PLAYBILL

In a recent acting exercise with all my students, I asked my young performers to create a natural wooded space with a stream from their imagination to help the audience see the |setting without having the real environment. In one instance, I said, let’s discuss how it would really feel to skip rocks, one of the activities we were trying to help our audience reference in creating the world from which scene was taking place. I stood next to the student and bent down to the floor with her mimicking the act of skipping rocks.
Within a fraction of a moment, I was transported back in my mind to the edge of a lake my family lived on growing up. I could vividly see my own hand as that of an eight-year-old girl now, and without effort, my dad was standing there too in my mind, right next to me. He was slowly turning a rock over in his hand and I was with him selecting as flat a stone as I could, measuring it by feel in my palm, rubbing it with my thumb to assess the smoothness of its texture. I could see him stand up with his choice, the afternoon sun dappling through the oak trees that rose above us on those wooded shores so long ago was casting bright splashes against his smiling face. He was laughing that big, hearty laugh he so easily shares with others as he bent slightly forward, drew his right arm back, elbow crooked at an easy angle, wrist and forefinger gently flexed. Then effortlessly, I witnessed him release the stone like a ritual, agitating the stillness of the pond as it bounced along, it’s reflection of our father-daughter bond rippling across the mile long stretch before us. I saw myself jumping with anticipation, that small girl, with big brown eyes, the world fresh and new, giggling as we counted together the number of skips he’d achieved. “Woah! Seven that time. Incredible!” I squealed before releasing mine skimming twice before plinking under the water’s surface. “That was great! Two this time. You’re getting it,” my dad had proclaimed. Then we stood there together, gazing out over the shimmering lake, all the while laughing together, continuing to investigate the shoreline’s collection of small rocks for the next ceremonious round of just being a dad with his daughter in the simple observance of being present while memory making.
It is fitting that our late curtain call Spring season closes on Father’s Day this year, since each of our shows explore familial bonds and how we are shaped and influenced by them, in both healthy and, at times, unhealthy ways. In Phantom of the Opera, Christine’s unresolved mourning over the loss of her father with whom she has developed a deeply connected bond makes her susceptible to the Phantom’s manipulations as he exploits her longing for paternal guidance. Both Triton in Little Mermaid JR and Marlin in Finding Nemo Kids grapple with the balance between protecting and letting go of their coming-of-age children as they wade into independence.
On that recent rehearsal day with my students, I was so overcome with that single wink in time from my own upbringing that all of Christine’s anguish and Ariel’s and Nemo’s parental rebellion struck me with a new perspective of this critical bond as I am now the parent of adult children. As parents, we cannot know what memories our children will save to their hard drives to cherish in a twinkle of nostalgic whimsey nor what moments may influence their choices unwittingly toward poor decision making. All we can do is be that dad on the edge of a lake, skipping rocks with our child as if it’s the most important occasion of all - because perhaps, one day, it may be just that memory that guides them when they need it most.
Thank you for joining us this season, celebrating with us the cherished love between a parent and their child, that unique bond we all share along humanity’s miraculous cycle of life. We wish you all a Happy Father’s Day and a summer of health, laughter, and lots of family fun time I hope will include some skipping of rocks!
“When my father didn’t have my hand, he had my back.”
