COmpOST ChRISTmAS! your

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the average household’s waste increases by 25 percent. The greatest source of waste is the staggering quantities of uneaten or spoiled food from holiday meals and festivities. Rather than sending all that sustenance down the garbage disposal, why not compost it to enrich your garden this spring?

What is compost? The process of composting is the intentional decomposition of organic materials. Compost is created when microorganisms and microbes consume and excrete plant matter and other natural substances. An eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers, compost is packed with nutrients and is an excellent slow-releasing source of nourishment for your garden and flowerbeds. Compost also improves the soil’s texture to better regulate moisture and airflow.

your boat. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your boat is properly protected, warm and in good hands.

In true Santa style, here is the naughty/nice breakdown of what to include in your post-Christmas compost:

Need transportation to our facility? We’ve got you covered. Seattle Boat Company offers Valet Service for your boat. Prefer dockside winterization? We do that too. We also offer winter service and storage packages to meet your individual servicing needs and save you money. (Ask us for details!)

The Naughty List Carnivore delights and more: Meat, fish and animal-product wastes including bones, skin, gristle and fat. If you wish to compost seeds, finely grind them first, lest you start an unexpected garden in your compost bin! Also steer clear of dairy products, nuts, grease and oils. Holiday glitz: You cannot compost decorations, wrapping paper, gift bags, bows or cards with any plastic components or synthetic embellishments such as foil, paint, dye and glitter. Make your holidays brighter by repurposing leftover food and giving your garden the gift of organic, nutrient-rich compost!

The Nice List Food scraps: Fruits and vegetables and their rinds, cores and peels; grains and breads; eggshells; old spices; coffee grounds and tea bags; and even the disturbingly brick-like fruitcake your grandma brings every year! However, if you do compost leftover Christmas cookies and other sweets, do so sparingly, or run the risk of attracting pests looking for their own holiday feast! Paper products: Paper towels, napkins, non-glossy paper from holiday catalogs and the plethora of cardboard packaging from Christmas morning. Natural décor: Untreated evergreen wreaths and boughs, poinsettias, pumpkins, gourds and pinecones. And don’t forget your largest and most prominent decoration: the (live) Christmas tree! Large sections of a tree take too long to break down, and few of us have wood chippers on hand. Fortunately, many towns now hold Christmas tree recycling events where you can bring your tree and have it mechanically shredded for composting.

home of the month LEGENDARY LAURELHURST WATERFRONT ESTATE Known as one of Laurelhurst’s most notable waterfront estates, this landmark home is prominently sited on 175 feet of prime Lake Washington Waterfront on the coveted shores of Webster Point. This stunning masterpiece was originally designed by noted architect Arthur Loveless in 1928 for a prominent Seattle banking family who was in search of the perfect place to build a legendary homestead. Offering expansive views of Lake Washington and The Cascade Mountains, this signature property has been lovingly restored by the present owners while preserving the period architectural integrity of the original estate. Surrounded by a beautiful yet understated brick and wrought iron fence, a charming courtyard leads to the stately entry with an original arched front door. The pièce de résistance of this exquisite estate is the extraordinary waterfront that the property offers. Completely redesigned and reconfigured by the present owners in 2003, the low bank waterfront is defined by a new natural stone bulkhead that provides both beauty and structural integrity to water’s edge. A unique cove with sandy beach provides the perfect place for swimming. As dusk sets over the grounds, enjoy time around a fire-pit on the beach and the rising of the moon as and the twinkling lights of the eastside come into view. The dock, rebuilt by Waterfront Construction, offers two lifts, one presently used for a boat and one for a jet ski. The dock is built with such structural significance and integrity that it has easily accommodated a large yacht. A hand-carved central staircase leads to four upstairs bedrooms, including two spacious master suites discreetly positioned at each end of the home. Each suite offers sweeping lake views as well as private en suite baths. Two additional bedrooms offer beautiful vistas of the grounds and lake, one en suite with a charming authentic tiled bath. The fourth bedroom is used as an office by the present owners and features a wood-burning fireplace. A discreet staircase leads to an upper story attic space, perfect for storage. A fourth upstairs bath and newly remodeled laundry room complete the beautifully appointed upper level. The lower level is finished with the same quality and style as the rest of the home and features high ceilings and windows that overlook the beautiful grounds. A private retreat for guests is located on this level of the home and includes a complete eatin kitchen as well as a charming bedroom suite that opens to the gardens and lake. Once the site of many of Seattle’s most notable parties, the home’s spectacular ballroom is a welcome surprise. A gracious staircase leads to this historic yet versatile space ideal for parties and entertaining or as a game or media room. Soaring ceilings with box beams and period light fixtures, as well as a handsome brick fireplace, enhance the ambiance of this special room. The outdoor spaces of the estate are equally as spectacular as the home itself. In addition to the generous and elegant entry courtyard, more intimate patio vignettes can be found throughout the property. Swing open the leaded glass doors off of the living and dining rooms to the stylish view terrace, perfect for relaxing, dining or entertaining. The multiple hardscapes flow seamlessly to the beautifully manicured lawn and exquisite gardens. T

he DASSdance annual Santa Breakfast & Mini Nutcracker event takes place at Washington Hall on December 10th, 11th at 11 a.m. and December 17th, 18th at 9:30 a.m. & 12 p.m.; come hungry for a continental breakfast, meet Santa and enjoy DASSdance’s rendition of the Nutcracker.

DASSdance is a school dedicated to expanding “the physicality of dance in an innovative voice that serves a globally conscience community.” Daniel Wilkins, Founder and Producing Artistic Director of the Madison Valley-based school, combines athleticism, art, intrigue, glamour, and function to achieve his vision, and it’s clear that he’s getting through to his students. 10-year-old Salih Ujaama simply said, “You’re free,” in response to what he likes most about dancing. Nine-year-old Abiageal Etheridge agreed and added, “You can just do whatever you want, and I can just focus when I dance.” For these two, they’ve landed the roles of their (young) lifetimes as the lead dancers in the upcoming Mini Nutcracker. Watching them practice was as mesmerizing as it was inspiring — these kids are full of talent, commitment and strength, both mental and physical. It was amazing to see their part-

nership progress through the rehearsal as well as how naturally they supported one another and persevered through mistakes. Wilkins noted that partner dancing this young is rare and difficult but that these two are a fluid match.

fering classes of all levels and types. Today he also offers working opportunities for professional dancers in addition to his classes.

Wilkins also spoke to the importance of the event itself. “Anything in the arts is an uphill battle,” he said. “Things like the nutcracker help us tremendously. They basically support our mission and ability to have scholarship kids, which is a big part of what we do — we have a great scholarship group that the funding goes right to, really worthy scholarship recipients.”

Having not only a school but also a space to create innovate new art is a dream come true for Wilkins. He recently acquired a second studio space with the help of 4Culture and Diane von Furstenberg. “They gave us an equipment grant, which allowed us to do all the floors,” he said. “4Culture has been a really important part of this transition as well as Diane von Furstenburg — she would give us development grants for years and helped with this transition, so she’s been a real generous support of our art and what we do.”

Wilkins started DASSdance because he wanted to cultivate a community to support. “It’s really hard to get support long term for a dance company, but if you really want to become an institution, you need to become a school first, so that’s what I did.”

As an eight-year resident of Madison Park, Wilkins also appreciates the community. “This place is so beautiful; it’s just amazing. Madison Park has a reputation for supporting the arts, so that’s great for an art institution to have that support.”

For Wilkins, this happened organically, but it’s no doubt that his impressive resume aided in his endeavor. Wilkins attended the School of American Ballet in New York City on a full scholarship. He then went on to dance for Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Donald Byrd/The Group, Spectrum Dance Theater, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Suzanne Farrell Ballet; in 2000 he started his company, DASSdance (separate from the school), which “inaugurated Diane von Furstenberg—The Theater in 2000 and has performed five world premieres with original costumes by DVF.” When he decided to start a school, he began teaching his own kids. Then friends, siblings of friends, friends of friends and so on wanted to join. The school eventually took shape and he began of-

Between all of his supporters, Wilkins is able to make his passion a reality and can then share it with the community. “I hope that I make them better people first,” he said of his students. “It’s not that everyone will become a professional dancer, but I hope that they become great people in some regard; I am preparing the kids to become great at something.” Make sure to clear your schedule for the Santa Breakfast & Mini Nutcracker event. The skill and maturity of these young dancers will be sure to leave you in awe. For tickets, to make a donation, or more information, visit DASSdance.org December 2016 • Madison Park Living

Kevin Durant

BRINGS NEW COURT TO SEATTLE By Abbie Richert; Photos by The Players’ Tribune

Kevin Durant, former SuperSonics player, dreams of bringing a professional team back to Seattle and does his part to support underprivileged youth. In September, Durant returned to Seattle for the official reveal of a renovated sports court at Powell Barnett Park benefitting the Boys and Girls Club of Seattle. The renovation was made possible by the partnership between NIKE, Inc., Kevin Durant and the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation (KDCF) in an international campaign called “Build it and they will Ball,” a “Courts Renovation Initiative to increase the number of high-quality basketball courts accessible to underprivileged youth across the United States and internationally,” as stated by the KDFC.

Crowds of excited kids and families came out to take part in the unveiling of the gorgeous, new court on that cloudy September day. Even “BOOM,” the newest mascot to join Seattle Seahawks, made an appearance and partook in the fun. Sparkling Ice helped sponsor the event, and Durant signed jerseys as well as shared his vision for “Build it and they will Ball”; other local leaders spoke to the impact of his mission, specifically how the new court at Powell will benefit the community.

like the one I grew up in and give kids a chance to choose health, teamwork and basketball over some of the other negative influences they may face.”

“Build it and they will Ball” is closely linked to the goals of the Kevin Durant Charity Foundation, which aims to “enrich the lives of youth from low-income backgrounds through various educational and athletic programs.” For Durant, this mission strikes close to home. “When I was young, playing basketball was one of the things that kept me out of trouble and kept me focused on my growth and maturity into the man I would eventually become,” Durant said in an interview with KDCF. “For that reason, I’ve always wanted to play a leadership role in communities and neighborhoods

As for the future, Durant shows no signs of halting his goodwill. His pursuit to enhance the lives of underserved youth across the world has already made an immense impact and undoubtedly will continue to do so. And in terms of Seattle sports, Durant hasn’t lost hope of a pro basketball team returning, so keep your fingers crossed because the potential to “bring ‘em back” may not be out of the question just yet.

Eat, shop & be merry.

Durant’s philanthropic pursuits stretch across the USA, Asia and Europe; each new destination brings new reasons to continue his restoration work and empower youth.

O

n a blustery winter day, Madrona Arms is a welcome refuge. The bright, spacious bar exudes the comforts of home but with all the amenities necessary to have a memorable night — there’s a fireplace tucked in the corner where you can relax with a hot toddy in hand, snag a seat by a window for some easy people watching, or cop a spot at the bar and catch a game while chatting with an incredibly friendly crowd. Although it’s quite clearly a local hangout, transplants and floaters are more than welcome to partake in all the establishment has to offer.

“The Knox”

Happy Holidays to my neighbors in Madison Park!

For bartender Zach Maurer, working at Madrona Arms is “fun because it’s a small community, so you get to meet the same people as they come in again and again,” he said. “Plus as soon as that door opens you smell Molly Moon’s.” Not to mention Cupcake Royal is just up the street — an indulgent combo for anyone with a serious sweet tooth. Maurer has been at Madrona Arms just over eight months now; he’s a writer by day and enjoys the freedom to explore his personal endeavors during the sunlight hours as well as hold down the fort at the bar by night.

Drinks in Madrona By Abbie Richert

When it comes to drinks, Zach said, “Personally, I enjoy nice tequila by itself, sometimes with a nice beer.” If you need a recommendation or two, he’s your guy. He’ll also let you in on a few secrets if you ask. “I was in menu creation for years,” he said. “Off the top of my head, my bacon and egg Manhattan was pretty fun,” he added in response to the most interesting drink he’s ever made. “I’d make bacon sugar and put that on the rim of the Manhattan and get the egg whites in there as well. It was great.” For those “bacon is life” kinds of people, head to Zach and he’ll treat you right. For everyone else, I recommend the “The Knox” … although I can’t condone finishing it. The drink is a delicious, fruitforward cocktail topped off with a dab of sparkling rosé. “It’s light and refreshing and will do things to you that you didn’t know could happen. You’ll forget about your problems, forget that it’s winter,” Zack said. Another diner at the bar chipped in to add, “I like to call it ‘Rosé Colored Glasses’ because everything looks better when you drink it.” The drink was everything you could want out of a fruity cocktail — not too sweet, just enough citrus, and the bubbles keep it crisp. “The Knox” is a great choice if you are looking for a contrast to the gray skies. If sweet drinks aren’t your go-to, though, Zach is a wealth of knowledge and can recommend or craft a drink for any and all palates.

On December 26th, the Cascade Classic Girls Basketball Tournament kicks off its 16th year of friendly competition both on and off the court. Dubbed as “The most unique basketball tournament in the country,” the event not only showcases talented athletes but also ties in an academic competition called the “Brain Game” to promote the importance of academic achievement.

Ask us about the NEW SAT!

Co-hosted by Eastlake High School and Skyline High School, teams from California, Alaska and Canada come to compete in a four-day tournament against some of Washington’s best teams, including Garfield and Cleveland H.S.; nearby Holy Names H.S., Franklin H.S., Rainier Beach H.S. and West Seattle H.S. have all participated in past tournaments. Founded in 2000 by Loren Stayboldt, the Cascade Classic serves as “an opportunity to showcase our community, region, and state on an international stage.” For Stayboldt, his passions are rooted in creating a better, more inclusive community, and his ability to utilize resources and curate events makes him a dynamic force in community contributions such as this tournament.

The Cascade Classic is also unique in that although basketball takes center stage, the underlying values supersede the importance of athleticism and success on the court. Stayboldt’s vision is meant to “bring diverse and distant communities together; to help establish values and behavior that will last a lifetime; to model gracious behavior, sportsmanship and positive values; to build a lasting tradition, worthy of respect; and to provide an outstanding event for under-served girls.” On top of that, Stayboldt’s mission provides a platform to showcase and commend different styles of play while also attracting college coaches and scholarship opportunities, both of which benefit girls who may not otherwise have an opportunity to be seen as a collegiate prospect. Guest mentors also play an active role in making the tournament special. Garfield H.S. basketball legend Joyce Walker, for example, participated in multiple tournaments over the years. Mentors such as Joyce enrich the experience of the athletes — they inspire and motivate the girls in athletics and beyond.

The tournament runs December 26 to 30 with games played at both Skyline and Eastlake H.S. Trick-or-Treat IN MADISON PARK! On the evening of October 31, families clad in their best disguises took to the streets of E. Madison for a little trick-or-treating. Businesses along the way partook in the festivities as well, passing out candy to the kids under decorated doorways.

Characters of all sorts came out for the fun—all the big shots from Star Wars were present, Lady Macbeth, Zelda Fitzgerald and Willy Wonka made an appearance; adorable animals roamed the sidewalks, masked knights ran from door to door, an

entire family of dinosaurs made their way through the dense crowds, and the classic couple ‘bacon & egg’ were even spotted during the night. Halloween on Madison was all smiles; the costumes were impressive and everyone enjoyed the communal gathering brought on by the jovial (and sweet) holiday—hopefully the candy comas didn’t last too long!

Launch party!

Bryan and Margo at launch party

Catching up with the Madison Park Blogger, Bryan Tagas and wife Margo Bryan Tagas

If you’re a longtime resident of Madison Park, you probably know Bryan Tagas, or are at least familiar with his blog, the Madison Park Blogger. So, “whatever happened to that blogger guy?” Well, he and his wife made a successful transition into their new home in Santa Fe last October and now, less than a year from their arrival, have launched an N2 publication, Eldorado Living, in their new community of Eldorado, an unincorporated town of 6,200 people, located eight miles south of Santa Fe. There are 3,000 homes in our circulation area. Eldorado is only slightly larger than Madison Park in terms of population, but it has more ten times the land area (10.5 square miles here versus .9 square miles for Madison Park). They lived on a 1,030 square foot property in Madison Park and now live on a 1.8 acre spread out there in the high desert. They traded rain and clouds for the sun and dry air. They traded sea level for 7,000 ft. in the sky.

When they arrived in Eldorado they discovered that there had not been a print publication there for over eight years. The residents, widely spread across the landscape, were disconnected and unaware of much of what was happening in the community. It was clear that a blog would take many years to get established (if ever) because word of mouth is tough when houses are so far apart. They decided that they had the background and experience to make a hyperlocal publication work. And because of Madison Park Living, they knew that there was a model they could latch onto that would not require them to re-invent the wheel. Starting a magazine from scratch would have been beyond their capacity, but N2 provided the perfect vehicle for helping them tie the neighborhood together. They contacted N2, and the rest is history. Community reaction to their new pub has been very gratifying, and just as important, many sponsors have signed on to make this happen. Their first issue is 40 pages, all color, under 25% advertising. They are now connected to their new community in a way that never would have happened but for their launching the magazine. They are becoming part of the community there in the same way that they were in Madison Park. Bryan said “Living in Madison Park was a great experience. Margo and I were here for 13 years and had lived in Seattle all of their lives (60+ years each). We walked away from everything we had known in order to experience a totally new life before they pack it in. They expect to enjoy many good years there in the sun.” December 2016 • Madison Park Living
