIII and the Men Who Made Him. King Henry is famous for his tumultuous marriages, but this talk will see his personality through different eyes. With family activities, tours, talks and music, there is plenty to interest people of all ages. LOOKING FOR THE GOOD Mitch Wise, UK National Champion

We all have our dreams of a new lifestyle, new location or new chapter in our lives and maybe ‘lodge living’ is the answer.

Y

ou might already know about the great range of activities at Tallington Lakes but whether you’re an active type or just like the lakeside country location it could also prove to be the perfect place to call home. If you’re looking to make a move and the modern housing estate just isn’t your thing or you just want a bolt hole to escape the stresses of life and work, did you know you can buy or rent a beautiful lodge at Tallington Lakes with The Goodlife Lodge Company? If you want an active lifestyle, Tallington Lakes is the perfect location offering fantastic on-site sporting and leisure facilities to enjoy 365 days a year – and if you’re not, how lovely is it to sit by the water, kick back and just watch and enjoy the water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing, canoeing and fishing! Claire Alsop from The Goodlife Lodge Company says a lodge at Tallington Lakes has lots to offer people looking to change their lifestyle whether it’s for a new home or weekend retreat – “It’s a secure 24/7 site. These are single storey dwellings so if people can’t find bungalows, they often come here. They’re great value and of course there’s entertainment and facilities on site including a bar and restaurant offering entertainment daily.

“It’s a great place for fresh air and walking as we are pet friendly, there are water sports for active families including waterskiing, wake boarding, paddle boarding, jet skiing and a 15m rock climbing tower. In the winter there’s tobogganing and a dry ski slope.” You can grab a bite to eat or a drink at The Lakeside Bar & Restaurant which offers great food with friendly staff. In the summer you can chill out on the terrace and make the most of the outdoor heated swimming pool, children’s splash pool and sunbathing deck.

There are a selection of plots with some overlooking the lakes and others set back in the country park, with a variety of luxury lodges and leisure homes to suit your lifestyle. Price wise the lodges are £65,000 upwards to £300,000 to buy and everything in between. They have stylish interiors and all mod cons and each home has its own generous plot with plenty of room for outside living – they also help you to make the most of your outdoor space with a free design service.

It’s a very quiet and tranquil sort of lifestyle.

But lakeside living isn’t just for the active crowd or holidays, Claire says – “Lots of people live here 365 days a year as their one and only home. It’s a friendly neighbourhood and close to Stamford and Peterborough for work too. “It’s a very quiet and tranquil sort of lifestyle. Offering safety, and living on the water is relaxing and helps to combat stress.”

No To Dry January Fact: male fertility is falling by 1.4% a year. Fact: Italian researchers recommend four bottles of beer a week boosts sperm count. Fact: I need to be plied with Peroni please.

Both former champions have the utmost respect for one another and are in regular contact. I was in the presence of two ordinary people who have done, and continue to do, extraordinary things. Most of all, both share a passion for grass roots boxing and what the sport can do for helping to rejuvenate the lives of troubled young people. And let me tell you now, if I didn’t stumble across a potential champion from the Finchley club that night then I’ll eat a packet of raw spaghetti. Those young boxers were something else and with many inspired by Sean and their club legend Anthony Joshua, you can see where they get their motivation from. Watch this space...

Faces of ESP

Still Packing a Punch!

As part of our continued celebration of more than 20 years of this excellent magazine I thought it would be rude not to mention the annual Face of ESP competition. It was a tough job but each year my editor insisted I should be photographed with the winner and here’s a couple of ones I think I look half decent in. Becca Evans (our first Face of ESP) and Susan Saunders made me look better than any photoshop wizard could, so thank you ladies. At its height there was no bigger competition for ladies to enter. The prize of being on the front cover for one special issue and representing the magazine for an entire year with all the benefits that came with it was a hard to resist scenario. Sponsors made the coveted title even more appealing with dozens of experiences and freebies thrown in, which meant the Face of ESP had the social diary of a modern-day celebrity. All of our winners took positive experiences from holding the crown for a year and their personalities, confidence and self-esteem flourished as a result. The grand finale event was always a glamorous affair where the ladies would be in their finest frocks and the men in their sharpest dinner suits. The finals night was the talk of the town for weeks and as a head judge it was always one of the most challenging jobs to help pick the lucky winner. So, to all our Face of ESP winners, thanks for the memories and how about one winners photoshoot together?!

It’s the photo I’ve been waiting to take for a very long time and here I am pictured with two of the fiercest warriors of British boxing from the 20th century. I was honoured to join Gary De’Roux on a visit to a Finchley Amateur Boxing Club show in Tottenham and meet the man Gary beat to win the British featherweight title from in 1991. Sean Murphy was a tough fighter and a worthy champion but on that night in March 28 years ago, he surrendered his crown in the fifth round to Gary in what’s still regarded as one of the most CAUGHT IN THE ACT! exciting I’m glad the festi ve season is over . Office Ch ris tm featherweight title as jumper envy become a bit unco was starting to fights of all time. mfortable.

Arrivederci Peter

MY

WORD OF THE MONTH

DIET

Proud Influencer It's always nice to be recognised for my achievements by fellow professionals and I ended 2018 by winning team accolades in the Athene Communications Peterborough Regional PR & Media Awards. I was proud to have led the Peterborough Celebrates 900 campaign, proud in advising and supporting the Anna's Hope world record for the largest gathering of fairies and proud to have helped steer the city council's internal communications campaign in their move to Fletton Quays. None of these successes would have been achieved without excellent teamwork and I thank my colleagues for being the best. Most of all I was proud to see this magazine's editor win Communicator of the Year (welcome to the fold Sharon) for being at the helm of ESP since its inception more than 20 years ago. Like Martin Scorsese, when he finally won the Academy Award for Best Director a few years ago, it was a long time coming and fully deserved. Well done Sharon!

Much has been written already about the passing of Peter Boizot. He was a true ambassador for Peterborough and invested lorry loads of money into our city in a bid to make it a better place for all of us. Peter was Posh chairman for a spell when I was at the football club and I have vivid memories of working with him. He had class, sincerity and enjoyed the finer things in life – Peter was all about quality. He had an air of royalty about him and it somehow felt right he being at the helm of his city's football club. It was his quirkiness that tickled me the most. Nothing was ever rushed or urgent, as I discovered on many occasion, particularly when I was on deadline to write the matchday programme. I needed to get Peter's column done on a Monday and most of that day would be spent on a wild goose chase trying to track him down across the city. He'd almost always end up at the Great Northern Hotel or in his restaurant, Gaston. When I'd show up at Gaston he'd spend an hour taking me on a tour of the kitchens and asking me to sample the evening menu dishes. And on another occasion he wanted my opinion on what style cutlery and dining chairs he should ship over from Italy. I'd like to think I had an influence on the red and blue chairs he finally settled with! So, on most occasions his column would have to wait or I'd end up writing it and weaving cutlery and chairs into the story, which was a challenge that most certainly honed my creative writing skills. To say Peter was unique is an understatement. He was one in a million and my life at the time was certainly enriched by knowing him. Rest in peace Peter.

It’s your New Year resolution but please don’t bother, you’ll fail like the rest of us. Temptation is everywhere and here’s a reminder: Big Mac Meal, Bargain Bucket Meal, Greggs (lots of them), Easter eggs (yes, they’ll be in the shops tomorrow), tea dunking, almond croissants (my guilty pleasure, please bury me with one), cakes (it’s always someone’s birthday in depressing January), wine (Jesus drank it, so it’s a sin not to).

We'll be Playing Again at Samm's! ESP were at the opening night of SAMM'S and the only photos that survived are a bit too wild for my column... So, here's a sensible one of me on the morning of its official opening, sipping a nonalcoholic cocktail made by the lovely (and very pink) Shannon. A packed opening night attracted a diverse crowd and was topped off by excellent local band Velocity whose rocking tunes even got owner Matt and his crew busting some moves behind the bar! The former Costa Coffee building has been transformed into what we were used to seeing at Puzzles? bar. I'm loving the bespoke ceiling lights by the way. This popular independent haunt on Bridge Street continues to serve up some great drinks and live music but everything in SAMM'S is just a little better. There's more lager draught choice, an improved cocktail menu, a bigger selection of beers in the fridge and barista-style coffees. It's open from midday and for all the latest visit their Facebook page @SAMMSPeterborough.

A FINE POLISH BY OUR QUEEN OF CLEAN

N

urun Ahmed was our first starlet a few years back, Joseph Valente won it in 2015 and Khadija Kalifa from Bourne made it to the final five ‘interviews’ stage after impressing all the way through the process. It’s been fascinating watching how the candidates’ personalities evolve week after week and how each of them learn about themselves in and out of business. Khadija had a bit of a rocky start as she went about establishing her direct approach to tasks and to some of the other candidates, but you could clearly see a positive change in her after the first three or four episodes.

I’ve met Khadija on a few occasions and have been struck by how mature and level-headed she is for a 29 year-old. The boss of eco-friendly cleaning firm Opal & Pearl has already gone places and will certainly be scaling the dizzy heights of business for as long as she wants to. We had a quick catch-up after she left the process and we’ll be chatting more next month about what’s in store for her in 2019 – and the recipe for the cinnamon and mince pie flavoured chocolate she invented in week 10 of the show! Another season of The Apprentice has come and gone and once again Peterborough can be proud of its representation on the show.

PEP TALK... Let’s start with the ‘Queen of Clean’ portrait painting you were presented with in the You’re Fired! show... “It was certainly a nice surprise and I’ve put it up in my office. A lot of thought has obviously gone into it and I’m very grateful but they could have put my brand on the cleaning bottle!” Who was the hardest interviewer in your final episode? “Definitely Claudine and that was because she was pulling at my heartstrings by talking about my children and my family. I said I regretted struggling with the balance of being a mum, businesswoman and a partner and that’s when I got emotional. The debate I had with Linda was something I was fine with, since I know my business and know what potential it has. The easiest questions to answer were any pertaining to my business and that’s where my passion came through.” We obviously only see edited bits on TV but I’m guessing the interviews were intense? “Yes. We were in there for a full day and each interviewer really does give you a thorough going over. Each one lasts for around half an hour and it’s quite an exhausting mental process. But I actually enjoyed it way more than I thought I would do and I was so grateful to be around successful people who I was in awe of.”

16 www.espmag.co.uk

And what did you make of Sian being crowned as Lord Sugar’s Apprentice? “I love them both but Sian is a deserving winner. Her business has been established longer than Camilla’s and she’s put in a lot of hard work to build a relationship with celebrities who are endorsing her product, which in fashion retail, can be quite lucrative.” Lord Sugar said he was impressed with you, describing you as a grafter who is going to do well in life. But he couldn’t see the scaling up of your business. How come? “One of my biggest mistakes was not including my eco-friendly product range in my business plan. I found out in February that I was going to be on the show and I only had a few weeks to submit my plan. With two children and planning for my absence from my business I just didn’t have the dedicated time I would have liked to expand on my plan and the addition of my product range.” So what would you say to Lord Sugar if you could meet him for half an hour today? “I’d show him a plan that illustrates how we’re limiting the domestic cleaning side of the business and investing more in securing commercial contracts because the margins are bigger. Then I’d talk him through my recently launched product

range, which generates margins of between 60 and 80% profit. Both aspects of my business are very much scaleable and I’ll be able to convince him of this!” Your product range sounds like it has legs then? “Most definitely. We’ve just launched the Rhubarb Collection. This is the first of our personalised letterbox size home comfort gifting range and it includes rhubarb home mist and rhubarb handwash, plus it comes with a poem written by myself, which I hope inspires others.” You must have a busy January with lots going on? “Yes indeed. I’ve been asked to speak at various functions and will also be mentoring and coaching individuals who have contacted me for some inspiration. I’m passionate about helping others starting up businesses or initiatives while they find themselves in the same circumstances I was in. Needless to say I’m still looking for investment to scale up my business, so that’s something I’m exploring further and I’m keen to hear from anyone who’s interested! I’m really grateful for the support I’ve had while on the show, I feel that everyone in Peterborough has got behind me and it means the world, so thank you to all of you.”

Food Glori us Food If you hadn’t heard it’s Veganuary – the month when we’re all encouraged to try a vegan diet for the month. So if you fancy trying this out how hard will it be? Well it seems our dining out scene in Peterborough has seen a real rise in the number of vegan and vegetarian options out there so maybe it’s not as hard as you might think! Our vegan friends tell us there are some good vegan options at The Queens Head pub in the city centre, Weatherspoons’ vegan curry is lush and good value and they also offer a vegan breakfast, plus The Good Stuff on Cowgate are also a good vegan choice. Turtle Bay also offers a large selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes on a separate menu which we hear are very nice! The team from Resist! Vegan Kitchen get rave reviews for their creative dishes and run regular pop-ups and events at The Ostrich in Peterborough. Check them out on Facebook @resistvegankitchen. We also have our first vegan restaurant in the city with When Polly Met Fergie and more and more local pubs and restaurants are offering us a wider choice so we’ve rounded up a few here.

Peterborough Vegetarian and Vegan Group Foodshare

Peterborough has an active Vegetarian and Vegan Group so we caught up with Paul Benton from the group to see what they have coming up. Paul told ESP he feels there’s been a real shift towards eating differently: "The overwhelming success of our recent Thrive Vegan Festival shows veganism is

certainly on the up in the Peterborough region. We were also happy to see many non-vegans at the event and hope that Veganuary helps many of those making the transition. Veganuary is an amazing initiative and we have plans to help those taking part in next year's initiative.” Coming up is a vegan foodshare event on Wednesday January 16 which is open to everyone and should be a great opportunity to try out some vegan food at Soul Happy in the city centre at 7pm. You can even bring a vegan-friendly dish of your own to share if you are confident – there will be a room full of friendly faces to welcome you. The Peterborough Animal Rights group has a food share at the same venue on January 2 with lots of food available but of course also lots of chat about getting involved in the animal rights movement as well. Paul added – “With the Thrive Festival, Be Kind's vegan stall in the city market, the opening of When Polly Met Fergie Vegan Restaurant and Resist Vegan Kitchen's Pop-Up vegan street food there are now plenty of wonderful dishes for vegans, those transitioning or just curious in this wonderful city." Find out more on their Facebook page @PeterboroughVeg.

A Five Star Veganuary for When Polly Me t Fergie Peterborough’s first vegan restaurant When Polly Met Fergie has recently received its 5 star food hygiene rating and is rapidly making a mark on the city’s dining out scene. If you haven’t already given it a try then Veganuary is the perfect excuse! The restaurant and jazz bar in Westgate Arcade is already well known for its fantastic cocktails and for bringing some top class jazz acts to perform regularly as well as its diverse vegan menu. coffee through to a range of vegan burgers and dishes such as a lentil dhal (which we can highly recommend), this restaurant continues to develop and surprise. Downstairs is the main restaurant with the shabby chic designed cocktail and music area upstairs stretching across the top of Westgate Arcade. Owners Alistair (also head chef) and partner Paula are as passionate about the atmosphere and entertainment as they are their food and seem to be attracting a range of diners, not just committed vegans, all willing

to try a different dining experience. They opened this revolutionary plant based café/restaurant back in September, inspired by their own lifestyle change to become vegan. Alistair has always worked in kitchens including being London based at Aldo Zilli & Le Gavroche so he knows his stuff about creating exciting food. Oh, and if you’re wondering, the restaurant’s named after their two hounds! www.whenpollymetfergie.co.uk

New Year, new dining experience @ the Marriott What can we expect from the new menu? “The Cast Iron Bar & Grill is a contemporary menu with a varied choice for every diner. From classics like fish and chips to steaks on the grill. Recipes are there which enhance the presentation and the look and feel of the dish.” Have there been any other changes diners would notice? “Our menu changes every six months for the Cast Iron and Brew Bar, with an additional choice of a 3 course menu which changes every two months.” It’s been all change in the kitchen and restaurant at the Marriott hotel in Peterborough in recent months with new menus and a new team. So we dropped in to the Lynchwood hotel to meet new head chef Vipin (Seth) to check out the changes…

What is your background and when did you join the hotel? “I was born in India and I have been in the UK since 2003. I have worked in restaurants and hotels including a 5 star boutique hotel back home. “I joined the Peterborough Marriott in September 2018 however I have been with Marriott since 2006 and this is my fifth property with the company.”

Vegan Options @ City Market The food court area at Peterborough City Market has really evolved this year and now offers plenty of choice so it’s no surprise there’s now a completely vegan stall there called Be Kind Kitchen which started at the market in November. Angel, who’s the founder/one-man band at Be Kind, has been sharing her ideas with other stall holders, meaning that several of the dishes at Siam Thai are vegan and Dan at ZeroZero Pizzas makes vegan garlic bread/dough for Angel's stall (and we’re told it's fab). Vikki at Victoria's Little Kitchen also makes some vegan cakes and Embe serve vegan wraps and rice. On Angel’s Facebook site (www.facebook.com/ bekindkitchenvegan) you can pre-order food such as Heavenly Chocolates, vegan salmon, ‘viltong’ (vegetarian biltong Angel is from South Africa) and 'vastrami'. Angel's stall is almost 100% zero-waste, and there are discounts for anyone who takes their own containers. You can also buy herbs and spices by the teaspoon or tablespoon.

Do you have a signature dish? “Yes I like to do fusion in my cooking style – combining different ingredients for different cuisines to create a dish is what I enjoy most.”

50% Off at Loch Fyne

What do you hope diners will now take from their experience at the hotel? “I want diners to try our Cast Iron menu which has a lot of different options available to suit every individual. Also ask for our 3 course menu which is available every day at the hotel. Also if there is something a guest wants to eat differently then we can look to cater for their specific needs.”

The January sales don’t just apply to retailers – Loch Fyne is also slashing prices so we can all dine out on something different to turkey! If you’ve had your fill of cranberry sauce and Brussels sprouts and fancy some delicious fish dishes to refresh your palette this restaurant at Elton always delivers. If money’s tight after the festivities this great offer of 50% off a la carte food throughout January should mean you can still enjoy dining out even after you’ve been to the sales. It’s not just fish at Loch Fyne though, they also serve delicious steaks and vegetarian options too. Give them a call for more details and to book on 01832 280298.

What is your style of cooking? “Modern British, pan Asian, Indian and a bit of French too. I absolutely love food.” What changes have you made dining wise at the hotel? “We run two menus for Cast Iron Bar & Grill and the Brew Bar which is more inclined towards bar style food.”

Time for Change Inspiring ideas for 2019 It’s a new start – what will you change in your life this year?

Maybe it’s time to look at some of the things that hold you back in life so you can make 2019 the year you’d really like it to be. Whether it’s fear and anxieties that hold your back, self image ESP asked a couple of local experts to give us their thoughts on a little self improvement….

Time for Change

CHANGE...

1

...the way you look for self improvement

Sue Donnelly is a Spalding based International Award Winning Image Coach and the only UK Master of Fashion Feng Shui. For most of us, January is a dark, bleak time of the year. New Year Resolutions, and the ‘giving up’ of perceived pleasures, immediately translates as ‘hardship’, adding to the depression. For the past few years, I’ve given up with NYR’s. Instead, I’ve chosen a WORD. A word that will be at the forefront of my mind in everything I do for the next 12 months. I take my time choosing it because it needs to resonate ‘pleasure’ or at least ‘satisfaction’ on some level. Last year I chose STRONG. I decided initially that this applied solely to my physicality, my body, my ability to lift and carry, as I had suffered from a debilitating shoulder injury over the previous 2 years. However, I realised very quickly that it applied equally to other areas of my life. •

The right to say “no”, if I didn’t want to do something

To wear clothing that supported a stronger image, and to not worry about what others might think or say about my choices

To make decisions that came from a place of strength not weakness

To surround myself with people who were ‘radiators’ not ‘drains’

To do things on my own, with no requirement for others to keep me company

To spend money wisely by seeking out activities and experiences that fulfilled me rather than adding more material possessions to my life. This also included ‘shopping’ in my own wardrobe to find new and exciting combinations of existing garments

Of course, a word on its own is powerless. Action, preferably enjoyable, is mandatory. I joined a gym for the first time in my life and discovered I loved weight training. It added balance to my existing yoga practice. I became curious about what I could achieve so I signed up for Aerial Fitness. This is THE school elephant, we’re talking about here, but I’m slowly changing into something more reminiscent of a gazelle, albeit a pretty old one. I decided to have no attachment to the outcome, so failure is not an option, but curiosity is. It’s very liberating when you apply STRONG, rather than judgment, to anything new. My clothing instinctively became simpler, more stylish and understated, less colourful but more aesthetically pleasing. I could play with the different garments to create new looks very easily. My Malaysian clients call it ‘Zen’ and they love it on me. From this, I have now created a new Instagram called Mindfuldresser and it has changed how I look at and train image to my peers. STRONG has served me well this year and I will choose something equally as empowering for the years to come. I’m contemplating COMPASSION for 2019. The world could do with a massive dose, so if my small contribution makes a difference, I’ll be very happy indeed. Maybe this is something you can also do? Perhaps you want to evoke beauty, inspire joyfulness, increase your vitality, become curious or more adventurous, nurture and soothe your soul, get organised, or upscale and refine your life adding a sense of quality. Whatever you decide upon put a positive spin on it. The mind always prefers something positive to work with and there’s a better chance of succeeding if you believe you are going to love the process as well as the outcome. www.suedonnelly.com Instagram @mindfuldresser 24 www.espmag.co.uk

...the way you handle fear and anxiety

Austen Moore is a Peterborough based NLP Practitioner, Life & Business Coach and also operates Digital Marketing Company Signpost Media Ltd. We asked if you can overcome the fears and anxiety that might be holding you back? We've all experienced some level of fear and anxiety at some time in our lives and some of us experience it more often and at a higher level than others. Is fear irrational? Irrational basically means an inadequate use of reason. But is all fear irrational? I would certainly say no it isn't. A level of fear is pre-programmed in us and has been since the dawn of time and luckily it’s hardwired into most animals. If it weren't, then I'd be able to walk out of the door and pick a squirrel off the tree like an orange. So, fear is part of our makeup and we need it to stay alive by not picking up snakes or crossing the road with our eyes shut. Thousands of years ago, the constant dangers around us were far more serious in our lives. These dangers have drastically reduced, but our brains haven't caught up with these developments. Also, some of us have greater levels of fear and anxiety which have even been worsened during our childhood experiences. Most of us don't like being told the fear is irrational in the first place. We tend to bulk the word irrational with words like mad or crazy. So, when someone tells you your fear is irrational it isn't usually very helpful as you probably feel like they’ve just told you you're mad which feels insulting and makes you feel belittled and not understood. In fact, some of us with a fear already feel it’s irrational, but that hasn't made the slightest bit of difference. When I see a giant house spider racing out from under the sofa, I know it's not out to get me, it’s just making a run for cover or going about its business. I know all this, that’s rational, but I still begin looking around nervously for all his or her friends that are hiding somewhere ready to pounce. Some level of fear is helpful, it can save our lives. Some fear is irrational, but most of us know this so pointing that out is useless and can be insulting.

Can we overcome our fears? If a person says, "can I get control of my life?" You may ask them, "Would you like to?" I say this for two reasons: 1. You have to see it as a choice. If you continue thinking that it’s out of your control, then it's impossible to change it. 2. Do you want to? Once you realise it's a choice to take control and you agree you want to do so, you then take the next steps.

Time for Change

TRY A NEW CHALLENGE

CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE AND TAKE UP SOMETHING NEW!

Should you Face your Fears? My advice is this – Don't take huge leaps in facing fears, it can set you back even further. What if I decided to face my fear and went straight in to grab that huge spider? If it goes wrong all my fears will have become justified in my own opinion and I may be even more scared than I was before. So, face a fear in small steps not great leaps. The goal is to overcome a fear not to overcome a fear in the fastest time possible, it’s not a race. If you've had a fear all your life, then I'm sure you can take a few days, weeks even months to overcome it. More if needed. Just maintain progress in the right direction. Start small and work your way there slowly. If there are others that share the same fear, then overcome it as a group. When you do things with others you all share everyone’s successes and this support drives all of you forward. www.austenmoore.com www.signpostmedia.co.uk

So fellas… you’ve been singing in the shower, belting out a few tunes in the car on the morning commute or you’re always first on the karaoke. If you feel the need to liven up your social life and learn a new skill, why not make this the year you learn to sing? The hugely successful project, Men United in Song is back for 2019, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. This has seen hundreds of local men with zero singing experience become part of the city’s successful male choir – so don’t write yourself off guys! In March they’ll be looking to sign up a minimum of 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset on Saturday May 11. Don’t think it’s for you? “I wanted to improve my singing and Men United in Song seemed like a great opportunity!” says Adam from Thorney. “Turning up for the first rehearsal was daunting, but I immediately felt comfortable singing in such a relaxed environment. The highlight for me was knowing that we were creating something amazing for such a great cause. I've met all sorts of people, from farmers to accountants to new dads - without this project we would never have had the chance to meet and discover how we can really sing. I would highly recommend the experience!” Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising, there’s a fantastic social scene, too! Ultimately, it’s about a group

of men getting together in a shared enterprise, which of course is the idea behind Prostate Cancer UK’s Men United campaign, and why the charity seemed such a good fit for the project.

Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get involved and give it your best shot!

Men United In Song kicks off with introduction sessions on February 27 and 28 and March 2 at the John Mansfield Campus in Peterborough. Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get involved and give it your best shot! “We’re not looking for 100 percent in musicality, but 100 percent in enthusiasm,” says William Prideaux, director of Men United in Song. “Why not give it a go, it just might be the best thing you’ve done in a very long time!” Rehearsals will be on Wednesday evenings from 7.45pm-9.45pm at the John Mansfield Campus, Western Avenue, Peterborough. Go on… step out of your comfort zone and find your voice this year! For further information contact Jo on 01733 425194 or email menunited@ peterboroughsings.org.uk.

...the way you get fit

Tom Fletcher, manager at Anytime Fitness in Orton looks at why your healthy resolutions might not stick… Welcome to the New Year! Are you as excited as I am? Based on statistics, almost 50% of people will have abandoned or forgotten about their resolution by the end of the first week. In a few more weeks, half of the rest will have forgotten about their goals. So, what is the reason those resolutions haven’t stuck? A resolution is a desire to assure that you attain any goal, you have to have a plan, which requires daily structure. All Anytime Fitness members have exclusive access to a state-of-the-art Work Out App that can easily track, analyse and challenge fitness goals. With thousands of pre-loaded workouts, you have your very own ‘in pocket personal trainer’ to lead you through your sessions! This alongside our experienced instructors tailored ‘Get Started Plan’ will ensure that you stick and complete your New Years goals. With 24 hour access seven days a week, a mix of state-of-the-art cardio equipment, fixed resistance machines, a free weight area and functional training equipment including a multipurpose rig, we have equipment for every aspect of your training.

Mike Jarvis from Slimming World looks at ways to help you stick to your weight loss goals… Traditionally at this time of year we make resolutions and often one of those is to lose weight and get healthy. So what stops us seeing this particular one through? Is it the thought of another diet, missing out on our favourite food and drink, feeling deprived and thinking we can never go out socialising ever again? The good news is… at Slimming World our generous eating plan makes slimming easier than you ever thought possible! Instead of telling you what you can and can't eat, Food Optimising puts you in control. You don't need to worry about weighing all your food, counting points or monitoring every mouthful. In fact we can guarantee you freedom from hunger because our Free Food list includes masses of food you can eat in unlimited amounts. Nothing's off limits! Enjoy your favourite treats every day and still lose weight. Slimming World's highly effective approach to weight loss is empowering and enabling. Because all our consultants have been on their own weight loss journey they understand and you can be reassured that there is no humiliation, just support and motivation to ensure your success. ...New year, new business The age old saying, ‘new year, new you’ rings true as entrepreneurs are more likely to start a business in January more than any other month. With record numbers expected to register their new business ideas in January 2019, entrepreneurs continue to make ‘building a business’ their New Year’s resolution. The Additional Services – As well as a prestigious business address, virtual offices come with a whole host of additional services for your start-up. Many packages offer professional mail handling and phone answering and free use of meeting rooms, giving you the opportunity to meet clients in a professional, stylish environment. Here at Allia Future Business Centre we have the added bonus of offering regular events, workshops and access to networks that help you grow your business. Immense Flexibility – To stay competitive, your start-up needs to be as flexible as it can be. This includes being able to upgrade to a serviced office or have more space to use whenever necessary. Find a virtual office that also offers affordable flexible workspace and serviced office space so you will be able to expand and grow without ever having to move to a new address.

I

Bootstrapping by coworking – To help keep start-up costs low, (known as bootstrapping), the Centre offers shared workspace for entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses. It’s for people who enjoy working for themselves but not always by themselves. You don’t have to worry about investing in furniture or other equipment, in a co-working space, everything is already set, you can just plug in and work.

f you’re thinking of starting a business, or getting your idea off the ground, need support and a fresh approach, then the Allia Future Business Centre is the home of Peterborough’s impact entrepreneurs. The Centre’s run by Allia, not for profit with a social mission, dedicated to helping impact organisations and initiates to grow. The Centre provides flexible workspace and a community for people to create change. Here Sally Bain, Brand, Marketing & Communications Manager explains how you can keep your start-up costs down and how they can support you in the early days... A virtual office – Thanks to digital you really can work from anywhere with smart phones, laptops and free Wi-Fi, but there’s still value to be added by maintaining a professional base, that’s where a virtual office can help. Cost Efficiency – Nothing beats having a virtual office when it comes to cost efficiency, (well, nothing except starting in your garden shed or home office of course!). It bridges the gap between home based working and professional premises. Professional Business Address – Image is everything in today’s competitive market. You need to maintain a strong brand and image to attract customers and investors alike. The best part is, by having a virtual office you benefit from the prestige of a business address, at a fraction of the costs associated with serviced offices! You can work how and when you want – but with the benefits of a city business centre as and when you need it.

The most exciting thing about a new year is that you can if you want to start afresh; we make and sometimes break resolutions to ourselves. Let this year be your year to actively and effectively change for the better. Whether you want to go down a new avenue in business, sell a new product, make a robust decision on what you’re actually doing in business, this needs to be supported by the all-important marketing plan. As British people we are naturally very humble and don’t like to draw too much attention to our victories but we must for our own mental health and attitude. Now is the time of year when you make resolutions about how you are going to improve your life in 2019. As well as getting fitter or going on a diet, one of the most popular resolutions is improving your qualifications to help kickstart your career prospects. In order to apply for that dream job, nowadays you probably need to have a degree. Or to progress in your current job you’ll need better qualifications to get a promotion. Choosing somewhere local to study, like University Centre Peterborough means that you can fit your studies around your

family or work commitments, or if you have no commitments you can fit opportunities like work placements and volunteering around your lectures and seminars. UCP conveniently structure their timetables for the majority of courses so you only have to attend two full days a week, which makes it perfect for managing your own time and fitting in extra time for independent study. There are a wide range of degrees to choose from and the courses are designed by working with local employers to match the skills required to ensure graduates are ready for the workplace. At the moment, some of the most popular degrees at University Centre Peterborough are Forensic Investigation, Criminology and Sports Science. There are many brand new degrees launched for 2019

including Digital Arts, Digital Marketing and five new Business Management options. In addition to these, there are courses in Computing, English Literature, Engineering, Journalism and even Archaeology. With so much to choose from, they’re bound to have a course to suit you. If you’re looking to start a

degree in September 2019, then you need to plan ahead and get your application in early to guarantee your place (the first UCAS deadline for applications is January 15). This also allows you adequate time to get your student finances sorted – plus by studying at UCP you’ll save a lot as they have lower fees and offer generous cash bursaries.

STOP THE PRESS – if you are looking to study a degree in Computing, then you can start this degree at the end of January 2019 with options to study full-time or part-time.

900 CHALLENGE Time to get your workmates together and put you brawn and brains to the test in the Skanska 900 Challenge – are you up for it?

O

K the office parties are over and it’s back to the grindstone – what you need is a challenge to get you fired up for 2019! Here’s just the thing to blow away those Christmas cobwebs and get you and your workmates fired up… so have you go what it takes?! Local businesses are being invited to put their fittest and their brightest staff members up against a team from Skanska in ‘The 900 Challenge’ this January in aid of YMCA Trinity Group. Held in the Lifestyle Fitness gym at Peterborough Regional College on Saturday January 26, the charity event will raise money to provide a new mental wellbeing mobile app, Feel Stress Free, for secondary school pupils across the city. The 900 Challenge charity event is the brainchild of Skanska, in support of its corporate charity partner, YMCA Trinity Group. Skanska is challenging Peterborough businesses in an exciting, activity filled day, where both brawn and brains will be put to the test.

The fundraising event will include a series of challenges involving physical, mental and skill tests, all earning ‘miles’ toward each team’s target of 900 miles. Rod Allerton, Director of Development at YMCA Trinity Group commented: “We’re immensely grateful to Skanska for initiating this fundraising event and to Peterborough Regional College for sponsoring it and making their gym available for the day. Mental health is in a huge crisis amongst our young people – we know that three young people in every classroom suffer from a diagnosed mental health condition.” Rod continued: “We’re committed to supporting our young people, and the Feel Stress Free app detects, prevents and treats many low level mental health conditions. We urge local businesses to take on the challenge and help us fundraise for this worthy cause.” John Birkenhead, contract manager at Skanska added: “The 900 Challenge is our way of supporting a potentially life-changing project for young people in Peterborough. Mental health is such an important topic that we need to address. The more local businesses that join us in this fun and challenging event, the more support we can provide to the city’s young people through the use of Feel Stress Free!” The event runs from 10am - 4pm and costs £20 per person plus a donation and includes refreshments. So get your workmates together, plan your strategy over the biscuit break and get signed up quick! It’s a maximum of six participants in a team. Acclaimed director M Night Shyamalan brings together two of his more noteworthy works – to complete an unexpected trilogy. He meshes elements from both his second film Unbreakable, with his return-to-form hit Split from two years ago, which sees security guard David Dunn (Bruce Willis) pursuing Kevin Wendell Crumb’s (James McAvoy) superhuman persona of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy

WELCOME TO MARWEN

THE FAVOURITE

Steve Carell headlines this inspirational based-on-true-events comedy-drama – from Oscarwinning Forrest Gump director Rob Zemeckis – that encapsulates the life of the victim of a violent five-man assault who admitted to enjoying cross-dressing. With little to no memory of his previous adult life, he attempts to regain his memories by constructing a miniature World War II village, called Marwen, to help aid his recovery.

This multi Golden Globenominated period piece, sees Rachel Weisz’s Lady Sarah govern the country at the behest of her close friend, a frail Queen Anne (British TV favourite Olivia Colman), who still occupies the throne in early 18th century England. But when Emma Stone’s new servant Abigail arrives – who sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots – her charm endears her to Sarah, in this comedy-tinted drama.

MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS

BEAUTIFUL BOY

After marrying a successful Parisian writer (Dominic West), Keira Knightley’s Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette is catapulted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendour of the capital at the turn of the 20th century. But when her husband convinces her to ‘ghost write’ novels for him, but release them under his name, they become phenomenal best-sellers – but she has to fight for recognition of her work.

This historical drama explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Lady Bird Oscarnominee Saoirse Ronan) – who became Queen of France aged 16 and widowed at 18. She defies pressure to remarry and instead returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne, but then sets her eyes on the crown held by her cousin Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie) – which leads to a battle that changed the course of history.

Highly-regarded rising star Timothee Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) stars alongside workaholic actor Steve Carell (who stars in three films across these very pages) in this movie based on the best-selling memoirs of father and son David and Nic Sheff, who they portray. It chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experiences of survival, relapse and recovery, through the eyes of a family coping with addiction over many years.

STAN & OLLIE

THE MULE

A DOG'S WAY HOME

DESTROYER

VICE

The story of the world’s most famous comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy, comes alive in this comedydrama biopic. British comedic stalwart Steve Coogan stars as Stan Laurel, the clumsy and childlike friend of the pompous bully Oliver Hardy (played by Golden Globenominee John C Reilly), as this chronicles the highs and lows of their slapstick careers – and particularly the time they attempted to reignite their fame and fortune with a gruelling theatre tour of post-war Britain.

Oscar-winner Clint Eastwood pulls double-duty by combining directing and acting for the first time in ten years – the last time being 2008’s Gran Torino. It’s actually his first lead acting role for nearly seven years – since baseball flick Trouble with the Curve – starring as a 90-year-old horticulturist and World War II veteran, who transports cocaine through the States for a Mexican drug cartel. Based on true events, this crime-drama co-stars Bradley Cooper and Michael Pena.

You can’t beat a potential doginspired tear-jerker, and this year’s offering comes in the form of a Bryce Dallas Howard-voiced (Jurassic World) canine called Bella. She is the pet mainstay of owner (Jonah Hauer-King) and his Mum (Ashley Judd), but when Bella inadvertently goes missing and is unwittingly driven to a mountainous region far from home, she goes through a multitude of harsh scenarios to try and find her way back to civilisation in this family adventure.

Nicole Kidman has picked up a Golden Globe nomination for this almost facially unrecognisable performance as a former LAPD detective. She stars as Erin Bell, who as a young cop was placed undercover with a gang in the Californian desert – which ended with tragic results. But when the leader of the gang re-emerges years later, she must work her way through the remaining members to try and exorcise the demons that destroyed her past. Sebastian ‘Winter Soldier’ Stan co-stars.

A major awards-season frontrunner – after notching an impressive six Golden Globe nominations – is this story of Dick Cheney, who wielded immense power as Vice President to George W Bush by wreaking political havoc across America and the globe. Oscar-winner Christian Bale has added a few pounds to play the lead in this biographical drama from the director of The Big Short, which boasts a top-notch A-list cast that includes Amy Adams, Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell.

RED DEAD REDEMPTION II (X1/PS4) After taking my time to review this highly-acclaimed title by giving it a good playthrough to see if there were any flaws – there wasn’t. It’s simply a masterpiece. The only gamers that will find fault in it are the COD generation who need to get into their first-person shooters with immediate high-octane running n’ gunning. They need not apply as this is a cinematic marvel that unfolds like a movie – and requires a more mature gamer with patience. Those who do will get plenty of bang for their buck in this open world adventure set in 1899 America. The end of the Wild West era has begun as lawmen hunt down the last remaining outlaw gangs. When a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, you star as gunslinger Arthur Morgan, who’s forced to flee with his Van der Linde gang – and you must fight your way across breathtaking landscapes via a rugged heartland in order to survive. Through a wealth of options in Rockstar’s – the makers of Grand Theft Auto V – deepest and most complex world ever-created, RDR II is undoubtedly one of the greatest games of all-time – and an absolute pleasure to play on multiple levels. With an enthralling story, words like ‘spectacular’ and ‘unprecedented’ seamlessly accompany this watermark portrait of the Wild West – which has redefined what we expect from the genre from now on. It’s as simple as that.

From ballet to jazz, hip hop to Bollywood, the show’s open to anyone. Expect dramatic auditions, incredible challenges and remarkable live performances as dancers swing, swirl and sashay onto the stage each week in the hope of being named The Greatest Dancer. Searching for The Greatest Dancer will be the three Dance Captains, who have a wealth of experience in dance and performance. These celebs include the multiplatinum-selling singer Cheryl, Broadway and Glee star Matthew Morrison and Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse. Cheryl, who’s scored nine No.1 singles in her career to date and is an experienced dancer and performer, explained – “I’m so excited to be part of The Greatest Dancer! I’m looking for acts with real passion, who are going to push boundaries and give it their all, no matter what challenges are thrown at them. From my own dance

background, I know the dedication and commitment dancing takes, I can’t wait to get started.” Matthew, the Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Broadway legend added, “This is such a powerful moment for me. It’s wonderful to continue bringing music and dance into peoples’ lives like we did on Glee. Dance is a safe haven that allows us to communicate where words cannot. It’s an expression of love and empowerment, driven by all the emotions that make us human.” He continued, “I love being

exposed to people who are pursuing art, and expression, and I look forward to being a moving force for good on their journey. As a Dance Captain, my sincere hope is that I can uplift and encourage all the dancers here reach their greatness.”

Of course we’ve all been glued to Strictly over recent weeks so it’ll be great to have one of the show’s pro dancers, Oti Mabuse, back on our screens. “I’m looking forward to finding a dancer who can elicit emotion from the audience, I know how it feels to be on the other side and to be judged and critiqued for your dance or choreography,” said Oti, the star of Strictly Come Dancing, eight-time Latin American champion and more impressively – the featured celeb on the cover of this issue of ESP Magazine! “I’m looking forward to being able to find amazing new talent and help them unlock their greatest potential to become the best dancers they can be, and win the competition. I can’t explain how excited I am to be a part of this show.” The brand new dance talent show for BBC One Saturday nights is hosted by singer and presenter Alesha Dixon and Jordan Banjo, a member of multi-award winning dance troupe Diversity. Here at ESP we can’t wait! If you know anyone local going on the show, be sure to let us know. Mikey Clarke

The ESP team love a good dance show on the tele. Programmes such as So You Think You Can Dance and Strictly Come Dancing are hot topics in our office. It also helps that we often see local talent (such as Louis Smith, Aston Merrygold and Lauren Steadman) appear on them. Perhaps we’ll see some more locals pirouette their way onto the new show coming to the BBC.

health and beauty ESP’s Rachael Church has all the latest health and beauty news…

rachael.church@espmag.co.uk

What’s hot for 2019 You heard it here first, what’s new in the health and beauty world for 2019! ESP has one ear on the grapevine...

food for your hair We don’t mean literally obviously! But superfood ingredients are now in so many skincare products, it was just a matter of time before it hit haircare too. As we all become more aware of what we eat, drink, or use for beauty purposes, interest in natural and food-based ingredients is rising as well. One food-inspired haircare launch that created a splash in 2018 was Briogeo's Be Gentle, Be Kind range, formulated with 'superfood-infused cleansers’. Watch this space for even more in 2019!

less is more Photos: Mike Harris

A bit of a backlash perhaps against the ‘search for perfection’. The makeup world predicts that we will all now be searching for that ‘just back from my facial at the salon’ look. Rosy cheeks, nude lips, natural beauty! That’s the way forward for 2019. Less is definitely more.

toni & guy Party night

headbands Well you heard it here first. Dig out your old headband you wore at school back in the 90’s (if you’re me anyway!) Hair accessories have been a growing trend over a few years now – from clips to clasps, bows to barrettes. And headbands have been seen recently all over the catwalk, showcased by big name brands like Dior. A definite H&B trend for the New Year.

A few weeks ago, there was a party going on in a usually quiet corner of Long Causeway. I popped along to see what celebration the DJ, smoke machines, and cupcakes were all part of. I was greeted by an array of ‘jungle themed’ colours at the Toni & Guy salon.

T

he team and loyal customers were all celebrating the franchise being taken over by a familiar face, Magda, who has worked there for over 2 years. Magda came to hairdressing late, at 25 years old – a far cry from her previous degree – she has a Masters in Finance and Banking! But I only spoke to Magda for a few minutes to see the passion she has for hairdressing, and the Toni and Guy brand. Magda says, “I’m so excited about 2019 as the new owner of the salon. Myself and the team know the local area and are here to offer a personalised service to the people of Peterborough.” Everyone who works for T&G goes through a rigorous 6-week training programme when they join, and have further training every October to learn about the new styles and fashions in the pipeline. T&G’s sponsorship of London Fashion Week also means the likes of Magda get trained in the latest fashions straight from the catwalk, which they take back to their local salons and share with customers. Magda added, “We bring the London vibe to our Peterborough clients. It’s not just about the hair for us; it’s about the whole look our clients want to achieve. The T&G brand makes us feel inspired to help our clients achieve their creative goals too.” Why not treat yourself in the New Year and book an appointment with Magda and her team to see how they can inspire you. 36 www.espmag.co.uk

Will you be doing dry January? After the party season ends, Dry January is (literally) on everybody’s lips. Cancer Research UK are one of the biggest advocates of Dry January – and not just because of the obvious benefits to our health. To make sure you stay committed, you can sign up to their ‘dryathlon’ through their website. They estimate that the average person in the UK spends £64 a month on alcohol – so think of the money you could save (and donate to a good cause!) by the end of the month.

Well Being Karen Devine’s

TASTE Some just go off the smell, taste and texture of meat, or have never really enjoyed it but grew up in a family where meat was the dominant food. You often find this is why many are vegetarians first then step into veganism.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Veganuary January’s become known in recent years as Veganuary which encourages people to give up all animal produce for the month. It’s a great time after the amount of meat and dairy that many would have eaten during December. I’ve seen many continue this pathway after January or at least cut back on the amount of animal produce they consume.

In a report in The Guardian newspaper Joseph Poore, at the University of Oxford, UK, who led research into reducing our environmental impact said - “A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use. “It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car,” he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions. The research in that study showed that beef results in up to 105kg of greenhouse gases per 100g of meat, while tofu produces less than 3.5kg (see link below)

There are many reasons for this such as... HEALTH BENEFITS A carefully planned plant-based diet can be extremely nutritious and satisfying. However, some choices can be less than healthy as they’re very high in fats and refined carbohydrates, salt and chemical enhancers. I went to a vegan restaurant recently, but I found I needed to drink so much water the next day as the dishes were way too salty, the menu also had too much seiten which is a protein choice for many who can’t take the soya products. It’s fairly tasteless but can absorb flavours easily and have a texture of meat. Seiten does have nutrients, but it’s a very glutenous food and can be extremely difficult to digest. Many foods that look like and have the ‘pretend’ flavour of meat are highly manufactured and full of chemicals and salt – hardly a health food. However, I do feel that many of the vegan processed foods can be used as a transition away from, or to enjoy time off from, meat dominated meals but it’s not a place to stay if you’re seeking optimum health.

A diet rich in leafy greens, fruits, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, sprouts, mushroom, beans, pulses, sea vegetables, small amounts of fermented soy such as tempeh, hemp, coconut, oat and nut milks forms the basis of a healthy plant based diet with all the protein requirements we need if managed correctly. Too much animal protein is acidic, linked to kidney stones, cardiovascular disease, cancer particularly of the bowel, and more. ANIMAL WELFARE This is of course a controversial one and I’d recommend you look into it closely if you’re truly considering going vegan long term (I’ve added some links at the bottom of the page). Most of us are guilty of not really considering where the meat in our Spag Bol comes from or what dairy production really involves, but the treatment of the animals is one of the main reasons some people make this dietary choice.

Many religions advocate veganism – they believe we are all one, and when we take into the body the flesh of an animal, we also carry the information or the energy of that animal especially any suffering it endured. It does make interesting reading for those looking to explore this further. January is not a call for everyone to turn vegan and stay vegan (some do as an energetic shift takes place) but more of an exploration to find ways to enjoy foods from our plant kingdom that can support our health, wellbeing, animal welfare and the environment.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

2019!

It seemed so far away when I was a kid, but here we are, a new year and another transfer window. However, this window doesn’t involve chocolate. It’s been an incredibly busy time at Peterborough United in the last few months and the busy festive period provided no let up. When I spoke to Ivan afterwards, he dedicated his first treble and match ball to his nan and grandad looking down on him from above, which was a wonderful sentiment. Of course, around the festive period, we visited the local children’s ward at the Peterborough City Hospital and put on an open training session and a ‘meet the players’ event at our stadium with kids breaking up for the festive period.

B

efore Christmas, we were part of an extraordinary Emirates FA Cup second round replay at Bradford City where we eventually won on penalty kicks after a 4-4 draw following extra time. Our striker Ivan Toney scored his first ever hat-trick in that game and his first goal was a stunning freekick from the centre circle. It reminded me a lot of David Beckham against Wimbledon all those years ago. However, Ivan’s was better. Posh and Becks have always gone well together.

These community events are vitally important to us as a football club. Our Schools Initiative saw us engage with over 8,500 children at just under 40 Primary Schools. All of the youngsters received a free ticket to watch Posh play with an adult also admitted free of charge. That’s over 17,000 people that had the opportunity to pick one of three Posh matches. We have to keep this going. Our aim is to engage with over 25,000 children by the end of the season.

Of course, while there are many positives, the end of last year was a sad one too as we lost our former owner and chairman Peter Boizot at the age of 89. I know my former colleague at Posh and current ESP columnist Pep Cipriano has written a fitting tribute to the exPizza Express Owner, but I wanted to add my condolences to his friends and family. Although Peter was not someone who I came into direct contact with on many occasions (I left that to Pep back then), he was a very passionate person who wanted to give back to the city that he loved. It is very rare to see that. He was also someone who was determined to bring a bit of razzmatazz to football matches and I recall numerous different bands, marching and otherwise, entertaining fans ahead of kick-off. Fair play, he may have got a little bit of stick, but making the match day a vibrant experience has, and will always be, our aim. January can be a dark month, both literally and figuratively, but there’s plenty to look forward too. Football never stops. Well unless it snows. Then we have a few issues!

Peterborough Arts Cinema New Season You’ve probably guessed by the number of film reviews I do for ESP that I love the cinema. It’s my ‘Happy Place’. There’s nothing better than switching off from life and immersing yourself into another world for a few hours.

O

n numerous occasions I’ll fancy a trip to the Showcase or Cineworld and realise that I’ve pretty much seen everything already… and then I remember we have somewhere else to watch movies. The Peterborough Arts Cinema is an independent cinema run on a non-profit basis by a committed group of volunteers known as the Peterborough Film Society. They’ve been bringing quality cinema to locations across Peterborough for over 70 years – currently located at the John Clare Theatre, at the Central Library. Many of their presentations would have had a limited initial release and therefore they offer the opportunity to see great films on the big screen that won't have been shown in multiplex cinemas. As an example of why you should give the Peterborough Arts Cinema a try, my favourite film of 2016 was Sing Street – which wasn’t released at all at Showcase or Cineworld. Had it not have been for this wonderful place, I’d probably never had seen the film that I now love. What I love most about the Peterborough Arts Cinema is that those that attend often have a greater passion for film – with many heading over to a nearby pub afterwards to discuss what they’d seen. I highly recommend you check it out. They’ve already got some great films lined up for Thursday night this year starting this month. Perhaps I’ll see you there. In the midst of the 1970s civil rights movement, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) becomes the first black detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department. He sets out to prove his worth by infiltrating the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan and convinces his Jewish colleague (Adam Driver) to go undercover as a white supremacist.

Jacques ‘Vincent Lindon’ is a journalist at a large regional newspaper in France. His reputation as an impartial investigator attracts the attention of the Vatican, who recruit him to lead a committee to explore the legitimacy of a saintly apparition in a small French village. Confronted with opposing views from clergy members and skeptics, Jacques finds his belief system profoundly shaken as he works to uncover the hidden motivations and pressures at work.

Maxine Peake gives a formidable performance as an aspiring female comedian standing up to a violent husband and the sexist Northern England club circuit. If you think that modern comedy is still lacking in gender equality, then this tough, streetwise British film shows that it's also made giant strides since the inyour-face chauvinism of working men's clubs in decades past. And yet, ill-treatment by men is something our eponymous heroine is grimly used to, from childhood beatings to an abusive husband.

In A Ciambra, a small Romani community in Calabria, Pio Amato is desperate to grow up fast. At 14, he drinks, smokes and is one of the few to easily slide between the region's factions – the local Italians, the African refugees and his fellow Romani. Pio follows his older brother Cosimo everywhere, learning the necessary skills for life on the streets of their hometown. When Cosimo disappears and things start to go wrong, Pio sets out to prove he's ready to step into his big brother's shoes but soon finds himself faced with an impossible decision that will show if he’s truly ready to become a man.

The ESP Comedy Guide

sarah.slack@espmag.co.uk

Sarah Slack brings us the ESP guide to where the laughs are at this month…

2019 New Year, New Gigs!

For those who have gained an unhealthy amount of weight over Christmas and are struggling with the miserable weather January brings, I’m guessing you may need cheering up at the moment. So to help you have a laugh (but also engage those abdominals and increase those serotonin levels – you’re welcome), here’s my round up of the best comedy gigs coming to Peterborough this year...

Luisa Omielan: Politics for Bitches Luisa had a pretty good year in 2018 after a sellout Fringe show and being named one of BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits. In 2019 she’ll be continuing the momentum by touring her critically acclaimed ‘Politics for Bitches’ show at the Key Theatre in March; however Luisa has no interest in cheap laughs. Her comedy is about the things that matter, from body dysmorphia (her famous thigh gap joke went viral), to male suicide and cancer. Expect both honest and hilarious discussions on public spending, cannabis, high brow concepts... and dick jokes.

Kieran Hodgson: 75 I think I’ve raved about this show enough a few months ago, but 75 is a show that deserves it! Described by the Times as ‘ravishingly entertaining, informative, full of insight and plenty of laughs’, this is a chance to see a fantastic Fringe show right on your doorstep at the Key Theatre. Performing in April, Kieran Hodgson achieved another Best Show nomination at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards last year for this epic and surprising tale of how Britain joined Europe in the first place, making it an absolute must-see for comedy fans and those who love their political satire.

James Acaster: Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999

Sindhu Vee: Sandhog As seen on QI and Have I Got News for You, Sindhu Vee will be embarking on a UK tour this year with her critically acclaimed show Sandhog. Performing at the Key Theatre in March, Sandhog offers witty and hilarious observations on marriage, parenting and her own ageing parents which helped to bag her a Best Newcomer nomination at the 2018 Edinburgh Comedy Awards. This highly anticipated show has also been described by Funny Women UK as ‘way ahead of the curve when it comes to comedy of the intrinsically female kind’. 44 www.espmag.co.uk

A show about how 1999 was the best year of his life, James Acaster will be touring his brand new show at the Cresset this July. After releasing his first book and appearing on the most recent series of Taskmaster, Acaster has an established reputation as one of stand-up’s most original voices. In addition to recording his masterful Netflix collection ‘Repertoire’, Acaster has also achieved a recordbreaking five consecutive nominations for Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.

Jonathan Pie: Fake News Best known as the exasperated news reporter with over 1.2 million Facebook followers, Jonathan Pie has been seen all over the world, with his response to the election of Donald Trump being viewed online more than 150 million times worldwide. Described as ‘brilliant, brave, raw and analytical’ by Ricky Gervais, Jonathan Pie will be performing at the Cresset in November and will be one of the hottest tickets this year – book now for a scathingly satirical and sensational show.

NIGHTlife

Your guide to the nighttime scene

What have been some of the highlights? “My major highlight has to be DJ’ing at the Mark Knight event. I was on before he went on and helped organise the event from start to finish. We’re now good friends an plan on creating something very special this year... a little teaser there lol. “Also another big highlight is my Platinum night where I’m trying to give younger talent the opportunity to gain experience in the industry. Recently local DJ Joe Younger approached me and he’s been playing the warm up for my PRL events and he played on the Mark Knight line up which I know he really enjoyed.”

MIXOLOGY WELCOMES ARCHIE HAMILTON

Q&A WITH ... DJ ALEX VACCA RESIDENT AT THE SOLSTICE When did you first start DJ-ing and what got you into it? “I always had an interest in music from a very early age, I loved listening to all sorts of music growing up. I was lucky enough to go abroad at 18 years-old to go and work on the Greek islands which is where I had access to some amazing nights and DJ equipment, I slowly watched and taught myself to mix on Vinyl & CD’s in the club during the day time. “Moving forward I asked to DJ in the nightclub as a resident and moved forward from there with my DJ career. I’ve played at some amazing venues and I’m currently the resident for both The Solstice in Peterborough and The Modified Nationals Car Show (yearly event).” How long have you been at The Solstice now and how would you describe your nights? “I’ve been at The Solstice just over 3 years now. I took over from Steve Andrews in the amazing Sol Garden on Saturday nights, holding some of the best nights in the city. We’re known for our house music in the Sol Garden on Saturdays and we pride ourselves on continuing this into the future. “Over the past 12 months we’ve brought some of the most amazing artists such as… Camelphat, Sandy Rivera, Sam Divine, Low Steppa and most recently Toolroom legend and boss Mark Knight. I also hold my monthly Platinum Radio London event which gives some great DJs opportunity to play in a club which they may not usually get to play at. “However none of this would’ve been possible without the amazing owners and management in place at The Solstice, Michael and Eileen Boyle, Mary Boyle, Sean Boyle and Peter Bell are the people who’ve supported my decisions and input since the day I started. I’ve always been made to feel at home at The Solstice and the family run ownership can be seen from a mile off. I have been given the responsibility of ensuring we have the correct DJs in place and also event management when it comes to our acts with our marketing team, to which I feel very privileged.”

46 www.espmag.co.uk

The Mixology crew have lined up an absolute belter for their first event of 2019 and are birnging FUSE resident Archie Hamilton to Peterborough! Archie Hamilton, the London based DJ/Producer and three-time label owner, has established himself as one of the scene’s most sought-after artists. Now you can catch him in action live in the city at Red Room on Broadway on Friday February 1. Within a short space of time, Archie’s already garnered accolades from the highest echelons of house and techno, both via his imprints: Moscow Records, Moss Co. and Arkityp and through his own output. Boasting an ever-growing discography Archie’s sound, which nods to UK rave culture’s heyday whilst firmly facing forwards, has found a home on lauded labels like Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels, Be Chosen, Pleasure Zone and FUSE. As a DJ, Archie manages a busy touring schedule, delivering dynamic sets at the best clubs around the world. Among the most notable are his regular appearances at global event brand FUSE, London’s Fabric, Ibiza’s Amnesia and Privilege as well as leading international festivals: Sonus, ADE and Sonar. Warming-up for Archie on the night it’s their trio of talented resident selectors: Tom Skinner, James Chan & Dan Clare (Maur). Maur’s ‘Gospel Man’, the debut release on Mixo’s MXO Records has been garnering support from the likes of Mixmag, Data Transmission, Detlef, Roger Sanchez, David Guetta & DJ SKT and is riding high in the Beatport charts. They also welcome back Lee Haslam after his amazing set at their East End Dubs event and making his debut at Mixo it’s Data Transmission Radio’s Jack Burt.

What sort of crowd do you get? Mixed ages? “Having been at The Solstice for a few years I’ve watched the crowds and how they’ve changed, but one thing we’ve always maintained is the older crowd. The Solstice has always drawn the older crowd from 25 upwards. “We like to look after our customers as much as we can too. We’re currently looking at what we can bring to the city to help itch the younger crowd to come and experience The Solstice in full swing. I think a lot of people are unaware that we are actually a five room venue on Friday and Saturday night with the following… Solstice, Sol Garden, Harry’s, Cargo and Eden all providing an entertainment venue rather than an individual club, for all ages and styles of music.” What can we look forward to over the coming weeks? “We had some amazing nights last year including the World Cup Street Parties, which by any means are going to be hard to beat, but we have a few special projects in the pipeline for this year! You will have to keep your eyes peeled on our social and here in ESP for the info first.” What do you think of the club scene in the city and what more would you like to see? “Ahhh Peterborough’s club scene… where to start, ha ha! I think with DJ’ing in the city for well over 10 years, it has massively changed. I’ve seen venues come and go, the crowds change and where at one point it dwindled down to two venues really, I was unsure on what direction the city was going in. “Recently we’ve seen some refurb’s on existing venues and along with new venues opening in the city that has given it a boost which is a good thing. “We at The Solstice are trying bring some of the UK’s and the world’s best acts to the city as are others too. I think if everyone keeps pushing in that direction and we can entice the crowds to keep coming out then we will improve the clubbing scene once again.”

WILLOUGHBY’S STAMFORD

Photo: Licklist

What are your favourite tracks for filling the dancefloor? “I think being able to pick a specific song to fill a dancefloor is not easy to do as it always depends on your crowd that evening. However if I had to pick something I would say everyone loves a good classic house tune, whether it be the original or just hearing the lyrics in a new remix, something people are familiar with and have memories too.”

Willoughby’s on Broad Street in Stamford gets your party started with Throwback Thursdays playing then best floorfillers for the 90’s and the 00’s. Friday nights it Reload with all the latest dance, chart and pop and latest bangers. VINYL NIGHT Like the old skool sound of the black plastic? Head along to Vinyl Night with Derek Gibson at Charters on the river on Friday January 18. Great tunes played out from 8pm – late and it’s free entry.

Janus Stark Return! Something to look forward to…

Craig David in Concert So if you’re feeling dismal as it’s January and you’re broke and bored cast your mind to the summer and get excited about a major gig coming to Peterborough. If you missed the news (or didn’t get bought tickets for Christmas!) let me remind you that global superstar Craig David and his full live band are heading to the ABAX Stadium on Saturday June 8. It’s great to see the concerts which started at London Road with Elton John and continued with Steps and Blue last summer are gaining momentum and have attracted another big name who should have wide appeal having launched such a successful return to the music scene of late. Some will remember him for his huge hit 7 Days and Walking Away while others will recognise his more recent singles Nothing Like This, Heartline and I Know You. He’ll be joined by international DJ Sigala who’ll be bringing a full live band set, and rising star DJ Nathan Dawe. Craig’s coming here as part of a limited number of concerts across the UK in the summer of 2019 Craig David said, “I’m really looking forward to bringing my show and band to Peterborough in the summer. It’s going to be a blast; I’ve no doubt my fans will join me in making this a big night. I’m a huge fan of Sigala who will be spinning some serious tunes on the decks, and Becky Hill has the most incredible voice, so I’m looking forward to having them both as my very special guests. DJ and producer Nathan Dawe is on the up – and I am happy to invite him to open. We know the fans in Peterborough like to PARTY so bring it on, cannot wait to see you all!” Tickets are available from: www.theposhtickets.com or www.ticketmaster.co.uk. 48 www.espmag.co.uk

Local guitar hero Gizz Butt has been in touch and we were excited to hear his original punk band Janus Stark are back with their first new material in 21 years and a video! Peterborough star Gizz gained fame playing with The Prodigy and remains a regular on the local music circuit with his great covers band The Dizzy Miss Lizzys, but it’s his punk rock he’s known for and it’s great to see Janus Stark return. Janus Stark initially existed between 1996 and 2002 and after a split with their label and a parting of ways with drummer Pinch (current drummer of The Damned), Janus Stark eventually split in 2002. In 2018, however, Gizz decided to reform Janus Stark and asked Richard Gombault (of 90s pop punk trio Midget) to join, along with long standing close friends Fozzy Dixon and Simon Martin. The band’s fronted by Gizz on lead vocals and lead guitar, with Richard Gombault on guitar and vocals, Si Martin on bass and vocals and Fozzy Dixon on drums. The new single Shuffling the Pack is supported by the band’s first ever video. “It’s a tale of promises that lead to betrayal,” vents Gizz. “When someone lays down the red carpet to you and promises the earth, yet before you know it, your honeymoon is over, and you’ve been shuffled to the back of the pack. “Personally, I’ve been at the receiving end of a ‘promisor’ a number of times, fooled by the proverbial dangly carrot. A few friends of mine helped me recognise the signs. The video represents a promise that I am intended to follow. This time I suspect something, so I’m going to confront this villain. This time he’s chosen the wrong card!” It’s exciting times for Gizz and the band as they’re playing a Camden Rocks all dayer in Camden at The Monarch on January 12

promoted by the folks behind the massive Camden Rocks festival which takes place in July. Janus Stark are organising a coach trip so if you’d like to go along or want to get your name on Janus Stark's cheap/£5 guest list then send them a text on 07770 846153 or contact them on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/JanusStarkBand/ They’ll be appearing with Spreading The Disease, Derange, The Dead XIII,Cohesion, Enterfire, Nine Miles South, Our City Fires and Nobody Wins live at The Monarch as part of a string of 'presents' shows to give you some of the best new alternative, indie, rock & metal music about! Tickets for the event can be purchased here: https://camdenrocks.seetickets.com/ event/camden-rocks-all-dayer-feat-janusstark-more/the-monarch-camden-london/ 1271971. Janus Stark will be heading north in April 19-21 to play the Manchester Punk Festival and then the Punk and Ska Festival Wales on May 25.

Are you Ready to Funk? There’s a new funky functions band on the local scene and they’re set to get their name out there with a special charity gig in aid of Sue Ryder. Callum’s been in touch from Let’s Funk a covers band performing 70's & 80's Funk, Soul, RnB & Disco-Boogie, who told me – “We’re a professional function band in Peterborough and we’ve recently re-launched the band due to line-up changes.” They have their debut gigged book. It's on Friday March 1 at the Parkway Sports and Social Club in Peterborough and already have tickets on sale. Callum told me – “The proceeds of the gig go to Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice as a lot of the band members as well as the Parkway's entertainment manager have had loved ones cared for there, and we all really can't praise the team of staff enough for how much we appreciate everything they do.” The night will also include a 2 hour DJ set on the night, so expect over four hours of solid entertainment from that era for £8 entry. You can find out more about the band on their website – www.letsfunk.band.

WELCOME TO THE NEWLY REFURBISHED COOPERS

Austin Gold to rock the Key Theatre Again It’s fair to say that Peterborough rock band Austin Gold had a pretty amazing year last year and here at ESP we’re big fans. This year they’ve already lined up a return to the Key Theatre with a gig on Saturday August 31. We were there for the last one and it was amazing! Tickets may already have sold out but check in with the box office to see if you’re lucky. The guys are heading into this year as a four-piece as guitarist Jack Cable decided to call time on his involvement with the band in an amicable parting. They’ve seen the release of their album Before Dark Clouds, tracks receiving regular airplay on Planet Rock, toured with Gun and have appeared all over the country but didn’t forget their hometown fans. Austin Gold performed here at the Brewery Tap and gave an incredible acoustic performance in St John’s Church. They’re a truly talented bunch and we have high hopes they could put Peterborough on the map – watch this space and we’ll keep you updated. In the meantime follow them on Facebook for the latest.

Stewart and his team welcomes you to the newly refurbished Coopers with a brand new menu.

Limehouse Lizzy Live If you’re a Thin Lizzy and Phil Lynott fan you can’t beat a bit of Limehouse Lizzy who continue to keep the spirit of the Celtic rock icon alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. I’m pleased to see ‘the boys are back in town’ and they’ll be performing at the Stamford Corn Exchange on Friday January 25 giving fans something to look forward to in what can be a pretty quiet month on the music scene. The band have added another tribute into their show to ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist (and world renowned solo artist) Gary Moore. From their Official PRS award, performing for Virgin Atlantic in Barbados, TV appearances (BBC 2’s ‘Arena’ amongst others), and to actually being recruited to record and tour by members of the original Thin Lizzy, Limehouse Lizzy enter their 25th year with their most explosive show and critically-acclaimed line-up yet. Tickets are £18 from the box office on 01780 766455.

New Open Mic Night @ Coopers It’s always good to see new talent being given the chance to show off their skills and break into the circuit and open mic nights provide the perfect opportunity! I was pleased to see that an out of town venue has added to the local scene with the newly refurbished Bretton pub Coopers staging its first open mic night which launched with Georgia Bunn hosting. It will be a regular event now on the third Wednesday of every month. Keep an eye out for more on their Facebook page or give them a call on 01733 332783 if you’re interested in performing. www.espmag.co.uk
