from Andes Central School in 1999, ECO Doig attended college at SUNY Cortland where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree. After graduation he worked as a surveyor for six months before he was called to attend the police academy in 2004 at age 23. After the academy, he worked with DEC’s Long Island Marine Unit until 2008, before transferring to his home county. ECO Doig is committed to supporting wildlife rehabilitation efforts and local rehabbers. Members of the Delaware County public have repeatedly expressed their appreciation for his efforts in capturing and assisting with the rehabilitation and release of multiple species. During his time as an officer, ECO Doig has handled various cases ranging from illegal deer to undersized fish and illegal possession of rattlesnakes. He was also

involved in a case with multiple federal charges for the illegal commercialization of yellowfin tuna and mako shark. In 2017, Doig became a member of the NYSDEC Unmanned Arial System (UAS) Drone Unit, which utilizes the aircraft to better respond to emergencies and protect the public. ECO Doig currently lives in Walton, with his wife Jennifer and their two daughters, Hannah and Kaitlyn. When he is not working, Doig enjoys spending time with his family, camping, mountain biking, traveling, golfing, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors.

This year’s DelawareOtsego Audubon Society field trip to view wintering bald eagles around the Delaware County rivers and reservoirs is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11. Eagles concentrate around open water in the region to feed, and recent trips have turned up 20+ birds, including 30 last year. Other raptors and waterfowl are usually sighted also. The group will stop at a local restaurant for lunch for interested participants. The trip will leave the Dietz Street parking lot across from the YMCA in Oneonta at 7:30 a.m. Carpooling is strongly encour-

New Yorkers can greet 2020 with a choice of 85 guided hikes at state parks, historic sites, wildlife areas, trails and public lands sponsored by the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the state Department of Environmental Conservation. In its ninth year, the annual First Day Hikes program includes seal watches along an Atlantic Ocean bay and a bird count in the Capital Region and hikes to fire towers in the Adirondacks/Catskills, along parts of the historic New York City drinking water system in the Hudson Valley, waterfalls in the Finger Lakes region and historic forts along the Great Lakes. Hikes are being offered at 55 state parks and historic sites as well as 23 DEC state lands, wildlife areas, Forest Preserve trails and environmental education centers. Some sites are offering more than one hike, with most between one and five miles. Hikes will be guided by parks staff, members of park’s Friends Groups and other volunteers. New this year will be a First Day hike at Shirley Chisholm State Park in Brooklyn, the newest state park, opened in July; a snowmobile ride along the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park in the western part of the state; and first-time events in the Catskills.
