20 YEARS OF ESP It’s time to celebrate 20 years of ESP! When we published the very first issue of ESP Magazine back in December 1998 with Robbie Williams adorning our front cover, who knew we would reach 20 years in print? Ever since then we’ve grown and evolved along with the city and spread our message far and wide about all the good things greater Peterborough has to offer. We’ve shouted about local talent, supported our city’s events, applauded anyone who’s achieved success in their field and caught up with the many celebrities who’ve visited over the years. Despite being a free monthly publication we’ve always worked as hard as if it were a paid for title, and photographed and produced editorial features and distributed news read by thousands of readers each month, thanks to the support of local advertisers. Our website www.espmag.co.uk continues the story every week with even more news and events and our social media keeps you posted on the latest every day. There’s lots more to come as we celebrate throughout 2019 promoting all that’s good about the area and looking back at how things have changed. Look out for more online content, our new Instagram account and lots of special features by our local team. You’ve been with us since the start and we would love to see your photos from back in the day or hear your memories of good times out an about in the area – get involved and message us, or email on office@espmag.co.uk. What have been your highlights and good times – let us know!

Panto Time! It’s simply not Christmas without a trip to the Panto! ESP’s Mikey Clarke will be in the front row… Oh yes he will! Mikey Clarke

Peter Pan at the Key Theatre

W

hen I reviewed last year’s Panto (Sleeping Beauty) at the Key Theatre, I described it as being just as good (if not better) than some shows I’ve seen at the West End. I was not exaggerating. So… no pressure guys, the bar has been raised and I’m expecting big things with Simon Egerton’s version of Peter Pan. It tells the tale of a boy who never grew up, as he and his heroic troupe of ‘lost children’ face off against the villainous pirates led by Captain Hook aboard the Jolly Roger. It’s a story we all know and love but expect a few surprises as this will (as always) feature a new and original script for the Key Theatre. Egerton returns again this year as the director, writer, composer and lyricist and Rob Hazle also returns as the stage musical director. More returning faces include Rebecca Levy as principal boy, Peter Pan, after her success as Aurora in Sleeping Beauty. Last year’s ‘Fairy Cherry Blossom’ Katie Pritchard dons a

pair of wings once more in the role of Tinker Bell. Josh Haberfield, who tickled funnybones as Jingles the Jester returns in the comic role of Little Johnnie. Lastly, having played villains everyone loves to hate, Robin Johnson now plays Captain Hook’s sidekick Barnacle Bill. Newcomers include the imposing Richard Costello as Captain Hook and the dame this year comes in the form of Nanny Goggins played by Anthony Hoggard – a panto veteran. This is, of course, not to forget a full complement of ‘lost children’ all played by a chorus of talented young actors auditioned from the local area. One of the things I love the most about Panto at the Key Theatre is the intimate surroundings always mean you feel part of the action and have a great view… and there are always some great local references! The panto runs from Thursday December 6 to Sunday January 6. In total there are 60 performances with many shows already sold out. Book now on 01733 207239 or visit www.vivacity.org/panto.

Robin Hood at The Cresset

T

he Cresset has drawn in some fantastic celebs in the past, and Premier Pantomimes’ Robin Hood will be no exception! This year’s band of merry men includes former Corrie star Nick Cochrane (Andy McDonald in the soap) as Will Scarlett and sees the third Cresset panto appearance of Mitch Hewer (Skins/Britannia High/Casualty) as our hero in tights, Robin Hood! Mitch is ready for a packed schedule of performances this month and told ESP – “I actually really enjoy it, it’s fun – you can’t really moan about hard work as a performer, I love the constant momentum and it’s over the Christmas period so everyone’s always really happy and full of the Christmas spirit, it’s a good vibe.” He continued, “I love it when the kids get really into it – especially when I run around the auditorium – the kids get screaming, it’s fun. And I love it when things go wrong!” One of our favourite panto baddies, Lawrence Stubbings returns as the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham and Zach Vanderfelt is back in glorious form as everyone’s favourite Dame with the best wigs, jokes and incredible frocks as Nurse Gertie Glucose!

Let’s not forget the ladies as Isabelle Lock (from the X Factor girlband Mon Amie) plays Pandora the witch and lovely Laura Wenton is Maid Marian. When we caught up with Nick Cochrane he was already in cheeky form so we think you can expect a real laugh on stage! “I’ll be dancing around and being stupid as that seems to be my forte! I absolutely love it,” he told ESP. “It’s great fun. It’s a brilliant time of year, it’s great for the kids and I love every minute of it. I only have to stick to the script ‘ish’ – as the comic, silly element I have the licence to just mess about really.” As well as a great show, the Cresset also tends to bring in an amazing audience. Sat amongst a full crowd surrounded by the sound of laughter is simply magical. I can’t wait. Robin Hood runs from December 8 – 30. Book now on 01733 265705 or www.cresset.co.uk. Tickets for next year’s panto Cinderella are on sale now. Keep an eye out for ESP’s reviews for Peter Pan and Robin Hood at www.espmag.co.uk.

Christmas Lights Switch-on

City Centre gets Festive Photos: Emma Bothamley and Chris Brudenell

Thousands turned out for the big Christmas lights switch on event in Cathedral Square which was held on a Friday for the first time. The event organised by Peterborough City Council and supported by Vodafone Gigafast was hosted by Kev & Ros from Heart FM and featured music from local entertainers. Local star of TV’s The Apprentice, Khadija Kalifa from Bourne, joined the Mayor and Father Christmas to turn on the lights after a burst of fireworks lit up the sky.

Queensgate’s Queensgate shopping centre opted for a new style launch for their new decorations with a fabulous Festive Fiesta. The centre came to life with dancing bellboys, elves, and Christmas characters and saw shoppers win dozens of prizes in their family gameshows. Santa’s grotto is now open in Central Square through until December 24. Visits are £5.99 per child, and for a little extra they can have a photo with him too. For full grotto opening times see www.queensgateshopping.co.uk/whats-on/events. The popular EnAbled shopping event returns on Wednesday December 7 from 4pm8pm. This offers a relaxed and comfortable shopping environment for disability groups, carers and individuals with specific needs, of all ages and abilities. Low-volume soothing music will play throughout the centre, the lights will be dimmed, and the tannoy system will be turned off. There will be ‘quiet zones’ manned by friendly staff, sensory areas and even a dog station for guide dogs. 10 www.espmag.co.uk

Etsy Made Christmas Fair

Christmas at the Cathedral Peterborough Cathedral is always a focal point at Christmas but after a fantastic year celebrating its 900th anniversary I’m sure the festive season will be extra special this month. As well as the hugely popular Christmas Eve carol service (get there early for a seat though!) there are lots of other ways to enjoy this amazing space. One that caught my eye is a Silent Disco on Friday December 7 from 7pm – 9pm! Silently dance the night away to some fantastic Christmas hits in the beautiful cathedral setting. Tickets are £7 on the cathedral website or get your mates together for a cheaper group booking. If you want to get that warm and fuzzy feeling then soak up the atmosphere at one of their candlelight tours and explore the building after hours on Wednesday December 19 and Saturday December 22, both at 7pm. Tickets are £15 including a glass of wine or a soft drink If you’re busy working in town up until Christmas you don’t have to miss out on the festive feel – just pop into the Business and Shoppers’ Carols over your lunchtime on Thursday December 20 at 1pm and belt out a few Christmas favourites. There’s even mulled wine and mince pies afterwards! Visit www.peterboroughcathedral.org.uk for all you need to know. 12 www.espmag.co.uk

Celebrate Christmas and local creatives with the Etsy Made Local Rutland & Stamford Christmas Fair on Saturday December 15. The first Etsy Made Local Stamford Christmas Fair will be a showcase of some of the best of Rutland & Stamford’s Etsy creative community and the ideal opportunity to conquer Christmas shopping and connect with the makers and designers behind the perfect gifts. The free event at Stamford Arts Centre will feature the makers, designers and collectors that sell on Etsy.com, the online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods. It’s about encouraging people to look locally for pressies from more than 20 Rutland & Stamford local makers and designers. It’ll feature unique, high quality gifts from homewares and jewellery to art and babywear to get you Christmas ready. The venue has disabled access and facilities for wheelchair users and a café will be selling hot drinks and light refreshments throughout the day.

Cathedral Christmas Concert The Peterborough Cathedral Christmas Concert is of course one of the main highlights so book in quick for this event on Friday December 21. It’ll be a fantastic atmosphere as Peterborough Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir and Festival Chorus will present a programme which includes Britten 'A Ceremony of Carols', accompanied on the harp and all performed by candlelight. There will also be Christmas carols for you to join in with. Tickets are £15, £20 or £25 (under 18's half price). Book online or call Peterborough Information Centre, 41 Bridge Street on 01733 452336.

Christmas Fair And Fine Food Market @ Burghley Watching the Downton Abbey Christmas special has become a tradition. I’d love to be warped into that show during this magical time of year, but as it’s unlikely – I’ll have to play pretend and visit another grand Elizabethan house instead. Christmas will be bigger than ever at Burghley House in Stamford with a luxury gift fair and seasonal food market, all in a picture postcard setting with the magnificent Tudor house as a backdrop. And this year, Burghley’s popular Christmas Fair and Fine Food Market (December 6 – 9) is also working in association with The Angel Fair to raise money for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK. Spread over four days, it’ll feature more than 100 exhibitors in total with even more seasonal gifts from luxury jewellery, leather bags and cashmere to stocking fillers and decorations. As well as the heated marquees packed with Christmas ideas, there will also be additional seasonally decorated log-cabin type stalls too. For festive fayre, the Fine Food Market will once again run alongside the gift fair, with more than 30 suppliers selling handmade cheeses, artisan breads, organic vegetables, luxury sweet treats and rare breed meats. It’s free entry but there will be a parking charge of £5 per car. Visit www.burghley.co.uk for more details.

Lights of Love The annual carol service in aid of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is always a magical event and this year will be extra special as it’s being staged at Peterborough Cathedral. It’s an uplifting event to remember, reflect and celebrate loved ones at this special time of year so join in with the singing on Sunday December 16 from 5.30 – 8pm. For more details visit www.sueryder.org/thorpelights or call 01733 225900.

Happy 20th ESP! Wow, yes, it’s been 20 years since the first issue of ESP Magazine was published and what a glorious time we’ve all had.

photos of people having a great time in our bars and clubs until it got to the point where we were all taking selfies on iPhones to stick on Facebook. And while I mention bars and clubs – they were the best and I was lucky to have been going out during a time when we were spoilt for choice. Rinaldo’s had just closed, Quo Vadis was the place to be and 5th Avenue was still rocking too. We weren’t without our fair share of bars either. Places like Muswells and The Bar a little while later were two of my favourites. Back then you could go out with £20, drink five bottles of Sol or Hooch and still have enough for a naan sandwich from Chilli Hut at the end of the night. Today, you barely get change out of a fiver for a bottle of Peroni. A few years ago I introduced a feature in this column called Back In The Day. I’d love to resurrect it for the next 12 months but I can’t do it without your contributions. It’s your memories and photos that tell the 20 year story of ESP and how special moments lived through this special magazine. Email me and let’s relive those brilliant times. Until then, raise a glass and bring on another 20 years of Peterborough’s premier magazine.

I

over the years, this column is still all about covering positive stories and having a giggle. I’m particularly proud to have only missed writing one column during this time and that was when glandular fever beat me. And it isn’t until now that I’m beginning to wonder if I’m Peterborough’s longest running regular columnist, who just with ESP alone, has cobbled together these pages on more than 240 occasions and has written around 350,000 words in the process! So much has changed in the city since that first issue but some things are making a comeback after years in the wilderness. Our cover stars The Spice Girls, for example, were number 1 at Christmas with Goodbye and now they’re going to be touring again. The Nokia 6120 was the phone most of us had and today it’s enjoying something of a resurgence with people who just want a phone to make and receive calls on. Back then capturing your night out meant having to take a camera out in town, which I can’t remember seeing anyone do until I rocked up in 1999 with a camera and from that our ever popular Paparazzi pages were born. Camera phones weren’t readily available until 2002 and I must’ve taken thousands of

was busy trying to carve out a football writer / broadcaster career to pay too much notice to the magazine until spring the following year and that was when I wrote my first column. It was called ‘Been There, Done That’ and at 24 years of age I guess I thought the title of my monthly scribe was quite apt, since I’d been going out into town every weekend night since I was 17. But in the months that followed it became clear that I’d only just scratched the surface and there were plenty more weekend experiences for me still to explore. Before long I’d changed the title to ‘Man About Town’ and although I and the ‘town’ have moved on a bit

MY

WORD OF THE MONTH

PRESENTS Please, I don’t want any this Christmas. Here’s just a few of the gifts I received last year, most of which went to a car boot in January: a wallet (it wasn’t even leather), slippers (the kind my grandad used to wear), a fountain pen (I’m not Charles Dickens), a swear box (what a ****ing waste of money), a coaster set with my birthdate on them (like I want to be reminded of my age), Playboy logo cufflinks (how tacky) and a Slazenger deodorant set (I have no words).

Keep Your Cool This Yule It’s national Anger Awareness Week from December 1 and couples in particular will be stressing at one another over the strain Christmas often brings to a relationship. Of course, it’s always the fault of us blokes that we get annoyed in the first place and of course we’re to blame for ruining Christmas. So, in the spirit of the festive season I’ve compiled a list of situations that we mustn't get angry at when they occur. We must instead take a deep breath, count to 10 and be grateful for how lucky we are to have her in the first place. Don’t get annoyed at her when: •

She’s invited her mum over Boxing Day and New Year’s Day because Christmas Day wasn’t enough of a gesture

She bought herself a £200 bottle of perfume from your joint bill-paying account when all you treated yourself to was a Terry’s Chocolate Orange

She spent a fortune on high end gift wrapping paper and tags even though presents are torn open in complete savage abandon with no appreciation for how they’re wrapped

She wanted a real tree but won’t vacuum the needles

She’s spent a fortune on a dress, fake tan, getting her hair and nails done just so her Facebook photos look like she’s having a fabulous Christmas

Pretend Happy Relationships Online? Relationship charity Relate has revealed that 42% of millennials pretend their relationship is happier than it actually is on Facebook and Instagram. They give the impression their relationship is perfect just for attention and some feel pressured to display success for fear of coming across as unsuccessful. Others want to believe things are going well and will post a positive image to help convince themselves that things are fine. There’s some truth in all this but thankfully I’m not one of the pretend generation. If you think I’m genuinely unhappy with my relationship with food in this photo I posted then someone please book me into therapy.

You Do What?! It’s Christmas and this means too much booze makes you fall out with your inlaws. Standard. It also means you’re likely to discover something your other half has never shared with you before; like she’s had 72 lovers before you met or she regularly uses your razor. Those two examples are

standard too. But what you might also find out (hopefully after you’ve eaten) is that she shaves her toes. A friend, who shall obviously remain nameless, works at Champneys and told me how more and more of her female clients are opening up to having to remove unwanted hair from their pinkies.

There shouldn’t be any secrets between two people in love and Christmas is a time for embracing that love. So, pour the wine and get intimate with one another. The only thing you should be kept in the dark about is planning surprises. That’s my relationship counselling done for another festive season.

TICKETS FOR TONY Widely regarded as one of the most popular men in boxing, Tony ‘The Bomber’ Bellew is coming to Peterborough this month. The former cruiserweight champion of the world will be at The Solstice on the afternoon (12 noon) of February 17 and only a handful of tickets to see the Liverpudlian remain. Bellew is most recently remembered for destroying David Haye and another of his fine performances was as an actor in the first sequel to the Rocky film series – Creed – where he defeated the son of Apollo Creed. He’ll be joining boxing fans for lunch before discussing his career and taking questions. Bellew is the latest boxing star brought to our city by promoter Kevin Sanders. To grab the last batch of tickets, call Kevin on: 07872 601467.

Ramblewood Inn Gin Menu

When it comes to a gin tasting event, inviting the ESP team could be a dangerous move. The editor has always been a big fan – well before it became remotely trendy – and likes

to lead from the front. Slowly but surely more and more of the team have been converted and so when manager Andy Hewson at the Ramblewood Inn announced they now had an expanded range of gins he thought we should know about – 27 no less – the computer keyboards suddenly went quiet and there was a queue at the bar! Andy is rightly proud of their amazing array of gins and our host for the night was his resident expert Brittney who proved she knows her stuff when it comes to the tipple and was the perfect host. We worked our way through as many as we could on what proved to be a tough task (yes really, really arduous!) in a bid to try and choose a favourite. The Adnams Copper House was a hit as was the Zymurgorium Sweet Violet Gin which tastes like tuck shop favourite parma violets (remember

Jazz Bar Events 18 www.espmag.co.uk

those!) but it’s oh so nice! The Mombasa Club Strawberry Edition had the thumbs up as did the Monkey 47... or was it the Peaky Blinders Spiced Gin…things were getting blurry! To keep our stamina up (and to keep us sober) we were served some delicious food including a Ramblewood Sharing Tower (£13.95) of snacks like ribs, wings and fries, a tasty burger and vegetarian Jackfruit Tacos (£13.25). We’re pleased to hear there’ll be more gins on their way to the Ramblewood Inn with a summer gin festival in the pipeline and a fresh gin menu – they’ll update the selection keeping the favourites but replacing any less popular ones with new and exciting flavours. In the meantime there’s the small matter of Christmas of course and the pub’s festive carvery is available from December 1 – 24 and December 27 – 30 with two courses priced £15.95 and three courses at £19.95. They’re also serving lunches on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day so if you don’t fancy slaving over the oven, let their chefs do it for you and book in quick on 01733 391111.

“This year’s event was the culmination of months of planning and the collective hard work and vision of a large number of dedicated individuals, businesses and organisations. Thank you to everyone involved and all who came out to party. “We want to build on this phenomenal success and would love to hear from anyone who would like to be a part in making this amazing event happen – especially those with skills and experience in ‘making things

paparazzi o r t e RCaught in the act? Retro Paparazzi We think when Pep Cipriano, ESP’s Man About Town, headed into town with his camera back in 1999 we were the first to start capturing you all in the act of having a great night out. It was a time long before smartphones had arrived and we’ve got the snaps to prove it! Every weekend our Paparazzi crew were out an about at everything from pub and club nights, live music gigs, parties, balls and outdoor events and we’ve gathered a huge archive over the last 20 years. We’ve grabbed a random selection – can you spot yourself from back in the day?! If you can, let us know. You can see all of our Paparazzi photos on our Facebook page.

Sarah Tempest

ESP’s very own wannabe Spice Girl Sarah Tempest says it’s time to spice up your life and celebrate with the return of her fave band and 20 years of ESP magazine…

W

hat a year 1998 was! Titanic became the first movie to gross $1billion, The Good Friday Agreement was signed, Geri left the Spice Girls and, paling those events into insignificance, Peterborough’s Premier Local Monthly Magazine, was launched. Fast forward 20 years and, glossing over Irish politics and Kate Winslet’s boobs, ESP is still celebrating everything that’s fabulous about our ‘boro, shining a beacon on what’s on, what’s hot and steering us skilfully away from what’s most definitely not; and the Spice Girls are back, swinging it, shaking it, moving it and making it after announcing a huge comeback UK tour, helping us to really kick our birthday celebrations off in style!

...the Spice Girls are back, swinging it, shaking it, moving it...

But although Geri is back in the fold and doubtless working on a more couture version of the infamous Union Jack tea towel dress, The Spice Girls will

28 www.espmag.co.uk

still be performing as a four piece band as, due to her business commitments, Posh Spice Victoria Beckham will not be joining them although she supports them 100%. “Being in the Spice Girls was a hugely important part of my life and I wish my girls so much love and fun as they go back on tour,” she says, “I know they will put on an amazing show and the fantastic fans past and present are going to have a wonderful time!” And you know, she’s right. Because after years in the closet, I’m out and proud and finally not ashamed to admit that I am, in fact, a fully fledged Girl Power t-shirt wearing, special edition collectors tin (with green VHS cassette) ‘Spiceworld The Movie owning, redhaired Ginger Spice Wannabe (see what I did there?), original Spice Girls fan. I even have a limited edition Spice Girls Impulse body spray somewhere although, on second thoughts, maybe admitting to that in public is a step too far. I’ve seen them in 1999 as a four piece without Gezza, and again with the full compliment of Spices at the O2 in 2008 to celebrate my hen night. The show was electric, me and my besties zig a zig aahd at the tops of our voices, my mate Robyn started a Mexican Wave of all 20,000 people in the auditorium (a claim to fame she’s still proud of!) an I had my photo taken, (L plates, willy deely-

boppers and all) with five hairy blokes in full Spice Girls drag (get me drunk at the ESP 20th birthday party and I might just show you!). It was a GREAT night! And now, 10 years on, I’m desperate to make it a hat trick and introduce my little girls, the next generation of Spice fans, to the magic world of Girl Power. Although I’ll leave the willy deeley-boppers at home this time… It’ll be interesting to see the show with this particular line-up as, although she didn’t exactly overwhelm with her vocal ability, the biggest reception of the night at the O2 was reserved for Victoria Beckham who was greeted with cheers and screaming every time there was a ‘Posh’ close up on the stage’s big screen. Not that the girls are worried of course. They’re just as excited as the rest of us that they’re back: “I’ve said it sooo many times I’m beside myself it’s actually happening yipppeeee,” says Mel B, “I’m now properly screaming it from every rooftop – me and my girls will see you all on stage!!” And Geri agrees – “I am so excited, together we celebrate girl power with our fans and the next generation and everyone is welcome! [Ha Is Ja!] Hold tight it's gonna be fun!” It sure will! There may have been countless breakups, 2 divorces, 12 kids, 3 line ups – but ESP has been there through it all. And as Girl Power gives way to People Power (a very 2018 makeover) and the next generation of Spice Girls fans say they’ll be there, we’ll still be there, setting off a Mexican Wave of our own and bringing the party to the people of Peterborough. So welcome back Spice Girls – and Happy Birthday and Viva Forever ESP!

AQUAMAN Cast: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman Director: James Wan With DC Comics’ superhero stable treading water after the ho-hum response to both Justice League and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – Jason Momoa’s Aquaman hopes to stop the Universe from drowning as the franchise resurfaces with this actionadventure. Sandwiched in between was Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and if

early feedback is to go by, this could receive similar critical acclaim – as Momoa’s Arthur Curry learns he is heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. But as he steps forward to lead his people, his half-brother ‘Ocean Master’ Orm (Patrick Wilson) stands in his way – as Aquaman aims to be a hero to the world on both land and at sea.

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET: WRECK-IT RALPH 2

CREED II

This sequel to the muchloved 2012 original sees best buddies Ralph (John C Reilly) and Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) on a new adventure after discovering a Wi-Fi router in their arcade – that sucks them into the zany realms of the Internet. Expect multiple nods to cartoon and gaming legends as Disney looks to dominate the animated market over Christmas.

This sequel to the 2015 surprise hit is actually more like a follow-up to Rocky IV as light heavyweight contender Adonis Creed (Michael B Jordan) – under the tutelage of Oscarnominee Sylvester Stallone’s Balboa – faces off against Viktor Drago, the son of Rocky’s arch-nemesis Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), the man who killed Adonis’ father Apollo in the ring.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS

HOLMES & WATSON

BUMBLEBEE

Decades after her original visit, the magical nanny Mary Poppins – Emily Blunt taking over from the legendary Julie Andrews – returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael’s (Ben Whisaw) children through a difficult time in their lives. Meryl Streep and Colin Firth join an all-star cast in Disney’s musical-fantasy sequel that’s garnering good early word-of-mouth.

Will Ferrell and John C Reilly play the iconic roles – giving a more humorous take on the legend recently seen with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. This mystery action-comedy – helmed by the writer/producer behind Tropic Thunder – sees the famed literary characters use their brilliant minds to try and stop Ralph Fiennes’ James Moriarty from assassinating the Queen.

Hopefully this prequel from the Transformers Universe is better received than the woeful last few franchise outings – as the battlescarred ‘robot in disguise’ VW bug finds refuge in a small 1987-set Californian beach town after being discovered by Hailee Steinfeld’s Charlie. Ex-WWE Champion John Cena (Blockers) stars as the agent in hot pursuit of the alien robot.

LEGO DC SUPERVILLAINS (PS4/X1/NSW)

(X1/PS4/PC)

This bold effort from the acclaimed creators of the Fallout series is an extremely tough game to review – because it takes hours of open world gaming to scratch the surface. Bethesda has launched a multiplayer version of the iconic franchise that can still be played as a solo experience, set in the distinct Appalachian region of West Virginia in 2102 – twenty five years after the bombs fall. Sadly at launch it is littered with bugs – but is continually patched – and maybe should have been delayed, but it still retains a lot of what made Fallout 4 great, and like Bungie’s Destiny series, could still evolve into something special, despite it being a sometimes empty wastelands experience as it stands at the moment.

Even though this doesn’t reinvent the tried and tested Lego gaming wheel – props has to be given for a uniquely different take on the popular franchise from the DC Comics Universe. After the Justice League gets banished, a group of wannabe superheroes from a parallel universe – known as the Justice Syndicate – offer themselves as the Earth’s protectors, and it’s then left to a group of crazed misfits to uncover their intentions, with an engaging storyline that offers up a little bit more ingenuity than usual. Said misfits come in the zany form of The Joker, Harley Quinn, Riddler, Lex Luthor and co, as a dark and comedic playground opens up that truly reaffirms the analogy: It’s good to be bad. And my son loves it!

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

I have been writing this column for quite some time now and it’s a pleasure to do so. I’ve grown up with ESP magazine. When I was younger (and when I say younger, I mean between 19-24 when I was hardcore enough to go ‘out out’), I always picked up a copy to read whilst frequenting the Brewery Tap and I would imagine a lot of other pub goers did the same.

W

hilst technology has evolved (and I congratulate ESP on moving with the times with their website), there is still very much a place in the city and beyond for the magazine format and that is testament to the work of Sharon and her team. It is without doubt an achievement to survive so long and I’m sure they will continue to thrive. Makes you think though, 20 years. Long old time is that. Twenty years ago I was 16-years-old and heading to college. In those twenty years the magazine has created fresh content, competitions and kept the reader very much in the know of what is going on in this fine city of ours.

Photos: www.theposh.com

During that time, Posh have been promoted to the Championship twice, won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and gone through about 20 different managers. The club has changed ownership, the ground has changed ownership and Mark Tyler has retained exactly the same hairstyle. In fact, ESP magazine has probably been the only consistent performer in the last 20 years!

them a Happy Birthday and hope they go for 20 more years!”

I have been at the football club for 17 years, my Director of Football Barry Fry is older than the magazine. He was full of praise for the achievement. “Twenty years is a very long time. I moved to Peterborough a few years before ESP Magazine was born and they have enjoyed our successes at the football club. I wish

We have a lot to look forward to both as a football club and as a city.

I hope Sharon gets a bit more time and space to enjoy ‘life’ rather than be at the helm in twenty more years but if anyone can, Sharon can. We have a lot to look forward to both as a football club and as a city. Developments are taking shape all over the place and as we approach the festive period, hopefully dreams can come true on realising our aim of redeveloping the ABAX Stadium as owners rather than tenants. Football doesn’t stop at Christmas, nor should it. I hope you all enjoy the time with your families and most importantly the food. We have plenty to look forward to in the New Year, on and off the pitch, in both the football world and the music world. Seven days in football can be a long time!

Christmas

in the City

ESP has teamed up with Peterborough City Council’s City Services and Communications department to bring you our guide to making the most of the festivities in the city from shopping to recycling…

Test the Market If you’re a budding entrepreneur then trial your business for free. Peterborough City Market is giving you the chance to save more than £600 by taking up a free stall over the festive season. You may already be selling products or services in your spare time or have a business idea you want to test on the public. Either way, the market is the perfect place for you to test your idea – and it’s for free! The market is especially interested to hear from people wanting to trade in retro clothing, home furnishings, upcycled products, homemade arts and crafts, and businesses that are not in direct competition with existing stallholders. Several traders were successful in previous trial promotions and have become permanent stallholders. These include: Victoria's Sponge House, Here We Aren't music merchandise, ZeroZero Pizzas, The Italian Twist and Remstone Kitchen. Markets and commercial trading officer Steve Woolley told ESP: “The market has experienced something of a resurgence this last year where new exciting traders have arrived and footfall is increasing.” Businesses who are a success and stay on receive a 20 per cent saving in their rent for the first month, social media support and a free promotional video after three months. For more information about the free trial, email market@peterborough.gov.uk or call: 01733 454454.

Register for 2019 Perkins Great Eastern Run Most of us will be overindulging in food and drink during the festive season and then making a New Year resolution to diet and keep fit. It’ll soon be time to set your mind to getting a little healthier and you can’t beat a goal to give you some inspiration. The city’s half marathon is flat and fast, which means it’s perfect for seasoned runners to achieve their personal best time and ideal for first-time participants who don’t have to worry about navigating any hills! You can register your interest for the 2019 event and be notified when entries open. This year’s half marathon saw more UK runners finish inside 70 minutes than any other half marathon in the country, including the Great North Run and Cardiff Half Marathon. First female across the line, Amy Clements, registered the fastest winning time by a female UK runner in a UK half marathon. Winner Lucian Allison clocked 65 minutes and 27 seconds, which was quicker than his personal best by over two minutes. More than 2,000 runners entered the race for the first time this year – next time it could be you! To pre-register, visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk.

Keep Calories on Track Throughout the festive season it’s really not as hard as you think to keep an eye on what you’re eating and drinking. The One You apps are here to help. Download the One You Easy Meals app for a great way to find recipes that are healthier for you. And cut back on the booze with the One You Drink Free Days. As well as making healthier food and drink choices, remember to keep active to help to burn off some of the additional calories indulged in over Christmas. Recycle your Christmas Tree

Festive Hamper up for Grabs!

The tree is the centrepiece of your decorations but at some point – and come the twelfth night – it’s time to send your Norway spruce or Nordmann fir off for mulching. Christmas trees can be taken to the Householders Recycling Centre (HRC) in Dogsthorpe. It’s open seven days a week from 8am to 4pm, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. It will close at 12 noon on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Alternatively, if you pay for you brown bin to be emptied you can chop your real tree up and pop it in there. Brown bin collections resume during week commencing January 15 alongside your scheduled recycling bin collection. All real trees put in brown bins or taken to the HRC will be turned into compost, which is a valuable soil improver, which means you’ll be at the top of Santa’s Christmas pressie list for next year!

Be sure to get your fresh Christmas dinner veggies and stocking-filler gifts from the City Market and they’ll enter you into a prize draw to win a hamper full of goodies. Once you buy an item from one of the many stalls you’ll be given an entry form to fill in and pop into one of the prize draw boxes located throughout the market. You can enter as many times as you like until the closing date on Thursday December 20. If you win it will be delivered to you by the Mayor of Peterborough. Leading up to Christmas Day, the market will be open as normal – Tuesday to Saturday from 8.30am until 4pm. The market will also be open on Sunday December 23 from 10am to 4pm and on Christmas Eve from 8.30am to 4pm. The market will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Thursday December 27.

Donate to Safer Off The Streets A homeless person’s life expectancy can decrease by 30 years, that’s why 19 organisations and voluntary groups from around the city are working together to get people off the streets for good, rather than sustain their lifestyle on it. The partnership, called Safer off the Streets, has set up a number of initiatives to empower residents to help. Donations, however big or small, make a real difference to homeless and vulnerable people in Peterborough. It’s been made easy to donate money online, at cash donation points and a tap and donate contactless window at Argo Lounge, knowing your money is being used the right way to get rough sleepers off the streets for good. Donations will go towards a new dedicated drop in hub at The Garden House in Wheel Yard, which is open six days a week. It provides much needed support – including GP and health advice, housing guidance, volunteering activities, CV preparation and job search advice. Outreach officers will also work with individuals to offer personalised plans to support them off the streets. For more information, visit www.saferoffthestreets.co.uk.

Parking made Easier this Christmas Getting parked up for Christmas shopping and a spot of retail therapy in the January sales has got a little easier. There are 11 city council car parks around the city centre and you can park for just £4 a day in Wellington Street, Pleasure Fair and Wirrina car parks. Plus, there are two car parks at Sand Martin House on the new Fletton Quays development. You can use debit and credit card payments in all council car parks. Or even go completely mobile with the RingGo app. It’s quick and secure… just register! The best bit is you can then top-up your parking time without having to return to your car, so when you’re stuck in a queue or just fancy staying on for one more gingerbread latté there’s no need to panic! You can register for RingGo by calling 01733 808551 or visit www.peterborough.gov.uk/residents/parking/ parking-charges.

Bin Collection Days Change By the end of the year you’ll be stacked high with used wrapping paper, packaging and things to be recycled – so make sure you don’t miss your bin days. Black and green bin days alter between Christmas and New Year and remember to put your food bin out for collection with the appropriate bin on the days shown below. Normal collection day:

HEalTH and beauty ESP’s Rachael Church has all the latest health and beauty news…

rachael.church@espmag.co.uk

It’s my favourite time of year. Christmas is here! And for beauty lovers, there’s so much choice for Christmas presents, where do you even start? Here is what’ll be on my Christmas list this year, all from local Peterborough stores.

raCHaEl’S BEauTy CHriSTmaS liST Dear Santa... I’ve tried my hardest to be a good girl this year. I’ve taken my makeup off before bed (most of the time), I’ve eaten less sweet foods (minus my 30th birthday celebrations, there were a lot of cakes that week), and I’ve treated my hands and feet to manicures and pedicures whenever my budget will allow it. So, in return for this good behaviour, I would love….

EvEnT To imProvE your rESiliEnCE On January 10 at the Holiday Inn Thorpe Wood, there’s a free event taking place which sounds great. Celynn Morin is a brilliant keynote speaker, dietician, author and French foodie. She started her business in South Africa and is now based in the UK. She’ll be discussing the skills needed to enhance your performance at work, and resilience skills – so that time poor, stress rich individuals shift from feeling stressed, tired and sick to feeling energised, balanced and well. Sounds great to me – I’ll be there. Find out more details on Eventbrite.

a BaByliss Elegance Hair Dryer Where from: Boots How much: £26.66 (on offer at the moment) Why I love it: Err, it’s that amazing rose gold colour and would look great on my cabinet. But also, it has an ultra-fast drying mechanism, which is great when you have long hair. Plus, it releases conditioning ions to stop frizz and enhance shine!

Clarins one minute make-up Heroes gift Set Where from: John Lewis How much: £27.50 Why I love it: This set is such good value for money with two different primers, a super volume mascara, and lip perfector in a rose shimmer colour. So after a few late nights at Christmas this will get you looking radiant in time for New Year’s Eve.

Hand Cream Crackers Where from: The Body Shop How much: £25 Why I love it: I’m one of those people that has a hand cream on my work desk, another in my handbag, one on the bedside cabinet at home, need I go on… So this set will get me set for the whole year. Six different flavours – mango, British rose, moringa, strawberry, shea and pink grapefruit. Yes please! And if you think I’ve been really really good, a spa day for one in January would be really nice! Xxxxx 36 www.espmag.co.uk

ESP’S ToP TiPS For STaying HEalTHy THiS CHriSTmaS Staying healthy over the Christmas break is a fullon task with so many sweet treats and late nights – so take some time to think how you can de-stress and look after yourself. •

Keep your exercise routine to a steady minimum that’s right for you – enough to keep you feeling healthy. Plan a mini home work out to do every day if you like.

Christmas means more alcohol-fuelled parties than normal, so drinking plenty of water will help you counteract the dehydrating effects on our skin and body.

Christmas celebrations can play havoc with your sleep patterns, so try to keep on top of your sleep routine – 7 hours minimum most nights!

If you can, set aside 10 minutes a day to do nothing – that means think about nothing as well. Some time out, away from the stresses, just to breathe.

Well Being Karen Devine’s

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

Stay fit not frazzled this festive season! It’s that crazy Christmas season once again – it seems only a few months since we were finishing off the remainder of last year’s Christmas foods, pulling down the decorations and dreading getting on the scales after all the indulgences! f course we can all say no to the mince pies or make healthier swaps such as enjoying some dark chocolate over the handfuls of Celebrations. Most people know what they ‘should’ be doing however, many throw in the towel half way through and over indulge anyway!

O

So I’m not going to be Bah Humbug about what not to eat, I’m just going to pass on a few tips to help you stay happy and healthier this Christmas… SLEEP – try to get to bed 1 hour earlier a few nights during the Christmas period. Switch off all the gadgets/wireless, I can’t believe how many people leave these on and say they don’t get a good night’s sleep! Have a bit of air coming in and aim for 7-8 hours or a little more during winter if possible. Parties and stress are not a good combination for productive sleep and sleep deprivation can lead to a weakened immune system, weight gain, inflammation, mood swings and more. HYDRATION – this is so important to keep your energy and blood sugar stable, reduce food cravings (many times it’s a call of dehydration), clear your foggy brain, lessen joint pains, improve digestion and much more. Alcohol/coffee/tea – all dehydrate as well as all the concentrated animal protein, carbohydrates etc so think hydration over winter! GET OUTDOOR EXERCISE – wrap up and get outdoors, go to the woods/forest or seaside to breathe in as much of nature as you can. Or take a power walk or stroll around the block. They can release those feel- good chemicals, aid in sleep, strengthen the cardiovascular system and more. INTERMITTENT FASTING – basically stop eating so much and allow intermittent days during the Christmas period to reduce your calorie intake. I prefer for my own clients to make a juice or smoothie/salad which brings vitamins/minerals/enzymes and of course the most natural water from nature. Or try some

38 www.espmag.co.uk

light veggie broths and steamed veg. There are many ways to work with intermittent fasting which includes the well known 5:2 or 4:3 which allows you to eat normally for 4 or 5 days then fast for 2 or 3. You can also look at fasting daily for 12-14-16 hours (this includes sleep and most of us do 12 hours anyway so this can be stretched if you are able for longer). This is personal so work with what suits you and your health needs. DITCH ALL ANIMAL PROTEIN FOR A DAY (or 2) – have a plant rich diet day in amongst all the animal protein consumed at Christmas. Animal protein is very acidic, hard on the digestion and can be mucous forming. Have some days where you can enjoy beans/lentils, nuts/seeds, quinoa, sweet potatoes, coconut yoghurts, veggie curries/shepherds pie etc, you’ll be surprised at how satisfying it is. IT’S OK TO SAY NO – you don’t have to go to every invite you get, check in with yourself, if it doesn’t feel like you really want to be there and you’re going because you feel you have to then maybe give it a miss. A night in with a hot bath, movie or a book will do you more good than dragging yourself out. TAKE A SUPPLEMENT – this is not something I recommend very often, I don’t like using multi vitamin/mineral unless there is an absolute need for it; most people pop these like Smarties thinking they’re doing them good when in actual fact they’re doing nothing. You can manipulate food to bring far greater bioavailable minerals into your diet by making them more concentrated such as in smoothies/juices. However, when you are over taxing your digestion, adrenal glands and body in general with the excess of sugar, alcohol and late nights then a good B vitamin as well as vitamin C, D and minerals such as magnesium could really give you support through the festive fun and help avoid winter colds/flu.

DE-STRESS – Our nervous system is over stimulated most of the time today in our modern world without the added pressures of Christmas. We need to make this a priority in our lives. When we hydrate, nourish our body, sleep well, take exercise and retreat from the outside world from time to time it helps to relax the ‘fight or flight’ response which triggers a whole cascade of physical responses in the body. Cortisol which is the stress hormone in excess can increase inflammation, diminish our digestive juices, affect male and female hormonal balance, cause fatigue, emotional outbursts and much more. Nature can help reduce the load on the nervous system and switching off the TV, radio and having some quiet time can also really help. Happy Christmas, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

h g i H g n i y l F s ’ Darren If you ever fancied yourself as a pilot, or already have flying skills you want to improve, or just want to know what goes on in the cockpit when you're flying to your next holiday destination, I found just the place toget your wings from, and I went down to try it for myself.

J

et Sim flight school are based in Orton Southgate, and offer true-to-life flight simulator experiences for oneoff gifts or ongoing training towards actually becoming a real pilot. The simulator is a very highspec copy of a real Boeing 737800, and it’s not just for show either. Every button, switch and fiddly thing actually works just like in the real plane, you can even turn the seat belt signs on and off! After an initial briefing on our flight plan, I was taken to the cockpit and was surprised at just how realistic it was as I entered the plane from the side, passing several rows of passenger seats just like on a real plane, only this time I headed to the cockpit. My captain, helped me get sat down and adjust my seat into position, surrounded by hundreds of buttons, switches, toggles and thingamajigs. The pressure was on, but I was patiently guided through

40 www.espmag.co.uk

the sea of gadgets and displays, and it slowly started to become clear. The instructor was fantastic, he walked me through the controls, explaining in detail everything I needed to do. Then

“” The simulator is a very high-spec copy of a real Boeing 737- 800, and it’s not just for show either.

we got ready to take off, I was in control, following instructions as we sped along the runway and then when the time was right, I pulled back on the controls and pointed our nose to the air. We flew from Stansted, one thing I was surprised to learn was that the weather we encountered was real-time. We were flying in the exact conditions that the real pilots were flying through at that

time. This means no two flights will ever be quite the same; we hit some strong side winds, a bit of turbulence and even snow. I successfully managed a touchand-go manoeuvre where we landed on the runway, then took off again without stopping. By this point I was steering this fantastic machine with only my left hand, while controlling the speed with the right, and had an appreciation for the real pilots and the thousands of hours of flight time they have to put in before they take a real flight. It certainly puts your mind at ease knowing just how much control and training pilots have, which makes this a great experience for nervous flyers too! The Jet Sim flight simulator is a great experience and would make a fantastic gift idea, they provide gift vouchers for just such an occasion and I can’t imagine anyone being disappointed finding this under the tree at Christmas! www.jetsimschool.co.uk

HOW TO BE

ON THE

SAVVY

SLOPES

The first phase has just been completed of Tallington Lakes’ new development. Phase one is a new nursery slope which has been re-shaped and resurfaced with a new artificial surface ready for this winter. Phase two and three will be completed in 2019; which will see the main slope re-shaped and resurfaced, followed by a new freestyle area for skiers and snowboarders.

I

f you’re planning your first hols Tallington Lakes not only has plenty of areas to practice, an expert boot fitting service and a shop stocked with great kit, they also have a team who really know their stuff. We decided to pick the brains of Lotti Christie, their Chief Ski Instructor who actually learnt to ski at Tallington Lakes when she was just 4 years-old! She also teaches snowboarding and is a boot fitter and is about to go to France to do a ski season. If you're a first time skier/snowboarder where would you recommend? “If you’re travelling as an individual or couple then the Three Valleys in France offers a

With plenty of ski area offering great runs from beginners through to advanced, there’s even a park to keep the adrenaline running and the little ones entertained.” What should you look for to choose wisely? “It all depends on what you’re looking for, it’s always good to look at what colour runs are on offer in that area, because as a beginner you don’t want to turn up and find most of the runs are reds and blacks. It’s also good to look at how big the ski area is because you may get bored doing the same runs every day, whereas somewhere like the Three Valleys has a lot more to offer. It’s also good to look at what the town has in the evenings – depending on who you are going with you may want somewhere quieter or somewhere with a bit more nightlife.”

The new nursery slope at Tallington Lakes everything for you so if you’re taking small children away this is probably the easiest way to make the most out of your holiday as you won’t have to stress.”

“”

Should you go for a package or book things individually? “Booking things individually can sometimes work out cheaper, however if this is your first time it can be overwhelming and confusing. Package deals are great as the companies are well informed about the best offers and will have all the answers to your questions. They also arrange

I would always recommend having lessons before you go as this way you aren’t stuck on the nursery slopes... Is it wise/essential to have some lessons first? “I would always recommend having lessons before you go as this way you aren’t stuck on the nursery slopes for the first couple of days. Learning before you go means you can get way more out of your holiday! There are a couple of options when learning in the UK; an indoor snow dome will give you more

of a feel for snow however these can be pricey compared to a dry slope like Tallington Lakes where lessons are considerably cheaper. Although dry slopes can be harder to ski on it only means your technique will be better and it’ll be much easier when you get on the real snow.” How physically fit do you need to be? “You don’t have to be an experienced athlete, anyone and everyone can ski! Having lessons prior to going will also help you understand what level of fitness is needed as your muscles will ache after a day on the mountain. A great exercise to practice at home while watching TV is called the wall sit; your back is flat against a

S

If you’re planning your first ski or snowboard holiday you’ve probably considered lessons at Tallington Lakes. wall and your legs are at 90°, hold this for as long as you can. This will help build muscle stamina for skiing.” Ski wear isn't cheap so what do you really need as a novice? “Socks, gloves and thermals! Getting cold can ruin a day on the mountain so having a good quality pair of ski socks, and gloves with a DWR coating can help keep your extremities warm and dry. Thermals have come on a long way since the days of skiing in cotton turtle necks, technology now allows for thinner, more stretch, more comfort and less smelly base layers. Anything with Merino wool is sure to be a good buy, it’s soft against the skin, naturally regulates body temperature thanks to its wicking properties and doesn’t smell half as much as other materials.”

What are essential bits of kit and what are the items you can do without? “Apart from your obvious ski wear, I would always recommend to everyone that they wear a helmet. You may be the world’s best skier but an accident doesn’t always have to be your fault so don’t forget

your helmet! You don’t need to go too fancy and have all the latest gadgets or filming devices, just keep it simple and don’t blow your budget on items you’ll probably never use.”

Should you have a ski boot fitting before you go or will you be OK to do it at the resort? “If you’re just using rental boots a boot fit is not essential however it may be useful to get an idea of how the boots should feel and fit. If you’re a seasoned skier I would definitely recommend investing in your own boots, as you will find your overall enjoyment and skiing will improve.” What are the main mistakes people make when it comes to ski/snowboard holidays? “Waiting to buy equipment when you get out to the resort. DON’T! It’s way more expensive, even little items like socks or gloves. Get them before you go so at least you know you have them and don’t have to pay more because you are a captive audience.”

The Best Comedy Books of 2018 The ESP Comedy Guide

sarah.slack@espmag.co.uk

Sarah Slack brings us the ESP guide to where the laughs are at this month…

A

nother year, another seasonal shopping list for relatives, partners and Secret Santas! If you’re seeking the perfect gift this Christmas a consistent option has always been a laugh out loud read, so to help you wade through the fictitious filler here are some of 2018’s best comedy books:

Jo Brand: Born Lippy Described as ‘feisty and funny’ by the Sunday Express, this new book comes from the writer of social worker comedy Damned and the host of the Great British Bake Off’s spin off show An Extra Slice. Promising a step by step guide on tackling subjects such as social media, staying sane, and societal expectations of femininity, Jo Brand takes stock of exactly what it means to be female for a motivational and inspirational read.

A Trip to Blackpool’s Comedy Carpet Last month I decided to venture outside of Peterborough and have a weekend away in Blackpool to see the famous illuminations, however alongside the amazing lights and ballroom dances, one of the highlights of my trip was its fantastic comedy carpet attraction which features and celebrates songs, quotes, and catchphrases from the country’s favourite comedians. Located opposite Blackpool Tower the comedy carpet has been a

permanent fixture since 2011 and truly is a walk of fame for the best of British comedy. As a proclaimed comedy nerd I spent many hours here just simply walking up and down finding my favourites – Morecambe & Wise, Blackadder, Vic & Bob, the list goes on! I would therefore thoroughly recommend a trip to Blackpool thanks to this free attraction, however the chip supper from Yorkshire Fisheries was also pretty good too.

Christmas Comedy Nights Listings are looking a bit slim this month thanks to the onslaught of office Christmas parties, however if you fancy a laugh in between conquering the high street this season then here are two options for you… In Peterborough the Lightbox Café will be hosting a comedy night during that weird period between Christmas and New Year, therefore it’s a good reason to leave the house and abandon the leftover Quality Street. Taking place on Thursday December 27 at 8.30pm, performing this month will be American comic Russell Hicks plus Scottish stand-up Stephen Carlin, who’s previously appeared on Comedy Central’s The Alternative Comedy Experience. Tickets available by visiting www.funhousecomedy.co.uk. For Stamford residents there’s also another comedy night happening on Friday December 7 at the Arts Centre. Headlining will be Rahul Kohli, who’s best known for mixing cutting-edge topical punchlines with jovial anecdotes, surreal stories and witty political analysis. Plus, you’ll receive £1 off your first drink purchased at the Cellar Bar with every ticket bought, making it an ideal night out this Christmas. Tickets available by calling 01780 763203. 44 www.espmag.co.uk

Taskmaster: 200 Extraordinary Tasks for Ordinary People If you’ve loved the recent series starring James Acaster and (spoiler alert) winner Kerry Godliman, then you’ll love the latest book from the BAFTA nominated TV show. Written by the show’s assistant ‘little’ Alex Horne this book offers 200 incredible tasks to choose from, making it perfect for playing with family members and friends this Christmas.

Romesh Ranganathan: Straight Outta Crawley Entitled his ‘Memoirs of a Distinctly Average Human Being’, this Sunday Times best-seller comes from one of the year’s break-out comedy stars after hosting Judge Romesh and starring in pub sitcom The Reluctant Landlord. This hilarious autobiography covers his previous attempts to make it in comedy as well as his unusual upbringing, for a fascinating insight from one of the hardest working comedians in the country.

O

Funny Brexmus Special

ne of the highlights of my time as an ESP columnist over the years has been my forays into the festive season. Like all the best exponents of Christmas specials on TV I have now reached the stage in my ESP career, where ‘Mostly Funny’ is kept back until Christmas before people can fully enjoy/ignore it like they do with Mrs Brown’s Boys. Who can forget all those classic Christmas specials I’ve written. The one where I gatecrashed a Christmas Party at the

Holiday Inn dressed as James Bond from Moonraker with my 6ft 6” mate JV dressed as Jaws? The one where I got roughed up by a Cyberman from that year’s Dr Who because I accused him of taking a cyberslash up against the Tardis, or the time I ate too much cheese the night before Christmas issue copy deadline day, and ended up dreaming that the Nene Valley Railway’s Santa Special train was made out of Stilton and fuelled by mini-cheddars?

This year, in keeping with the magazine’s 20th anniversary I wanted to pay tribute to the Peterborough City Centre light-switch on ceremony. An annual event that brings a mixture of joy and annoyance into the hearts and fingertips of all Peterborians (if social media is anything to go by). The futuristic silver baubled £40K Christmas tree continues to divide opinion since it was first used in 2015 as does the choice of ‘celebrity’ who switches it on. The nadir of this during my time with ESP surely has to be in 2003 when Eastenders’ actor James Alexandrou (Martin Fowler) did the honours and was roundly booed in Cathedral Square. Hardly surprising if you remember that a year earlier on Christmas Day 2002 Martin Fowler had killed one of the show’s best loved characters (Jamie Mitchell). The BBC screened it right before that year’s Only Fools & Horses Christmas Special (the one they went on a booze cruise to France, and came back with an illegal immigrant ‘Gary’ who’d snuck in the back of Denzel’s lorry). In an alternative universe THAT’S who should’ve turned on the 2003 Peterborough Christmas Lights! Meanwhile for Christmas 2018 I really think the organisers missed a trick by not asking local businesswoman Khadija Kalifa (who’s been starring in 2018’s The Apprentice) to bring along Alan Sugar, Claude Littner and Karen Brady. It would have…. (OK, that’s enough of this nonsense… You’re Fired – the Ed)

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene… Proudly sponsored by

Keith says... This issue of ESP Magazine celebrates 20 years of publication, and I remember its launch all that time ago. The Editor throughout that period is Sharon McAllister who was a colleague of mine on Lite FM. Sharon decided that Peterborough needed its own magazine which catered for lifestyle and leisure for Peterborough and the surrounding area. I’ve always championed it through my radio shows as I feel it’s an important source of information on the local scene which unfortunately is not available from the larger media outlets. I started writing this Live Music column about 10 years ago because of my love of the local music scene. During that time I’ve been fortunate to meet many of the area’s talented musicians that appear locally. So the Editor asked me for a band highlight to appear in this 20th anniversary edition. I can’t possibly name one performance from one band because that favourite probably changes every few months, and it just wouldn’t be fair to all the others. But then it occurred to me! There was one weekend in March 2015 when most of the local bands and musicians got together at The

Cresset to perform at ‘Pete’s Hootenanny’ with all proceeds going to Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall. The event which lasted Saturday and Sunday was the brainchild of Colin ‘Citizen’ Smith who wanted to celebrate the life of his close friend Pete Thomson. Rather like a local Bob Geldof, Colin started small and then band after band joined the event. I was invited to compere alongside my ESP buddy, Andy Slater. For me it was a very special weekend, with 0898 and The Motivators reforming for that weekend only. Gizz Butt brought the Dizzy Miss Lizzys, Colin Hodgkinson appeared with his electric blues band and classic rock bands like Hooker and Retrolux graced the stage. There was Davidson Watson Gates and The One Eyed Cats. In fact take a look at the poster for the event. It really was the great and the good of the local music scene all together for a special reason, with the added bonus being the camaraderie that everyone showed. Musicians stayed around and reappeared with another band making the whole weekend a huge success.

Smithy was deservedly very proud and he even found time to pick up his guitar and play. There you are, a great live music memory for the 20 years of ESP – and I got away without having to nominate a favourite band! They are all special and I wish them and you a Merry Christmas. Congratulations ESP!

Showcase Thursdays @ The Crown

Live Tunes for New Year’s Eve

I’ve been contacted by local promoter, Terry Narraine, who informs me that they plan a new mid-week initiative at The Crown in New England. It’s due to the enormous success of the live music during weekends in 2018 and the demand to play the venue next year where nearly every weekend date is already fully booked. So the venue’s decided to extend to Thursdays on a trial basis in order to provide a showcase for new covers and original bands wanting to play. The first Showcase Thursday night at The Crown is on December 20, at 8pm, with new Peterborough covers band The Midas Touch making an exciting and anticipated live debut. The band features some of Peterborough's finest and most accomplished musicians – Martin Ferguson from Groove Cartell on vocals, Jesse A. Coleman (ex Rocket Dogs) on lead guitar, Jack Parkinson on bass and Spike T. Smith on drums. You can expect to hear blistering versions of songs from the likes of Prince, Living Colour, Gnarls Barkley, Eurythmics, Rush and Muse – a real cross section of covers! Terry tells me the success of the trial will depend on the demand to play from up-andcoming bands and obviously also the public who attend. So if any bands are interested contact him on 07796 250071 or email terrynarraine@hotmail.co.uk. And don’t forget Thursday December 20 for The Midas Touch!

New Year’s Eve always provides a dilemma of where to go and what to do. Most venues are ticketed for obvious reasons and live music is perhaps not as easy to find as it is the rest of the year. Discos rule the roost on New Year’s Eve, however you can still watch a live band if you book early. I’ve picked out a few that I know about and they’re all ticketed, usually including a few extras. Of course it’s always worth asking your local what they feature. Firstly that all year round live music venue, The Ploughman in Werrington Centre, celebrates its recent good news and New Year’s Eve in style with Children of The Revolution. Tickets include a buffet and you need to order yours on 01733 327696. Over in Stamford, the spectacular One Eyed Cats play at Mama Liz’s and this one includes fizz at midnight, nibbles and fireworks. Tickets are available on 01780 765888. The Crown on Lincoln Road, New England features Rocket 57 and again the ticket price includes a buffet. Phone for tickets on 07415 624262. The Fayre Spot in Bretton has been freshly refurbished recently and they feature The Veltones. It’s also ticket only on 01733 842518. Following a very successful year, Last

48 www.espmag.co.uk

Minute Brigade play in Woodston at The Yard of Ale on Oundle Road. Phone 01733 348000. The Bluebell in Dogsthorpe is going to have a fun night with True British Mayhem. For tickets call 01733 554890. The Dragonfly in Orton Malborne features Velocity fresh from their success at The Beer Festival. For tickets call 01733 230863. The Motor City Vipers always tick the boxes if you like soul and Motown and they’ll be at the Brewery Tap supported by popular local DJ Julian Roberts. You can grab a ticket from the venue for £15 and if you fancy making a real night of it you can enjoy a 2 course Thai buffet for a ticket price of £35. Then over at Charters there’s another strong contender with the ever-popular Dizzy Miss Lizzys who rocked this summer’s Peterborough Beer Fest, fronted by local hero Gizz Butt. The band delivers some great Beatles hits and rock tunes which will bring in 2019 with a bang. Tickets are £10 and are on sale now. Check our Gig Guide in this issue and online on www.espmag.co.uk for more, but whichever gig you decide on, I’d recommend getting your tickets as soon as possible. If you snooze you lose! And you don’t want to do that on New Year’s Eve.

Party on with Wham! and Queen Tributes

There are two great Christmas Party Nights at The Stamford Corn Exchange in December. Both feature music from 80s icons. Firstly, on Saturday December 1 there’s The Best of Wham. A ‘Fantastic’ new show featuring the best of George, Andrew, Pepsi and Shirlie with sensational vocals, choreography, costumes and a live band. Unbelievably it’s 37 years since George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley formed one of the most enduring pop groups of the 80s. The Best of WHAM! show includes all the hits, a few B side favourites and a couple of early George Michael solo hits, which of course began a new era for the singer. But it’s the vibrancy and fun that Wham brought to the stage. I saw them in their heyday at a radio roadshow and the crowd hysteria they created was mind boggling.

They’re followed at The Corn Exchange by internationally renowned Queen tribute band The Bohemians. Such is their popularity that they appear for two nights on Friday December 7 and Saturday December 8 and take you on a high energy roller coaster ride of a concert, featuring the back catalogue of one of the world’s most popular and iconic rock acts of all time. Again, I had the pleasure of seeing Queen live at Hammersmith and the power and stage charisma of Freddie Mercury was apparent then. They went on to be one of the most popular live stage shows, and with so many hits ranging from the early piano and harmony heavy masterpieces, to the later, catchy pop of the eighties and rock anthems of the early nineties. Whether it’s Killer Queen, Crazy Little Thing Called Love or The Show Must Go On, Bohemian Rhapsody or We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, The Bohemians will bring you a truly memorable live re-enactment of the world’s greatest rock band. The party atmosphere is enhanced by the option to include a pre show three course meal in the Theatre Lounge, which is situated in the basement of the Corn Exchange. Which would make a great night out for Christmas. With or without the meal, both these shows can be booked at the box office on 01780 766455. www.espmag.co.uk
