ESPLANADE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2024

Dear Esplanade Supporters,

As daylight and daffodils stretch along the river, Spring is our season to acknowledge your support of the Esplanade Association (EA), and to highlight impacts you made possible this year in the Charles River Esplanade. You are a vital part of a growing community who in 2024 helped expand access to and care for Downtown Boston’s beloved waterfront state park. Thank you!

As we hope you have come to expect of EA we continued to: plant and care for our beautiful trees and gardens throughout the landscape, and to advocate for and apply research in support of various environmental, pathway safety, and maintenance projects. Beyond this, we proudly increased the quantity and quality of our programs for all ages; initiated a Volunteer Ambassador program to deepen service opportunities caring for the park and park community; and reintroduced a historic amenity to enhance the enjoyment of the riverside: the beautiful Centennial Fountain at the Dartmouth Street Landing.

This was all accomplished as the last permits and approvals were finalized for the long-awaited Charlesbank welcome pavilion and campus project (near the Museum of Science). When complete in 2026, it will transform the Esplanade into a year-round destination of universal access to new cultural, recreational, educational and social connection. Our contractors and architects are ready to get onsite, so watch for the announcement of the groundbreaking in May and join us if you can!

We offer you the above snippets as an invitation to turn the page for a glimpse of 2024 milestones and what’s coming in 2025. Please also take a moment to review, and if possible, thank those individuals and organizations who contributed toward these efforts.

We know short summaries cannot fully capture the countless hours collaborating with many friends, volunteers, and partners, especially those at DCR and other Commonwealth agencies, all working tirelessly to ensure the Esplanade remains accessible and beautiful to more people from more places, and that Charlesbank becomes a reality. But we hope this report’s highlights brighten your days, and that you come to experience the joy of the Charles riverfront soon!

With gratitude,

MISSION STATEMENT

The Esplanade Association (EA) is the community-supported nonprofit organization that works to revitalize and enhance the Charles River Esplanade, sustain its natural green space, and build community in the park by providing educational, cultural, and recreational programs for everyone. Working in collaboration with DCR, EA is dedicated to improving the experiences of the millions of visitors who enjoy Boston’s iconic riverside state park.

DEIA Statement

EA believes, despite historical barriers, that public greenspace should and can benefit and reflect the diversity of all park users. EA commits in all aspects of our work—internal policies, municipal advocacy, strategic partnerships, indigenous land acknowledgments, and training and investment—to prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Learn more about EA’s commitment to DEIA here.

Lands and Waters Acknowledgement

EA acknowledges that the 64 acres of its care were originally inhabited by the Massachusett, Wampanoag and Nipmuc peoples in what was the tidal Quinobequin River, now called the Charles River. Through its work, EA strives to honor, respect, and recognize the connection between this site and our local indigenous tribes’ and neighbors’ ongoing stewardship of these lands and waters.

Climate Action Plan

EA is committed to our civic responsibility to maintain and fortify the park in the face of a changing climate. We will do this by enhancing stewardship of the ecosystem; fostering resiliency, biodiversity, and human health; producing outreach efforts that incorporate environmental justice principles; and, achieving carbon neutrality as an organization and in our park work by 2030. In 2024, EA published the official Climate Action Plan, which details goals, strategies, and actions the organization can take to ensure the Esplanade is prepared for a changing climate.

PARK ENHANCEMENTS

The Park Continued to Thrive in 2024

EA’s horticulture team works year-round to maintain the park’s natural beauty through plantings, pruning, and more.

2024 marked the sixth year of our Lasting Esplanade Arbor Fund (L.E.A.F.) initiative. Our staff planted an additional 12 trees in the park this past year.

Since 2019, the launch of the program, over 185 trees have been planted on the Esplanade, including over two dozen different species and varietals. In addition, extensive pruning and other critical tree care efforts have taken place. These carefully planned care processes create a healthier and more diverse tree canopy. L.E.A.F. initiatives continue beyond the initial 5-year tree planting schedule, focusing on ongoing tree care, succession planting, understory development, and soil improvements.

Centennial Fountain

Absent for a decade, the Centennial Fountain made its triumphant return to the Esplanade’s Dartmouth Street Lagoon in the Fall of 2024.

It first enlivened the riverfront in 1993 to commemorate a century of park stewardship by the Metropolitan District Commission, the predecessor to DCR. It ceased working in 2015 but was unable to be fixed at the time.

In 2023, EA pursued the conservation review to return this “living monument” to park stewardship to the riverfront. With approvals EA contracted with local vendors Water & Wetland and Dagle Electrical Construction Corp., and coordinated with DCR partners to, ensure a pilot installation in Fall of 2024, before celebrating the first full season, April-October in 2025.

We are grateful to the Lawrence and Lilian Solomon Foundation, especially emeritus EA board member David Solomon, for leadership support of this project.

Not only does the fountain celebrate the park’s history, but it has many positive environmental impacts to the lagoon. The fountain provides more efficient water flows that enhance the lagoon’s water aeration and circulation to improve river ecology, increasing beneficial oxygenation and reducing harmful algae growth. Formally celebrated in April 2025 with Ilyas Bhatti, the MDC Commissioner who conceived and installed the original fountain, the new fountain will enliven the riverfront in many ways: commemoratively, socially, ecologically, and aesthetically—both day and into dusk with its energy efficient LED lighting. Come see for yourself!

VOLUNTEERS

The volunteer program was in full swing from March to November 2024! Volunteers continued our mission of maintaining and enhancing the park by planting bulbs, painting benches, removing trash, and much more, with support of our terrific horticulture & programming teams. Participation in the volunteer program connects participants with the outdoors, with physical activity, with a sense of community, and tangible satisfaction in impactful stewardship of a beloved greenspace and bluespace.

Volunteer Ambassador Program

2024 marked the first year of the Volunteer Ambassador Program!

Nine individuals trained with EA staff for 12-week engagements to deepen their knowledge of and connection to the park and EA’s offerings. Throughout the summer and fall months, Ambassadors assisted EA staff in a variety of ways: supporting free programs/ events, facilitating groups in park care and stewardship, collecting data on park use, learning park history, and more!

After great feedback, EA is excited for the second year of the program in 2025!

If you are interested in learning more about the program, visit esplanade.org/ambassadors!

YOUTH AND FAMILY

Since the 2023 support of Esplanade fan and professional football champion, Tom Brady, and his family, EA has continued to expand our free youth and family programs in the Brady name. Once the new indoor-outdoor facilities at the Charlesbank campus open in 2026, EA will connect even more generations to the joy of play on the Esplanade!

Music & Movement

EA invited Boston Music Project teaching artists to guide our youngest park users and caregivers to weekly sessions in July and August. Participants discovered how motion creates sound, fostering healthy expression with instruments, with their bodies, and within the landscape of Esplanade playgrounds. With Brady support, attendance for these free sessions was up to 40 per week!

PROGRAMS

ChiP (Children in the Park)

For Greater Boston summer campers (ages 5-17), EA partnered with expert facilitators from many organizations to guide a full day of immersive physical, environmental, cultural and social play. They led activities at the Esplanade’s Teddy Ebersol Red Sox Fields for 120-200 kids at a time. Brady support significantly expanded the campers’ options to choose activities based on range of interests and to socially connect with those from across neighborhoods—all at no cost.

ARTS & CULTURE

Community Day & GroundBeat Concert Series

In 2024, EA kicked off our annual GroundBeat Concert Series with our May 19th Community Day, which featured family-friendly activities including a 5K, a vendor fair, lawn games, art activities, and a 4-hour performance at the Hatch Shell!

The GroundBeat Concert Series—initiated in 2018 in partnership with BAMS Fest and Catherine T. Morris—fosters opportunities to perform on the Esplanade’s most iconic stage with producers and artists who are committed to increasing inclusivity and diversity in Greater Boston’s arts scene.

Over 4,000 individuals supported all three concerts, which featured artists produced by three Black woman-led initiatives: AfroDesiaCity, GRATEFUL QUEEN, and Keep Ryzin’ Entertainment.

Join us at the 2025 Community Day on May 18th, which will kick start this year’s summer GroundBeat Series. Mark your calendars!

International Moves & Food

In the fall of 2024, EA launched International Moves & Food, a new series in partnership with Boston Dance Alliance (BDA)!

With a custom dance floor installed under the Esplanade tree canopy, BDA’s professional artist educators led interactive demonstrations on a variety of dance histories and choreographies— from Haitian Folkloric, to Irish Step, Latin Salsa and Classical Indian. Each class highlighted a different culture creating a unique experience in the park.

After grooving and moving each program would conclude with food corresponding to the dance session’s geographic and cultural tradition.

Haitian Folklore, October 2nd with Velouse Joseph of Jean Appolon Expressions
Traditional Irish Dance, October 9th with Rebecca McGowan and Natasha Sheehy
Latin Dance, October 16th with Metamovements
Classical Indian Dance, October 23rd with Souls of India

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTS

Guided Tours

Offered April through October, a dozen free tours invited groups to discover bird species, park history, horticultural projects and photographable sites along the river, all led by knowledgeable EA staff and partners.

Park Bench Chats

August through October, EA piloted Park Bench Chats with EA’s James & Audrey Foster Executive Director Jen Mergel. Offering fresh water, coffee and munchkins, EA’s staff could listen directly to how park users arrived at and used the park and gather on-the-ground feedback and answer questions about upcoming park projects and programs. Monthly bench chats resume April through October 2025.

Esplanade 5K

In 2024, over 775 individuals joined us in our Annual Esplanade 5K! The participants enjoyed the fresh morning air along one of Boston’s most popular running routes! The day also featured opportunities for park users to visit with members of EA’s staff and a robust vendor fair of community partners, like Mass Audubon, REI, and others, about the park ecosystem, upcoming projects, health opportunities, and more.

In 2025, EA will expand the 5K into a run and walk under the fall colors, on October 26. Look for opportunities for pre-Halloween fitness fun for the whole family!

13th Annual Dock Party

Every third Thursday of July, EA hosts Downtown Boston’s signal of summer: the Annual Dock Party! 300 park enthusiasts enjoyed a fantastic evening of music, dancing, food, and drinks as sunset reflected on the moorings at Community Boating Inc and the Eliot Garden.

Thanks to our guests who helped us raise awareness of EA’s mission as well as essential funds for the Esplanade’s projects (like restoring the garden and docks)! We are grateful to our partners, sponsors, and all who attended.

The 14th Annual Dock Party will be July 17, 2025!

MOONDANCE GALA

Every third Saturday of September, EA welcomes guests to gather under the Grand Tent for the annual Moondance Gala on Fiedler Field. This evening of glam for good not only highlights amazing contributions to the Charles River Esplanade, the Commonwealth’s historic and most visited state park, but celebrates those individuals who add vitality and purpose to the work of the Esplanade Association. During Moondance 2024 we honored Catherine T. Morris, founder of BAMS Fest and guide for EA’s own GroundBeat concert series, with the Arthur Fiedler Achievement Award. Like Fiedler did in his day, Cat champions arts in greenspace, not only to benefit the public, but also to ensure lasting equity, health, opportunity, and resilience in Boston as a whole.

After the award ceremony, EA supporter and wonderful auctioneer, Kate Chertavian, inspired a successful paddle raise and live auction, and the Ian Squared team created an exceptional video illustrating art’s positive impact on the park and the Boston community featuring some notable cameos. The evening was filled with laughter, dancing, and overwhelming generosity raising over $1.4 million to support EA’s future work.

Special thanks to Gala co-chairs, Claire & Adam Forkner and Elizabeth & Gonzague de Montrichard for their incredible commitment to making the event an evening to remember.

The timeline below illustrates how busy and productive 2024 was in the decade of active planning to realize a new Charlesbank campus for the Esplanade. The year’s work involved key City and State approvals, design completion, lease finalization, aggressive fundraising, as well as a focused Strategic Plan to assume successful operations of the site and ongoing care of the Esplanade for decades to come! For their countless hours of attention and expertise toward this complex project, EA’s staff is so grateful to colleagues from the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and Division of Capital Asset Management & Maintenance (DCAMM) as well as Maryann Thompson Architects, Michael van Valkenburgh Associates, Fort Point Associates, Goulston & Storrs, Tom Goemaat Project Management, and to all of EA’s own

Board members who have been guiding the project from vision to reality.

As this 2024 Annual Report is being produced, the contractor team at Lee Kennedy is mobilizing for construction, and final plans for groundbreaking will be announced for midMay!

As fundraising continues to navigate tariffs and construction contingencies and to ensure operations and maintenance costs of this forthcoming asset are covered, now is the moment to join the momentum of this transformational project. SUMMARY

During 2024, EA earned approximately $3.5 Million, primarily through contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and events. The Moondance Gala continued to be the most significant source of funds, resulting in net revenue of $920,000. We raised nearly $600,000 through individual contributions and $1.15 Million from foundations and some corporations. Over $215,000 in investment interest also contributed to the year’s income.

EA spent $3.8 Million, $155,000 of which came from donations made in prior years. Over $2.5M was spent on free programming, horticulture work and park maintenance, as well as project development and execution. This includes the start of construction for the Gronk Playground and purchase and pilot installation of Centennial Fountain. The balance of organization costs covered the events (including the Gala), and additional fundraising, marketing, and administrative work.

In addition to the operating funds, EA also actively fundraised for the construction of Charlesbank. In total, we received an additional $4.8 Million in 2024 toward the overall project cost. This includes new gifts, pledge payments and interest earned on prior gifts. Total spending on Charlesbank was $1.3 Million over this same period.
