SAFER OFF THE STREETS IS AWARD WINNER It was great to hear that the city’s Safer Off the Streets partnership has won a regional award at the Love Britain and Ireland Awards, organised by Premier Christian Radio. The partnership, which scooped the Best Start-Up category, helps on average two rough sleepers to leave the streets a month since it began in October last year and has raised a whopping £8,000 for charity. Agencies involved in the Safer Off the Streets partnership, include: The Light Project Peterborough, Hope Into Action, Peterborough City Council, Street Pastors, Peterborough Food Bank, YMCA, Safer Peterborough, Citizens Advice Peterborough, The Salvation Army, Veterans for the Homeless, Love & Humanity Peterborough, Kingsgate Community Church, Axiom, Children of Adam and the Peterborough Soup Kitchen. Homelessness is a real   crisis and anyone who wants to pledge their help to rough sleepers in the city are asked to donate money either online, via the contactless card reader in St Peter’s Arcade, or at the cash collection boxes at the Town Hall reception and Visitor Information Centre. The money goes towards the running of the Garden House in the cathedral grounds, which is run by the Light Project Peterborough. The Light Project was also winner of the Community Building category for running the Winter Night Shelter. Hope Into Action won the Social Action category for providing direct support to people whom others have often given up on. And the third partner to receive

recognition was Care Zone within Kingsgate Community Church - winner of the Social Justice category – for Care Zone which has grown from strength to strength and served thousands of people in the community. Sense and Sensibility Summer Shakespeare Summer is here and that means Stamford Shakespeare Company’s Summer Season is well underway with a fantastic season of performances continuing through until August 31. Every year, tourists and locals head to this beautiful, alfresco open-air theatre with a blissful woodland backdrop, for a fabulously British evening. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend visiting the Rutland Open Air Theatre at Tolethorpe. The atmosphere is second to none and I personally have never had a theatre experience as relaxed and enjoyable as the ones I’ve had here. Note that the audience seating is always covered by a permanent canopy, so the British weather will not taint your experience! Now, I do know that some people have reservations about Shakespeare due to the language, and I was the same, until I saw my first play at Tolethorpe. The actors are incredibly expressive with their faces and actions, making it evidently clear to the audience what’s happening. So, there’s absolutely no need to worry plus there’s a synopsis to read beforehand that helps you understand the play further. “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” In my opinion, that could arguably be one of the best Shakespearean lines to be written and this summer you can see it performed on stage in Twelfth Night! I had the pleasure of seeing this production recently, and I can safely say that it was absolutely brilliant. The comedic lines of the play were executed perfectly, earning a hearty laugh from the audience every time! This adaptation of Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, is set in Albania in the early 19th century, and is a tale of complicated love, shipwrecked twins, crossdressing, mistaken identity and drunken revels. The second Shakespearean play to be presented this summer at Tolethorpe is the epic tragedy Julius Caesar. The historical 8

www.espmag.co.uk

and political thriller tells the story of the conspiracy against Caesar, and has been described as one of the Bard’s most gripping plays. In this powerful drama set in Ancient Rome, Brutus and Cassius, fearing the growing domination of Julius Caesar, plot his death. But when, he’s assassinated, Mark Antony unleashes the rage of the people against the conspirators. The final play being performed this summer season is Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward. I’ve previously performed this play, and it was incredibly fun and entertaining to watch and be a part of; so, I have no doubt that this adaptation will be phenomenal! This supernatural comedy is set in the late 1930’s, and it shows novelist Charles Condomine, foolishly holding a séance in attempt to research his latest book. The peculiar medium, Madame Arcati accidently summons the spirit of Condomine’s dead wife, Elvira… How will Charles cope with two wives, one dead and the other positively alive? To make your night out extra special you can enjoy a picnic on the glorious green outside the stunning Tolethorpe Hall, taking in the perfectly manicured garden and sun (finger’s crossed!). Or, if you’d rather a more formal setting, you’re welcome to dine in the restaurant and for pre theatre drinks, head over to the theatre bar. Tickets range from £11 – £19 from the box office on 01780 756133 www.stamfordshakespeare.co.uk. Amba Tilney

Are you more of an Elinor or a Marianne? You’re unsure? Well, on Friday August 30 head along for a picturesque evening, watching Jane Austen’s classic novel come to life right in front of your eyes in The Cloisters at Peterborough Cathedral and see for yourself which Dashwood sister you really are. The production is presented by DOT Productions and has been adapted by Dawn Bush. A cast of only five actors and DOT’s renowned comedic style make this production one not to be missed! When it comes to their love lives Elinor and Marianne couldn’t be more different. One has more Sense whilst the other has more Sensibility; typical siblings, am I right? Heroes, heartbreak, suave villains and a duel, will have you falling in love with this beautiful story. Tickets are £12 per person (booking fee applies), doors open at 6pm. Amba Tilney

Treasure Island “Fifteen men on the Dead Man’s Chest. Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!” Ahoy, me hearties! Join Chapterhouse Theatre Company for this brand-new adaptation of the classic pirate adventure: Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. The swashbuckling tale shows a young Jim Hawkins on an epic adventure in the hope of finding Treasure Island. But, surprisingly, not all pirates can be trusted… This much-loved story (adapted for the stage by Laura Turner) promises to be an incredible evening of outdoor theatre! So, grab your Jolly Roger and head along to Flag Fen

The Prosecco and Gin Festival Let the summer beGin… its Prosecco o’clock! There’s nothing that says ‘summer’ more than soaking up the sun (or just general atmosphere; sun can be fleeting here in the UK, I won’t lie to you!) with a bubbly beverage in hand, chatting and laughing with people at a festival! The Prosecco and Gin touring festival is coming to The Cloisters, Peterborough Cathedral on Friday August 9 and Saturday August 10. The fizzing festival promises us over 60 different types of gin and a bar providing a large range of Prosecco and sparkling wines!

It’s the perfect summer’s day out, celebrating the nation’s favourite beverages. There are different festival sessions to choose from: Friday August 9 at 6pm and Saturday August 10 at 12pm noon and a later session at 5.30 pm. Due to the fact that it’s a festival of alcohol, the event is strictly for over 18’s only. Ticket prices range from £16.05 to £30.97. They are available online direct from the organisers at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk /e/prosecco-and-gin-festivalpeterborough-tickets-554000 07915. Amba Tilney

So, why not sing ‘Yo-ho-ho’ down to Flag Fen on Saturday August 17 at 6.30pm (gates open at 5.30pm). WOW!

65% of students at UCP gained a first class or 2:1 degree in 2018

There is still time to decide to study a degree and during Clearing you have time to take the next step to a brighter future.

Photos: Alan Bennett/Media Imaging Solutions

You don’t have to move away to study a degree as you can look closer to home to get the experience of a lifetime and get great results. Big isn’t always best and with University Centre Peterborough (UCP) being smaller, it can offer students many benefits that larger universities cannot offer. They still have a wide range of courses, but their small class sizes and supportive approach is what gets top marks from their students. Then the ability to study a full-time degree in two full days a week or less for part-time mean you can really fit studying a degree with other commitments such as work or family. From biological sciences to business management, computing to criminology or sociology to sports, we reckon they’ve got most bases covered. In this issue we’re taking a look at Clearing and how studying in Peterborough could make the grade for you…

I CHANGED COURSE TO STUDY LOCALLY Your results are in, you’re banking on a Uni place… or maybe you’re doubting if you’ve made the right choice. The panic starts to mount and your stress levels are through the roof. Clearing is a chance to really pin down what you want and where you want to study but the options can blow your mind! That’s where the staff at University Centre Peterborough (UCP) come in.

BIG SAVINGS Tuition fees at UCP are £1,250 lower per year compared to other universities

Alannah Pacey 10 www.espmag.co.uk

tudent Alannah Pacey applied to UCP during Clearing the day after her results came out and sought their help when she had a last minute change of plan. At the time she was living in Peterborough and had previously studied at Stanground Academy and Sir Harry Smith Community College. During studies she undertook work experience in a nursery and local primary school. When it comes to deciding on a degree, especially at just 18, it can be a tough and confusing time with a lot of pressures about which course to take. Originally Alannah had wanted to do midwifery and had been accepted on a degree course in London, but when it came down to it, she realised it really wasn’t for her and wanted to change direction.

“I was accepted at another university but had the realisation I really didn’t want to do midwifery after all. I knew I liked the nursery and preferred pre-school. I’d got a job over the summer in a nursery so also didn’t want to suddenly be without money and the whole ‘Uni experience’ of getting away from home just wasn’t for me.” Alannah is now happily studying on an FdA Early Years and Education course at University Centre Peterborough and says the support she received from UCP was amazing during Clearing and she couldn’t have done it without their team. The other university were reluctant to release her from their course but as panic mounted Alannah turned to the UCP Clearing team and they rang and negotiated on her behalf.

i

THAT’S GREAT Class sizes at UCP are kept smaller so lecturers can offer individual support

YOU’RE £’S BETTER OFF IF YOU LIVE AT HOME Education doesn’t come cheap and although you can apply for a maintenance loan to cover living costs there’s a big difference between living at home and studying locally in Peterborough compared to living away and all those bills you’ll have to cough up for. Plus the more your parents earn (if you’re under 25), the less you’ll receive so parents are expected to contribute. That can mean over £4k difference per year when you compare household incomes of £25k to £60k. If your mum and dad earn £30k for example you’ll receive £6,707 if you live at home, or £8,076 if you live away from your parents, which is only £1,369 difference. When you consider the big savings on accommodation, food and bills you could make by living at home, students who study locally are often much better off. With UCP offering full-time undergraduate students a £500 cash reward every year and households under £25k receiving a £500 low income payment every year there is a £3,000 bursary available which makes student life much easier Also, after you have completed your degree you don’t start to pay back your loan until you’re earning over £25,000 and the amount you then pay back is relatively small. To see how you could be entitled to go to www.gov.uk/student-finance.

“The admissions staff were incredibly helpful,” says Alannah, “they give you everything you need to make the right choice. “I would say to anyone – just ask the Uni for support, they will help you, and I found them really good, so don’t be afraid to ask. They told me who to ring and gave me all the info on the course I could ever need. I was in tears but they rang the other university and sorted it all out for me.” Alannah had done her research on UCP before starting the course and had a work placement at a local nursery so was already happy and familiar with the environment. She now works four days a week and studies for one day a week giving her just the right balance to achieve what she needs. Being able to work and study has given Alannah much greater financial freedom and has enabled her to already buy a car and rent her house. “I wouldn’t have been able to do any of that if I’d gone to Uni full time. One of my friends went to Uni to be a Primary School teacher – it’s taking her a year longer and she has no money and wishes she’d done it like me.” If you’re stressing over what to do Alannah is a great example of how things really can be turned

around and solved for the best outcome with some professional support, even at the last minute. She believes it’s important to make the right choices for you and not feel forced along certain routes – explore all the options. “My advice is to listen to yourself and what you really want – not what other people want you to do. There’s so much more to education but people don’t tell you about it. I didn’t know this was an option but I think more people would do it like this if they understood it better.”

NO CHANGE FOR EU STUDENTS

i

GREAT IDEA UCP students can get free sessions with English writing and speaking

Good news for EU students is that ‘Brexit’ has not affected EU students entitlement to study a degree in the UK. Anyone wanting to start a degree at UCP in September 2019 will still be entitled to make applications for courses and student finances. As long as you have started your course in September 2019, you will continue to be able to apply for funding throughout the duration of your degree regardless what happens due of Brexit. EU students can get a Tuition Fee Loan if you've lived in the UK for more than 3 years before the first day of the first academic year of your course (i.e. before 1st September 2016) and you can receive a Tuition Fee Loan and a Maintenance Loan you’ve lived in the UK for more than 5 years before the first day of the first academic year of your course (i.e. before 1st September 2014). For the most reliable and up to date information go to www.gov.uk/student-finance/eu-students. www.espmag.co.uk

Their team will be there offering students and parents all the advice you need about university degrees, applications and students finances as well as answering questions about anything else relating to starting uni.

Even if you’ve already been accepted at another uni, you still have the opportunity to change where you study. Firstly contact the UCP admissions team to see if they can offer you a place on a course and help you through. Then you can login to UCAS Track and release yourself into Clearing. Once this is done, you can select UCP as your Clearing choice and get excited and prepare yourself for the start of the first semester.

12 www.espmag.co.uk

Why not get up close and personal with UCP and check out what it has to offer. Head down to an Open Day and see it for yourself and chat to those in the know for expert advice. There will be information talks as well as opportunity to speak to current students.

If you can’t visit on this date, you can just drop into UCP anytime on Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm and they will be happy to help.

Get all your details to hand of your Level 3 grades such as A-levels or BTEC qualification (actual or expected if you are still waiting for your grades) as well as GCSE qualifications as well as all your personal details like your home post code. If you’ve not applied through UCAS at all, you’ll need you to have personal statement ready so prep this in advance.

If your results didn’t go your way there’s no need to panic! If there’s a small difference, they may still be able to accept you so just call the UCP admissions team to see if they can offer you a place.

COME TO AN OPEN DAY

Saturday August 17 10.00am – 2.00pm

Here’s what you need to do… • Give the UCP admissions team a bell on 01733 214461 or email admissions@ucp.ac.uk. These guys have seen it all before and can talk you through the process.

Full-time undergraduates at UCP receive a £500 cash reward at the end of every year

CALL THE CLEARING HOTLINE

Like so many students (over 70,000 last year!) you’re probably waiting for Clearing before you apply for your uni place, so if the panic’s setting in let us calm your nerves! These days Clearing doesn’t mean you bombed with your grades – you might be going through it for a variety of reasons. Maybe you’ve like Alannah (on previous page) and changed your mind about the course you want to study, want to focus on a career change and improve your qualification, decided you want to study closer to home, or you have not even yet applied. Either way it’s not as daunting as you might fear. The best advice is to not leave it too late or wait until your results come out before applying – you can do it now! You can apply for a place during Clearing before you get your results as Clearing actually officially opened in July. So get ahead of the game and then you can get though it all much quicker once you get your results – after all who wants to prolong the agony? If you’re sorted with a uni place you’ll be able to crack on with sorting out your money applications that can drag on and get geared up much faster.

When applying through UCAS, each degree course requires a specific number of tariff points – this is to ensure that you have the required grades to start the course. UCAS tariff points are made up of the qualifications gained and the grades achieved. During Clearing, the UCAS tariff for some courses might be lower so you never know, you might actually have the grades required. If you want to apply for a course which requires 80 UCAS points, this is the equivalent BB or CCE at A-level or MMP at BTEC National Extended Diploma. A-levels A* A B C D E

ManTown about

ano Pep Cipri pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk

A US survey says 66% of women value personality in a man over physical attraction. Find me a woman who’d take Johnny Vegas laughing them into bed over Tom Hardy and I’ll give you the moon on a stick.

Gennaro has Taste! Cathedral Square was awash with beautiful women and mouth-watering food but Italian Festival special guest Gennaro Contaldo was immediately drawn to the youngest of my three babies – a bright orange Vespa. I always knew he had a bit of class! It was Gennaro’s second visit to our city as the festival’s big draw and once again he didn’t disappoint. He arrived three hours before he was due to go on stage because he insisted on meeting the crowds and the stall holders. He made time for proper conversation with everybody, didn’t demand anything or have a celebrity strop. To be around and interview, he has to be one of the nicest and most genuine famous people I’ve spent time with. Gennaro was the icing sugar on the panetone in what I reckon was the best Italian Festival we’ve had for years. The entertainment programme was varied, there was a bigger choice of food on offer and the atmosphere was that of a busy piazza in a thriving Italian city. Well done to the Italian Community Association for organising what must be the best and longestrunning Italian Festival in the UK and long may it continue.

Free Running for the PGER It never ceases to amaze me who takes part in the Perkins Great Eastern Run… and their reasons why they do it.

Follow the latest Perkins Great Eastern Run developments on Twitter @PerkinsGER, Facebook www.facebook.com/ ThePerkinsGreatEasternRun and Instagram @perkinsgreateasternrun.

Photos: Chris Brudenell

ESP’s very own adventurer Darren Grigas has done it with a huge weighted back pack (just to make it even tougher!), our photographer Chris Brudenell has done it dressed as Batman as part of his 40th birthday weight loss programme, and our reporter Mikey Clarke is doing it this year in support of Anna’s Hope to see if he can still run after watching all those movies he reviews for us scoffing popcorn! It’s safe to say ESP is right behind the event – or even in front as ‘poster boy’ Chris Brudenell can even be seen grinning broadly from the many posters for the PGER all over the city. It’s an incredible event for Peterborough that I’m proud to see take place here and an incredible personal challenge for those who take part in the half marathon or the 5k fun run. So many people I speak to are in training for the October event and I saw many of them taking up the free training sessions. It’s a chance to get advice from experienced racers and coaches and the sessions take place fortnightly on Wednesday evenings at Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track in Bishops Road through until October. So if you’re making this the year you mark a birthday, get fitter or just tick it off your bucket list, pop down and get some free support... you don’t have to be dressed as a superhero or a chicken to take part! Visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk for more information about pacers, target times and the free training sessions. The next ones are on August 7 and 21.

MY

WORD OF THE MONTH

BEER

CAUGHT IN

THE ACT! “Marco, I’m thinki ng of going into the shoe bu “Seriously, Genna ro, stick to the day siness...” job.”

It’s Peterborough Beer Festival month and I thought I’d highlight all the words beer is associated with and how the frothy stuff underpins the lows and highs in society. Divorce, party, STI, TV, birthday, Tinder, flipflops, arrest, abuse, celebration, cardiac arrest, belly, potty mouth, morning after pill, yacht, football, pork scratchings, paracetamol and rose-tinted spectacles.

My First Job as an Escort Yes, it’s true. I’ve got some time to kill and could do with a little extra cash, so I’ve joined an escort agency. I realise this might be alarming reading for some but I’m at the point in my life where I’m willing to try things at least once and I have no dependants holding me back. Now, I know escort agencies come with preconceived ideas but I did a lot of research before choosing the one I joined. Yes, there’s always the chance of being asked to provide personal ‘favours’ but the beauty of the agency I’ve signed up to is that I get to choose the jobs. This, my first, was an absolute pleasure. The brief was to accompany these two lovely ladies to a wedding in Slough. One of them owns a fancy Mercedes car and I basically chauffeured them to and from the venue where they made sure I was fed and watered – and even gave me an hour’s break. It was a pleasure to be in their company. We had cultured, intellectual conversation all evening and put the world to rights on topics such as relationships, sex education, religion, drugs and Love Island. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend an evening – and I was paid for it. Roll on my next client/s. www.espmag.co.uk

Family Circus Day At Ayscoughfee

Deepings Raft Race will make a Splash The Deepings Raft Race is back once again! On Sunday August 4, over 40 rafts created and decorated to this year’s theme of Mardi Gras/Carnival, will be (attempting) to race along the river from Bridge Street, Deeping St. James up the River Welland to the Market Deeping town centre. It’s truly a fun day out with the family and look out for our ESP photographer there to capture the action. The typically British event is extremely fun and entertaining, there’s a lot of fancy dress, drinks but sadly there may be a few sunken rafts… on a more positive note, the event’s packed with delicious food stalls which is a win for everyone. Entry for spectators is free, however all of the money that’s raised will be given to charity; this year’s chosen charities are: Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, Peterborough Air Cadets and Deeping United Football Club. For more information check out www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk. Amba Tilney

HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH

Photos: Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

Last year we went to the moon and back and now this is planet Earth – this huge art installation is coming to Peterborough Cathedral this month.

W

e absolutely loved the Museum of the Moon by artist Luke Jerram when it came to Peterborough – and so did around 40,000 others! The dramatic recreation of the moon was suspended in the Cathedral as part of the 900th anniversary celebrations, and now there’s more to get excited about. Luke’s Gaia Earth artwork arrives here on August 19 and you can view it through until September 15. Bookings are now open and we highly recommend you don’t miss out – it’s amazing! The stunning seven metre artwork features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of 20 www.espmag.co.uk

the Earth’s surface. Lit from the inside, it will be seen to full effect under the central tower as darkness gradually falls in the Cathedral during the 6.30pm to 9.30pm opening times. Gaia rotates once every four minutes, 360 times faster than our real planet, and it’s accompanied by a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones. It’ll be another unique experience in an incredible setting. It’s going to be a really popular one and there are lots of special events planned around it too. There’s everything from tower tours to talks, concerts to quiet evenings, yoga to a silent disco and more. At the Welcome World opening event on August 19 one lucky person will have the opportunity to switch on the mechanism to start the rotation of the Earth – it will then run continuously throughout the exhibition. There is no entry charge for Welcome World, but booking is essential. A limited number of tickets are available so book early! The evening viewings are on numerous selected dates during the exhibition and booking is essential via the Cathedral’s ticket site at www.ticketisland.co.uk/ peterboroughcathedral. Tickets are £2 per person or £6 per family (2 adults, 2 children).

Booking is only needed for evening events. There is no admission charge to visit the Gaia Earth exhibition during normal daytime visiting hours (donations are invited). These visiting times will usually be from 10am until 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 12 noon until 3pm on Sundays. There is restricted access sometimes so please check the website before visiting www.peterboroughcathedral.org.uk/opening-times.aspx - or call 01733 355315. Get social and follow #EarthArtwork.

These range from the world's longest poem being created in the city, to storytelling picnics, artists and illustrators in

schools and community venues, festivals, exhibitions, a book bench trail and much more. Partners on board so far include Vivacity, Peterborough City Council, National Literacy Trust, Metal, Queensgate, Railworld, Eastern Angles and a whole host of community groups around the city.” The year will culminate with a striking trail of book-shaped benches across Peterborough created by schools, community groups and businesses in association with

creative producers Wild in Art. It’s not just a campaign for kids. Schools, businesses and other organisations are being encouraged to prioritise reading by signing up to the Peterborough Reading Pledge. You can find out more at www.peterboroughcelebrates.org.uk. Updates will also be posted on the Peterborough Celebrates Facebook page and on Twitter @pborocelebrates.

Enjoy a Summer of Stories in Queensgate When growing up, there were so many books that I loved and now I associate them with different moments of my life. The feeling of nostalgia, seeing books like The Tiger Who Came To Tea or Matilda in a shop, is not one that can be replaced! It’s so incredibly important for young children to enjoy reading as it helps to develop concentration and levels of vocabulary, but it also teaches children about the world around them in a fun way. So, this summer, from Monday July 29 - Friday August 9 get your little ones’ imaginations soaring and inspire literary creativity at Queensgate Shopping Centre. The free event is filled with book characters, crafts and family story times. From the enormous inflatable Boris the Bookworm to Humpty Dumpty’s storytelling and parading Egg Soldiers, there’s something for everyone! There’ll be a Giant Book Nook area with comfy cushions and beanbags, plus an enchanted forest of woodland characters from both modern and classic fairy tales. Don’t forget there is bookmark-making which is always exciting, cartoon character designing and story-writing activities! The event’s taking place to support Vivacity’s Peterborough Celebrates: Year of Reading which aims to get the people of Peterborough reading more. Visit the Queensgate website to find out more: http://www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk/westgate-arcade.html or discover more about the Challenge at https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. With it being the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Peterborough Museum is hosting space themed events throughout the summer holidays organised by Vivacity. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from July 30 - August 28, 10am 3pm, children can explore a different aspect of space each week – from meteorites to Martians. Let their curiosity run wild, and see the giant Earth model being displayed in the Cathedral in August as well. It is absolutely breathtaking observing our planet up close and the model portrays a great image of what our planet looks like from space. The event is also a part of the Vivacity Summer Reading Challenge, Space Chase, encouraging children to read more books over the holidays and win prizes. So head along to your local library and get the kids involved with everything that’s on offer this summer. To find out more call 01733 864663. or visit www.vivacity.org. Amba Tilney

Out Of This World Storytelling Professional storyteller, John Kirk, is also coming to participate in the Vivacity Summer Reading Challenge! A trio of Out Of This World stories will be performed by the well-loved storyteller, so make sure you don’t miss out on some of these intergalactic adventures. Head along to the John Clare Theatre within the Central Library on Friday August 9 at 11am for a marvelous experience, and feel stories come alive like never before. This is a brilliant opportunity to really get involved in the spirit of the challenge, part of the Year of Reading events, and will allow your children’s imaginations to soar. Tickets are £3 per person and you can book at any Vivacity library, or book online. (Please note: Bookings are taken through their Heritage booking system. Just select the library event you want to book for from the drop down list). Amba Tilney

PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL Beer we go again! Can you believe the Peterborough Beer Festival is in its 42nd year? No wonder I get a real nostalgic feeling once I pass through those gates. I’ve been visiting the popular event since I was a child (having soft drinks, of course) and every time I’m there, all the great memories come flooding back whilst I’m creating new ones.

I

f you’re yet to have been yourself, you may be surprised to hear that I attended when I was much younger. However, this is the perfect family Mikey Clarke event. It’s not just about the best Real Ales from around the UK. With fairground rides, carnival games, live music, a variety of foods and soft drinks… there’s something for everyone. Even the pet dog is welcome (provided they’re kept on a lead). The annual festival kicks off on Tuesday August 20 and runs through until Saturday August 24 on the Embankment.

The five-day event also features a gin bar, cider and perry, wine and much more. For me though, it’s all about the beer. The organisers believe in getting the best selection of beers that people will enjoy and will continue to talk about long after they’ve finished drinking. During the years I’ve experienced a whole bunch of flavoured beers including chocolate, cherry, banana and more! It’s all kept in tip-top condition under giant marquees by their expert team of beer keepers so don’t fear our unpredictable weather. When it comes to the Peterborough Beer Festival, there are certain things you expect to see. I’ve attended more than enough times to come up with a fair few. Check out our Beer Fest Bingo below. Take this copy of ESP around with you and tick the boxes once you’ve witnessed something mentioned. The first person within your group to get a full line (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) has the rest of the gang buy them a drink? Just a thought. Mikey Clarke

paparazzi Caught in the act? Proud to be part of Peterborough Pride! The second Peterborough Pride event was a huge success and ESP was delighted to support this fantastic festival in the city. An incredible 42 different events were attended by over 5,000 people and 10,000 plus engaged online. The big highlight was the Pride parade and street carnival with 1,200 making it more than double the size of last year’s. ESP’s photographer Mike Harris was there to capture the action with everyone waving their rainbow flags and having an amazing time Organiser Simon Green told ESP – “Thank you to everyone who hosted or organised an event this year. You did a fantastic job. We filled theatres, cinemas, bars, art centres, pubs, and nightclubs. We paraded in unity and danced together in the streets of the city centre. We could never have imagined that we would come this far in only two years, and many never believed it would ever happen in Peterborough.” You can see all of our Paparazzi photos on our Facebook page.

Expectations are high for music’s new star, Mabel. We’ve been keeping an eye on Mabel but if you haven’t yet clocked this young pop star you soon will.

W

ith the release of her new album High Expectations this month and recent announcement of a headline tour as well as festival, radio and TV appearances, including a slot with Graham Norton, she’s stepping into the spotlight of her very own after various collaborations. A massive run of UK and EU headline dates kicking off in January will see her front and centre of the music scene and you’ll be hearing more and more of her with her latest single release Mad Love already making an impact. Mabel McVey has made quite the impression since first bursting on to the scene in September 2015 with her release, Know Me Better. Since then, Mabel’s growth (musically, emotionally, visually) has been extraordinary. Her formative material led to the surprise breakthrough of the single Finders Keepers in 2017, which went platinum, spent 5 weeks in the top 10, and saw Mabel nominated for her first BRIT Award (Critics’ Choice). The phenomenal success of her single Don’t Call Me Up (already named the biggest-selling single by a UK female artist of 2019 thus far) and an autumn tour coming up with Khalid has made her hot property with critics describing her as ‘One of the year’s breakout stars… Mabel was born to perform’ – Sunday Times. Still aged just 23 years old, her debut album High Expectations is that rare record which feels both like a graduation and, also, just the beginning for Mabel. The singer and songwriter has already sold over 3 million singles in the UK (two platinum, three gold, and two silver), surpassed 1 billion streams, and sold out the likes of Brixton Academy. Introducing the album for the first time, Mabel writes: "High Expectations the title says it all. It’s about the expectations I have of myself, other people’s expectations of me and vice versa, especially in relationships. The general topic of the project is the negatives and positives that come with that. I want to send a positive message to everyone that’s going to listen to it. I’ve gained so much confidence from writing this album and that’s what I want people to take from it.” Mabel has emerged as one of the UK’s most positive, candid lyrical voices, with songs that frequently explore everything from identity (sexual, racial, personal), the challenges of modern relationships, and working out who you are and what you want. The daughter of singer Neneh Cherry and producer Cameron McVey (Massive Attack, Portishead, Sugababes and All Saints) – it’s fair to say music quite literally runs in her blood.

28 www.espmag.co.uk

Born in the mountains of Malaga, Spain, Mabel’s childhood was spent zig-zagging the globe. A self-confessed loner, Mabel found solace in her music. “I didn’t have many friends growing up. I wasn’t into other kids that much. I used to hate when adults would leave me alone. I would already know that we didn’t have the same chemistry, I almost feel like I didn’t have the innocence of being a child in that sense,” she explains. It is there Mabel found the confidence to indulge and explore her songwriting abilities, drawing on these unique life experiences to create tracks which lay bare the woman behind the music. For Mabel, ultimately everything goes back to those early roots: a child of the golden-age of 00s r’n’b, who harnesses the energy of her idols Beyonce circa Destiny’s Child, as well the vocal stylings of musical legends like Stevie Wonder and Minnie Ripperton. “I hate the expression ‘finding yourself’ but I do feel like that’s what I’ve been doing. I can’t please everyone but I can create something that makes me happy, and that’s the most important thing. This is just the beginning.”

FAST & FURIOUS: HOBBS & SHAW Cast: Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba Director: David Leitch There’s undoubtedly only one film that’s going to end the summer on a chaotic rollercoaster action high – and it’s the first spin-off from the uber-successful Fast & Furious series. Dwayne Johnson’s hard-hitting federal agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s former SAS operative-turned-mercenary Deckard Shaw are forced into an unlikely alliance – when a genetically-enhanced cyber villain threatens the future of humanity. Said villain comes in the form of British favourite Idris Elba’s Brixton Lore, who’s created

a deadly virus that could just threaten the human race, leading to former adversaries Hobbs and Shaw – who had their altercations throughout Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious – joining forces with Deckard’s sister and MI6 field agent Hattie Shaw (M:I-Fallout’s Vanessa Kirby) in the process. And coming from the man behind the camera for Deadpool 2 (who also had an uncredited hand in John Wick too) this should be in safe hands – and should do exactly what it says on the tin. Released

Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction) has reached the ninth directorial film of his career, with him claiming that his tenth will be his last. He re-teams with his Django Unchained star Leonardo DiCaprio, who plays faded television actor Rick Dalton, and highlights his battle to achieve fame and success in the film industry – during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles – alongside his stunt double, Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth. Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Kurt Russell and the late Luke Perry star in this comedy-drama that will be sure to boast Tarantino’s unique production values and styling.

ANGEL HAS FALLEN After saving the White House and London in the previous two films, lightning strikes again – John McClane-style – for Gerard Butler’s Secret Service Agent Mike Banning. This time he finds himself framed for an assassination attempt on Morgan Freeman’s US President Allan Trumball – and turns to unlikely allies in a race against time to clear his name and uncover the real terrorist threat. It might sound like a stereotypical plot, but the first couple of films were serviceable high-octane action fun, so expect more of the same, with Nick Nolte, Jada Pinkett Smith and Danny Huston in support, as this trilogy wraps.

WizCon Returns! Photos: Andrew James Photography

How great is it that we can say the Harry Potter legend, Warwick Davis, is local to Peterborough?! Or that Station 9 ¾ is just a 45-minute train ride away!

I

f that’s too far for you to go for your Potter fix, fear not. Once again the magic is coming to us. WizCon – a celebration of all things magical (with a particularly large focus on the Potter franchise) is returning to The Cresset on Sunday September 22. WizCon is made for Harry Potter fans, by Harry Potter fans, and after the great success of the first event in March, the organisers wanted to bring it back for another event in 2019, to give even more people a chance to experience their familyorientated Harry Potter comic-con style event. So, if you want to have a chance to meet some of the stars of the

Harry Potter films, WizCon will be the place to be! I attended their last event on behalf of ESP and loved it! The Cresset was packed out with excited attendees, many of which were fully dressed for the part. There was an amazing atmosphere to the place.

The event was packed full of witchcraft and wizardry...

The event was packed full of witchcraft and wizardry, Meet and Greet opportunities, an exciting pop-up escape room from Hour Escape Rooms, a Wand Fighting Masterclass, a wide range of magical merchandise and much more. The Wand Fighting Masterclass was particularly fun to watch – seeing kids of all ages (some in their 60’s) really getting into character. The overall theme of the

next event will be fairly similar to the last but with some fun new elements that will be announced in due course. The cosplay contest was extremely popular last time so that will of course run again. Thanks to feedback, organisers will be running separate child and adult contests, which will be judged by Frank Longbottom himself, James Payton, to give more people a chance to win! Other celebs in attendance will include Louis Cordice, who’s best known for playing Blaise Zabini, a popular Slytherin character. You can also meet Adrian Rawlins, who played Harry Potter’s father. At the previous event I spoke to Josh Herdman, who made his acting debut in 2001 in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as Draco Malfoy’s fellow Slytherin, Gregory Goyle. He went on to play this role for close to a decade in all eight Harry Potter movies and his voice can be heard in some of the Harry Potter video games. I asked Josh if he expected the films to be as big as they were. “I don’t think anybody did,” he said. “We knew it would be popular as the books were and Warner Bros were behind it. It

was when I attended the first premiere in Leicester Square that I knew just how big it was. Thousands of people filled the area and I could hear people screaming my name. They hadn’t even seen the film at this point.” What questions will you ask the Potter stars? For full details (including who else will be attending) visit www.wiz-con.co.uk. We look forward to seeing you there. Mikey Clarke

New running event will be Gigafast!

A fantastic new running weekend is coming to Peterborough this month and it has some powerful support! The Sublime TWENTY4 race weekend is being held in association with Vodafone Gigafast Broadband as Vodafone UK has been announced as partner for the event.

The inaugural running weekend offers something for everyone, including a 24 hour, 12 hour night race, 10K, 5K and 1K Children’s Race.

This event should be a real challenge for local runners as you have the option to run the 24 or 12 hour races as a part of a team, in pairs or as a solo entry. It’s all taking place at the stunning Nene Park and Ferry Meadows on August 3 and 4 and promises to be an exciting new addition to the city’s running calendar. There’s free camping for anyone entered into races, plus fabulous live music and entertainment to add to the weekend. Martin Jennings of Sublime Racing commented, “We’re truly thrilled to welcome Vodafone on board supporting our exciting new race weekend. We look forward to working in partnership with the Vodafone team and achieving our shared goals.” You’ve probably noticed the works around Peterborough as Vodafone Gigafast Broadband is rolling out across the city, bringing broadband speeds of up to 900Mbps using more reliable full fibre along every stage of the connection from your home or workplace. Unlike most broadband services, Vodafone Gigafast Broadband uses a pure optical fibre network to transmit data and high-definition video instead of old copperbased telephone cables. For more information go to www.vodafone.co.uk/gigafast. If you’re keen to get involved in the race events, runners can find out more and register for the Sublime TWENTY4 races online at www.sublimeracing.com.

TanninG The safe Way This summer Been inspired by the latest Love Islanders to make sure you’re bronzed and beautiful In August? Let’s face it, who wants pale legs when we’re wearing our lovely summer dresses and denim shorts. But getting a good fake colour on your legs, which isn’t too dark, too streaky, or too expensive is never easy. So here at ESP, we’ve had a look what you can get locally and narrowed it down to our top 3 options for everyone.

ESP loves to support a great local event, and this certainly fits the bill for health and beauty fans. A Wellbeing event is being held on Saturday September 28 between 11am and 4pm at Queen Katharine Academy in Walton, Peterborough. There is a lot going on. They have over 30 stalls and around 10 people doing talks demos and classes and a jewellery making workshop. That includes details on local providers of Reiki, IMET therapy/NLP coaching, Laughter Yoga, grove sessions, Thai Chi, mindfulness and hypnotherapy. There will also be plenty of products on sale including the Body Shop and Neal’s Yard. There's food too with the Happy Café. Organiser Melanie told ESP – “I chose the Brain Tumour Charity as it's very close to my heart. My dad passed away with a brain tumour 8 years almost to the day of the event. It was very sudden and we didn’t have much time left with him between diagnosis and his passing. It was an aggressive tumour and nothing could be done sadly.” Admission prices will be £3 for adults, under 16s get in free. Payment can be on the door or via Eventbrite. We’ll see you there!

Dove DermaSpa Summer Revived Fair - Med Lotion In Boots for £3.49 What’s so good about it: You can use it every day to build up a summer glow, a light tan which isn’t to OTT, and is difficult to streak. It doesn’t smell too bad either and is excellent value! Rating 4/5 – great for those with a fairer skin

This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle In John Lewis for £38 What’s so good about it: I was skeptical when it came out of the bottle a very dark colour, but a small amount rubbed into the legs gives an instant (yes instant) perfect glow. No streaks if you rub it in fast enough, no smell, and your legs do look catwalk ready. Pricey, but a great quick fix. Rating 4.5/ 5

Honey Bronze™ Tinted Leg Mist In The Body Shop for £16 What’s so good about it: It dries super quickly, and doesn’t transfer, so great if you need to whip on a white skirt afterwards. Gives a lovely bronze colour and is pretty fast too. And as you would expect from The Body Shop, it smells good too. Read the online reviews, they say it all. Rating 5/5 36 www.espmag.co.uk

An apple a day aving just spent a lovely Sunday (as I write this) with an old friend and work colleague, she asked me if I still eat as many apples as she remembered I did way back. She was even specific to tell me it was the green Granny Smiths! Today, I still eat apples daily, one is added to my daily green juice and another will be eaten during the day (sometimes more).

inside of the apple) but the peel is where they’re mainly found, this is why it’s best to eat the whole apple and not peel it. There are some who may have gut inflammation who have to remove the peel but eating them stewed can help in these cases and deliver the phytonutrients.

There is an old adage ‘an apple a day will keep the doctor away’ but it should also say ‘so long as you eat the peel’ as this is where the chemicals in apples can offer us protection.

Researchers have identified lots of chemicals in apple peel that either inhibit or kill cancer cells in laboratory cultures.

H

Apples are so familiar to us that we rarely give them any thought, humans are thought to have enjoyed eating apples from as early as 6500bc, they have remarkable nutritional qualities such as: Boron (good for bone strengthening) Potassium Calcium Vitamin C and more...

However, it is the exceptionally high levels of various phytochemicals and antioxidants that have been shown to transfer their health benefits onto us. The phytonutrients are found in the pulp (the 38 www.espmag.co.uk

Apples are also great for those with constipation as the pectin can really help to get things moving naturally. Other health benefits may include: Reducing cholesterol Supporting blood sugar levels Weight management

Researchers have identified lots of chemicals in apple peel that either inhibit or kill cancer cells in laboratory cultures. The soluble fibre called pectin has also been shown to help reduce inflammation in the gut and offer a protective barrier so reducing the risk of inflammatory bowel diseases. This fibre feeds and nourishes our own friendly gut microbes as well as producing weak acids in the gut that help reduce inflammation and play a role in immunity.

Lowering cardiovascular risks… and much more.

So the next time you by-pass the humble apple, remember that the old saying was not made up and is some fictional old wives’ tale, but said by those who knew exactly what medicinal potential they contain. However, this doesn’t include a pint of cider or a toffee apple (just in case you wondered) or some other hijacked way of enjoying an apple, keep it simple – keep it raw if you can. Outdoor s e r u t n e Adv Sacrewell has been a much-loved farm attraction in the Peterborough area for as long as I can remember. I’ve taken my children there yearafter-year as they grew, although now in their late teens, the scary fact is, it won’t be many more years until they could be taking my grandchildren to visit the farm. Grandchildren? Crikey I’m getting that old!

M

eeting the farm animals at Sacrewell is an exciting experience for the countless children that visit, along with the fun of workshops, craft shows, venue hire for parties, caravan and camping and tours of the old mill as well as many seasonal events. As if that wasn’t already enough, the most recent addition is a £65,000 immersive natural play area, designed and created from the combined minds of local school children and pioneers in natural play, Earth Wrights Ltd. The new play area was opened by locally based explorer and adventurer Laura Bingham. As an avid adventurer myself, I was excited to meet Laura, having followed her online for some time

40 www.espmag.co.uk

(groupie alert!). Laura’s cycled across South America, sailed across the Atlantic and led an all-female team on a worldrecord descent of the 1,000km winding Essequibo River from source to sea. After cutting the hessian ribbon with some amusement and a few attempts, we watched the children run around in awe as they saw how their ideas had been brought to life. They jumped, climbed, swung and balanced on the stepping stones, walks, rope bridges and balance

beams, which are all located near the popular Pooh Sticks Bridge and the new den and nest building areas. Laura’s 2-year-old son Ran came along for the opening, aptly named after worldrenowned explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Since Sir Ran was my tentmate during our Marathon des Sables experience, I can appreciate why you’d name your son after such an inspirational legend, although Ed wouldn’t be a bad choice either, as Ran’s dad, Ed Stafford is also an explorer, adventurer and survivalist who’s often on TV. So with both parents as Discovery Channel regulars and ‘the greatest living explorer’ as his namesake, this little lad is heading for great adventures. Laura said her son already loves the great outdoors and she believes play areas

Laura launches book on her bike like this are crucial for our kids’ wellbeing – “My 2 year-old is never more alive, never more responsive – he comes alive in nature and he doesn’t cry, he isn’t agitated, he’s the perfect child when he’s immersed in nature. But when he’s in front of the TV and you take him away, he’s like a little devil child so that alone means I know that outdoor play is so much more healthy for our children and we should try and focus on doing more of it and thankfully places like this make it bit more easy and accessible.” Laura’s just released a fantastic series of children’s books based on ‘real adventures by real people’. The first of the ‘A Spirit of Adventure’ series is the story of Laura cycling across Ecuador with no money, and she has other amazing people earmarked for further books. Laura says she’s keen to give youngsters some strong role models to relate to – “It’s really to get in there before the Kim Kardashian lifestyle really imprints on girls especially, and boys, because the boys emulate what they see and if they’re being shown these really healthy adventures of how strong girls and boys are, they’re hopefully more likely to emulate that and realise how big the world is and how much opportunity is out there for them – rather than thinking that validation comes from what clothes you wear. It’s what your body’s capable of and how it’s this beautiful machine that you can use however you like.”

ESP’s Darren Grigas is an advocate of making the most of the outdoors and keeping active at whatever level and in whatever way you can. Even a fast walk is enough – it’s not all about climbing mountains – it’s just about having a go.

The play area project’s been funded by a generous £50,000 grant from Augean and a further £15,000 from The William Scott Abbott Trust which operates the visitor centre at Sacrewell. Engagement Manager, Nikki Cherry, said: “The Trustees, staff and everyone involved with the William Scott Abbott Trust at Sacrewell are absolutely delighted that our application to the Augean Community Fund was successful and has enabled us to design an area of natural play, creating a space that children can engage with the outdoors in an adventurous way.” So make sure you get the kids out on some of their own adventures this summer and give this great natural play area a try – it could inspire some new explorers and that can’t be bad!

aura Bingham and her husband fellow adventurer/explorer Ed Stafford (originally from Peterborough), now live locally in Northamptonshire and are inspiring examples of what can be achieved. Like Darren they want to give youngsters a love of being outside. ESP is also supporting the Peterborough Celebrates: Year of Reading so we were pleased to hear about the launch of her exciting new book series which aims to inspire some future adventurers, or at least get the kids away from their screens. Chatting to us at the opening of the new natural play area at Sacrewell, Laura said – “I think we’re stuck in front of X Boxes and TVs so much that having an option to go out and play in the outdoors in a safe place is brilliant. And this place (Sacrewell) is amazing – it has so much variety, so many different aspects of it that I don’t think a child would get bored here very easily and there’s a nice café where parents can sit down, grab a coffee and enjoy 5 minutes while their children tear around in nature and the influence of all the good things that brings.” Laura’s just been on a cycling tour to promote the release of her new book, A Mountain of Dreams Series: One Girl and her Bicycle (RRP: £6.99) with the first story focusing on her own travels, cycling through Ecuador with no money. “The concept is real adventures by real people made accessible for 6-9 year-olds. Hopefully I’m looking to eventually follow five adventurers so that children can meet them and realise that they’re real people and if they Google them they can find out what they’re doing. “I’m nervous that when children read adventure books, journey books, that they think ‘that’s not possible’ because it’s fiction, so it takes the possibility part out of it. But as they are real people, this is genuinely a possible expedition adventure because someone has done it. The idea of having 4 or 5 adventurers that we follow through the series is that they can always emulate one of them.” Other books planned in the series include the story of a blind lady who rode a horse across Columbia and Laura adds – “There’s always a way round things and hopefully with the books encouragement, and these sort of natural play areas, people will realise that everything is possible as long as you stop making excuses and start thinking of an alternative way of achieving the same dream.” To win copies of Laura’s book visit ESP’s Facebook page. www.espmag.co.uk

Our Boy(d) is Back!

I’ve had many surprises in my 18 years of working at the football club. In fact, you would think after all this time, I would be hardened to the surprise element. However, when I walked into the office on Monday July 15, I was genuinely taken aback to see a certain George Boyd shaking hands with everyone.

In my time at Posh, George has been one of my favourite players. He scored some unbelievable goals, played some mesmerising passes and left more full-backs on their backside than I can recall. Imagine my surprise to learn we were signing him on a two-year deal.

Sometimes it’s a privilege revealing information as a press officer. I love watching the reaction from supporters to good news. I also sneakily revel in watching interesting news drop from other clubs to see how people deal with the situation. When Huddersfield announced Paddy Power as a main partner, the internet nearly broke. So Boyd is back. And universally met with acclaim at the signing. He is a legend of the football club and has played in the Premier League with Burnley and Hull as well as playing week in, week out in the Championship as regularly as last season.

He’s an incredible signing for a League One club and Boyd admitted he wouldn’t have signed for any other League One club bar the Posh. “Peterborough is a club that I have always had such a big affection for and it is great to be back. I am genuinely excited. I don’t think I would have dropped down into League One for anyone else. There is sentimental value here, but the reason I am here is to get another promotion with the football club. It is a good squad that Darren has assembled and a big thank you to the chairman for getting the deal over the line. I am delighted to be here.

“The manager is desperate for promotion and hopefully I can help that. I know what I am getting; I know that I am going to enjoy training every day. I love the way he plays football. At this stage of my career you need to enjoy football and play with a smile on your face and I feel that I can do that here.” His arrival has certainly created a buzz. Interest in season tickets has spiked, tickets for the opening game of the season are being snapped up and ultimately that is what we want as a football club. If you have never been to watch us play, I implore you to give us a try!

JOIN THE SUP TOUR @ TALLINGTON LAKES Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) has become hugely popular so it’s great that we can just travel up the road to give it a try at Tallington Lakes. If you’re keen to get started and give SUP a try they’ll be running free equipment demos aimed at helping you find the right board. They won’t be running structured instruction and all participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult, but these experts can give you the lowdown on what to use. On Friday August 9 though, there’s a great chance to watch the professionals showing you how it’s done and to try it out for yourself. The Red Paddle Co's Ultimate SUP Demo Tour heads here for its penultimate tour stop at Tallington Lakes from 10am –

6pm for a day packed with fun on the water. They’ve been travelling up and down the country on tour and will now be bringing us free board demos, challenges, beach/lake cleans and SUP advice from 'Team Red'.

On the day they also have two of the Red Paddle Co Dragon SUPs to race on. These 22ft long inflatable boards can take four people at once and took the paddle board world by storm in 2017 so no matter your age or ability rally a team together and unleash the dragon! As part of the fun down at the watersports centre during the day the guys from Oakley Eyewear will also be on hand talking sunglasses so you can stock up on some new sunnies while you’re there.

The ESP Comedy Guide

ARG Comedy Festival: My Highlights Held every year at Shoreditch Town Hall during the first weekend of July, ARG Comedy Festival features some of the circuit’s most celebrated and critically acclaimed comedians rehearsing their material before heading off to the big comedy summer camp that is the Edinburgh Fringe.

Sophie Duker

T

his year I attended the Sunday session along with my comedy nerd friends in order to predict which acts could be this year’s hottest ticket during the festival, and whilst I can’t confirm which of these acts will do well with regards to the awards, I can at least tell you about which acts I enjoyed the most! The first act I saw at ARG was Sophie Duker, an instantly likeable performer who packed in feminist discussion, generational observations, and even a reference to popular children’s TV show Balamory within her hour. Performing the first show of the day was no mean feat but she managed to provide a strong show considering her relative newcomer

Sarah Slack brings us the ESP guide to where the laughs are at this month…

status, making her an act who’ll definitely do well with her debut hour this year. From newcomers to comedy legends, my next show was with the comedic tour de force that is Nick Helm. Helm has been on the comedy scene for nearly 10 years now and he still flaunts a winning formula – start with some cheesy one liners, then mix in some songs and self-deprecating stories and you’ve got a guaranteed crowdpleaser. This year will be his return to the Fringe after a two year hiatus, and I can’t wait to see how he’s received by both audiences and critics alike. The final show I’m looking forward to seeing at the Fringe belongs to Adam Riches, who coincidentally won Best Show when I was on the comedy awards panel back in 2011. Whilst at ARG his performance was occasionally scripted and shaky in places, his idea of conducting a comedy ‘whodunnit’ involving audience members as interactive witnesses has bags of potential, and if executed correctly this show may be a real must-see at this year’s festival.

SAMM’S COMEDY CLUB Headlining the bill at SAMM’s on Bridge Street this month will be the provocative and politically charged Dane Baptiste, a London born stand up who made comedy history in 2014 as the first black British act to be nominated for a comedy award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The bill will also feature musical comedian Jenny Beake plus oneliner merchant Martin Westgate, as seen on Britain's Got Talent in 2018. Tickets are available by visiting the SAMM’s Facebook page.

LIGHTBOX COMEDY CLUB Funhouse Comedy Club returns to The Lightbox Café along Bridge Street this month for another great night out in Peterborough. Headlining the bill will be Barry Dodds, who’s received several nominations at the Midlands Comedy Awards and has previously supported Jason Manford and Tape Face whilst on tour. Joining him will be musical comic Ant Dewson, plus regular MC Stevie Grey. Tickets are available by visiting www.funhousecomedy.co.uk.

Peterborough Fringe Review! Last month I had the opportunity to attend the Peterborough Fringe, a special event organised by the Dawe Charitable Trust at the newly opened New Theatre which featured five Fringe-ready comedians performing in one day. I’m very much hoping the event will be held again next year as I thought it was a beneficial platform for comics to test their material before going to Edinburgh, plus it was a great chance for local audiences to enjoy live comedy and discover a new favourite comedian in the process. My own personal favourites from the line-up included Chris Norton Walker, whose one-liners and observations gained from the murky depths of Facebook Marketplace proved to be a success, however it was the musical comedian Tom Taylor who stole the show for me. Taylor’s surreal songs and offbeat delivery really stuck out from the crowd and I’d definitely say he’s one to watch if you’re looking for something different – think Bill Bailey plus the awkward yet relatable stage presence of Mark Watson (or even Joe Thomas from the most recent season of Taskmaster!). Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says...

Thorney Ready to go Live!

What a week of legends I had in the middle of July. I had my tickets for Tom Jones booked on launch day back in January. He was at the Posh ground on London Road, whatever it’s called now (The Barry Fry ABAX Weston Homes Auditorium?) Tom was superb. He started with a raunchy guitar driven blues number and did nearly 2 hours of a high class performance consisting of all his major hits stretching back to the sixties through to modern times. The man just oozes class and gravitas. He was backed by a high class band of brilliant musicians and the evening was a huge success for the whole audience. Even the rain stayed away when Tom walked onto the stage. Yet again congratulations are due to the guys at Peterborough United for the facilities and organisation that they provided for the concert. I hope they were inspired enough to try to bring more of this type of event to the city. My visit was planned for that but not to my other. I went for a holiday in Fuengirola the week before and on the first day there discovered that Rod Stewart was performing by the sea that evening. There were a few standing tickets left so we grabbed them. He was superb, featured some really talented female singer/dancers from Broadway shows, and did all his main hits in a spectacular 2 hour performance. It was a lucky chance to get tickets and my advice is if you get the chance, see these legends like Tom and Rod because they were at the start of all the live music that we know and love today. And they’ve still got that charisma and quality. Do it while they still can! 48 www.espmag.co.uk

It’s amazing to think that the Thorney Live Music Festival is in its 24th year and still going strong. It takes place as usual in The Bedford Hall and grounds on Sunday August 25 starting at 11.30am. The festival was the brainchild of Andy Stuffins who wanted to make the event one of the leading music festivals in the area, and also raise important funds for local and national charities. £67,000 has been raised so far and this year’s beneficiaries will be The Duke of Bedford School, Leukaemia UK and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Once again the organisers have assembled a

really strong line up of bands. The live music stage features six bands, each performing an hour set and begins at 12.30pm. The running order begins with the very versatile Deps who are followed on stage by party band Irene’s Secret and the 11 piece soul covers band, The Agents. There must have been a lot of thought into providing music for all tastes because these are followed at 4.30pm by rockabilly trio The Broadcasters and then punk and new wave from The Expletives. The final headline act is Flashback Photograph whose progress has been covered here in ESP and who are establishing a very strong reputation nationally. Great to see them closing the show at Thorney. The live stage acts are going to be cleverly glued together by appearances from local singer/songwriter, Andy Hughes, who is a very talented multi-instrumentalist and he’ll be performing in between bands. The day is aimed at the family with things for the youngsters and food and drink in abundant supply. You can catch the XL bus from Queensgate Bus Station Thorney and for any further information go to the website www.thorneylive.co.uk.

Brews and Tunes at the Beer Festival I can’t wait for this year’s Peterborough Beer Festival. It runs from Tuesday August 20 to Saturday August 24. I always look forward to seeing the list of acts booked and then deciding which of the big weekend nights I prefer. Whether it’s the Friday or Saturday is always a dilemma! (For some reason going both nights gives me some kind of ‘virus’ on the Sunday!).

N

o contest this year. For me it’s Friday. I was a long term admirer of The League of Mentalmen who I had the pleasure of working with a couple of times and I loved their show. They unfortunately split up a few years ago. But now there’s a return in the guise of Cap'n Rasty's Big Time Charlies featuring half of The League of Mentalmen. With the magnetic Cap’n Rasty , Mickey 9 Tails on guitar joining Droney Monotoney on bass and Harry Guantanamo on drums they promise to set pop classics to punk rhythms in a style that no one else would dare to. I’ll always remember them playing an Andy Williams ballad classic in a thrash metal style. This 4 piece energetic pop, punk, pirate band will kick off Friday evening promising to ‘murder love songs for the lost ‘n’ lonely’.

That’s just for starters. The headline act for Friday is Let There B/DC. I’ve always been a fan of AC/DC but there’s probably not much chance of seeing them tour again, so the Beer Festival gives fans the chance to see a band who share that love of the music. Let There B/DC were formed in 2011 and their current five man line-up have had AC/DC running through their veins since childhood. They’ve played at a number of venues in the area previously and their passion for the music injects the venom into every show that they play. The playlist obviously includes things like Highway to Hell, Whole Lotta Rosie and Thunderstruck together with rare and seldom heard album tracks. Now I appreciate that the Friday night may not be everyone’s taste in music but that’s what the Peterborough Beer Festival always

prides itself in. Over the week it brings us a real variation in musical choice. Following the first night regular feature of Stacey’s Open Mic night on Tuesday, two returnees to the Festival, Ramshackle Serenade on the Wednesday and Velocity on Thursday night. The latter are having a very busy and exciting time at the moment, with performances at F1 British Grand Prix and Moto GP at the Silverstone circuit, taking place either side of the Beer Festival. Saturday night brings soul and Britpop. First off, The Contacts, who’ve established themselves as a very popular soul band in the area bringing a select mix of upbeat Motown & Northern Soul to audiences that really want to dance! Then the headline act, Blurd. 2019 marks the 25th Anniversary of the release of the seminal Blur album, Parklife which was to feature in the UK Albums Chart for a massive 90 weeks and came

to define the emerging Britpop scene. What better way to celebrate this anniversary than to have the amazing Blurd closing this year’s Beer Festival, the UK's longest-running and most authentic tribute to Britpop legends Blur. Together since 2006, Blurd has performed as far afield as the Dublin Academy and the Isle of Wight Festival so they’re a fitting climax to the closing night on Saturday August 24. There is the usual variety of food, a funfair for everyone and of course the many beers, ciders, wines and gins to enjoy along with the music. I’m looking forward to it.

Goodbye The Guards – Hello Candy Twist

A couple of months ago I had a great evening watching The Guards. After the gig, I was talking to the guys and they revealed that they were intending to take on a new venture. They’ve been on the local scene for about 15 years and have now just recently completed farewell dates which rounded up in Stilton on July 20. Now that final Guards line-up will relaunch as a new band named Candy Twist. They’re a late sixties Psychedelic period covers band that will be playing across the region from August 25. The final Guards line-up has regenerated into Candy Twist. The line-up of the band is Jason Stevens (guitar/vocals), Rob Eustace (vocals/guitar), Jim Robertson (drums) and Steve Wilson (bass). I asked them why they’d decided to call time on such a popular band name and now that it was getting close to the change how they felt about bidding farewell to The Guards? Rob told me – “Whilst essentially a local band, The Guards, in its various incarnations, have been performing our eclectic set of covers at venues from Southend to Chester for nearly 15 years. It’s a sad farewell, and we’ll miss playing many of the songs that have gone down so well for so long, but collectively, we felt the time had come for us to offer something a little different.” I wondered why the name ‘Candy Twist’, and what can we expect from them in live gigs? Rob explained – “The Psychedelic sound of Candy Twist was born from a shared love of the late sixties, a period revolutionary in the evolution of popular music. Whilst we’ve adopted the psychedelia label, that handle probably is more representative of the period than the wide-ranging style of material we’ll be performing, of which psychedelia of course plays a part. Our live sets will be supported by totally original musical montages, hand crafted by the band themselves, laced with jingles, ads and

artefacts from the age, blending and weaving around sounds from the era. Lit with period appropriate lighting, and with more than a splash of Paisley fashioned for good measure, our aim is to make every ‘happening’ a complete, seamless, three-hour era experience, for venues and audiences alike.” Even though it’s the same band members who are used to performing with each other, starting a new band with a brand new set list must be a difficult process. “Yes and no,” says Rob “No, it’s been easy in that our love of the era means we genuinely have great affection for the material we’re performing, which we trust will be evident in our performances. But, yes, it’s been challenging, in that we’d forgotten just how much work is involved in choosing a band name and selecting a set of fifty songs, let alone actually rehearsing them!” It’s a lot of hard work to establish a new set list, but I suppose the guys have a good start to the new band, with an already established following. So, for those Guards fans who want to see Candy Twist, where is the debut? “We kick off with a big summer Bank Holiday launch gig, alfresco, weather permitting!” Rob told me. “It’s at the wonderful Black Horse in sleepy Elton on Sunday August 25. And we can’t wait for the date to arrive!” Beyond that there are performances scheduled at The Ploughman (Werrington), The Blue Bell (Dogsthorpe), The Ostrich (Peterborough) with further gigs taking them right up to Christmas. I wish them luck with Candy Twist and with all the hours of rehearsal. It’s nice to see the guys taking on a new challenge and you can check out all the latest information on their website www.candytwist.co.uk. Don’t put .com like I mistakenly did unless you want to meet an 18 year old from Russia!!
