In January this year, Forbes reported that 70% of employers say that creative thinking is the most in demand skill when seeking new employees. According to a McKinsey study, 77% of senior company leaders recognize creativity as a vital driver for business growth, and CEOs across the globe consider creative thinking the most important leadership quality.
Furthermore, the National Institutes of Health provide data annually showing children who are exposed to creative learning opportunities demonstrate a greater ability to problem solve real world problems presented to them, increased motivation for academic learning overall, and develop a deeper sense of interconnectedness to a larger society enhancing complex behavioral traits like intuition, conscience, empathy and forward thinking.
Yet, interestingly, the first programs to be cut in the public education sector are arts related programs. And strikingly fewer jobs exist with fair and competitive wages which offer healthy components for creative outlets. I can personally attest to showing some cynicism toward following a career path in the arts when, despite my two daughters growing up here at Kidz Konnection and thriving from the experiences they had, I aggressively pushed both away from an arts degree in favor of science and knowledge-based careers.
Now, along with the usual fight to keep arts-based opportunities in our children’s day to day learning environment, we are faced with an onslaught of generative AI applications that threaten the very existence of creative careers once hailed as uniquely human jobs. But we all agree creativity builds identity. Creativity builds character. Creativity builds community. Why the paradox? It seems despite our genetic predisposition to be a creative species, and understanding that we are a happier, more prosperous society when creativity flourishes, we seem intent on killing it.
In thinking about this paradox, this season, we offer 3 different stories, from a classic whodunnit like the mystery game of CLUE, to everyone’s favorite Disney sisters, to the most celebrated murderesses of literature in Chicago. In Clue, we learn that everyone has secrets and motivations, and deception leads to chaos. Through hilarious farce, characters reveal the
complexities of human nature and how our actions are often driven by hidden agendas. Chicago shows a corrupt society that praises manipulation, and charisma outweighing truth and justice. It highlights the dangers of glorifying crime and media sensationalism, with fame and image ultimately overriding morality. It seems our own country rests at an inflection point that mirrors these same plot lines. Is it that we are so drawn to greed, valuing wealth and fame so much that we are willing to be reduced to the very machines we once put in place to make our lives easier? Are we prepared for a world where humans will become numb to the world around us in favor of generative AI taking the lead and replacing our most beautiful and dynamic parts of ourselves which make us uniquely human for their faster productivity?
In Disney’s Frozen, Elsa is terrified by a secret power she cannot control that allows her to freeze objects and people. In a moment of fear, after she inherits the throne, she flees inadvertently freezing the entire kingdom including her own sister. So distraught by her sister’s death, her grief becomes an act of true love, melting Anna and restoring the entire kingdom. We discover her magical powers are controlled by love. Sometimes it feels like there is no stopping the evils of the world. Fearful that corruption will win over good, we can’t stop our eventual fate. But when I look around, I see the hundreds of children beaming as they come and go through our humble little Academy doors. Each year more kids than the last. I see the families who hold our family together with a love so great it surely could not only melt frozen hearts it will melt corruption and restore our kingdom to its rightful place as the greatest of all earth’s most magical creations, capable of managing our vices while staying true to the best parts of our humanness, love, compassion and yes, visionary.
With warmest wishes for a most magical and joyous holiday season.
“Creativity is seeing what everyone else has seen, and thinking what no one else has thought.”
