Dear Esplanade Supporters, If you are anything like us, April signals that the Esplanade is about to enter the enchanting months. While the snow along the river is wonderful, the spring, summer and fall brings ever-changing colors and a renewed lure to the park.

No matter the season, we work every day to enhance and enliven Boston’s iconic green space by the Charles. We believe a beautiful park is even better when it is brought to life by events, programs, and community involvement. We strive to offer this to everyone in Boston, whether that be through volunteer clean-up days, fitness classes, strolling by beautiful murals, relaxing for concerts, running among the magnificent trees, or taking children to safe, clean playgrounds, and so much more.

Our mission is to make the Esplanade a place you look forward to visiting. But this can only be done because of your generosity. We could not accomplish anything without your support. Though COVID-19 limited all of us for a while, we re-activated many of our programs and began renewed efforts to complete important projects over the last year. The following pages illustrate some of what has happened because of your support. While pages 6 through 21 are full of exciting 2021 events and photos of our beautiful park, to us pages 22 through 30 represent the most important part of our community – your names. It is here we recognize all those who make the Esplanade what it is.

We have so much planned for 2022. More programs, our Esplanade 5K, GroundBeat concerts, new art murals, the Dock Party, and our second Esplanade Community Day to name just a few. Of course, further developments on Charlesbank Landing and Gronk Playground are not far off as well.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP

HATCHED: BREAKING THROUGH THE SILENCE

2021 marked 20 years of successful partnership between the Esplanade Association and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) in which both organizations share the goal to improve the experiences of the millions of visitors who enjoy Boston’s iconic riverfront park each year.

In celebration of 20 years of partnership with DCR, the Esplanade Association (EA) commissioned “Hatched: Breaking through the Silence,” a four week illumination and sound experience that provided a family-friendly and physically-distant celebration at the famed DCR Hatch Memorial Shell from January 22 to February 21, 2021.

The piece was an original 15-minute visual and sound performance led by Boston-based creative Maria Finkelmeier of MF Dynamics and was shaped specifically for the 80-year-old amphitheater itself. An estimated 30,000 people attended the event during the month-long run.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF FUTURE GRONK PLAYGROUND

PRUDENTIAL CENTER LIGHTS IN HONOR OF ESPLANADE

We were thrilled to be joined by Rob Gronkowski on Friday, May 7, 2021 at the Charlesbank Playground to accept a $1.2 million donation to the Esplanade Association and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, on behalf of himself and the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation.

On December 16, 2021 the top of the Prudential Center lit green in honor of the Esplanade Association and the park’s essential 64 acres of green space and picturesque tree canopy made possible by the work of our Board, Staff, members, and volunteers in 2021.

“Gronk” and the Gronk Nation Youth Foundation’s generous donation will fund the complete renovation of the Charlesbank Playground on the Esplanade. The new playground will modernize the current playscape and bring more accessible equipment to ensure that kids of all levels and abilities will be able to enjoy the space and have access to equipment that allows them to strengthen their bodies and imagination!

We want to extend a big thank you to the Prudential Center and Boston Properties for selecting the Esplanade Association as a participating nonprofit in Prudential Center, Boston’s Annual 31 Nights of Light holiday tradition for the second year in a row.

CHARLESBANK LANDING A TRANSFORMATIVE PROJECT FOR THE FUTURE OF THE ESPLANADE In September 2021, we announced a gift commitment to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that would fund the establishment of Charlesbank Landing, a two-acre riverfront park enhancement on the historic Charles River Esplanade in Boston.

Charlesbank Landing would transform an area of the Esplanade that has largely been closed off to the public since the 1990s by bringing visitor services, recreational and open space, climate change-minded environmental benefits, and cultural amenities to one of Boston’s most-visited parks. The project is anchored by a new, year-round Esplanade Riverfront Pavilion welcome center.

The Esplanade Association’s gift includes a commitment to fund at least 30 years of the site’s operations and maintenance expenses, including all costs of running the Pavilion facility. The total value of the gift is expected to exceed $20 million and will be funded by donations from members and supporters of the Esplanade Association.

The commitment represents one of the largest private gifts to the Commonwealth’s state parks system in history.

For two decades the Esplanade Association has proved itself a worthy — and generous — partner and a good steward of one of the gems of visionary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace. The Charlesbank Landing project is in keeping with that tradition.

EA RENEWS COMMITMENTS During 2021 the Esplanade Association reviewed and renewed its strong commitment to two critical issues that impact everyone locally, nationally, and globally. As stewards of the land and leaders among those who recognize the importance of accessible public spaces, we are bound by a belief that only by a commitment to intentional care for the park and its surrounding diverse communities will the Esplanade thrive. We formalized these commitments in 2021.

Climate Action As stewards of a critical green space in the city, the Esplanade Association must continually recognize, support, monitor, and address opportunities for a more resilient park. This includes enhancing our stewardship of the Esplanade’s ecosystem to foster biodiversity and human health, and ensuring our outreach and educational, cultural, and recreational programs incorporate environmental justice principles.

The Esplanade Association recognizes the civic responsibility we have to fortify these 64 acres in the face of a changing climate.

We are active participants in Boston’s Green Ribbon Commission and concentrate our efforts on promoting positive climate-focused action. Among many of our goals, EA plans to achieve carbon neutrality in the park and as an organization by 2030.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility With a long-standing commitment to making the Esplanade a safe and welcoming place for all Boston’s residents and visitors, we renewed our pledge to further build diverse partnerships, prioritize inclusivity and equitable representation in our organization and strategic planning, and advocate for accessible park infrastructure and amenities.

The Esplanade Association is committed to ensuring the Esplanade demonstrates the best of what public spaces can be and as an organization, we are dedicated to prioritizing diversity, equity, inclusivity, and accessibility in all that we do.

AN EVER-GROWING ESPLANADE TREE CANOPY 2021 marked the third year of the Esplanade Association’s Lasting Esplanade Arbor Fund (L.E.A.F.) initiative. During 2021, our horticulture team planted 48 trees of a variety of species in the park. Species planted included Flowering Cherry, Littleleaf Linden, Scarlet Oak, White Willow, and more.

Our L.E.A.F. initiative was designed to focus attention on the care, maintenance, and preservation of the park’s most visible, appreciated, but often neglected asset – its trees. This initiative helps secure the future health of park trees by setting guidelines for succession plantings to replace dead and declining trees, and making recommendations for preventative care, such as pruning and soil treatments.

Since 2019, 138 trees have been planted along the Esplanade. For every tree that is removed as part

of the L.E.A.F. initiative, the Esplanade Association will plant a new, young tree. In addition to these replanted trees, the Esplanade Association is also planting dozens of trees each year to fill gaps in the Esplanade’s tree canopy and increase its species diversity.

With the support of DCR’s Matching Funds Program, the Esplanade Association was able to prune 190 trees in 2021, including 100% of trees that could be identified as posing a public safety concern.

- Nelson Henderson Though the river is the namesake for Boston’s iconic park, the trees of the Charles River Esplanade create its grandeur. The shoreline and paths would not be the same without the shade, the calm, and the beauty the trees provide. And though trees may seem to last forever, they don’t. Like the river, we must steward these pillars of the park.

In the spring of 2021, Heather and Robert Keane, along with their daughter Sabrine, took action. They agreed the trees were critical to the Esplanade, but also believed short-term measures were not enough.

The Keane family wanted tree care to ultimately be exempt from budget limitations. They guaranteed

PROGRAMS IN THE PARK

We were thrilled to welcome our programs and events back to the Esplanade in 2021 as well as introduce new programs to the park! From our Frost Fit Winter Series and River Fit Summer Fitness Series featuring over 30 classes and 10 partners, to our very first Esplanade Community Day in August, new guided tours and more, we had a program-packed year on the Esplanade.

Our first in-park program to return to the Esplanade in 2021 was our Frost Fit Winter Series, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, which featured small winter workouts in the park (even on the coldest of days!) led by our partners at Lynx Fitness Club. We were also excited to partner with Wishroute during this Frost Fit season in which Wishroute hosted our month-long Esplanade Virtual Wellness Challenge from January to February.

Fast-forward to a few months later, the state of the COVID-19 pandemic had significantly improved and the Esplanade Association (EA) was able to plan for the return of in-park summer programming! Not only did EA bring back the park’s popular River Fit Summer Fitness Series, featuring the most summer classes EA has ever hosted, but EA also introduced new music and movement sessions with the Boston Music Project called Saturdays at Stoneman.

We hosted the park’s first-ever Esplanade Community Day in August 2021 which featured a lineup of events and activities on the Esplanade including the Esplanade 5K presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, a music and movement session led by the Boston Music Project, and a special edition GroundBeat Music Concert curated by BAMS Fest.

THE IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERS In 2021, volunteers dedicated over 1,400 hours of community service to the Esplanade, and we are so thankful to those who helped make the park we all love more beautiful. © SUZANNE MERRITT

From March through November, over 700 volunteers joined us on the Esplanade and removed 800 trash bags of park and shoreline litter, painted 72 park benches, assisted our horticulture team in various planting and gardening tasks, and generated positive energy on the Esplanade that inspired other park visitors to join our volunteer program.

MAINTAINING GARDENS & GREEN SPACE From planting 5,000 daffodils and hundreds of new perennials in the park to growing the Esplanade’s tree canopy by 48 new trees as part of our L.E.A.F. initiative, our horticulture staff provided essential care for the Esplanade in 2021.

Esplanade with an eye toward native plants and multi-season interest. 2021 was the third year our horticulture team initiated seasonal plantings at the Hatch Memorial Shell garden, which included planting hyacinths and daffodils in spring, violas in the summer, and mums in the fall.

Moondance En Plein Air Over 300 guests joined us for our 2021 gala, Moondance En Plein Air, on September 18. Due to the generosity of our guests, the evening concluded with over $1 million raised to support horticulture, historic rehabilitation, capital improvements, tree care, park programs, and more along the Esplanade.

This year’s Moondance En Plein Air was an open air event which allowed us to gather in a safe yet exciting atmosphere. For our 20th Anniversary celebration, the event was held at the iconic DCR Hatch Memorial Shell, where the Hatch Shell Oval 16

Lawn was beautifully transformed into a gorgeous picnic-style celebration including lawn games, and elegant furniture and seating.

Our 2021 Moondance En Plein Air was led by our remarkable co-chairs Missy and David Druley and Mary Lou and Marc Seidner. Guests enjoyed food and drinks by MAX Ultimate in a fantastic setting produced by FREED Events.

SUMMER DOCK PARTY A favorite event of the summer returned to the Esplanade in 2021 with nearly 300 guests joining us for our 10th Summer Dock Party at Community Boating, Inc. Our guests enjoyed a fabulous evening on the docks and in the lovely Eliot Garden, enjoying a variety of wine exclusively provided by Archer Roose and a selection of beer and hard seltzer from our partners at Night Shift Brewing.

Even with some occasional showers, the enthusiasm and support for the Esplanade was back after COVID-19 required canceling our beloved party in 2020.

We cannot wait to celebrate our 11th Summer Dock Party in July 2022 and hope to see you there!

ENHANCING THE ESPLANADE RESTORING AND UPGRADING PARK PLAYGROUNDS The installation of the Miriam & Sidney Stoneman Playground, in 2001, was the first major partnership project between DCR and the Esplanade Association. In a fitting lead-in to our 20th year in 2021, we completed $275,000 of renovations and improvements to the playground in 2020. We thank the Lewis Family Foundation for their generous support in helping us renovate and restore the Stoneman Playground in 2020.

In 2021, the Esplanade Association was awarded a $50,000 DCR Partnership Matching Grant to continue to make progress towards a more inclusive Stoneman Playground. The Esplanade Association and DCR will design and install new equipment in 2022, bringing more musical play, educational panels, and the first spinning equipment to the beloved playground.

The Esplanade Association also re-engaged Cambridge-based sculptor Mitch Ryerson to design a new wood art piece at the playground, as the original piece had to be removed due to decay in winter 2021. We look forward to installing a new, engaging art sculpture with Mitch in 2022. In the meantime, be sure to enjoy his Ipe Wood Bench and Black Locust Log Climber at the Esplanade Playspace!

IMPROVING PATHWAY SAFETY THROUGHOUT THE PARK Since the release of the 2019 Esplanade Pathway Safety & Improvement Plan, the Esplanade Association developed strategic proposals for Phase 1 design modifications at key intersections on the Esplanade and entered an agreement with Stoss, a Bostonbased landscape design firm, to implement our strategy. Stoss will work in partnership with Nelson/Nygaard, the transportation planning firm which produced the 2019 Esplanade Pathway Safety & Improvement Plan, as well as Neighborways, a Somerville nonprofit focused on community-based traffic calming efforts, to design and install pathway modifications that improve the park’s multimodal visitor experience.

The Esplanade Association looks forward to partnering with these firms alongside DCR and MassTrails to implement the first set of safety improvements in 2022.

FINANCIAL REPORT 2021 allowed the Esplanade Association to begin to get back to who we are just in time to also mark our first 20 years of work in support of the Esplanade. Virtual events moved back to in-person.

The Moondance Gala returned, albeit as Moondance En Plein Air. And we announced two major forthcoming capital projects – Gronk Playground and Charlesbank Landing (more on each below.) We are proud to share that our organization ended 2021 in our strongest ever fiscal position, thanks to the management of our staff and board and due to the incredible support of those who continue to view the Esplanade as their oasis through the extended and continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

After having to cancel our four biggest fundraisers in 2020, we were glad to have back this past year our Esplanade 5K presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, our Summer Dock Party, our TEAM ESPLANADE Boston Marathon team, and the Moondance Gala. The return of our core fundraisers ensured that we could continue to secure the long-term financial health of the organization, deepen our commitment to inpark horticultural care and vibrant programming, continue important community partnerships, and retain our first-rate staff.

This year, we raised $3.59m, including $2.43m toward our operating budget. As we have done since 2019, we continued to raise funds towards the organization’s first capital campaign – The Campaign for the Esplanade: Enrichment.

Connection. Nature. Approximately $1.17m was received in 2021 towards future capital priorities of the organization and to establish endowed funds for general operations, tree care, and to secure the leadership of the organization in perpetuity.

This amount does not reflect multi-year pledge commitments made this year, which will be included in our forthcoming audited financials.

Total operating expenses in 2021 totaled $2.09m with an additional operating transfer of $340k for the completion of future-year projects, including pathway safety improvements being completed in 2022, the fourth year of the Lasting Esplanade Arbor Fund (L.E.A.F.) tree planting initiative, and planned improvements to the Hatch Shell and Fiedler Field lawns expected in 2022 and 2023, respectively. (See page 11 for a story about an incredible $1m leadership commitment toward the L.E.A.F. initiative by the Keane Family.) The overall future-year transfer will total $1.5 million and include endowed gifts and other donations made toward

future capital projects like the Gronk Playground and Charlesbank Landing projects.

The exciting Gronk Playground project (detailed on page 7) was announced in May 2021 and will lead to a full-scale renovation of the Charlesbank Playground on the Esplanade. The Gronk Nation Youth Foundation announced a lead gift for the project – a $1.2 million commitment – that will fund the project which is expected to open in Fall 2023.

EA also announced the Charlesbank Landing project (detailed on page 8) in September 2021. The project will require up to $15 million in initial donations to fund construction of the new facility and 1.6 acres of landscape improvements and outdoor public amenities, with a desire to also raise $2 million toward a maintenance endowment for the facility and overall two-acre site. The specific construction timeline will be determined in 2022.

ADMINISTRATIVE

Despite the uncertainty of COVID capacity limits on programs at the start of the year, Programs & Projects spending rose from $1.1m in FY20 to $1.26m in FY21, a strong sign that the organization continues to prioritize the in-park visitor experience.

This spending also included maintaining our commitments to several longstanding partners, including the producers, performers, and creative entrepreneurs in our GroundBeat Music Series, and in completing the extremely popular Hatched winter illumination experience in January/February 2021.

For a year with continued challenges caused by the public health pandemic, EA is very appreciative for the support of so many in ensuring we ended the year on a financially sustainable foundation as we look to complete exciting new capital projects and expand our programming in 2022 and for many years to come.

With the return of fundraising events in 2021, development expenses returned to a typical share of overall expenses (17%) while core programmatic and project expenses were 60% of in-year operational spending for FY21.
