A Message From The Pastor

Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You. I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your Name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:3-4 Dear Friends, Rev. John Stuart

At the same time as I am writing this, the work in the church sanctuary is just beginning. The carpet is being taken off the walls and the old heating units are being removed. Dry wall will be put up and the electricians will do the rewiring. By the end of the week, the whole place may look as though a bomb has hit it. Don’t panic! It’s only for a couple of weeks; by the end of the summer all of the renovations will be completed. It’s been a long haul with regard to the actual work throughout the church campus. Like most of you, I’ll be glad to see this immense three year project completed. This last phase will cost in the region of $120,000 but it will be money well spent and invested. We will have a transformed sanctuary and a wonderful worship center. We will then have to pay for all of this work over the next decade. We’ve managed to pay up front about two thirds of what we required for the whole three year project. Some of our church people are continuing to pay into the capital campaign, even though they have completed their initial campaign pledges. This is very generous and much appreciated. Other people are re-writing their wills, so that the church will be left substantial amounts for the Capital Campaign. They are thoughtfully leaving a certain percentage of their ultimate resources to the church. If we can get everyone in the church to do this, we will be able to hand over a fully renovated and financed church to the next generation. I know that Erin people, when asked to do this, are very generous and considerate, so that they will be willing to accommodate this special request. It is my fervent hope and prayer that we pay off our debt before I am due to retire in ten to twelve years. I will do my utmost to help us achieve that aim. With your thoughtfulness, gracious gifts, and unfettered bequests, we can make that happen so that the next generation of Erin people can be blessed and continue to glorify and praise God from this special place that is dear to all our hearts. If you would like to talk about bequests or leaving special gifts to the church, any member of our Stewardship team would be delighted to assist you. God bless us all.

~John

So much so, that I named my first born child Erin McKenzie.

CLASS OF 2014 ELDERS Last month, you got to know Farrah Linkous. This month we highlight the +inal incoming Elder, Karen Stump **. ________________________________________________ I was baptized as an infant at Ben Hill

Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. When I was 8 years old, we moved to Knoxville and I became a member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Halls. Being a member of a small church was such a blessing as a child. Everything we did was intergenerational and attending prayer group or church choir held no age boundaries. So, leadership and worship opportunities were instilled young, as children were allowed to be seen, heard, and involved from an early age. In high school, I worked two summers at our Presbyterian Camp John Knox. A friend from CJK and my Pastor and wife urged me to go to their alma mater, King College. I visited and fell in love with this small Presbyterian college. After graduating, I returned to Crossroads as Youth Director. While in Graduate School at U.T., Erin Presbyterian called me to serve as Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministries for 3 years. Who knew my future husband would be sitting on the interview team along with Robbie Levering, Pat Sexton, Lou L Tate, and several other former Erin Members? Not only did I fall in love with the man with a funny last name, I fell in love with Erin Presbyterian Church!

I spent 4 years working at another Presbyterian institution, Maryville College. Then, in 1996, I become Director of Children's and Youth Ministries at Graystone Presbyterian Church. In 2001, God blessed Keith and I with twin boys Keegan and Konnor. With three children under the age of three it seemed inevitable that full time motherhood was to be my destination. God would call us back to Erin Presbyterian in 2008, where we felt at home almost immediately. A lifelong Presbyterian tapestry has developed along my faith journey. Through all my life experiences, I have always been able to feel God's will deeply! "Be still, and know that I am God!", rings boldly in my being. By His Grace, my mustard seed continues to grow. I have no plans to "hide it under a bushel. NO! I'm gonna let it shine!"

Annual PW Birthday Offering Picnic Sunday, June 10th at 5 pm at The Cove Park

This event will close out our year of Circle meetings. Everyone in the church is invited! Meat, drinks, and dessert provided….please plan to bring a side dish. There is a playground for the kids and a lakeside beach to enjoy. The goal for the 2012 Birthday Offering is $900,000. This year’s grant recipients are: -

Circle of Friends: Celebrating Life, Inc. Living Water for Girls in Peachtree City, GA, equips women to provide rescue, safe refuge, and rehabilitation for young American girls who are victims of human sex trafficking and exploitation.

-

New Opportunities for Romanian Orphaned Children (NOROC) in Tulcea, Romania, is a program that shares God’s love and blessings with children who have been orphaned.

-

Synod of the Sun/Solar Under the Sun (SUTS) in Irving, Texas, trains lay people to lead teams in the installation of solar-powered energy systems in low-income communities. Half of the grant will go to these installations and the other half will match funds for the purchase of solar panels and related hardware for projects in Haiti where SUTS currently focuses its mission efforts. These volunteers will also be trained to retrofit the solar panels to the water purification systems being installed by Living Waters of the World.

Please join us in giving as we have been blessed AND also for a fun time at the annual picnic on June 10.

“For you have been a refuge to the poor, a refuge to the needy in their distress, a shelter from the rainstorm and a shade from the heat.” Isaiah 25:4

And, believing Jesus Christ to be living water for our bodies and our souls, we are called to help people of the world who need pure drinking water. During VBS, the children will learn more about this life changing ministry, and will collect spare change to donate to Living Waters for the World.

No Sunday School classes in June or July

Senior Adult Ministry There will be no meeting or activity in June. In July we will be going to Calhoun’s at the Fort Loudon Marina for their buffet lunch. Watch the church announcements for details.

Do you love to read? Once you finish a really good book do you wish you had someone to talk to about it and share the experience? Well, now you have that opportunity – Erin’s Summer Book Club! Here’s how it works: anyone who’s interested can read one or both of the books we’ve selected (see below). Then, we’ll meet one Sunday to discuss each book over coffee. It’s not a huge investment of time – you can read at the beach, on a plane, or sitting on your deck. And you’ll have the chance to talk with others about everyday life from a Christian perspective, and be inspired along the way. Because the worship service will begin at 10 a.m. on Sundays for the summer, our book club discussions will be immediately after church, at 11 a.m. Please join us if you enjoy reading and sharing ideas. Here are the books: Peace Like a River by Lief Enger was named one the of the year’s top five novels by Time magazine when it came out in 2002. Described as a rich mixture of adventure, tragedy, and healing, it draws from sources sacred and profane, from the Old Testament to the Old West, from the Gospels to police dramas. The story, narrated by eleven-year-old Reuben Land, an asthmatic boy who has reason to believe in miracles, shows how family, love, and faith can stand up to terrifying enemies and tragic fates. We’ll discuss Peace Like a River on Sunday, June 24 at 11 a.m. in the JavaScripture classroom in the new education wing. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, also the author of Seabiscuit, is a current best-seller about Louis Zamperini, who ran in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and was training for the 1940 Olympics in Tokyo, but instead ended up in Japan as a World War II prisoner of war when his plane was shot down over the Pacific. The detailed account of his perseverance in horrific situations is harsh at times but an inspiring testament to endurance. After the war he became a Christian at a Billy Graham crusade, and today at age 95 he still speaks occasionally about his amazing life. The discussion for Unbroken will be Sunday, July 29 at 11 a.m. in the JavaScripture classroom. Though it’s so exciting you won’t want to put It down, this is a long book (400 pages) so don’t wait too late to get started.

Throughout the summer, we’re going on to an early church service time of 10:00AM during June and July. This is mainly because there are no Sunday School classes taking place, which gives our volunteer teachers a much deserved respite. It also means that everyone will get out earlier so that we can all enjoy a summerful of Sundays. The pastor will continue to write 2-3 devotions per week which can be read online or sent to you by email. These devotions are based upon the follow up readings that are printed in the worship bulletin on Sundays. The scripture readings and devotions only take about five minutes to read and convenient way of keeping you connected to God and the church throughout the summer months. ------------------------You can find the pastor’s devotions online at his Heaven’s Highway website at: www.glenkirk.blogspot.com. Alternatively, you can sign up for these devotions to be emailed to you by sending an email to Michele at: admin@erinpresbyterian.org. Just put a request in the content of your email about wanting to subscribe to the devotions and Michele will set it up. You can also do this from our church website at www.erinpresbyterian.org. Have a terri+ic Summer!

Just as we take little notice that the sun came up today, we also conveniently forget our need to give to the God who enables us to give; who accepts our gifts. We get angry that we are reminded to give. Yet, if we weren't reminded, many of us would neglect this important aspect of our relationship with God. Money is one of the things about which we have the most fear. Therefore, it is also where we need to exercise great faith.
