SLAVIMO 90. RODENDAN Celebrating our 90th year IVICA MAX KRIZMANIĆ generalni direktor hotela Esplanade / General Manager of the Esplanade Hotel Ovaj broj časopisa posvećen je zagrebačkoj ljepotici i, mogu reći, Prvoj dami hotelijerstva –Esplanadi, koja ove godine obilježava svoj okrugli 90. rođendan. Zagrebački međunarodni festival vina i kulinarstva održati – a gdje drugdje – u prostorima hotela Esplanade. Stoga smo u ovom broju spominjali one najatraktivnije: Ljeto na Štrosu, Cest is d’Best, INmusic festival i Zagrebački vremeplov.
This particular issue is dedicated to a certain Zagreb beauty, the hotel industry’s First Lady - the Esplanade, which this year proudly celebrates its 90th year. Every year on the exact same date, (April 22) we fondly pay homage to the day the hotel first opened its doors to its very first guests. This year however, is somewhat special as we really hit a nice round figure. All of us who work under the hotel’s roof (and for some who won’t admit how long exactly) are exceptionally proud to play a part in the impressive history of this iconic building. It’s just great to know that every day we create such beautiful experiences for our guests that will forever remain in their memories, and actively support culture and sports as we happily contribute to the promotion of our destination and help our community. After all, our interviewee and long-time guest, Zdravko Marić, this year as part of the corporate social responsibility project - Youth Games, wonderfully brings together tens of thousands of children to raise awareness of the need to include children in sports activities. One rather distinguished enthusiast and dear friend of the hotel is Professor Ivan Dropuljić who will hold the 10th Annual Zagreb International Art Festival of Wine and Culinary, where else than at the Esplanade Hotel. This deliciously intriguing wine event, for numerous years has brought together a multitude of producers of wine and fine cuisine, many of the same attendees, but equally renowned journalists who leave Zagreb with radiant smiles, ready to present the world and spread the word of our beautiful destination. In addition, many athletes, entrepreneurs and artists have deservedly become unique ambassadors of our small nation and one such person is the talented young Zagreb playwright, Tena Štivičić, who recently received a prestigious award in New York for her outstanding work. All this firmly puts Zagreb and Croatia on the map as an attractive tourist destination, as do the numerous vibrant festivals that year after year enhance what we have to offer. Therefore, we devote this issue to what makes Zagreb so appealing – the summer festivals of Ljeto na Štrosu, Cest is d’Best, InMusic Festival and the Zagreb Time Machine. We sincerely look forward to the summer months in Zagreb with fabulous experiences and events you simply wouldn’t want to miss. And for those who’ll be making their way along the Adriatic waters in the sunshine, we strongly suggest a worthwhile visit to the paradise garden of the Meneghello family. Enjoy the reading.

Zagreb is proud of its many dignified historical icons, however, the story of the Esplanade Hotel is rather special. Over the nine decades, the most prestigious and most beautiful hotel in Zagreb has been witness to a host of events, fate, love and revolutions, and with modesty, back then, and equally today has received praise by its distinguished guests. Also known as the temple of comfort and cuisine, in its 90th year it has successfully kept right up to date with the present, yet at the same time has always fostered the harmony of tradition and the past.
Priča počinje s Orient Expressom
The story begins with the Orient Express
U tom razdoblju, s porastom broja stanovnika raste i turistički promet, a turizam postaje sve organiziranija društvena djelatnost.
It all started way back in 1862 with the arrival of the railway in Zagreb, which was crucial to its further development and the construction of the branch of the southern railway line (Vienna-Trieste). And so Zagreb gained a modern connection to other European cities and the first railway station was built - the socalled South Station (today’s Western railway station). During this period, the increase in population was parallel to a growing tourist trade, and equally tourism was becoming a more organized social activity. Then on 22 April 1925, the Zagreb scene was introduced to a magnificent building representing the most important event in the history of Zagreb’s hospitality industry – the opening of the Esplanade Hotel. One of the reasons to influence the decision to construct a luxury hotel within the station area of the city, was the famous Orient Express train, that stopped in Zagreb en route between Paris and Istanbul since 1883. Precisely because of a wealthier clientele who could afford such a travel experience, the concept swayed towards opening a hotel in Zagreb of adequate quality. In 1917 an international tender was announced which attracted numerous excellent architects of the time, including the famous Swiss, Alfred Loos, who actually did not win the tender. Success came to German, Otto Rehnig, whose original plans were reworked by Dionis Sunko who today is considered the architect of this masterpiece of architecture of the “Belle Epoque”. The name “Esplanade”, which in its original form means “an open plain”, was given to the hotel. The construction of the hotel was completed in just 26 months. Thus, from 1925, visitors were treated to a hotel of “200 rooms with running hot and cold water, with a few special suites, a telephone in each room, lounges, restaurants, a bank, etc.”.

U hotelu su, između ostalih, smještaj potražili Charles Lindbergh, Josephine Baker, Aleksandar Aljehin, španjolski kralj Alfons XIII., engleska kraljica Elizabeta II., Richard Nixon, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brežnjev, Gamal Abdel Naser, Henry Kissinger, Maria Callas, Arthur Rubenstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Louis Armstrong, Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, Anthony Queen i mnogi drugi | The impressive list of celebrities who have stayed at the “Esplanade” features: Charles Lindbergh, Josephine Baker, Alexander Aljehin, Spanish King Alfonso XIII, Queen Elizabeth II, Richard Nixon, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Henry Kissinger, Maria Callas, Arthur Rubenstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Louis Armstrong, Orson Wells, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, Anthony Queen and many others
Središte društvenog života Zagreba
The centre of the Zagreb social scene
A few days after its inauguration, the hotel opened its doors to the first guests among whom was Mr. Glück, (German for happiness), which was an indication of a bright future ahead.
Ovdje su, između ostalih, smještaj potražili Charles Lindbergh, Josephine Baker, Aleksandar Aljehin, španjolski kralj Alfons XIII., engleska kraljica Elizabeta II., Richard Nixon, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brežnjev, Gamal Abdel Naser, Henry Kissinger, Maria Callas, Arthur Rubenstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Louis Armstrong, Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, Anthony Queen i mnogi drugi.
Among the 200 distinguished guests at the opening ceremony of the hotel was the Mayor of Zagreb, Mr. Heinzel, consuls, bankers, journalists, as well as a host of many others who enjoyed the new Zagreb hotel with a classic touch. The newspapers wrote: “The hotel has a wonderful location, it is luxurious, sophisticated, extremely comfortable and equipped with the latest accomplishments of modern technology. It will become one of the most famous international hotels. There are private rooms for smokers, meetings and music to satisfy every need of the business traveler. The intimate atmosphere of some of these rooms is the perfect place for dinner for two. The great ballroom decorated with ionic columns and sculptures is very impressive and equally the restaurant and bistro have a superb layout. “
Interestingly, the Esplanade hotel did not only hold the function of luxury accommodation for wealthy tourists, but also played a significant role in the social lives of the wealthier citizens of Zagreb (elite dances, casino, first “Miss” pageant, etc.). The impressive list of celebrities who have stayed at the “Esplanade” features: Charles Lindbergh, Josephine Baker, Alexander Aljehin, Spanish King Alfonso XIII, Queen Elizabeth II, Richard Nixon, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Henry Kissinger, Maria Callas, Arthur Rubenstein, Alfred Hitchcock, Louis Armstrong, Orson Wells, Laurence Olivier, Woody Allen, Anthony Queen and many others. The Esplanade also became a venue of love affairs within the stories of certain contemporary writers. It was said the hotel “attracted dissatisfied wives and their lovers.” One of the most intriguing love affairs during the roaring 20s was published in the local newspapers. During one of the “dance evenings”, a well-known local ladies’ man seduced a young woman leading to an infatuation lasting several months. They mainly used luxury hotel rooms as their meeting place, until the man found a new love. Following a public quarrel, the lady “fainted” and so this became the perfect reason for a passionate scandal.

The first striptease took place at the farewell party of an Italian count. The hotel was literally shaking, and the manager at the time, Mr. Matignon, experienced one of the most difficult nights of his life. Among the other highlighted events that took place at the Esplanade was the Miss Yugoslavia event in 1926 organized by “Fanamenta”, a Berlin production company. Miss Yugoslavia, and later Miss Europe, was a certain Miss Štefica Vidačić, the owner of a petite cafe in Jurišićeva Street.
he hotel has also drawn attention to itself because of several incidents when police had to intervene. A group of Italians opened a Golf Club for foreigners using it as a cover for a casino. The police would constantly turn a blind eye, but when prostitution was mentioned, the casino closed down. This most modern hotel in Central Europe has certainly attracted its fair share of celebrities. The impact of the Esplanade had back then upon the social life of city is best evidenced by recent common opinion that “once you step inside, the experience is worth mentioning to your grandchildren”. Generation after generation have spoken in awe of the elegant and magical mansion hotel with reverence.
Od uglednih gostiju do Gestapa
From distinguished guests to the Gestapo
Guests have included Asta Nielsen, a famous star of silent films and star of stage and screen, actress Gitta Alpar, who was so popular in Zagreb that her fans besieged the railway station as well as the Esplanade for hours. Equally, an eager crowd waited the arrival of the Black Venus, queen of Parisian cabaret, singer and dancer Josephine Baker. As she arrived, she had to wade through the adorning masses of fans that greeted her at the hotel entrance. Several puritan-oriented Zagreb ladies requested the cancellation of her show, but despite the objections, the citizens of Zagreb enjoyed her half-naked sensual show. The European king of shoes, Bata, also stayed at the hotel, as well as the greatest screen lover of the era, Vladimir Gajdarov. The signature of Lady Ashby, Chairwoman of the International Association for the women’s rights is also featured in the hotel’s guest book. The famous Charles Lindbergh, the man who first flew over the Atlantic, was also one of the guests, and the French writer Jules Romains who, with his young wife, spent several days at the hotel.

Simbol vrhunske usluge sve do danas
During 1941 and the first days of foreign occupation, the hotel was completely empty: the last guests disappeared without trace, and it came the new guests: German officers. The Esplanade was suddenly transformed into the headquarters of the Gestapo and Wehrmacht. Strangely enough, at the numerous parties at the hotel, organized by the Germans, the most secretive information was able to be obtained. During the 60s, the most famous guests of the hotel were Silvana Pampanini, Yul Brunner, Jack Palance, Rosana Podesta, Belinda Lee, Moira Orfei, and the unpredictable Orson Welles, who was famous for dropping banknotes and never bending down to pick them up however large they were. Many diplomats and statesmen have passed through the doors of the Esplanade. What could the hotel offer them? Did the service meet their expectations? During Nikita Khrushchev’s visit, none other than a duck in red cabbage could be found on the menu. Leonid Brezhnev and his delegation were served with saddle of venison a ’la wild with crabs. Prince Sihanouk was so thrilled with the dinner prepared by the chefs of the Esplanade, he gave the Chef, Martin Maček gold dessert cutlery to show his appreciation. British Queen Elizabeth II expressed particular admiration towards the talent in hotel kitchen by giving the Chef a gold coin for expertly prepared fish dishes - Dalmatian style. 1964 was a year of significant importance for the Esplanade. It was at this time the hotel joined the InterContinental Hotel, founded by PAN AM to provide accommodation to its passengers in the best hotels in the world, offering superior service and comfort. From this point onwards the golden years of the Esplanade begin: joining the InterContinental Corporation and becoming part of the high society among the best hotels in the world.
The symbol of superior service to this day
In 1967, the Esplanade has received the award of the City of Zagreb for exceptional business results. The following year in 1968, the hotel was nominated among the best of 62 Inter-Continental hotels in Europe and the Middle East and in 1975 the hotel received acknowledgement by President Tito with the Order of Labour with a golden wreath. The years that consequently followed were unfortunately marked by a struggle for quality. The very first bistro opened in 1986 on the site of the snack bar. Until then, nobody had ever witnessed a restaurant featuring a glass roof. For the first time waitresses wore silk uniforms and each lady received a rose as they entered the Bistro. Ivica Max Krizmanic
| Zagreb born Ivica Krizmanić, commonly known as Max, has been connected with the hotel both in business and his private life, ever since his very first encounter with the Esplanade at the early age of three years old when his father, who dedicated his entire career at the front desk of this hotel, brought him into the workplace. For three and a half years, Ivica Max Krizmanić has been the General Manager of the hotel, which is the pride of the capital but equally represents a certain superior hospitality.

Thrilled by what he saw and experienced as a three-year-old, after almost twenty years later, he happily took up a student job working as a doorman – a role he soon fell in love with. Totally unplanned, his career in the hotel industry happened by accident, as his dedication to knowledge and hard work continued to pay off. Step by step, Ivica managed to achieve a fabulous childhood dream. Following 20 years of service at the hotel, Ivica was to become the General Manager of this Zagreb icon of the hotel industry, currently holding this position for nearly three and a half years. Always open to a conversation and in a friendly mood, he modestly considers himself as only one small piece in the clockwork keeping the engine running with a great love.

As the Esplanade, the most famous hotel in Zagreb, marks its 90th year, we asked Ivica to share what it feels like from his perspective.
This hotel truly radiates a special kind of energy. I’m not saying this just because I work here, but because it’s actually true. Many of us believed that working at the Esplanade would become a stepping stone in our careers, but strangely after a very short time this hotel positively grows on you. With such a historical significance the Esplanade Hotel has on the City of Zagreb and the region, it’s difficult to resist. In addition to being an architectural gem of beauty and elegance, the building itself has a special charm and wonderful spirit which everyone seems to fall in love with at first sight. When we begin to reflect upon the many guests who have walked these corridors, stayed in the rooms, the many important events that have unfolded just in this area, this deserves great respect, treating the hotel as an almost living being in need of a family environment, love and care. This, in turn enables us to equally provide all those looking for a friendly and warm service, a unique special experience, which goes far beyond just a luxurious space and will remain forever in their memories. This is what we all strive for. There are lots of philosophical ideas and mathematical formulas on how to properly manage a luxury hotel, but what it actually all boils down to is the key word of “passion”. To love a hotel and provide our guests with emotional experiences is simply what many people need. That’s how I lead - with my heart. I experience this hotel as my own and everything that happens within it. When I’m not around, the hotel is always with me 24 hours-a-day, seven daysa-week. This is far from an ordinary hotel. 90 years is a wonderful number to hear, especially when you know that the hotel operates like clockwork and supporting it is a magnificent team that justly deserves to be part of its distinctive and rich history.
hotelu sam 23 godine, zaista zvuči dugo, no prošlo je začas. Što se promijenilo? Mnogo toga.
This hotel has been your workplace for many years. What would you say has changed the most in these 90 years and what has the hotel managed to retain during all this time? I’ve been with the hotel for 23 years, which sounds a lot, but in fact the time has just flown by. So, what has changed? Many things. The hotel went under a complete renovation, shining in all its new splendour, yet still retained its true character and charm. Changes were made in the way of doing business, but equally guests have changed, as many young people have been introduced to Zagreb which makes me particularly happy.

Hotel je oduvijek bio prepoznatljiv. Nastojimo slijediti tradiciju pružanja vrhunske usluge prateći trendove u hotelijerstvu i gastronomiji, potrebe modernih gostiju i razvoj novih tehnologija u svijetu kako bi hotel održao vodeću poziciju u regiji.
Naime, prilagodbom cijena tržištu, kontinuiranim pružanjem vrhunske usluge i održavanjem visoke razine kvalitete dosta smo povećali popunjenost hotela, ali i njegovu profitabilnost.
The hotel has always been distinctive. We aim to follow the tradition of providing top-quality service, following the latest trends within the hotel industry and gastronomy, together with the changing needs of modern guests and the development of new global technologies, in order to maintain a leading position in the region. We strive to be different from all other hotels, and as we are independent, we’re very flexible and can quickly and easily adapt to situations and realize new ideas and projects.
n recent years we’ve invested a lot into new technology in order to raise the quality for the guests staying at the hotel. For example we replaced old aerials with wireless internet antenna of the latest generation to enable all hotel guests, in all rooms and on the terraces to access free superfast wireless internet - which is one of the most important aspects of today’s modern guest. We switched our existing TVs for attractive new flat screens with a built-in entertainment system. We introduced the PressReader hot zone application that guests can download free of charge on their smart devices to download and browse more than 2,500 global newspapers and magazines. We’ve created digital menus easily captured on iPad devices, we launched our own app, and we’ll soon launch a new website for easier and simpler access on mobile devices. The needs of today’s guests differ from those of a few years ago, and it’s really important to recognize how to make guests feel comfortable and experience the full service and luxury you would expect from a hotel of this calibre. I often say that we differentiate ourselves in our approach. We don’t like to be slaves to the strict standards laid down in the hotel industry. We like to be different and original, and we appreciate individuality and uniqueness which our guests notice.
What are you most proud of when it comes to the Esplanade Hotel? I’m extremely proud of the business results over the last three years since the hotel has been operating independently. Our adaptation of the market price, the continuous provision of top quality services and maintaining a high level of quality means we have significantly increased the occupancy rate, but also the profitability of the hotel. We have achieved results that many said were impossible to achieve in this market. Numerous international prizes and prestigious awards are proof that the hotel is doing well and moving in the right direction. But the strongest reward is at the end of a working day, reading the reviews of positive comments from delighted guests promising to one day return - there’s no better feeling. I’m really pleased with positive atmosphere in my team. Without them the Esplanade would not be what it is today. They are the spirit of this hotel and I’m grateful to them as they support my ideas on a daily basis and lend a part of themselves to the guests.

I feel proud of the reputation the Esplanade has in Croatia and abroad, especially among diplomatic circles and royalty, but also our contribution to Croatian tourism, in terms of trained staff, innovative ideas and the active promotion of the entire destination within the international market of luxury services. In addition, I am proud of the role the Esplanade has in society, because apart from financial results, it’s essential we provide the human spirit to our fellow citizens. We strive every day to lend our support to wherever possible, strengthening our presence in culture, sports, ecology, charity campaigns and social events. I believe that everyone can contribute to the community according to the capabilities they hold. I’m proud of the fact that the Esplanade has maintained its reputation in this market, but also has become familiar in certain new regions and other parts of the world.
nade. To lead this hotel forward is an extremely responsible task. Every day I meet a number of challenges and high expectations, but it’s all a lot of fun and at the end of the day a successful event, a perfect dinner, a selfless gesture helping guests or colleagues is all extremely fulfilling and I simply can’t deny - this is the best job in the world.
We know that the Esplanade is certainly the best hotel in Zagreb, but what is its position within Croatia and the European map? The Esplanade Hotel was and still is the heart of Zagreb’s social scene, a favourite gathering place for many generations of Zagreb citizens who with their families and friends come to the restaurant, celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and weddings, or simply walk through the doors of the hotel as an escape from everyday life. I can safely say that the Esplanade Hotel has a great significance for the City of Zagreb and Croatia, as it has always been the first choice of statesmen, royalty and celebrities from the world of showbiz, which shouldn’t be taken lightly as accommodation sometimes accounts for more than 50% of the full destination experience. Every delighted guest who leaves our hotel is in some way a promoter of Zagreb and Croatia. If the stay is more than just accommodation, guests then experience the city and people through the hotel staff, who are in fact ambassadors for the destination. We create a sense of happiness, pleasure and relaxation, transferring positive energy through the incredible love and pride we feel towards this hotel. We craft wonderful memories to inspire guests to return to Zagreb, conveying a beautiful image of the city to the world.
his prestigious Zagreb Dame was and will remain the pride of Zagreb and represents superior hospitality. I believe that in the coming years and decades, it will continue to seize its famous splendour and provide superior service to new generations alongside all modern business trends.

For Tenu Štivičić, this past year has been extremely successful. In early March, the Zagreb-born playwright who resides in London, received the international Susan Smith Blackburn Prize directly from the hands of the famous British actress Rebecca Hall, in New York. Tena was nominated the oldest and most prestigious prize awarded to English-speaking playwrights, by the National Theatre in London which produced her drama called “three winters” in the winter of 2014. To add further intrigue, this is a family drama that covers three generations of a Zagreb family, spanning seventy years of our history. The direction of this interesting drama was taken on board by the famous British director Howard Davies, who is in some way responsible for bringing the concept to the National Theatre. Although the story is poignantly very specific to our region, the play has received rave reviews, and tickets were almost sold out for two and a half months during its time within the repertoire of the National Theatre.

ristupila sam Howardu Daviesu s dramom u jednoj ranoj verziji jer njegove režije pratim i volim otkad sam došla u London.

This winter, your family drama “three winters” was featured at the National Theatre in London, directed by the famous British director Howard Davies. In fact, he was in some way responsible for helping the drama become part of the repertoire of the National Theatre. How did you manage to start a collaboration with Davies? What most intrigued him when he read your drama? I approached Howard Davies with one of the first draft versions of the drama as I’ve always been a fan of his and followed his directing ever since I first came to London. He is a very precise director, who likes contemporary drama and historical topics and someone who often directs Russian pieces, intrigued by different mentalities of their own. I thought that all of these points would encourage a strong reaction with great interest. Equally, this is a great family saga, set in a home in Croatia across seventy years, and mainly expresses the perspective of female characters. Family dramas always pose an interesting challenge for writers and directors due to the complexity, the many deep relationships, the host of subtexts and bundles of emotion, wrapped up with a lot of humour and wide spectrum from comedy to tragedy. When such a nucleus is placed in seventy years of Croatian history, this means that almost every generation needs to cope with a radically different system of political values and the consequences or the intuition of a new war. Such a turbulent environment for many other countries is completely unknown, so this is of particular intrigue.
This is not your first London premiere but it’s certainly “the most important”. What do you think were the elements over these last 13 years to achieve this level of professional success? What has been critical to your success in London? To answer that question, I’d have to have some kind of distance from my own life, and that’s impossible. It’s difficult to objectively say which elements, decisions and actions would have in some way shaped this success. As a child, I somehow always knew I’d live somewhere other than Zagreb. I realized that choosing London meant changing sides, often an unfavourable or unsentimental and very competitive environment.
his means taking on a very disciplined attitude towards work which you often need to conform to in other aspects of life. At the same time, I don’t write with a strategy in mind – I always write in a creative sense, rather than the demands of the market. All this together isn’t a winning formula, but rather an irregular destined path with a lot of hard challenges, but also worth rising to.
Imaju li stranci u Londonu u današnje vrijeme iste startne pozicije kao Britanci?
Do foreigners in London today hold the same starting position as the British?
Usprkos tome, ja trenutačno uživam u poziciji koju sam osvojila i sretna sam da o svim ovim temama mogu govoriti i kreativno.
Today, across the globe people are primarily divided into rich and poor. In a poor spectrum, foreigners, or immigrants undergo the worst and this amounts to rage, helplessness and frustration whilst living in poverty. It’s a long-term organized campaign that moves attention away from the truth and I think it will sooner or later lead to a revolution. The truth is the gap between wealth and poverty which is noticeably increasing with the insatiably, exceedingly greedy capitalists to blame. If there was redistribution of even small amounts of wealth, coupled with fair taxation, this would lead to much greater prosperity. This is what stands in the way of a better life. It’s certainly not the Romanian cleaners, Polish builders nor Kurdish taxi drivers. So starting positions are certainly not the same. However, in the world of film and theatre it’s still slightly more civilized and more comfortable, but in the business world, I feel there are another set of rules. In my own environment, to write in a language that isn’t my mother tongue, of course, that puts me in a different position compared to native English speaking playwrights and screenwriters but this is really specific and rare. Nevertheless, I now enjoy the position that I’ve gained and I’m happy that I can speak creatively on all these issues.

Kako je izgledala sama dodjela nagrada u New Yorku?
I jedna i druga mogućnost me zbog različitih razloga vrlo vesele.
Otkad živim u Londonu, temu imigracije/ emigracije/migracije osjećam posebno intenzivno i bolno. To je sigurno ključna tema suvremenog društva. Invisible je u svojoj srži ljubavni triler. Spaja likove s dvije suprotne strane društvenog spektra.

Did you ever expect to be nomination for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize?
wasn’t even thinking about the nomination because at the time I was busy at the beginning of rehearsals. It was a real honour to be nominated by the National Theatre for this award which covers the whole English-speaking world with the countless dramas written every year, so I really didn’t expect to gain the prize. This award really means a lot to me, especially since it was established and still continues to raise the visibility of women writers in a discipline that has historically been dominated by men. Interestingly, some of my favourite playwrights such as Caryl Churchill have won this award in the past.
Tell us about the atmosphere at the awards ceremony in New York The ceremony took place at the Playwrights Horizons theatre, within a very casual, relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Among others, a speech was given by the great American writer Marsha Norman, and my particular award was given to me by the fantastic British actress Rebecca Hall.
Is your drama “three winters” planned to be shown in Zagreb or even New York? Yes, I’m in talks with the National Theatre in Zagreb, and for New York it’s still too early to say, but certainly there’s an interest. Both possibilities, for various reasons make me feel good. New York is of course enticing and challenging in every sense, and equally as this piece is set in Zagreb, deriving from the my own history and the spirit of this city, I very much look forward to performances on the Zagreb stage in my native language.
You are currently working on the script for a film based on your play Invisible which will be directed by Oscarwinner Danis Tanović. What exactly is in this piece, and why, out of all your dramas, this one is to be made into a film? This is in fact not my first drama I’ve adapted for film, but as the world of independent film goes, many projects due to countless reasons don’t always come to light. Structurally, the drama Invisible is something suited well to the film genre, but I think the key thing is the story and the theme. Since I’ve lived in London the subject of migration has been an issue I have particularly intense and painful feelings towards. It’s certainly a key issue in contemporary society. Invisible, at its core is a romantic thriller connecting the characters with two opposite sides of the social spectrum. Newcomers, immigrants, and the so-called indige-

The story is about how a system in which we live simultaneously affects both sides of the population, and one that has been forced into economic or political migration trying to build a better life somewhere else, and the others who live nominally the better western life. This is the tale of what happens when they meet. In fact, I think it’s very important to be aware of the fact that immigration, which is such an intense hot topic in all current elections in the West - that same West is responsible.
Where will filming take place and where will you find the cast?
e are currently in talks with actors and I still, at this stage can’t name any names. Naturally, we’re looking in the UK, from a country that is now called ‘regions’, and also from other countries. Filming is scheduled in London.
Koliko to bude vremenski i koncentracijski moguće, htjela bih napisati film povijesne tematike, seriju i novu dramu.
You are in talks regarding a few new projects. Can you tell us more about these?
Depending on time and possibilities, I would next like to write a film script based on historical themes, a series and a new drama. I don’t know exactly in what order, but this is the general plan.
You have lived in London for 13 years. Often, we hear about the negative aspects of the city. I’m interested to know all the reasons why you love to live in London? ondon je raznovrstan, u njemu se stalno nešto događa, nemoguće je pratiti ma i trećinu zanimljivih događanja.
London is very diverse, and there’s constantly something happening here. It’s impossible to follow even a third of all these interesting events. London is a place which constantly welcomes interesting people - some remain, some just pass through, but it’s certainly one of those cultural intersections of the world. In London, people live diverse lives, there isn’t uniformity which characterizes small communities. It’s possible to live your life in your own way, largely uncondemned by one’s surroundings. Above all, as a matter of personal taste, I truly find this a beautiful city.
Zbog čega volite dolaziti u hotel Esplanade?
Why do you like coming to the Esplanade? Do you have any memories that connect you with this hotel?
Kad god kažem da idem u Esplanadu, moj tata kaže: „Odličan izbor, stilom, tradicijom i kvalitetom“. Ha, ha. Pa jest, ima nešto u tome. Općenito, volim dobre hotele, mislim da bih u jednom takvom mogla i živjeti. Kao Nikola Tesla, ha, ha. Volim mir, nenametljivu atmosferu i uslugu, volim diskreciju, cijenjenje privatnosti, dobru hranu i piće.
Whenever I say I’m going to the Esplanade, my father says: A great choice, style, tradition and quality. Haha. Well, yes, he’s spot on! I’m a great fan of good hotels and I think I could actually live in such a hotel as this. Just like Nikola Tesla - haha. I love the peace, unobtrusive atmosphere and service, appreciate the discretion, respect for privacy, and great food and drink.

I imagine you occasionally miss Zagreb? What do you miss the most? Of course. Zagreb is a well-balanced city which reflects, in some respects the pleasant lifestyle. It’s easy to meet up with friends and to visit a string of places on a night out for example, or to change plans and gather people from one place to another. These are things that are difficult to achieve in a large city like London. Zagreb is a city that you can walk across with ease and It’s also a very comfortable place to live. Also, when you don’t live in your hometown, then you often have the privilege of having your friends and acquaintances look forward to welcoming you back when you return. It’s always a little celebration and we all make an effort to spend some quality time together. On the other hand, the growing conformity of this city annoys me. The fact that during the Catholic holidays in a still nominally secular state, there isn’t a sole in sight for three days except for the time when everyone hectically hits the markets to stock up for the Easter dinner table. That’s an incredibly provincial characteristic for a capital of a central European country, as we like to call ourselves. This isn’t Zagreb as I remember before I left. Zagreb is a beautiful, well-positioned and large enough city with a population of sufficiently intelligent and educated people to rise against these regressive pseudo traditional ways.

TRAG U POVIJESTI
DOM PÉRIGNONA Historical traces of Dom Pérignon
When Father Pierre Pérignon took over the wine cellar at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Pierre d’Hautvillers in 1668 his intentions were publicly known: to craft the best wine in the world. His ambition had become a reality even to this day. With its taste, Dom Perignon delicately balances the line between a rich density and light transparency. Its accuracy is extremely tactile, dark as if it were sculpted. The full taste lingers long after drinking and seduces with its elegance and playfulness providing an allegiance of first impressions until it reaches a long-term ending. Thanks to the rich harvest, the last vintage certainly left its mark on the history of Dom Perignon, one of the world’s most prestigious champagnes. Unlike previous years, the growth of grapes were in line with all expectations, without difficulty and the grapes were numerous and large.
lthough the weather conditions were moderate with the exception of a cold August, the vintage was defined by a somewhat dry heat during the weeks prior to harvesting. This vintage of extremely ripe and healthy grapes commenced on 24 September.
Arome badema i kakaa u prahu postupno se razvijaju u aromu bijelog voća uz naznake suhog cvijeća. Klasične tositirane note zaokružuju cjelinu mirisa, potvrđujući potpunu zrelost završnog proizvoda.
The aromas of almonds and cocoa powder gradually evolve into the aroma of white fruit with hints of dried flowers. Classic notes round off the complete fragrance, confirming the full maturity of the final product.

MORRICONE
U ZAGREBU Ennio Morricone in Zagreb
Ennio Morricone, Oscar winner and one of the most prolific and influential composers in modern history, who has written music for more than 500 motion pictures and television series, gloriously held a truly memorable concert in Zagreb. He gained worldwide fame working alongside directors of Italian “spaghetti” westerns such as Sergio Leone, Duccio Tessari and Sergio Corbucci. The City of Zagreb was treated with a repertoire of “50 Years of Music” notably a ‘best of’ selection of his career. In addition to appearances at the Zagreb Arena, Ennio and his full orchestra of over one hundred musicians held a one-of-a-kind historical performance – which was actually a music rehearsal in the magnificent Emerald Ballroom of the Esplanade. He delightfully concluded this is a perfect venue for grand concerts. Apart from enjoying his stay at the Esplanade, Ennio was especially thrilled with the delicacies crafted by Ana Grgić, Chef de cuisine, personally sharing praise for the preparation of Italian treats.

IGRE MLADIH DRUŠTVENO SU ODGOVORAN PROJEKT The Youth Games is a socially responsible project
Even as an occasional visitor to the Esplanade Hotel, it is almost impossible not to know who Zdravko Marić is. He says the hotel is a second home which is not surprising as he spends here more than 100 days a year. When you ask him where he lives, he replies he is constantly travelling between Zagreb, Belgrade and Sarajevo. Everything becomes crystal clear when you discover what he does. A native of Split, this young man did something almost unbelievable. 19 years ago he organized the Youth Sports Games, involving nearly 90,000 children in Croatia alone. Several years ago the games expanded into neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed by Serbia, and bringing on-board Albania and Montenegro was almost a completed deal. In a few years it is highly likely Slovenia will be included and indications to include Russia are positive. Zdravko Marić is one of those people with whom you can communicate with ease, as he is very straightforward and easy to make friends with. He is well-known and has linked world famous celebrities from the world of sport and beyond to his project, raising awareness of the need to include children in sports activities. Only a person with such energy is able to launch a project like the Youth Sports Games. In the hotel bistro Zdravko revealed to us how it all began.

How did you come up with the idea 19 years ago to organize the Youth Sports Games?
As a child with my friends, in my Split neighbourhood, I would play football all day and organize small tournaments. Those playing basketball started to approach us and asked if we would organize tournaments for them. That’s how, 19 years ago I had an idea to organize the Split Youth Olympics which attracted 6,000 children. We simply couldn’t believe it. We thought it was a kind of joke thinking the same children applied many times. However, after five to six years in Split, the Olympics received a cult status, so we started to develop the project further. So, actually the idea came about by accident. Today I’m very proud of what I achieved, especially when I see how much the competition means to the children.
What sport did you love as a boy, other than football?
Nogomet sam jako volio; i danas ga volim gledati.
I really liked football, and I still like to watch it today. Although, today’s football is much more or far less than a sport, depending on how you look at things. I played basketball, as the sport was extremely popular back then.
Unfortunately, nowadays I don’t actively do any sports. Luckily I’m very disciplined when it comes to food and I walk a lot.

Onda smo krenuli otvarati vrata u Srbiji. Krenuli smo s jednom kategorijom, onom do 14 godina (Igre imaju tri kategorije: do 10 godina, do 14 godina i do 18 godina), četiri sporta i 17 gradova.
How did the Games expand to the other countries in the region? Three years ago we had 87,000 children who applied for the competition, so here in Croatia, there was a kind of explosion. We started getting letters from children, parents and even teachers from neighbouring countries who had watched us on television. They suggested selling them a franchise. But since I do a lot of traveling, I decided that we should do this ourselves and a franchise would be sold maybe one day to other countries. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, already the games have been running for five years and have gained a host of awards. There, you can really absorb the spirit of the Games as the children participating come from all three entities. And that’s extremely important. Then we went to start the project in Serbia. First, I negotiated with the then President Boris Tadić, but we were not yet ready. Finally, with Prime Minister Vučić, last year we started the Games in Serbia. We started with one age category of up to 14 years, (the Games have three categories of up to 10, 14, and to 18 years), four sport categories across 17 cities. This year’s plan for Serbia consists of 29 cities, 2 age categories and over 50,000 children.
Which sports are included in the Youth Sports Games?
Moramo, zbog infrastrukture.
asketball, handball, futsal, street basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, dodgeball, tennis, table tennis, chess and badminton. I believe that all events, just like ours, that encourage children to take up sport, are very important for children. We used to spent time on the street, “on the wall”, as people say in Split, and it was important to get children away from the streets and persuade them to participate in sport. Today, the greatest problem is getting kids out of the house and removing them away from television and computer screens. The Games for children are totally free, with no selection and are open to everyone who wants to join in. As our ambassadors, professional athletes come to say hello and spend time with them and continue to support us providing a special experience for the children.
Do you have wide support of the local communities? e must have their support for the infrastructure. Nobody has to invest because of us, as we’re satisfied with the existing infrastructure. We mostly cooperate well with everybody but every now and then there are those who are not willing to cooperate, but it’s really quite rare.
What is the situation with sponsors? It has always been difficult. Our entire country is still leaning towards the public sector, not the private one, which is not good. In the public sector, people still do not understand the essence of sponsorship. It’s not just a problem in sport but also in culture. As far as commercial sponsors, we’ve made a lot of contacts but few have turned into real sponsorship. I think here in Croatia, sponsorship is still reduced to two categories; begging or lobby-

ing. We still don’t understand the difference between sponsorship and donations which is the evidence for what I mentioned earlier about the two categories. The most common response from sponsors that you hear today is the crisis and there are no funds for marketing, yet we know that companies abroad, during the crisis, still invest particularly in marketing. That’s why I always joke and say it would be easier to reach President Obama than to get a sponsor in Croatia.
Which of today’s known athletes have participated in the Games over these last 19 years? Every now and then someone tells me their child once participated in the Games, so it’s perhaps a better question to ask me who hasn’t participated. The other day Prime Minister, Zoran Milanović informed me his son appeared at the Games, and then there are players who now play for Hajduk Split, Dinamo Zagreb and Lokomotiva, not to mention Dario Sarić. There are so many we could go on and on.
You have Ambassadors of the Games. Famous athletes who support you. I always like to say the Games have brought me great friendships. For example, my great friend Predrag Mijatović, who is a global star, and really helps a lot, does whatever it takes to promote us and visits sponsors. The two of us through this collaboration have created a priceless friendship. Then there’s SvenGoran Eriksson who also takes care of us. There‘s Valery Gergiev who’s not connected to sport, but is involved in our project. Luka Modrić is a very important figure to us. He comes to visit us and the children have chosen him as the number one athlete. We also became friends and this friendship means a lot to me. We have three ambassadors in the region: Luka Modrić for Croatia, Nemanja Matić for Serbia and Miralem Pjanić for Bosnia.

Najavili ste Igre u Albaniji.
Osim toga, trebala bi nam ozbiljna infrastruktura, velik budžet i ljudstvo. U Rusiji postoji i problem prometne povezanosti.
Zašto volite dolaziti i boraviti u Esplanadi?
I understand David Beckham was also your ambassador? That’s right. He was our first ambassador and he really did everything that was needed for us. He gave statements for English and Croatian television, and was photographed wearing our t-shirts etc. The Director of the Premier League helped us to reach Beckham. He organized everything. However, due to Beckham’s demanding popularity we really couldn’t ask for more than what we got, and what we did get, for us, was fantastic.
You announced the Games for Albania. What about Montenegro and Slovenia? We’re already positioned within the state budget of Albania and we might even start this year. As for Slovenia, we were still negotiating with the former Prime Minister Pahor, but didn’t succeed, and I think we’ll need another two or three years before Slovenia becomes a reality. Prior to that we would certainly start with Montenegro and Albania. I imagine we’ll begin next year in Montenegro.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?
have no plans. All I know is that I love what I do and my work brings a lot of happiness and friendships. Moreover, the Games is a project that is socially responsible and we make a living from it. We’re not humanitarians, although we do a good thing for society. We’ve even had an invitation to do the Games in Russia but it’s a very demanding task for us. We need to be well prepared for such a project. In addition, you would need serious infrastructure, a large budget and manpower. In Russia there’s a clear problem of transport links. Financially, it would be great for us and we’d probably start a long-term project but we cannot begin unprepared.
The Games are always held at the same time. “School has finished, and the Games begin,” that’s our motto. We start with the preparations in Croatia a little earlier, and the finals are held in August. Given that the finals are held in Split, people ask me how we manage to accommodate all these kids in the middle of the tourist season, and then I tell them we use military bases and student campuses. We always use the railways. The first contracts we sign each season is with Croatian Railways before we even begin with any kind of organization. When I think back to my school excursion, children always found this a wonderful experience travelling by train.
Why do you love to visit and stay at the Esplanade? I live more than 100 days a year in this hotel. This is my home. The Esplanade Hotel is our sponsor and we’re immensely grateful for that and we try to give something back in all possible ways. It’s easy to get used to something that’s good. And so it is with this hotel. I’ve stayed in hotels across the world, but the Esplanade has a soul and a vibrant energy and it’s not hard to feel good here. I feel it from the lowest level to the highest. People are key to the success of this hotel. This is the only hotel in Croatia with a five-star team of staff.

Ivanka & Ivica Tomaškovic
30 GODINA LJUBAVI 30 Years of Love
| As the lyrics of the song go ‘where love begins’, for the Esplanade hotel husband and wife couple Ivanka and Ivica Tomašković, their love story began precisely at the Esplanade no less than 30 years ago. Every employee of the most beautiful Zagreb hotel has his or her own memories associated with the “old lady of Zagreb” but those of Ivanka and Ivica are truly special. Ivanka has delightfully spent three decades working in the housekeeping and laundry department while her husband works in the technical services department. “
“I first stepped into the hotel as a 22-year-old back in 1985, and then my husband two years later. This was where we first met. Together we would leave work in the afternoon and then continued to socialize until the evening. As the shift was 6:00 to 14:00, this gave us both time to have some fun after work - as all young people did in those days. My first job was in the laundry department and I still work here to this very day. I would not have changed it for the world. I should have started work in the kitchen of the hotel but when I arrived there was no room so I joked that the laundry department would be my destiny. I don’t regret it” says Ivanka with a beaming smile on her face as she shares her story while her husband listens carefully.

| Not only the Tomašković couple hold wonderful memories of their workplace but also their children. Their daughters in fact worked here while they were students.
anas sam ponosna mama četvero djece, tri kćeri i jednog sina. No sudbina je htjela drugačije.
Her first days at the hotel remind her of just good memories. Back then when she started work, she recalls the ‘laundry’ hadn’t opened, and the machines were yet to be installed. After some time, a place in the kitchen became available but because of the friendships she had made and the work that she loved, she made up her mind to remain within the laundry department. Although she needed to wake up in the early hours around five, this had never become a burden. Ivanka was born in Sanski Most in Bosnia and Herzegovina, attended secondary school in Zagreb and it was her work and love that destined to keep her in the metropolis. However, not only the Tomašković couple hold wonderful memories of their workplace but also their children. “Today, I’m a proud mother of four children, three daughters and a son. Our daughters in fact worked here while they were students. From an early age, you could find them running along the corridors of the hotel when they would visit me after finishing kindergarten, which was nearby the hotel, until my or my husband’s shift ended”, Ivanka explains. She adds how in 1986 there were organized social gatherings of young workers of the Esplanade Hotel and the Lav Hotel Split which stand out in her memory. As for her husband Ivica, what are his best memories since arriving from the Končar Zagreb company to the Esplanade Hotel in 1987? “As a young man, I worked as an electrician installing lifts. My first job at Končar required me to travel every month so I started to become a little tired the travelling and fieldwork. One day, my neighbour who worked at the Esplanade was talking me and following a long conversation she kindly recommended me to one of her colleagues at the hotel. When I first arrived I was slightly anxious as the laundry had just installed their new machines that I had never even seen, let alone knew how to fix”, laughs Ivica. But his anxiety was made easier to deal with due to Ivanka as she would often defend him in front of colleagues who made fun of Ivica. Ivica admits this was the starting point to the way to his heart. “To add spice to the story, when I started working at the hotel, one of my colleagues immediately passed on a poignant warning about Ivanka: ‘You can fall in love with whoever you wish, just don’t touch her’, but fate had other plans. Many at the hotel were not aware that Ivanka and I were together. Some were surprised to hear we brought our little girls to the hotel, and many did not know we were married. Business is business and we have never spent too much time together or talked too much in the workplace”, say the Tomašković couple.

The Néo-Elsa is the child of a star. A legendary sac par excellence, the ultimate icon of a line that has become an event in itself. For Spring 2015, the Lancel bucket format has slimmed down and taken on new textures. Pared down and softer, the bag is opening up to new horizons. Imagined for the first time in 1927 by Albert, the son of the House’s founders Angèle and Albert Lancel, the bucket bag was an immediate success. In the mid-80s the bag was renamed Elsa and became the emblem of a generation. The Elsa’s joyous, urban spirit was inspired by the mood of the times. Simple and symbolic, the bucket bag has a knack for reinventing itself in every era. The Néo-Elsa is its most contemporary embodiment.
Reintrepetacijom jednostavnog i strukturiranog volumena, Nèo Elsa zadražava bit arhitekture vrećaste torbe. Sve je u materijalima I detaljima. Tu Lancelova izvrsnost i znanje stupaju na scenu: izborom različitih vrsta kože mijenja se čar torbe. Inspirirana večernjim torbama tridesetih godina, teksturirana kao “kornjačin oklop”, koža daje gipkost i dašak luksuza Nèo Elsi. Odrezani, crno obojeni rubovi obavijaju siluetu čineći ju čišćom, uvijenijom i finijom.
The reinterpretation of a simple and highly structured volume, the Néo-Elsa retains the essence of bucket bag architecture. Everything is in the materials and the details. That’s where Lancel excellence and savoir-faire enter the scene: the choice of the various leathers is what modifies the allure of the bag. Inspired by 1930s evening bags, the grained “tortoise-shell” leather imparts suppleness and a luxurious touch to the Néo-Elsa. Cut, black-dyed edges complete a silhouette intended to be cleaner, crisper and more high-design. Just like the dynamic lines created by the play of vertical bands, the crisscross stitching invokes the heritage of the House’s historic models. The refined, intimate details dear to Lancel have undergone a renewal: a minimalist identification tag on the outside and red grosgrain in the interior of the bag. A new style code with an energetic contrast. The sense of detail and finishing so characteristic of the House also serve functionality. The Néo-Elsa comes in two sizes. One format is as spacious as a tote and the other smaller format is as easy to carry during the day as it is in the evening. As adjustable straps enable the Neo-Elsa to be worn over the shoulder, the bag is perfect for urban usage. In the interior, three patch pockets, one of which has a zipper, make for comfort and convenience. The Néo-Elsa sports the House color, Lancel red, and also comes in understated hues (black, khaki and albatross) as well as in sunny yellow. A soft version in nubuck is also offered in both sizes and comes in light gray. A supple leather that gives the Néo-Elsa a folksy 70s look.
The Néo-Elsa is the contemporary version of an ultra-desirable bag. Urban and luxurious, both classic and versatile, this bag was indeed created in the image of today’s women. The House of Lancel was founded in 1876 by Angèle Lancel, one of the truly visionary, emblematic women of Belle Époque Paris. Since then the House, which will celebrate its 140th anniversary in 2016, has maintained an image of French elegance and savoir-faire throughout the world, marking every era with its iconic creations while ceaselessly renewing itself. NAŠA NAJLJEPŠA
USPOMENA Our most treasured memory
| In life, there are certain plans for important days that we simply want to be perfect, becoming the jewel of our memories. Imagining an unforgettable wedding, Ana and Željko Mačešić did not need to dwell on where they would organize their wedding reception. From the beginning, the Esplanade Hotel was their first choice, but they were not the only ones who shared the same dream.

“

“We decided upon the Esplanade as it’s the most special and equally the most beautiful hotel in Zagreb. A hotel that has a soul, history, elegance and glamour which reflects exactly how we imagined our wedding to be. When we first set eyes on the Emerald Ballroom we were knocked off our feet. We knew instantly, this was the place to celebrate our special day. One additional factor which swayed our decision was my mother-in-law’s wish to celebrate at the Esplanade Hotel in the Emerald Ballroom as well as my grandparents who romantically spent their honeymoon at the Esplanade, explains the 26-year-old economist. The wedding plans ran smoothly to perfection, and all on time. They simply said to us, just wait for the big day and enjoy it”

| In terms of decorating the Emerald Ballroom, we opted for simplicity and elegance. Htjela sam dvije vjenčanice, i odabrala sam ih u petnaest minuta.

“We didn’t have to worry about anything at all. The hotel took care of everything, making the whole process stressfree, something many newlyweds and brides only dream of. We were able to make all the elements of the day a reality, even exceeding our expectations. My fantasy of a fairy-tale wedding came true because everything panned out exactly as if it were a fairy-tale. In terms of decorating the Emerald Ballroom, we opted for simplicity and elegance. Each table had candlesticks, high transparent vases with hydrangea surrounded by candles. When it comes to wedding dresses Ana admits that she was not the typical bride who visits endless wedding salons until she eventually finds the perfect choice among the sea of dresses. In Ana’s case it was completely the opposite”. “I knew exactly what I wanted. I had two wedding dresses and I chose them in just fifteen minutes. The first wedding dress I wore until midnight and then I changed into another short white dress. Both dresses were of the Pronovias brand. Ana and Željko highlight the first dance as the most beautiful moment of the evening, enjoying their favourite song, ‘in front of your door’ by Oliver Dragojević”. “At that moment, everything stood still, as if we were in a movie scene, completely alone. Simply us and the song. If I had to do it all over again, I’d do exactly the same”, Ana proudly admits. Something they both really loved in this whole story were the calls from guests, the day after the wedding, who sincerely wanted to thank them for such a beautiful experience and great fun. The wedding continued until five in the morning when they managed to persuade the most eager of dancers to leave the dancefloor. “The atmosphere was excellent. Before we knew it, it was already four in the morning. Our legs were still aching from so much dancing a week later”, the happy couple laughed. In addition to great music and the perfectly made atmosphere, Ana and Željko praise the finest continental delicacies and wedding cake which was a real chocolate fairy-tale.

“We opted for a classic continental wedding menu from the Esplanade as all the guests were from Zagreb and it seemed the best option – and this is exactly what it was. We’ve been to a number of weddings where the food wasn’t up to standard but I can honestly say the Esplanade had the best food we’ve ever eaten. Days later, people called us to say it was simply perfect”, recalls Ana. It was the wedding of our dreams say the happy couple.
„Cijelo to iskustvo i cijeli taj dan jedna je prekrasna uspomena, koju ćemo pamtiti do kraja života“, zaključuju Ana i Željko.
“The whole experience throughout the day is a wonderful keepsake that we’ll forever treasure for the rest of lives”, conclude Ana and Željko.

Festival season in Zagreb Sa sve toplijim vremenom raste i broj kulturnih i glazbenih manifestacija u Zagrebu. | As the warmer temperatures start to rise, so too are the growing number of cultural and musical events in Zagreb. Traditional festivals take place in the centre of the city and over longer periods of time so it is almost an impossible task not take notice and feel the energy. Author K R I S T I N A I VA N D I Ć

Summer on Stross This popular traditional event takes place on the romantic Strossmayer promenade between 25 May - 2 September, known as Ljeto na Štrosu. Late spring to the start of summer guarantees some of the most romantic walks in the Upper Town, and during the summer months it transforms into a venue for art installations and nostalgic live music from the last century. Embedded within this somewhat nostalgic atmosphere is and open-air cinema, numerous canvases and a wide selection of quality Croatian wines. As in previous years, great music genres on the promenade include excellent jazz melodies, evergreen, nostalgic music from the 50s, 60s, 80s, alongside fabulous Latino tunes, original creativity, Roma music and witty alternative music. This year on 30 June, Ljeto na Štrosu will celebrate the “Half New Year” with accompanying fireworks. Fotografije Marko Vrdoljak

Since 2007, the festival takes place over about 3 days, supported by several days of accommodation in the camp, which is also part of the festival’s organization. Although there are occasional changes, INmusic is characterized by three main stages and several smaller ones which showcase performers of mostly rock, world music, electronic music, ska, punk and various other types of music.
The Zagreb Time machine
This program charmingly presents a series of events taking visitors and participants on a journey into the past of “old” Zagreb, an award-winning program declared in 2010 as the best tourist offer of Continental Croatia. The Zagreb Time Machine transforms the Upper Town into the past, alongside promenade concerts and dance evenings at Zrinjevac Park, the changing of the guard of honour of the Cravate Regiment, Tkalčijana with street music and entertainment and street musicians in the Upper Town. All this throughout the summer until autumn. From Kaptol to Dolac market, from Tkalčićeva Street to Ban Jelačić Square, events will take place every weekend in the morning hours with performances by folklore groups to delightful song and dance evoking the customs of the Zagreb area, as tourists are given traditional sweets or homemade fruit. An encounter with the old ladies at the Dolac market will surely provoke interest, as every Friday and Saturday you can meet women dressed in traditional costume offering authentic products. Lovers of dance will enjoy a visit to Zrinjevac Park, where Saturday morning will be a time for promenade concerts and Friday night dance evenings. Vrhunski festival, mnogo odlične glazbe i tradicionalno uzavrelu atmosferu na jarunskom Otoku hrvatske mladeži ove godine garantiraju nam Florence + The Machine, Paolo Nutini, La Roux, Placebo, Franz Ferdinand + Sparks, Eagles of Death Metal, Of Monsters and Men, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club i mnogi drugi.
performers. This year, the organizers have scheduled some 10 bands and 15-odd performance troops from many countries to total more than 500 hours of feel-good content across 7 locations in the city. On the eve of the festival, those interested can participate in various art competitions, and become a part of the “Photography Festival”. The special aspect of this wonderful event is that everyone is warmly welcome and open to all to get involved.
Palmižana
RAJSKI VRT OBITELJI
MENEGHELLO The Garden Paradise of the Meneghello family Jedna od najljepših uvala na Jadranu, popularno zvana Palmižana, predivan je botanički vrt, a u isto vrijeme sjecište umjetnika i ljubitelja umjetnosti. | One of the most stunning bays found anywhere on the Adriatic, popularly called Palmižana, is a radiantly beautiful botanical garden, and equally an intersection for artists and lovers of art. Thanks to the devoted Meneghello family who have been involved in tourism for more than 100 years on the petite Island of St. Clement, Palmižana has become a hotspot where the world’s elite gather. Osim neponovljive prirode i očaravajuće kuhinje, tu se nalaze i sadržaji poput ribolova, rekreacije, plovidbe, dok ljeti postaje kulturna pozornica, oslikana umjetničkim djelima suvremenih hrvatskih umjetnika. No, Palmižana skriva i rane na svom tlu.

Nestled upon St. Clement, one of the delightful Pakleni Islands close to Hvar, is a certain Vinogradišće Bay, more commonly known as Palmižana. Old pine trees warmly surround its sandy coastline, a place where the Meneghello family have been working in tourism since 1906. On their 300-year-old estate of 320 acres, the Meneghello family gathered a spectrum of exotic plants creating an excitingly rare botanical garden. Proudly in 1999, Palmižana was nationally ranked among the 10 most beautiful tourist destinations on the Adriatic. This is also considered as the oldest and most famous of Hvar’s resorts, yet is equally a yacht marina. Palmižana’s cuisine is packed full of superb local fish, crabs and mussels and domestic, fresh home-grown vegetables, which is intriguingly named as the best Mediterranean cuisine according to a selection of prestigious global magazines. It’s no surprise that Palmižana welcomes the rich and famous including John Malkovich, Kevin Spacey, the former President of Germany, and a whole host of other celebrities and public figures. The island is also home to a multitude of plants from all over the world, as every day they grow richer alongside diverse types of cactus, mimosa, aloes and other exotic and Mediterranean plants. Surprisingly, today the island still has no running water, as it depends on other areas which are richer with water. The bay features a mere dozen homes-apartments of different colours and shapes, two restaurants and a small museum-gallery successfully run by Dagmar Meneghello. This “paradise garden” of the Meneghello family originated in the early 20th century, and achieved a special co-existence of natural beauty and culture. Professor of Botany and Mathematics, Eugen Meneghello, during a time when tourism had just started to develop, insisted on making his vision a reality – upon a rugged terrain, create an exotic arboretum. The first guest house opened its doors in the old family summer house in 1820, and still today Palmižana welcomes guests to almost untouched nature with just a discreet touch of modern life. Palmižana also represents an escape from civilization, but for the hosts the main motto is to provide a simple relaxing stay for their guests who have been loyal for decades and even generations. Apart from the unique nature and the fascinating cuisine there are also activities such as fishing, walking, sailing, all this together with the summer cultural stage, decorated with works of art by contemporary Croatian artists. Nevertheless, Palmižana continues to hide its wounds on its soil. After the end of World War II, it was completely devastated. During its rise back to glory, Toto Meneghello and his wife Dagmar heavily invested energy in order to see the return of the family tradition, and Dagmar’s love of art brought a stunning new dimension to their ‘paradise garden’. Her Palmižana art gallery became an unavoidable meeting place for artists and art lovers, and a place to promote the high quality of contemporary Croatian art. She didn’t stop there, proving she held the right skills in spotting young artistic talent as so many of today’s giants of the Croatian art scene featured their very first public presentations right there in Palmižana. On this estate, which during the 19th century, Gianbattista Meneghello prepared medicinal mixtures from wild plants, his youngest son Eugen, made his vision a reality at the beginning of the 20th century creating a wellknown tourist haven for artists, and many celebrities, but especially those in search of peace and harmony with nature. His fate was passed down to his descendants – his children Dagmar and Toto; Eugen-Toto, Romina and Tarin Meneghello, who today warmly share their personality among the Palmižana paradise.

Many will agree that Croatia is a country of wine and good food. Winemaking is an important activity of our country and has played a significant role since the time of the Illyrians, with recent years seeing an increasing growth - not only in production, but equally in quality. Wine festivals are common events held across the country, from areas truly recognizable by their wine namely Kutjevo, Međimurje, the Istria peninsula or Hvar to the major tourist hubs and urban centres which their visitors traditionally honour and become familiar with a wide range of both domestic and foreign wine producers. In the range of the festivals, the Zagreb International Festival of Wine and Culinary Art - Zagreb VINOcom leads the way in such events in Croatia and beyond.

HRVATSKOG ZAGORJA The superb atmosphere within Hrvatsko Zagorje

Coffee arrived in Europe in the middle of the 17th century, where it began to spread across nearby countries including Croatia. Coffee made its way to Croatia only about seventy years after the first mention of Viennese cafes, which saw the very first coffee shop in Zagreb open its doors in 1756. Primarily, coffee had its place within the upper classes of society, but it was only between the two world wars coffee had become widely available to the rest of the population.
The name Julius Meinl and its trademark red logo, a boy wearing a fez on his head, is a familiar sight across Croatia, but a lesser known fact is the intense presence within the Croatian market in the first half of the 20th century. The first Meinl shop opened in 1862 in Fleischmarkt in Vienna, which in 1905, led to the first store in Zagreb on Jelačić Square. Then in 1921, the main manufacturing facility for the entire region began operating - named JULIO MEINL in Vodnikova Street.
Between 1905 and 1939, Zagreb successfully saw the opening of 16 new stores – a place which sold a multitude of products from coffee, tea, rum, olive oil, cocoa to various wines, sugar, jams, chocolate, biscuits, pralines, kompot and other foods that at that time were not accessible all in one place. During the same period, 12 more stores were launched across Croatia including Dubrovnik, Crikvenica, Osijek, Pula, Split, Šibenik and Karlovac.

sign without which complete satisfaction would not be possible. Today, professional cups are produced from high quality porcelain baked at a temperature of 1350°. This material guarantees each cup will maintain the coffee’s temperature for a longer period, reduces damage during handling and holds the coffee’s unique full aroma much longer than the average coffee cup. “Sometimes you simply need to turn the world upside down to invent something new....”. Guided by this idea, one of the world’s most famous industrial designers, Matteo Thun created the Julius Meinl coffee cup. Crafted from premium porcelain, its features become a distinctive blend of unconventional and logical, traditional and modern. In many cases, coffee cups contain elements of the brand, such as colour and logo, yet this shape was inspired by part of the logo, which was drawn as far back as 1924, by Joseph Binder, a famous Viennese architect and designer. Turned upside down, the familiar fez becomes the spectacular body with a perfect egg-shaped cup interior, and its flashy handle is positioned on the left side, so that at any given moment it entices the need to focus on the main activity - enjoying the delight of your favourite beverage. The Julius Meinl logo and 90th anniversary celebrations Back in 1924, the famous Viennese artist Josef Binder created a small “little boy with a fez on his head” which is recognised today as the Julius Meinl logo. The Julius Meinl logo has evolved and adapted throughout history, modernized as time went by and in 2014 proudly celebrated its 90th anniversary.

kvalitetom, okus i inovacija. Julius Meinl 1862 PREMIUM kava sadrži pomno odabrana zrna 100% planinske arabice. Mogiana, najbolje područje kultiviranja u Brazilu, zajedno s istočnom Afrikom, kolijevkom biljke kave, čine jezgru ove aromatične, jake i mirisne kave. Rezultat spajanja tih dvaju kontinenata jedinstvena je kompozicija uravnoteženog okusa.
Julius Meinl 1862 PREMIUM coffee consists of first-class carefully selected, 100% upland Arabica beans. Mogiana, the finest area of cultivation in Brazil, together with East Africa, the cradle of the coffee growing, form the core of this aromatic, strong and fragrant coffee. The result of combining these two continents provides a beautifully blended unique, balanced taste.
The Arabica bean grows in mountainous areas between 800 and 2100 metres above sea level. Slower growth and temperatures between 17 and 32 degrees with a longer period of ripening positively affect the taste and quality of the fruit. After harvesting, the treatment process alone has an effect on the body, sweetness and sourness of the coffee bean after the removal of the pulp.
Debela i prošarana krema privlači poglede ljubitelja kave, a istodobno čuva aromu u šalici. Delikatna kombinacija okusa tamne čokolade spojena s okusima cedra uz slatkoću i tijelo brazilskih sorti kompletira izniman bouquet.
Julius Meinl 1862 PREMIUM captivates with its dark and slow roasting, which perfects the espresso into a strong, refined matured pleasure. Due to the degree of dark roasting, the mildly spicy fruit notes are incorporated into the long-lasting final aftertaste. Thick and mottled cream pleases the eye of the coffee lover, while equally preserving the aroma in every cup. The delicate combination of full bodied flavours of dark chocolate cocoa merged with flavours of cedar into a delightful combination, while the sweetness and the body of the Brazilian complete this remarkable bouquet. Julius Meinl 1862 PREMIUM is a ground coffee in fresh doses for each particular guest. Only freshly ground coffee guarantees the fullest flavour. ESPLANADE V I E W | 83

Naša predstava bit će ostvarena u suradnji s Opérom Comique iz Pariza, a francuski i hrvatski umjetnici zajednički će prikazati ovo remek-djelo ranoga dvadesetog stoljeća u režiji Stéphanea Braunschweiga.
This romantic story of the classic children’s fairy-tale of Cinderella by Charles Perrault, on the Croatian National Theatre stage in Zagreb is told with the musical language of Sergej Prokofjev and choreographed by Derek Deane. The Zagreb ballet of Cinderella is not only a captivating musical delight, but has been equally expanded as an elegant dance style, with the spectacular fairy-tale visual identity of the scenes and costumes, and an excellent performance of the Zagreb Soloists and ballet ensemble. The play was awarded the Croatian Theatre Award for Best Performance overall.

The exhibition of the painter, in and of himself, Đuro Seder (Zagreb 1927) at the Modern Gallery is conceived as the first and last complete retrospective of one of the most important Croatian painters of Modernism, Postmodernism and recent contemporary art. A witness of Croatian art history from the 1950s onwards, he is now, in his venerable age of wisdom, very much creatively active. The exhibition portrays the form of the intimate confession of the artist through his work in all periods of his activity, and equally a testimony of the sublimated spirit of the epoch, from a sample of more than 150 pieces of art, oils on canvas, works on paper and prints created between 1953 and 2015. The exhibition includes paintings completed just after his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1951 (Anthony Mezdjić, specialty - Marino Tartaglia), as well as classic works from the time of his activity in and membership of the pre-Conceptual or underground group Gorgona (1959-1966); then from the impossibility to the possibility of the painting and the New Image (1981), works from his much lesser known but very perspicuous Magrittean paintings; the rarely seen drawings of Sederian geometry; and Seder’s conversations with God, Seder’s expressionism conceived during the nineties as well as the self-ironical and joyful self-portraits of the Old Wild (2007) together with new paintings. www. moderna-galerija.hr
