Franklin Central School Grants Diplomas To 26 By Patricia Tyrell Hosting the 184th Commencement Ceremony of the Delaware Literary Institute and Franklin Central School on Friday, June 28, 2019, Superintendent Brad Zilliox opened by quoting Bob Dylan’s song “Forever Young” and encouraging the soon-to-be graduates to always view life as an adventure. Reflecting on a number of humorous and memorable stories of students from the Class of 2019, Zilliox asserted that their ability to not take themselves too seriously will help keep alive their youthful
spirits and sense of adventure, even in the face of adversity and the unexpected. Giving purpose to the adventure of life, Salutatorian Tyler Gregory began his address with a quote by Ghandi, stating, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow; Learn as if you were to live forever.” Gregory empathized the importance of embracing the opportunities and challenges of life, living fully with integrity and without fear. Delhi Vietnam Veteran Gary Manning Weaves Mottos Into a Poem of Hope By Rosie Cunningham DELHI - For Vietnam veteran Gary Manning, the message is in the motto and that message is one of hope. It began with a Nov. 10 presentation to the Oneonta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and evolved into a passionate project that Manning became committed to and proud of. “I wondered, ‘What could I do differently in the presentation to make the members of DAR interested in what I was saying?’” said the Delhi resident. “I looked up the motto of the DAR which has an emphasis on the military. I then looked up all military mottos and mottos of the 50 states and the five United States territories, since I was in so deep. I realized the mottos could be woven into a common message

to capture the essence of what mottos are designed to do, which I believe is to give hope.” He then took the mottos he thought were relevant to each other and laced them together, the thread being his own words. “I fit them together to make a cohesive presentation to cover all of the mottos,” he said. What was created was a poem called “America’s Soul” which was published by Semper Fi, The Magazine of The Marine Corps League. “I thought the name ‘America’s Soul’ grabbed the essence of what I was trying to achieve some of the mottos date far back and are positive, positive, positive. We struggle hard to achieve the things in these messages.” It took several hours for Manning to secure all of the mottos, assemble them and perfect the poem. The 77-year-old was in the Marines and served from 19641967. He served in the Vietnam War and was deployed to the Dominican Republic as well. “During that time, men were expected to serve and I expected it out of myself. Some experiences were irreplaceable and some I could have gone fine without,” he said. “But nonetheless, they happened. But, my experience helped write “America’s Soul;” it set the stage. Without my military experience I would not have met the people who invited me to speak See Gary Manning page 12

Christina Zill (standing), representing Transition Catskills, asked Walton Trustees to move forward on selecting a location for an electric car charging station at a meeting on July 1. By Lillian Browne WALTON - In pursuit of a Clean Energy Community designation for the village of Walton, Kristina Zill, representing Transition Catskills, requested trustees resume their efforts to locate an electric car charging station at a meeting held on July 1.
Former Mayor Ed Snow had considered locating the station in the village’s municipal parking lot located between Veterans Plaza and the site of the former bowling alley (now owned by the village of Walton) between Delaware and Water Streets. The location, Zill said, is not ideal because the location would require a demand meter at an annual See Walton Charging Station page 3
Delhi Protests Separation Of Migrant Families By Alyshia Korba DELHI- With signs in hand, approximately three dozen local activists came together in front of the Senator Charles D. Cook County Office Building on June 28 to protest the separation of migrant families in detention facilities. The protest was organized by local activists Carla Nordstrom and Krisy Gashler to raise awareness for the children in immigration detention centers and to pressure Congressman Antonio Delgado to take a stance opposing the separation of families in detention centers. “No children died in U.S. detention in the previous 23 years, and seven children have died in the last year. That’s why we’re here,” Gashler said. This is not the first protest that Delhi has seen against the sepa-
ration of migrant families. One year ago many of the same activists protested in Delhi when the Trump administration enacted
a stricter immigration enforcement policy which led to the sepSee Delhi Protest page 4
