Time for a Year-end INVESTMENT REVIEW financial fitness With the holiday season upon us, you may well be busier than usual. However, by spending a few minutes reviewing your investment scenario of this past year, you can see where you’ve been, where you might be going, and what you need to do to keep moving forward toward your long-term financial goals. So, as you look back at 2016, pay close attention to these elements of your investment picture: • Performance – Reviewing your investment performance over time is important in helping you determine if you’re on track to achieve your financial goals. So, in evaluating how your investments did in 2016, ask yourself some key questions: How did your investments do relative to their performance in past years? If there was a big difference, what might have accounted for it? Were your returns www.edwardjones.com

You put your family first. Don’t you deserve a financial advisor who puts you first? At Edward Jones, your goals are our priority. relevant to your long-term goals? In other words, if you have already established a return rate you’ll need to reach your goals – and you should indeed set such a rate – were your actual returns “on track” to help you make progress toward your objectives? And, just as importantly, were your return expectations realistic, based on your investment mix and the market environment? • Investment mix – If you are a diligent investor following a welldesigned strategy, you probably started out in 2016 with an investment mix that reflects your risk tolerance, time horizon, and short- and long-term goals. But over time, your investment mix can change, even without your having done so on purpose. If you owned a certain percentage of an asset, such as growth stocks, and those stocks appreciated in price substantially, they could take up a larger percentage of your portfolio than you had intended, thereby exposing you to a higher risk level than that with which you are comfortable. So now that the year is coming to a close, examine your investment mix to see if it needs “rebalancing.” • Contribution levels – Are you taking full advantage of your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan? Specifically, if you got a raise this past year, did you boost your contributions to your plan? The more you invest now, and throughout your working life, the less likely it will be that you have to play “catch up” in the years immediately preceding your retirement. • Mistakes – We all make mistakes in every walk of life – including the way we invest. In looking back over 2016, can you spot some investment mistakes you might have made? Did you temporarily “bail out” on investing immediately after the “Brexit” vote, only to find, a few weeks later, that the markets had soared to record highs? Did you act on impulse and buy a so-called “hot” stock that turned out to be inappropriate for your needs and risk level? While mistakes like these might be costly in the short term, they can ultimately prove invaluable – if you learn from them.

Renowned doctors, expert nursing teams, and the latest technology to back them up, are just some of the reasons Swedish delivers “extraordinary care.” But there’s another side to being extraordinary that’s just as important. It’s a way of being treated that makes you feel like someone truly cares. Because, at Swedish, someone does.

We’re just about ready to turn the page on the 2016 calendar. So, as you review your investment decisions for the past year, try to determine what worked, what didn’t – and what you can do to improve your results in 2017. Athletics & Academia By Abbie Richert

By Mackenzie Williams

On December 26th, the Cascade Classic Girls Basketball Tournament kicks off its 16th year of friendly competition both on and off the court. Dubbed as “the most unique basketball tournament in the country,” the event not only showcases talented athletes but also ties in an academic competition called the “Brain Game” to promote the importance of academic achievement. Co-hosted by Eastlake High School and Skyline High School, teams from California, Alaska and Canada come to compete in a four-day tournament against some of Washington’s best teams, including both Eastlake and Skyline. Issaquah H.S. and nearby Eastside Catholic, Liberty H.S. and Redmond H.S. have all participated in past tournaments, to name a few.

The Cascade Classic is also unique in that although basketball takes center stage, the underlying values supersede the importance of athleticism and success on the court. Stayboldt’s vision is meant to “bring diverse and distant communities together; to help establish values and behavior that will last a lifetime; to model gracious behavior, sportsmanship and positive values; to build a lasting tradition, worthy of respect; and to provide an outstanding event for under-served girls.” On top of that, Stayboldt’s mission provides a platform to showcase and commend different styles of play, while also attracting college coaches and scholarship opportunities—both of which benefit girls who may not otherwise have an opportunity to be seen as a collegiate prospect. Guest mentors also play an active role in making the tournament special. Garfield H.S. basketball legend Joyce Walker, for example, participated in multiple tournaments over the years. Mentors such as Joyce enrich the experience of the athletes

— they inspire and motivate the girls in athletics and beyond.

The Cascade Classic is truly and unforgettable event, filled with healthy competition and positive outcomes for all athletes involved. Make sure to clear your schedule and check out what these girls can do. Good luck to everyone involved!

Since her breakout performance, Natalie has played across the country and as far as Japan. Under the instruction of her father, Natalie performed with groups such as the Northwest Symphony Orchestra at Benaroya Hall, the Louisville Orchestra as a featured soloist, the Boston Brass, and most recently for two nights alongside Josh Groban in August. Natalie was contacted to accompany the American singer-songwriter in the spring as the youngest member in the orchestra. Now seventeen, Natalie has also debuted on countless pieces such as Grammy winner Mateo Messina’s “Calling the Cavalry,” often in front of sold-out audiences of as many as thirty thousand. It doesn’t look like Natalie will slow down anytime soon, either. She has also recently picked up the violin with the help of her mother and has begun teaching young trumpeters across the Eastside much like both her parents.

Natalie is thankful for her brother and sister, parents, instructor Adam Rapa, and friends for their support throughout her musical career. For more information and future events, please visit nataliedungey.com

But Natalie is accustomed to breaking barriers. Ever since she first begged her father to teach her to play as a mere toddler, Natalie has assiduously pursued a successful musical career, often practicing for as many as five hours per day. It’s no wonder, considering where Natalie finds her inspiration — both of her parents are professional musicians, her mother a violinist and her father a trumpeter, and her brother, Clayton, has also been described as a prodigious tubist.

Mentor Joyce Walker with athletes

The tournament runs December 26 to 30 with games played at both Skyline and Eastlake H.S. The event kicks off with an opening ceremony followed by team introductions; later the Brain Game takes the stage and then, of course, the basketball tournament itself. The event ends with an awards ceremony to recognize the tournament winners and celebrate all players for their hard work and dedication to personal improvement. Tournament organizers include Loren Stayboldt, Swen Nater, Amy McOmber, Troy Winslow and Zack Wenman.

For Eastside Catholic High School senior Natalie Dungey, playing the trumpet comes naturally. Natalie began playing formally when she was just seven and attracted international attention at age 10 with her first-place rendition of the Arutunian Trumpet Concerto at the National Trumpet Competition.

Founded in 2000 by Sammamish resident Loren Stayboldt (also founder of the Sammi Awards), the Cascade Classic serves as “an opportunity to showcase our community, region, and state on an international stage.” For Stayboldt, his passions are rooted in creating a better, more inclusive community, and his ability to utilize resources and curate events makes him a dynamic force in community contributions such as this tournament.

I've now received 5 different areas of CoolSculpting done by his amazing and skilled esthetician Suzanne. It was pain free, relaxing, and SO effective. I'm by no means a big person and I wouldn't recommend this for weight loss, but if you're wanting to tone up the stubborn areas that you were never able to get rid of then I would definitely suggest this treatment!

athlete of the month

A point guard on the court and a catcher on the field

Ben Smith has committed to Bucknell University as a baseball recruit for the fall of 2017

As a kid, sports and academics were the bread and butter of Ben Smith’s everyday life. He could be found at the basketball court during recess in elementary school and in the classroom as a student of the gifted Merlin program. Today nothing has changed. As a varsity basketball captain and IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Candidate, Ben is the epitome of a well-balanced high school student. As a result, top-rated universities across the country have reached out to Ben in hopes of recruitment for their athletic programs. While there were long nights of contemplation over which college to attend, Ben is now more than excited to call Bucknell University his home for the next four years as a baseball recruit. When asked why he chose Bucknell, Ben exclaimed, “For me, Bucknell was the perfect combination of athletics and academics, which was one of the biggest factors during the decision-making process. The college town atmosphere is electric as well, so playing baseball for a school with great school spirit will be a dream come true.” Outside of the baseball diamond, Ben will focus his academic studies on biology and managing for sustainability. While Ben is eager to play as the catcher for Bucknell in the future, his mind is focused only on the matter at hand: the 2016 Skyline basketball season. After an unfortunate end to the season last year during the KingCo semifinal game, Ben is ready to lead his team to new heights. Ben attributes the abrupt end of last year’s season to injured players, a new coach, and a lack of senior representation. However, this year the Skyline Spartans are healthy, under the wing of experienced coaches, and led by their senior captain, Ben Smith. “It’s one of the greatest honors of my basketball career,” Ben stated when asked how it feels to be elected as the team’s captain. “I have a greater responsibility for my team and I must continue to represent the Spartans to the best of my ability. I’m finally a senior and at the top of my class, so I look forward to going out with a bang.” As far as preparation for the regular season, Ben has already begun perfecting his craft in the gym every day with teammates Kellan Przybylski and Ashish Manda. Though practices start in the middle of October, the first game of the season kicks off against Liberty High School near the end of November. With winter finally here, Ben Smith and the Skyline Spartans basketball team will put their preparation to the test, as they hope to make the long-awaited push to the playoffs and reach the glory of a state title.

With the basketball season underway, Ben looks to secure a spot in the KingCo Playoffs

The winter season has arrived, and for some, this means warm blankets and hot cocoa by the fireplace. However, for Ben Smith, a two-season all-star athlete, winter marks the start of a new grind. Fresh off a 4A baseball state championship, Ben seeks to do the same on the basketball court, practicing day in and out.

give big for the holidays

Support Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank By Abbie Richert

Yearlong, Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank provides essential needs for families including access to quality food as well clothing, toiletries, household items and more. For IFCB, the holiday season is an important time to not only raise adequate funding and supplies for the year but to also find ways to assist families through what could easily be a stressful season. Below are three programs critical to supporting IFCB’s mission. HOLIDAY GIFT BARN Holiday Gift Barn is an annual event coordinated by IFCB and hosted at Pickering Barn in Issaquah. The event serves over 1,200 children in the Issaquah School District each year. “We turn Pickering Barn into a huge toy store where parents can choose 3-4 gifts for each of their children, plus stocking stuffers. We also have a wrapping station and child care so the gifts can stay a surprise until Christmas morning.” This program helps establish a sense of normalcy in what could be a stressful time of year. Executive Director Cori Walters said, “We recognize that if we can take some of the burdens off of our clients' shoulders during transitional seasons, or holidays, it allows them to stay more focused and to have a greater ability to pay for their everyday things.” It’s also a strategic way to have a positive impact on other community members' lives. LUNCH FOR THE BREAK Lunch for the break provides kids with a pre-made box or reusable bag of food during every single weeklong break for school, helping to bridge the food gap during long school breaks. The program provides a free box of grocery items for each student in the family that can be used to make breakfast, lunch, and snacks. “For us, this helps us get more food in the hands of kids when they’re on a break and not receiving their free or reduced lunch,” Cori said. “Each break we are giving out 300-400 bags of food.” This program is a community effort — members come together to donate, fill bags/boxes and facilitate distribution from satellite branches.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN The annual campaign is Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank’s annual fundraising campaign, which lasts the entire month of December. “The annual campaign helps us meet our budget goals for the year,” said Cori. “A huge amount of our funds come in during December; all year long we are living in this budget, and we are hoping in December that we are able to make all the money we need to keep going.”

Donations are crucial to the livelihood of IFCB and can be made online at issaquahfoodbank.org/donate All of three programs require a community effort, something that is not lost on Cori. “We are so impressed and proud to be part of such a giving community,” she said. For Holiday Gift Barn and Lunch for the Break, “We are the conduit for this and really the work comes from the community.” IFCB appreciates support in any way possible. living with the wild life

Stphanie Kuwaski is a wildlife-loving Sammamish resident who always has her eyes out for our area's furry friends, not only for fun but for occupation. Stephanie is the owner/operator of Sanctuary Images, and as it happens, her backyard is full of action. During one of our beautiful autumn days, she was on her back deck enjoying some sun and coffee when she noticed a rustling in the tree at the end of the yard. What she found was awesome! This Sammamish bobcat blending in perfectly with the fall colors.

Today is just the best day ever! I was sitting on the deck enjoying the sunshine & reading my phone, when I saw something moving on our fence. And there they were... a Mama bobcat & her two kits, just walking on the fence without a care in the world!

Once I got all my critters in the house, I sat quietly on the deck waiting for these little cuties to come out of the tree. I could hear Mama's chirping, as did the kits! The smaller one came down first

My first reaction was "HOLY CRAP!" & then "I need to get the cats inside NOW!" As soon as I shoo’d Gracie (my cat) inside, Moki (my rambunctious dog) saw Mama & charged at the fence! The kits, who were walking behind her, stopped in their tracks & jumped into the nearest tree. Mama jumped off the fence & into the greenbelt on the other side.

The smaller one came down first (see 1st video) & headed into the greenbelt. The bigger one wasn't too sure it was safe. I spent a few minutes just watching him/her, taking video of this incredibly elusive animal while I could (2nd & 3rd videos.) Then I went inside to

give him/her some space & watched as he/she slowly climbed down. At some point, the smaller kit had came back for its sibling, waiting in the yard of the tree. I went back outside when I saw he/she was safely out of the tree, then watched them crawl under the fence & head into the greenbelt together, heading towards Mama's chirps, disappearing into the tall grass (4th video) just as suddenly as they appeared! Seriously... Best. Day. Ever. December 2016 • Plateau Living

Relax & Rejuvenate

Rigorous academics that challenge. Supportive community that nurtures. Christian leaders that transform.

With Yoga This Holiday Season Shopping lists. Long checkout lines. Holiday traffic. Don’t let the holiday hustle and bustle get the best of you; relax and rejuvenate with yoga this holiday season.

Unwind and set aside “me time” in your schedule to relax and keep your body happy. Do yourself a favor in the process: improve your energy and respiration; Increase your muscle strength; boost your blood flow; breathe in calmness and clarity as you relinquish the stressors of life.

The results speak for themselves. All those downward dogs and upward-facing dogs pay off in the long run by strengthening bones. Arm muscles are strengthened through these fundamentals of yoga practice. Yoga has even been found to reduce cortisol. Don’t cut out planks either. Concentrate on your core strength through this tummy-toning exercise. By lifting your own weight – a common practice in many yoga positions – osteoporosis can be kept at bay. Best of all, there’s a type of yoga for everyone. Practice a restorative practice, which is best for those who crave relaxation or don’t want to raise their heart rate – it’s gentle on the body.

We offer Invisalign, teen invisalign, clear brackets, self-ligating brackets and wild smiles

If you’re looking to burn calories, consider Ashtanga. This practice is fast-paced versus Hatha, a slow-paced yoga, which has been around for hundreds of years. Even pregnant women can be yogis, thanks to prenatal yoga, with the advice of their doctor. Looking for hot yoga? That’s a great option too. It’s nice for those who suffer from joint pain or just want to increase their flexibility in a warmer environment. Or, maybe you are looking for a different type of yoga practice this holiday season. Maybe give bat yoga a try. What’s that? Imagine hanging upside down, comforted by a hammock suspended from the ceiling, as you bend and twist into different postures. Is water more your thing? You might want to consider SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) yoga. Challenge your balance with this innovative workout as the water adds tranquility and serenity.
