Espace d’Expressions et de Création

Volume 17, No 74, February – March 2023

The month of February has arrived, bringing its share of events of all kinds, as usual: that is to say, the four exhibitions to be held immediately after the holidays. So, business quickly picked up. It was essential to get back to work quickly to prepare these presentations and set up a form of organization to carry out adequate and professional assemblies. Meeting deadlines, while innovating in the way things are done, is not always an easy task. As you know, we aim to offer great visibility to our artists by highlighting their talent, while promoting culture. We always strive for the best, in all spheres of the visual arts. For this reason, Espace d'expressions et de Création (EEC) is one of the few organizations that has survived after so many years. The recipe is, however, a little more complex than it seems.

Our mission is proud to support Montreal's diverse artists in their exceptional work. This philosophy that drives us has stood the test of time and has crossed many borders over the years. Naturally, we have strengthened ties between the different communities, and are continuing to do so. That's why we can boast of showcasing our creators, especially through various events such as Black History Month, Anti-Racism Week, etc.

From January 12, 2023, the montages of the exhibitions went well, then the openings, among others, at the Julio-Jean-Pierre library, through the collective exhibition Forces et couleurs bringing together artists such as Eneida Hernandez, Elaine Ng'endo Kinyanjui, Edzer Prophète, Frantz Louis, Edwige Joseph, Luis Jacinto Argumedes Mateus and Joseph André. At the office of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, the group exhibition Altérité was held, bringing together about twenty artists and photographers, then at Georges Laoun Optician (Saint-Denis Street), it is the collective exhibition Papillotage that settled, strong of thirty artists and photographers.

The solo exhibition

Fragment by our curator general Joseph André was on display at Georges Laoun Optician (Sherbrooke Street West). With this in mind, our director had given himself a great challenge, namely to realize some works in a limited time for his solo exhibition. It should be remembered that the programming was already loaded with the three other group exhibitions conceived as part of Black History Month. He brilliantly rose to the challenge, according to his

wishes, and exhibited his creations under the theme Fragment. The criticism was unanimous from those present at the opening.

This year, we made a difference thanks to the exceptional event organized by Commissioner Joseph André and the team from the office of the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, as well as the exhibition and its shows presented by curator Jennifer Laoun-Rubenstein. The two openings were a great success both in terms of the number of people who participated and the atmosphere that prevailed. "Beautiful, grandiose and extraordinary" are all qualifiers describing these openings. In both cases, wine and good food accompanied these admirable works hanging on the walls, a gourmet and aesthetic mixture to the delight of those present. Our guests also took the opportunity to discuss many topics, including politics, due to the presence of Emmanuel Dubourg, Member of Parliament for Viau. The politician has been very generous in terms of time and attendance. He played the game to the fullest by agreeing to let his picture be taken with his admirers. A real gallery of selfies as a souvenir! And at Georges Laoun Optician, discussions revolved around artists and their works. In both cases, certificates were presented by the Right Honourable Justin P.J. Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, Georges Laoun Optician and the Minister of the Environment, the Honourable Steven Guilbeault.

There are other artists, collaborators of the EEC, who also started the year well, artistically speaking, and rather on a high note Li Shi was at the Eleanor London Public Library Gallery in Côte-Saint-Luc: an exhibition with the theme A fine day Spring sunshine comes over all the world Like God gently touching my head Gives me a new life Then, Kim Pov Eap presented her works on the theme Soul and Universe at the Maison de la culture de Montréal-Nord. Dali Wu occupied a space in the Maison de la culture de Notre-Dame-de-Grâce with his exhibition on the theme of Cloud. As for our friend, Jennifer LaounRubenstein, liaison officer for artists at Georges Laoun Opticien as well as

multidisciplinary artist and curator, she continues to give her workshops at the Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay.

Artists are experiencing a form of frustration, because the sale of their creations is not there, that's for sure. However, exhibitions allow us to present new content as opposed to traditional modes of exhibition in spaces frequented onlyby enlightened shipowners. Thanksto its original formula, EEC manages to reach all types of audiences, including people who do not usually attend exhibitions. An exhibition remains a privileged medium to promote the work of artists. It also allows you to meet other people in the field, which might not have been the case in other circumstances. As you know, this is also one of our objectives, which is to allow our artists to network, to make connections, even if the primary goal remains to promote them.

We are currently working on a promise that has been made or simply on the normal step that we feel is necessary in the process of moving forward with EEC: to provide a space for creation, innovation and collaboration among artists, while always promoting diversity and inclusion. These themes are the very basis of our raison d'être.

It will always be a pleasure to welcome you, to allow you to visit the permanent exhibition, in our space located at 950, du Rosaire Street, Montreal H2R 3B1. Do not hesitate to call us at 514 8136068 for a future visit.

OBITUARIES

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Philippe Allard Gaudreau, the son of our friend and artist, Martine Allard. Tributes will be paid to him in Quebec and British Columbia.

Our hearts go out to our friend and wish her all the strength she needs to overcome her grief and continue her journey during this difficult time.
