Hiker Falls to Death in Hancock By Lillian Browne

James Cooros was also at the scene to make the pronouncement of death, Dembinska said. Because of the rough, difficult terrain and the amount of light available to recovery crews, Hancock Fire Chief Rolland “Boomer” Bojo said, extrication of the fallen hiker was delayed until Monday, May 28. Forest Rangers stayed with the deceased hiker throughout the night and extrication was successfully completed at 2:45 p.m. Monday afternoon. The victim’s name will be released once the family is notified, Dembinska said.

HANCOCK - New York State Police have confirmed the death of a unnamed male in his mid-20s, who was hiking at Jensens Ledges in Lordville in the town of Hancock and fell to his death while taking photos on Sunday, May 27. According to Trooper Aga Dembinska, a 911 call was received by the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, who responded to the scene in Delaware County, via Long Eddy, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday night. Shortly after, troopers arrived and took over the case due to See Hiker Falls page 4 geographical jurisdiction. Hancock, Long Eddy, Equinunk and Beach Lake Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services crews, Upper Delaware EMS and New York State Forest Rangers also assisted at the scene. Upon arriving at the scene, forest rangers and troopers assessed the fallen-hiker and determined a recovery, rather than a rescue, was necessary. The American Legion Color Guard gave a three-volley salute at the Veterans’ Memorial in front of the former armory on Stockton Avenue in Walton, as part of Memorial Day ceremonies.

Walton Commemorates Memorial Day By Lillian Browne WALTON - The somber undertones of Memorial Day were felt in the traditional color guard ceremonies, laying of wreaths at memorials, solo trumpeting of ‘Taps’ and the flying of flags throughout the Walton community on Monday, March 29. The parade, which had fewer participants than in years past, was not short on ceremony or commemoration of military

service men and women who lost their lives while in service to their country. The parade traveled from the Walton Central School bus garage on Delaware Street, led by the school’s marching band to Veterans’ Memorial Plaza in the center of the village. There, Walton Supervisor and retired Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Gregory, flanked by members of Walton’s Explorer Post tasked with flagraising duties, asked parade-goers to remember and honor the

courage and bravery of those who lost their lives in service to their country, making the ultimate sacrifice. From Veterans’ Plaza the parade traveled to Water Street then Bridge Street and stopped at the memorial at the former Walton Armory, now Castle on the Delaware, on Stockton Avenue, with members of Walton’s American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars, standing at See Walton page 4

DELHI - Delaware County 2018 Democrat Man of the Year - David Truscott, issued a call for gun control using the county Democratic Committee annual dinner, held at SUNY Delhi’s Farrell Hall on May 24, as his platform. Prior to accepting the award, Truscott urged the 180-plus attendees not to lose sight of school shootings such as the Parkland, Fla. incident several months ago and another in Texas, recently, as a reason to impart more stringent control over guns. Placing resource officers or arming teachers with baseball bats, will not deter school shootings, Truscott said. “The killing of schoolchildren is the canary in the coal mine,” he said. Of the thousands of people that can be expected to be killed with guns in 2018, several hundred of them will be children, Truscott continued. The country, he said, “Is awash in guns.” There are 300 million guns in the country, he continued, so it should not be a surprise that some of those guns will be used in murders. The tide must be changed, he said. “The direction (of gun control) now is not sane.” Truscott devised a three-part plan to reduce the number of guns in the country by suggesting that guns with a barrel length of less than 24” be banned. The barrel size limitation, he said, would reduce the See Dem of the Year page 6
