The recent Pboro Vs Cancer charity footy match saw celebs take on local footy fans and organisers tell us it’s raised around ÂŁ12,500! Raphael Frascogna told ESP – “What was most pleasing is seeing what a great time everyone had, including the Peterborough community, 700 of whom came to support on the day.â€? The money raised will go to CLIC Sargent which provides a specialist package of support tailored to each young cancer patient and family. The popular annual charity football game took place at Yaxley Football Club with celebrities including football legend Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock, Jody Latham (Shameless), Thomas Turgoose (This is England), Joseph Valente (Apprentice winner), Colin MacLachlan (SAS hero) and many more. Playing against the celebs were 16 lucky locals who had bid for a place in the Public Team squad. After an intense game, the final score was 3-2 to the public side. WESTGATE TO GET MAKEOVER Westgate in the city centre could be next in line for £1.5million improvement works. The Westgate project is the next phase of the city council’s plans which have so far transformed the look and feel of Bridge Street, Long Causeway, Cathedral Square, St John's Square, Cowgate, Wheelyard and Midgate. A new traffic layout, wider pavement along one side, new lighting and street furniture will create a more
The Peterborough Garden Park site at Eye has been rebranded as Peterborough One Retail Park and the owners are promising a fresh look and some new events. It’s undergone significant improvements, and there are seasonal activities, craft fairs, frequent in-store promotions and events including a traditional car boot sale every Sunday. It’s had a complete rebrand, including a new user-friendly website and refreshed social media pages. There’s also the promise of new retailers and leisure providers, along with a new events programme. Peterborough One Retail Park’s Site Manager, Paul Dunn says: “We have a vision and a drive to develop the retail park into a top UK retail, social and leisure destination and we are working hard on exciting plans and initiatives to realise this vision. GIFT IMPROVES RAILWORLD Local charity Railworld Wildlife Haven has had some improvements courtesy of a donation by Peterborough City Council. Reclaimed street furniture including guard rails, cycle hoops and litter bins from the Lower Bridge Street improvement scheme have been given to the city tourist attraction. Brian Pearce, volunteer and chair of the board of Railworld trustees, said: “Over the past almost 30 years people giving their time voluntarily and secondhand gifts like these have led to the creation of a much improved environment for local wildlife and visitors alike.�
The charity’s proud of the thriving wildlife haven they've created in the 16 acres of inner city land originally acquired by Reverend Richard Paten back in 1985. The charity has strongly embraced the Circular Peterborough initiative, positioning themselves as the local champions of reuse and repurpose. Railworld has achieved a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor three years in a row.
NEW STORES @ SERPENTINE GREEN The new developments at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre are nearing completion with the extension opening up some new retail space. Costa Coffee will be the first to throw open its doors with the new NEXT store due to open mid August. Thomas Cook will be moving into the unit to the left of the new Costa in the new build and M&S Simply Food will be taking over the former NEXT store space.
THORPE HALL ART WEEK Local youngsters have put their own artistic spin on the incredible care provided to patients at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. And the results are set to be put on display at an exclusive art exhibition at the hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough. Year three pupils at West Town Primary School have been working with local artist Pippa Phillips to produce art work based on the question ‘What happens at Thorpe Hall?’ They’ll be showing off their creations during Thorpe Hall’s Art Week with doors open to the public between 10am and 4pm on Tuesday August 15, Wednesday August 16 and Thursday August 17. Visitors to the exhibition will be asked to vote for their favourite piece of work for the People’s Choice prize and be invited to explore the mansion house gardens on the Charlie Chimp Trail, You can view the exhibition for a suggested donation of ÂŁ2.

Former local radio broadcaster Sayeh Stone recently became a children’s author and has done so well she’s now having her very own book signing event in the city. Her book, Shaped Animals, is a great way to enjoy learning and remembering maths and shapes through storytelling and has proved popular with families. Sayeh will be reading the story and then running an activity session based on the book from 11am-12noon on Thursday August 31 at Waterstones, Peterborough. Since the book launched Sayeh has been busy visiting, reading and sharing her book at various schools and working on her next submission. This year’s Italian Festival is set to return with special guest, celebrity chef Aldo Zilli the star of the show.
Get your culture hit with classic pieces from Italian opera sung by Davide Sorrentino, Giuseppe Barile and Teresa De Roberto. Enjoy the flavours of Italy with wine making, Italian cakes from bakers such as La Rondini, and pizza from a range of specialist vendors as well as a tempting Italian market, confectionery, ice-cream and pasta. The Mediterranean extravaganza will also feature boxing demonstrations, football, classic Italian cars, motorcycles and scooters and lots more. The September festival will feature TV chef Aldo Zilli appearing on the Sunday afternoon for a chat on stage followed by a book signing and photo opportunities.

"Each year the festival grows in stature and I am sure people will be looking forward to the new additions to the weekend's line up including the performances from Laboratorio Orafolk and Shakespeare in Italy.” The Shakespeare in Italy project was inspired by an Italian Community Association publication, Aliens Order, which took its name from the certificate of registration and identity card that people arriving in the UK had to sign up to in the 1950s if they wanted to work in the country. The lively, colourful fun pop-up performances with a nod to Commedia Dell Arte, has reference to Shakespeare’s Italian plays including Romeo and Juliet, Othello and The Merchant of Venice. The festival runs on Heritage Open Day weekend and there will be an exhibition celebrating Peterborough's London Brick heritage at St John the Baptist Church in Church Street on the Saturday. A large number of Peterborough's Italian community worked for the London Brick Company. The festival runs from 12 noon to 5pm each day and we can’t wait.

Deeping’s Raft Race Ready to Make a Splash It’s almost impossible to believe that 55 years have passed since Deeping had its first raft race. The theme this year is Great Britain so be prepared to see red, white and blue everywhere! Peterborough Summer Regatta If the Olympics appeal to you, then this is your event! The rowing regatta held at Thorpe Meadows attracts over seven hundred competitors from all around the country and expects to see a huge crowd. With Peterborough being one of few fortunate cities that have their own rowing lake, the Summer Regatta will see the full 1000m length in use for races. Whittlesey Festival Coming Soon! The Whittlesey Festival is set to make a huge return once again and now in its tenth year, the centre of the town will be alive next month with a huge variety of stalls, fun activities and rides for children.
Pack your sunglasses, put on your sunscreen and join Thomas the Tank Engine on the Nene Valley Railway’s Riviera for an activity packed summer holiday! You can join Thomas from 9am – 4.30pm on Saturday August 12 and Sunday August 13. You can ride behind the star himself as he hauls the Holiday Train from Peterborough all the way down to Wansford and stop of at different stations for a range of fun, free activities. Outdoor Screenings and Theatre @ Sacrewell Sacrewell has a fantastic events programme throughout the year and the summer is especially busy. During the school holidays, there are a whole range of fun seasonal activities that range from outdoor theatre performances to bug hunting. They are host to events such as pond dipping, duck races, the ever popular Lamb National and they will run all throughout the holidays until September 3.

Summer Holiday Fun @ Springfields Springfields Outlet Shopping in Spalding has a fantastic line-up of entertainment planned for the kids this summer holiday. It’s been a long time coming but hopefully we’re about to see Bridge Street in our city centre finally spring to life and in particular during the evenings. The various improvement works in Lower Bridge Street are now complete and this has sharpened up the aesthetics of one of the main gateways to our city centre. Business has already improved for Dominoes – I even stumbled in there on a drunken night out a few weeks ago (I hope they’ve since erased CCTV footage). But it’s the main part of Bridge Street that’s enjoying something of a renaissance. The vacant M&S premises has been given a new lease of life by B&M Stores, the Met

Lounge – despite not being able to attract the 18 to 20 crowd (refer to last month’s column) – looks busier than ever and the addition of outside seating at Puzzles? Bar has really seen it lift off this summer. It all started with Argo Lounge. It’s my kind of place and there are certain times on a Friday and Saturday night that being in there gives me a tingle, just like I used to get in The Bar, which brought contemporary drinking and dining to Peterborough back in the day. Next month Argo will have a new neighbour in the form of Middletons Steakhouse and Grill and this is sure to be another quality addition to our excellent restaurant offering. But the best news is that an application for a new Bridge Street bar (for the over 25s) has been submitted to the city council. If successful, the former EE shop under the Town Hall will be transformed into the Lightbox Café Bar, which will be the perfect

And further along in St John’s Square the ‘Pizzaborough’ effect continues to spread. In recent years wood burning pizza ovens have been manufactured to a standard that overcomes potential air extraction and pollution issues and this has seen a rise in restaurants offering pizza cooked the traditional way. The Pizza Parlour and Music Café in Cowgate were the first to bring back the log oven and we now have another eatery open with a wood fired oven around the corner on Queen’s Street. The former Clarkes fine dining restaurant is now called The Queen’s Head, which is a Charles Wells Brewery Pizza, Pots and Pints concept pub. Across the road is recently opened Turtle Bay. We’ve never had it so good.

New Boxing Gym for City’s Youth

A partnership between Peterborough’s most successful boxing coach and the city council has exceeded expectations to the point of needing a dedicated gym.
Kevin Sanders has been working with the city council to help channel young people’s energy and spare time into boxing training, which is teaching them to become more focused, disciplined and respectful. Regular classes were being held at Vic’s Gym but growing numbers of young people wanting to attend the sessions has led Kevin to opening his own gym in Alfric Square, Woodston. The grand opening of the

I’m all for keeping and restoring old buildings where possible and it’s great to know the old Whitworth Mill, which sits on the new Fletton Quays site, will benefit from an Arts Council England grant that’ll cover the first phase of its redevelopment. Structural changes and external fit out is scheduled to be complete by next summer and it’s all thanks to the city council being awarded £490,000 towards the redevelopment of the 19th century building. The project will convert the building into an arts and culture hub, whilst also providing a new home for Metal Peterborough. It’ll include artist studios, rehearsal spaces, workshops, conference and networking facilities, overnight residency accommodation and a creative and digital business incubation hub. Arts Council England have clearly got a lot of dough, so maybe someone could put in a bid to redevelop 5th Avenue? It’s been stood empty for so long that it’s become a breeding house for pigeons. Cheers to 40 years! There are certain local events throughout the year I look forward to. The Christmas lights switch-on and Firework Fiesta are right up there on the list. Though in my opinion, nothing tops the Peterborough Beer Festival. The popular annual event is celebrating its 40th birthday this summer and we’re all invited to the party. To celebrate the anniversary, we took to our social networking pages asking for photos of you and your friends at some point during the last 40 years. We had a great response and as you can see, we’ve featured some here! We feel they highlight the fantastic atmosphere of the Festival – which I can’t wait for. Lunchtimes and early evenings are the ideal time to take the family, as there’s always an easy going, friendly atmosphere. You can take the dog (on a lead), the picnic table, food and soft drinks but you must not take your own alcohol for obvious reasons. There is even a fairground for all to enjoy.

French crepes, hog roast, kebabs, as well as traditional pub snacks like Pipers crisps, olives, pork pies and Scotch eggs. For those with a sweet tooth seek out the popular sweet stall or (if brave) try the scorpion chilli chocolate! Anyone else drooling thinking about it all? Just me?
2) Taking in the atmosphere. I can’t stress enough how fantastic the atmosphere is. Take a moment to stop and take it in. Listen out for the laughter and take in the conversations happening around you because – as we all know – plenty of booze can lead to some pretty random/hilarious topics. 1) Beer Judging! Since the birth of ESP Magazine we have always been a part of the popular annual event and we couldn’t be more proud to see it still going strong after all this time. We've run numerous quizzes at the festival and one year we even teamed up with Oakham Ales, who brewed us our very own ESP beer. We’re also involved in the Beer Judging, which ultimately crowns the Champion Ale! I will once again be judging on behalf of the mag (it’s a tough job but someone has to do it!) and I promise to try and make you all proud with my scoring. The Peterborough Beer Festival will once again be held on the River Embankment on August 22 – 26 and of course ESP will be there to cover all of the action. A new food and drink venue opens in Peterborough this month. Charles Wells Brewery is bringing us its award-winning Pizza, Pots and Pints brand with the opening of The Queen’s Head with a pre-launch on Thursday August 17. The former Clarkes (and before that HG’s) building in Queen’s Street in the city centre has been transformed into a more open and airy layout and will feature a wood fired oven for its tasty sounding pizzas.
We’re told it won’t be your typical pub or restaurant but has its own special vibe providing great beer, great food as well as deals and special events, sometimes with a quirky twist!
The concept’s already proved popular in Cambridge and Baldock and Peterborough is the third to open. A spokesperson told ESP – “Everything we do is lovingly handmade by our talented chefs and suppliers from our freshly made artisan pizzas, cooked onsite in our wood-fired ovens, and warming terracotta pots of comfort food like mac ‘n’ cheese, to pints of fresh Bedfordshire-brewed beer. “On top of this, our local community is very important to us. We host events and menu deals designed to suit our local guests so there will always be something happening at The Queen’s Head that the people of Peterborough can be a part of. Pizza, Pots and Pints is all about great food and drink that can be shared in a fun, friendly, and sometimes crazy place.” The main public launch weekend of August 19 and 20 will see free pizza for the first 500 bookings so make sure you get your name down and don’t miss out!

The much anticipated Middleton’s Steak House and Grill is due to open the doors of its Peterborough restaurant on Friday September 8 and we can’t wait. As the face of some of our most popular TV shows, it’s hard to remember that Caroline was once as known for her eventful Sarah Tempest love life as for the TV shows she presented. But those well publicised flings with One Direction’s Harry Styles (14 years her junior – go Caroline!) and Prince Harry, as well as a short lived engagement, are but a distant memory as Caroline has continued to show us that she’s more than just a pretty face (and an incredible pair of legs!) and is now giving Emma Willis a run for her money as the ‘go to’ popular female presenter. Beginning her career as ‘Bubbles’ on Bo Selecta, Caroline’s career then took her to presenting children’s TV programmes before moving into popular television, from Big Brother’s Little Brother, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here NOW! and the Xtra Factor; before teaming up with Olly Murs to take over from Dermot O’Leary as host on the X Factor. And this current series of Love Island, Caroline’s third as host, has proved to be the most successful ever, with 2.2million of us tuning in to find out which perfect bodied person is getting it on with which perfect bodied person – and who’s going to be banished to the departure lounge to catch the first Easyjet home. But whilst her presenting talents have never been in question, it was Caroline’s 2014 stint on the 12th series of Strictly Come Dancing that really showed us what she was made of. Partnering (ESP favourite) Pasha Kovalev (he loves cheese and building computers – you heard it here first!), Caroline went on to win the show after scoring a perfect 40 in all three of her final dances; the only contestant in the history of the show to have done so and a record that still stands today. And now Caroline is all set to strap on her dancing shoes once again and take to the stage, as she prepares to star in Crazy For You, alongside Holby City and Casualty actor (and fellow former Strictly winner) Tom Chambers.

She may still be shaking the sand out of her sarong having spent several weeks in Majorca fronting the sun, sea, sex and shenanigans that is ITV 2’s Love Island, but TV presenter Caroline Flack will have barely enough time to screw the lid on her aftersun before she’ll be back and throwing herself into a brand new challenge. And it’s a challenge that is as daunting as it is exciting, as ESP reporter Sarah Tempest has been finding out…

PLANET B – Green Festival is here!
Peterborough is home to one of the longest running and largest Green Festivals in the UK, and this year it takes on a new life as ‘Planet B’. The environmental charity PECT, working alongside arts organisation Metal and The Green Backyard and with funding from Arts Council England, will be running Planet B from Saturday July 29 through to Saturday August 12. It includes events, performances, film screenings, workshops, commissioned artworks, and a conference – all
around encouraging discussion and debate on sustainability. BASTON in the BLITZ Now in its fourth year, the organisers promise that Baston in the Blitz will be bigger and better than ever on August 5 and 6. Every aspect of the event’s been expanded so expect more than fifty vintage traders, forty-eight WW2 living history displays and hundreds of WW2 re-enactors. There’ll be live firepower demonstrations and the realistic live battle re-enactments on both days. Their authentic Great Escape P.O.W. Experience shows what life was like for prisoners during WW2. This year Martin Willoughby’s Avro Lancaster bomber fuselage will be on display as a centrepiece and you’ll have the rare opportunity of exploring the Lancaster’s flight deck. Terry Arlow’s Spitfire Mk.IX will also make a return and you can have a photo in the cockpit. The ever-popular non-stop live 1940’s entertainment from the UK’s top male and female vintage performers will run continuously throughout both days. British stalwart Idris Elba headlines this science-fantasy-western – which is a continuation of the popular Stephen King novel series. It’s intended that The Dark Tower will revert to a TV series depending on how well the movie is received – so there’s pressure on Elba to see whether he really has got that star quality Hollywood big-screen presence to pull it off. He portrays Roland Deschain, known as The Gunslinger, who roams an ‘Old West’ style landscape in a post-apocalyptic world searching for the fabled Dark Tower – a mythical structure which supports all realities as the nexus point between time and space – which he hopes will save all existence from extinction. Along the way Roland calls upon 11year-old Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) – whose mother is played by Vikings’ starlet Katheryn Winnick – to help him on his quest, but with various creatures and the infamous ‘Man in Black’ (Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, they soon realise their journey will be fraught with danger. It will be interesting to see if this builds into something special, or will just fade into darkness . . .

Film Music Gala to celebrate 80 years of cinematic history…
THE ODEON RE-UNITED
One of Peterborough’s most iconic buildings (The Broadway Theatre formerly the Odeon Cinema) celebrates its 80th birthday this September. To mark the occasion the BBC Concert Orchestra will perform live on stage in a spectacular musical salute to Hollywood’s greatest ever composers.
Many former Odeon staff and patrons are set to attend the event including the cinema’s longest-serving manager Michael Turner. Turner (pictured holding the 50th Anniversary cake in 1987) was the Peterborough Odeon’s general manager from 1976-1989 and rejuvenated the cinema’s fortunes during one of the most exciting eras in movie history. It will be the first time he’s set foot in the building since leaving in 1989 to run the Ipswich Odeon. Now retired to the Suffolk countryside and speaking to ESP he said – “The opportunity to celebrate the building’s history is something I really think I need to come back for. I had the happiest times of my career with the Odeon in Peterborough and it doesn’t get much bigger than having the BBC Concert Orchestra perform for the occasion.”
Eighty years to the day since the theatre opened as Peterborough’s first custombuilt cinema – the Odeon – on 2nd September 1937, with the exotically titled and very popular Hollywood romantic comedy Theodora Goes Wild, the concert will pay tribute to the long heritage of the building which operated as a cinema for over 50 years and continues to be an important and muchloved landmark in the city’s cultural landscape. n that day at Wembley Stadium, we overcame Chesterfield 3-1 in front of close to 20,000 Posh fans and as previous winners of the competition, we have often been canvassed for our opinion on the format of the trophy. I think most people will accept that last year, the introduction of under 23 sides from Category One sides divided opinion. Crowds dwindled and interest in the trophy was at an all-time low, however, the revenue stream that it can provide means you can never dispense with the idea. The concept could be adapted. Last month, myself and manager Grant McCann, who was in that Posh side that lifted the trophy three years ago, headed down to a posh hotel in London for a media briefing and the final group stage draw of the first round of this year’s competition. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out how new life has been breathed into the competition. Posh are in a group with local rivals Northampton Town and Cambridge
United with one of the best Academies in the country, Southampton, also joining the mix. I’ve worked at the club for just over 15 years and during that time, we’ve never played Cambridge United in a competitive fixture. I can’t wait. I know that the fans can’t wait either. The game will be played at the Abbey Stadium in November, yet I have had more questions about prices and arrangements than any other fixture. The gaffer is excited too. “I think that everybody is looking forward to it, I know I am and I know the players are. We haven’t played Cambridge since 2001 so when you have that length of time between games, it builds the excitement level. We want to win the game and we want to go as far in the tournament as we can.” I know that the chairman Darragh MacAnthony wants to win the Checkatrade Trophy. And the league. You have to have ambition. You have to have a dream. Reach for the moon and fall among the stars is my motto. We will give it a right good go.

he’s caught my eye more than once and I’m not proud to admit it, but I followed her to the Baston Car and Bike show last month. She knew it though and loved the chase. I was loitering next to where she’d parked and then she flung open her door to invite me in for some flirty chat...
Clara, you're obviously not from around Peterborough. Do you come here often? “Hi Peppino, you’re looking swell. Hope you don’t mind me calling you Peppino ‘cause I think it’s kinda cute… I'm actually from the GM Buick factory in Framingham, 34 www.espmag.co.uk
Massachusetts, USA. My first carer, an older gentleman, bought me from Haus Buick of Brattleboro, Vermont. My second carer was the Prouty family in South Londonderry, Vermont and they took great care of me using me sparingly, mainly for parades, processions, proms and special occasions – hence my original 18,000 miles. In 2005 a man called Richard Allman of Naugatuck, Connecticut, took over my care up until 2016 and in those 11 years he added a further 11,000 careful miles on me. Due to retirement Richard felt it was time for someone else to care for me and that’s when a deal was struck to bring me across the
pond to Great Britain and ultimately Peterborough. Once customs clearance was done I set sail from New Jersey and after approximately five weeks of rough seas, I arrived here!” Peppino’s fine – and Clara's a lovely name – do you know where it came from? “It was a kind of tradition back in the day to name a new car after the lady of the house, so in my case I became ‘Clara’ after Mrs Clara Prouty, who sadly passed away in March of this year aged 86.” I reckon you could do a bit of modelling work with that curvy figure of yours. Do you mind sharing your vital statistics with me? “I’m officially a Buick Super Riviera four door sedan. I’m one of the first to be fitted with the legendary ‘Nailhead V8’ and have a slick Dynaflow gearbox for a smooth ride. I carry five people – six including the driver –
and another two in the trunk (if we were sneaking into a drive-in movie!). As you can see I’m not overly long or wide, I’d say I’m just right. And when you get my motor running I’m good for a top speed of 105 miles per hour. Not bad eh?” Yes, impressive. I quite like experienced ladies. Can I ask how old you are? “Oooh Peppino you know you should never ask a lady her age but as it’s you, I’m 64 years old, born on 26 June 1953.” So, if you don’t mind me asking, have you had any cosmetic surgery? “Let’s just say I'm almost all original and a natural beauty with all the right curves just like Jayne Mansfield. In 1953 my chrome plating was put on a little thinner to help with the Korean war effort, so some of us mature ladies from that time have poor chrome. For that reason, I had my rear bumper re-chromed. Then in 2012 a snow avalanche fell from a house onto my roof, so sadly my head was re-painted. Apart from those two bits I’m the real deal Peppino.” We all know how important it is to have an annual health MOT. How did yours go?

What's your idea of a perfect day out? “A dry sunny day cruising quiet roads with not too much traffic and a little bit of Doo Wop or blues playing in the background. Maybe attending a fete or car show where I can talk to people and share stories of yesteryear, perfect.” Is that how you met that bubble-gum pink '57 Chevy I’ve seen you hanging around with? What's that all about? “Oh yeah that's ‘Teddy the ‘57 Chevy’. He’s awesome looking and wow, have you heard how loud he can growl? Magnificent! But no need to be jealous Peppino, I can assure you he’s just a friend. He’s not my type, too young and boisterous. He’s been in Peterborough a little longer than me and has kindly been showing me around and introducing me to various people. Not that I'm one to gossip, but I heard he’s just finished doing a film shoot. I’ll tell you more, but not on the record.”
Don’t Miss These Classics! Now we’re well into the summer it’s worth pencilling in some classic car show dates for your diary that are too good to miss. Sunday August 13 is the Boston Classic Car Club Annual Show. The event takes place in Graves Park, Kirton and it’s always a great event for attracting vehicles from the north of our region, which you don’t see too much at shows closer to home. Sunday August 27 is the turn of the annual Stamford Car Show to put on another car packed event. This is always well attended by owners and visitors alike and is organised by the Stamford and District Round Table. It’s free entry and just over 500 vehicles will be on display, all bidding to win awards at the judging ceremony on the day. And finally, it took years for Peterborough to host its own annual event but it was well worth the wait. The Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show on the city’s riverside Embankment is now in its fourth year and growing. More than 500 vehicles have registered for the weekend (September 2 and 3) and organisers Peterborough City Council are still taking entries via their website. It’s shaping up to be the biggest weekend show of its kind in East Anglia and is open to caravans, motorcycles, scooters, commercial and agricultural vehicles, buses, ex-military and other forms of transport from yesteryear to modern classics.
Rocket Performance in Red Bull Soapbox Challenge Congratulations to the team from Viridor’s Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) who finished 30th out of 69 competitors at the Red Bull Soap Box Challenge. Their ‘Refuse Rocket’, which was practically made from a Sulo bin and reclaimed materials, navigated the downhill challenge by reaching a terrifying top speed of 25mph! The team also raised awareness and funds for local children’s brain tumour charity Anna’s Hope. Carole Hughes, founder of Anna’s Hope, told me: “It was an amazing event to watch and I was so proud of the team and their performance. I am grateful they chose to support
Anna’s Hope and as a result we got some wonderful coverage on national television. Cleansing isn’t just for the winter months, and castor oil isn’t just an old fashioned remedy…
One of my old favourites is using castor oil packs. Using castor oil therapeutically has been common amongst many naturopathic practitioners for years. I was first introduced to this and many other natural gifts over 20 years ago when I studied nutrition and naturopathy and have used these in my practice, and retreats ever since. You can use it topically (not ingested) to treat skin issues such as acne, athletes foot, inflamed joints, dry skin on cracked heels and elbows as well as a range of other conditions. Castor oil uses have dated back to early Egyptian times, used by many folk healers and popularised by the psychic healer Edgar Cayce and used by many naturopaths worldwide. I’ve used castor oil in the form of a ‘castor oil pack’ which can help increase the absorption into the skin. For me this is the best application when working with detoxification, liver/gallbladder clearing, period pains etc.
What you need to make a castor oil pack •
A high quality cold pressed castor oil
•
A cotton flannel large enough to be folded over a couple of times and still cover a good area of the abdomen i.e. placed over liver/gallbladder area.

Hot water bottle or a heat pad
•
An old towel placed to protect the surface you’re going to rest on from the oil
•
Plastic zip up bag to place the used oiled flannel in for further use, if reusing all you have to do is add more oil to the flannel and use again as needed.
How to make a castor oil pack I like to place the flannel I’ll be using under the hot water bottle to warm it for 5 mins, then add the castor oil until it’s soaked through but not dripping. Place the flannel over the area you wish to treat such as liver or lower abdomen for period pains etc, then place the hot water bottle or heat pad on top. Place another old towel over the top, wrap in a blanket to keep warm. You can then lie there for 45-60mins, read, listen to music, meditate or whatever you want to do to relax.

ugust has to be one of the most social months of the year with festivals, parties, weddings, hen/stag parties, BBQ’s and of course holidays. It always feels like a month of freedom and lightness, however that’s far from how the body feels. We often feel toxic over those winter months after the Christmas excess but mid summer also takes its toll on our health. More alcohol (probably more than the short period of Christmas), and of course hotter weather and less sleep, all contribute to dehydration. Add to this the BBQs, holiday foods and eating your own body weight in ice-cream and it’s highly likely that you feel tired, sluggish, heavy, bloated, irritable and out of sorts! Of course there are more high water content fruits and vegetables at this time
of year but a scattering of strawberries or salad leaves on your plate can’t always compete against the other unfavourable foods/drinks that we’re chugging down the gut in the heat. Water of course is key, maybe an extra glass or two than you would in the winter. A good pick-me-up in the summer is needed as much as during those winter months. A day or two (or longer if you can) of raw foods – salads, juices, smoothies, fruits etc will not only help bowels improve, but also hydrate, nourish and support cleansing and try and reduce your intake of bread, red meat, alcohol and caffeine. There are many other natural therapeutic approaches such as saunas, yoga/pilates etc, colonics (see below for my August only offer) and more.

When finished, remove the flannel and wipe the skin with a clean cloth and soap/water mix. You may also want to wear an old T-shirt as once this oil is on the material it rarely comes off. Clay Pigeon Shooting For Father's Day a few weeks back, I was a bit stuck for ideas for my dad and likewise something nice for me to do with my children Ethan and Oonagh-Mae. I prefer to give experiences and memories as gifts rather than stuff and things.
My partner Sarah and I had been regularly passing a new site of some sort developing halfway between Thorney and Newborough on Bukehorn Road and then realised it was a new Clay Pigeon Shooting venue. Wow, this was it! A perfect Father's Day treat. Plus we could also book me in as a treat from my own children, lucky me! (So that was very thoughtful of them.) So after finding them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Bukehorn we booked in a few places for a promising Dads 'n' Lads day. The motley crew was made up of me

and my dad, my son, brother and also my girlfriend's dad Terry. Upon arrival we were met by the owners and family members running the registration process and they were all very welcoming and nice to chat to. There was a food and drinks stand so I could imagine it could be nice to spend a leisurely afternoon there, shooting and spectating. The weather was great and we were excited and ready to have a go an see how well we could do. There was an underlying manly competitiveness brewing, and my brother was already counting up the clays, sizing up the guns and quietly getting his game face on. We love a bit of healthy competition! We signed ourselves in, were given a safety briefing, and then proceeded to the shelters where we'd shoot from where a very lovely chap ran through the process. The instructor was fantastic; very patiently, calming and enthusiastically talking each one of us through our turns, adjusting our stance, how we held the gun, advising how to look down the barrel with one eye or two and getting everything just right. I didn't know I was right-eyed until I learned this that day. Being left or right-eyed affects how you look down the barrel to the clays so it was handy to know. With his remote control he'd release the clays on a three-count and as if we had all the time in the world would be like a gunman whisperer, gently telling us "well done", "slow down", "don't panic". All credit to him for the patience you just need in order to watch people miss so many times!
However, as we each worked through our batch of shots we all hit enough clays to be pretty satisfied with ourselves. Terry turned out to be a dark horse, hitting about ten-in-a-row to finish big and steal the show. Needless to say, he reminded me to treat his daughter well as he's a bloody good shot! Message received Terry... We had a great time and would love to go back again soon. For now there are only select dates available as the current licence only allows so many shooting days per year but they'll hopefully soon be able to increase this. I'd definitely recommend this as a great novel treat for a sunny weekend and to book ahead to make sure you get the dates, you'll have a great time. Sports Connections Foundation Former professional Premier League player Junior McDougald has put his passion for football to good use using his skills and contacts to create a charity supporting disadvantaged youngsters. Junior the superstar is just a regular guy – “It’s still hard to believe he’s one of the most famous, recognised people on the planet – and what I love is I bumped into him when we were doing a Sporting Wish in LA – and he hasn’t changed at all. He’s really down to Earth.” As well as mixing with the celebs Junior has had his own time in the limelight both as a player and on the Sky One football drama Dream Team back in the late 90s. But it all could have been very different.

ESP has teamed up with the charity to promote its work and has been given unique access to some of its celebrity ambassadors. We’ve already caught up with Jeff Brazier and Craig Mackail-Smith, and will be talking to more in future, but for this issue it’s time to meet one of the main men behind SCF. Junior’s passion is evident – “It’s a calling not a job,” he tells us. “There are so many disadvantaged and vulnerable children that don’t get the support they need – to transform the life of a child is just the best thing ever.” Sports Connections Foundation works in schools delivering projects such as its ProKick Schools Challenge, Inspire Through Sports programme, mentoring as well as fundraising for an orphanage in West Africa and also delivers Sporting Wishes for children with life threatening conditions. Junior knows first hand how easy it is to have a poor start and head down the wrong path, so he’s determined to help provide youngsters with some strong role models and help identify the kids who need extra support. He grew up on a typical council estate, his mum went to prison and as a child he was regularly fostered. Discovering a talent for football was his way out. It led to him training and playing with a generation of footballing stars including the likes of Sol Campbell and David Beckham. This provided him with a wealth of life long friends he can call upon to support his charity work. Not many can claim to have trained and played with David Beckham but to

“I wasn’t academic and I soon got into trouble,” admits Junior, “but discovering I could play football was my way out and my life began to change. But if I’m one in 2,000 that make it as a pro, what about all those others who don’t? “I wanted to be a positive role model and help children like me.” That’s something he’s been determined to fulfil with SCF. The ProKick schools challenge uses sport to help and
inspire children. They raise money which is divided between the school and the orphanage in Africa which in turn promotes global citizenship. When the school children see how poor youngsters elsewhere in the world still love football playing with a ball made of rolled up elastic bands, the fact their fundraising helps provide football equipment is a real eye opener. “It’s lovely showing kids here what a difference they can make. It’s a small charity with a big reach,” says Junior. SCF are holding a triathlon style event called the Cycle, Splash and Dash at the David Lloyd health club in Cambridge on August 20 to raise more money for their Sporting Wishes and you can sponsor the event on www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charit y/sports-connections/cyclesplashdash Next month you’ll see SCF in action in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre which we’ll tell you more about in the next issue. August is festival month and therefore it provides a rich source of live music. So I thought it would be worthwhile previewing what you can expect at five of the main festivals in and around Peterborough. In addition to The Peterborough Beer Festival there is The Thorney Music Festival, The Water Newton Festival, The Green Meadows Festival and the return of Randall Rootz!

Green Meadows Music Festival The grounds of Elton Hall in the village of Elton, once again will host The Green Meadows Festival on the weekend of August 11-13. The Green Meadows Festival first took place in 2012 and was originally set up with the intention of raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. There is a wide variety of music and activities, featuring established acts and unsigned bands, whilst also showing festivals can be affordable without compromising on facilities and quality. The organisers have donated a total of over £5,500 to the TCT so far, and through the donation buckets spread around the site expect more this year. activities. Also, due to the vast expanse of fields surrounding Elton Hall, camping is available over the weekend. Three fields are available for camping with one set aside for families, which boasts flushing toilets and showers and even a kids’ cinema! There are multiple activity areas and stages for the music and headliners on The Meadow stage this year include The Sugarhill Gang Ft Melle Mel and the Furious 5, Reverend and the Makers and Stereo MCs. Cheers For 40 Years @ Beer Fest! It’s the 40th anniversary of the Peterborough Beer Festival this year. As always the big marquees on Peterborough’s Embankment will host over 400 real ales, ciders, wine and bottle beers, all with strange sounding names. I hear also that the organisers are embracing the latest gin craze and will for the first time have a Gin Bar which will be bringing you a range of around 20 different and unique gins to sample. (Goodo!). Although the festival attracts many visitors to the city over the week, this really is one of the most important social gatherings of the year for Peterborough people. Thousands of locals will attend whatever the weather and there’s always a fantastic vibrant atmosphere all through the week. This year the festival runs from Tuesday to Saturday August 22 –26 and the live music on offer is really exciting. On Thursday, newcomers to the Beer Festival stage are The Ouse Valley Singles Club who produce a memorable live show. They’re one of the most original outfits currently doing the live circuit. Heavily influenced by the sounds and traditions of 1950’s skiffle, they combine this long forgotten genre with the energy of punk, whilst occasionally dropping some reggae urban flavours into the mix and then layering this with hilarious folk-like story-telling. These are preceded by the energetic Tom Wright Band. Tom is a 21 year old, local singer-songwriter, and has just released his debut album. His act is always full of energy and superb guitar playing. Traditionally the big night features three favourites of the festival, (in order of appearance) The Palmerston Ukulele Band, Retrolux and the Rocket Dogs. A great night in the music tent! And on Saturday, there really is a great variety of music genres throughout the day, for instance from 2pm where The Band of Tramps take the stage we have in order of appearance The Fedz, All Shook Up, Ramshackle Serenade, and headlining at 9.15pm, The Motor City Vipers. What a final night! Very fitting to the 40th anniversary of the Peterborough Beer Festival and really the only problem is deciding which nights to attend. Water Newton Music Festival
Water Newton Music Festival is back after a year’s break, and it takes place on the village green on Bank Holiday Sunday August 27. The line-up has now been finalised and includes: Pennyless, Wansford Ukulele Folk, The Gangsters, Latino Sound, and Gone to The Dogs. Gates will open at 12 noon with live music commencing at 1pm through to 7.30pm. Great ‘street food’ is on offer, together with fresh wood fired pizzas. There’ll be a wine and beer tent with real ales supplied by Castor Ales plus a Pimms and Bubbles bar.
This is a charity gig with all profits going to Friends of St Remigius to help maintain and improve the ancient church in the village on the banks of the River Nene. The organisers recommend taking your own chairs and sunshades. What could be better on a Bank Holiday than to follow that advice, place the chair on the village green and soak up the atmosphere of a real English countryside festival along with friends and family. Randall Roots Returns
As reported exclusively in last month’s ESP, the Randall Rootz Festival is returning to Peterborough this summer, over the weekend of August 18, 19 & 20 and the line-up looks like a veritable feast of local talent and musicianship. Now in its 10th year, the event first ran in 2007 to commemorate the life of local musician and music promotor, Mark Randall. From that initial ‘get together’ of friends and family, the weekend’s grown into a three-day event, with all profits being raised for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. While the Saturday and Sunday daytime events are completely free of charge, the Friday night kicks off at The Brewery Tap as an exclusive ticket-only show featuring the UK’s only Pogues tribute band, The Dead Rabbits, (think Dirty Old Town, Fairytale Of New York, The Irish Rover, Fiesta etc). Supported by reformed local acoustic/rock heroes, Angryman, with whom Mark Randall’s musical talents were also very much associated with. Tickets are limited and priced at just £10 each, available from the venue on 01733 358500. After Friday night’s shenanigans, the event moves over to the open sunny space of Charters beer garden from midday Saturday and Sunday. Totally free of charge and very family-friendly, the full line-up of around 20 bands includes the fantastic Palmerston Ukulele Band, The Chris Watson Sound (jazz/blues/latin), Ramshackle Serenade (swingbilly), Lexie Green (blues/rock), Heather McVey (acoustic soul), Dan Donovan (bluesy delta swamp), Americana (country/rock), local reggae masters Zeb Rootz, plus many, many more… Event organiser, Andy Whittaker told me – “The difficulty this year hasn’t been about which bands and musicians to include, but who to exclude. “We’ve been blown away by the good will shown by local acts, some of which have given up lucrative shows to be here over the weekend, so whoever turns up to watch and listen are in for a real treat. We’ve also been delighted by local companies such as PPS Print and RA Baker Glaziers sponsoring our efforts and would like to say a big thank you to them too – including ESP of course!” The weekend events start each day at midday. The Bluetones Are Back
Brit Pop band, The Bluetones, are scheduled for a nostalgic return to The Met Lounge in Bridge Street, on Friday August 11. All four original members, Mark Morriss, Adam Devlin, Scott Morriss and Eds Chesters are heading to Peterborough this month to mark their 20th anniversary together. It’s their 5th appearance at The Met, the previous shows in 2003 and 2005 were all sell outs – the band becoming the first band ever to sell out four consecutive shows at the club. The Bluetones, who were a huge part of the Brit Pop era, were always an engaging and dynamic live outfit. Fronted by the enigmatic Mark Morriss, they had an impressive run of hit singles that included the Bluetonic, Slight Return, Marblehead Johnson, Solomon Bites The Worm, If and Keep the Fires Burning. Thorney Goes Live
As always, the day after the Beer Festival closes, sees the annual Thorney Live Music Festival. This is the twenty-second year of the event and once again takes place in the grounds of the Bedford Hall, Thorney, on Sunday August 27. The event, originated by organiser Andy Stuffins, has raised in excess of £60,000 for charity in its 21 years and that figure is bound to increase due to the quality of the line-up which includes: Third Stone From The Sun, Up The Function, Grounded, The Mesh Band, Brotherhoods Roundabout, Amy Palmer and The Motor City Vipers.
The gates open at 11.30 with the first band on at 12.30 and the entertainment continues through to dusk. There’s a licensed bar, hot food and drink, children's inflatables and stalls on the site and the charity beneficiaries this year are Cancer Research UK, NGNPUK and Thorney Ex Servicemen Club. The Club have been heavily involved in the event from its early days and have provided much needed resources to ensure the success of the Festival.
