DEC 1998

JAN 2018

We all feel a little excited when we have a nice fresh and shiny new year stretching out before us and 2018 looks set to be a good one. Since we started out way back in December 1998 with Robbie Williams screaming out of our front cover, so much has changed in the city and ESP has evolved with it. Our local team have always been passionate about the place they live and we’ve aimed to let you know all about all of the good stuff, every month, without fail. So we’re now 19 years-old – yes really – that’s 221 issues in print since we first felt the city deserved its own publication to big up all that Peterborough had to offer! This year lots of organisations in the city will be celebrating various anniversaries. It’s the 20th anniversary of the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival and ESP is proud to be the print media partner for the second year running. The ESP Motley Crew will be taking to the water once again and we’re challenging local teams to take us on! Ferry Meadows celebrates its 40th anniversary, environmental charity PECT celebrates 25 years, the city’s Italian Festival will be the 10th one this year and there are so many more special milestones – and you can count on ESP telling you all about them.

The big one of course is Peterborough Cathedral turning 900 years-old and that’s being marked by the year long Peterborough Celebrates campaign which ESP is a big part of. We love a good natter and there’s so much to tell our thousands of readers about we can never squeeze it all in so don’t forget to check out our lively website where there’s loads more information throughout the month and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the very latest. You can grab your copy of ESP from over 850 outlets in and around Peterborough, Spalding, Stamford, Bourne, the Deepings, Whittlesley, Oundle, Hampton and everywhere in between or read us online on www.espmag.co.uk. Dom Edge has the ESP guide to the best shows around…

Fancy a wacky alternative to the traditional panto? Well, Eastern Angles have the perfect post-Christmas treat. Staged in the Key Theatre Studio from January 23 – 27, the theatre company’s latest show The Ladykillers of Orton Brimbles will be a crazy musical spoof inspired by the famous Ealing Comedy with a few local references thrown in. Eastern Angles have a reputation for producing imaginative and slightly bonkers shows that are always a refreshing antidote to the usual festive fare. They love to poke fun at famous books, films and literary characters setting their stories in deepest East Anglia. In the past popular shows have included Mansfield Park & Ride, a Charles Dickens spoof entitled Round the

Frankie's Guys

Rubber Ring

Bootleg ABBA

I was going to open with a joke about The Smiths, but I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish. Marmite-man Morrissey, the idol of sexually confused, Sheringham resident Jimmy is referenced heavily in this coming of age comedy about our protagonist’s struggles to find himself and his identity. The show opened to rave reviews at The Pleasance Islington before transferring to the West End and a national tour. Coming to the Key Theatre Studios on Friday February 2, the endearing tale is a romp full of belly laughs. Heaven knows you won’t be miserable after. Tickets are £11.50 and available at www.vivacitypeterborough.com.

You don’t need to Take A Chance… on Bootleg Abba. The tribute is quite simply one of the most acclaimed on the circuit since forming in 1998, and has toured across the world and appeared on bills with stars such as Tony Christie and Leo Sayer. When All Is Said and Done there aren’t many tributes closer to the real thing, so spend some Money, Money, Money and catch them on Saturday January 20. Tickets are priced at £17 and are available on 01780 766455.

January may be the month to look forward and think about the coming year, but there are also lots of great reasons to take a walk down memory lane. Frankie’s Guys is one of those. Sweeney Entertainments stamp their charisma on classics such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like A Man and others, whilst adding an authentic and energetic production. It’s bound to be a promising reminder as to why The Four Seasons sold over 100 million records and earnt Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons a place in the rock and roll hall of fame. Get yourself to Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday January 27 for an original spin on this timeless group. Tickets are £20 from 01780 766455.

The Johnny Cash Story If you’re a fan of Johnny Cash and want to see the best tribute in the business look no further than Roger Dean. Since appearing on the BBC at the age of 14, Roger has gone on to tour all over the world, from the West End to cruising radio and beyond. His one man tribute to Johnny Cash has toured

extensively, in which he brings to life his rise from impoverished beginnings in Arkansas to world stardom, as well as singing all of Cash’s hits. The Johnny Cash Story comes to the Key Theatre on Thursday February 1 and tickets are £21.50. Book online at www.vivacitypeterborough.com.

Austen The Musical BBC Radio 2 Golden Olden Nominee Rob Winlow is bringing his musical adaptation of the story of arguably Britain’s greatest author to Stamford Corn Exchange. Austen the Musical explores Jane Austen’s struggles to get her timeless work published, her failed romances and vow to reject the woman’s conventional lifestyle in Georgian England. The show promises joy, despair, heartwrenching moments and above all a fresh, musical production that has seen sell out audiences at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Jane Austen Festival and beyond. The show will take place on Thursday January 25 at both 1.30pm and 7pm. Tickets start at £10 on 01780 766455.

Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Peterborough Arts Cinema

We’ve all got that dark side, and perhaps even more so in January when the Christmas cheer has faded, the resolutions begin to become more difficult and the weather is consistently drab. So why not treat yourself to an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s deliciously dark Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Performing at The Key Theatre on Tuesday January 30 the psychological fantasy of sciencegone-wrong (or right?) incorporates brutality, ethics, mystery and murder. Shroud yourself in the foggy streets of 19th century London and get lost in this gripping and chilling story. Tickets for adults are £17.50 and can be bought at www.vivacity-peterborough.com.

There are few better places to meet this winter than at Peterborough’s hidden gem, the Peterborough Arts Cinema. The year kicks off on Thursday January 4 with The Levelling, a drama detailing the coming together of a family following the death of Clover’s brother, Harry. Clover must return to the family farm to tell her father, who she hasn’t spoken to in years. However, she returns to find a shadow of his former self, forcing her to develop a new understanding after her long absence. January 11 showcases Scribe, a French political drama following Duval and his new role transcribing tapped telephone conversations. He must quickly adjust to the dark underworld of the secret service and its brutal mechanics amidst an enticing plotline.

The French theme is carried over to January 18 when The Red Turtle is aired. A shipwrecked mariner battles for his life in the raging ocean before being washed up on a remote tropical island, surrounded by a gently swaying bamboo forest. The prospect of being whisked away, albeit in more pleasant circumstances, is no doubt entrancing in the midwinter! Lastly Denial airs on January 25, bringing to life the story of Deborah Lipstadt’s historical battle for the truth against David Irving, who she’s charging for libel after being accused of being a Holocaust denier. To find out more about all of the above films, visit www.peterborougharts cinema.co.uk

The Snow Queen You’re never too old to enjoy Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytales, and now Ballet Theatre UK are bringing The Snow Queen to life at The Key Theatre. The production follows Gerda and her quest to find her friend Kay, whom the Snow Queen has placed under an evil spell. Her journey takes her across the frozen north, where she encounters a band of gypsies, enchanted reindeer and a mysterious Lapland woman before her showdown with the Snow

Queen at the Palace of Ice. It may be cold outside but the show is sure to warm your heart with a renowned company of international dancers, spellbinding costumes and spectacular scenery that’ll combine to create an unmissable experience on Thursday January 25. Tickets are £19 for an adult and £13.50 for a child and are available from www.vivacity-peterborough.com.

The Ghost’s Touch It may now be plush and modern, but old fashioned spooky fun returns to the Key Theatre in The Ghost’s Touch on February 5 – 6. Widower Stephen Rayburn’s young daughter returns to him from the woods petrified after encountering a woman, and in doing so entangles them both into a web of lust and revenge from beyond the grave. Produced by the Rumpus Theatre Company and based on Wilkie Collins’ The Woman In White, The Ghost’s Touch promises to be a rollercoaster ride for all those who dare. Tickets are £18 from www.vivacitypeterborough.com.

Peterborough Mask Theatre present Dunsinane There are certainly few better venues in Peterborough for a tale of medieval peacekeeping than Peterborough cathedral’s historic Knight’s Chamber. The Grade I listed building welcomes Peterborough Mask Theatre’s performance of Dunsinane, which follows Siward, Earl of Northumberland and his struggles with keeping the peace during a time of warring clans and the challenges of English occupying forces. Don’t miss this epic tale that will truly transport you back to medieval times. Performances run from January 3 – 6 and again from January 11 – 13. Tickets are £12.50 and available at www.masktheatre.co.uk

Romeo and Juliet Fewer plots need fewer introductions than Romeo and Juliet – a script which is constantly reimagined, reworked and reapplied to modern times. The Bolshoi Ballet have adapted the classic into a ballet, which is broadcasting live from Moscow at the Showcase Cinema on Sunday January 23 at 3pm. For those unfamiliar, the play is set in Verona and depicts the tale of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet and their family’s bitter rivalry, which culminates in the heart-wrenching tragedy of their forbidden love. Bring a packet of tissues for those wet eyes and don’t miss the rare opportunity to witness a Russian ballet broadcast live. Tickets are available at www.showcasecinemas.co.uk www.espmag.co.uk

The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Rest: Stories from a Wartime Tea-Room exhibition

Time to party at the Straw Bear Festival Whittlesey is the epicentre of a huge winter party from January 12-14 when it becomes time to follow the bear once again through the town’s streets. The annual Straw Bear Festival returns with its trademark overflowing pubs, Molly and Morris dancer merriment and numerous fringe events that guarantees enjoyment for all ages. The tradition stems back centuries, when one of the confraternity of the plough dressed as a ‘straw bear’ on the Tuesday following Plough Monday. The festival’s grown from strength to strength since being revived in the 1980’s and is a mainstay in every Fenland calendar. The Friday night concert is a ticketed event which takes place in the Ivy Leaf Club, followed by a Saturday night Barn Dance (also ticketed) at Sir Harry Smith Community College. Sunday sees the burning of the bear, which takes place at the same venue from 12 noon to 2.30pm. There are also plenty of free music events, dance displays and storytelling sessions across the weekend, not forgetting the procession of the bear throughout the town on Saturday which certainly is a sight to behold! It’s safe to say it will be packed and the pubs and streets will be buzzing. The town truly comes alive this weekend, so to ensure you don’t miss out on any remaining tickets visit www.strawbear.org.uk. The website also details road closures in the town. Dom Edge 8

For a rainy day activity that’s also very easy on the wallet, look no further than Peterborough Museum. Vivacity has curated a brand new exhibition opening in January which showcases first-hand stories of soldiers and servicemen from World War One. At the centre of the exhibition are two visitors’ books from Peterborough’s East Station in 19161917 that are brimming with comments, thoughts, poems and drawings from servicemen while they waited for their connecting trains to the front lines. The books, which were lovingly preserved by the Women’s United Total Abstinence Council (WUTAC), who ran a tea-room at the station to keep soldiers away from the pub, have been painstakingly transcribed over the course of hundreds of hours by volunteers. They’ve then been brought to life through audio and video, which guarantees to make the exhibition a poignant experience for anyone who visits. Additionally, following a huge nationwide media appeal, the Vivacity Archive Service has made contact with many families of the servicemen who’ve kindly supplied additional photographs and first-hand stories to further help the hundreds of stories become more immersive. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Rest: Stories from a Wartime Tea-Room runs from January 20 to April 15 and is free to attend, with the exception of advertised special event days. Find out more on www.vivacity-peterborough.com. Dom Edge

Burns Night Supper If you’ve somehow got room left in your belly following December and all its festivities, then allow the cathedral’s Burns Night Supper on January 19 to ensure that it’s filled right back up again! Think bagpipes, whisky, haggis and ‘tipsy laird trifle’ as you raise a toast to traditional Robert Burns recitals only yards from the original burial place of Mary, Queen of Scots. The event boasts pre-supper drinks, a three-course meal and The Royal Scottish Dance Society will perform some traditional Scottish dancing before dessert is served.

Afterwards, if you’re feeling particularly inspired or still able to, you can dance the night away in the ceilidh, which is accompanied by a live band. The night is topped off by a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne before carriages at 11pm. So don that kilt (or black tie if you don’t have one) and prepare for an unforgettable night in an exceptional setting. Tickets are priced at £100 each or £900 for a table of ten and are available at www.shop.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk Dom Edge

Men United In Song 2018: Supporting Prostate Cancer UK Who doesn’t want a new challenge in the new year? Men United returns in 2018, aiming to raise more money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in early February, the project aims to encourage 40 local men with a range of singing experience to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset on Sunday April 14. To date, the project has engaged hundreds of local men, who’ve raised thousands of pounds for the charity. Additionally the buzz of singing together in a choir and the camaraderie that comes with being part of a tight knit group reap huge benefits for those that join in. Call Jo on 01733 425194 to find out more information. Introductory sessions take place on February 1 – 3 at the Key Theatre. Dom Edge

It’s always exciting starting a new year but we’re especially excited about 2018 as the huge Peterborough Celebrates campaign is now officially underway and we’re ready to party.

T

he city’s marking 900 years of our iconic cathedral with a year of special events and it’s hoped everyone will take part. The aim is to raise awareness of not just this amazing building but also to raise the bar for Peterborough itself. It’s hoped we’ll see more people from the city taking part in the events, as well as staging their own with a ‘900’ theme and that the Peterborough Celebrates campaign will attract others from far and wide. We say bring it on! There are lots of ways to get involved and everyone’s coming up with great ideas. There’ll be a Pizza 900 Competition where local primary school children will be asked to draw a Pizza 900 with their favourite toppings on with the best pizzas being served by Papa Luigi at the ever popular Italian Festival with all profits going to the cathedral. PRC will be celebrating the young people of Peterborough with an exhibition which will include an outline of the 900 Years logo as a background shape and grid of 900 squares. Young people will have an image taken and donate £1. This will raise £900 which will be shared equally between Peterborough 900 and the Peterborough Educational Trust. Once again ESP will be the print media partner for the Peterborough Dragon Boat Race in June and this year the event’s celebrating its 20th anniversary. We’re sure it’ll be extra special as part of Peterborough Celebrates and ESP will be supporting even more events throughout the year.

THAT’S THE SPIRIT? Researchers at King's College London say drinking spirits make people feel sexy, angry or morose – but not all at the same time. Did they forget to observe girls on a hen night with cocktails on tap?

Live Music Keith: Be nice to Claire on air on PCRFM, she can’t help it. Claire: If we move to radio cam then your resolution is to find somewhere more appropriate to place your hand throughout the broadcast other than on my thigh…

Happy New Resolutions to ESP Team So, it’s 2018 and all that jazz. For most of us this means laying down some resolutions and sticking to them. To the rest of us it means… “Well, I started with good intentions but…blah, blah, blah.” It’s a struggle to stick to the program and that’s because we’re surrounded by too many distractions and will power is being confused with the name of some guy who reads tarot cards for a living. Knowing some of the ESP team like I do, they’ll be overly ambitious with their New Year pledges, so I thought I’d help out by setting my own easily achievable resolutions for some of them.

CIAOS OUT

Mikey: Remember your next project we talked about? Your resolution is to work me into it and together we’ll make millions. Screen Scene Gavin: We go way back but I haven’t seen you in 67 years. How about your resolution is to buy me coffee next time you’re in town?

And the Winner is... Christmas came early for me when I won the Peterborough Regional PR and Media Awards 'Communicator of the Year' award! Thank you to colleagues and fellow professionals who nominated me. It was great to be recognised and valued for being dedicated to my craft and making a positive contribution to the city.

Rachael: Your New Year resolution is to stop being glam and look rough for a change, just once, thanks. Adventurous Darren: Seriously, can you stop being so active and fit in 2018?! Just for 12 months your resolution is to eat more c*ap and take up flower arranging. Posh Phil: Stop with those cans of Tango and packets of Juicy Fruits. Photographer Mike: It’s now time to let go of the hat, or at least get a new one. You know it makes sense. There you go guys! Be sure to update me on your progress and in the meantime a very Happy New Year to you all and the rest of the crew.

CAUGHT IN THE ACT!

At first, I was dra wn to the shorte I’ve ever seen… But st ESP photograp her on closer window below… is inspection, check out the that a ghost?

Tone – merry birthday! Martin – coffee part two? Pietro – top TV debut Hannah – packet of prawn cocktail next time you’re in… Chris – are you doing the PGER story? All my well-wishers in tough times – thanks. x

OF THE MONTH

WORD

Because it’s January and we all need to go on one, don’t we? Here are reasons not to: Big Mac and fries, three-piece dinner with beans, steak and kidney pie and chips with scraps, Papa Luigi Special with side order of garlic bread and cheese, mint Viennetta (the whole tray), fry-up, Krispy Kreme ‘click & collect a dozen’, large donner kebab with chili sauce and cheesy chips and Waitrose New York cheesecake.

They may not look much like entrepreneurs but trust me this somewhat portly posse of 50-something blokes operated under the name of The Scheme Team back in the 70s, 80s and 1990s. Together, in business, they devised some of the most creative and eyebrow-raising public relations stunts the city’s ever seen. Nowadays, the essence of PR has shifted to being mostly about reputation management, meaning lots of companies forget to include the fun element to good old fashioned publicity. But today’s publicity tool that is social media helped to reunite The Scheme Team. With the exception of the skinny bloke (second left) who photobombed the occasion (please email me if you know this man), these guys gained local, regional and national traction for their businesses by announcing some headline grabbing news stories. They were a copywriter’s dream and local television news gold. The Scheme Team’s relationship with the then Evening Telegraph was so good, the editor would regularly call them asking for ideas they may be working on that would help sell copies of the newspaper. Even with all my experience in marketing and PR today, I’m still unsure as to whether or not the below examples were just pulicity stunts or the real deal. Some of the team’s headline grabbers were: •

Giving a pizza delivery job to an unemployed man who ‘found’ their abandoned van, which was ‘stolen’ on the morning of their first day in business

Letting a scantily-clad kiss-o-gram (remember them?) girl parade through Cathedral Square, kissing men on the cheek to help ‘improve their general wellbeing’

Convincing security at the Radio One road show on the Embankment that the DJ had ordered a 24” pizza. The delivery driver was eventually let on stage and was allowed to plug the business to thousands of revellers

Getting F1 racing officials to agree a one-off race through the streets of Peterborough knowing the city council would never allow it

Lobbying for the then misunderstood nudist community for their rights to sunbathe naked on the Embankment

Organising Walter’s Leap from the town bridge over the River Nene to celebrate the feat that Walter Cornelius was famous for. One of the female competitiors had a Barbara Windsor moment from Carry On Camping…

The Scheme Team are semi-retired now, but I’m reliably informed one of them will be putting all his experience to good use when he makes an announcement later this month that will be “for the good of the city.” We wait with baited breath…

50 Games and £12k Later! It all started in early 2016. An excuse to get his football boots back on. The idea to have a couple of games with friends and raise money for charity at the same time. Well, almost two years and 50 games later, Peterborough guy Marco Sementa’s ‘idea’ has generated £12,000 from the football matches alone and a whopping £40,000 in total from other activities! The oldest player to turn out was 59 and the youngest was 15. More than 480 players laced their boots for Marco and they came from as far as Australia and America too. Marco told me: “It’s been truly astonishing. I’ve had great support from my wife Amy,

friends and family. I have to thank all the local companies who sponsored kits and pitch fees – also the referees who took charge of the games for free. But without the players of course, none of this would have been possible. “Even former Posh stars like Marcus Ebdon played for us and our local boxing champ Cello Renda. Our 50th game was a five-hour marathon with 80 players that raised over £650. It was epic and special mentions to Jake Waller, Tim Lenihen and David Skells who along with me, did the full five hours!” What next for Marco in 2018? Watch this space…

Meet Tyson Fury! Love or loathe him the maverick heavyweight champion that is Tyson Fury is coming to Peterborough and it’s a chance for boxing fans to discover more about the man behind the fighter. Promoter Kevin Sanders will be hosting him for Sunday lunch at Peterborough Rugby Club on March 11 and it’s sure to be the most entertaining roast dinner invititation I’ve ever been to!

Fury pulls no punches outside of the ring and his boxing career to date has been something of a rollercoaster ride. He unified titles and had to vacate them but at only 29 years of age, the best is still to come from the 25 wins and 18 KO puncher. Tickets are already selling fast. Well Being

It’s winter – time to wind down

VITAMN C – not only adding in good levels of vitamin C (best place is from fruits and veggies) to help boost immunity but also to support the glands of stress called our Adrenal Glands. You can of course take a vitamin C supplement if you need a little boost. HOT BATHS – with Epsom salts or good aromatherapy oils. Take your time, have a good soak and use this as down time if this is the only space you have from a busy family or work life.

With another New Year ahead it’s hard to believe that 2017 has already gone, time really does feel like it’s speeding up! WARMING FOODS – nature creates a bounty of root vegetables at this time of year which have more starchy carbohydrate to bring heat/warmth and energy to the body. After the last few weeks many will have gained a few pounds so instead of forcing down cold salads, enjoy roasting up root veggies to sprinkle on any leafy greens.

I

don’t know about you but I love the winter months, everything in nature has a cycle. We are very much part of nature and feel that cycle deep within us too. In our modern fast paced, techno world it can be really difficult to follow and be guided by nature when we have so much that keeps us in fight or flight day to day. Social media has so much to answer for in pushing ourselves out there in the winter, with all the new year, new you messages, goal setting, weight loss, fitness, resolutions etc it can all be added pressure at a time when nature is asking us to slow down.

“Winter time is ideally for rest and regeneration and not going at life 100 miles per hour.” Ginger, chillies, turmeric etc can all give a bit of heat and help blood flow during the colder months. Adding in more root veggies such as swede, parsnips and beetroots can also wean us off all the heavy loading of refined carbohydrates we’ve enjoyed over the past few weeks.

Winter is a time where Mother Nature shuts down, she uses this stillness to build up her energies ready for the newness of the spring season in a couple of months.

REST – sleep more if you can by going to bed early and having a day where you can lie in longer. Or create some extra time to put your feet up with a good book or chill out film. 16 www.espmag.co.uk

MINDFULNESS – why not get into the practice of mindfulness, this can be achieved by listening to a guided meditation, or listening to nature sounds. Or you can light a candle and just keep your attention on the flame. Many find it difficult not to have noise in the background but that is the ego’s way of sabotaging the stillness within. Mindfulness means focusing on the present moment, which can be achieved by focusing on sights and sounds. GOALS AND REFLECTIONS – it’s a good time of year to go within to meditate on our dreams, hopes and wishes for the new year, it can be a time if we allow it, for our dreams and wishes to develop ready to step forward in the spring. That’s not to say don’t set any goals as writing them down is always a good idea.

Of course many of us would love to hibernate as nature does, (I could easily have a duvet season!) but we can still work with these natural cycles which can really benefit our health and wellbeing. We don’t need to push ourselves out there as the spring season will be along very shortly to give us the natural energy to do that. So how can we realistically work with the winter season with our busy lives?

SWITCH OFF GADGETS – take a techno detox and start to pull back from the virtual social media world which can be a huge distraction in our lives. We’re so busy looking at what other people are doing in their life instead of our own, especially those who are pushing the new exercise regimes, or what your big plan is for the new year it can all be too stressful. Giving yourself time to switch off during the evening or a weekend frees up so much more time for enjoying something else.

EXERCISE – enough but not to excess. Don’t go all out to thrash the excess weight off from Christmas too soon, our body doesn’t like the pendulum swing. In a couple of weeks of less of those rich fatty foods, and moderate exercise, sleep, some fresh air and the like you will start to feel normal again.

Winter time is ideally for rest and regeneration and not going at life 100 miles per hour. If you do you are likely to end up with fatigue, immune issues and more during the winter. Spring time is where we naturally bounce back. So be kind to yourself over the next 2 months, get as much rest as you can, work with the winter energies they are there to restore you. Happy New Year, Karen

Food and Fun on a Budget Hopefully you’ve clocked that Peterborough is home to one of the country’s finest cathedrals, and has lots of great waterways to enjoy a walk round. We know everyone’s feeling broke but also desperate to get out of the house! No worries – we’ve put together some ideas of places to enjoy on a budget this January, where a steaming hot chocolate and large slice of cake is only a stone’s-throw away…

Lakeside Kitchen & Bar at Ferry Meadows

Becket’s Tea Room at Peterborough Cathedral The city’s oldest resident turns 900 this year, so what better way to commence the new year than visiting the building that has literally seen it all? Why not try out a free tour, visit the Katharine of Aragon Festival or pop into the recently refurbished Visitor Centre – there’s always so much to choose from! Directly opposite the cathedral stands Becket’s Tea Room. Located in the medieval Becket’s Chapel directly opposite the cathedral, the café serves up excellent hot food, cakes, drinks and much more, and is all prepared by students at the college. What’s more, you can gaze out through the winner of East of England’s ‘Window with a View’. It’s truly one of the city’s best additions in 2017, and there were a lot of contenders. Try a breakfast bap for £2.95, warm up with a homemade soup and crusty roll for £4.50 or toastie or jacket potato for a light lunch… did we mention the cakes?!

Nene Park celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and has seen some amazing improvements over recent years. The kids can enjoy miniature train rides and the great play areas, the Nene Outdoors centre means you can have fun on the water and Rutland Cycling helps you explore the park on two wheels. But even when you’re skint you can just get out in the fresh air and have fun at Ferry Meadows fuelled by some tasty nosh at Lakeside Kitchen & Bar. Serving great food all day you can grab a tasty Grasmere bacon sarnie for £4.50 or full English for £8.50 right through until noon, or a seasonal soup at lunchtime for £4.50 with kids’ meals from £2.50. Or just grab a warming hot choccie for £2.25, wrap up and take a brisk walk round the lakes.

The Orangery at Burghley House Burghley House in Stamford is a stunning historic building right

on our doorstep that’s featured in several films. While the house might be closed over the winter the stunning parkland with herds of deer is open and free to visit. So why not head over for a crisp winter walk, get some fresh air and then warm up in the gorgeous Orangery for tea and cake when it re-opens on Wednesday January 3. It will then be open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm. It has a full range of delicious menu options using locally sourced fresh ingredients provided by Absolute Taste.

Squire’s Coffee House at Peterborough Museum January is a great time to try something you rarely get chance to and a visit to Peterborough Museum and the City Gallery should be on your list. The museum in Priestgate is a treasure trove of interesting exhibits all displayed in a fascinating interactive way since it was refurbished a few years ago and is free to visit (except on special event days). Once you’ve taken a look around the museum and the latest exhibition in the City Gallery you can enjoy tea and cake and lots more in the lovely Squire’s Coffee House inside the museum. It serves great tasting coffee and speciality teas, hot choccie, delicious homemade cakes, paninis, jackets and sandwiches – all available to eat in or take-away. There’s even a kids’ lunch box for just £3.95.

Peterborough Vegetarians and Vegan Group A popular new year resolution is often to try and reduce meat intake. The benefits are well documented, but we understand and appreciate that changing lifelong habits and ingrained ideologies is difficult. If you’ve made this decision allow us to introduce the Peterborough Vegetarian & Vegan Group, who can offer you a helping hand. The social group continues to grow in popularity, and now boasts over 1,000 members on its Facebook page. The group meets monthly and hosts a vegan foodshare at Soul Happy on Cowgate. There’s also the occasional outing to a restaurant – veggie friendly of course – so 18 www.espmag.co.uk

not only will they inspire you to stick to your goal, but also help you make lots of great new friends along the way. “January is the perfect time to go vegan with the Veganuary campaign,” Paul from the group tells ESP. “We’re here to offer any advice and support to any transitioning vegans. You don’t have to be vegan to attend our foodshare, but all our food is vegan-friendly – try it, you might like it!” For more information on Peterborough Vegetarian & Vegan Group, and to find out when their socials are, visit their Facebook page. New vegetarian and vegan menu at Turtle Bay!

If you’re somebody who’s pledged to make a dietary change in 2018, or are simply fed up with menus lacking in detail for those with special requirements, then good news – Turtle Bay are here to help! The restaurant, which since opening in Peterborough has been nothing short of an excellent addition to both our culinary scene and nightlife, has upped its game once more and launched a separate vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free menu. Take it from a long term sufferer – this makes going out for a meal infinitely easier! The menu boasts dishes which have quickly established themselves as extremely popular with veggies in the city, such as their Spinach, Aubergine & Sweet Potato Curry and Halloumi & Mushroom Burger. The team have then taken it one step further with the provision of drinks and cocktails. What better way to celebrate the news than clinking a couple of 2-4-1 Jamaican Mules! ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

I cannot believe we are into the year 2018! “And off it, my partner gave birth to our first child and it is the greatest feeling in the world to be a father. My Mrs deserves enormous credit, she has been phenomenal. She knows that I work in an intense environment and she has allowed me to get the sleep I need before a match day to go out there and run about.

“It has been fantastic and I just want it to continue. I want to try and help the team climb this table and get to where we want to be. My team-mates have been so supportive and we have a really close knit dressing room.”

I want to try and help the team climb this table and get to where we want to be.

H

owever, when I think about it closely, certainly from a Peterborough United perspective, it does feel like this season has gone on for ages and that is purely down to the sheer volume of games we’ve already played. Progression through the always complicated Checkatrade Trophy group stage saw us play three fixtures, including the first competitive game against our local rivals Cambridge United for over 15 years, before a 2-0 win over Southend United secured a meeting with free-scoring Sky Bet League Two promotion hopefuls Luton Town on January 9. We’ve made things difficult for ourselves in the Emirates FA Cup with replays required against National League sides Tranmere Rovers and Woking but both times we’ve come out on top in the second fixture by scoring five goals.

In fact, striker Jack Marriott, at the time of writing had bagged 17 goals in all competitions and I am writing this column before devouring a Christmas dinner. Marriott has been a revelation since signing from Luton in the summer and he capped off a truly remarkable few months with the birth of his first child. “It has been a wonderful year for me,” Marriott told ESP magazine. “On the pitch, things have been going really well for me and if I am Jack Marriott honest, I could have scored more than I have. I probably could have scored six in that Woking game and I was beating myself up about it for a few days afterwards because I set such high standards.

Off the pitch, preparations are well underway for the summer concert with Steps at the ABAX Stadium. I have to say, this is my era. Elton John transcends generations, but I grew up when Steps were at their peak and nobody can deny that Blue are a wonderful support act. All Rise is a tune! Aqua are also on the bill and tickets are selling well, so get yourselves over to theposhtickets.com and secure your seat (or standing position) because it promises to be a great show. On behalf of everyone at Peterborough United, I wish you all well for 2018 – let’s make it a good one and belated congratulations to all at ESP for keeping this magazine going in such quality in an era when everything seems to be an app on your phone. It is testament to the work that Sharon and her team have done. Phil Adlam

Time for Change

Inspiring ideas for 2018 It’s a new start – what will you change in your life this year?

Time for Change

Change...

...TO A BITE SIZE APPROACH!

So here it is – a nice fresh and shiny new year with 12 months of opportunity stretching out before us. How will we make the most of it and what will we ditch from 2017? In January we tend to review and reflect on how things turned out last year and make a cunning plan for how we’d like the next one to be better! So we’ve pulled together some ideas and experts to help you succeed. So, don’t just make that New Year’s Resolution now and feel bad when you’ve ditched it in a few weeks time – instead plan to make some changes throughout the year and introduce something new.

We’ve all done it – ‘resolved’ we’ll lose weight by Valentine’s Day, will become super fit by Easter, will be a millionaire by next Christmas… and we’ve all failed miserably! We asked local NLP Practitioner, Life and Business Coach Austen Moore for some advice on how to successfully make changes to your life in 2018…

The New Year can be filled with excitement and promise as we look toward the future, and with the joy of Christmas behind us the need for a positive outlook is stronger than ever. So what better time is there to decide on setting a future goal which could change your life forever? Say hello to my little friend ‘The New Year Resolution’! Some of us have our resolutions planned well in advance, whereas others like to announce it around the 1st January. Usually, rather early in the morning, surrounded by witnesses, in a less than fit state to even make a promise like “I’ll call you tomorrow”, let alone “I’m going to lose five stone”. Excluding those that wake up with no memory of even making a New Year’s Eve Resolution, of those that do the success rate of achieving this is extremely low. By low, we are talking somewhere in the region of 8%. So, what can you do to increase the chances of being successful with yours? Firstly, I’d like to state that I am a big fan of making a New Year’s Resolution. The principle of setting a goal to make some form of positive change in your life is brilliant! If 8% of us are successful at doing this then it’s a positive thing; 8 people in every 100 have changed their lives for the better and in some cases, may have changed the lives of many others in doing so. Imagine a multimillionaire who decides for New Year that he/she is going to give a percentage of their money annually to a charity and successfully does so. Regardless of who you are and what your goals are, increasing the success rate of the positive goals we set as humans will enrich everyone’s lives. And this will make the world a better place.

Austen Moore

To be successful, we first need to understand why we fail. There can be several factors, but one of the major contributors is that the goal is just far too large at the outset. By creating such a challenge, we can end up setting ourselves up for failure. So, let’s say for example, you’ve been working tirelessly for the last 10 years and not done any exercise and your evenings are spent in front of the TV gulping down ready meals or takeaway food. You then announce that you intend to complete an Ironman Race this year, which consists of extreme levels of training to compete in the world’s most gruelling challenge; this may be classed as setting yourself up to fail. The long-term goal may still be to compete in an Ironman, but this should be broken down into much smaller steps over time. The first step to success would be to go from a nonexerciser to an exerciser, and this should be done with small goals that increase over time. So, rather than go from no exercise to 1 hour of exercise 3 times a week, (which you may be less likely to manage), you could begin with 10-20mins of exercise just once or twice a week. This way you’re far more likely to find the time to complete it. As the weeks go by you can gently build on this.

To be successful, we first need to understand why we fail.

So, my advice for this new year is as follows. When you come up with your New Year’s Resolution, treat it like any other task in life, break it down into smaller chunks. To create new behaviours that are sustainable the shock approach or ‘giant leaps’ style of change only works for very few of us. To be successful, you need to take smaller steps and slowly build a new pattern of behaviour into your life. Plus, you get to celebrate all the smaller achievements on the journey, which will give you motivational boosts along the way! www.austenmoore.com

In ESP we’re always encouraging you to get out there and try something new and that applies to business too. So all you would-be Alan Sugars out there it’s time to go for it! The Peterborough Biscuit doesn’t just have a tasty name – this business festival’s proved pretty good at helping local businesses get their name out there too. We asked event organiser Edward Smith what changes he thinks businesses should try this year. “I would say they need to first invest in their own business,” says Edward. “Spend small amounts and see what happens, use minimal advertising on social platforms, go to cost effective exhibitions, have the right equipment, staff levels and more importantly get Edward Smith their accounts in order.” If you’ve got a great idea or a good business set up that needs to achieve more Edward says it’s no good hiding yourself away or just hoping you’ll put a sign up and everyone will come to you. “The biggest problem for most small/medium businesses is that no one might know they exist. Exposure is key in an ever expanding business climate, as is networking. There are plenty of free networking events in and around Peterborough. By networking you can tell people who you are and expose yourself to people that you may have never met before which could ultimately end up with you gaining you more clients and more money in your pocket. “This is also where The Peterborough Biscuit comes in, we hold the largest business event in the region and we could expose you to up to 250 businesses in one day plus a possible 3000 visitors, how much would you pay for that kind of exposure?” The next Peterborough Biscuit event is on February 7 at the East of England Arena. www.peterboroughbiscuit.co.uk

SOMEONE’S WORLD

The cliché of volunteering being something for those who are retired is something of the past now. We spoke to Freddie, a 22 year old student doing a year in industry. He was keen to put his spare time to good use by volunteering for Peterborough based Deafblind UK. “After starting work I realised that I might have a few spare hours each week and I wanted to try and do something positive with that time so I looked up volunteering opportunities through do-it.org. I saw a role as a home and social companion for a lady who likes going to the theatre, going for walks and just wanted a bit more company – perfect! “I could only give a few hours a week and so I doubted that would be enough to be taken on as a volunteer. Luckily for me, Deafblind UK said yes and they paired the two of us together! “Laurel and I would meet up for one evening each week to do anything from going for a coffee and a walk, to watching musicals at the theatre. “The best thing about being a volunteer befriender is having the opportunity to learn about someone who I probably wouldn't have met otherwise; who’s had a completely different life to mine.” Charities like Deafblind UK are always looking for people to volunteer their time. But if you can’t commit to a regular slot there are other things you can do; from supermarket collections to office work. For more information about Deafblind UK and the volunteering opportunities available, go to www.deafblind.org.uk.

...YOUR CAREER PROSPECTS This is the time of year when you look at how you’re going to improve your life in 2018. As well as getting fitter or going on a diet, one of the most popular resolutions is to improve your qualifications to help your career prospects. To study a degree you’d traditionally have to wait until September to start, but you don't need to wait so long anymore as University Centre Peterborough have a number of degrees which you can start w/c January 29 so there’s still plenty of time to apply. Many of the courses that start in January are suitable for mature students or if you’re already in employment. If you’re working it’s possible to still improve your career by studying as University Centre Peterborough timetable lectures which can help with work and personal commitments. Students on the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management would only need to be off work for the afternoon as the course includes evening study. Many other courses would only require one day release from work. How do I fund my studies? Some employers will sponsor their staff to complete a degree so check with your manager or HR department. Alternatively, tuition fees for the majority of courses are available for both UK and EU students so you can fund yourself and pay it off after you’ve completed the degree. Visit www.gov.uk/student-finance for further information about tuition fee and maintenance loans. Why start in January? If you start your degree in January you can benefit from the 2017/18 rate for undergraduate tuition fees which is £1,500 lower than most other universities and still available for UK and EU students. The following courses start w/c January 29, 2018: • BSc (Hons) Business Management • Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management • FdSc and BSc (Hons) Computing & Information Systems • FdSc and BSc (Hons) Crime & Investigative Studies • BEng (Hons) Integrated Engineering Top-up • BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism • BA (Hons) Performing Arts For more information about University Centre Peterborough please contact 01733 214466, email hello@ucp.ac.uk, visit www.ucp.ac.uk or attend an Open Day on Thursday January 11, 2018 from 5.30pm to 8pm. 24 www.espmag.co.uk

Eleanor Whitwell, volunteer for the environmental charity PECT, explains why this is the ideal time to make a difference…

How could you help? As well as small lifestyle changes you can make, volunteering gives you a great opportunity to make a difference. Peterborough-based charity PECT is working to achieve cleaner, greener, healthier places – and you can help.

green spaces. Drop-in volunteer tree planting days take place throughout the colder months, and tree maintenance days occur in summer, so there’s always the opportunity to get involved! Another great project, run by the local community, that you could support is the WestRaven Big Local Café and Community Garden. The café project is led by WestRaven Big Local, which is working to improve the local area. If you have any skills that may be useful to the project, visit www.westraven.co.uk. PECT recently launched Peterborough’s first community fridge here too, sharing surplus supermarket food to prevent it going to waste. “Here at PECT we really appreciate the vital support of all our volunteers,” explains PECT’s Selina Wilson. “Volunteers provide extra help to enable change to happen in our city, and it’s so important to us that people care about and want to improve the local area.” Volunteering is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and socialise. With a project like tree planting, you might also find yourself enjoying the fresh air, outdoors and physical exercise that, realistically, you’ve probably fallen back on over the festive season. In addition, the confidence you gain by doing something good is fantastic and it’s a great experience to add to your skillset.

What projects could you get involved in? Forest for Peterborough aims to plant over 180,000 trees by 2030 – one tree for every person in the city. This is an ambitious attempt to restore and expand Peterborough’s

2018 brings plenty of opportunity to take stock of your surroundings. If you wish for improvement in your local neighbourhood, then this is the year to take part and bring about the change that you want to see. Why is this the year to get involved? With continually developing environmental issues such as pollution, littering and deforestation, the impact is huge. These changes can affect your local environment, as well as your health. Air pollution is affecting the air you breathe and putting you at a higher risk of health problems. Action is needed now, rather than later.

Do you need another one? If you're not careful it's easy for the occasional glass in the evening to quickly become 2 or 3 glasses most days. Men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week. This is the same as 6 pints of average strength beer a week. If you regularly drink above the guidelines, cutting back on alcohol can help reduce the risk of developing health problems. Find out how:

Benefits of cutting down If you start cutting back, you'll probably notice these benefits: •

You may lose weight. With a pint of lager containing 190 calories the same amount as a slice of pizza, the calories in alcohol soon add up

Save some cash. The cost of drinking alcohol can quickly add up. Think how much you could save by making some small changes and cutting down.

Once you start cutting back, you may quickly find you have more energy and feel less tired during the day.

You’ll sleep better. Drinking can affect your sleep and stop you from sleeping deeply, so drinking less should help you feel more rested and full of beans.

You should reduce your risks of developing cancer, liver and heart disease and stroke.

It’s important to know how much you are drinking and making sure you don't drink more than the recommended guidelines.

Tips to cut down There are easy ways you can cut back, without cutting alcohol out completely: •

Having a couple of booze-free days each week

Swap strong beers or wine for lowerstrength ones

Choose a smaller drink

Alternate between an alcoholic drink and a soft drink

Avoid rounds so you stay in control

Download the free Drinks Tracker app

Need more support? Struggling to cut down or think you might have a problem with drinking? There's lots of help out there and a good place to start is with a visit to your GP who may refer you to the local Peterborough alcohol service Aspire free on 0800 111 4354. For more advice on how to cut down on alcohol visit www.healthypeterborough.gov.uk

...THE WAY YOU GET FITTER AND HEALTHIER We all know ESP’s Darren Grigas is a fit and healthy type now, but he knows a thing or too about what it’s like committing to get fitter – the pitfalls, pain and ultimately the gains. It’s not about becoming a super athlete, just about living a fuller life so whether it’s just a walk round the park or cycling to the shops, here’s his advice on how you can make the small changes… the new starters fade away by midFebruary, so it’s important to set realistic goals that can be maintained for the long-term and not burn you out before you really get going.

Darren Grigas

It’s the time when many New Year’s Resolutions will be set, started, and then fizzle out for many who expect too much too soon which can result in disappointment and quitting. Gyms are notoriously busy in January, then half of

Change...

Give it time Your ‘new you’ goal needs to fit around the rest of your life and become a new way of life for the rest of it, not just an unrealistic ‘6-week six-pack, beachbody, get ripped quick’ kind of fad that will burn you out and leave you frustrated that you don’t look like the Ken and Barbie models on the pack. Most people over-estimate what can be achieved in the short term but underestimate what can be achieved long term. Give yourself 2-3 weeks of getting

used to your new routine allowing your body to adapt. Make your new plans manageable and importantly, enjoyable! Shop smart As you train more, you’ll become hungrier and chances are you’ll be trying to watch what you eat too so be prepared to get ravenous. The simplest bit of advice for avoiding those sneaky cheat snacks is DON’T BUY THEM… if the stuff isn’t in your cupboards then you can’t buckle when you’re at home craving a biscuit. So, when you come to the crisps and chocolates aisle on your weekly shop, ask if that’s taking you towards or away from your goal, then calmly walk away and pretend you never saw it.

HOW AND WHEN YOU WORK OUT

One of the common things that puts us all off a gym routine is that it never quite fits in with our lifestyle. Now a new gym in the city could have the answer by allowing us to work out whenever we want! Anytime Fitness, the world’s largest and fastest growing 24-hour fitness franchise is opening in Ortongate in Peterborough. Anytime Fitness is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week giving you the convenience to work out, whenever it suits your busy lifestyle. They know that people want the freedom and accessibility of services right when they need them, and this innovative thinking has led to their popularity. We’ve all made our resolutions and, this year, it’s time to keep them. The way you live your life contributes to your wellbeing, just as much as the time you put in at the gym. Here’s manager Tom Fletcher’s few simple ways to improve your lifestyle and help achieve your goals… Walk The simple change of not looking for the closest parking spot is another small step to achieve your health goals. Park further away in carparks, or be the person to run errands in the office, anything to get your blood moving a little more than it would have before. Remember: 30 minutes of walking will lower your risk for numerous diseases and is great for your health.

26 www.espmag.co.uk

Mix It up I think we can all agree that working out sucks. Something I’ve found to make it suck less is mixing up your routine. Take a class you normally wouldn’t every month, or run outside rather than on a treadmill. Our fantastic Life Fitness kit can even offer you simulations so it feels and looks like you’re running outside! Every new activity you do will keep yourself from becoming bored and quit from your routine. Anytime

Fitness Peterborough offers you an array of instructor led classes and also thousands of exciting new virtual classes, we even have Insanity Training! With Anytime Fitness you don’t have to let the class timetable restrict your training regime! Take Vitamins Many of us, including myself, don’t have the most complete, and balanced diet. Taking a daily vitamin can help your body get the nutrients that you might not

be getting through your daily diet choices. Find the right kind for your body and it will help keep you healthy to reach your goals. Have a Positive Attitude This is another step that’s so easy and can make a huge difference. Don’t just expect results – work for them, and try to be patient. It takes 12 weeks to notice slight changes in our body after we take up exercise so don’t be disheartened if you

Slow down, enjoy the views If you’re running, then don’t head out trying to run the pace or distance you did ten years ago, start slow and allow those many tiny bones, ligaments and tendons in your feet to toughen up, you’ll need them! The most common advice I give to people starting up in running is to just slow down, get there when you get there. If you go too hard too soon then you increase your chance of injury and take away the enjoyment of running. You don’t have to go fast or far, just go. Get accountable If you need the moral support, then you can buddy-up with someone else chasing their own goals. This could be a running, cycling or gym partner which then gives each of you accountability to turn up, even on those cold dark mornings when you really don’t fancy it. If you want to up your game a little more, then the value of a good personal trainer can be well worth the money as you’ll get educated at the same time too. There’s a great website (www.pt-me.net) which allows you to quickly find personal trainers, fitness instructors, yoga classes and more in the Peterborough area. You can check their location, qualifications, bios and client reviews at a glance so it’s a great way to hand-pick someone who can help you on your way. So don’t aim for a New Year’s Resolution, instead make it a New Life Resolution and enjoy becoming a healthier, happier and more energetic version of you.

don’t notice instant changes! Thinking positively will keep you on track for your goals, rather than losing interest. Create a system that works best for you. That may be motivational quotes or giving yourself rewards for reaching your goals. Anytime Fitness can help you maintain that sought after positive attitude! Top tips for a healthy, balanced diet January for many people is a chance to re-focus their diet. Small changes now can help you get in shape. Making healthy eating your resolution for life can help you stay feeling great too! A healthy, balanced diet provides energy for the day, boosts mood and helps achieve a healthy weight. Eating well also reduces the chance of developing type-2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. Follow these healthier tips to help you get started.

1. Know what’s included in a healthy diet The Eatwell Guide can help you to follow a healthy, balanced diet. It shows how most people can achieve a healthier diet by eating a variety of different foods in the right amounts.

2. Wake up to breakfast Many of us miss out on important nutrients by regularly skipping breakfast. Get more energy for your morning activities by making time for breakfast. It can help support a healthy weight too. Plain Weetabix or shredded wheat, plain porridge or wholegrain toast make a good start to the day, try including some fruit too.

3. Eat plenty of fruit & veg Only half of Peterborough adults eat enough fruit and vegetables. It is recommended to have at least five portions of a variety of fruit and

vegetables each day. Try adding a portion (80g) to each main meal and having as a healthy snack in-between. Fresh, frozen, canned, dried and juiced all count.

4. Cut back on less healthy foods Food and drinks high in sugar, saturated fat and salt are not needed in the diet. Eat these less often and in smaller amounts. Swap biscuits or crisps for rice cakes, desserts and ice-cream to plain yoghurt and fruit or sugar free jelly and croissants or muffins for fruited teacakes. To avoid the temptation, try not to buy them in the first place!

5. Drink plenty Aim to have 6-8 glasses of fluid every day. Water is a healthy way to stay hydrated. Lower-fat milk, tea, coffee and sugar-free drinks all count. Fruit/vegetable juices or smoothies count but are limited to just one small glass (150ml) a day as they are

high in sugar. Try to avoid sugary soft drinks and fizzy drinks which are high in sugar.

6. Check the label Food labels can help you to see what is in your food and drink. Try to compare food labels for similar products and choose the healthier option. Download the free Change4Life BeFoodSmart app to scan products and show how much sugar, saturated fat and salt they contain. Available on the App store or Google Play. This January, start by making one small change to your diet. Write it down and tell friends or family for extra support. When you achieve your change, acknowledge your achievement and then start to introduce a second change. F

or most of us, January is a dark, bleak time of the year. The idea of ‘giving up’ perceived treats, which our mind immediately translates as ‘hardship’, just adds to the depression. Even if you live in sunnier climes, the notion of ‘doing without’ is hard for the soul to bear. So, this year let’s turn the tables. Instead of depriving yourself why not add something to your life or your wardrobe? It could be something that inspires beauty, enhances your pleasure or joy quotient, nurtures and soothes or up scales and refines your current clothing. The mind always prefers something positive to work

30 www.espmag.co.uk

Experts say that you have a far greater chance of success if you set new goals in May. Apparently, we naturally lean towards a more optimistic mindset later in the year. Maybe it’s time for a change of approach.

Although it’s probably better to make New Year Resolutions in May than January, I’ve (for the past few years at least) decided to choose a word to describe what I want, rather than a full blown statement of intent. Some of the words I’ve used have been Peachy, which was really fun to do, Inspirational (to be fair, this is my mantra for life), Brave, Curious, and Joyful.

6.

7. 8. 9. 10.

Go for a walk Talk to friends Dance Go to bed earlier Happiness is something to do, not something you have Focus on what you can control, not on what you can't Remember only the good times and laugh! Ask for a hug Look for opportunities in life's challenges Smile and you'll feel happier instantly

If you’re not currently doing so, why not have it as your intention for 2018? You’ll soon notice a positive difference in the way you feel, the way others resonate with you and the relative joy of opening up your wardrobe doors every day. To help change your look there are a few things to consider. When deciding what to wear, ask yourself the following questions:

Here are some of the simple things that can make life more pleasurable: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

That’s the fabulous thing about style. It’s yours! Wear what makes your heart sing and don’t worry about what others might think. You’ll never please everyone, so it’s pointless to try.

• • • This year, my word will be Satisfaction. To be satisfied has the connotation of being grounded with an air of contentment wrapped around it. It could just as easily be exciting and adventurous. Much more positive and gentle on the soul than a resolution, don’t you agree? Try it for yourself. It’s liberating.

Does it suit my mood today? Does it ‘lift’ my spirit when I put it on? Am I comfortable wearing it (physically, mentally and spiritually)? Is it appropriate for what I’m doing/where I’m going? Do I really love it (or is it just a ‘will do’)?

Make some changes this New Year Hello January 2018! Peterborough cathedral’s 900th anniversary and so much to celebrate locally in a big year for the city. But as we all know, January is also the perfect time to make those slight changes to our routines that might improve our health and beauty regimes for the better. So here are a few locally inspired ideas we can all work on together to ensure a happy and healthy 2018.

Get more sleep We all know we should... so why not start making the change from today! New research shows four in ten Britons are failing to get the recommended seven hours of sleep a night, and one in twenty people are sleeping for less than four hours. A top tip from the Sleep Council if you struggle to nod off: ‘Try and avoid large meals and too much hard-to-digest

food for three to four hours before going to bed, which includes red meat, cheese, nuts and fried foods. Instead, satisfy your cravings with a complex carbohydrate food, such as a couple of oatcakes, or some rye crackers with a bit of hummus. This can give a gentle release of energy and helps to stop us waking up hungry during the night’.

Look after your hands and nails With my big (3-0) birthday coming up this year, anti aging creams for the face have become a staple for my dresser. But the hands often get neglected. Just before Christmas I popped back to Alwalton Hall, Peterborough’s newest beauty sanctuary, for a manicure and to gain some top tips from the Alwalton Angels. 1. Exfoliate. The angels use exfoliant followed by hot flannels to massage the hands. An amazing treat and a great refresh for tired skin. 2. Always use a base coat for your base coat. The more time you spend on the manicure the more it becomes just right. So don’t always rush your nails and put on two base coats before the colour. 3. Hand creams are essential for January in the cold weather! Apply at least twice a day if possible, in the morning and evening. Of course Alwalton Hall will be happy to show you all of these tips this new year, with nail treatments starting from £25.

Refresh your tired party hair The problem with this time of year is that we might have been using the hair dryer to the max over the party season and the straighteners and curlers every other night. We are all guilty of that extra quick dry whilst the snow was falling outside or the rush to get ready for the party. There are some amazing products you can get locally to refresh tired and frazzled hair. My top suggestion is from Boots – this bargain at £4.59 is the Dove Intensive Repair Deep Treatment Mask. It’s an intensely nourishing treatment for damaged hair, enriched with Nutri-Keratin Repair Actives to help repair hair damage inside and out. With regular use, the formulation visibly repairs and progressively nourishes over time to make hair look and feel healthier in the long run.

Take up a health hobby It doesn't need to cost loads of money or take up tons of time if you’re a parent or workaholic. Here are three easy ideas – why not pick one for January and see how you go? 1. Reach 10,000 steps a day... every day! Make sure you hit the 10,000 step target, even at weekends. 2. Learn a new Yoga pose a week… have a look on YouTube. Then keep pictures maybe on Instragram or tweet @espmagazine. And join a local class if you really start enjoying it.

3. Make a new shake… Try a new flavour combo, like Blueberry Spinach Breakfast Smoothie • 2/3 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1 ripe banana • 2/3 cup frozen blueberries • 2 large frozen strawberries • 1 cup spinach leaves • 1/2 cup milk of choice • 1 tablespoon of honey

n the late 1920s, Peterborough saw the opening of Peterborough’s first indoor shopping centre, a collection of small, independent shops that created the historic Westgate Arcade. Today, Westgate Arcade has become a thriving hub for independently run businesses brimming with unique products, oneoff pieces, collector’s items and, importantly, a friendly personal touch behind each door. In 2018, Westgate Arcade turns 90 and there’s going to be a party. 36 www.espmag.co.uk

Its anniversary will be marked with a month-long celebration in July of this year – Independent Retailer Month – with surprises and delights to show off Peterborough’s hidden gem and invite people to walk down the Arcade and celebrate what’s on offer. Prancing on Ice I

n my teens, a weekly event for me and my mates was to get to the Wednesday or Friday ‘disco nights’ at the Peterborough Ice Rink. We’d have a cracking time skating around, hanging out and trying to impress girls with our moves; I was pretty handy back then. I recently had a nostalgic visit back to what’s now Planet Ice in Bretton with my children. We were invited to try out their new classes now available for all ages, and see how the place had changed. For those who aren’t yet confident on the ice or perhaps want to refine their skills to the next level, the rink now offers a number of ‘learn to skate’ courses for all ages. There’s the Ice Penguin course for toddlers from as young as 18 months up to 6 years, a Hockey Excellence course for those fancying themselves as a player and

With the new series of Dancing on Ice hitting our TV screens we sent Darren on a more gentle adventure this month to see if he and the family could cut a cool figure on the ice…

then there’s the Skate Excellence course. The Skate Excellence Learn to Skate course is the one we tried, as it was suitable for our varied levels of skill. My daughter Oonagh-Mae is pretty handy on roller skates but was quite anxious on the ice, then my lad Ethan, like me is a bit gangly, and he looked a bit like Bambi on ice. The course runs over a rolling sixweek period which is taught over eight grades. It adopts a system using colour coded boot covers and gloves which is a big help to understand how to best position your feet and move your body. The course teaches the fundamentals of ice skating which can be easily overlooked by those like me who are

The course is part of a bigger initiative to inject crucial training in the early stages which has been proven to go on to help more experienced skaters have that slight edge even at competitive levels. Our teacher had experience of skating for Team GB which is hugely reassuring to know that’s the calibre the course offers in a coach. These courses are open for all, don’t cost much at all and can take you or your children to a higher level in a short space of time.

The ballroom shoes are back in the closet and it’s time to don the skates instead as ESP’s Sarah Tempest moves on from the Strictly ballroom to the ice rink and casts her eye over the new series of Dancing on Ice…

R

eality stars, ice and injuries, it can only mean one thing! No, it’s not another excruciating series of Sarah Tempest Channel 4’s The Jump; Dancing on Ice is coming back after more than 3 years out in the cold (sorry, couldn’t resist). The ITV show features a host of celebrities being paired up with professional partners to learn to dance on ice (funny that) and then performing their routine each week before a panel of critical judges and being voted off one by one by the public. Think Strictly, only colder. And with less forgiving costumes. The show originally ran from 2006 to 2014 and was hosted by Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, with the latter being replaced in 2011 by Christine ‘Bleakley’ Lampard after she left to host the then brand new BBC flagship programme The Voice. However, fortunately for fans of Dancing on Ice (and current The Voice host Emma Willis), Holly’s tenure lasted only one series, leaving her free to dig out her posh frocks and stand once again beside her TV husband Phil as king and queen hosts of the ice rink. And Phillip and Holly aren’t

the only familiar faces in the show’s reboot as not only is ‘TV’s Mr Nasty’ Jason Gardiner returning to the show as the acid tongued judge (Craig Revel-Horwood without the Fab-U-lousity) but Olympic champion ice dancers Jayne Torville and Christopher Dean are also making a comeback, although this time they’re leaving the coaching behind and taking a seat on the judging panel. Diversity dancer and choreographer Ashley Banjo completes the judging line up.

There’s the usual healthy dose of reality TV stars...

But what of the celebs taking part? There’s the usual healthy dose of reality TV stars (Kem from Love Island, Jake Quickenden from X Factor and I’m a Celeb, and baker Candice from GBBO, who’s more used to frosting and icing of a different kind), a GMB weather man (Alex

Beresford), Donna Air (no, I’m not sure what she does either but she was in Byker Grove with Ant ‘n’ Dec) sports people (Max Evans and Perry Shakes-Drayton) Cheryl Baker and, of course, the obligatory smattering of soap stars including Brooke Vincent and Anthony Cotton (from Corrie) and Stephanie Waring from Hollyoaks. Stephanie, who’s played Cindy Cunningham on and off since 1996, is paired with French professional ice dancer Sylvain Longchambon, who left her co star Jennifer Metcalfe for his now wife Samia (from Corrie). Awkward… Speaking on BUILD in London, our cover star Stephanie admitted she was very nervous about joining the show. “It’s so much to take on,” she said, “but I think I’m up for the challenge. I’ve been watching some bits on YouTube, especially [co star] Jorgie Porter. The first day was pretty tough, I fell over once but that wasn’t on camera. Thank God!” she laughed. With cricketer Monty Panesar already being replaced on the show (by singer Lemar) due to injury, the contestants can surely expect lots more bumps and bruises along the way, and not just to their egos. Who’s in need of a plastic penguin to cling onto on the way round? Who will be so hilariously awful that they’ll be voted through each week and who will attempt the notorious Headbanger move? Only time will tell but one thing’s for sure; Dancing on Ice is set to heat up Sunday night telly again nicely. www.espmag.co.uk

100 miles of ice to start the year!

“Here's the secret; it's never easy, it's always 100% and can hurt and damage me a lot, but it's worth it. I'm lucky enough to be able to push myself to these extremes to help make a difference to those who aren't so lucky, those who simply hope to be able to walk or talk like normal children again. I'd be failing them if I didn't put myself out there to do something for them."

A new year always brings with it new challenges, hopes and goals. Our resident extreme adventurer and columnist Darren Grigas is renowned for taking on a big challenge and this year is no different.

I

n his continued support for local charity Anna's Hope he's taking himself to new extremes and will at the end of January be travelling to Outer-Mongolia as part of a select few attempting a world-first at running 100 miles across a frozen lake. It's no surprise it's never been done, because, well why would anyone do such a thing?! Facing lethally low temperatures down to -40c, in an area inhabited by wolves, lynxes, bears and many more sharptoothed animals that can run much faster than him, Darren hopes to achieve this feat and go into the record books raising funds and awareness for Stamford based charity Anna's Hope, a fabulous cause close to his heart that helps improve the lives of children battling brain cancer.

The ESP team wish him the very best of luck and hope he’s a) not fallen down a crevice, b) been eaten by anything and c) thawed out in time to write for ESP again next time with some more (easier) adventures we can all try out. Darren and all at Anna's Hope would be thrilled for any support, donations can be made here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundra ising/mongolianicechallenge

"Having met children that have had their lives transformed by Anna's Hope and seen first-hand the amazing value in their work, I'm passionate about contributing to that in any way I can,” says Darren. “I have to up the anti with every new challenge I take on as some seem to think it might come easy to me. ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD

MAZE RUNNER: THE DEATH CURE

After the alleged sex scandal that engulfed original star Kevin Spacey, he was quickly replaced with The Sound of Music’s Christopher Plummer – who then went on to garner a Golden Globes nomination – at the behest of Oscar-winning director Ridley Scott, to try and retain the integrity of this crime-drama. Mark Wahlberg co-stars in this movie, which tells the kidnapping story of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III, and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather Jean Paul Getty (Plummer) to pay the ransom.

In this epic finale to dystopian teen trilogy Maze Runner – which was delayed after lead star Dylan O’Brien was seriously injured in an on-set accident – Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. To save their friends, they must break into the legendary last city, a WCKD controlled labyrinth – which just may turn out to the deadliest maze they’ve ever faced – and try and find a cure for the deadly disease, known as the Flare, which has blighted mankind. THE POST

DOWNSIZING

Steven Spielberg directs the acting dream team of Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in this biographical 70s-set political thriller. It chronicles the cover up that spanned four US Presidents, and pushed the country’s first female publisher (Streep) of The Washington Post, and its hard driving editor (Hanks), to battle the government in publishing the Pentagon Papers.

This social satire from the Oscar-nominated director of The Descendants, sees Matt Damon’s therapist shrunk down to four inches tall so that he and his wife (Kristen Wiig) can save the planet and afford a better lifestyle at the same time. But there’s one major catch, this new procedure can’t ever be reversed. Oscarwinner Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) co-stars.

Film Review

STAR WARS – THE LAST JEDI

(12A)

The eighth instalment in the most-famous movie franchise of all-time is another solid extension of Star Wars lore.

I

t might not quite be the groundbreaking The Empire Strikes Back-alike entry diehards may have been hoping for with the hype surrounding director Rian Johnson (Looper) – but there’s still so much to enjoy here. So negatively, let’s get the minor nit-picks out of the way first so we can move onto the good stuff: A) It suffers from being darker (almost Rogue One-esque) one minute, then interspersing an almost juvenile comedic moment the next; B) that also leads to some clunkily meshed together scenes; C) which can be prominently seen in the sub-par Monte Carlo-type set-piece (complete with unnecessary political messages being blatantly touted) with Finn and Rose that unnecessarily stops the movie’s flow and is arguably the only low point; and D) if this sequence was scaled back the movie could’ve been ‘tauter’ compared to the two and half hour run-time (which could leave some younger kids a tad bored between action scenes). But now that’s out of the way, the force is still truly strong with this sequel to The Force Awakens set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. After an exciting opening salvo, which sees a bombing campaign on a massive Star Destroyer ‘Juggernaut’ ship led by Oscar Isaac’s maverick pilot Poe Dameron as the Resistance tries to escape the clutches of The New Order, the film virtually starts where Awakens ends with Rey (Daisy Ridley) handing Luke Skywalker (Mark

Hamill) his lightsaber back. But a ‘grumpy’ Luke doesn’t want to be found after feeling he failed the ‘Jedi’ faith when Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) turned on him, and she spends most of the first half of the film trying to persuade the legendary knight to potentially train her – and to assure him she won’t turn to the dark side like Ren did when seduced by Andy Serkis’ Supreme Leader Snoke. With generally three intertwining stories, headlined by Luke/Rey/Ren, the other two are taken up with the First Order – with the relentless General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) at the helm – chasing down the Resistance, including Leia (the late Carrie Fisher) and newcomer Vice Admiral Holdo (Jurassic Park’s Laura Dern); and the now-awoken Finn (John Boyega) teaming with another newcomer, Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose, to try and find a master codebreaker to secretly sneak onto the Star Destroyer and deactivate a tracking device to help aid the Resistance’s escape. And the vast majority of Johnson’s work is right on the money, with a decent balance of heartfelt storyline, comedic relief and action sequences, making this a truly worthwhile entry in the Star Wars canon. Particularly the aforementioned opening scene, along with a Snoke/Rey/Ren confrontation, a nod to the ATAT walker battle on Hoth, and the return of Hamill’s Skywalker being some of the stand-out high-points, that puts The Last Jedi at least on the same level as The Force Awakens – but in a

completely different way. Never ever reaching a fivestar movie, but never near a three-star experience – this sequel stays competently in four-star territory throughout. With other previous favourites thrown in like Anthony Daniels’ C3-PO, Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata, Gwendoline Christie’s stormtrooper chief Captain Phasma, Chewie, R2-D2 and BB8 – along with much more Snoke this time out – Johnson does a sterling job in keeping it all sewn together, and despite one or two strays off track, packs in a whole string of emotions to give you a lot of bang for your cinematic buck. For the sum of its parts The Last Jedi probably deserves to be properly reviewed again after Abrams finishes the Skywalker saga with the ninth part in two years time – because being

looked at in isolation may take away some of the fine work Johnson has done here. And he deserves immense credit for getting the ‘middlepart slog’ out of the way to set it all up nicely for Abrams – who can go wherever he wants with the final instalment. It probably doesn’t have the instant replay value as Awakens in a nostalgic sense, but it already deserves another viewing as so much is packed in. And seeing Hamill in action one more time makes seeing it again worth it for him alone. And if not just for him, then for the late Carrie Fisher, who goes out on a notable high – with one particularly spine-tingling scene involving her – that makes The Last Jedi a memorable ‘last’ outing for Star Wars’ princess. May the force be with her… always. Gavin Miller

DESTINY 2 – EXPANSION 1: CURSE OF OSIRIS

#####

(X1/PS4/PC)

The first downloadable content for Destiny 2 does a competent – but hardly groundbreaking – job of expanding the universe. But just to a point. It might not quite be the end-game extension that some naysayers have been craving for, but for Destiny die-hards the Vex-controlled Mercury provides a tidy campaign, notable new strike and adventure missions, a decent raid lair activity, and fledgling – but currently underutilised – social space that houses a heroic public event. Sadly the boss-battles – maybe trying to make it accessible for all – are relatively easy for any half-experienced Destiny campaigner, and it won’t take you very long to work through the content in this new Infinite Forest-set domain on the closest planet to the sun. But for fans it just about offers up enough of an extension – particularly when you add in new weaponry like The Colony grenade launcher which fires out crazy robotic spiders – to not leave this expansion ‘cursed’.

The ESP Comedy Guide Sarah Slack brings us the ESP guide to where the laughs are at this month…

Best of the Fest Need something to look forward to in order to beat those January blues? In my opinion there’s nothing wrong with a bit of preparation and organisation, especially this month when your body wants something to digest that isn’t chocolate/booze/chocolate flavoured booze. Luckily next month sees some fresh comedy coming our way and then it’s not long to wait until my favourite time of the year for local comedy thanks to the Key Theatre’s annual Key Comedy Fest. After casting my eye over what’s coming up, here are my recommendations so you can grab your tickets before they soon sell out: Friday February 9

The Horne Section Edinburgh Fringe favourites return to Peterborough with a brand new hour of live music, storytelling and spontaneous stand-up, starring a five-piece jazz band and led by little Alex Horne (as seen on Taskmaster). Friday February 16

Rachel Parris & Chris Washington Headlining the theatre’s comedy club during the festival will be up and coming comic Chris Washington, who’s starting the year with an Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nomination under his belt. Joining him will be Rachel Parris, who’s best known for her musical comedy skills and for most recently appearing on BBC2’s topical comedy show The Mash Report. Friday March 9

Ellie Taylor As seen on Live at the Apollo and as heard on BBC Radio 4, this may be your last chance to see Ellie Taylor’s refreshingly honest show about marriage, motherhood and Mumsnet before she heads to the Fringe this year with a brand new show – don’t miss out. Sunday March 11

Shappi Khorsandi Fresh from her stint in the jungle on I'm a Celebrity, Shappi will be performing 'Mistress and Misfit', a show all about England's unsung heroine, Emma Hamilton. Expect an educational and entertaining evening from one of the country's finest female comedians. For more information on this year’s Key Comedy Fest, call 01733 207239.

Have a Ball at Rich Hall’s Hoedown! Settle down for a slice of Americana next month as Rich Hall will be performing his critically acclaimed country music comedy show at the Stamford Corn Exchange. Performing on Friday February 16, Rich Hall’s Hoedown strives to make America truly great again through song, stand-up and political satire concerning the current Presidential cabinet. As a

firm favourite on British TV screens for the past 10 years, Rich Hall offers a no holds barred approach to modern US politics with great musicianship along the way. Described as ‘blissfully funny’ by The Guardian, make sure you don’t miss out on this hysterical hoedown – tickets available on 01780 766455.

Sarah’s One to Watch:

Daniel Nicholas The start of the new year often brings new traditions, so this year as your ESP comedy expert I’ve made a New Year’s Resolution of highlighting the best up and coming acts visiting our city this year. This month to start things off will be Daniel Nicholas, a regular on the Midlands comedy circuit and a previous BBC New Comedy Award nominee. I first saw Daniel perform at the 2015 Leicester Comedy Festival, where he was nominated for Best Festival Debut thanks to his unpredictable approach to comedy that unashamedly aims to break all the rules. With plenty of audience participation and surreal slapstick moments, his interactive act is perfect for fans of alternative and abstract comedy and will appeal to fans of Vic and Bob or Sam Simmons. Daniel Nicholas will be performing alongside Jack Campbell and Peter Brush at this month’s Pint of Comedy club at the Stamford Arts Centre. Tickets available on 01780 763203.

New season at The Glasshouse

The Glasshouse at the Key Theatre enjoyed a very successful run in 2017 and it’s very encouraging to see that some early dates have just been announced for this year.

Organisers Paul Biggins and his partner Charlotte have put in place some really exciting acts to appear in 2018 On January 28 it’s Tom Wright and Meg McPartlin. These are both leading local singersongwriters. Also the prog rock band Brotherhoods Roundabout are performing an acoustic set. There are three acts on February 18 – singer/ pianist Michael Keithson, guitar duo Poor Boy, who’ll be playing acoustic covers and originals, also acoustic rock/pop trio Decades are appearing. Then there are four to see on March 25 – guitar duo Joe & Mary with some covers and originals, rock from Dan Perrin, rock trio Car Park Rendezvous and singer/songwriter Caitlyn P. All sessions are acoustic and are held upstairs in the Riverside Bar. The Glasshouse has been an important live music date in Peterborough for decades on and off and it’s great to see it back with its present organisers. All monthly sessions are run on Sunday afternoons between 2pm and 5pm. ESP caught up with Paul and asked him how long they’ve been involved with The Glasshouse gigs and what was their objective? “Charlotte and I have been running the Glasshouse Acoustic Sessions for two years now. We wanted to continue its excellent reputation for promoting local acoustic acts, but also forge new connections, for example with local radio such as PCRFM's ‘Peterborough’s Most Wanted’ show on 103.2FM.”

Photos: Paul Biggins

What sort of vibe is it and what type of acts do you go for, are they all local? “We want it to be relaxed and friendly, but also professional, with good sound and proper promotion for the artists. We're very keen to find new acts – young, and not-so-young – and try and make each event a mix of styles, ages, and genders. Most of the acts are local, but we've had performers from across Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, and also Leeds, Essex, Norfolk and Lincolnshire.”

48 www.espmag.co.uk

Why would you suggest people give it a try if they've not been along before? “The Key Theatre Riverside Bar is a fabulous venue, and you are guaranteed to hear superb local acoustic acts in a comfortable environment.”

What do you hope to achieve this year? “We want to do more promotion so we get a good crowd along at every date. We want to make more connections to new acts and grow the stable of artists who have performed here.” There are far more acoustic and open mic sessions now – is this competition or a sign that we have a good scene in the city? “It's a very good sign. Artists need open mic sessions and similar venues to hone their performing skills. Singer-songwriters in particular need outlets for their original material. We tap into the open mic circuit around Peterborough to find new and interesting acts. There's also a lot more live music on national radio and TV, which is encouraging.” I really hope that the past two years success of The Glasshouse continues in 2018 and wish Paul and Charlotte all good luck. It really is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, watching and encouraging local musicians. We at ESP will keep you up to date with who you can see at the sessions as the year progresses and you can get more information from www.glasshouseacoustic.org.uk.

The Traveling Wilburys Experience

Limehouse Lizzy are back

If you’re a lover of the brand of rock played by Thin Lizzy then, if you have never seen them before, I recommend that you get your tickets for the Limehouse Lizzy concert at Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday January 6. Stamford is part of yet another lengthy UK tour. Limehouse Lizzy are officially one of the hardest working bands in the UK. They were accredited for their live shows by the Performing Rights Society in December 2011 and received their certificate from PRS chairman (and respected songwriter) Guy Fletcher OBE. They’re also a past winner of the title Live Band Of The Year by Guitarist Magazine. They’re renowned for an action-packed pyrotechnicsfuelled explosion of a show, as they continue to keep the spirit of celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide. One of the main reasons why they’ve remained so popular is the dedication of the band to the performance of Thin Lizzy, and also lead singer and bassist, Wayne Ellis, who’s hailed as ‘as close as you can possibly get to the late great Philip Lynott himself’. There’s an amazing likeness, the same left handed guitar and I wonder whether Wayne wears his hair in dreadlocks so as to avoid the tribute band allegation with Phil. The band have also added a tribute into their show to exThin Lizzy guitarist (and world renowned solo artist) Gary Moore. Limehouse Lizzy are really well worth seeing and as one critic summed it up in a live review – ‘Whilst there is Wayne Ellis, the memory of Thin Lizzy will be kept very much alive and well, thank you!’

It seems unbelievable, but it’s 30 years since the Traveling Wilburys were founded by the famous five and released their first album. Later that year one of the original members, Roy Orbison sadly died. Now, 30 years on the memory of Big O is alive with the release this Christmas of Roy with The Royal Philharmonic and a rejig of all his hits. And Peterborough has a chance to relive some of his songs as there’s a special tribute to The Big O when The Traveling Wilburys Experience visits the Key Theatre on Saturday February 3. The show will take you on a journey through the story of the Wilburys. With expert narrative and big screen action behind the band, this 30th Anniversary Special will also feature tributes to

the other four founding members of the Wilburys – Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. All the Traveling Wilburys’ hits and classics are included in the show including Handle with Care, End of the Line, Wilbury Twist, and the fantastic Tweeter and the Monkey Man. It’s really two shows in one because in addition to the Wilbury’s set, the performance explores the solo hits of the Famous Five. Mr Blue Sky, Pretty Woman, Blowin in the Wind, Here Comes The Sun and Running Down a Dream, will be performed amongst many others. Tickets for The Traveling Wilbury Experience are available from the Key Theatre box office on 01733 207239.

Tickets are available from The Stamford Corn Exchange on 01780 766455.
