LOCAL CONTEXT
The following is a planting plan for a proposed “natureway� along SE 6th Avenue between SE 2nd Street and University Ave SE in the Marcy Holmes Neighborhood of Minneapolis, MN. The natureway consists of a planted median on the eastern side of the road, installed and maintained by neighborhood volunteers. The natureway is part of a neighborhood effort to build a stronger connection from University Avenue to the Stone Arch Bridge and Saint Anthony Main, to make a connection to the Mississippi River and to educate the public on the ecological value and aesthetic beauty of native prairie plants.

MAINTENANCE GUIDELINES AND TIMELINE The natureway will need much love and care during its first 1-3 seasons. Once the plants have been established (and replaced as needed due to die-off ), required maintenance will decrease. Installation and maintenance of the natureway can be done completely through volunteer efforts if volunteers are thoroughly trained and their work is overseen by someone familiar with planting and maintaining these species. PLANTING:

Must be done by the end of May One Saturday event with 12-20 volunteers Volunteers must: • Completely remove unwanted plants from median • Plant plants in sections drawn out by landscape architect or neighborhood representative at the event • Plant each section according to the plans above, planting specific species in “bunches” of several plants as shown in the example to the right. • Space plants out from each other according to the spacing listed on this plan • Begin by planting the “bluestem river” then working outwards towards the edges of the median • Safely transplant chosen plants to new locations • Apply a layer of shredded mulch • Avoid disturbing tree roots and tree trunks (see diagram on right) • Water plants after planting
