ILIANA MORA and THE GEIGER GIBSON EMERGING LEADER AWARD Iliana Mora joined the Erie Family Health Center family in June 2002 as a Development Specialist and assisted in one of Erie’s initial community needs assessments. Since that time, Iliana’s successes include: providing oral health care and optometry services, expanding the behavioral health care program, completing the renovations at multiple Erie sites (read more about the renovations on page 3) and acquiring and revamping two school-based health sites. She is currently working on the opening of two more Erie school-based health centers (read more about these new sites on page 2). While it is true that Iliana’s vision, skills and talents have molded Erie into the groundbreaking and influential health care center it is today, the compassion and heart she puts into each project has been the secret ingredient that makes each undertaking so successful. It’s no surprise Iliana has been honored with the Geiger Gibson Emerging Leaders Award. This award highlights the accomplishments of a new generation of health center leaders. The key qualities of leadership highlighted by this award are commitment, motivation, professional achievement, and leadership qualities that together further the health center mission. “These young professionals exemplify the finest in community health center leadership,” said Jack Geiger, MD, MPH, Arthur C. Logan Professor Emeritus of Community Medicine, City University of New York and pioneer of the U.S. community health center movement. Iliana highlights Erie’s commitment to the community as the main source of inspiration for her. “There are two reasons I love Erie. I love the people I work with – everyone is extremely talented and committed to the work they do,” says Iliana. “I also love the communities Erie serves. I come to the office to work with amazing individuals and to find new and better ways to bring quality services to more people and more communities.”

SPRING 2011 / EVENTS @ ERIE

SALUD and THE CITY 2011 Erie Family Health Center presented Salud and the City on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at LaSalle Power Co, hosted by Erie’s Junior Board. Specialized cocktails, a silent auction (that included overnight stays in the Ritz Carlton in NYC, Cubs and Bulls tickets, and one of a kind artistic pieces), a raffle for a trip to Mexico and live entertainment from the band South of 80, made the night unforgettable.

Honoring the finalists: (top left) Dr. Lee Francis, Erie President and CEO; Alice Swider, Award Grantee; Brian Marsella , Chair, Erie Board of Directors; and finalists Claudia Jimenez, Sheila Fleming and Adelaeda Pagan

The most meaningful moment for the 250+ guests in attendance was when Luis Leon, the Chair of the Junior Board, directed everyone’s attention to the video screen. A brief and impactful video was presented highlighting Erie patients and the critical role Erie plays in their lives. Their proclamations of ‘I Am Erie’ reiterated the powerful influence Erie has made in the lives of its community through its combination of innovation, quality and compassionate care. Erie would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped make Salud and the City such a huge success. Erie’s Junior Board members, vendors, sponsors, guests, entertainers, volunteers and staff you all contributed to this event. Over $40,000 was raised to directly support Erie programs and services and helps Erie Family Health Center fulfill its mission to provide accessible, affordable and high quality health care for those in need.

Every year one Erie Family Health Center employee is recognized for their hard work, dedication, compassion and overall exceptional display of Erie values. This employee is the recipient of the annual Adam R. Swider Employee of the Year Award. The award was established by Mrs. Alice Swider as a memorial to her late husband. Mr. Swider grew up in the West Town community and understood the tremendous barriers of families in need— especially regarding health care. For this reason, he was a strong supporter of Erie’s work to provide quality health care for all Chicagoans in need. Erie is sincerely grateful to Mrs. Swider for her generosity and giving Erie the opportunity to honor one of their employees in this way. Every year Erie staff members nominate coworkers to receive this award. After receiving over 35
