Vrijeme leti, i to svake godine sve brže. Imam osjećaj da smo nedavno dočekali Novu godinu, koja je, čini se, pri kraju, i evo, sad nam je već 2016. pred vratima. Mnogo se toga zbivalo u hotelu, a neka događanja i zanimljivosti zabilježio je i naš dragi fotograf Grga pa ih s veseljem dijelimo s vama u novom broju našeg časopisa.

Time seems to fly past faster and faster every year. It feels we were only recently celebrating the New Year, and now here we are already with 2016 almost upon us. During the year so much has happened at the hotel, with interesting events captured by our dear photographer Grga, which we gladly share with you in this latest issue of our magazine.

Zbilja je divno imati vlastiti časopis. Iako tehnologija ide naprijed i preuzima medije, ipak volim miris svježe otisnutog papira, i onda kada nakon mnogo godina prelistam stare brojeve i vidim što se sve zbivalo u hotelu, tko je sve boravio ovdje, prisjetim se divnih trenutaka. A vrijeme je proletjelo i našem conciergeu Tomu, koji je 40 godina proveo u Esplanadi. Možda vam se čini mnogo, ali radeći u ovom hotelu, uvijek imate osjećaj kao da ste nedavno stigli. Šarmantni gospodin Rovišnjak za nas se prisjetio nekih zanimljivih događaja vezanih za svoj posao.

It really is wonderful to have our own magazine. Although technology is moving forward and taking control of the media, I love the smell of freshly printed paper. After many years when I flick through past issues and see everything that has happened in the hotel and all who’ve stayed here, reminiscing all those wonderful moments. Time has also flown by for our concierge Tom, who has spent 40 years at the Esplanade. It may seem a lot, but working at this hotel always feels as if you’ve just recently arrived. The charming Mr Rovišnjak has kindly shared with us some interesting events related to his role.

Svoj opseg posla proširila je naša šefica kuhinje Ana Grgić, postavši ambasadoricom kampanje Fish Forward u Hrvatskoj, koja promiče održivost riba, u sklopu WWF-a. Jeste li znali da danas u moru ima 95% manje ribe nego prije samo 50 godina? To je zabrinjavajuće, ali vjerujem da će Ana potaknuti na drugačiji pristup toj važnoj namirnici, kao i na neka nova razmišljanja. A novitete nam dovodi Loïc Amado – lansiranjem svjetski poznatog Ubera u Zagrebu. Nisam još imao prilike isprobati vožnju s pomoću te aplikacije, ali obećavam da hoću. Uz Amada, za razgovor smo zamolili i Hilary Alexander, koja je u Zagreb stigla prvi put, i to kao članica žirija mega popularnog TV showa Britain’s Next Top Model, koji se, moram ponosno istaknuti, dijelom snimao i u našem hotelu. No, više od svega veseli me promocija Zagreba mladim Britancima, kao nove destinacije prepune posebnih mjesta, događaja, ali i vrhunskih mladih dizajnera. Zagreb uistinu ima sve. Što više razgovaram s gostima, to sam sretniji i ponosniji što sam Zagrepčanin. Zaista jesam. Dovoljno je malen da imate osjećaj sigurnosti, a opet je i velik da ima sve potrebne sadržaje, od kazališta, šopinga, restorana, kafića, sportskih događanja, kulturnih zbivanja pa sve do muzeja, koji ga čine posebnim. Tako nismo mogli a da ne predstavimo najnoviji Muzej iluzija, koji je uistinu originalan i jako zabavan. Ima Zagreb i šetnice, divne i zelene ljeti, a svjetlucave u dane blagdana, kada sve postane nekako čarobno, kao uostalom i hotel Esplanade, koji početkom prosinca nabaci svoje božićno ruho i neodoljivo privlači toplim ugođajem i mirisom cimeta. Stoga, ako se nađete u blizini ili razmišljate gdje se ugrijati uz vrući čaj i božićni ugođaj, navratite – s veseljem vas očekujemo.

The extent of our activities was enhanced by our Chef de cuisine Ana Grgić, becoming the Ambassador of the Fish Forward campaign in Croatia, which promotes the sustainability of fish as part of the WWF. Did you know today there are 95% less fish in the sea than only 50 years ago? That’s a concern, but I do believe that Ana can encourage a different approach to this important ingredient and inspire a new way of thinking. One novelty brings us Loïc Amado - launching the world famous Uber in Zagreb. I haven’t yet had a chance to go for a ride via the app, but I promise I will. Along with Amado, we also spoke to Hilary Alexander who arrived in Zagreb for the first time as a jury member of the immensely popular TV show Britain’s Next Top Model, which I proudly point out, was partly filmed at the hotel. But most of all I’m pleased to promote Zagreb to young Brits, as a new destination full of special places, events, and excellent young designers. Zagreb truly has it all. The more I talk to the guests, the more happy and proud I am to be a citizen of Zagreb. Indeed, it’s small enough to have a sense of security, yet big enough to have all the necessary facilities, from theatres, shopping, restaurants, cafes, sports events, cultural events and all the museums that make this a special place. Naturally, we couldn’t help but introduce the newest Museum of Illusion that truly is an original and fun concept. Zagreb is full of paths, beautifully green during summer, and delightfully glitters during the festive holidays when everything becomes so magical, as does the Esplanade. In early December the hotel throws on its Christmas attire and irresistibly attracts a warm atmosphere and the sweet smell of cinnamon. So if you find yourself close by or you’re thinking about where to warm up with a soothing hot tea and a Christmas atmosphere, come on over – we look forward to welcoming you. Did you know there are countless paths where you can take a stroll in Zagreb? From well-kept walkways, like the Strossmayer promenade in the city centre, to one of Zagreb’s most beautiful paths – Dubravkina put, and not forgetting the most romantic of Zagreb parks - Zrinjevac.

Tijekom te šetnje pogled će vam zastati na starinskim trgovima, ponosno uzdignutim spomenicima i srednjoeuropskoj arhitekturi – od Kaptola preko Dolca i Tkalčićeve ulice do Trga bana Josipa Jelačića i prve velike javne skulpture u Zagrebu, postavljene 1866. godine. Upravo na tom glavnom gradskom trgu, na kojem se sastaju i prema kojemu se orijentiraju njegovi stanovnici, ali i turisti, krenut će naša šetnja.

These walks will take you on an intriguing journey as you take in the old shops, proudly raised monuments and Central European architecture - from the Kaptol, through the Dolac market, Tkalčićeva Street to Ban Jelačić Square, featuring the very first large public sculpture in Zagreb, set in 1866. It is on this main square, where people agree to rendez-vous, where residents orient themselves but equally where tourists start our walk.

U sredini trga smještena je prekrasna zgrada Hrvatskog narodnog kazališta, podignuta 1895. prema zamisli bečkih arhitekata Helmera i Fellnera, poznatih graditelja kazališta | In the middle of the square you come across the glorious building of the Croatian National Theatre, built in 1895 to the design of the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, famous theatre constructors Trg je nastao u podnožju dvaju naselja, Kaptola i Gradeca, uz izvor vode Manduševac, gdje su gradske vlasti u 17. stoljeću odredile da će se održavati sajmovi. Današnje zgrade nastajale su od početka 19. stoljeća. Na njihovim fasadama vidljivi su različiti graditeljski stilovi, od neostilova 19. stoljeća, bidermajera i secesije do moderne i postmoderne. Nakon što smo vidjeli kip bana Josipa Jelačića, rad austrijskog kipara Antona Fernkorna, krenut ćemo put Kaptola i katedrale Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije i svetih Stjepana i Ladislava. Već sam pogled na to velebno zdanje govori ne samo o ranom prodoru gotike na hrvatski sjever i internacionalizaciji umjetnosti nego i o tadašnjoj važnosti Zagrebačke biskupije te ugledu i moći njezinih biskupa.

atedrala je više puta stradavala u velikim požarima, ali tijekom obnova obogaćivana je vrijednim inventarom – baroknim oltarima (drvenima i mramornima) i propovjedaonicom kipara Mihaela Cusse, neogotičkim glavnim oltarom, velikim orguljama tvrtke Walcker iz Ludwigsburga. Jednako tako, katedrala ima najstarije vitraje u Hrvatskoj, a prema nacrtima Hermana Bollea katedrala je u unutarnjem uređenju dobila obilježja neogotike. Nakon katedrale, preko šarenila zagrebačke tržnice Dolac krenimo put Gornjega grada. Vikendima u prijepodnevnim satima uživat ćete u zvucima starogradskih i ljubavnih pjesama uličnih svirača na trgovima i ulicama Gornjega grada. Laganom šetnjom doći ćete na šetalište, uređeno sredinom 19. stoljeća, a nešto kasnije nazvano imenom biskupa Josipa Jurja Strossmayera, izgrađeno dobrovoljnim prilozima građana te među Zagrepčanima poznato kao – Štros. Pod drvoredom kestena šetači mogu odmoriti na klupi u društvu pjesnika Antuna Gustava Matoša te uživati u najromantičnijoj panorami Zagreba. Iako nije rođen u Zagrebu, Matoš je jedan od najvećih zaljubljenika u grad u kojem je odrastao. Živio je boemski, najčešće sam, umro je rano i ostao zapamćen kao buntovnik i sanjar. Njegova skulptura, djelo kipara Ivana Kožarića, postavljena je na šetalište 1978. godine.

stočni dio šetališta sa Zakmardijevim stubama osvijetljen je svjetiljkama koje je dizajnirao Hugo Ehrlich, a zapadni dio osvjetljavaju stare plinske lanterne. Starogradske svjetiljke osvijetlit će nam put do slikovite crkve sv. Marka – koja je jedna od najstarijih građevina u Zagrebu i jedan od njegovih simbola – župna crkva spomenuta još u 14. stoljeću, a građena u 13. stoljeću. Gotički svodovi i svetište građeni su u drugoj polovici 14. stoljeća, kada je crkva dobila i svoj najvredniji dio – raskošni gotički južni portal. Taj najbogatiji gotički portal u Hrvatskoj izrađen je u Parlerovoj radionici, jednoj od najpoznatijih srednjovjekovnih kiparskih radionica.

The square was built upon the foothills of the two settlements, Kaptol and Gradec, near the Manduševac stream, the city’s source of water, where in the 17th century, the city government determined it would hold fairs. Today’s buildings emerged from the beginning of the 19th century. Their facades display visibly contrasting architectural styles, from neo-styles of the 19th century, Biedermeier and Art Nouveau to modern and post-modern. Following our experience on the square, observing the statue of Ban Josip Jelacić, the work of Austrian sculptor Anton Fernkorn, we will set off strolling towards the Kaptol and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Stephen and Ladislav. The mere sight of this magnificent edifice speaks not only of the early penetration of the Gothic influence within northern Croatia and internationalization of art but equally the importance of what was then the Diocese of Zagreb and the reputation and power of its bishops. The cathedral was repeatedly damaged during wildfires, although during reconstruction it managed to enrich the valuable inventory. Baroque altars (wooden and marble), the pulpit by sculptor Mihael Cuss, the Neo-Gothic main altar, and the great organ by the Walcker company from Ludwigsburg. Interestingly, the cathedral has the oldest stained glass window in Croatia, and according to the designs by Herman Bolle the cathedra’s interior decoration gained the Neo-Gothic features. After the cathedral, through the colourful Zagreb Dolac market, we take a walk towards the Upper Town. On morning weekends enjoy the sounds of old Zagreb and love song melodies of street musicians in the squares and streets of the Upper Town. A leisurely walk will take you to the promenade, redesigned in the mid 19th century, and later named after Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer. Built with the voluntary contributions of citizens, this promenade is known affectionately to the people of Zagreb as – Štros.

U

nder the avenue of chestnut trees, walkers can take a rest on a bench in the company of poet Antun Gustav Matoš and admire the most romantic panorama of Zagreb. Although not born in Zagreb, Matoš was one of the strongest fans of the city where he was raised. He lived a bohemian, mostly alone, died early and remembered as a rebel and dreamer. His sculpture, the work of sculptor Ivan Kozarić, placed on the promenade in 1978. The eastern part of the promenade with the Zakmardijeve stairs lit by lamps designed by Hugo Ehrlich, and the western part features old illuminated gas lanterns. These old lamps illuminate our way to the picturesque church of St. Mark, which is one of the oldest buildings in Zagreb and truly one of its symbols. It was initially mentioned in the 14th century, and was built in the 13th century. The Gothic vaults and the sanctuary were constructed in the second half of the 14th century, when the church was given its most valuable element - the stunning Gothic southern portal. This richest Gothic portal in Croatia was made at the Parlerovoj workshop, notably one of the most famous medieval sculpture workshops of its time.

Jedna od najljepših zagrebačkih šetnica u samom centru grada jest Dubravkin put. Ova šumska šetnica prava je rijetkost i jedna od najomiljenijih gradskih šetnica. Nosi dašak prošlosti i povezuje šetače s prirodom i tlom kojim koračaju. Duga otprilike 2 kilometra, vodi nas do parka Tuškanac, nakon kojega ćemo se uputiti južno, preko Frankopanske ulice do Trga maršala Tita. U sredini tog trga smještena je prekrasna zgrada Hrvatskog narodnog kazališta, podignuta 1895. prema zamisli bečkih arhitekata Helmera i Fellnera, poznatih graditelja kazališta. Podrijetlo autora zaslužno je za veliku sličnost s bečkim kazalištem. Na trgu se nalazi i Zdenac života – fontana, djelo kipara Ivana Meštrovića nastalo početkom 20. stoljeća, kada je i postavljeno ispred Hrvatskoga narodnog kazališta. Kreativno rješenje, jednostavnost i impresionističko tretiranje plohe čini ju jednom od najljepših fontana uopće. Simboličku poruku isprepletenih ljudskih aktova koji posežu za vodom života, od staraca i ljubavnika do djece, svaki prolaznik tumači na svoj način i nitko ne ostaje ravnodušan.

Park je prepoznatljiv po aleji platana i dio je Lenucijeve ili Zelene potkove, koju čini osam donjogradskih trgova. Ime je dobio po hrvatskom banu Nikoli Šubiću Zrinskom i jedno je od romantičnijih zagrebačkih odredišta, zeleno i cvjetno-šareno zagrebačko šetalište i odredište ljubitelja umjetnosti i umjetnika. Tu su i fontane, vodoskoci te meteorološki stup, ali i umjetničke galerije koje cijeli park okružuju. U samom središtu Zrinjevca Glazbeni je paviljon, u kojem se od kraja 19. stoljeća do danas održavaju koncerti. Iako prekrasan ljeti, Zrinjevac je još čarobniji zimi. Snježni pokrivač i božićna rasvjeta zaokružuju ovu šetnju gradom i pozivaju da na trenutak zastanete te upijete dašak ove starogradske zagrebačke romantike. 12 | E S P L A N A D E V I E W | R E PORT AŽ A | REPORT

Moving on to one of Zagreb’s most beautiful city centre promenades - Dubravkin put. This is a rare forest promenade and undoubtedly one of the most popular city spots for a stroll. It carries scents of the past and connects with nature and those that walk along its ground. Approximately 2 km in length, it takes us nicely to the Tuškanac park, then heading south, via Frankopanska Street to the Square of Marshal Tito. In the middle of the square you come across the glorious building of the Croatian National Theatre, built in 1895 to the design of the Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer, famous theatre constructors. They are responsible for the great similarity with the Viennese theatre. On the square there is the fountain of life - a fountain, the work of sculptor Ivan Mestrović created in the early 20th century, when it was first placed in front of the Croatian National Theatre. A creative solution with simple and impressionistic treatment of surfaces make it one of the most beautiful fountains ever seen. A symbolic message of interwoven human acts that reach for the water of life, from the elderly to romantic lovers and children, every passer-by has their very own interpretation. There are few cities such as Zagreb, where the city streets and parks are so intertwined. Just a five-minute walk takes you from Marshall Tito Square to Zrinjevac. This park is particularly recognizable by the alley of plane trees and part of the Lenuci or Green Horseshoe, which passes through of eight city centre squares. It was named after the Croatian ban Nikola Subić Zrinski and is one of the most romantic spots in Zagreb, with its delightful green and floral-coloured Zagreb promenade – the ideal destination for art lovers and artists. There are also fountains, a meteorological column, and equally art galleries that surround the entire park. At the heart of Zrinjevac stands a music pavilion, erected at the end of the 19th century and still in use today for concerts. Although wonderful during the summer months, Zrinjevac is even more magical in winter. Covered in white snow and glittering Christmas lights round off the stroll around town and invite you to pause for just a moment and absorb a touch of the old Zagreb romance.

Nedavno je tako hotel primio nagradu Great Rail Journeys Award 2015. kao najbolji hotel u ovom dijelu Europe, čime je Esplanade prepoznat od strane putnika te prestižne britanske agencije kao hotel koji pruža iznimnu uslugu za potpuno zadovoljstvo gostiju njihovim boravkom u hotelu. Eminentni magazin Town & Country uvrstio je Esplanade na prestižnu listu 100 najboljih hotela u svijetu osobno odabranih od svjetskih putnika čija je misija otkriti najbolje od hotelske ponude. Ovi stručnjaci dio su ekskluzivnog Wendy Perrin’s Wow List kluba, za koji članovi često kažu da je u njega teže ući nego na Harvard. U sklopu tradicionalne manifestacije Dani hrvatskog turizma, hotelu Esplanade uručena je nagrada Turistički cvijet – kvaliteta za Hrvatsku, i to za najbolji poslovni hotel u Hrvatskoj u 2015. godini, na što je uprava hotela posebno ponosna. Također hotel je i ove godine primio priznanja Tripadvisora, najvećeg svjetskog turističkog servisa za ocjenu kvalitete usluga u turizmu. Certificate of Excellence 2015 Winner predana su hotelu za smještaj i uslugu te restoranu Le Bistro za iznimno dostignuće i pozitivne recenzije gostiju u proteklih godinu dana, dok je Zinfandel’s restoran uvršten u prestižni ‘Hall of Fame’ najboljih restorana koji pet godina zaredom primaju ovo priznanje. Inače, Certificate of Excellence nagrađuje svega 10 posto najbolje rangiranih objekata u svijetu.

The Esplanade Hotel, an iconic beauty of Zagreb’s hotel industry, from year to year continues to collect new awards. Recently, the hotel also gained the Great Rail Journeys Award 2015 as the best hotel in this part of Europe. The Esplanade was recognized by travellers of this prestigious British agency as a hotel that offers exceptional service for the complete satisfaction of the guest experience at the hotel. During the traditional event “Days of Croatian Tourism”, the Esplanade Hotel was awarded the “Tourist Quality Flower for Croatia” award for the best business hotel in Croatia 2015, which makes the management of the hotel especially proud.

ovodom proslave 150. obljetnice rođenja velikog finskog skladatelja Jeana Sibeliusa, a u sklopu programa Fall for Sibelius, Veleposlanstvo Finske u suradnji s hotelom Esplanade u listopadu je održao Tjedan finske gastronomije u šarmantnom Le Bistrou te ekskluzivnu Gala večer sa Sibeliusom u restoranu Zinfandel’s uz finske specijalitete i posebnu glazbenu poslasticu – nastup svjetski poznatog zbora Dominante. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, in October as part of the ‘Fall for Sibelius’ program, the Finnish Embassy, in cooperation with the Esplanade Hotel held the “Week of Finnish cuisine” in the charming Le Bistro together with an exclusive ‘Gala evening with Sibelius’ in Zinfandel’s Restaurant. Guests were treated to delicious Finnish specialties and a special musical treat - a performance by the world-renowned choir Dominante. All fans of music, culture and Finland enjoyed an amazing experience in honour of the great Finnish composer and gourmet Jean Sibelius. Ekipa britanskog showa sudjelovala je u modnom spektaklu Diva Style Dolls, humanitarnom događanju tijekom kojega je dvadesetak hrvatskih dizajnera u svoje kreacije odjenulo lutke lutkara Patricija Aguera. The entire project has launched the new season of Cro-a-Porter, organized by Viktor Drago, who along with Hilary features as a judge in this rather special episode of Britain’s Next Top Model. Hilary spoke to us of her praise for Croatian designers and pointed out there is certainly a place for them among the international fashion scene. Although the fashion world may seem glamorous, there is a multitude of hidden sacrifice, hard work, sweat and tears, but equally the overwhelming desire for fashion without which designers nor models would succeed, Hilary told us. The complete crew of the British TV show were genuinely delighted to be staying at the Esplanade Hotel, along with enjoying the architecture and atmosphere of Zagreb. In an interview with our magazine, Hilary revealed the inspiration and drive behind her fashion statement, whose style she is particularly fond of and how much the recognition of her working community means to her.

Modni događaj na kojem smo sudjelovali jedan je od najboljih koji sam ikada vidjela, a bila sam na tisućama modnih događaja po cijelom svijetu. Pokazali ste nam kombinaciju kulture, arhitekture, glazbe i mode. | This fashion event we took part in has to be one of the best I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to thousands of fashion events across the globe. You truly showed us a combination of culture, architecture, music and fashion.

Kako vam se svidio Zagreb? Kakvi su vam dojmovi i kako to da ste za snimanje odabrali baš Zagreb?

Z

agreb je grad kulture i umjetnosti koji vrvi dobrom energijom. Također je i grad s bogatom poviješću i prekrasnom starom arhitekturom. Posjetiti Zagreb prvi put predivno je iskustvo, a uz to, nas je jako zanimao vaš modni događaj koji se održavao u Umjetničkom paviljonu. Imate odvažnu modnu industriju i jednako takav odvažan modni event, što je sjajno odgovaralo i uklopilo se u British Next Top Model. Djevojke koje sudjeluju u natjecanju dosta su mlade i bilo im je jako uzbudljivo nositi odjeću vaših dizajnera. Modni događaj na kojem smo sudjelovali jedan je od najboljih koji sam ikada vidjela, a bila sam na tisućama modnih događaja po cijelom svijetu. Pokazali ste nam kombinaciju kulture, arhitekture, glazbe i mode. Bilo je čarobno. Glazba koja je svirala tijekom revije vratila me 30 godina unatrag, u Hong Kong, na modni događaj na kojem sam tada sudjelovala i na kojemu je svirala ista glazba. To mi je vratilo mnoga lijepa sjećanja.

Upoznali ste neke od hrvatskih dizajnera i vidjeli njihov rad. Kakvo je vaše mišljenje, mogu li dizajneri iz malih zemalja poput Hrvatske uspjeti na svjetskoj modnoj sceni? Jako mi se svidjela ružičasto-bež, gotovo prozirna haljina koju je na reviji nosila naša Megan, a Viktor Drago ju je izabrao za haljinu večeri. Tako da mogu reći da mi se sviđa ono što sam vidjela od hrvatskog dizajna. Osjeća se velik entuzijazam i predanost mladih dizajnera koje smo upoznali. Jako su strastveni i vezano za modu i vezano za vlastiti rad. Imaju mogućnost uspjeti na svjetskoj sceni, ali to iziskuje vrijeme. No ako pogledate na primjer Pariz, dizajneri koji tamo izlažu dolaze iz cijelog svijeta – Koreje, Japana, Libanona...

ko uzmete za primjer Elie Saab, on je iz Beiruta i njegova zemlja je imala nasilnu ratnu prošlost, kakvu ima i Hrvatska. On je jedan od najuspješnijih dizajnera u Parizu, a tako je s mnogim dizajnerima koji izlažu tamo. Zato je to moguće i za hrvatske dizajnere. Dizajner koji želi uspjeti mora imati strast i odlučnost i ako je toga dovoljno, može uspjeti.

Kakav će biti žiri British & Ireland’s Next Top Modela ove sezone? U žiriju sam ja, koja radim u modi već 40 godina i novinarka sam 26 godina. Abbey Clancy je top model. Bila je u prvoj sezoni British Top Modela, a također je i pobjednica emisije Strictly Come Dancing. Vodi mnoge TV emisije i pojavljuje se u različitim kampanjama. Paul Scolfor je muški top model, prilično svjetski poznat. Bitno je reći da i Abbey i Paul imaju iskustvo s modelingom tako da točno znaju što fotograf ili klijent traže, pa mogu mnogo pomoći djevojkama koje se natječu. 24 | E S P L A N A D E V I E W | I N TERVJU | INT ERVIEW

What do you like about Zagreb? What are your impressions of the city, and how come you chose Zagreb as a place to film? Zagreb is certainly a city of culture and art, overflowing with good energy. It’s also a city with an evidently rich history and wonderful old architecture. Genuinely, to visit Zagreb for the first time is a fantastic experience, along with our interest in your fashion event, held at the Art Pavilion. You have a very bold fashion scene and equally such a strong fashion event, which fits nicely with Britain’s Next Top Model. The girls taking part in the competition are relatively young and they were really excited to model the clothes of your designers. This fashion event we took part in has to be one of the best I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been to thousands of fashion events across the globe. You truly showed us a combination of culture, architecture, music and fashion. It was absolutely magical. The music played during the shows took me back 30 years to a fashion event I attended in Hong Kong, where the same music was played. Many fond memories came flooding back.

You’ve met some Croatian designers and seen their work. Do you think designers from small countries such as Croatia, can make their mark on the international fashion scene? I liked the pink-beige, almost transparent dress that our Megan wore during the show – a piece Viktor Drago hand-picked for the evening. So, I can definitely say I like what I see from Croatian design. I can feel the great enthusiasm and commitment of young designers we’ve met so far. They’re very passionate about fashion and the work they do. They have the ability to really succeed on the world stage, but that takes time.

f we take Paris as an example, designers who exhibit there come from all over the world - Korea, Japan, Lebanon etc. Elie Saab for instance, is from Beirut. His country went through a violent past, similar to Croatia. He’s one of the most successful designers in Paris, like so many designers who exhibit there. There are opportunities for Croatian designers. Designers who want to succeed have to hold passion, desire and determination and if there’s enough – they’ll succeed.

Who will be in the jury of Britain & Ireland’s Next Top Model this season? I’m in the jury – someone who’s worked in fashion for 40 years and been a journalist for 26 years. There’s also Abbey Clancy who’s a top model. She featured in the first season of the Britain’s Top model, and is also a winner of the show “Strictly Come Dancing”. She’s presented many TV shows and has appeared in various campaigns. Next we have Paul Scolfor who’s a world famous male top model. Needless to say Abbey and Paul have extensive modelling experience and know exactly what photographers or clients are looking for so they can really help the girls to compete.

Nicky Johnston je poznati britanski fotograf, također radi s nama i djevojkama, a posjeduje pravo “fotografsko oko”. Proputovala sam 45 zemalja s različitim fotografima. Svi zajedno možemo prepoznati kada djevojka ima posebnu modnu kvalitetu i karizmu koja se vidi ili na modnoj pisti, ili ispred objektiva, ili najbolje – u oba slučaja.

Nicky Johnston is a renowned British photographer, who is also working with us and the girls, and has a real “photographer’s eye”. I’ve travelled 45 countries with so many different photographers. Together, we can identify when a girl has special fashion qualities and charisma on the catwalk, in front of the lens or ideally - in both cases.

Koji je najvažniji savjet koji ste do sada dali natjecateljicama?

What advice would you say has been the most important you’ve given to the competitors?

D

a slušaju što im ljudi govore i upijaju sve savjete koje im dajemo. A dajemo im mnogo savjeta. Savjetujemo im da budu prirodne, ali da “surađuju” s kamerom izražavajući se pokretom tijela, ruku, pogledom ili osmijehom. Najvažnije je da znaju izraziti ono što fotograf želi. Da jako pažljivo slušaju upute jer svaki dizajner, klijent ili fotograf ima neku ideju za ono što bi model trebao činiti. I tu je na modelu da uoči razliku, razumije i interpretira.

Treba li model imati strast prema modi? Mislim da je to nužno. Ako model nije zainteresiran za modu, kako onda može razumjeti svoju ulogu u cjelini? Mora imati strast za modom i u trenutku kada odjene komad odjeće – bilo da je riječ o puloveru ili o nečem novom i avangardnom, mora znati kako to nositi i kako izvući najbolje iz tog komada. Razumijevanje mode ili strast za modom stvarno su bitna odrednica. Moda zahtijeva gledanje iz različitih kutova. Kada primjerice pogledate neke od haljina koje su djevojke nosile na reviji u Zagrebu, sve su bile jako različite i svaka zahtijeva drugačiji tip osobnosti, kretanja, izražavanja i raspoloženja.

Što ste najzanimljivije doživjeli kao modna urednica i novinarka? Ima toliko toga, no mislim da je jedna od najzanimljivijih stvari to što imam mogućnost upoznati, razgovarati i surađivati s dizajnerima, od kojih su samo neki Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Dolce Gabbana. Mogu vidjeti što je u backstageu i što se krije iza odjeće koju vidimo na pisti, razgovarati o dizajnu i posjetiti veličanstvene modne kuće poput Chanela ili Diora. Nikako ne mogu izdvojiti samo jedno od toga. Smatram da imam privilegij upoznati najbolje dizajnere na svijetu, poput Johna Galliana. To je vrlo posebna i jedinstvena situacija.

Koliko je svijet mode drugačiji iz vaše backstage perspektive?

M

nogo je drugačija perspektiva ljudi koji ne rade u modnoj industriji. Vjerojatno misle da je u modi sve posebno glamurozno. Što i jest istina, no iza scene je mnogo znoja, krvi i suza, ali i strasti, žrtve, discipline i napornog posla. Na tjednima mode, bilo da je riječ o Milanu, Parizu, Londonu ili New Yorku, vi vidite kako nečiji snovi postaju stvarnost i sada je ono što je dizajner zamislio u svojoj glavi prije godinu dana, ili prije osam mjeseci, sada na sceni. A sa strašću i željom, on ili ona oživjeli su snove.

Listen to what people say to them and absorb all the advice that we give them. In fact, we give them tons of advice. We encourage them to be natural, but still “work” with the camera, expressing body movement, hand gestures, glance, or a smile. The most important thing is to know how to express what the photographer wants. Really listen carefully to their instructions as each designer, photographer or client has a picture in their mind of what they want the model to do. It’s up to the model to spot the difference, understand and interpret the situation.

Should models hold a passion for fashion? This is a must! If the model isn’t interested in fashion, how can she understand the role as a whole? Models need to hold a passion for fashion and from the moment you put on a piece of clothing – from a sweater to something new and avant-garde, you have to know how to wear it and really get the best out of the piece. An understanding for fashion or the passion around fashion really is an extremely important asset. Fashion requires a perspective from different angles. When you look at some of the dresses the girls wore in the collection in Zagreb, they were all very different. Each and every one requires a different type of personality, movement, expression and mood.

What’s your most interesting experience as a fashion editor and journalist? here are so many! Thinking hard, I would say one of the most interesting things is having the opportunity to meet, discuss and cooperate with designers such as Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, Valentino and Dolce Gabbana. I can see what’s going on backstage and what’s behind the clothes we see on the catwalk. I can talk about the designs and visit the magnificent fashion houses such as Chanel or Dior. I can’t really separate any of these. I consider it a privilege to have met the best designers in the world such as John Galliano. I’m in a very special and unique position.

How is the fashion world different from a backstage perspective? The perspectives of people who don’t work in the fashion industry are very different. They probably imagine fashion to be all about glamour. This is true, but behind the scenes there’s a lot of sweat, blood and tears. There’s also passion, sacrifice, discipline and hard work. During Fashion Week, be it in Milan, Paris, London or New York, you see how one’s dreams become reality and what the designer conjured up in his mind a year or eight months ago, now unfolds on the stage. With passion and desire, he or she turns dreams into something real.

Što je vaša modna inspiracija?

What’s your fashion inspiration?

To je zasigurno etno. Sve što dolazi iz Južne Amerike, Indije, Pakistana, Tibeta, Maroka, Afrike. Volim tribal nakit, etno uzorke i tkanine. Inspirira me “stari svijet”. Nalazim nešto inspirativno u tome što su nosili ljudi prije dvije ili tri tisuće godina.

It has to be ethnic. Everything that stems from South America, India, Pakistan, Tibet, Morocco and Africa. I just love tribal jewellery, ethnic patterns and fabrics. I’m inspired by the “old world”. I find inspiration from something that was worn by people two or three thousand years ago.

Koji modni komad smatrate svojim zaštitnim znakom?

Which fashion piece do you consider as your trademark?

Mislim da odlično nosim tribal nakit. A nosim i mnogo high street odjeće, a ne npr. mnogo dizajnerskih komada. Na meni možete vidjeti i odjeću iz Top Shopa, H&M-a, Marks and Spencera. Nalazim komade koji mi se sviđaju, po razumnim cijenama, i onda ih kombiniram s komadima nakita.

I think I look great in Tribal jewellery. I tend to wear a lot of high street clothes, but not too many designer pieces. You’ll often see me wearing clothes from Top Shop, H & M and Marks & Spencer. I discover pieces that I like at reasonable prices and then combine them with pieces of jewellery.

Koliko vam u životu znače priznanja zajednice u kojoj djelujete?

How much does the recognition from your working community mean to you?

U

istinu mnogo. Ne mogu to ni opisati. Najveća mi je čast bila primiti OBE – odlikovanje Britanskog Carstva (Order of the British Empire). U Buckinghamskoj palači Orden mi je uručila britanska kraljica, što je vjerojatno najveća stvar u mom životu.

Upoznali ste mnoge modne ikone, čiji biste stil posebno izdvojili? Suzy Menkes, Cathy Horny i Hamish Bowles moja su tri favorita.

It means so much to me. I can’t even describe it. My biggest honour was to receive an OBE - medal of the British Empire. I went to Buckingham Palace to be presented the medal by the Queen of Britain, which is probably the biggest thing in my life.

Among the many fashion icons you’ve met, whose style would you say stands out?

ismo željeli klasičnu svadbu, i hotel Esplanade nas je ugostio na sasvim drugačiji način. U Smaragdnoj dvorani imali smo svečanu večeru uz lounge ugođaj, a nakon večere rezali smo tortu te otplesali prvi ples. Večer se nastavila u The Clubu hotela Esplanade, gdje nas je dočekao bend, i počeo je tulum”, ispričala je Sonja, koja već pet godina u hotelu Esplanade radi kao menadžerica prodaje. Ideju da imaju drugačiju svadbu – mirnu večeru odvojenu od rasplesanog tuluma, dao joj je sam direktor hotela, a ta ideja odmah je osvojila i mladence.

“We didn’t want a classical wedding, and the Esplanade Hotel perfectly hosted us in a completely different way. The Emerald Ballroom became the venue of our gala dinner with a lounge atmosphere, and after we ate, we then cut the cake and shared the first dance. The evening continued at The Club of the Hotel Esplanade where we were welcomed by the band and where the party really began,” said Sonja, who is now in her fifth year working at the Esplanade as a sales manager. The idea to have something different - a quiet dinner separate from the dancing party, was given to her by the director of the hotel himself, and it was this concept that immediately won over the minds of the newlyweds.

“Pomirili smo tradiciju i formu, stariji su mogli sjesti i popričati bez buke te u miru večerati, a mladi preuzeti stvar u svoje ruke na plesnom podiju, gdje se na kraju tulumarilo do šest ujutro”, prisjetila se Sonja, koja je ponosna što su u elegantnoj, tradicionalnoj i glamuroznoj zgradi hotela Esplanade napravili, kako sama kaže, pomalo pomaknutu i drugačiju svadbu – prvu takvog tipa u tom hotelu.

eni gala večere oduševio je njihovih 180 gostiju, koji su svi odreda uživali u sjajnim delicijama iz Esplanadine kuhinje, poput bifteka, paštete od guščje jetre i raznovrsnim drugim jelima. Vjenčanica, odijelo, hrana i piće bili su klasično elegantni, dok su detalji i ukrasi, poput pompona, kojima je bila ukrašena plesna dvorana i kavana u kojoj su se gosti okupljali, te različito cvijeće na svakom stolu svadbi dali poseban štih. Prevladavale su ružičasta, zelenkasta i bijela boja. Najljepši dan u životu mladenci su započeli spremanjem u luksuznom predsjedničkom apartmanu hotela, gdje se Sonja uređivala s prijateljicama, dok se u susjednom apartmanu spremao Alan uz podršku najbližih prijatelja. Prije negoli su krenuli prema najstarijoj zagrebačkoj kavani na Gornjem gradu – Palainovki, gdje su ih čekali uzvanici kako bi zajedno krenuli na vjenčanje u crkvu sv. Marka, mladenci su nazdravili u Lounge baru hotela.

“We hit a balance of traditional and modern touches. The older guests could sit down and talk without noise and dine in peace, while the younger ones among us took to the dance floor until six in the morning,” recalled Sonja who was so proud to have such an elegant, traditional and glamorous building as the Esplanade create a celebration just as she had imagined slightly different from other weddings - the first of its kind at the hotel. The gala dinner menu thrilled their 180 guests who were treated to the wonderful delicacies of the Esplanade cuisine such as beefsteak, gras pate and various other delightful dishes. The wedding dress and suit, food and beverages were classically elegant, while the details and decorations such as the pompons, which freshly decorated the ballroom and café where guests gathered with a variety of flowers dominated by shades of pink, green and white on every table really gave the wedding a special touch. To prepare for the most beautiful day of their lives, the lucky couple began to get themselves ready in the luxurious presidential suite, where Sonja put on her dress with friends, and Alan suited up in the apartment with the support of a few close friends. Before they set off towards the oldest cafe in Zagreb’s Upper Town – Palainovka, where guests were gathered ready for the ceremony at St. Mark’s Church, Sonja and Alan raised their glasses and toasted in the Lounge Bar of the hotel.

Although rain began to fall on their big day, there was nothing that could spoil the fantastic feel-good mood and perfectly organized setup. “All day we were relaxed and had beaming smiles, and at every moment I was just thinking to myself that this was our special day, just ours and I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face,” Sonja shares, adding that she didn’t even get a chance to change her shoes as she didn’t want to miss a second of her wedding celebration.

Kao svadbenu uspomenu gosti su ponijeli čokoladu čokolaterije Hedona, i to bijelu čokoladu s malinama, od čega je bila i svadbena torta. Tu ideju Sonja je „posudila“ od hotela, koji tradicionalno daruje goste u božićno vrijeme upravo čokoladama te čokolaterije.

“I really do consider this hotel as my own home, as we all stick together. I feel that cosy family atmosphere that you can always sense at the hotel. When those 180 people say everything was wonderful and felt all so excited then I really truly believe in it,” she added with a smile.

“Naša svadba bila je odličan spoj tradicije starinskog Zagreba na drugačiji, mladenački način. Htjeli smo spojiti najbolje, a pokazalo se da se, kada su atmosfera i organizacija dobri, sve može”, zaključila je Sonja.

As a wedding souvenir, guests were given gorgeous chocolates from the Hedona chocolaterie, with flavours of white chocolate with raspberries, the same flavour as the wedding cake. This is an idea Sonja borrowed from the hotel, which traditionally gives guests these chocolates at Christmas time.

“Our wedding was a marvellous combination of the old-fashioned tradition of Zagreb in a different, youthful way. We wanted to combine the best, but it turned out that when there’s a great atmosphere and strong organization, everything is possible,” concluded Sonja. This really did transform into the most unique day of their lives. Nakon što je pokorio 62 tržišta i aplikaciju za naručivanje vožnje lansirao u više od 350 gradova, Uber je stigao i u Hrvatsku, točnije u Zagreb. U zagrebačkom hotelu Esplanade već više od šest tjedana odsjeda Loïc Amado, zadužen za lansiranje Ubera u Hrvatskoj. | Having conquered 62 markets and launched in more than 350 cities, the driver-for-hire Uber app has finally hit Croatia - more precisely, Zagreb. Loïc Amado, in charge of launching Uber in Croatia has been a guest here at Zagreb’s Esplanade Hotel, for more than six weeks.

ber je platforma kojom se povezuju vozači i putnici na brži, jednostavniji, jeftiniji i sigurniji način, istaknuo je. Loïc za Uber radi godinu dana i pet mjeseci, a kao međunarodni launcher zadužen je za otvaranje novih tržišta te je tako u Zagrebu Uber postavljao od temelja – angažirao je lokalni tim, obučavao ga, a također i pustio prve aute na ulice te se bavio marketingom. Oduševljen kako je Uber kod nas prihvaćen, ispričao nam je kako cijela platforma funkcionira i što nam sve Uber priprema u budućnosti.

Uber is a platform that connects drivers and passengers in a faster, simpler, more cost-effective and secure way, he stated. Loïc has worked for Uber for a year and five months, and as the International Launcher he holds the responsibility of opening up new markets. Uber’s story in Zagreb literally started from scratch. He recruited a local team, trained them up and the first cars were ready to drive on the streets as he continued with marketing. Delighted how Uber has been warmly accepted here, Loïc explained to us how the entire platform works and what Uber has got in store for the future.

Kako vam se sviđa Zagreb? Koji su vaši prvi dojmovi?

U

Zagrebu sam već šest tjedana i odsjedam u Esplanadi, što je sjajno, jer većina ljudi ovdje zna za Esplanadu, što mi olakšava posao i sastanke. Zagreb mi se jako sviđa. Prekrasan je, ima bogatu povijest, a istodobno je prepun mladih koji žele izlaziti. Takva je publika zapravo i dovela Uber u Zagreb. Ljudi ovdje žele slijediti nove trendove, tehnologije i zanimljive novitete, tako je i Uber odlično prihvaćen, što smatramo odličnim.

Znači li to da je naše tržište dobro za Uber? Ovo je jako dobro tržište za nas, čak i mnogo bolje nego što sam očekivao. Prije nego što smo krenuli, 13 tisuća ljudi je skinulo aplikaciju, a u ovom zadnjem tjednu, od kada je Uber službeno pokrenut u Zagrebu, došli smo do brojke od 20 tisuća. Po tome vidimo da ovdje zaista postoji potreba za Uberom i da su ljudi oduševljeni što se sada zaista i mogu koristiti njime.

Što je toliko posebno kod Ubera? Čime je ostvario toliki uspjeh diljem svijeta? Počeli smo prije pet godina, kada su naši osnivači, dvojica prijatelja, bili u Parizu i željeli naručiti taksi, za što im je trebalo 45 minuta. Tada su zaključili da bi bilo divno samo pritisnuti gumb i vidjeti ima li koji taksi dostupan u krugu od pet minuta koji vas može odvesti kamo god želite. Taj projekt započeli su u San Franciscu. Aplikaciju su prvo otvorili samo za svoje prijatelje u San Franciscu, nakon čega je uslijedilo 350 gradova u 63 zemlje svijeta.

rvatska je 63. zemlja u koju je stigao Uber. Rast Ubera u pet godina je golem, a razlog tome je potreba za njim, i to baš na svakom tržištu. Na primjer, u Njemačkoj zbog cijena, jer su njemački taksisti jako skupi, u Južnoj Africi zbog sigurnosti; a Uber osigurava provjeru vozača, dijeljenje iskustava korisnika, a nudi i opciju kojom svoju vožnju možete podijeliti s roditeljima, prijateljima ili partnerom tako da oni znaju gdje ste i jeste li sretno stigli kući. Cijene se preko Ubera smanjuju. Ušteda za vozača je što će biti blizu putnika kojeg će voziti. Ne mora trošiti dodatno gorivo za odlazak po njega. Cijeli sustav je jeftiniji i učinkovitiji i za vozača i za putnika.

Kako formirate cijene? Kada dolazimo na novo tržište, istražimo sve – od zarade lokalnih taksista, prosječne plaće vozača limuzina, kolike su prosječne plaće stanovnika, itd… – pa sa svim tim podacima zajedno formiramo cijene.

What do you think of Zagreb? Share with us your first impressions. I’ve been in Zagreb for six weeks, staying at the Esplanade Hotel, which is great because most people here know the Esplanade which makes my work and meetings easier. I really like Zagreb a lot. It’s so beautiful and holds a rich history. At the same time it’s full of young people who want to go out. This is the audience that has mainly led Uber to Zagreb. People here want to follow new trends, cutting-edge technologies and interesting novelties, so it’s great to see Uber accepted here.

Does this mean our market is positive for Uber?

his is an extremely strong market for us - far better than I had originally anticipated. Before we launched, 13,000 people had already downloaded the app, and in this last week, when Uber officially began in Zagreb, we reached 20,000. By this we see a real demand for Uber and that people are delighted they can now finally use the platform.

What is Uber’s special attraction? Why has it gained such global success? We started five years ago when our founders, two friends who were in Paris trying to order a taxi which took 45 minutes. There and then they realized that it would be a wonderful thing to simply tap a screen and see if there’s a cab available within five minutes ready to take you wherever you want. And so, this project started in San Francisco. The app was initially open only to their friends in San Francisco, and since then opened up to 350 cities across 63 countries. Croatia is the 63rd country to welcome Uber. In just five years, Uber’s growth has been immense, and the reason is the demand which is the same in every market. For example, in Germany the price plays a key factor, as German taxi drivers are ruthlessly expensive. In South Africa, it’s the element of security. Uber provides authenticated Uber drivers, sharing the experiences of users, and offers the option to share details of your ride with parents, friends or partners in order to know exactly where you are and you’ve arrived home safely. Through Uber, prices are reduced. Drivers save money as they are closer to the passenger pick-up point and don’t need to spend extra fuel. The whole system is cost-effective and more efficient for both the driver and the passenger.

How do you calculate pricing?

W

hen we open into a new market, we explore absolutely everything - from the earnings of local taxi drivers, the average salary of the limousine driver, to the average salary of inhabitants, etc. With all this combined data we form the pricing.

Kakav vam je odnos s lokalnim taksistima? U Hrvatskoj smo uveli UberX, u kojem su naši vozači samo licencirani taksisti. Svaki se može pridružiti našoj platformi i zaraditi više novca. Tako da, umjesto da taksist stoji na stajalištu bez posla sat vremena, može otići na internet i preko Ubera pokupiti najbližeg putnika te zaraditi dodatan novac. Zapravo, oni su istodobno vozači bilo kojeg taksi-servisa i dio Ubera, ako to žele.

Kako ste odlučili da je ovo najbolji trenutak za dolazak Ubera u Zagreb?

Ranije taj potencijal možda nismo primjećivali, no cijela ova regija jako je sretna što smo ovdje. A ono što nas posebno privlači vaša je obala. Gradovi poput Splita, Dubrovnika, otoka Hvara, pa onda Zrće, Rijeka, otvaraju mogućnost za UberBOAT. Bila bi sjajna stvar imati takvo što pa da vas već sljedeće sezone UberBOAT vozi iz Splita za Hvar. Postoji mogućnost i za UberCOPTER, gdje bi unutar Uberove platforme bili i helikopteri. To već radimo u Capetownu, New Hamptonu, a također i između Cannesa i Nice tijekom filmskog festivala. Mogućnosti na hrvatskoj obali velike su, a i upiti stranaca koji ljetuju u Hrvatskoj su stalni. Tako da planiramo da sljedeće sezone Uber bude na vašoj obali.

Koji vam je plan širenja nakon Zagreba? Nakon Zagreba, koji je u regiji prvi dobio Uber, razmatramo mogućnosti za Split, Rijeku i Dubrovnik, dok se u regiji fokusiramo na dolazak u Beograd i Ljubljanu. Primamo pozive ljudi sa svih strana, što smatramo odličnim.

Što je s problemima na koje nailazite s regulatorima, lokalnim i državnim vlastima?

U

Hrvatsku smo došli s drugačijim pristupom. S gradskim vlastima, Ministarstvom financija te Ministarstvom pomorstva, prometa i infrastrukture razgovarali smo prije nego što je Uber pokrenut jer smo htjeli uspostaviti konstruktivan dijalog i model koji će svima odgovarati. Odlučili smo se za UberX. Tako da zasada radimo samo s licenciranim taksistima. Zajedno tražimo i bolja rješenja jer već se tijekom prošlog tjedna tisuće vozača bez taksi-licencije prijavilo na Uber.

How is your relationship with the local taxi drivers?

I

n Croatia, we’ve introduced UberX working with only licensed taxi drivers. Each can join our platform and gain more financially. So instead of a taxi driver needlessly waiting for a job at a taxi stand for an hour, he can swiftly go online and via Uber, pick up the nearest passenger and earn extra money. In fact they can be drivers of any taxi service and also a part of Uber, if they wish.

How did you decide this is the best time to introduce Uber to Zagreb? We’ve expanded extremely quickly across 350 global cities and what we see is that actually, we don’t choose the cities where Uber is used, but the cities themselves choose us. When we saw that 13,000 people had downloaded the application, this was the call for us to come to Zagreb as soon as possible. Perhaps we didn’t recognize this potential earlier, but now the whole region is very pleased we’re here. What we’re particularly attracted to is your coastline. Cities such as Split, Dubrovnik, Hvar Island, and then Zrće and Rijeka, open the door for the possibility of UberBOAT. It would be great to have UberBOAT already set up for next season running from Split to Hvar. We’ve also got UberCOPTER in the pipeline, introducing helicopters into the Uber platform. It’s already working in Cape Town, New Hampton, and also between Cannes and Nice during the film festival. The opportunities on the Croatian coast are broad, and the demand from foreigners visiting Croatia is permanent, so next season you can expect to see Uber along the coast.

What are your plans for expansion after Zagreb?

ollowing Zagreb, which is the region’s first city to embrace Uber, we’re considering the possibilities of Split, Rijeka and Dubrovnik. Equally, we’re focusing on the region introducing Belgrade and Ljubljana. We receive calls from people on all sides, which is simply great for us.

What about the problems faced by regulators, local and national authorities? We came to Croatia with a slightly different approach. Prior to launching Uber in Zagreb we spoke to the city authorities, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure. This was to establish a constructive dialogue and a model to suit everyone. We opted for UberX. So for the moment we’re working only with licensed taxi drivers. Together we’re looking for better solutions as already we’ve had an influx from thousands of drivers applying to join Uber without a taxi license.

Što možemo očekivati od Ubera? tvarno je jednostavno. Instalirate aplikaciju, koja vas nakon što se registrirate povezuje s prvim najbližim slobodnim vozačem. To je ideja i naš cilj: pritisnete gumb i u roku pet minuta vožnja vam je osigurana. Preko aplikacije možete vidjeti kako vozač na karti dolazi prema vama, možete vidjeti njegovu registraciju, kako su ga drugi putnici ocijenili i za koliko će doći na mjesto gdje se nalazite ili kamo želite da dođe. Također uz sebe ne trebate imati gotovinu, jer se sve plaća preko kartice koju ste ranije registrirali. Ono što naš sustav čini snažnim jest činjenica da se baš svaka vožnja – vozač, i putnik ocjenjuju. To stvara kredibilitet i održava kvalitetu usluge na visokom nivou. Cilj je imati jednako iskustvo korištenja Ubera u Australiji, Peruu, Kolumbiji i ovdje. Ako na primjer sletite u Zagreb, više ne morate tražiti mjenjačnicu ili bankomat, znate da je Uber dostupan i imate povjerenje u njega.

What can we expect from Uber? It’s really simple. First you install the app. Once you’ve registered you’ll be connected with the first closest free driver. That’s the concept, and our goal: tap the screen and within five minutes you’re provided with a guaranteed ride. With this app you can track your driver as he arrives on a map, check his rating by other passengers, and even see exactly how many minutes to your destination. Equally, another benefit is you no longer need cash, as everything is paid by the card you’ve registered via the app.

hat makes our system strong is the fact that every single ride, driver and passenger is evaluated. It creates credibility and maintains service quality at a high level. The objective is to have the same Uber experience in Australia, Peru, Colombia and here in Zagreb. For example, once you’ve landed in Zagreb, there’s no need to search for an exchange office or ATM, as you know that Uber is available and an app you can trust.

Aplikacija koja je osvojila nagradu MIXX na Danima komunikacija u Rovinju 2015. kao najbolja hrvatska mobilna aplikacija te nagradu na Tourism&Strategy festivalu u Parizu 2015. kao najbolja turistička mobilna aplikacija u Europi, lansirana je prošloga ljeta, a nove rute, Arty Zagreb i New Zagreb, nastale su u suradnji Turističke zajednice Grada Zagreba s agencijama Bruketa&Žinić OM i Brlog.

Earlier this year, this app won the MIXX award at the Days of Communication Festival in Rovinj 2015 as the best Croatian mobile app and also at the Tourism & Strategy Festival in Paris 2015 as the best tourist mobile app in Europe, launched last summer in cooperation with the Zagreb Tourist Board and the Bruketa & ŽinićOM and Brlog agencies.

Marka, Dolac, Kamenita vata i katedrala.

Let’s start at the location of one of the new routes named Arty Zagreb put together by famous Zagreb artists themselves. Film Director Dalibor Matanić, winner of the Golden Palm at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with Zvizdan, recommends the rail crossing at Trešnjevka where he shot scenes for his movie Fine Dead Girls, and the whole complex of the Student Centre is a suggestion by the painter Zlatan Vehabović. While you are here, have a rest at the popular bar Krivi put (The Wrong Way), a popular bar and beer garden on Savska Street, put forward by the talented street-artist OKO. While you are travelling on-the-go, there is always room for a good book – a suggestion made by singer Ida Prester who points you in the direction of the Booksa Book Club in Martićeva Street. You can fill your shelves and empty your wallets in some rather unusual places to shop such as the Croatian Design Superstore and Ulični ormar (Street Cabinet), where tourists are sent by designer Ira Payer and fashion designer Tamara Ivić. As the day comes to an end, Zagreb certainly stays awake as the actress Hrvojka Begović marks the vibrant Preradović Street as a must on the Arty Zagreb route, while the CFSN DJ collective sends visits to the Swanky Monkey garden bar in Zagreb’s Ilica Steet. Another fresh new route is New Zagreb helping tourists reveals the other side of the Sava River. Among the attractions of New Zagreb feature the must-see Museum of Contemporary Art and the mammoth residential building, the Hrelić flea market, the Museum of Street Art in Siget, Bundek Lake, the Chinese Pavilion at the Zagreb Trade Fair and the promenade along the river. On the Indie Zagreb route, experience the Europa Cinema, visit the intriguingly curious Museum of Broken Relationships, the Greta gallery Greta, mural waterfall in Petrinjska Street, the old Badel factory and “For the black eagle” Pharmacy.

he Hidden Zagreb route reveals spots such as mosques, the Botanical garden, the Croatian society of artists, Kallina Art Nouveau house and the Mushroom Museum. The Art Pavilion, Croatian National Theatre and the Maksimir Park are all added to the route titled Classic Zagreb, which with the first version consisted of the Lotrščak Tower, Zrinjevac Park, Tkalčićeva Street, St. Mark’s church, Dolac, and the cathedral.

Aplikacija turistu osim ponude i opisa lokacije, nudi kartu, izračunava koliko je metara udaljen od nje te koliko mu je vremena potrebno da obiđe cijelu rutu. Nakon što odaberu rutu, turisti obilaze lokacije i prijavljuju se na njih te na većini lokacija iz rute otključavaju jednu od nagrada, poput popusta na ulaznice ZOO-a, Tehničkog muzeja ili iznajmljivanje bicikla nextbike, ili pak dobiju majicu Zagreb Be There. Na ukupno 55 lokacija, kroz šest mogućih ruta predstavljen je Zagreb na jedan drugačiji način. Jedna od ruta je Space Explorer, na kojoj se nalaze lokacije svih planeta Sunčeva sustava iz umjetničkih instalacija Ivana Kožarića i Davora Preisa, pa se tako turisti mogu slikati kraj planeta Zemlje u Varšavskoj, uz Sunce u Bogovićevoj, dok će Pluton morati potražiti na Aleji Bologne.

Eventos Zagreb as a true metropolis offers a multitude of different events, but it is often a challenge to get information about them all in one place. This is exactly what prompted three students from the Zagreb Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, to create Eventos - an app that shows you everything regarding cultural and entertainment events in Zagreb. The students behind this innovative project, Dino Pohilj, Belma Gutlić and Mario Lovreković, plan to expand the app in cities all over the country. The app offers a wide range of events such as festivals, exhibitions, yoga course, dance schools or stand-up comedy nights, and along with the mobile version, there is also a web version for those who are not as devoted smartphone apps.

a početku našeg razgovora Rovišnjak se prisjetio daleke 1976. godine (nakon tri godine na sličnom poslu u Engleskoj) i početka rada na recepciji, kada je radio isključivo noćnu smjenu. “Za mladog čovjeka sa zapadnjačkim iskustvom takva živahna atmosfera, u kojoj su Taverna Rustica, kasnije Taverna Croatica, i Noćni bar hotela Zlatni lavovi radili do jutra bila je jako zanimljiva”, ispričao nam je. Ono što je ostalo isto, bez obzira na naprednost tehnologije i protok informacija, jest to što mu gosti dolaze s najrazličitijim pitanjima. “Čak i nakon 40 godina mogu me iznenaditi nečim novim”, istaknuo je. “Gosti traže različite knjige, poklone za djecu, zanimljive izložbe. Ako nešto i ne znate, trebate u što kraćem vremenu saznati”, kazao je. No takav je posao conciergea, i zbog toga nesvjesno, gdje god bio, upija sve informacije koje bi mu kasnije mogle biti od koristi. Njegov posao zahtijeva aktivnost i živahnost. Mora znati odgovore na mnogo pitanja, provjeriti informacije i stvoriti povjerenje kod gosta. “Kada dolaze gosti koji ne znaju kamo bi išli i što bi mogli raditi, ja, kao zaljubljenik u putovanja i s jako dobrim poznavanjem cijelog našeg kraja, gostima napravim skicu svega što bi mogli vidjeti i raditi dok odsjedaju u hotelu. Gostima se takav pristup sviđa, zahvalni su. Jednom smo dobili pismo jednog Amerikanca, podrijetlom iz Hrvatske.

To start our conversation Rovišnjak recalls as far back as 1976 (following three years in a similar role in England) when he began working at the reception desk, exclusively responsible for the night shift. “It was really interesting for a young man with western experience in such a lively atmosphere as the Rustica Tavern, later the Croatica Tavern, working at the night bar of the Golden Lions hotel until morning,” he told us. What has stayed the same, regardless of how technology has advanced and the flow of information, is that visitors still have different questions. “Even after 40 years, they’ll always surprise me with something new.” “Guests may search for different books, gifts for kids or perhaps interesting exhibitions. If you don’t know something, you need to find out as soon as possible,” he said. As part of being a concierge, unconsciously, wherever he is, he absorbs all the information that could be potentially useful at a later stage. His job involves a lot of activity and being pro-active. He needs to know the answers to a multitude of questions, double check the information and gain trust with guests. “When guests approach me not knowing where to go and what to do, as a travel enthusiast and someone with savvy knowledge of the entire region, I put together and share a plan of what to see and do while staying at the hotel. Guests appreciate this approach and are grateful. Once, we pleasantly received a letter from an American woman with Croatian origins.

The letter began by saying: “I couldn’t believe that via my travels I’d make good friends with a hotel member of staff,” said the friendly concierge. He points out that foreigners still prefer to consult with someone who is local. Although they come prepared, they are always met with a different situation in the city.

Once, guests had asked Mr. Rovišnjak about a traditional seafood restaurant named Mimica. “I explained this is a seafood restaurant, but I politely warned them about the confined space, told them about the good fish, but more as a casual bite rather than an elegant meal which is what they were looking for”.

Gospodin Rovišnjak govori engleski, njemački, francuski i talijanski, a prije tri godine, kako sam kaže – pod starije dane, počeo je učiti i španjolski. Primjećuje kako mu više učenje ne ide lako kao prije, ali stalno radi na sebi i usavršava taj jezik jer uviđa da je sve više gostiju iz Južne Amerike, a približiti im se na njihovu jeziku posebno je važno.

Mr. Rovišnjak speaks English, German, French and Italian, and three years ago, as he says – in his elderly years, began to learn Spanish. He notices that learning is not as easy as before, yet he is constantly working hard to improve his Spanish skills as he recognizes the increasing number of visitors from South America and creating connections in their language is particularly important.

Prvi dojam gostiju ujedno je i odlučujući dojam o hotelu. “Osmijeh dobrodošlice koji govori Drago mi je što vas vidim vrlo je bitan element, jer gosti emociju čitaju s lica. Često se dogodi da neki gost ima sklonost prema nekome od osoblja. Dogodi se neki klik i, osim što postanete nečija osoba od povjerenja u hotelu, nastane i prijateljstvo. Tako u zadnje vrijeme u hotel dolazi jedan stariji Talijan, visok 190 centimetara, koji mi je, kada sam mu rekao da sam ja Tom, rekao da je on Jerry. Kada treba sobu, više ne zove recepciju nego direktno mene. A kada znam da će moj prijatelj Jerry uskoro doći, brk mi se smije jer je on stvarno jedan ugodan i simpatičan gospodin”, ispričao je. Napominje nam kako se, koliko god vas gost voli i prihvaća, granica profesionalnosti nikada ne smije prijeći, a usluga uvijek mora biti na prvome mjestu.

And when I learn my friend Jerry is coming back, I have a radiant smile as he really is a pleasant and charming gentleman,” he said. He highlighted to us, as long as you respect and accept your guest, you can never exceed the limits of professionalism with the service always at the heart of what you do.

otel Esplanade privremeni je dom mnogim gostima koji mu se stalno vraćaju, ali je jednako tako i drugi dom svojim zaposlenicima. “Odjednom osjetite da se, idući na posao, osjećate kao da idete svojoj kući. Prihvaćate hotel kao svoj, pazite na svaku sitnicu, odani ste toj prekrasnoj palači, svjesni da je ona cijeli život hranila vašu obitelj”, kazao je gospodin Rovišnjak. Svaki put kada ide prema hotelu iz smjera Glavnog kolodvora i Tomislavova trga, uvijek ga iznova oduševi velebno Esplanadino zdanje. “Koliko god dugo radili, to poštovanje i divljenje ostaje. Ne naviknete se na raskoš i profinjenost hotela”, dodao je. Esplanada godinama ostaje vjerna sebi i donosi dašak stare Engleske, kožnih fotelja i salona u kojima su se okupljala muška društva uz kavu, konjak i cigare. „U ova nova vremena više nema dima, no sve su to promjene koje gosti s vremenom prihvate“, istaknuo je.

You treat the hotel as your own. Take care of every little thing. You feel loyal to this beautiful palace fully aware that this is place that has fed your family for a lifetime,” said Mr. Rovišnjak. On your way to the hotel, as you walk past the main train station and Tomislav Square, each time you are always amazed with the magnificent Esplanade building. “As long as you keep on working, the respect and admiration will always be there. But don’t get used to the luxury and refinement of the hotel,” he added. For years, the Esplanade has stayed true to itself sharing a sense of old England, leather chairs and lounges where the male society gathers with coffee, cognac and cigars. “In this new era, the cigar smoke has disappeared, but these are all changes that guests accept with the times,” he said.

The working day starts a day earlier, when you check guest arrivals and their requests, in order for the next day to be perfectly ready. “You simply never know what the day will bring; an urgent journey and insurance of the highest quality services.

Radni dan počinje dan ranije, kada se provjeravaju dolasci gostiju, njihove želje, da sljedeći dan sve bude spremno. “Nikada ne znate što će dan donijeti; hitna putovanja, prijevoz i osiguranje najkvalitetnije usluge. Učenje i usmjeravanja traju cijeli život, a s vremenom dobijete i osjećaj kako pristupiti kojem gostu u raznim nepredvidivim situacijama”, ispričao nam je. Napominje kako je politika hotela da uvijek treba dati uslugu više. Esplanada taj nivo drži već 90 godina, i tako će činiti i dalje. Među najstarijim je kolegama, za one mlađe kaže da su dragi i vrijedni, a on ih uči strpljivosti i detaljima. “Posao conciergea ne može se naučiti raditi u školi već je iskustvo i snalažljivost ono što čini dobrog conciergea”, ističe. Mlađima savjetuje da kada dođu na radno mjesto pronađu osobu koja najbolje radi i slijede njezin primjer, a s vremenom na osnovi toga mogu razviti svoj stil. Upravo su zagrebačka šarmantnost, odanost, pristupačnost, veliko znanje i iskustvo kvalitete koje gospodina Rovišnjaka čine izvrsnim conciergeom najluksuznijeg zagrebačkog hotela.

U

ne tako davna vremena, u malenom mjestu Betini na otoku Murteru kalafati, kako u Dalmaciji zovu meštre drvene brodogradnje, radili su drvene brodove, kojima su spajali otoke i istraživali predivne dubine Jadranskog mora. Starim kalafatima Betina se ovoga kolovoza odužila otvorivši Muzej betinske drvene brodogradnje, koji je odmah postao raj za sve zaljubljenike u hrvatsku pomorsku baštinu.

Not so long ago, in the small village of Betina on Murter Island, kalafati, the Dalmatian name for masters of wooden shipbuilding, worked defiantly on wooden boats, which connected the island and used to explore the beautiful waters of the Adriatic Sea. This August, Betina honoured its kalafati by opening the Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding, which immediately became a paradise for lovers of Croatian maritime heritage.

U Betinu je umijeće gradnje brodova polovicom 18. stoljeća donijela obitelj Filipi, podrijetlom s Korčule, također jako važnog mjesta za hrvatsku brodogradnju. Drveni brodovi su neizostavan dio povijesti Betine, tamo su se brodovi ako ne uvijek gradili, a onda barem redovito popravljali. Neizostavan su dio povijesti, ali svakako i života, jer su otočani najveći dio svojih posjeda imali preko mora, na Kornatima i bližim otocima arhipelaga.

The art of shipbuilding began in Betina during the middle of the 18th century with the Filipi family, who originated from Korčula, also a significant place in Croatia’s shipbuilding industry. Wooden boats are an integral part of Betina’s history, as boats were for the most part, built here if not regularly repaired. They form an indispensable part of history, and the way of life, as the islanders lives were secluded out to sea, and closer to the Kornati Islands archipelago.

Brend betinske brodogradnje je betinska gajeta, kojom se koristi već tri stoljeća na svim dijelovima Jadrana, a danas je kao brend prepoznata u cijeloj Hrvatskoj. Tijekom povijesti Betine betinski su kalafati prenosili svoj zanat s koljena na koljeno, a tako je i danas, jer još uvijek postoje kalafati koji betinsku gajetu izrađuju na tradicionalan način. Iz toga se izgradila i tvrtka, današnje „betinsko brodogradilište“.

Betina’s shipbuilding icon has to be the Betina Gajeta, which has been used over three centuries in all parts of the Adriatic, and today is a recognizable symbol throughout Croatia. Throughout Betina’s history, shipbuilders (kalafati) have passionately passed on their craft from generation to generation, as it continues to this day. Still, many shipbuldiers continue to create the Betina Gajeta in the original traditional way. From this, the current company was formed known as “The Betina Shipyard”.

z takvu tradicionalnu i bogatu baštinu Općina Tisno je u suradnji s Ministarstvom turizma i Ministarstvom kulture odlučila otvoriti muzej betinske brodogradnje, gdje bi se prikazala cjelokupna povijest te značenje betinske gajete za kulturnu baštinu Betine, ali i cijelog Jadrana.

With such a rich blend of heritage of tradition, the Tisno Municipality, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture decided to open the Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding. The aim was to showcase and display the entire history and significance of the Betina gajeta to Betina’s cultural heritage, and the complete coast.

Muzej je smješten u dvjema starim kamenim kućama koje su pripadale betinskom kalafatu Krešimiru Urodi i ima 250 četvornih metara, a prostor je, prema viziji šibenskog arhitekta Tomislava Krajine, osuvremenjen i podijeljen na tri etaže. Postav muzeja osmislili su dr. sc. Jadran Kale i Marija Krnčević Rak, kustosi šibenskog muzeja, a dizajnirao ga je Marko Barišić.

The museum is housed within two old stone houses that belonged to Betina Kalafat Krešimir Urodi, covering 250 m². The space was designed according to the vision of Šibenik architect Tomislav Krajina, modernized and divided into three floors. The museum exhibition was designed by dr. Sc. Jadran Kale and Mary Krnčević Rak, curators of the Šibenik Museum, designed by Marko Barišić.

Postav je podijeljen na dva dijela, od kojih je prvi dio posvećen ulozi broda u svakodnevnom životu Betinjana, njihovim plovidbama do maslinika i vinograda od Modrava do Tarca, preko ribarenja do korištenja gajeta za druge namjene. Drugi je dio postava posvećen tehničkim detaljima drva te posjetitelji muzeja mogu steći detaljan uvid u vještinu tradicijske brodogradnje.

The exhibition is divided into two sections. The first is devoted to the role of the ship in the daily lives of the people of Betina, their sailings to the olive groves and vineyards of Modrava to Tarca, fishing and using the gajeta for other purposes. The second part of the exhibition is devoted to the more technical details of the wood and helping museum visitors to gain detailed insight into the art of traditional shipbuilding.

Prikaz i prezentacija građe te više od 350 eksponata muzeja suvremeni su i multimedijalni, a posebno su vrijedne multimedijalne 3D videoigre s pomoću kojih djeca mogu učiti o drvenoj brodogradnji ili se okušati u virtualnoj gradnji brodova. Tijekom posjeta ovom zanimljivom muzeju posjetitelji mogu vidjeti dokumentarni film u kojem sami kalafati obrazlažu pojedinosti svoga umijeća. Izloženo je i pet maketa drvenih brodica koje je izradio Luciano Keber, a najveća je bracera duga 1,3 metra.

The presentation display consists of more than 350 exhibits both contemporary and multimedia. In particular, the museum features multimedia 3D video games engaging children to learn more about wooden shipbuilding. You can even try your hand at virtual shipbuilding. While here at this interesting museum, visitors can watch a documentary as shipbuilders themselves explain the intricate details of their skilled craft. The exhibition features five mock wooden boats made by Luciano Keber, the largest being the bracera at 1.3 metres long.

Umijeće gradnje betinske gajete zaštićeno je kao nematerijalno kulturno dobro, jer je ostalo gotovo nepromijenjeno od sredine 18. stoljeća do danas. Betinska je gajeta izvorno bila težački brod s primarnom transportnom funkcijom, a upotrebljavala se i kao ribarski brod. Gajeta je bila i obiteljski brod te su svi članovi obitelji morali znati upravljati njome. Umijeće gradnje betinske gajete utjecalo je i na urbanistički razvoj i izgled otoka Murtera, jer su se za gajete gradila pristaništa, skladišta i brodogradilišta, pa je tako do danas u vizuri otoka sačuvano bezbroj malih kamenih mulića.

The art of building Betina gajetas has been protected as an intangible cultural heritage, remaining almost unchanged since the mid-18th century to the present day. The gajeta from Betina was originally a farming community boat with a primary transport function, and widely used as a fishing boat. Gajeta was equally a family boat and everyone in the family knew how to manage it. The art of building Betina gajetas affected the urban development and the appearance of the island of Murter. Docks, warehouses and shipyards were built for the gajeta, and still today you can find countless small stone piers formed along the shoreline of the island.

etinska se brodogradnja razlikuje od drugih brodogradnji te posjeduje prepoznatljiv „rukopis“ ili „pečat“. Uz Umijeće gradnje betinske gajete razvili su se i folklorni običaji i plesovi koji se i danas njeguju u Betini. Muzej betinske drvene brodogradnje omogućit će očuvanje nematerijalnog kulturnog dobra te je svojevrsna garancija da će se na Murteru nastaviti graditi drveni brodovi.

Deservedly, Betina shipbuilding differs from others and owns a distinctive “stamp”. Along with the art of building Betina gajetas, folk customs and dances had been developed, which are still today, warmly cherished in Betina. The Betina Museum of Wooden Shipbuilding will enable the preservation of an intangible cultural heritage, and is a form of guarantee that on Murter, wooden boats will continue to be built. Promicanje važnosti odabira održivih proizvoda iz ribarstva Promoting the importance of choosing sustainable fish produce

R

iba koja se nalazi na našim tanjurima često je prošla dug put, kroz ruke mnogih lokalnih ribara ili prerađivača, no nerijetko i kroz ruke priobalnih ribara iz zemalja u razvoju. Dok je na jelovniku primamljivo naglašena: pržena tuna sa sezamom i špinatom, zapravo ponekad i ne znamo što točno jedemo… Odakle je riba došla, kako je ulovljena? Koja je to zapravo vrsta ribe, je li to žutoperajna tuna ili možda vrlo ugrožena mediteranska plavoperajna tuna?

Fish that eventually find its way to our plates has often been on a long journey, passing through the hands of many local fishermen or processors. Equally, often through the hands of coastal fishermen in developing countries. While the menu may seem tempting: Fried tuna with sesame seeds and spinach, the fact remains we do not always know exactly what we eat. Where is the fish actually from? How exactly is it caught? Is it the yellowtail tuna or maybe the vulnerable Mediterranean bluefin tuna?

Naše odluke o kupnji i konzumaciji ribe i ostalih proizvoda iz ribarstva imaju dalekosežne posljedice, kako na riblji fond, koji će se ako ribu nastavimo neodgovorno konzumirati do 2048. godine isprazniti, tako i na ljude koji će ostati bez ribe na tanjuru, ali i bez važnog sredstva za život. Posljedice sve manje količine ribe u moru već osjeća više od 120 milijuna ljudi čiji se prihodi oslanjaju direktno na ribolov i ovise o netaknutim i zdravim morima s dovoljnom količinom ribe.

Our own decision to purchase and consume fish and other fishery products hold far-reaching consequences. If we continue to consume fish irresponsibly, by the year 2048 all fish would disappear, as people will no longer find fish on their plates and fishermen will lose their important livelihood. The consequences of all small amounts of fish in the sea already affects more than 120 million people whose incomes depend directly on fishing and depend on untouched and healthy seas with plenty of fish.

Upravo kako bi se ovaj problem podigao na veću razinu, Svjetska organizacija za zaštitu prirode WWF započela je Europsku godinu za razvoj 2015. informativnom kampanjom koja promiče održivu budućnost za ljude i ribe u 11 europskih zemalja, među više od 300 milijuna građana. Tijekom triju godina poticat će ljude diljem Europe da gledaju izvan granica zemalja u kojima žive i saznaju više o tome kako izbor njihove hrane iz mora utječe na društvo i okoliš. WWF će nastojati povećati znanje i informiranost potrošača, korporativnog sektora i vlasti kako održivi proizvodi iz ribarstva mogu napraviti razliku. U tom smislu, globalno smanjenje siromaštva i ekološki napredak u središtu su ovog projekta, sufinanciranog od Europske unije. U projektu naziva Fish Forward sudjeluje i Hrvatska. “Problem je u tome što je more prazno, a o tome se ne govori. Na temelju nedavnih znanstvenih istraživanja dokazano je kako danas imamo 95 posto manje ribe nego prije 50 godina“, rekla nam je koordinatorica komunikacija i odnosa s korporacijama WWF Adria Martina Šubašić.

Pri kupnji svježe ribe obratite pozornost na veličinu ribe; ako je riba manja, veće su šanse da se još nije mrijestila, a već je bila ulovljena, što se masovno radi, čime se prazni more. Kada bi kupci tražili veću ribu, jer ne podržavaju izlov mlade ribe, sâm sustav ribolova polako bi se mijenjao. A to svatko od nas može učiniti.“

otel Esplanade prepoznao je neizmjernu važnost ovog projekta, odnosno problematiku vezanu za proizvode iz ribarstva. Vodstvo hotela odlučilo je u suradnji s WWF-om prilagoditi pristup i ponudu ribe u svojem restoranu, s naglaskom na onu koja dolazi iz održivih izvora.

Aiming to combat this very problem at a higher level, the leading organization in wildlife conservation (WWF), launched the ‘European Year for Development 2015’, an awareness campaign that promotes a sustainable future for people, fish and seafood among 11 European countries with more than 300 million citizens. Over a three year period, the project will encourage people across Europe to look beyond the borders of their own countries and learn more about how their choice of seafood affects society and the environment. WWF will seek to increase the knowledge and awareness of consumers, the corporate sector and governments on how sustainable fishery products can make a difference. In this respect, the global poverty reduction and environmental improvement are at the heart of this project, co-financed by the European Union.

roatia is actively taking part in the Fish Forward project. “The problem is that the sea is empty, which is never spoken about. Recent scientific research has proven that today we have 95% less fish than 50 years ago.” explained Martina Šubašić, WWF Adria Communications and corporate relations officer. She adds by explaining there are fish that come from sustainable sources. Fishing with acceptable tools that are not harmful to the environment and respect the minimum size of fish and fishing itself, does not harm the fish population size. “Today there are products on the market that are certified MSC and ASC certificates that guarantee sustainable fishing. However, in Croatia such products are rare.” “The viability of fish in this case is approached in a different way. When buying fresh fish, focus on the size. If the fish is small, the greater the chance it is too young to spawn and had already been caught in mass, which empties the sea. When customers ask for larger fish, due to not supporting the hunting of young fish, the fishing system would slowly change for the better. Something each and every one of us can do.” The Esplanade Hotel clearly recognizes the immense importance of this project, and the issues related to fishery products. In cooperation with WWF, The hotel management decided to adopt the approach and offer fish in its restaurant, with an emphasis on those that come from sustainable sources.

renutačno je hotel Esplanade prvi hotel u Hrvatskoj koji je odabran da sudjeluje u projektu, i da pazi na održivost ribe pri kreiranju jelovnika i promociju ribe koja dolazi iz održivih izvora. Iz WWF-a se nadaju kako će upravo Esplanade biti uzor i drugim hotelima i restoranima u Hrvatskoj i regiji da slijede taj put, ali i svojim gostima, koji će imati priliku saznati nešto više o navedenoj problematici te imati priliku odabrati održivu ribu na meniju. Ana Grgić, chef de cuisine hotela Esplanade, podržala je projekt i postala njegova ambasadorica. Kazala je kako je WWFov projekt odlučila podržati upravo zato što su riba i ostali proizvodi iz ribarstva bitan dio njezina svakodnevnog posla. “Samom spoznajom da je trenutačna situacija u našem moru i morima diljem svijeta u vrlo lošem stanju postajem svjesna da nam riba kao hrana postaje sve nedostupnija. Ako i ubuduće želimo imati ribu na tanjuru, moramo napraviti promjenu u svojim kuharskim/kulinarskim navikama. Odabir održivih proizvoda iz ribarstva jedina je garancija za budućnost i ribe i ljudi koji se koriste ribom”, ističe. Riblji specijaliteti pripadaju najukusnijim delicijama, a s time se složila i Ana. “Volim sve iz mora, od riba do morskih plodova. Postoji mnogo vrsta ribe i svaka je ukusna na svoj način, također, mnogo je načina pripreme jela s ribom, tako da osim što je vrlo zdrava, ova namirnica može biti itekako ukusna, bilo da se priprema vrlo jednostavno ili s mnogo začina i priloga. No, ono što je važno naglasiti jest da iako volimo ribu, u našoj kuhinji moramo obratiti pozornost na minimalne veličine i raznovrsnost kako bi se osigurala njena održivost”, rekla nam je. “Postati ambasador i promotor održivih proizvoda iz ribarstva meni je, kao osobi koja uživa u pripremi hrane, vrlo bitna aktivnost te se nadam da ću svojim primjerom potaknuti i druge da počnu razmišljati na sličan način”, kazala je Ana. Dodaje kako osobe koje se profesionalno bave kulinarstvom imaju mogućnost upozoriti na problem i osvijestiti velik broj ljudi.

WF uskoro pokreće i kampanju Za riblje sutra, kojom će se nastojati osvijestiti sâm problem, ali i ponuditi rješenja, odnosno preporuke kupcima kako da odaberu održive proizvode iz ribarstva. Uz Anu Grgić, ambasadorica projekta je i Barbara Kolar.

“The Esplanade Hotel strives to be a leader of positive trends, yet not just modern issues but also those of major importance to people and nature,” says Ivica Max Krizmanić, General Manager of the Esplanade. “For the time being we’ve started on the path to sustainability with small steps such as promoting fish that comes from sustainable sources. Our goal over the next few years is to ensure our menu exclusively features fish and fishery products that are from the sea and do not threaten the waters they live in.” he points out. Currently the Esplanade is the first hotel in Croatia that has been selected to participate in the project, ensuring the sustainability of fish when creating menus and promoting fish that comes from sustainable sources. The WWF hope to see the Esplanade as a positive role model and expect other hotels and restaurants in Croatia and the region to follow the same path. Equally, guests will have the opportunity to learn more about these issues and have the opportunity to choose sustainable fish on the menu.

If we want to see fish on our plates in the future, we have to make a change in our cooking and culinary habits. Choosing sustainable fishery products is the only guarantee for the future of fish and the people who use it,” he points out. Fish specialties are among the most delicious delicacies, as Ana agrees. “I love everything from the sea, from fish to seafood. There are so many types of fish and each has its own special appeal. There are many ways of cooking the fish, so apart from staying healthy, the food can be quite delicious, prepared very easily with a multitude of seasonings and side dishes. But what is important to emphasize is although we like fish in our kitchen, we have to pay attention to the minimum size and diversity to ensure its sustainability,” she told us. “For someone like me who enjoys food preparation, becoming an Ambassador and promoter of sustainable fishery products is a very important activity, and I hope that my example will inspire others to start thinking in a similar way,” said Ana. She added that people who are professionally engaged in cookery have the opportunity to draw attention to the issue and make a large number of people become aware of it. WWF will soon launch the Fish Forward campaign, which will seek to raise awareness of the problem but also offer solutions and recommendations to customers in order to choose sustainable fish products. Along with Ana Grgić, another Ambassador of the project is Barbara Kolar.

agreb i Hrvatska po prvi puta su se našli na mapi svjetski poznatih metropola koje je u sklopu turneje „Veuve Clicquot on the road“ posjetila poznata žuta prikolica vrhunske šampanjske kuće Veuve Clicquot nadahnuta dizajnom 50-ih godina prošlog stoljeća.

Zagreb and Croatia, for the first time featured themselves on the map of the world-renowned metropolis as part the “Veuve Clicquot on the road” tour with a visit from the famous yellow trailer of the top champagne house Veuve Clicquot, inspired by 1950s design.

Od 26. do 28. svibnja Zagreb je bio dijelom globalnog i ekskluzivnog Veuve Clicquot projekta koji ovime promovira umjetnost te kulturu ispijanja šampanjaca u kombinaciji sa ‘street food’ pripremom hrane. Ovaj ekskluzivni događaj prati i poseban kreativni gurmanski koncept za koji se pobrinula Ana Grgić, Chef de cuisine hotela Esplanade, na čijoj se ljetnoj terasi luksuzna prikolica privremeno i – parkirala.

From 26 - 28 May, Zagreb became part of the global and exclusive Veuve Clicquot project promoting the art and culture of drinking champagne in combination with ‘street food’ tasting. This exclusive event follows the special creative gourmet concept crafted by Ana Grgić, Chef de cuisine at the Esplanade Hotel, where the luxury yellow trailer temporarily parked.

‘Kombinacija povijesti ove slavne šampanjske kuće i Esplanadinog Le Bistroa, zajednička strast za kvalitetom, inovacijama, dizajnom i novim idejama, stvorili su prirodno partnerstvo koje će se vjerujem nastaviti i u budućnosti.’, naglasio je Ivica Krizmanić, generalni direktor hotela Esplanade te pritom pozvao sve gurmane da posjete Le Bistro.

The assortment included delicious fried shrimp on a salad of herbs, imaginative ravioli with goat cheese and champagne sauce, cold melon gazpacho with Veuve Clicquot foam, mini burgers with cheddar cheese and homemade ketchup made of olives and tomatoes, steak sandwiches with crunchy potatoes and sweet mascarpone mousse with irresistible chocolate fudge. It was a unique occasion for event organizers Miva Wine Gallery and the Esplanade Hotel to invite partners and guests to the terrace of the charming Le Bistro enjoying sparkling moments with Veuve Clicquot, fine snacks, a great atmosphere and music from DJ Luca Goya.

GIACOMO PUCCINI: LA BOHÈME Hrvatsko narodno kazalište Opera La Bohème svojim je melodijama i potresnom pričom preslikanom iz neposrednog života zaslužila epitet jedne od najuspješnijih i najpoznatijih opera uopće. Libreto je nastao prema romanu Prizori iz života bohema Henrija Muragera u kojemu je opisan studentski i umjetnički svijet pariške Latinske četvrti. U operi sudjeluje i Dječji zbor Zvjezdice, dok ansambl čine Tomislav Mužek, Davor Radić, Luciano Batinić, Alen Ruško, Martina Zadro, Ivana Lazar, Željko Grofelnik i drugi.

GIACOMO PUCCINI: LA BOHÈME Croatian National Theatre The tunes of La Bohème and deeply moving story taken from real life, have earned this opera the title of one of the most successful and most renowned operas of all time. Libretto was based upon the novel Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger, in which the author describes the world of students and artists within the Latin Quarter in Paris. This performance features the Children’s Choir while the ensemble includes names such as Tomislav Mužek, Davor Radić, Luciano Batinić, Alen Ruško, Martina Zadro, Ivana Lazar, Željko Grofelnik.

Izložbom Arhitektura i performans: grafike iz Kabineta Luja XIV. u fundusu MUO najveći zagrebački muzej predstavit će publici zbirku francuske barokne grafike iz znamenite edicije Kraljevskog kabineta Luja XIV. (Cabinet du Roi) koju u svom fundusu čuva od davne 1882. godine. MUO u svom fundusu čuva zbirku od ukupno 93 bakroreza i bakropisa iz te znamenite kolekcije, od kojih je za prezentaciju na ovoj izložbi odabrano 75 grafika.

ARCHITECTURE AND PERFORMANCE: PRINTS FROM THE CABINET OF LOUIS XIV IN THE MUO HOLDINGS Museum of Arts and Crafts, 3 October 2015 – 3 January 2016 The exhibition Architecture and Performance: prints from the cabinet of Louis XIV. In the MUO holdings at Zagreb’s largest museum, will feature a collection of French Baroque prints from the famous edition of the Royal Cabinet of Louis XIV. (Cabinet du Roi), which date back to 1882. PETAR ILJIČ ČAJKOVSKI – DEREK DEANE: ORAŠAR Hrvatsko narodno kazalište Orašar je jedno od najljepših djela klasične baletne literature, a tradicionalno se uobičajilo njegovo prikazivanje upravo u prosincu, uoči božićnih blagdana. U sto dvadeset godina od praizvedbe popularnost Orašara kod publike, osobito kod djece, stalno je rasla, i danas je to najizvođeniji balet na svijetu te vjerojatno ne postoji nijedna generacija mladih koja nije odrasla uz njega. Ova čarobna baletna priča vodi publiku u snove i prikazuje svijet različit od našega, slijedeći u tome težnju Čajkovskoga da dočara fantastično, čarobno, mitsko i legendarno djelo.

KOLEKCIJA PAVLA BELJANSKOG: BISERI MODERNE Umjetnički paviljon, 19. 11. 2015. – 10. 1. 2016. Izložba Kolekcija Pavla Beljanskog: biseri moderne predstavit će ponajbolja djela iz umjetničke zbirke cijenjenog kolekcionara i diplomata Pavla Beljanskog. Osvrt izložbe je na djelima u razdoblju od kraja 19. stoljeća do kasnih 50-ih godina 20. stoljeća, i na onim umjetnicima koji su se razvijali i djelovali u europskim centrima, poput Beča, Münchena, Praga, Pariza. Istodobno je riječ o umjetnicima koji su ostavili neizbrisiv trag i dali izniman doprinos u kreiranju umjetničkih tijekova u regiji. Njihov rad predstavlja okosnicu kolekcije Beljanskog koja istodobno predstavlja i antologijski izbor aktualnih umjetničkih tijekova europskih centara u kojima je sam kolekcionar živio i boravio tijekom diplomatske karijere.

PYOTR ILYCH TCHAIKOVSKY – DEREK DEANE; THE NUTCRACKER Croatian National Theatre The Nutcracker is one of the most beautiful works of classical ballet literature, traditionally shown just in December, on the eve of the Christmas holidays. In the 120 years since its opening night, its popularity has been growing constantly with audiences worldwide and especially children. Today it is the most performed ballet in the world and most probably there is not a single generation of young individuals that has not grown up with this ballet. This magical ballet story takes the audience into a world of dreams very different from ours. This reflects Tchaikovsky’s tendency to escape into the children’s world of fairy-tales and stories creating magical, mythical and legendary work.

THE PAVLE BELJANSKI MEMORIAL COLLECTION: PEARLS OF MODERNISM Art Pavilion, 19 November 2015 – 10 January 2016 The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection: Pearls of Modernism exhibition will display the best works from the art collection of famous collector and diplomat Pavle Beljanski. The exhibition emphasizes the works from the late 19th century until the late 50s of the 20th century including artists who have developed and operated in European centres such as Vienna, Munich, Prague and Paris. Equally, it underlines artists who have left an indelible mark and made an outstanding contribution in the creation of artistic trends in the region. Their works are the backbone of the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection that represents both an anthological selection of current artistic trends of European centres in which the collector himself lived and resided during his diplomatic career. THE VIENNA BOYS CHOIR Vatroslav Lisinski concert hall, 30 January 2016, 19:30 So small, yet so big by the Vienna Boys Choir with conductor Manolo Cagnin is heading to Zagreb in January. These Ambassadors of the Austrian Capital, but equally the voices of its multiculturalism, will take us on a journey around the world while performing celebrated choir miniatures in several languages. In an interesting and extensive program they will perform works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Rossini, Mascagni, Verdi, Schubert, Morricone, Strauss and many others. ZAGREBAČKA FILHARMONIJA CARL ORFF: CARMINA BURANA Koncertna dvorana Vatroslav Lisinski, 4. prosinca 2015., 19.30 h Veličanstvena Carmina Burana, kojom će ravnati mladi dirigent Veton Marevci, nikoga neće ostaviti ravnodušnim. Zajedničke snage orkestra Filharmonije, Akademskog zbora „Ivan Goran Kovačić“ te Djevojačkog zbora Zvjezdice već su uigran tim, siguran u nastupu i izražaju. Ovoga puta koncert ima humanitarno obilježje, a organiziran je u suradnji s Rotary Clubom Zagreb. Carminu buranu uvijek je zanimljivo ponovno čuti, a tome, osim snažnih zborskih nastupa – poput onoga u broju O Fortuna – pridonose i zanimljivi nastupi solista.

IN MEMORIAM MAESTRO LOVRO VON MATAČIĆ Zagrebačka filharmonija Maurice Durufle: Requiem, op. 9 Koncertna dvorana Vatroslav Lisinski, 19. veljače 2016., 19.30 h U sklopu Bijelog ciklusa Zagrebačka će filharmonija odati priznanje svojem dugogodišnjem šefu dirigentu Lovri pl. Matačiću koji je tu funkciju obnašao punih deset godina, od 1970. do 1980., te ima poseban status u hrvatskoj ozbiljnoj glazbi i kao takav pripada eliti europske i svjetske glazbe 20. stoljeća. Pod dirigentskom palicom Ivana Repušića izvest će prekrasan Requiem francuskog skladatelja 20. stoljeća Mauricea Duruflea. Uz Zagrebačku filharmoniju djelo će izvoditi Akademski zbor „Ivan Goran Kovačić“ te solisti, mezzosopranistica Martina Gojčeta Silić i bariton Leon Košavić.

Matačić who had held the position for ten years, from 1970 - 1980, gaining a special status in the Croatian classical music scene and as such belongs to the elite of European and world music of the 20th century. Under the direction of Ivan Repušić the audience will experience the beautiful Requiem by the 20th century French composer Maurice Durufle. The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra will be supported by the “Ivan Goran Kovačić” Academic Choir, soloist and mezzosoprano Martina Gojčeta Silić and baritone Leon Košavić.

The joint forces of the Philharmonic Orchestra, the “Ivan Goran Kovačić” Academic Choir and the Stars Girls’ Choir have already created a synchronized team, confident in their performance and expression. This time around the concert dominates a humanitarian character, organized in collaboration with the Zagreb Rotary. Carmina Burana is always interesting to hear again, and that, in addition to the strong choral performances – equal to that in O Fortuna - contributes to a popular soloists performance.
