TENNIS TENNIS UPDATE Myke Loomis Landauer

Fall leagues began in October. Tarpon Cove has three fall teams playing. Please come out and support our teams during their home matches! Check the schedule below and come out to support our Tarpon Cove teams!

TENNIS TIP: If you’ve been playing tennis for a while, you’ve probably heard the phrase “no man’s land”. In doubles, I define it as the space 4 feet from the baseline until about 10 feet from the net. If are caught in no man’s land, hustle to safety either back at the baseline or up to net. No man’s land is dangerous because you’ll often be forced to field hard shots right off the ground or hit long volleys. Additionally, you give your opponent a lot more angles to hit with less pressure on him or her. In contrast, if you’re at the net, you shrink the court and apply instant pressure to the returner. And if you’re playing back at the baseline, you have time to react to almost any deep shot on your side of the court. I see a lot of players stuck in no man’s land when watching doubles at the club level. Sometimes it’s laziness, other times it’s not being aware of court position and occasionally, the player is afraid of coming to net and stays too far back. If you’re going to be successful at doubles, you must come to net. The next time you play doubles, look at the no man’s land area before playing and decide not to linger in it during the match. It’s one thing to get caught there for one shot, like when you serve and volley, but you need to move right on out of it once the shot is complete.

FOOD & BEVERAGE FEATURED RECIPE Marc Petralia

Caramel Apple Pie Cookies Ingredients 1 (14.1-ounce) package rolled refrigerated unbaked pie crusts (2 crusts) 1 cup purchased apple pie filling 1/4 cup caramel sauce 1 tablespoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon apple pie or ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon half and half Directions Gather all ingredients. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Let pie crusts stand according to package directions. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside. Transfer apple pie filling into a food processor. Lightly pulse apple pie filling in a food processor until in 1/4-inch chunks Roll one pie crust into a 14-inch circle on a lightly floured piece of parchment paper. Using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut 1/4-inch wide strips. Cover cut pie dough with parchment paper or plastic wrap and set aside. Roll remaining pie crust dough into a 13-inch circle on lightly floured piece of parchment paper. Spread caramel sauce over rolled pastry. Spoon apple pie filling over caramel sauce, spreading so that it is evenly distributed. Create a lattice top with dough strips by alternately placing strips on top of the filling. Using a 2 1/2-inch diameter cookie cutter, cut rounds from pastry. Transfer cookies to the prepared baking sheets. Stir together sugar and apple pie spice in a small bowl. Brush cookies with half and half and sprinkle cookies with sugar and spice mixture. Bake in the preheated oven until cookies are golden brown, about 12 minutes (working in batches). Cool on baking sheets on wire racks for 20 minutes. Remove cookies to a serving tray and serve warm.

WELLNESS

Finding balance this holiday season The holiday season is almost upon us. While this time of year is meant to be joyful, it can make many of us feel overwhelmed, which can lead to stress, anxiety, and physical and emotional exhaustion. From gift shopping to holiday get togethers to hosting out-of-town guests, our normal routines and daily habits may be disrupted over the next two months. Here are five tips to consider that can help bring some balance back in your life during the holidays: 1.Prioritize sleep and self-care. It’s important to listen to your body and get the rest you need during the holidays. Sleep is crucial to keeping your immune system strong. It allows your mind and body to recharge, helping you to maintain a healthy weight, and even regulate your mood. Set time aside to decompress and relax each day and make sure you are getting the recommended hours of sleep you need depending on your age. 2.Be present. When your mind is in overdrive, it can cause unnecessary stress. Stay in the moment by practicing mindfulness. Take deep breaths throughout the day. Instead of obsessing about your “to-do” list for tomorrow, give your full attention to the present and the people around you. Make sure you embrace your senses, too. For instance, savor each bite of your holiday meals by chewing slowly. 3.Limit alcohol. All those celebratory holiday cocktails can quickly add unexpected sugar and calories into your diet. Alcohol can also interfere with your sleep and impact your mood. Opt for a “mocktail” or flavored water instead. Feeling left out by not joining the toast? Try water with a splash of cranberry and a lime. No one will know it’s alcohol free. 4.Stay physically active. It can be tempting to skip the gym when you are pressed for time. Maintain your regular exercise schedule but opt for shorter workouts with a little more intensity. If you need some inspiration, put on some holiday music and get dancing in your living room or while making dinner. 5.Take advantage of fresh seasonal foods. There are plenty of fruits and vegetables that peak in fall, so be sure to add those to the holiday menu and to fill up half of your holiday plate with them. Some healthy and delicious choices are Brussels sprouts, pumpkin, winter squash, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, celery, nuts, apple, clementines, and figs. Fueling your body the right way will give you the energy you need to enjoy all that the holiday season has to offer. By following these simple tips, you can have a healthy and balanced holiday season without tipping the scales, feeling exhausted or overwhelmed, or missing out on important moments.
