Esh-MWH AMP6 Annual - Year Two T

he Esh-MWH AMP6 Annual – Year Two aims to highlight the efforts and achievements of the team, during our second year of operation. The Joint Venture between Esh Construction and MWH, now part of Stantec was formed in 2015, to deliver Northumbrian Water’s Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Framework.

During the second year of AMP6, we’ve continued to embed Northumbrian Water’s key vision and values into our operations, continuously demonstrating that we’re Customer Focused, Results Driven, Ethical, Creative and working together as One Team.

Our success during Year Two was highlighted at Northumbrian Water’s Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Awards 2017. EshMWH Joint Venture was Highly Commended for Overall Supplier of the Year, as well as receiving seven individual awards, which reflects the hard work and dedication of the whole team.

We’ve also had the pleasure of co-locating at Spectrum 5, Seaham with Northumbrian Water and our Framework Partners.

The central hub has allowed the Framework Partnerships team to collaboratively work together under one roof, which has ultimately strengthened our working relationships and enabled us to share best practice across the Framework.

The co-location has enabled us to launch the Run2 Academy, building on the Shared Summer Placement model which we piloted alongside Northumbrian Water and Turner & Townsend in 2015. Now three years on, the Shared Summer Placement has grown into the Run2 Academy and all Framework partners are working together to provide fantastic opportunities to young people in the North East.

This year, we’ve focused on leaving a legacy in the communities in which we work. We’ve recognised the importance of aligned legacy projects and have sought buy in from site teams. A notable legacy project, which was linked to one of our schemes at Weyhill, North Shields, involved seven volunteers from Esh-MWH working together with Meadow Well Connected – a community hub serving the two highest areas of deprivation in North Tyneside. The success of this project has further encouraged site-teams to proactively engage with the local community.

The Wapping Burn, Peterlee site-team organised another notable legacy project for Year Two which involved engaging with Pinnacle Training North East – who work with teenagers (aged 13-16) who have additional behavioral and/or academic needs. We recognise the benefits to all stakeholders involved in these projects and aim to develop them throughout Year Three.

During the first year of AMP6, Esh-MWH formed a partnership with WaterAid to support the delivery of clean water and safe toilets to Madagascar. Over the last two years, we’ve engaged with our staff and used WaterAid as a team building tool to strengthen the Joint Venture partnership. During Year Two we’ve exceed our initial £2,500 target, raising £2,814.23 for the Construction of a latrine block in Madagascar.

Going forward we will continue to work together as OneTeam with Northumbrian Water and Partners, sharing best practice and collaboration across the Framework.

e acknowledge employees for adhering to safe practices and we use this as a powerful form of positive reinforcement. This year, two Site Managers working for Esh-MWH were recognised at Esh Group’s internal Health & Safety Awards 2017.

John received a ‘Gold Award’ at the internal Esh Group Health & Safety Awards 2017 “John Cartwright has worked at Esh Group for many years, undertaking numerous different roles.

In his current role as Site Manager for Esh-MWH, he’s ensured that customers are at the heart of every project delivered. Carrying out his work with consistency and diligence, he’s expressed the importance of Health & Safety to everyone who’s worked on his site.

Recently he’s worked on the Killingworth scheme where he’s projected a professional image to everyone he’s interacted with. This included a local school, as well as the Calvert Trust and other groups who he’s embraced involvement with.“

Simon received a ‘Special Recognition Award’ at the internal Esh Group Health & Safety Awards 2017 “Simon Bright joined the team just before we formed the Esh-MWH Joint Venture. He’s fully embraced our ethos and culture, especially throughout his recent project at Weyhill, North Shields. He went above and beyond to engage with Meadow Well Connected, a local community centre which helps some of the most vulnerable and deprived people in North Tyneside.

He also initiated our first Legacy project at Meadow Well Connected which helped raise money and awareness of the Seeds of Change programme, a community project which helps adults and young people with additional needs.“

Automated Reader Helps Cut Utilities Costs For Esh Group Northumbrian Water is working with one of the North East’s best known companies to help cut utility bills after a trial identified savings of more than £10,000 a year on water alone.

E

sh Group will install Northumbrian Water’s Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system, developed using market-leading technology, into five main areas of its head office site, near Durham.

AMR gives organisations information to allow better control over their utility spending. Using wireless technology, a small, compact data logger installed at the utility meter allows remote communication with a secure online portal in real time.

The system helps to identify efficiencies, both during and outside of normal operating hours. The trial of the system was carried out at the company’s Esh House head office, focussing only on water, and has already identified enough savings to cover the full installation cost for five years.

The company has chosen to have AMR installed on the water, gas and electricity meters at Esh House, along with four of their other offices within its Bowburn headquarters. As well as the traditional utilities, it will help to assess the company’s use of solar panels.

By identifying irregularities in the utilities usage, the system will identify avenues for exploring opportunities to reduce waste.

Simon Park, Esh Group’s Energy and Environmental Advisor, said: “Northumbrian Water’s AMR system has already identified two leaks in our water system that equate to a combined loss of just over £10,000 a year, so it has paid for itself for five years even before it has been fully installed. By applying AMR to water, gas and electricity, there is a real potential for us to save even more on our utilities bills and change behaviours in a way that is good for the environment, as well as our finances.”

Andrew Sinclair, Business Development Manager at Northumbrian Water Group’s Total Water Solutions division, said: “It is great that we are able to support businesses in this way. AMR is a great opportunity to do that, helping companies to identify ways to reduce their bills and reducing the unnecessary use of water and other utilities.”

sh Construction has developed a longterm sustainability programme called ‘Summit 2026’ which aims to tackle environmental impact by covering five key issues relevant to our operations:

Culture Culture is made up of elements including commitment, competence, communication and control, and we have several initiatives designed to help us embed a strong culture:  All Site Managers & Engineers from Esh-MWH have committed to completing the CITB ‘Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme’ (SEATS) course.  We ensure that any important information is circulated to ALL staff working on the Esh-MWH Joint Venture. This includes information such as ‘Sustainability on Site’, which is discussed at the monthly Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) meetings.  We also invite guest speakers to attend HSEQ meetings to present best practice to the site teams. In 2017 our teams heard from PBA Ecology and Green Rhino pollution prevention specialists.

Carbon Emissions Esh Construction’s carbon emissions are its most significant environmental impact and to help us reduce our carbon emissions we have:  We’ve developed an online carbon management training course for our apprentices and supply chain - the Esh Carbon Coach, which provides the next generation of construction workers the knowledge and skills to understand and overcome the key issues arising from climate change. This is available to ALL employees working on the Esh-MWH Joint Venture.  Invested in the Northumbrian Water ‘Pipeline Solutions’ real-time gas, electricity and water monitoring system for the Esh Head Office.

Waste Management The construction industry produces nearly 60% of all UK waste. At Esh Construction we’ve taken matters into our own hands, by opening a facility to re-process inert materials from construction sites, at Tursdale, County Durham. In 2016, Tursdale re-processed 75,389 tonnes of inert material, which was re-used throughout the North East, which includes many Esh-MWH sites.

Health, Safety & Environment Environmental Protection Many of our activities take place in environmentally sensitive areas and with the fines for pollution incidents increasing, we need to make sure we reduce our exposure to risk.

To make sure our activities protect the environment we:  Involve specialist ecologists on sensitive schemes.  Reported environmental near misses, to learn from our mistakes.  Invested in spill kit/ spill response training for our staff.

Supply Chain Although many of the environmental impacts in our supply chain are beyond our direct control, the we aim to influence our partners to help us both reduce our impact on the environment.

To help reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain we:  Hold regular Supplier Relationship Management meetings with top suppliers.  Brought the supply of recycled aggregate materials ‘in-house’ through our facility in County Durham.  Influence our clients to use more sustainable materials.  Signed up to a commitment to eradicate modern slavery from our supply chain.

Highly Commended at the GEM Awards 2017

T

he 30-inch South Derwent Trunk Main that crosses the River Wear had become exposed following river bank erosion after heavy rainfall. There were concerns that further rainfall and flooding would continue to erode the ground and put pressure on the scour pipework and thrust blocks, resulting in major failure of the Trunk Main.

Esh-MWH was appointed to undertake the emergency repairs and the solution involved reshaping the river to redirect the flow, as well as the construction of a rock armour wall to form a new river embankment to protect against further erosion.

Thomas Brown, Land Agent said: “Throughout this project during our regular site visits we have always been impressed with quality of the work being undertaken along with the tidiness of the site and general professional workmanlike conduct of the staff.

Ian has been accommodating throughout this process and generous with his time being always willing to explain honestly and openly where matters were at.

We are very pleased to have had such a careful and considerate contractor on site during this project.

In light of the scale, associated physical and environmental challenges it is remarkable that the property has been returned in such high order.”

The scheme involved:  Construction of a reinforced concrete slab over the Brancepeth Beck.  Installation of a 320m stone access road.  Construction of a concrete protection slab over the 30-inch water main.  Installation of temporary cofferdam using 700 no.1 tonne sand and gravel bags.  Importing and installation of rock armour protection.  Importing and placing of backfill behind the rock armour.

Pre-Scheme We liaised closely with:  Black House Farm - to ensure that they had access at all times and our deliveries didn’t conflict with their activities.  Northern Power Grid - to obtain approval to go underneath their overhead lines.  We also liaised regularly with the Land Agent for the Brancepeth Estate and had frequent visits from various Environment Agency departments.

Health, Safety & Environment Environment Agency Permits

W

e obtained temporary and permanent works permits from the Environment Agency, which allowed us to physically enter the river which contained Salmon & Trout – usually access isn’t granted after the 1st September. The permits were granted after we produced an Environmental Control Plan (ECP), which detailed how the main environmental constraints facing the project would be overcome – including a Silt Management Plan. To aid the implementation of the ECP, we used a geomorphologist and

Geomorphologist e commissioned a specialist geomorphologist contracted by PBA Ecology, Professor Malcolm Newsham, who is a leading expert in his field. A Geomorphologist looks at the impact of works on the flow of the river, assessing the impact of the scheme on the river further down stream, and Professor Newsham carried out specialist surveys of the gravel and river beds, and will help us to monitor the river bed over the next five years.

Electrofishing

A

s the works caused the flow of the River Wear to be diverted, this resulted in the creation of temporary ponds, which needed to be pumped out. To reduce the impact on the fish in the temporary ponds, a fish rescue was carried out using an electrofishing technique, which stuns the fish allowing them to be safely netted.

Protected Species

W

e used netting works to prevent Sand Martins nesting in the working area prior to works commencing. We also carried out newt surveys, as well as badger surveys, prior to works commencing.

The aquatic clerk of works was tasked with completing water samples three times daily to check the turbidity of the river. All method statements, programme and risk assessments had to be supplied to the Environment Agency prior to work commencing to ensure we had covered all aspects of the scheme.

During Works

Biodegradable Oils Our large plant working in the river used biodegradable oils to minimise risk to the aquatic environment and silt booms were strung across the river to capture any sediment created by our works.

Recycled Materials  We used recycled materials to create an access road to the river bank across agricultural land and a concrete slab laid over Brancepeth Beck. The access track was a total of 320m long and minimised the impact to the agricultural land.  A cofferdam was designed to allow us to use materials located at the site, therefore reducing costs of importing materials. We utilised recycled materials from our Tursdale Depot which sorts and recycles materials from our sites and provides us with a certified resource of recycled materials. As the works were so close to the river this also reduced the risk of contaminants entering the watercourse.  We sourced and located rocks from a local quarry in order to minimise carbon footprint.

Growing our Customer Service Team Over the last year, our Customer Service team has tripled in size!

uring the second year of AMP6, our Customer Service Manager Christine Taylor has embedded NWG’s Customer Focused approach into ALL front-line, operational staff, as well as growing her own Customer Service team.

Over the last year, we’ve welcomed both Tony Birkett, Customer Service Advisor and Ann Scott, Customer Service Administrator to the team.

Our Customer Service Team often meet with operational staff to continuously drive improvements, creating a Customer Focused culture and buy in from site teams who’ve historically concentrated on operational duties and tasks.

Weyhill Avenue North Shields, Tyne & Wear Synopsis of works:

E

sh-MWH was appointed by Northumbrian Water to further improve the sewer network and reduce the risk of flooding to properties on Weyhill Avenue, North Shields. Works involved the installation of new sewers along Waterville Road, Weyhill Avenue, Lambourn Avenue, Avon Avenue and Meadow Well Way.

Contract Period: May 2016 – April 2017

Early Engagement

E

sh-MWH, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, engaged with Meadow Well Connected (MWC) prior to works commencing on site to provide alternative construction routes and methods.

Early engagement helped us to understand MWC’s needs, as well as understanding the impact that our works would have on their clients.

Working together, we chose the best solution for MWC, which involved relocating a proposed sewer route away from the grounds. We directional drilled the sewer route adjacent to the main entrance, which allowed MWC to keep

their car park open and access as clear as possible.

We also amended the location of the site compound to keep the footpath open between MWC and the adjacent Metro Station.

Meadow Well Connected Our site compound was located next door to Meadow Well Connected (MWC) - a community hub serving the two highest areas of deprivation in North Tyneside where 63% of households experience deprivation.

Customers and The Community

Esh-MWH Volunteer at Meadow Well Connected On Thursday 3rd November 2016, seven employees from Esh-MWH volunteered their time to work with clients on the Seeds of Change programme at MWC. Simon Bright, Francesca Madden, Paul Joyce, Luke Roberts, Isabelle Hewitt, Ryan Bennett & Tony Birkett completed a variety of tasks including planting onions, making hanging baskets, cleaning out the guinea pigs and making Christmas wreaths.

Value for Money Donating time, instead of money, strengthened our existing relationship with MWC. We also donated gardening gloves and a bird box for the sensory garden – acquired from a woodwork programme at Durham Prison which aims to teach inmates new skills. After the volunteering project, MCW was encouraged to apply for funding through Esh Group’s Esh Communities programme - which awards grants of up to £1,000 to community groups and charitable organisations. MWC was successful and received a £1,000 grant on the 23rd May 2017.

Creating a Lasting Legacy  Esh Communities: Funding received has been put towards a state of the art irrigation system for the fruit and vegetables grown in the Poly Tunnels.

This will leave a lasting legacy of water consumption.  Re-Profiling the Waste Land: Esh-MWH re-profiled the area of land where the site compound was situated – which was formerly waste land. We agreed to re-profile the ground reinstatement works and seed with a wildflower mix which will increase the yields from the beehives in the community garden - which are used to educate others in the art of sustainable beekeeping.

Building a Relationship Simon Bright, Site Agent at Esh-MWH built a strong relationship with staff members and clients at MWC as the site compound was adjacent to their five-acre community garden.

Simon engaged with Meadow Well Connected (MWC) through:  Regular Communication with staff – Simon visited (MWC) on a regular basis to keep staff updated on the progress of the works & answer any questions  Regular Communication with clients – many clients at (MWC) have additional needs. Simon had daily contact with clients to ensure safe passage alongside works, as well as undertaking site visits to the site compound  Donating materials – Simon donated spare materials from the site compound to help improve the five-acre community garden at (MWC)  Using their Facilities – to financially support (MWC), Simon hired their meeting rooms to host site meetings on a monthly basis  Positive Relationship: Our staff built positive and personal relationships with individuals from MWC which strengthened the reputation of Esh-MWH working in partnership with Northumbrian Water in the North Tyneside area.

 School Engagement: We engaged with local schools and encouraged future generations to consider studying STEM subjects:  Site Safety Competition delivered to pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School to reinforce the importance of Health & Safety. The winners received a site visit on 04/07/16 and their posters were displayed around the site compound  STEM Kit – 59 pupils from Collingwood Primary School received our STEM Water kit for a three week period.

Whitburn Spills Sunderland & South Tyneside Synopsis of works:

E

sh-MWH, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, was appointed as Framework contractor on Whitburn Spills, a 7.5million project which will improve the performance and resilience of the sewer network in the North Sunderland and South Tyneside area in Sunderland. Around 9,000 properties, including homes and businesses, were affected by our works.

School Engagement  St Benet’s RC Primary School, Fulwell – we worked closely with the school to install SuDS features such as rainwater planters, water butts and a rain garden, as well as creating new habitats for newts.  Site Visits – provided to 6 students from Redby Primary School.  Site Safety Competition – a site safety competition was undertaken at Redby Primary school. The winning Health & Safety posters were displayed around the site compound.  STEM Water Kit – we placed our STEM water kit into St Benet’s Primary School and Redby Primary School for three weeks. The STEM Water Kit educated 85 children about STEM subjects.

W

e organised a special site visit for James Dyer, a seven-year-old boy from Sunderland who suffers from Autism which means his hearing is extremely sensitive.

James’ mother contacted us via the Community Portal and the customer team, who wanted to help, organised a fun and interactive site visit for James.

“My son James has autism, and sensory issues with sound, which means that some machinery gives him a fright and he’s unable to walk to school. I was so touched that such a big company would take the time out to help one little boy. The site team helped James immensely and he was made to feel special, like a guest of honor. Esh-MWH is a shining example of a company engaging with and helping the local community. I’m still in awe from the outcome of my initial email – we can’t thank them enough! ” James’ mother Sharon Dyer

Customer Centre To drive continuous improvements, we established a dedicated Customer Centre on-site at Roker Park, Whitburn Spills. The Customer Centre was open Monday – Friday, 8.30am – 4.30pm for customers to visit and ask any questions they had about the project.

Esh Communities As part of our work to create a SuDS basin in Roker Park we worked closely with environmental charity CEED. Customers and The Community Wapping Burn Legacy Project

T

he site-team at Wapping Burn, Peterlee organised a special legacy project for Pinnacle Training North East - who work with teenagers (aged 13-16) who have additional behavioural and/or academic needs. They aim to up-skill students, providing them with hands-on training which includes trades such as bricklaying and plastering.

The students visited the Wapping Burn Rising Main Replacement project, as well as the NWG Pumping Station.

Afterwards, the Wapping Burn site-team delivered inspiring presentations to provide a realistic idea of what can be achieved through hard work and determination. Mark from Pinnacle Training explained that the students are reluctant to set their goals high, as they don’t want to set themselves up to fail. Hearing realistic life-stories from the Wapping Burn site-team showed them that you don’t have to be an A* student to become a success!

Ian Davison, Project Manager for Northumbrian Water said: “This legacy project was a fantastic way to engage with the local community and inspire the future generations. Everyone involved found the project rewarding after speaking to the students and understanding their aspirations in life. We’re hoping that the students were ‘inspired’ and are now more aware of the opportunities available to them in the Construction industry.”

Whitburn Spill Reduction

‘Living Water, Loving Sunderland’: improving the sewer network in the Roker, Seaburn, Fulwell and St Peter’s areas of Sunderland

N

orthumbrian Water is required to provide investment to reduce spills at Whitburn and St Peter’s, Sunderland in order to comply with the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) by December 2017. Sunderland (north) is an urban catchment of predominantly residential properties and is home to Sunderland’s Blue Flag award winning beaches at Seaburn and Roker. The catchment is substantially combined and the beaches are presently protected by a storm interceptor tunnel which collects overflows from the combined sewer network during rainfall events.

Feasibility study

E

sh-MWH undertook a feasibility study in 2015 to identify options to achieve a spill frequency of 20 spills per annum at Whitburn and St Peter’s.

The preferred option reduces discharges from the storm interceptor by optimising the operation of existing assets, providing storage near key pumping stations and reducing the amount of surface water that enters the sewer network using surface water separation and SuDS. Design & construction was by Esh-MWH, Northumbrian Water’s framework delivery partner, under an NEC option C contract.

Approach The project team developed a thorough understanding of the network and operation of assets through careful review of measured data, discussions with operatives and interrogation of a verified hydraulic model.

An existing Infoworks ICM model was updated with information obtained from site surveys undertaken as part of this study. A short term flow survey was carried out and used to verify the model around the location of the key assets and at locations where surface water was to be removed and therefore confirm representation of the sewer system and its response to rainfall. Predicted operation of the tunnel was checked against historical telemetry records and radar rainfall. Annual spill frequency was

Technical assessed using 10 year Stormpac time series rainfall run as a continuous simulation to represent the impacts of filling and emptying of the storm interceptor.

The storm interceptor requires an additional 13,500m3 of storage and St Peter’s requires 3,000m3 of storage and associated infrastructure to achieve a spill frequency of 20 spills per annum. Large storage volumes present a problem for construction and operation; for example, having longer retention times, increased pumping and increased treatment costs. The approach taken by the project team to identify interventions was to:  Maximise potential of existing assets.  Take out surface water load on the combined sewer network.

M

uch of the catchment consists of dense housing served by fully combined sewers with no viable watercourse to divert surface water into. While full catchment separation was not considered viable, a portion of the roof and road area was intercepted and attenuated in available green space and SuDS measures before return to the combined sewer network.

Measures such as bioretention swales make use of available green space to store water temporarily on the surface and encourage infiltration through the vegetation and into underlying soils.

The feasibility study identified that there were opportunities to install smaller storage volumes further up in the catchment at the 3 main pumping stations, Seaburn, Roker and St Peter’s. Additionally, the study showed the storm tunnel does not completely fill during the spill events of concern and there is opportunity to install works to mobilise storage in the upper parts of the storm tunnel.

The catchment offered a number of opportunities for disconnecting surface water sewers and highway drainage from the combined sewer network, using conventional drainage or swales to redirect flow to a watercourse.

A

new 3,000m3 combined storage tank upstream of Seaburn pumping station reduces storm discharges to the interceptor tunnel. The tank has a gravity return and an Alpheus flow limiter controls pass forward flow to the pumping station.

A new surface water sewer and swale facilitates the removal of Boldon Flats Wetland, which drains into the combined sewer upstream of Seaburn Pumping Station. Regrading the outlet channel improves access to the outlet screen and planting a new reed bed provides water quality benefits.

Removal of Boldon Flats Wetland and the surrounding highway drainage and disconnection of surface water from a supermarket and surrounding development at Seaburn (which currently drains directly to the storm tunnel) all reduce storage volume requirements. The works comprised:

R

oker Public Park, two schools and several public open spaces are benefitting from water features, planting and landscaping in return for space to store water. There is no viable watercourse in the dense residential area to divert surface water into and the solution uses surface water attenuation in SuDS features.

These works reduce flow to the interceptor without the requirement for conventional storage.

New surface water sewers carry surface water from local highway and roof drainage into the SuDS. Rainwater planters within schools provide amenity benefit and an educational opportunity for involving school children. Planters contain a planted soil mix and underdrain filter system. Lined timber boxes are positioned close to building roofs and intercept rainwater down pipes. They are designed to store a 1 in 1 month rainfall event and overflow back to the existing drainage system.

A range of source control measures within schools, highway verge and near other large buildings provide the remaining attenuation. Rain gardens provide storage within permeable soils and surface depressions for capturing runoff from frequent rainfall events. Runoff from larger rainfall events overflows back to the combined sewer network. Suitable planting helps create attractive landscape features and increases biodiversity value.

Rain gardens offer flexibility in shape and size. Roadside rain gardens intercept flow upstream of road gullies and attenuate in a permeable area replacing hard surfaced traffic calming measures. Runoff from larger rainfall events bypasses the rain garden and runs to the original gully.

Self emptying water butts which ensure capacity is available during a rainfall event offer cheap solutions where space is limited. Works comprised:  1,800m of surface water sewer DN225-600 intercepting 100 gullies.  Construction of 3 (No.) bioretention areas providing 1,300m3 attenuation.  Construction of planters, rain gardens and roadside rain gardens intercepting 0.7ha of impermeable (road and roof) area.

Technical St Peter’s

A

new 1,700m3 storage tank on the overflow from St Peter’s CSO intercepts spills to the estuary.

The tank returns flows to an existing pumping station on the quay. An actuated penstock operating off a level monitor controls draindown. The penstock is serviced from the existing pumping station power and telecoms.

Surface water disconnection from the existing CSO spill reduces storage volume requirements. Works comprised:  Precast storage tank constructed in an interlocking sheet piled cofferdam with concrete base plug located on the Wear estuary quayside.  Interconnecting pipework.  Mechanical and electrical installation for the actuated penstock.

The precast tank was designed and supplied by Carlow Concrete. Piling was by McGrattan Piling. Base plug design was carried out by Alan Auld. Pipejacking was undertaken

by F & B Trenchless Solutions (IRE) Ltd and M&E works were undertaken by Retroflo.

Construction Construction of the project presented the team with a number of third party, environmental and customer

challenges to overcome. The works were located at multiple sites across the catchment and within different land ownership. Successful implementation of the solution was driven by close working relationships with South Tyneside Council, Sunderland City Council, local schools, Sunderland University and other landowners.

Site setup consisted a central office and remote satellite compounds with welfare facilities. Works were planned to minimise disruption to residents and key events including the Sunderland Illuminations, Sunderland Airshow and Sunderland 10k run. Works included pipelaying in highway within dense terraced streets and main thoroughfares to schools and shopping areas. Careful coordination of traffic management and rolling road closures minimised disruption to customers.

Soils excavated from reclaimed land on the St Peter’s quayside were subject to a Materials Management Plan to reduce the potential pollution and promote the recovery and re-use of materials. Suitable soils were reused to landscape a brownfield site at St Peter’s waterfront providing a more attractive setting. Contaminated soils were disposed off site.

Works to a school pond within a central courtyard required consideration of its inhabitants. Materials and waste were hand barrowed through the school building during a school

Technical term holiday. Newts (no great crested newts found) were monitored and a hibernaculum (newt hotel) provided. A rain garden improved circulation of water within the pond and provided a newt habitat.

The project has significant environmental constraints, including the issue of the Environment Agency granting a licence for the works in the River Wear. We organised a celebration event to celebrate the achievements of our first year operating as Esh-MWH!

or two months between January and March 2017, Graham Moralee was seconded to Esh-MWH’s office in Pune, India. Graham has been working with the growing team of Wastewater Networks Modellers that are currently working on Northumbrian Water, Runway 2 projects. Currently, modellers from both Pune and Newcastle offices are collaboratively working together as ONE-TEAM on the Dual Manholes programme, Community Action Plans and the Tyneside Strategic Studies.

D

uring the two months, Graham and the team participated in various training and awareness sessions including the Northumbrian Water wastewater modelling specifications, the Runway 2 Process Flow-Chart and the UK Water Industry AMP Cycles. The team also held project kick-off meetings for some of the larger studies that are ongoing.

Between 2011 and 2014, Graham spent two and a half years working at the same office in Pune, India on the Thames Water modelling framework. It’s no surprise that Graham has built up a strong connection with the office over recent years.

As the team in Pune, India work five and a half hours ahead, one of the great benefits is that we’re able to deliver projects efficiently which have tight deadlines. If a task is requested at the end of a working day (UK), we’re able to have the task completed by the start of the next.

They’ve adopted a proactive, holistic and integrated approach to improving their employees physical and psychological health and resilience by creating bespoke Wellbeing Campaigns. MWH has rolled out a series of four, two week campaigns over the last year that aims to improve the physical and mental wellbeing of employees.

The Wellbeing Campaign aims to address the following key objectives:  Improve the physical and mental wellbeing of employees.

ver the last year we’ve aimed to mirror these campaigns and successfully promoted them across the Esh-MWH Joint Venture.

Campaigns include:

Be Active  MWH’s Campaign - 30 Day Fitness Pledge, Skipathon, Bespoke Lunch & Learns & Local Activities organised on an office by office basis.  Esh-MWH’s Campaign Be Active Campaign focused on the small changes that employees can make to their lifestyle to become fitter and healthier. Rather than setting a specific challenge, staff were encouraged to participate in the ‘I Pledge Campaign’ – which simply involved making a pledge to do something (in the next 30 days) to become fitter or healthier.

 Remove the stigma associated with mental health.  Enable employees to give back to their local communities.  Improve employee engagement.

One Team Be Healthy  MWH’s Campaign - Health Checks available for ALL employees, Smoothie Day & Fitness Bakes, Healthy Recipes & Videos circulated, healthy lunch bags, snacks and British Heart Foundation booklet provided to all employees.  Esh-MWH’s Campaign – Free fruit was available for all employees during the two-week campaign. 43 employees were provided with FREE health check MOT’s to encourage healthy eating in the workplace.

Craig Stephenson, Project Manager from Esh-MWH is a certified health professional and personal trainer. Using a body stat machine, Craig carried out all health check MOT’s which included a private discussion for each individual and a copy of the results to take away.

Be Inspired  MWH’s Campaign – Lunchtime masterclasses on floristry, sewing, photography and boat building, Daily Role models case studies circulated, as well as information highlighting online learning courses.  Esh-MWH’s Campaign – inspiring individuals working for Esh-MWH were interviewed and a case study was put together to showcase their talents, and inspire others!

Be Mindful  MWH’s Campaign – Stands in every office with leaflets and information from Time to Change, Mind and Valium, Awareness Traning in Mental Health, Free Yoga classes in all offices, Lunchtime stress busting workshops, signed up to the Time to Change pledge.  Esh-MWH’s Campaign - to address mental wellbeing in the workplace we circulated information on how to improve your mental wellbeing from charity MIND.

ur employees have told us that the Esh-MWH Wellbeing Campaigns have helped them to make positive lifestyle changes. The morale around the offices has improved with the wellbeing campaigns providing a common platform for employees from different parts of the business to talk to each other and join in with organised activities.

We will continue to work together as ONE TEAM with Northumbrian Water and Runway 2 Framework partners, embedding each other’s core values into our operations and sharing best practice. Together, we’ve created an environment of collaboration, continuous improvement and behavior that should make us proud and excited for the years ahead.

Esh-MWH working in partnership with WaterAid D

uring the second year of AMP6, we formed a partnership with WaterAid to engage our staff, ultimately strengthening the Joint Venture partnership.

We achieved the following aims during the second year of AMP6: Fundraise We aimed to raise £2,500 which will go towards the construction of a latrine block in Madagascar. We exceeded this target and raised a grand total of £2,814.23.

ALL Businesses within the Run2 Academy are working towards a collaborative set of Community Targets.

Shared Summer Placement Model he (SSP) aims to offer numerous students, currently working towards a degree in Engineering or the Built Environment sector, the unique opportunity to undertake a 12-week summer placement with Northumbrian Water and their key suppliers. Students will gain an understanding on how each company’s values drives business performance.

Students will be paid the living wage and receive invaluable skills and experience working on real life Construction projects.

The (SSP) placements are tailored to each individual student’s needs.  Client - Northumbrian Water (4 Weeks) – students will spend four weeks working with Northumbrian Water to understand the role of the Asset Delivery Project Manager or Project Engineer. Students will be able to see how they manage and engage throughout the process, engaging their supply partners throughout.  Commercial Management or Design Element (4 Weeks) – students will learn how a scheme is taken from the investigation stage to defining the deliverable option, following the process to full design, as well as understanding software and modelling packages and how the design and construction team integrate to drive down costs.  Contractor – Construction Element (4-Weeks) – Taking the experience from the design element of the D&C contractor and utilising this on a water or wastewater construction site, as well as on-site construction experience and other departments associated with the build process.

Current Issues in the Water Industry:  Skills Shortage  Aging Workforce  Lack of trained new entrants The (SSP) was created to:  Promote the Water Industry to undergraduate students who are currently working towards a degree in Engineering or the Built Environment sector  Provide students with a unique opportunity to gain an overview and understanding on how Capital Infrastructure projects are delivered from conception to completion  Allow students to contextualize their academic studies as well as looking at the project from numerous different perspectives  Develop our workforce of the future by attracting talented undergraduate students into our businesses

Development of the Shared Summer Placement O

ver the last year we’ve achieved ALL aims and objectives in regards to the Shared Summer Placement (SSP).

Aims To develop existing relationships, as well as building new relationships with local Universities:  Attended the ACCESS event at Newcastle University  Delivered presentations at both Northumbria University & Newcastle University  The SSP was promoted by Sunderland University & Durham University  We also indirectly attracted applicants from other universities such as Teesside, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Bradford & Derby Develop relationships with professional bodies:

 The SSP is fully accredited by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) & the Association for Project Management (APM)

This year, we created a promotional Media Pack which included:

 Both professional bodies fully supported and promoted the programme

 Promotional Booklet (for students) – detailing the programme, learning outcomes, case studies and application tips  Promotional Advert - an A4 poster was used by Educational Establishments, Professional Bodies & Businesses to promote the SSP  Promotional Video – we produced a promotional video with a previous SSP student  Social Media Campaign – we created ‘suggested content’ and asked all stakeholders to help promote the campaign Increase the number of applicants: Our promotional materials & stakeholder engagement resulted in:  

64 students applying for the Shared Summer Placement 2017.

In total, 56 students applied correctly and provided a Covering Letter & CV.

 Out of the 56 students who applied correctly, we interviewed 13 undergraduate students.  Out of the 13 interviewed, the Run2 Academy offered 7 undergraduates students positions on the Shared Summer Placement.

The programme encouraged collaborative working, which enabled students to gain a broad understanding of the Water Industry. Now three years on, the Shared Summer Placement has developed and grown into the Run2 Academy.

Building on the model of the Shared Summer Placement, Northumbrian Water and Framework Partners are collaboratively working together to provide fantastic opportunities to young people in Northern England.
