Delaware County 911 Call Center, One Year Later By Rosie Cunningham DELHI - Last year, the Delaware County Department of Emergency Services and Delaware County Sheriff’s Office assumed joint supervision of county emergency dispatchers, following approval by the Delaware County Board of Supervisors, who approved a memorandum of understanding. According to Delaware County Emergency Services Director Steve Hood last October, the agreement for joint supervision would allow for a reduction of liability and increased clarity and accountability for the county’s dispatchers, who control all of the 911 calls for the county, as well as the non emergency calls to the sheriff’s office. Since the inception of the plan, Hood said more than 100,000 calls have been handled

since last October. “Our average answer time is three seconds,” he said. In initiating the service, the memorandum of understanding was one of the final details, as control of the 911 dispatch center returned to the county taking up residence at the public safety building on Phoebe Lane in Delhi. Hood explained that 911 calls in Delaware County had been routed through the New York State Police 911 center in Sidney since 1999 free of charge, though the Department of Emergency Services had been working on bringing it back to the county since 2007. Though Hood indicated that the agreement with the state police worked very well for a long time, the state agency began consolidating in 2015 and needed the space that the 911 center occupied in the Troop C See 911 Calls page 5
