4 Interesting Facts: Solar in Seattle

West Seattle 2015 8.68 KW System

MPL Readers: mention these facts when you call and get your first year’s cleaning & maintenance free!

Fact #1

Fact #2 Solar panels make a statement.

Ultraviolet Light (UV) that powers a solar panel is different than Visible Light. UV levels are nearly the same on a cloudy day as they are on a sunny one. Seattle is a great solar city because, on average, the days are longer here than they are down South. Expect higher kWh production during the summer with a dip during the peak of winter.

We believe that solar panels make a great visual statement about how the owners feel about energy efficiency, conservation and the reduction of carbon emissions. West Seattle Natural Energy specializes in gorgeous, integrated, custom installations that maximize efficiency by capturing the most possible UV light.

Rain or Shine -- Solar Panels Work Just Fine

Fact #3 Rain, sleet and snow will not damage solar panels.

West Seattle Natural Energy

Solar panels last longer in Seattle than they do in the desert. Climates with excessive heat and sun actually degrade the panels faster than cool climates. The life expectancy of a solar panel in Seattle is 50 years, as opposed to 30 years in Palm Springs or Phoenix.

A solar-equipped house that is surrounded by hills, trees and buildings will enjoy significantly less performance than one with an unobstructed south facing view. West Seattle Natural Energy has a variety of options -- including rotating panels and small wind energy systems -- that can help homeowners with challenging locations.

BELLA OF

Madison Park By: Paula GillEland

Author Leslie Stark, has been a Madison Park resident for 13 years. She was born and raised in Bellingham, then on to Pullman to study Social Sciences. She found Madison Park by chance while visiting a friend who lives here. Stark fell in love with the community and all around beauty of Madison Park. Currently she is employed with the University of Washington in their planning and management department. Her group works on a focused master plan for the future of UW. With a professional background in marketing, Leslie has always had interest in the written word but merely as a hobby. In 2004 Leslie found her beautiful Japanese Chin - Mini Poodle puppy she named Bella. Leslie describes Bella as “Sweet, intelligent and a playful attention grabber. Children were Bella’s biggest fans and were typically her largest audience.” That audience grew when Bella was featured in Seattle City Dog Magazine. Her size and playfulness contributed to her being spotted for puppy stardom. Bella was just “one of those kinds of dogs”, cute to the core. Sadly Bella passed away of K9 cancer in 2010. Two years ago Leslie made the decision to honor Bella in the form of a children’s book. She researched freelance illustrators online and found the perfect fit to help her create her new book. Bella of Madison Park is a charming, lovely book with bold letters and clear comprehensible sentences. Twenty Six

camp RAHH

THE SUMMER CAMP WE’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR By Abbie Richert

When you think back to your favorite childhood memories, summer camp is likely near the top. Between bonfires, late nights in the bunk house swapping ghost stories and revealing camp crushes (equally important) and gearing up to pass the swim test—a feat more daunting for some than others, it’s hard to argue that camp wasn’t the best. Camp also came with a slew of valuable lessons like how to live presently, make new friends and try new things; simple doings that people of all ages can benefit from. So, for those of us who have aged out of summer camp, never fear, the coveted experience is no longer reserved for kids. Enter: Camp RAHH, the Pacific Northwest’s first summer camp for adults.

overlooking Padilla Bay. The site is equipped with all the natural wonders—views, beaches, expansive grasslands and dense forest to explore, and a range of housing options such as huts, A-frames, tree houses, lodges and cabins.

Camp RAHH is “A space for adults to escape, play and explore like when we were kids,” says Mary Hazen, Operations Management Lead for Camp

RAHH and Madison Park resident of 4 years. In 2014, Camp RAHH Founder, Brian Oh, realized that his excessive use of technology and social media negatively impacted his well-being, and surely others felt the same. “Brian noticed that while he was successful, his relationships suffered, experiences had been interrupted and important moments of real life occasionally just passed by,” Hazen says. That’s when Brian gathered a small group of friends including Billy Thompson, Mayuri Reddy, Brian Chinn and Sam Stenson to create a distraction free space where authentic experiences and interactions with the community could be had. Hazen says, “Camp RAHH is the first all-inclusive adult summer camp event in the Pacific Northwest where adults 21+ spend a weekend without technology, drugs or alcohol. 2015 was the first ever inaugural Camp RAHH”; this year, camp was held June 16 – 19. The camp is located on a 47-acre site in Samish Island, WA,

In running a summer camp for adults, a bit of reevaluation is required: how can you make the experience relevant to the age group, comfortable and overall unforgettable? Hazen says it’s easy, “The experience is open to anyone 21+. Age, ethnicity, gender, social status and any other label you can put on simply don’t matter at Camp!” The activities offered are engaging and allow campers to leave with a new skill or two. They offer cupping class, cooking class, self-defense class, capture the flag, scavenger hunts, candle-making, meditation and yoga. And as far as the food goes, Hazen simply says, “In a word? Bomb.” Camp RAHH secured Seattle chef, Brian O’Connor, who last year whipped up paella, a whole roasted pig for taco night and a cobbler dessert. “Brian personally crafts gourmet, 4-course feasts throughout the weekend,” Hazen says. “The menu is focused on bringing together the finest, locally-sourced ingredients, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options available. We also have Taylor Shellfish oysters—my favorite from last year. I think I ate 12 in 10 minutes.” Being that Camp RAHH was founded with the intent to momentarily break from our digital lives, building community is the obvious backbone of the camp values. “We ask our campers to eat with everyone for lunch and dinner. We encourage our campers to break bread with someone new at each meal for new conversations.” Hazen goes on to say, “It is my strong personal belief that there is a huge need in society for a dedicated space that facilitates real human connection. How often are we so distraction free to be fully present for life’s experiences and moments that matter?” As simple as it may seem, meeting new people outside of your comfort zone can be transformative-an experience we could all use a dose of every now and then. “We expected Camp to be a really awesome getaway weekend experience. What we didn’t expect was to come back with an extremely connected community that felt like a family. I wasn’t looking for new relationships or friends, and now, my closest relationships are with the people I met from Camp. It is truly a unique bond you get from the experience at Camp.” For more information visit: CampRAHH.com July 2016 • Madison Park Living

meet your neighbor

Madison Park’s RESIDENT PROTON EXPERT,

Dr. George Laramore By: Joanna Smith

Three years ago Seattle became one of thirteen cities in the United States able to offer proton therapy treatment to cancer patients when the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Proton Therapy Center was opened. I had the opportunity to meet with the Madison Park resident chiefly responsible for bringing the center to Seattle, Dr. George Laramore, MD PhD, FACR, FASTRO. We met at the University of Washington Oncology Center in a nondescript conference room. He was of medium height, had grey-white hair and wore a grey suit, glasses and a warm smile. While the setting and Dr. Laramore’s appearance might not have seemed remarkable, it quickly became clear that Dr. Laramore is anything but usual. Born in 1943 in Ottawa Illinois and raised in Southern Indiana, he grew up in a world at war and experimenting with atom technology. He described his journey to settling in Seattle as “circuitous.” He received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Physics at the University of Illinois. After which, he worked at Sandia National Laboratory (SNL) in Albuquerque, NM. Sandia is a National Nuclear Security Administration laboratory. Its roots go back to World War II and the Manhattan Project when the Los Alamos Laboratory (LALN) wanted a separate site for the continuation of weapons development, especially it’s non-nuclear aspects. After WWII, LALN became one of the largest science and technology

14 Madison Park Living • July 2016

institutions in the world conducting multidisciplinary research in areas including space exploration, renewable energy, nanotechnology and medicine. It was at SNL that Dr. Laramore saw the potential of how physics, technology and nuclear science could be used in medicine. At the age of 30, he went back to medical school. He received his medical degree at the University of Miami and he completed his residency at the University of Washington in 1976. For his honeymoon in 1987, he took his new wife on a six month sabbatical to Saudi Arabia where he helped set up a neutron radiotherapy center to treat cancer. He listed this as one of two things for which he is most proud. He subsequently took two more sabbaticals. One was to study mathematical equations, and then the last in 2004 to travel the world to study proton technology. Dr. Laramore lists his second greatest achievement as helping bring the Proton Center to Seattle. Previously cancer patients had had to travel to Massachusetts for the treatment. Now the center serves the Pacific Northwest region and is nearing serving 1,000 patients.

As defined by the Proton Therapy center, “Proton therapy is a next-generation radiation treatment that precisely targets tumors and minimizes radiation to healthy tissue.” As Dr. Laramore explained, “the proton beam can be adjusted to specific depths, strengths and areas through 3D modeling so doctors can radiate the cancer cells without incurring collateral damage like traditional radiation beams that could penetrate cells behind or beside the targeted cells. As such, it’s particularly well suited for treating previously unreachable or not treatable tumors in the brain, eyes, various organs and is predominantly used in pediatric treatment.” His unique qualifications in physics and medicine, and his novel ways of looking at technology and what might be possible have led him to serve in many scientific advisory roles, write over 200 papers on topics including the efficacy of different types of radiotherapy, direct a number of national studies, be invited to speak all over the world (including Australia, South Korea, China, Japan, South Africa and the Czech Republic) and act as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Washington for sixteen years. He serves on the Board of Director of the Proton Collaborative Group and on the Scientific Advisory Board for the International Institute for Nano and Molecular Medicine. While his professional credentials alone are extraordinary, his singular focus and commitment to improving cancer treatment are

equally exceptional. Perhaps he has emulated the man he most admires, Richard Feynman. Dr. Laramore explained, “Feynman was an American theoretical physicist known for, well, many things. He had a great sense of humor and kept a constant course – he never allowed himself to get distracted.” Wikipedia lists many accomplishments, including Richard Feynman being awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1965 and his work at LALN. So what drives such a remarkable man? Perhaps Dr. Laramore’s answers to three final questions reflect the driving heart. Q: What do you want your legacy to be? A: My children. Q: Who inspires you? A: The patients. How they and their families respond to adversity. (His eyes teared up on that response.) Q. What lesson do you most want to impart on students and interns? A: Don’t get so caught up in the technology that you lose track of the patient. Listen to the patient. Dr. Laramore can be found on early morning neighborhood runs before working with doctors and patients at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Proton Therapy Center and at the University of Washington Medical Center. making a difference

Community Comes Together TO SUPPORT CHILDHOOD ADVENTURES

Chris McReynolds, Dan Lewis, Senator Cyrus Habib, Hillary Carey, Camper Andre, Camper Meggy, Connor Inslee By: Donna Lindsay

Over 300 community leaders came together on Thursday, March 17 in Bellevue and again Thursday, April 28 in Seattle for Camp Korey’s annual Prescription Laughter Luncheons. Camp Korey is the only SeriousFun Camp in the Pacific Northwest, hosting life changing programs throughout the year for children living with serious medical conditions. Since 2009, Prescription Laughter Luncheon (PLL) has raised over $1,000,000 for Camp Korey programs and this year raised an additional $289,117 at the Luncheon events thanks to the generosity of the community. The events were hosted by retired News Anchor and Sammamish resident Dan Lewis, a Camp Korey Board Member and featured additional key note speakers including Camper Meggy Charney, Senator Cyrus Habib (Bellevue Luncheon), camper parent Deana Harris (Seattle Luncheon) and Karissa Mobilia, sister to Korey Rose, the namesake of the camp (Seattle Luncheon). “I've been a friend and fan of Camp Korey for several years,” stated Dan Lewis. “When you see the magic that happens there, the smiles on the camper's faces and how it changes the lives of so many kids... how can you not fall in love with the place?" Lewis, a longtime supporter of Camp Korey and Plateau resident, hosted both Luncheons with 9 year old Camper Andre Mosely,

18 Madison Park Living • July 2016

who he first shared the stage with in 2015 at Grow. “It's an honor for me to be able to host Camp Korey events. I love to see how our community comes together to support this magical place. I've seen a million smiles on the faces of kids at Camp Korey and that warms my heart but I've also talked to several kids who say their time at camp has allowed them to forget their worries for a full week, build up their confidence and changed their lives. I love supporting an organization that is dedicated to doing that.” Both events featured Camper Meggy Charney, age 17, as she shared her message of hope. Meggy was diagnosed with Kearns Sayre Syndrome (KSS) in 2008 a type of mitochondrial disease affecting the energy producing cells in the body. KSS has led to additional medical complications for Meggy including type 1 Diabetes, hypothyroidism,

Caroline Corr, Malei Young, Katie McReynolds, Liz Suver, Theresa Evans, Liv Finne

heart block, scoliosis, ophthalmoplegia, and deafness. Through it all, Meggy, a tall girl with a bright smile who loves all things Harry Potter, has found strength, resilience and confidence in her time at Camp Korey. At first, like most families, they found it hard to believe that there was a camp that could fully handle and understand the complicated medical needs of their child. “At first, I was hesitant to come because the last camp I went to treated you like you were made of glass and incapable of doing things without a nurse watching you,” Meggy shared with the audience. “I’m not made of glass. I tried Camp Korey, and from the first day, I loved it. Camp Korey is a place where I can say ‘I can do this’ and they tell you to do your best and have fun.” “At camp kids are kids first and foremost, and their medical conditions take a back seat to all the adventures and fun they are going to have,” states CEO, Hillary Carey. “At Camp Korey our campers experience freedom – freedom from doctor’s appointments, from hospital stays, from worry or judgment--the freedom to just be a kid. We give them the chance to laugh until their bellies ache,

dance until they are dizzy and meet a friend who wholeheartedly understands them. We are excited for our 2016 summer camp season, and to fill our camp with joy, adventure and resilience.” Prescription Laughter Luncheon was generously sponsored through numerous corporate partners, including gold sponsors Don and Julie James and Elliot Bay Cabinets Co.; silver sponsors Clorox, Coca-Cola, Crider Foods, Essential Baking Company, Rexton, and Trident Seafoods; and bronze sponsors Bernafon, Holland America Line, Key Bank, Perkins Coie LLP and ReSound. Camp Korey invites community members interested in learning more to visit campkorey.org. About Camp Korey: Camp Korey empowers children and families living with serious medical conditions through yearround, life-changing programs - always free of charge. Located just outside Seattle at the historic Carnation Farm, Camp Korey offers a safe haven with full medical support where kids and families experience joy, adventure and resilience through a residential summer camp, family weekends, young adult programs and special events. Camp Korey’s outreach program, Camp to You, brings the magic of camp to children and families in hospital settings throughout the Northwest. Camp Korey is a member of SeriousFun Children’s Network, founded by Paul Newman. www.campkorey.org July 2016 • Madison Park Living

Elise Buie Family Law By Elise Buie-Russell

When Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, it forced the evacuation of my family and I initially to rural Georgia, then to Minnesota and finally to the Pacific Northwest. After not only undergoing my own divorce and multiple relocations due to Hurricane Katrina, but also truly understanding what it meant to put the ‘best interest of the kids’ ahead of my own, I decided to focus my practice on family law and serving as a Guardian ad Litem advocating for children's best interest in highconflict divorce and dependency matters.

My practice involves all aspects of family law: preparation of post nuptial and separation agreements, parenting plans, child support, simple and complex financial cases, relocation, and blended families. I am collaboratively trained and have had extensive mediation training as well as have a deep understanding of complex parenting issues, which clients may face when divorcing.

responsibilities is a resource not to be overlooked during your divorce. I pride myself on my ability to work through huge problems including major life transitions. For example, Hurricane Katrina did not stop me, but instead propelled me to my passion: families; there is no problem too big and no transition too messy. Additionally, knowing what it is like to be a stay at home mom thrust back into work in order to survive as well as what it is like to juggle a demanding career and a large family brings perspective and understanding to the cases.

Preserving civility and respect during the divorce process are top priorities as well as reducing conflict and its impact on parents and their children—by educating my clients on the impact of conflict on the children, they can make the best decisions possible for the future health of their children. And working closely with my clients ensures that they understand their options and rights, so they can make informed decisions about their future. Additionally, having a breadth of experience dealing with high-conflict families means every family law case is handled with the utmost care and expertise—my goal is to serve each client on an individual basis knowing that no two families are alike, so no two solutions are the same. The goal is to find real-life, workable solutions for the families, realizing that although a marriage might be over, a family still stands.

Peacemaking is not only one of my strengths, but is simply part of who I am—technically classified as an ENFJ who, according to Jessica Butts, author of Live Your Live from the Front Seat, this personality type can also be referred to as "The Giver." According to Butts, ENFJ's reach out to attach and interact with other living things, nurture relationships and connections, validate and value others, encourage, coach, educate and motivate, protect, help and take care of others while seeking harmony in personal relationships. This is why peacemaking seems not only natural to me, but makes the most sense for families when the end goal is psychologically sound children who can move fluidly between two different yet loving and financially stable homes.

Our family enjoys boating, traveling, dining at great local restaurants, Lakeside, Roosevelt, Seahawk and Husky football games (I also loudly cheer for the Saints and Geaux Tigers) and North Seattle lacrosse games. Delivering Classic Design

FOR

GO OD

By N2 Staff Writer, Amy Lynne Howlett By: Malia Nakamura

Shopping online in this day and age can often be a tedious, time-consuming task. E-commerce retail shoppers are barraged with innumerable options, each claiming to be superior to the next, oftentimes creating more trouble than the experience is worth. Entrepreneur and mother, Sarah McKinney set about to solve this issue with a timeless and elegant shirt design that her mother, Renee Basetti, designed in 1989. When the shirt was conceptualized, Basetti had one goal in mind: “to create the finest shirt for women ever made.” Today, McKinney hopes to make the beautiful design more accessible to women of all walks of life through her website, Sarah Alexandra. After working for her mother for 9 years and then starting a family, McKinney decided to set off on her own. “I wanted something that could be mine that I could focus on outside of my kids and my family. I really believe in this product and my mom’s design, and so ultimately I decided to start Sarah Alexandra.” McKinney began to search for ways that she could maintain the quality and timelessness of her mother’s design while making it more affordable and accessible. In order to do so, McKinney had to effectively scale a custom design which can often be extremely difficult. Instead of custom designing each individual shirt, McKinney outsources production to a mass-production facility. Despite the changes, the Sarah Alexandra brand still delivers a product that is superior to others in the market. Shirts start at just $295. McKinney explained the hole in the consumer industry that the Sarah Alexandra product fills. “Really what I think the biggest thing is that it’s really difficult for a woman to go out and buy a really nice shirt. For women it’s either something really inexpensive, such as Zara or H&M, or even at the middle price point, they’re more like blouses. A well-constructed, quality product is really missing in the marketplace.” The Sarah Alexandra shirt is a versatile product that can be dressed up or down and is wearable for

After months of hard work, your garden finally springs forth a bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables! Come harvest time, there is more than enough for your family, friends and neighbors; especially so with prolific crops like tomatoes and squash. Many gardeners freeze, dehydrate or can their extra produce to enjoy it throughout the year. Others use garden leftovers to enrich their compost pile. But what if you could use your garden for good?

www.sarahalexandra.com

With the plethora of grocery stores and the abundance of food at farmers markets and in our own gardens, it is hard to fathom that many Americans face hunger. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 17.4 million U.S. households were food insecure in 2014, meaning that at some point during the year they were unable to acquire enough food to feed their families. You can be part of the solution by using your garden to combat hunger and help those in need, as well as give back to your community!

This year as you enjoy the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables from your garden, remember those who are less fortunate and thank those making a difference in your community by using your garden for good!

The Garden Writers’ Association sponsors a national program called “Plant-A-Row” that encourages gardeners to plant an additional row of crops for the sole purpose of donating them to local food banks. Whether you sow additional seeds or just want to contribute your garden’s surplus, consider giving to a local soup kitchen or food pantry, where fresh produce is a welcome treat. Websites like AmpleHarvest.org allow gardeners to find food pantries in their area accepting donations.

women of nearly all ages. “That’s the beauty of the shirt, it transcends age, and just about anybody can wear it.” The business-owner and Seattle resident plans to hold a pop-up shop at the Bravern beginning in July. Currently, McKinney is working alongside an ad firm to assist in the promotion of the business, but the most effective sales growth strategy the business boasts is the indisputable quality and eminence the Sarah Alexandra shirt design delivers. As McKinney prepares to officially launch her website, the future of her business seems clear: to create a shirt for women that is leagues above the rest; one that will stand the test of time and trends.

In addition to feeding the hungry, you can use your garden to give back to the community. Thank your local fire department with a box of homegrown veggies! Firefighters take turns cooking for the crew in between calls and would be grateful for some free, fresh produce. You can also teach your children entrepreneurship by selling your extra produce at a fair or roadside stand as a fundraiser for their various clubs, scout troops or sports teams. Another idea is to make recipes featuring your garden’s harvest; turn your overabundance of tomatoes into zesty salsa or pasta sauce, or use your spare apples for applesauce or an apple pie! Everybody loves homemade jams and relishes or freshly baked zucchini bread. A surplus of basil makes delicious pesto, and any combination of herbs can be dried or used to make infused olive oils. All of these products can be donated or sold to benefit local schools and nonprofit organizations, such as churches and animal shelters, and they make great teacher gifts as well!
