FREIGHT TO THE POINT...

Well where do I begin?

Espace is ready for take off!

Without doubt, the biggest moment of the year so far was our Managing Director and founder leaving at the end of March. Thoroughly orchestrated, when Tony left, everything changed and yet nothing changed - such was the planning, training and preparation beforehand.

We celebrated the end of his career in the true Espace way, a presentation and speeches, good food, a few drinks and some dodgy dancing to an excellent covers band. A key theme throughout the evening was pride and it’s a recurring theme in this article too.

Tasty new Service for Indian Freight

What Tonys exit has given us is the space and freedom to explore our own direction. The Senior Leadership Team have carefully crafted a business plan which will bring about exciting changes in our service offering. We’re honoured to announce one of those new services to you in this newsletter. Everything we do, across all departments and all personnel is linked with a “golden thread” back to the goal of achieving our vision.

Green Milestones

There was more exciting news on the leadership front as our Sales and Marketing Director, Kelly Vasey, was recognised as the winner of the “Freight Leaders Award” at the Everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards ceremony in London in June. As Espace, since its inception, has always employed more women than men and have never viewed gender as factor, we were hesitant to nominate Kelly in a female only awards in the first instance. Having seen the profile of the other candidates and the blue-chip organisations they represent; we were immensely glad that we did. (cont page 2)

We’ve attended trade exhibitions in Birmingham and Munich and will be in Warsaw in Poland in the winter, as well as exhibiting in non-freight arenas too. It’s always so pleasing for the businesses to be recognised away from our traditional “midlands-freight” stomping ground and it’s a real testament to the whole team that Espace, our services and service levels are held in such high regard wherever we go.

We have a quiet revolution sweeping our back o ce too! Three new suites of software will be introduced this year giving our customers, suppliers and co-owners improved connectivity throughout. At the heart of designing the processes which the software supports are personal interactions. The way Espace conducts its business and the relationships we nurture will not be changing. We are very much a customer service business which specialises in freight, not the other way around. There’s a wave of positivity animating from Espace House, the feeling of having the entire team on board and pushing to achieve the company goals is a wonderful one.

Espace are Cleared for Take Off!

On July 25th Espace were invited to Birmingham airport by our air charter partners Chapman Freeborn. Members of our team visited Blue City Aviation, a specialist aircraft handling service company, to get a hands-on look at the charter process and to see just how quickly and e ciently a chartered plane can be loaded once organised.

Our Operations Director Vanessa Patel, Air Freight Operator Harsheet Singh, and Marketing Exec Oliver Dyas stepped foot on the runway at Birmingham Airport to experience the charter process rst hand. Having organised many an air charter in their time, to watch the charter team in action was a real insight.

The cargo side of Birmingham airport is built out of the historic Elmdon Terminal, which opened in 1939. It was last used by the public in 1984 when it was replaced by the modern terminals that we now know today. It was great for our team to experience a part of aviation history in the West Midlands.

Vanessa, Harsheet and Oliver got to jump in the cockpit of an Antonov AN26 that was stationed on the runway, awaiting orders for its next freight operation. The impressive Soviet-era aircraft is one of many of its kind that fell into cargo use after the fall of the USSR in the 1990s, an interesting piece of history that today plays a large part of the Just-In-Time supply chain.

Of course, everything at the airport runs like clockwork. Whilst on site the team also took a tour of a bonded warehouse which had just received a large shipment of aromatic mangos - soon be checked and moved onto their next destination. It was great for our team to witness rst hand just how fast and e cient time-critical freight and charter cargo is handled. Want to see what we can do?

The Espace Sustainability Focus Group

In our Winter newsletter, we shared our strategy to become carbon neutral by 2025. We have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure that we achieve this target. We have taken steps to measure our own carbon footprint in order to o set it and in line with our new system we are developing a carbon calculator to give all our customers visibility of their own carbon footprint in the near future.

Developing our own carbon calculator is a key step in our eco journey. What does this mean for you? Once our new system has been implemented you will have access to a clear dashboard that shows you exactly what how much carbon your shipments are responsible for. You will also have the choice to o set in various ways – with a project of your choice. With Global exports making up almost 30 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, both in terms of producing and transporting items, the transport industry has a key part to play in making vital changes for the good of the planet. Our carbon calculator and o set projects are being worked on with this in mind.

Earlier on this year we were proud to have been awarded an Ecovadis Bronze rating - ranking us in the top 50% of businesses for sustainability recognition levels. We are striving to improve our rating to Silver for the next assessment and have put together a sustainability focus group made up with members from each department of the business. The team have been working on various projects to promote sustainable working with the overall objective to become one of the top 25%. We’ll share more detail of our journey in our Winter newsletter.
