Kuna Yala, un paraíso lleno de rutas por explorar. Aguas cristalinas que invitan al navegante a enamorarse profundamente de este lugar; arenas blancas en donde las huellas marcadas no interfieren con la belleza del paisaje. Las únicas huellas que quedan son aquellas las de los indígenas, que preservan su historia y cultura siendo los dueños y amos de este edén.

La comarca de Kuna Yala, también conocida como Archipiélago de San Blas, se encuentra en el noreste de la república (noreste del archipiélago de las Mulatas en el Océano Atlántico), y posee alrededor de 400 pequeñas islas de formación coralina.

Se puede accesar a este destino por medio de avión, carro o bote.

La forma más fácil y cómoda es por avión. Consiste en un vuelo que sale temprano de la ciudad, y en menos de 30 minutos se aterriza en el paraíso. Hay más opciones de destinos cuando se viaja en avión, ya que hay varias comunidades con sus respectivos aeropuertos.

Kuna Yala is a paradise filled with adventures waiting to be explored. Its crystalline waters invite you to navigate and fall in love with it, and its white sandy beaches. Not even footprints can interrupt the beautiful scenery, and the only enduring footprints are those of the natives, “Eden’s owners,” who protect and preserve its history and culture.

The Kuna Yala Reserve, also known as the San Blas Archipelago, is a group of about 400 small coral islands off the northeast coast of the Republic of Panama.

Although you can get there by car or boat the best option and most comfortable trip, is by plane, with Air Panama. Flights leave the city early and a half hour later they land in paradise. There are many small island air strips to choose from.

Para los que deseen sentir más adrenalina y disfrutan de verdes paisajes, viajar en carro puede ser la mejor opción. La carretera para llegar es bien accesible, aunque aún está en construcción y se recomiendo ir en un carro 4x4. El viaje puede tomar alrededor de tres horas. Se recomiendo viajar en carro durante la estación seca, evitando fuertes lluvias. En carro solo se tiene acceso a una comunidad, Cartí. Antes de llegar al puerto de la comunidad se debe atravesar un río, que de no tener un conductor atrevido el carro puede estar en peligro. No es fácil cruzar este río pero tampoco imposible, es una aventura, y por eso se recomiendo cruzarlo mientras no llueve para evitar las crecientes.

En cuanto al hospedaje, hay para todos los gustos. Desde cabañas bien acogedoras, hasta rústicas chozas en islas privadas. O para los más aventurados, acampar. En muchas islas se permite acampar siempre y cuando no dejen basura a sus alrededores y se pague la cuota por acampar en la isla.

Definitivamente Kuna Yala es un destino para todos los gustos. Los que buscan sólo relajarse y tomar sol y los quieren aventura y practicar deportes más extremos. Durante el día se pueden hacer varios recorridos a diferentes islas. Isla Perro es una gran atracción, ya que hay restos de un naufragio en aguas poco profundas que invitan a cualquier curioso a explorar. Visitar las comunidades indígenas, ver sus aldeas, comprar sus artesanías o tomar fotos también es otra opción de algo que hacer estando en Kuna Yala. En algunas comunidades hay museos que se pueden visitar, así como también pasear por senderos en tierra firme.

Los Kunas son gente amigable, trabajadora y con muchas ganas de mostrar sus hermosas tierras. De igual forma se deben respetar sus costumbres y cultura.

Those who want a rush of adrenaline and enjoy jungle venues might prefer traveling by car. A four wheel drive vehicle is highly recommended, because the highway is still under construction. The trip is a total adventure; it takes at least three hours, should be undertaken during dry season, and requires skillful driving as you must ford a river before arriving at the only community accessible by the highway, Carti.

There are accommodations for all tastes in Kuna Yala, from cozy cabanas, to rustic huts on private islands. Many islands allow camping with the agreement that you will clean up your garbage and pay the established fee.

Kuna Yala has something for everyone. It is a destination for those who are looking for relaxation and sun, as well as those who seek adventure and extreme sports. Day trips are available; a popular one is to Isla Perro where a shallow water shipwreck lays waiting to be explored. Other interesting options include visiting island villages, shopping for souvenirs, and taking photos. Some islands have small museums and offer guided tours of the coastal jungle.

The Kunas, themselves are friendly and hardworking. They are proud to share their land and their culture.

En la provincia de Bocas del Toro y en la Comarca Ngobe Bugle, bosques intactos forman una avenida verde y prístina – La Reserva de Biosfera de la Amistad- surcada por caudalosos ríos que permiten la multiplicación de una biodiversidad única; y su influencia vital llega hasta las islas del Caribe.

“Se trata de un gran área conectada entre sí que forma un corredor biológico altitudinal uniendo las áreas protegidas de La Amistad, Palo Seco y San San Pond Sak; igualmente, por el otro lado, baja desde la Cordillera de Talamanca por la Península Valiente hasta los humedales de Damani, conectándose eventualmente con los arrecifes de los archipiélagos bocatoreños y el área protegida de isla Bastimentos. Es importantísimo conservar esa conectividad”, advierte George Hanily, ambientalista.

“Diversos ecosistemas peligran en Bocas del Toro por la falta de ordenamiento y planificación”.

Desde la costa caribeña hasta las altura del volcán Barú, este corredor es la mayor reserva hídrica del país, e increíblemente biodiverso; de gran importancia regional y mundial; pero es también un paraíso en riesgo ante el avance incontenible de las urbanizaciones que responden al llamado de un sobredimensionado turismo residencial que amenaza con devastar el equilibrio de toda esa cadena ecológica.

El Parque Internacional La Amistad tiene la cobertura boscosa de tierras altas más grande de Centroamérica; el área protegida Palo Seco es una necesaria zona de amortiguamiento para ayudar a proteger La Amistad, los humedales de Damani y San San Pond Sak, que todavía albergan especies como el manatí y algunas especies de aves, que no se registran en otras áreas del mundo y que son de gran atractivo para el turismo naturalista.

La Reserva de Biosfera de la Amistad (The Friendship Biosphere Reserve). Furrowing between mighty rivers that encourage a unique and multiplying biodiversity, the path has a vital influence as far away as the islands of the Caribbean.

The protected areas of La Amistad, Palo Seco, and San San Pond Sak are linked together in the upper altitudes.

Descending from the Cordillera Talamanca through the Valiente Penninsula and into swampy Damani, there is an eventual connection with the reefs of the Bocas Del Toro Archipelago and the protected areas of Bastimientos.

Conservationist George Hanily warns that it is important to conserve this connection.

“In Bocas del Toro, diverse ecosystems are in danger due to the lack of order and planification.”

From the Carribbean coast rising up to Volcan Baru, this pathway is the greatest hydro reserve in the country, incredibly biodiverse, and vastly important to the region and the world. It is also a paradise at risk against the uncontainable urban projects responding to residential tourism; a threat that could decimate the equilibrium of this ecological chain.

El Parque Internacional La Amistad (International Friendship Park) is the largest wooded park in the Central American highlands; while Palo Seco is a necessary natural shock absorber for its protection. The humid areas of Damani and San San Pond Sak still harbor animals like the manatee and species of birds found no where else on Earth. These are also some of the things that attract tourists interested in nature.

En algunas áreas que hubo bosques van colapsando las tierras, desapareciendo especies importantes; y todo esto producto de estos urbanismos; y esto no tiene que ser así, puede ser mucho mejor si se planifica, si se ordena; de lo contrario, este lugar va a sufrir un colapso ambiental; aunque bien manejado, con un buen plan, podría servir a mejorar la economía del país, pero sólo si conservamos su maravillosa naturaleza”.

It could be better, if properly designed, and regulated. On the contrary, without a plan and regulation, nature will suffer a complete collapse in this area. However, with a good plan, the area could serve to improve the economy of the country, but that will happen only if the marvelous nature there is preserved.

Panamá es un país privilegiado al contar con dos mares llenos de tanta riqueza y diversidad natural. No obstante, estos recursos marinos se están viendo amenazados por la falta de conciencia ambiental al momento de desarrollar nuestras actividades. El desarrollo costero no planificado, la falta de un ordenamiento pesquero, la pesca ilegal, la contaminación marina debido a aguas servidas, basura, químicos y otros, son algunas de las actividades que inciden directamente en la salud y bienestar de nuestros recursos marinos. Por ello, nuestros mares, que son fuente de sustento y que nos ofrecen otros tantos beneficios, necesitan ser protegidos.

La creación de áreas marinas protegidas a nivel mundial es considerada como una herramienta importante para la protección de nuestros mares y la recuperación de los recursos marinos. Isis Pinto, Gerente de Ciencias y Comunidades de la Fundación MarViva, indica que las áreas marinas protegidas son espacios delimitados de tierra y mar, en las cuales se encuentran atributos biológicos y culturales importantes que requieren de una protección, y que han sido designadas por una disposición normativa con base en la legislación vigente.

En Panamá, actualmente hay 43 áreas marinas protegidas y zonas de manejo que han sido declaradas por autoridades como ANAM, ARAP y algunos municipios. En nuestro país las áreas marinas protegidas y las zonas de manejo no son totalmente restrictivas sino que permiten, de forma regulada, el desarrollo de algunas actividades como: pesca, actividades recreativas, investigación y educación ambiental.

Panama is a privileged land that lies between two oceans filled with rich and diverse natural resources. Nevertheless, this marine wealth is threatened by a lack of environmental consciousness. Poorly planned coastal developments, the absence of fishing ordinance and illegal fishing, and contamination of marine areas with sewage, trash, and chemicals are some of the activities that have a direct impact on the health and well-being of our marine resources.

Our seas, which are fountains of sustenance that offer us so much, must be protected.

The world trend to create protected marine areas is an important asset for the care of our seas and the recovery of marine life. Isis Pinto, manager of science and community for the foundation MarViva, points out that the protected marine areas, which include seas, land, and sky, are important both biologically and culturally, and they require designated legislation that provides them with protection.

Forty-three marine areas have actually been declared protected by the authorities of ANAM, ARAP, and some municipalities. Here, the areas are not totally restricted but regulated in a form that permits activities such as fishing, recreation, research and environmental education.

Most of the protected reserves and management areas in Panama are in coastal zones.

Very few are further out to sea because of difficult accessibility and the inadequate funding for marine research. Our goal is to expand our research and meet the needs of all the areas as we improve our methods for maintaining their health.

En Panamá, la mayoría de las áreas marinas protegidas y zonas de manejo están cerca de las zonas costeras, muy poco hacia mar afuera, por la falta de acceso y los altos costos para llevar a cabo las investigaciones marinas. No obstante, éste podría ser uno de los retos a futuro, ya que otra forma de mantener saludables las poblaciones marinas es identificando estas áreas y protegerlas.

En el Pacífico, existen estudios que demuestran la migración de las especies marinas a través de las corrientes marinas, desplazándose miles de kilómetros y pasando por varias de las áreas marinas protegidas. Por ello, se considera que las áreas marinas protegidas son “parches o sitios” donde las especies descansan de las presiones humanas y pueden desarrollar sus actividades sin sentirse amenazadas.

“Son muchos los beneficios que percibimos de las áreas marinas protegidas: la cobertura boscosa de manglares, los bosques, los pastos marinos y corales, exsitentes en muchas de las áreas protegidas, ayudan a combatir el calentamiento global.”

“Con las áreas marinas protegidas también se protegen especies endémicas (únicas de ese sitio), o especies importantes para la ciencia”, señala Pinto. “En el Parque Nacional Coiba se realizan estudios y han encontrado compuestos naturales de plantas, corales y esponjas marinas que pueden tener potenciales curas contra la malaria, el cáncer y el sida”.

In the Pacific, migration pattern studies suggest that animals travel thousands of kilometers that include passing through and resting in these protected reserves. It is believed that they go there to rest from the stress of human interference and gives them a chance to interact without feeling threatened.

Pinto also points out that … “marine parks also protect endemic species (species unique to the area) or other scientifically important species …” Compounds of plants, coral, and marine sponges that have potential cures for malaria, cancer, and AIDS have been found in the Coiba National Park,

“There are many benefits that can be achieved by protecting marine areas. The mangroves, forests, marine pastures, and coral reefs in these areas all help to combat global warming.”

Pinto adds that protection allows the fish beds to recuperate, and scientific studies have shown that, as a result, there has been an increase in fish, mollusk, and crustacean populations; therefore, providing fisherman with better resources.

Son muchos los beneficios que percibimos de las áreas marinas protegidas: la cobertura boscosa de manglares, los bosques, los pastos marinos y corales, exsitentes en muchas de las áreas protegidas, ayudan a combatir el calentamiento global.

Pinto añade que otro beneficio es que las áreas marinas protegidas permiten la recuperación de las pesquerías, lo cual ha sido demostrado mediante estudios científicos que determinan una clara recuperación de las especies de peces, moluscos y crustáceos (dentro y fuera del área protegida) contribuyendo a que los pescadores dispongan de más recursos.

Tome acción • No consuma productos que se obtengan de la pesca ilegal como caracoles, langostas muy pequeñas, o especies amenazadas como las tortugas.

• Mantenga su distancia y respete el espacio de las ballenas y delfines • Si bucea o practica el snorkeling, no se pare encime de los corales • Si navega, no vierta el agua residual ni la basura al mar.

• Recicle • Divulgue esta información con familiares y amigos para que empiecen a conocer la importancia del mar ahora y en el futuro.

Take action • Do not consume products obtained illegally, such as snails and small lobsters, or threatened species, such as sea turtles.

• Keep your distance, and respect the space of whales and dolphins.

• Do not stand on coral if scuba diving or snorkeling.

• Do not dispose of residual waters or trash in the sea.

• Share all of this information with friends and family, making them aware of the importance of the sea now, and in the future.

• Participate in initiatives to defend the protected areas.

• Denounce any illegal activities that threaten natural resources.

• Be informed! Learn as much as you can about the biodiversity of your country, and protect it.

• Programa de Ciencias y Comunidades: impulsa la incorporación de una base científica en la creación, diseño y manejo de las AMPs. Así como en la gestión de los recursos pesqueros y la educación de las comunidades. Además, identifica junto con las comunidades, alternativas económicas las cuales permitan reducir la presión sobre los recursos costero marinos, y mejoren la calidad de vida de los pobladores.

• Programa de Incidencia Política: promueve la generación de normativa ambiental o la reforma a la existente, así como su aplicación y cumplimiento.

• Programa de Comunicaciones: difunde entre la ciudadanía la importancia de las áreas marinas protegidas y las buenas prácticas de pesca para la conservación marina.

• Programa de Control y Vigilancia: cuenta con embarcaciones equipadas con tecnología de navegación moderna. Esto le permite dar apoyo en actividades de control y vigilancia en las áreas marinas protegidas (AMPs).

“Las áreas marinas protegidas también son potencial para el ecoturismo, ya que abre una oportunidad a las comunidades aledañas para que ofrezcan servicios de guías, hospedaje, transporte, alimentación, entre otros, y puedan percibir ingresos que permitan mejorar su calidad de vida”.

En la gestión de las áreas marinas protegidas es muy importante la participación de las comunidades, autoridades locales, gobierno y sociedad civil. Comparado a décadas atrás, en Panamá ha aumentado el nivel de conciencia ambiental y aún se requiere trabajar más en este aspecto. La participación ciudadana para denunciar actividades ilegales que se desarrollen dentro de las áreas protegidas también es de suma importancia.

La educación ambiental es clave en el mundo actual, porque necesitamos saber y estar conscientes del problema que ocurre cuando hay pesca descontrolada o cuando afectamos los ecosistemas marinos. “Hace 20 años los pescadores no tenían que ir tan lejos para pescar. Y como si fuera poco, al final del día la pesca no es abundante. Por eso hay que tratar de enfocar el problema en cómo les perjudica para que realmente entiendan la gravedad e importancia de esta situación”.

“Protected marine areas also have great potential for eco-tourism, as they offer opportunities to village communities. These include opportunities for careers as tour guides and in hospitality and transport, permitting them to increase their income and improve their quality of life.”

The participation of the communities, local authorities, government and civic society is important for the effort of caring for the protected marine reserves. Compared to decades past, Panama has raised its ecological consciousness, but there is still room for much improvement. It is essential that citizens denounce any illegal activity in the protected areas.

Ecological education is necessary so that people know and understand the problems that occur when they over fish or when the marine ecosystem is impacted. “Twenty years ago fishermen did not need to go far to fish, and suddenly one day, the fish were just not as abundant. For everyone to understand the gravity and importance of the situation, we must try to put the focus on the negative effects as related to people.”

Llamado el “Puente del Universo”, el Istmo de Panamá es por sí solo un puente. Hace unos 15 millones de años, seguidos de movimientos sísmicos y actividades volcánicas, emergieron islas del océano.

Hace unos tres millones y medio de años, las islas se agruparon mediante grandes cantidades de sedimento, que resultaron de la convergencia entre los océanos Pacífico y Atlántico construyendo un puente entre norte y sur América y separando los dos grandes océanos. Fue un evento que cambió radicalmente la geografía, la geología y el desarrollo económico del mundo. En este puente natural, animales y plantas hicieron grandes migraciones; animales que recorren libremente las Américas en un evento conocido como el “Gran Intercambio Americano”. Animales norteamericanos tales como osos, mapaches, perros, gatos, caballos y llamas se abrieron paso hacia el sur; mientras que las especies suramericanas entre otras: armadillos, erizos y zarigüeyas se dirigieron hacia el norte.

Este evento no solamente causó un impacto en la biodiversidad del istmo sino también en el hemisferio oeste. El impacto de la separación de los océanos fue igualmente significativo cambiando el curso de las aguas lo cual afectó los cambios climáticos del mundo.

Called the “Bridge of the Universe,” the Isthmus of Panama is itself a bridge. Around fifteen million years ago, following yet millions of years more of seismic and volcanic activity, islands rose out of the ocean. By three and a half million years ago, the islands were joined together by the large quantities of sediment that resulted from the Pacific and Atlantic convergence, bridging North and South America, and separating two great oceans. It was an event that radically changed the geological, geographic, and, ultimately, the economic development of the world.

On this natural bridge, animals and plants made great migrations with animals roaming freely between the Americas, an event known as the Great American Interchange. North American animals, such as bears, raccoons, dogs, cats, horses, and llamas, made their way south while South American species, among them armadillos, hedgehogs and possums, went north. This event impacted not only the biodiversity of the isthmus, but the entire western hemisphere as well. The impact of the separation of the oceans was equally significant; it changed water current patterns that eventually effected world climate changes.

The Isthmus of Panama was at the center of this exchange and its own biodiversity would evermore be one of the greatest in the world. Fast forwarding a few million years, international scientists now flock to Panama to study its biodiverse environment. The

Smithsonian Institute maintains a large research operation in Panama where the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) has a center on Barro Colorado Island in Gatun Lake, hosting scientists from all over the world to study and investigate the flora and fauna. Other STRI centers around the country study the history, geography, geology, and related sciences, of Panama. The Audubon Society conducts recording breaking bird counts year after year in this country bridge that abounds with plentiful and colorful wildlife.

In more recent Pre-Colombian times, 1,500 to 2,000 years ago, the bridge served as a meeting place and a trading center. All of the native tribes in Panama are descended from South American ancestors who wandered onto the isthmus. They came to meet and exchange ideas and products with others. Evidence of ancient civilization is found throughout the country. There is physical proof of visitors to those communities from as far away as Mexico, found by Richard Cook, an archeologist with the Smithsonian in Bocas Del Toro. There are also linguistic indications and petrogliphs that link the ancient civilizations to other northern and southern civilizations.

When the Spaniards came, they found the isthmus to be the perfect bridge, facilitating not only their conquests to the north and south, but also shortening the distance between the Pacific and Atlantic. Across this bridge passed a treasure so vast it changed the face of Europe in the 17th century and gave birth to an idea -- three and a half million years after the land rose out of the sea and linked the Americas, a great interest arose to again open a passage between them. In 1535, Carlos V of Spain ordered the first survey for a canal and over the next almost

400 years the idea became an obsession. When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, the Americas were again divided, for the first time in millions of years.

“The Land Divided the World United,” etched on the logo of the Panama Canal portrayed a new image for Panama, a water bridge. At this point in history, joining the oceans was the new priority but, at the same time, the canal left Panama’s two major cities isolated on one side, interrupting traffic flow on the route to the western provinces and Central America.

By the end of the 1920’s, work was about to be finished on a highway that would follow the old Spanish road from Panama City west to Chiriqui and the Costa Rican border.

Chiriqui and the central provinces, the bread basket of Panama, looked forward to a new, efficient access to the large cities of Panama and Colon in order to market their produce. The modern automobile and a highway would afford the farmer not only a more efficient transport service, but also greater flexibility than shipping by sea. In 1931, with the transportation problem becoming more critical, the United States inaugurated the service of two ferries, the President Washington and the President Amador.

Built by the Panama Canal Company, they offered service from the landing in La Boca to a landing directly across the canal. A decade later, they added a third ferry, the President Porras, to the fleet. These ferries served as the primary link between Central and South America until the building

Swing bridges were constructed during WWII at Miraflores and Gatun locks but, while increasing access to the city, they also held traffic hostage by the obvious need to yield to ships in transit.

The Panamanian government had long realized that a bridge was essential to the economic and political growth of their country. On the east bank of the canal were the major cities, the Canal Zone, and one of the densest jungles in the world, the Darien. Beyond the west bank of the canal were the farm producing provinces, all routes to the towns of the interior, and on to North America.

By 1923, Panama had declared the construction of a bridge a certain and undisputable priority. Finally, in 1955, the U. S. committed to reuniting the hemisphere in the Eisenhower-Remon Treaty. A construction contract in the amount of $20,000,000 was given to John F. Beasly and Company to build the majestic, 1,654 meter (5,425 ft) bridge which was inaugurated October 12, 1962, with great fanfare and on time, permanently reuniting North and South America for the first time in 49 years. Souring the celebration was a dispute between Panama and the United States regarding its name. The U.S. christened it the Thatcher Ferry Bridge in honor of Maurice Thatcher, a former governor of The Canal Zone and construction period hero responsible for the legislation that resulted in the ferry system across the canal. He was an elderly statesman invited to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony.

El Puente de Las Americas, or Bridge of the Americas, a symbol of reuniting the hemisphere was Panama’s name choice. Each party held firm and resolved over their choice and, as such, the bridge essentially had two names until the ratification of the Torrijos-Carter Treaty in 1979.

Within Panama, bridges have linked the isthmus since long before the Europeans arrived. The intense river systems that crisscross the isthmus would have made travel very difficult without the ingenious antecedents of the graceful native bridges seen today throughout provinces like the Darien and Chiriqui. Nor was the Bridge of the Americas the first major link built in Panama.

Early on, the Spaniards saw the need for structures to cross the turbulent rivers of the isthmus. Without them, their gold trails would have been impassable, especially during the rainy seasons.

And they built them to last. Today, El Puente Del Rey (The King’s Bridge), constructed in 1620, still stands intact at Panama La Vieja (Old Panama), a noble relic and a tribute to the engineers of the 17th century. The treasure that changed the course of Europe’s future, four centuries ago passed across this bridge on its journey to Spain.

Many bridges were built during the construction of the railroad and the Panama Canal. The damming of the Chagres River obliged the Panama Canal Commission to construct a bridge over the Chagres where it feeds into the canal at Gamboa. On the site of what was originally a French supply bridge, the Gamboa Bridge was begun in 1907 as a relocation link for the Panama Railroad. Much of the original roadbed of the Panama Railroad built in the 1850’s with 170 bridges and culverts was compromised by the damming of the Chagres and the subsequent flooding of Gatun Lake.

The flooding made it necessary to lay a new line over one of the largest railroad embankments of the time. This was accomplished by building trestles and using construction fill to reestablish the

During WWII, the American Army considered it necessary to establish auxiliary bases throughout Panama to insure the security of the Panama Canal. To improve access, the construction of roads and highways was necessary, to include the transisthmian highway between Colon and Panama, and the bridging of the mighty Chagres River. Some of the Bailey style bridges built by the U.S. Army engineers still serve remote communities. You can find bridges, in many sizes and variations; although they may no longer be recognizable as the style from that period.

They have been ingeniously patched, modified and mutated by creative and resourceful country people, and thus, have endured into the 21st century. The 21st century brought with it the need for an additional span across the canal. Between the time of the opening of the Bridge of the Americas in 1962, and the turnover of the Panama Canal, at the Millennium, traffic from the west had almost quadrupled. Daily averages had gone from just under 9,500 vehicles daily to almost 37,000. It was very apparent that a new bridge would be required to handle the vehicles that poured into and out of the Panama City area. Studies, bids and contracts resulted in a new structure 15km (9.5 miles) north of the Bridge of The Americas, just beyond the Pedro Miquel Locks.

The Louis Berger Group, Inc., in a joint venture with Ty Lin International working with German and Australian contractors, designed and

It was inaugurated by President Mireya Moscoso on the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal, August 15, 2004, although the accesses and roadways connecting it to Arraijan, and Avenida Ricardo J. Alfaro, in the city, would not be ready until 2005.

The Puente Centenario, with its modern profile of giant cabled sails, towers above the entrance to Cuelebra Cut, and diversifies the traffic patterns to relieve peak hour congestion. The expanse has a total span of 1,052 meters (3,451ft.) and ample navigational clearance for the largest of vessels to pass under. The total cost of the project was estimated at $120,000,000, but there are conflicting and unclear opinions on the exact amount of the final costs of construction.

The Isthmus of Panama has connected the Americas for millions of years … for thousands of years, the innate engineering skills of indigenous tribes have traversed the treacherous rivers with networks of simple well engineered bridges unifying people and communities … for hundreds of years, the bridges of Panama transported treasures never before imagined, treasures whose economic impact changed the world forever … and, for decades, the major oceans and the Americas have been reunited. Panama is, indeed, the Bridge of the Universe.

El Delfín Dolphin T H Hay pocos animales que asombren tanto como lo hace el delfín, lleno de destrezas, encanto, personalidad y habilidades sociales. La mayoría de nosotros conocemos el delfín nariz de botella (este es el delfín que danza por las aguas de Panamá). Si alguna vez ha sido entretenido por estas criaturas, nadando y saltando en grupo a través de las olas que salen de un bote navegando cerca del Archipiélago de Las Perlas, demostrando sus dramáticas a-crobacias, entonces estamos seguros que ha vivido una experiencia que jamás olvidará. De igual forma, observar cómo la cola del delfín rompe las brillantes aguas en la Bahía de los Delfines en Bocas del Toro lo dejará sin aliento, frente a una belleza natural y casi religiosa.

El delfín es un ser muy social y por lo general permanecen en grupos, creando lazos sociales fuertes entre ellos; incluso se reconocen después de largos periodos de separación. Cazan, se cuidan y pelean. Se preocupan por sus compañeros heridos dándoles apoyo tanto físico como moral, y muchas veces suelen sostener a un miembro del grupo en la superficie del agua para que pueda respirar.

We are most familiar with the Bottlenose … this is the Dolphin that dances across Panama’s waters. Anyone who has ever been entertained by a pod riding the bow wave of a boat near the Perlas Islands, showing off with their dramatic acrobatic leaps and flips, will tell you that it is an experience never to be forgotten. Likewise, observing the peaceful flip of a Dolphin’s tail breaking the glassy waters of Dolphin Bay in Bocas del Toro is so breathtakingly beautiful that it is almost “religious.”

Highly social, Dolphin travel in pods, form strong bonds, and recognize each other after even long periods of separation. They hunt, play, nurture, and fight together. They care for their ill or injured, giving moral or physical support, sometimes sustaining a pod member at the surface of the water so it can breathe.

The Bottlenose is sleek and streamlined, traveling at speeds up to 11 km per hour and, sometimes, up to 35 km per hour. It is gray to gray-green/gray-brown on the back, fading to its white underbelly. Its color is Nature’s clever camouflage as it blends with the dark depths when seen from above, and with the surface of the sea when seen from below. The Bottlenose’s name is attributed to elongated upper and lower jaws. Breathing through the blowhole at the top, its head is defined by a snoutlike projection, eyes at the side of a perpetually smiling mouth, and small, inconspicuous ears.

Los delfines se identifican con un silbido particular; la madre le silba a su cría por días después de dar a luz para que la reconozca y logre distinguirla entre otras.

En general, la comunicación de los delfines varía en frecuencia, es más baja para socializar y más alta para la ecolocación. Su complejo sistema de producir e interpretar sonidos resulta crucial para orientarse en el oscuro y extenso océano.

El asombroso delfín ha sido fuente de misterio, mitos y entretenimiento a través de la historia. Ha sido protagonista de programas de TV, algunas generaciones recuerdan amigablemente a Flipper, el heroico nariz de botella, estrella de una serie popular de los años sesenta. Aparece en presentaciones en parques acuáticos y es usado para rehabilitación de enfermos y discapacitados. Nadar con delfines es una atracción turística muy popular en muchos destinos.

Sound production, key to survival in the sea, consists of a variety of clicks and whistles at all depths, in varying volumes, wavelengths, and frequencies.

Dolphins identify themselves with a “signature” whistle; as such, a mother whistles to her calf for days after giving birth so it can learn to distinguish her from others.

In general, communication is on varying frequencies, lower for social communication and higher for echolocation, a complex system of producing and interpreting sounds, critical to directional information in the dark open sea.

The amazing Dolphin has been the source of great mystery, myths and entertainment throughout history. It has starred in TV shows … the older generation fondly remembers Flipper, the heroic Bottlenose “star” of a popular 60’s series; it appears in shows at sea life parks; it is used in rehabilitating the ill and handicapped; and swimming with the Dolphins is a popular tourist attraction in many places.

Other services include such things as the 150 year old tradition of working with fishermen in Laguna, Brazil. There, the Dolphin herd fish towards the beach; nets are cast when a Dolphin signals by rolling over.

Nuestras características oceanográficas producen extraordinarias condiciones para el submarinismo. Con costas en 2 mares, tenemos diversos tipos de ecosistemas submarinos.

Litoral caribeño, recibe abundantes lluvias en la estación lluviosa con moderados vientos del sur, superficie marina calmada y más sedimentación por erosión. En la estación seca hay menos precipitaciones, y fuertes vientos del norte que agitan la superficie marina.

La temperatura permanece cerca de 27°C. Los mejores periodos de buceo son entre temporadas. Los lugares comunes de buceo están entre Portobelo y San Blas, y en Bocas del Toro; tienen arrecifes coralinos en diversos estados de salud.

Litoral Pacífico, presenta condiciones diferentes. Las costas del Pacífico panameño son “inbuceables” por la gran cantidad de sedimentos de los ríos. Solo consideramos “buceables” las islas, rocas y arrecifes.

The oceanographic and geographic structure of Panama, with two coasts and a myriad of marine ecosystems, provides the country with extraordinary scuba diving conditions.

During the rainy season, the Caribbean coast receives abundant rain with moderate winds from the south; while the seas are calm, erosion causes considerable sediment in the water. During dry season, there is less precipitation and strong northerly winds stir the sea. Temperatures remain around 80 degrees throughout the year.

Between “seasons” one finds the best diving conditions, and diving locations are found along the coast at Portobelo, Kuna Yala (San Blas Islands), and in Bocas Del Toro. Coral reefs can be found in varying states of health.

The Pacific coast has very different conditions. The coastal areas are “undivable” due to the amount of sediment that flows into the ocean from the rivers. It is only possible to dive around islands, rocks, and reefs.

En el Golfo de Panamá, las condiciones son cíclicas. En nuestro “verano” soplan fuertes vientos de norte a sur, empujando las cálidas aguas superficiales del Golfo mar afuera, lo cual sube profundas aguas frías (15ºC) oceánicas. Este proceso se denomina afloramiento.

Dichas aguas suben una inmensa concentración de nutrientes, necesarios para el fitoplancton, la base de toda la red alimenticia; este evento resulta en una gran abundancia de peces, aguas turbias por la proliferación del plancton y la superficie marina agitada. Estas condiciones previenen el crecimiento y desarrollo de corales, característicos de estas latitudes. Nuestro Golfo tiene una gran población de islas ampliamente distribuidas. En el “invierno”, la abundancia de peces se mantiene, las aguas se calientan, se calman y se aclaran, resultando en mejores condiciones de buceo.

El Golfo de Montijo es diferente. Ocurre afloramiento reducido, las aguas no se enfrían tanto en el “verano”. El Parque Nacional Coiba tiene condiciones de buceo favorables, pero generalmente difíciles, lo que la hace apta principalmente para buzos experimentados. Las mejores condiciones de buceo en esta zona se presentan en el “verano”.

El Golfo de Chiriquí también recibe un reducido afloramiento.

El buceo puede ser espectacular en estas islas, pero de remoto y difícil acceso, con sus ecosistemas submarinos permaneciendo virtualmente inexplorados.

Weather conditions in the Gulf of Panama are cyclical. Strong northerly winds drive the warm surface waters out of the gulf.

This process forces the cold deep ocean waters, rich in the nutrients required by phytoplankton, the base of the gulf’s food web, to rise to the top. This process is called “upwelling.”

One effect of this process is a great abundance of fish and a source of Panama’s name, “a great abundance of fish.” Another result of this “upwelling;” is turbid waters caused by phytoplankton blooms; and choppy seas that inhibit the growth and development of coral reefs. The gulf has many good islands for diving and, for most of the rainy season, diving conditions improve; the waters are warm and clear and well populated with fish.

The gulf of Motijo is somewhat different; there is less “upwelling” and therefore the waters are less cool. Coiba National Park’s diving conditions are best in the dry season and range from moderate to difficult, better suited for experienced divers.

The Gulf of Chiriqui also has a reduced “upwelling and diving there can be spectacular at some of its remote and difficult to reach islands and reefs. Most of the marine environments in this area are virtually unexplored.

Enero se convierte en el mes del jazz en Panamá y más allá de la música que trae el Panama Jazz Festival, están las oportunidades para los jóvenes y músicos profesionales, la oferta académica musical del más alto nivel, el intercambio cultural, las emociones, el crecimiento y sobre todo la intensa experiencia que vive cada participante y público de este inmenso proyecto cultural.

En septiembre del 2003 vivimos el Primer Panama Jazz Festival. El futuro de este evento era casi utópico, aunque lo que abundaba eran las ganas y las esperanzas de ver un crecimiento musical en Panamá. Hoy parece increíble lo que se ha logrado en menos de una década: credibilidad, desarrollo cultural, un público con criterio, aporte al turismo, a la economía, compromiso estatal y empresarial por la cultura y un creciente interés internacional en Panamá como destino cultural.

Organización y Metas: Para muchos de los que participamos de esta visión, lo que mueve el engranaje del Panama Jazz Festival es el amor traducido en compromiso, metas y logros. El motor principal es sin duda alguna Danilo Pérez, un ser humano que irradia energía, que abre puertas con su carisma y corazones con su música.

Danilo se ha convertido en un ícono, con merecidos reconocimientos por su significativo aporte social, creativo, cultural y musical al mundo, toda su labor se integra en la Fundación Danilo Pérez. In January, Panama celebrates Jazz month with the “Panama Jazz Festival.” Beyond the music, the Panama Jazz Festival offers top notch opportunities for aspiring and professional musicians alike. These opportunities include academic training, cultural exchanges, and, above all, an intense cultural experience shared by the attendees and participants.

The first Panama Jazz Festival was held in September 2003. Although we had high hopes the future of this event was uncertain. Looking back, it is amazing how much has been accomplished in less than a decade -- credibility, cultural development, contribution to the economy and tourism, with public and private support, and a growing international interest in Panama as a cultural destination.

Organization and Goals: The engine behind the “Panama Jazz Festival” is the love translated into commitment, goals and achievements, and a cultural vision. Without doubt, the conductor of this engine is Danilo Perez, a man who irradiates energy; he opens doors with his charisma, and opens hearts with his music. Danilo has become an icon with well deserved commendations for his exceptional social, creative, cultural, and musical contributions to the world. All of this culminates in the Jazz Festival which is organized by Fundacion Danilo Perez. The foundation is also involved in a variety of programs which include scholarships, educational programs, concerts, and a diverse schedule of activities provided

El Berklee Global Jazz Institute: Hay aspectos que un músico debe conocer para ser un profesional integral, aspectos que van más allá de la técnica y las notas, como comprender su entorno, la industria de la música, sus responsabilidades como ser humano y profesional, entender el valor de su aporte al mundo y realizarlo. Berklee Global Jazz Institute va en esa dirección. Es un programa de jazz diseñado para promover la creatividad y la maestría musical, con Danilo Pérez como Director Artístico y renombrados maestros como John Patitucci y Joe Lovano.

The Berklee Global Jazz Institute … new to the “Panama Jazz Festival” in 2010. There are certain qualities a musician must acquire to become a complete professional, qualities that go beyond technicalities and musical notes … such as being aware of environment, the music industry, responsibility as a member of society, and understanding the value of their contribution to the world.

The Berklee Global Jazz Institute is a leader in this philosophy. It is a program designed to promote musical creativity and mastery.

La Navidad es una de las fiestas mundiales que, pese a celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús, prácticamente pasó a ser una fiesta de hermandad, solidaridad y felicidad.

Sin importar que Ud. rece en un culto diferente al cristiano, el espíritu de la Navidad lo envuelve, lo atrapa y lo hace sonreír; además, lo motiva a tener gestos amistosos.

Ya sea de clase media o alta, rico o pobre; si es negro o blanco, niño o adulto, la Navidad nos impulsa a querer regalar, y aunque se diga o digamos lo contrario, nos alegra que alguien se acuerde de nosotros y nos obsequie al menos una sencilla tarjeta deseándonos buenos y hermosos deseos. ¡Esa es una parte de la Navidad!

La Navidad no se puede concebir sin luces de diversos colores, sin guirnaldas, sin escarchas, sin “árboles de Navidad”. Lo más chistoso de nosotros los panameños, es que gozamos comprando árboles de pino, que decoramos con algodones que simulan nieve; se imaginan eso?… somos del trópico. Pero ni modo, no podemos decorar con huracanes o con lluvias torrenciales; decoramos con nieve, pintamos paisajes alusivos a las regiones polares y colocamos muchos pero muchos Santa Claus; y aunque no lo crean, a pesar de copiar el frío polar, las casas se llenan en Navidad de mucho calor humano, de mucha música y no podemos dejar de cantar, canturrear o tararear un villancico. ¡Esa es una parte de la Navidad!

Christmas is a world holiday that started as one thing, the celebration of the birth of Jesus, and has become a celebration of kinship, solidarity, and joy.

It does not matter whether you are Christian or pray in a culture other than Christian; the spirit of Christmas captures everyone, inspiring friendship and happy smiles.

Your level of society is unimportant … rich, poor, black, white, young or old, Christmas provokes us all with an urge to give presents and even if we deny it, or say otherwise, we are always touched when we are remembered with a gift or even a card filled with good wishes.

It is all part of our Christmas!

Christmas just cannot be imagined without fanciful colored lights, garlands, and glitter, or without the tree. A funny thing about we Panamanians is that we love buying our pine trees and decorating them with “snowy” cotton … imagine that … us, from the tropics. We never consider using a theme of storms and torrential rain. Instead, we decorate with snow, polar scenes, and Santa Claus everywhere. But, in spite of our copying the cold polar model of Christmas, our homes are filled with music and fraternal warmth; and we just cannot stop singing, or warbling, or even stuttering a carol.

And this is also part of our Christmas!

Christmas cannot be celebrated without “Nacimientos” (Nativities). These scenes decorate our homes, shops, neighborhoods,

comerciales, aeropuertos, oficinas públicas e iglesias o templos cristianos. Es la manera o forma como un pedazo de Israel se posa en nuestros hogares y en nuestros corazones. Son realmente hermosos: casitas, animales, estrellas que anuncian a Jesús, ángeles, pastores cargando animales o en una situación laboral, mujeres cargando tinajas o niños, más casas, caminos, oasis; pero lo más importante, el pesebre donde se colocará la imagen del “niño Dios”, y muy a la distancia, los tres reyes magos (caminando o en camellos, depende de la familia), que los harán llegar el día seis de enero con sus regalos al pesebre. Para el siete de enero, todo se desmontará y el nacimiento se guardará durante otro año más. ¡Esa es una parte de la Navidad!

Pero ¿Navidad sin comida? En verdad el panameño, al igual que cualquier latinoamericano, hace gala de lo mejor de su gastronomía. Sin embargo, lo común a todos es el arroz con guandú, bollos de maíz o de arroz (con sal, sin sal, con dulce, “preñao” o no), tamales, y según el presupuesto: gallina asada o guisada en salsa roja; jamón, pavo, ensaladas (de papa, de pollo, de coditos con tuna), bebidas, cervezas, vinos y todo tipo de “bebida fuerte” para los adultos y bebidas gaseosas para los niños… y no digo más porque cada región panameña le ofrecerá lo que localmente considera lo más tradicional.

Esto me recuerda que tengo que apurarme, ya que pronto empieza la Misa de Gallo y no quiero llegar tarde… Antes que se me olvide: Un abrazo grande, Feliz Navidad, y que el próximo año sea tan bueno como el mejor…

They are like a little piece of Israel descending upon our homes and into our hearts for the holidays. “Nacimientos” are really beautiful, with towns full of houses and animals. There are angels and stars announcing Jesus’ impending arrival, shepherds at watch, village life, roads, trails, oasis’ and, most importantly, the stable ready and filled with anticipation. Far in the distance, the “Three Kings” wait to make their journey. Whether walking or by camel they always arrive with their gifts by January 6th. Then the next day everything is packed away for next year.

And this is also part of our Christmas!

But … Christmas, without food? The truth is that Panamanians, like all Latin-Americans, love a gastronomical gala. Ever present is rice with guandu (pigeon peas), bollos (doughy rolled corn or rice cakes) that can be savoury or sweet, plain or filled and tamales. Then, dictated by the family budget, you might find roast or stewed chicken prepared in a red sauce or ham and or turkey.

There will also be potato, chicken and or macaroni salad, fruits and dessert. With beer wine and liquor for the adults and soda for the children everyone is assured a good time. Much more could be said as each region of Panama has its own special local traditional dishes.

I have to go. It’s time to hurry, I don’t want to be late to midnight mass or “La Misa de Gallo” (rooster mass), as it is known in Panama.

La navidad nos trae la oportunidad de reconciliarnos con la muy convulsionada vida que nos toca vivir en este Panamá de hoy, donde a veces las cosas no son tan sencillas. Inmersos como estamos en el día a día, llega el momento de hacer una pausa y reencontrarnos con lo que al final, verdaderamente importa: nuestros afectos, nuestros sueños, lo que realmente somos. Es tiempo de comenzar a pensar en los regalos y las celebraciones y por supuesto en la sabrosísima comida que prepararemos para disfrutar con nuestros seres queridos: el momento de los tamales, el pavo, el pernil, el dulce de frutas y el saril...pero nada representa mejor una celebración de fin de año que el Ron Ponche, que además de ser una deliciosa alternativa para brindar en estas fiestas, es toda una tradición en la que las familias compiten con recetas secretas que pasan de generación en generación deleitando nuestros paladares y engalanando nuestras fiestas. Aunque se cree que es una variante del famosísimo “Eggnog”, el nuestro, que ya traspasa fronteras, tiene personalidad propia, pues se consume frío o a temperatura ambiente.

Junto con mis mejores deseos de Paz, Armonía y Prosperidad, les ofrezco mi versión de esta espectacular bebida.

A Delicious Celebration…

Christmas gives us the opportunity to reconcile ourselves with the very busy lifestyle of today’s Panama. We have the chance to pause and ponder on the more important aspects of our lives, our concerns, our dreams, and who we really are. It is a time of celebration, gift giving and, of course, the delicious food we prepare to share with our loved ones. It is the season of tamales, turkeys, hams, fruitcake and saril, but nothing defines our celebration better than “Ron Ponche.” Besides being a delicious toast to the season, it is such a tradition that families compete with secret recipes passed down through generations to delight the palate and celebrate the holidays.

Although it is thought to be a variant of “eggnog”, our ponche, enjoyed cold or at room temperature, exceeds all expectations and has its own personality.

Along with my best wishes for peace, harmony and prosperity, I offer you my very own version of this spectacular drink.

Ponche Eggnog RON

Ingredientes: • 2 latas de leche evaporada • 1 lata de leche condensada • 1 medida de agua (usar la lata de leche condensada vacía) • ¼ taza de azúcar • ½ taza de maicena • 12 yemas de huevo • 1 ½ tazas de ron blanco • 1 cucharada de vainilla • ½ cucharadita de nuez moscada rallada

Ingredients: • 2 cans of evaporated milk • 1 can of sweetened condensed milk • 1 measure of water (use the condensed milk can) • ¼ cup sugar • ½ cup cornstarch • 12 egg yolks • 1 ½ cups light rum • 1 tablespoon vanilla • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • ½ cup water

Preparación: Mezclar las leches, el agua, el azúcar; revolver bien y poner la mezcla a fuego medio hasta que caliente sin hervir. Disolver la maicena en ½ taza de agua. Mezclar las yemas con ¼ taza de agua y tres cucharadas de la mezcla de leches para subir la temperatura. Agregar las yemas a la mezcla de las leches poquito a poco (a chorro muy fino), batiendo muy bien para que no formen grumos. Agregar la maicena disuelta en agua y poner a baño maría mezclando hasta que espese a su gusto. Cocine por 20 minutos sin dejar de revolver. Dejar enfriar a temperatura ambiente, agregar el ron, la vainilla y la nuez moscada. Mezclar bien y colar si es necesario.

Embotellar, tapando herméticamente y refrigerar. Se sirve en copas bien frío, aunque también se consume a temperatura ambiente.

Prodecure: Mix together the evaporated milk, condensed milk, the measure of water, and sugar in a saucepan. Cook on medium until hot but not boiling. Remove from heat. Dissolve the cornstarch in ¼ cup water. Set aside. Mix the yolks with ¼ cup water and 3 tablespoons of the milk mixture (this tempers the mixture). Add this in a very slow stream to the hot milk mixture, beating well to avoid curdling. Add the dissolved cornstarch and return to heat. Place the pan in a larger pan of boiling water and stir continually until it thickens (approx 20 minutes). Cool to room temperature. Add the rum, vanilla, and nutmeg. Strain if necessary. Bottle using sterilized bottles. Seal and refrigerate. Serve in chilled goblets or, if preferred, at room temperature. ENJOY!
