Introduction

Esh-Stantec AMP6 Annual Year Three he Esh-Stantec AMP6 Annual – Year Three aims to highlight the efforts and achievements of the team, during our third year of operation. The Joint Venture between Esh Construction and Stantec (previously MWH Global) was formed in 2015, to deliver Northumbrian Water’s Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Framework.

MWH Global was acquired by Stantec in May 2016, however the structure of the UK business remained unchanged – as well as the UK leadership team and staff.

Esh-Stantec has a long-term approach to leaving a positive legacy, which involves building strong relationships with our clients, as well as key stakeholders in the local community During year three, we began the process of an official rebrand which has seen the Esh-MWH Joint Venture officially rebranded to Esh-Stantec. Although this has been a slow process, we’ve ensured that any changes have been implemented as smoothly as possible.

Esh Construction is one of the leading construction companies in the North East of England. In 2018, they received the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for their outstanding work in supporting communities. Over the years, they’ve demonstrated their commitment to helping young people develop employability skills through a wide range of educational programmes.

Communities are fundamental. Whether around the corner or across the globe, they provide a foundation, a sense of place and of belonging. That’s why at Stantec, they always design with community in mind. AMP6 has demonstrated that together, we are better.

Esh-Stantec has a long-term approach to leaving a positive legacy, which involves building strong relationships with our clients, as well as key stakeholders in the local community. Corporate CSR programmes - such as Esh Group’s Building My Skills, Get into STEM Water Kit & Stantec in the Community - have been utilised by EshStantec’s delivery teams and embedded into our operations to strengthen relationships with the local community.

After realising the importance of bespoke community engagement, we’ve continued to develop and improve our legacy projects and throughout year three, we’ve engaged with a wide range of stakeholders including the North East Fire Service, Education Establishments and the Riverside Parkrun.

Our successes throughout year three were highlighted at Northumbrian Water’s Going The Extra Mile (GEM) Awards 2018. Esh-Stantec received three awards, as well as an additional five from industry leading professional bodies such as Constructing Excellence North East, RICS and ICE North East.

We’ve continued to collaborate with Northumbrian Water and Partners, sharing best practice across the Framework.

We were honoured to share our social value strategy at this year’s Northumbrian Water Supplier Conference, which focused on Legacy. We will continue to work together as one team with Northumbrian Water, embedding their core values into our operations throughout AMP6 and beyond.

The Murton Flooding Scheme won the Customer Focused award at this year’s prestigious Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Awards.

Alum Waters Site Visit!

The customer team organised a site visit for 25 pupils from New Brancepeth (primary school), to visit our Alum Waters site. The pupils received a guided tour, as well as a special visit from our mascot, Dudley the Elephant!

NWG’s customer focused approach has continued to be embedded into site operations. Steve Boyd, Project Manager and Adam Saunders, Senior Engineer had a great time helping the customer team with the site visit to Alum Waters.

Customer Engagement Tool Moving to ArcGIS

T

he Customer Engagement Tool (CET) was developed collaboratively between Esh-Stantec and Northumbrian Water at the beginning of AMP6, to enable project delivery teams to collaboratively manage, measure and improve customer relationships.

The CET aims to meet customer needs, as well as minimising the impact of our actions throughout the project lifecycle.

The CET provides three key outcomes: 1.

Facilitates coordination of the various project stakeholders, setting a programme of customer engagement activities aligned to the project delivery process and setting clear responsibilities and deadlines; 2. Provides the project stakeholder management plan and identifies key customer-specific issues within the project area; 3. Enables customer impact assessment using a RAG approach based on a series of impact measures, comparing notional and final solution scores to demonstrate how the design has considered and reduced customer impact, and documenting measures to mitigate residual impact.

The CET uses MS Excel and MapInfo, with information transferred between them to generate the customer impact assessment.

To streamline and enhance the CET, work is ongoing to migrate to ArcGIS.

Benefits of ArcGIS includes:  A wealth of global data, offering opportunities to expand the impact measures feeding the RAG assessment;  Drawing automation and solution testing for efficiency savings;  Mobile device compatibility, which will give site teams’ direct access to the CET and allow on-site data capture for logging customer visits with real-time transfer of information into NWG customer systems.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise Esh-Stantec recognised for Promoting Opportunity and Social Mobility

E

veryone at Esh Group is immensely proud to be awarded with The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise; to be recognised by Her Majesty the Queen for our commitment to Promoting Opportunity and Social Mobility (POSM).

 Our clients and framework operators who act as a catalyst for action; we deliver our programmes to ‘add value’ to our commercial operation. Social Value delivery is becoming a key part of the procurement process.

The Queen’s Award is the highest honour a business can achieve at an organisational level and the Award is nationally and internationally recognised. We are proud to join a select group of North East based businesses (which includes Northumbrian Water Group) whom have received the award. Furthermore Esh Group are one of only two contractors to hold the POSM award nationally.

 Our joint venture partners, suppliers and like-minded business partners who collaborate on our programmes ensuring they are rich, well rounded and applicable to all stakeholders.

Our submission was based on Esh Added Value, social mobility and how our business model, procurement practices and ultimately our clients allow us to deliver innovative programmes such as Building My Skills, Get into STEM, work experience, site visits and run our apprentice programme.

 Our staff, shareholders and executive board who back our added value team to deliver our programmes day in day out, making everything possible.

We are looking forward to the future and have several new programmes in the pipeline.

Riverside Parkrun Legacy Project Chester Le Street

T

his legacy project is linked to the site at Park View, Chester Le Street, which aims to improve the water quality of the River Wear, adjacent to the Riverside Park.

14 volunteers from Esh-Stantec and Northumbrian Water gave up their Saturday morning and volunteered to help organise the weekly Parkrun at Riverside Park. Our volunteers helped 419 runners over the finish line, as well as handing out healthy breakfast bars and water bottles.

“This week, we want to say a huge thank you to Esh-Stantec who have provided us with lots of volunteers.

They’ve also very kindly provided us with some useful equipment to help keep Riverside Parkrun running smoothly. Thanks to Alan Croft and everyone at Esh-Stantec and Northumbrian Water.”

The Day the Gruffalo Came to Deepdale Something big, extremely hairy and truly scary has been spotted at our Deepdale, Barnard Castle Site! No, it’s not one of our Managers – it’s a Gruffalo!

Works Synopsis

N

orthumbrian Water has invested £900,000 in an essential upgrade of the water network in Deepdale, Barnard Castle to help to safeguard water supplies for future generations. Works carried out by Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, involves renewing approximately 160 metres of large diameter water main pipe from the western edge of the Deepdale pedestrian bridge.

ue to works being carried out on the pedestrian aqueduct, pedestrian access was closed.

Esh-Stantec’s Customer Service team had a great idea to open the bridge for one day only!

Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, were pleased to take part and assist Bright Woods Forest School with their ‘Gruffalo Book Walk’ which took place on Saturday 1st September 2018. Christine Taylor, Dave Eden and his wife, Hayley, volunteered to help the School across the viaduct as part of their route to find the Gruffalo.

A special thank you to Dave Eden, who produced his own storyboard pictures which were placed along the Heras fencing surrounding the viaduct.

The Murton Flooding Scheme P

rior to works commencing on site, Esh-Stantec working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, liaised with Durham County Council to create an integrated flood alleviation solution.

A detailed study of the sewer network was undertaken to establish the cause of flooding in the Murton area.

A feasibility study concluded that the flooding was due to hydraulic incapacity in the public combined and surface water sewers. The solution was split into two phases of work:

 Woods Terrace - £1million scheme to upsize and provide 600 m3 of storage, by installing a pre-cast concrete storage tank to the existing sewer network.

Works were undertaken in a small open space, within a densely populated estate adjacent to the town centre.  Stephen’s Road - £2million scheme to upsize the sewerage network using 2.4m and 1.8m pipes and remove surface water from the combined drainage network utilising innovative SUDS solutions.

 Letter Drops: 3,500 customer letters delivered

Works needed to be undertaken in a resident’s back garden, which involved removing a fence.

The residents had two young children who were appointed as our ‘Junior Health & Safety Champions’ throughout the works to ensure that they felt valued. We’re now working with the family to reinstate their garden for future betterment.

Out of 1,600 customers, we received a total of 1 written customer complaint and 1 written customer enquiry:  1 written complaint related to historical issues with Northumbrian Water  1 enquiry about our works, which we resolved through visiting the customer and resolving all issues face to face Customers and the community are at the heart of every project that we deliver. Working together as one team, Northumbrian Water, Esh-Stantec, Turner & Townsend & Wood tailored and changed their methods of working, as well as their project programme, to ensure minimum disruption to customers throughout the duration of the project. Even though the programme was changed, we still met our target completion date.

Example 1: One family, living in close proximity to our works, was an emergency foster care family. They’d recently took on two young children from a very disturbed background and as a result, the children were very nervous. Our programme was changed to ensure that noise was kept to a minimum until the children were more settled.

Example 2: One lady, living in close proximity to our works, was pregnant and suffering from a serious medical condition. Our Customer Service team received a call from a concerned family member, as she had restricted mobility because of the condition. Yet again we changed our programme to ensure that we didn’t undertake any work outside her home until the baby was born.

Quote from resident: “We’re very happy with the way things have gone. We’ve found that Esh-Stantec have been very attentive and kept us well informed of schedules. Everyone is fully aware of the upheaval and the impact that it’s had on the neighbourhood.

Esh-Stantec have been brilliant with the children and they have loved their gifts and writing stories for you.

It will be strange when it’s all finished, after so long in the planning and execution. Any issues that have cropped up have been resolved efficiently, with plenty of communication.”

Forest Lodge The existing network passed above ground and below chicken coups, on the privately-owned ‘Forest Lodge’ where the owners provided allotment space to local residents. We were successful in lowering the level of the new sewers to remove all structures above ground, to provide betterment to the owners property.

We also worked closely with the owner during the construction works to minimise disruption, relocate allotment areas and provide new chicken coups for those which needed to be removed.

Live Emergency Rescue Demonstration helps Esh-Stantec Improve Safety Procedures Mark Robinson, Project Manager for Esh-Stantec said “This was a fantastic opportunity to engage with one of our key stakeholders in the local area to help us maintain a positive safety culture, as well as an opportunity for all involved to discuss the planning and execution of a reallife emergency rescue.”

D

uring the third year of AMP6, we’ve strived for continuous improvements, putting Health and Safety at the forefront of everything we do. We believe that everyone who is affected by our Joint Venture activities has the right to remain safe. This includes all employees, our supply chain partners and the local communities in which we work.

Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, is currently working on a £1.7million project to improve water quality in the Newcastle Area. The project, known as Pipeline Management, involves the installation of Electronically Operated Valves to help control the flow of water through the clean water network.

As part of their approach to continuous Health and Safety improvements, the site-team based at Hollywood Avenue, Longbenton, identified the opportunity to improve their

emergency safety procedures. Improved safety procedures are typically communicated to site operatives through literature and toolbox talks.

After liaising with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, both parties identified a mutually beneficial opportunity to improve their emergency rescue safety procedures.

On the 21st February 2018, the live emergency rescue demonstration was undertaken by Gosforth and Hebburn Fire Stations who are based in the local area. Site operations were placed on hold to allow the live emergency rescue demonstration to be undertaken, with the entire project team and health & safety department in attendance.

Three fire crews, including the specialist rope rescue unit from Hebburn station, carried out a live walk-through rescue demonstration from one of the deep excavations on-site.

Reactive Legacy Projects CUSTOMER FOCUSED To undertake the live emergency rescue demonstration, we engaged with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service who are an important stakeholder in the local community.

Our site operatives, as well as Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, now feel more prepared to deal with a real-life emergency rescue situation. This has enhanced the safety of the local community, our own workforce and stakeholders, as we’ve reviewed and improved our safety procedures.

ETHICAL Our aim is to achieve the highest Health, Safety and Wellbeing standards by implementing effective systems and processes, raising awareness and encouraging behavioural change, with a strong focus on employee engagement. The live emergency rescue demonstration shows that we’re engaging with our employees and stakeholders to continuously improve our Health and Safety procedures.

CREATIVE The live emergency rescue demonstration was an innovative approach to raising awareness and educating our staff. An alternative approach to toolbox talks, this is the first time that a live emergency rescue demonstration has been undertaken on one of our sites.

ONE TEAM We invited the whole project team to the event, along with representatives from Northumbrian Water and Esh Group’s internal Health and Safety team. Lessons learnt were shared with our Framework Partners at Northumbrian Water’s Framework Safety Forum.

RESULTS DRIVEN The live emergency rescue demonstration resulted in the Pipeline Management site-team receiving a prestigious 5/5 construction score from Esh Group’s Health & Safety department. We’ve received positive feedback from the whole project team, including Northumbrian Water and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service. We’ve reviewed and improved our emergency safety procedures and the lessons learnt are as follows:  Improved site logistics and access for emergency service vehicles  Enhancing information and equipment on-site to aid an emergency rescue  Increased awareness of potential hazards linked to emergency rescues  Improved awareness from design partners, in regards to the requirements for temporary works and associated hazards Lessons learnt will be distributed to all project teams and the wider framework.

Brunton First School Pond Redevelopment Legacy through collaboration with the supply chain

Building Relationships

Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, delivered a £2milllion project to upgrade the existing sewer network at West Brunton Farm, Gosforth.

Works were carried out within the agricultural land and open public space to the rear of Wagonway Drive, which involved the replacement of the existing concrete sewer and associated manholes.

We started to build a positive relationship with Brunton First School after our initial visit, however the site-team based at West Brunton Farm wanted to organised a bespoke legacy project, which would benefit the school long term and leave a lasting legacy. We organised a meeting with the Headmistress and identified an opportunity to redevelop their existing pond, which was overgrown and out of use.

Initial STEM Engagement During the project, we engaged with Brunton First School (who were located close to our site compound) and they received our ‘Get into STEM Water Kit’ for a two-week period in July 2017. Our fun and educational kit, actively encourages water themed STEM activities and raises awareness of the different careers available in the water industry.

Legacy Project After a few discussions, we decided that we’d like to redevelop the existing pond and create an outdoor educational area, focusing on ecology. For this project, we called upon the expertise of Northumbrian Water Ecologist, Stuart Pudney, to carry out an initial ecological survey, as well as supporting throughout.

Reactive Legacy Projects Budget Although we wanted to redevelop the pond and leave a lasting legacy, we didn’t have a budget to fund the project.

Therefore, the site team decided to call upon the core supply chain used throughout the West Brunton Farm project. They asked for their support (non-financial) which included kindly donating materials, labor and equipment to deliver the project.

Collaboration with our Supply Chain Collaborating helped us to fulfil our promise to the school, as well as spreading the ethos to our supply chain that ‘customers and the community are at the heart of every project that we deliver.’ The project wouldn’t have been possible without the support and generosity of Deerness Fencing & Landscaping, MJR Groundworks and Construction, MKM Building Supplies, Nixon Hire, W. Marley Agricultural Contractors Ltd, James Burrell Builders Merchants and Tarmac.

Benefits of the project included  Customer Focused - the project helped us, as well as our supply chain, to engage with the local community at West Brunton Farm. We hope that we’ve enhanced the reputation of all companies involved in the project, as well as strengthening relationships with residents in the West Brunton Farm area.

Labor & Programme We decided to request the help of the entire project team to deliver the project, which included Northumbrian Water staff, subcontractors employed on the project and our own Esh-Stantec staff. We aimed to complete the project over a two-day period to cause minimum disruption to the school.

Pond Redevelopment Works

 Results Driven - the whole project was delivered for zero cost, which was a huge achievement for all involved. We planned the project so that works were completed within a two-day period, causing minimum disruption to the school.

Firstly, we cleared the overgrown vegetation and relocated several frogs which were found in the pond. We extended and improved the existing pond, installing a decorative edging, a timber perimeter fence, as well as building various hibernacula’s.

 Ethical - we hope that by collaborating with our supply chain, they’ve learnt about the Northumbrian Water ethos. We hope that they’ll embed a customer and community approach into their operations moving forward.

Outdoor Educational Area

 One Team - everyone involved contributed to the success of the project. We’ve demonstrated collaborative working with Brunton First School, our supply chain, as well as internally with EshStantec and Northumbrian Water.  Creative - the pond redevelopment was a unique project that required a lot of planning and organisation. An outdoor classroom to study ecology is a new and innovative approach to learning, that we’re proud to support. Going forward, we hope that our legacy project encourages more young children to consider a career in STEM related subjects.

The pond will be used by the school as an outdoor classroom, promoting the subjects of science, ecology and environment. A special ‘Eco Rangers’ group has been set up by the school to promote ecology and learn more about the subject.

Gavin Turnbull, Teacher at Brunton First School said: “The pond redevelopment has been fantastic for the school as it’s opened up so many opportunities for the children - they’ve been able to explore so many science-based activities. We’ve recently added tadpoles to the pond, which the children are very excited about.

We’re very grateful for the pond, as well as the time and effort that was put into the pond redevelopment. I think that we all worked very well together as a team and Esh-Stantec were very enthusiastic and supportive throughout the whole project.”

Killingworth and Longbenton Sustainable Surface Water Management Phases 1 and 2.

A partnership approach delivering a sustainable flooding solution with benefits to the wider community.

Introduction

S

ince 2010 the Risk Management Authorities (RMAs) for the Tyneside drainage catchment have developed and implemented an area-based prioritisation process to identify and investigate those drainage areas at greatest risk of performance failure.

The Killingworth, Longbenton and Forest Hall area was one of those areas identified, something supported by the published 2010 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment which identified Longbenton as having the highest risk of flooding.

The integrated nature of the drainage system means that it is not practical to assign responsibility for managing the flood risk to a single RMA. The RMAs therefore agreed to the joint delivery of an integrated drainage study to fully understand the issues, opportunities and benefits associated with a collaborative approach to risk management in the area. The study concluded that a collaborative approach could deliver significant benefits to both the residents and the environment, particularly in the area of flood risk reduction to 3,594 properties.

History of Flooding and Background The catchment contains over 20,000 properties. Based on a detailed Integrated Catchment Model (ICM) 3,594 properties are considered to be at risk of flooding, which is supported by historic evidence. Over 500 properties have

been formally recorded as being affected by flooding.

As flooding has historically been subject to under reporting, this is considered an underestimation of what has actually occurred. Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) has carried out previous works in the area to address property flooding associated with sewer incapacity. North Tyneside Council (NTC) schemes have included the creation of attenuation areas and bunds on fields in Forest Hall.

The developed areas of the catchment are a mixture of domestic housing, retail businesses, schools, industrial estates and business parks with associated infrastructure.

Northumbrian Water (NWG), The Environment Agency (EA) and the local authority North Tyneside Council (NTC) entered into a partnership agreement to work together to tackle flooding. This partnership and a collaborative approach allowed the organisations to share funding, jointly procure design and construction services and work together to find a solution that would benefit all partners.

By working in a partnership this allowed the sharing of wider knowledge which resulted in a greater understanding of the problem and the development of a solution that would provide greater benefits all round.

A sustainable approach to the flooding was agreed by all the partners as the way forward. A sustainable approach would provide the most suitable solution as well as

Technical providing great benefits to the whole community in the form of:  A more innovative solution rather than a solution based on conventional drainage systems.  Added value opportunities such as increased amenities in the area, enhanced biodiversity and ecology, as well as educational opportunities for the community.  Engagement opportunities with the community leading to greater support for the scheme and understanding of what the partners were trying to achieve.

The Solution The solution comprised of SuDS measures being delivered at multiple sites in a phased approach to manage surface water.

Phase 1 works were within Longbenton Community College, Benton Dene School and Benton Cemetery and involved the diversion of designated main river and the provision of storage.

Phase 2 works were upstream on Forest Hall Letch at Killingworth Moor and involved the provision of storage to facilitate receiving the diverted main river.

Phases 1 and 2: The first and second phase, funded by NWG, NTC, the EA’s Flood Defence Grant in Aid (FDGiA) and local levy, delivered surface water management measures designed with a level of service and betterment on a 1 in 100 year storm.

The SuDS components used included attenuation basins, a surface water pond and surface water separation.

Until April 2018, Longbenton Letch, a designated main river, flowed into the combined water system.

This scheme involved the removal of this watercourse from the combined sewer system by diverting it to Forest Hall Letch also a designated main river. This involved the construction under Phase 1 of the scheme, of a new 1200mm diameter precast concrete culvert to convey flows from the Letch via the modified existing inlet structure within Benton Cemetery to a new outfall structure at Forest Hall Letch within Longbenton Community College.

In order to receive the incoming watercourse, Phase 2 of the scheme involved construction of three attenuation basins with bunds upstream of the new outfall on Forest Hall Letch within Killingworth Moor, providing a total storage volume of 5000m3. Each attenuation basin has a flow control to regulate the pass forward flow, and a weir to maintain the top water level and protect nearby

properties, with an orifice through the weir to control the flows. In normal conditions the watercourse will flow as normal through the orifice within the precast concrete weir wall and the basins will remain dry. When flows increase during a storm event, the basins will start to fill to store the excess water within the bunded basin. By holding the flows back in the storage areas upstream of the new outfall within Longbenton Community College, this allows flows to enter from Longbenton Letch. The flows at the final basin are controlled to 0.412m3/s.

In addition to the three attenuation areas there is a further attenuation basin providing 6000m3 of storage capacity within Longbenton Community College constructed as part of the Phase 1 works. This attenuation has been provided near the confluence to slow down the flow in the watercourse. This attenuation area fills via a weir on Forest Hall Letch and a flow control has been provided to regulate the pass forward flow to 0.7m3/s in the form of a DN375 pipe within a bunded area at a crossing point over the letch.

At the time of the construction of Phase 1, Longbenton Community College were also in the process of constructing a new school building and as part of our community engagement we put forward the proposal of constructing

a pond and wetland area to receive surface water from the school roof instead of the planned underground storage tank. As such a new pond with wetland area and boardwalk was constructed for the school offering educational opportunities, increased amenity area and biodiversity at a reduced cost.

The attenuation basin within the school was constructed in the form of an amphitheatre at the request of the school so it could be used as an amenity area for games such as rounders. The basin will remain dry for the majority of the time so it can be used by the school and will only fill during storm conditions when the excess flow is stored until the storm recedes and the basin slowly empties at a controlled rate (approximately 14 hours to empty when full) through a ductile iron outlet pipe of DN200, back into the letch.

The basin has a natural appearance and is grassed to blend in with the school field with sloping stepped sides to provide the amphitheatre. The sides slope at a maximum gradient of 1 in 3 to allow the grass to be maintained and mowed and to allow easy access and egress from the basin.

Using SuDS over conventional drainage systems on the scheme reduces the carbon footprint as less concrete is used, less raw materials are used and the costs are also reduced.

Technical Design Approach The design was undertaken by Esh-Stantec as a joint venture and with an approach aimed at applying the latest best practice for surface water management schemes, which required a wider design team with a range of different skills. A landscape architect was used to develop a natural look for the basins and to develop a planting scheme for the wetland/pond area. An ecologist provided advice on planting and tree removal to facilitate the scheme. 3D visualisations were prepared by a specialist graphics team to use at community events.

The study used an integrated model which included a representation of the existing sewerage system, surface water drainage system, watercourses and runoff from fields and greenspace within the catchment. The model quantified flood risk at the catchment properties which was required to obtain FDGiA funding.

The model was verified against flow surveys undertaken across the sewer network with rain gauges and flow monitors being installed. A flood risk assessment was undertaken using the Stantec flood risk tool.

Civil 3D was used throughout the scheme to develop the solution and visualisations were created using the 3D model with a landscaping tool so they could be used for customer events which were held at various stages to involve the community in the scheme.

Construction Approach

Moor which commencing in April of the following year, 2017 with a construction period of 4 months.

The works consisted predominantly of earthworks which were constructed using 3D GPS with work undertaken by sub-contractor, Groundwork Services. The ground conditions comprised clay soils which eliminated the need of the basins to require lining. The bunds were constructed from clay soils excavated from the site. Civil 3D was used to calculate the cut and fill required and spoil from the excavations was reused to level the existing school playing fields and bunds which minimised the amount of spoil taken off site.

The planting, landscaping and reinstatements were undertaken by specialist sub-contractor Marley’s who are experienced in this area.

The works were located at multiple sites and involved working in a secondary and primary school, a community village green, Benton Cemetery and Killingworth Moor.

Due to the nature of their use the areas were very sensitive and the Contractor worked to minimise disruption and to keep the public informed.  The works in Benton Dene School and Longbenton Community College were programmed to start in the summer holidays to avoid disruption.  Early engagement with the school personnel was critical in achieving a good outcome. This allowed the schools to put forward their concerns and their preferences which could then be incorporated into the design.  A public meeting was held for the community to voice their concerns allowing them to be addressed early in the design process.

The design was undertaken by Esh-Stantec as a joint venture under an NEC Option C contract.

 Notices explaining the works were posted.

The construction was phased with the Phase 1 works within Longbenton Community College, Benton Dene School and Benton Cemetery being constructed first.

Construction commenced in summer 2016 to coincide with the school summer holidays, with a construction period of 7 months, followed by the Phase 2 works at Killingworth

Construction was completed within programme and budget.

SuDS Approach This scheme has maximised the opportunity to use soft engineering techniques with multiple benefits to reduce costs, saving ÂŁ4.2 million over a more traditional solution using underground storage tanks. The solution does not require mechanical or electrical systems and uses gravity therefore saving energy and reducing operational costs.

SuDS offer wider benefits than traditional techniques as they can also improve water quality, provide new habitats, enhance biodiversity, create community spaces and provide educational facilities and benefits.

At Longbenton Community College which was being developed as part of the Priority School Building

Programme, the flooding scheme was brought forward so it could be programmed to align with the school development. The SuDS approach resulted in a new amphitheatre for games, a new wetland pond and viewing platform to be used for educational purposes and upgraded playing fields.

At Longbenton Village Green where the new culvert was constructed, the green was reinstated with wetland scrapes being provided, raised and accessible planters, solar lighting, orchard and wildflower planting providing the local community with a much improved amenity.

At Killingworth Moor part of the area is proposed for housing development and the SuDs areas provided at this site will form part of a future amenity area for the community. Early engagement with the developer for this land has resulted in sharing proposals for future land use, in order to achieve the best outcome for the community.

Partnership Approach Funding from all the flood risk authorities including NWG, the EA and NTC has been brought together to cover the ÂŁ5.2 million cost of the project ensuring that a scheme that was unaffordable and undeliverable by any single party has been successfully implemented. This has ensured that public and private funding has been brought together to ensure best value for flood risk authorities and their customers. This approach is proving to be an economically viable model and ensures maximum value for the wider community.

The maintenance of the new assets has been carefully considered as part of the options appraisal and is shared between the Risk Management Authorities.

The CIRIA B£ST Tool, which estimates the impacts of SuDS, was used to calculate and monetise the environmental benefits of the scheme and demonstrated over £30 million of benefits to include amenity value, biodiversity and ecology, flooding, recreation and education, with the reduction in flood risk generating the majority of this value.

The scheme has been funded with resources from NWG’s asset management plan, the EA’s Grant in Aid funding and NTC’s Flood Resilience Programme. NWG’s AMP6 programme runs until March 2020 and has been aligned with the EA’s 5 year partnership programme.

The partnership delivered a more suitable and sustainable solution, providing a greater level of protection to properties, wider benefits to the community and a lower overall cost than could be achieved by any individual organisation.

Community Engagement Early customer and community engagement was crucial to the success of the project. A customer liaison team was engaged to manage customer concerns. The project team engaged very early on and held extensive consultations with the schools affected by the works, community groups, the local history group, landowners, English Nature and the Tyne Rivers Trust as well as the wider community.

This allowed for joint working and a scheme resulting in all round benefits for everyone.

The scheme was well supported by the local community and this continued throughout the construction phase which resulted in a smoother construction period and a positive response from the community.

Summary and Conclusion Following the completion of the works at Killingworth Moor the flows were turned at Benton Cemetery bringing the scheme into operation in March 2018. The scheme has performed well since and monitoring is ongoing. There have been significant environmental improvements following implementation of the scheme including less sewage spill into the main rivers via combined sewer overflows of up to 81,000m3 annually. By freeing up capacity in the sewage network the scheme has also enabled new development to go ahead resulting in economic growth and prosperity for the Killingworth and Longbenton area of North Tyneside.

By working in partnership, the team delivered a more suitable and sustainable solution with a greater level of flood protection to properties and wider benefits to the community than could be achieved as individual organisations.

Early community engagement proved successful in securing support for the scheme with wider benefits to be enjoyed by all. This project has also been successful at recent industry awards.

The next phase of this scheme started on site in the summer of 2018 and involves works at Killingworth Lake and the transfer of flows to West Moor Tributary.

GOLD WINNER: Customer Focused Award The Murton Flooding Scheme A detailed study of the sewer network was undertaken to establish the cause of flooding in the Murton area.

The solution was split into two phases of work entitled Woods Terrace & Stephen’s Road.

Working together as one team, Northumbrian Water, Esh-Stantec, Turner & Townsend & Wood tailored and changed their methods of working, as well as their project programme, to ensure minimum throughout the duration of the project.

Even though the programme was changed, the project was delivered within our target completion date.

SILVER WINNER: Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award - Live Emergency Rescue Demonstration Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, is currently working on a £1.7million project, known as Pipeline Management, to improve water quality in the Newcastle Area. As part of their approach to continuous Health and Safety improvements, the site-team based at Hollywood Avenue, Longbenton identified the opportunity to improve their emergency safety procedures. After liaising with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, both parties identified a mutually beneficial opportunity to improve their emergency rescue safety procedures. On the 21st February 2018, a live emergency rescue demonstration was undertaken by Gosforth and Hebburn Fire Stations who are based in the local area.

inked to Esh Added Value’s Building My Skills programme, Esh Group’s Mock Interview Day aims to provide young students with mock interviews, delivered by various well-known companies in the North East. 1000 students from 22 schools attended a pool of 45 companies who occupied 56 interview panels. Each panel took turns to interview students providing feedback and general advice to the participants. A whopping 900 interviews were carried out throughout the day, with some students being interviewed twice.

Stantec in the Community River Clean-Up for the Ouseburn Trust Date: 25th September 2018

Location: River Ouseburn, Newcastle

avid Shaw and a willing team of volunteers, donned their wellies and gardening gloves to help clean-up the River Ouseburn and cut back the overgrown vegetation. Two groups of volunteers helped heave 8 black bags full of rubble and scrap metal, along with the remains of a go-kart and a rubber car tyre, out of the riverbed.

They cut down and hoisted away a huge amount of weeds and purple buddleia from the riverbank wall; this can cause havoc to the structure of the wall and it’s paths.

The Clean-up took place in the Ouseburn Valley, which is a hub for the arts and creative industries. The Ouseburn Trust, who own the valley, seek to involve people in the heritage and regeneration of the area through its programme of free walks, talks and volunteering activities. The efforts of the team were very well appreciated by the Ouseburn Trust volunteers and should last for 2 years before another clean-up in that area is needed.

David Shaw, Graduate Civil Engineer said: “As part of ‘Stantec in the Community week’, an Esh-Stantec team cleaned up a section of the City Centre, Ouseburn River. A team of 15 of us headed down to the river armed with saws, hooks and loppers provided by the Ouseburn Trust. We pulled rubbish, metal and bricks out of the river channel and mud banks to improve the tidal river’s appearance and ecology.

We also set about clearing a long section of wall of Buddleia – protecting the river’s stone wall from damage and degradation in the future. I was amazed by how much we cleared in half a day and proud of the impact we left behind. The Ouseburn Trust were really impressed with the enthusiasm of the volunteers and want us back next year!”

he Run2 Academy is a working group of key people from each organisation within the Run2 Framework.

ALL businesses within the Run2 Academy are working towards a collaborative set of Community Targets.

To achieve the collaborative set of Community Targets, the Run2 Academy aims to develop unique and sustainable programs. Programs will focus on the following streams:

Shared Summer Placement Ross Markwell, Head of Business Development at Esh Construction said: “Esh-Stantec, working in partnership with Northumbrian Water, piloted the first Shared Summer Placement in 2015 with one Undergraduate Student.

The programme encouraged collaborative working, which enabled students to gain a broad understanding of the Water Industry. Now three years on, the Shared Summer Placement has developed and grown into the Run2 Academy.

Building on the model of the Shared Summer Placement, Northumbrian Water and Framework Partners are collaboratively working together to provide fantastic opportunities to young people in Northern England.

Current Issues in the Water Industry:  Skills Shortage  Aging Workforce  Lack of trained new entrants The (SSP) was created to:  Promote the Water Industry to undergraduate students who are currently working towards a degree in Engineering or the Built Environment sector  Provide students with a unique opportunity to gain an overview and understanding on how Capital Infrastructure projects are delivered from conception to completion  Allow students to contextualize their academic studies, as well as looking at the project from numerous different perspectives  Develop our workforce of the future by attracting talented undergraduate students into our businesses he (SSP) aims to offer numerous students, currently working towards a degree in Engineering or the Built Environment sector, the unique opportunity to undertake a 12-week summer placement with Northumbrian Water and their key suppliers. Students will gain an understanding on how each company’s values drives business performance.

Students will be paid the living wage and receive invaluable skills and experience working on real life Construction projects.

The (SSP) placements are tailored to each individual student’s needs.  Client - Northumbrian Water (4 Weeks) – students will spend four weeks working with Northumbrian Water to understand the role of the Asset Delivery Project Manager or Project Engineer. Students will be able to see how they manage and engage throughout the process, engaging their supply partners throughout.  Commercial Management or Design Element (4 Weeks) – students will learn how a scheme is taken from the investigation stage to defining the deliverable option, following the process to full design, as well as understanding software and modelling packages and how the design and construction team integrate to drive down costs.  Contractor – Construction Element (4-Weeks) – Taking the experience from the design element of the D&C contractor and utilising this on a water or wastewater construction site, as well as on-site construction experience and other departments associated with the build process.

Our promotional materials & stakeholder engagement resulted in 51 students applying for the SSP 2018.

Out of the 18 interviewed, we provided employment to 7 undergraduates.

WaterAid Fundraising!

World Water Day Bake Sale Date: 23rd March 2018

T

o celebrate World Water Day, we organised a collaborative Bake Sale at Spectrum 5, Seaham.

A host of homemade and shop-bought sweet treats were on sale with prizes awarded to the most popular and best-looking bakes.

Not only did we have a great time, but due to the generous donations made by our colleagues we managed to raise a total of £201.68 for WaterAid.

Heathy Eating Presentation

O

n the 26th September 2018, fitness expert David Fairlamb (www.davidfairlambfitness.co.uk) was invited to deliver a hard-hitting healthy eating talk at Spectrum 5, Seaham. The event was open to all Framework partners and focused on the benefits of a healthy diet, as well as the dangers of refined sugars.

Health Check MOT’s

F

or the third year running, Craig Stephenson delivered two days’ worth of Health Check MOT’s to all framework partners on 27th & 28th September 2018. Craig provided staff with measurements of their weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass, hydration levels, metabolic age and a visceral fat rating, as well as advice on a healthy eating and exercise. Eight weeks after the initial Health Check MOT’s, a second round of appointments were offered up in December to review and changes or improvements. Overall, 28 people took part in the first round of health checks with a whopping 62 taking part in December’s follow-up. We’re hoping that the health check MOT’s will now be carried out on a quarterly basis to encourage staff, as well as helping people to monitor their progress.

E

sh-Stantec, a joint venture between Durham-based Esh Construction and Stantec (previously MWH) was formed in 2015 to deliver Northumbrian Water’s Water and Wastewater Infrastructure design & build framework. The JV has delivered capital infrastructure projects for the north-east utility throughout AMP6 as part of a 5 year framework with a potential 5 year extension in to AMP7. Their work includes everything from short-term flood damage mitigation to large-scale capital projects designed to improve overall asset infrastructure.

Stantec acts as the designer in the JV with Esh Construction as the contractor with the focus on creating and maintaining a ‘one team’ culture. This approach has maximised the benefits of Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) in the design, allowing valuable input in relation to buildability and alternative construction techniques to be incorporated into designs. Principal designers also make regular site visits as part of the delivery process, meaning that there is increased two-way engagement between designers and delivery teams which feeds continuous learning and improvement within the JV and the wider supply chain.

Examples of their AMP6 work include a flood alleviation scheme in Whitley Bay involving innovative storage and the separation of stormwater and wastewater in the local sewer network; an award-winning sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) scheme in the Fellgate Estate, Tyne and Wear, which provides a high level of flood protection and a host of community benefits; and an ongoing £6M scheme to manage surface water at Killingworth Lake.

The joint venture prides itself on being customer-focused, results driven, ethical and creative, working together as one team. Corporate CSR programmes - such as Esh Group’s Building My Skills, STEM Water Kit & Stantec in the Community - have been utilised by the JV’s delivery teams and embedded into core operations to strengthen relationships with the local community.

Bespoke legacy projects have helped to develop their

community focused ethos and as a result, they’ve worked with a wide range of key stakeholders including NEET Groups, Educational Establishments and the North East Fire Service, as well as social enterprises and community groups.

“Esh-Stantec has a long-term approach to leaving a positive legacy, which involves building strong relationships with our clients, as well as key stakeholders in the local community,” says Ben Clark, Design Programme Manager for Esh-Stantec.

Northumbrian Water’s £3BN spend plan for the 2020-25 period, which was submitted to Ofwat in September, has a strong emphasis on resilience schemes, which Esh-Stantec will be well placed to deliver.

The utility’s business plan identified that 16 per cent of people in its north east operating area would be at risk of flooding during a 1 in 50 year event; this is something Northumbrian has pledged to address through an investment of £392M in enhancement schemes for resilience in AMP7.

“We will continue to work together as one team with Northumbrian Water, embedding their core values into our operations throughout AMP6 and beyond,” says David Pratt, Framework Manager for EshStantec. “Together, we’ve created an environment of collaboration, continuous improvement and behaviour that should make us proud and excited about the years ahead.”
